HOT SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN at the Ipswich Art Gallery this April! Get ready for a jam-packed day of Easter school holiday fun at the Ipswich Art Gallery! These holidays, the Gallery is full of activities and exhibitions for families to enjoy.

Climbing Web by Evelyn Roth, open 10am-5pm daily, no bookings required.

Take your creative costume on the Climbing Web in the Children’s Gallery

First stop is the Children’s Gallery where artist Evelyn Roth has woven a giant web to fill the space. The Climbing Web is a large-scale multi coloured crocheted net suspended from the gallery ceiling. Complete with energetic music and spinning disco lights, it’s an exciting and safe environment where kids can climb, tumble, dive and spin while safely suspended off the ground. Next to the Climbing Web, craft tables await the imagination – design a crazy costume using colourful fabrics, string, paper, pipe cleaners, feathers and stockings to wear whilst scaling the zany heights of the Climbing Web. After tumbling and dancing through the web, head downstairs for hanging of a different kind. On weekdays throughout the school holidays from 10am to 1pm, the Main Hall will be filled with soil, moss and plants waiting to be combined into kokedama. ‘Create a Kokedama’ workshops teach children and adults the step-by-step process of making these traditional Japanese hanging plants. It’s messy, it’s creative and it’s a great way for children to learn more about plants. Plus, each Kokedama creation is yours to take home! For $3 you’ll get all materials needed to create a kokedama . No need to book, simply pay at the Gallery Shop on the day. School holiday fun starts on Tuesday 7 April, 10am to 1pm weekdays until 17 April. In keeping with the climbing theme, a rock climbing wall will tower over the outside forecourt ready for older kids to race to the top. Get a new perspective from the top of the world, but don’t look down!

Create your own Kokedama, 10am-1pm weekdays in the Easter holidays 7-17 April (limited to 200 participants a day).

When energy levels run low, head to the Foyer where a coffee cart will be stationed, providing a chill out zone for families to refuel. Especially popular with parents, the coffee cart will have a range of hot and cold beverages on hand plus delicious snacks. In addition to the range of children’s activities, the Gallery is also showing two contemporary exhibitions – Art & Australia Collection 2003-2013 and Microcosms: the work of Peter Madden. The Art & Australia Collection is touring from the Newcastle Art Gallery and is on in the Exhibition Gallery. The collection features a range of innovative contemporary works of art including video, painting, sculpture, light installation, sound art and photography. Kids can pick up an accompanying Art Trail map to guide their discovery and understanding of the various artworks on display. Last but not least, Microcosms: the work of Peter Madden is sure to captivate young and old alike, with intricate two – and three-dimensional paper sculptures, crafted from photographs found in magazines and encyclopaedias, brought together to create fantastical worlds. After being inspired by Madden’s work, children can create their own collage creations. At the Make a Mini Portrait tables, kids can let their creativity run wild, putting together their own portraits and images with photographs taken from old magazines. From climbing a giant web, to crafting a hanging plant, to being fully immersed in contemporary art -there’s something for everyone these school holidays at the Ipswich Art Gallery!

Paid Parking from April 13 in Ipswich City Square car park Public discussion about paid parking in the Ipswich City Square Car Park, to begin from Monday April 13, has been loud and sustained, with many people concerned that it will be detrimental to business activity within the CBD. Others say it will free up parking for shoppers, tourists and moviegoers. The first three hours in the ICS carpark will be free and there will be five hours free parking for movie patrons at BCC Ipswich Cinemas, which means a large number of visitors into the CBD will not have to pay for parking. In the wake of criticism of the changes, mostly from those who work in the CBD who need to park there throughout the day, Ipswich City Council has released a ‘Park Smart’ strategy for long stay parking in Ipswich City Centre, which highlights in one easy guide where parking is metered, charged or free. Council’s view is that parking restrictions are necessary to ensure that parking bays turnover regularly, so that people can conveniently access the services and facilities they need. This, in turn, is seen as supporting local businesses and the economic growth of the Ipswich City Centre.

The Council’s ‘Park Smart’ contends that if all car parks in the Ipswich CBD were free, the premium parking bays would be occupied all day by long stay parkers, especially commuters who work in Brisbane and catch the train. This practice would hurt local businesses as their customers would not be able to find a convenient place to park to access their goods and services. Free parking always comes at a cost to someone. Even when there is no cost to park, there are still costs to the facility owner relating to construction and upkeep. Fees generated from parking meters help fund the maintenance, construction and upgrade of parking facilities, as well as improvements to the pedestrian and cycle networks in the Ipswich City Centre. CBD workers who want to avoid charges are

encouraged to use public transport or use the earlybird option with discount all day parking before 7.30am. As the city grows, there will need to be a balance of providing: • the right amount of short stay parking (less than four hours) in the right locations to support local businesses; and • options for long stay parking (greater than four hours) including free parking on the fringe of the City Centre and higher priced parking in more convenient locations. For a complete list of parking options available, visit the website and download our Park Smart brochure. To download it visit

www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/parking. There are also posters and handouts available for CBD traders to give to customers which can be obtained from the Council Marketing Department. What do YOU think of the new parking strategy for Ipswich City Centre? Will it mean that short term visitors will no longer have to search for a park? Will you take advantage of the free parking? We would like to hear your views. Please email darren@strikepublications.com.au or visit the Ipswich Life Facebook page to leave your comments. New mural to deter vandalism A new mural at the old Pump Station in Springfield Lakes designed and painted by local artist Annie Clarke was unveiled recently. Ipswich City Council Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale praised the initiative. “Tackling crime and vandalism takes some creative thinking and this project is evidence of that,” Cr Pisasale said. “Murals such as this play a role in deterring vandalism in the area and increasing community enjoyment of local facilities. “Working in partnership with the Queensland Government’s Graffiti Stop program, council has invested over $4,500 in designing and painting this beautiful mural. “I’d especially like to thank artist Annie Clarke

for such an impressive effort.” Division 9 Councillor Sheila Ireland said the project was a really great outcome for the local community and everyone involved. “In just months this mural has gone from a simple idea to this beautiful piece of art we see before us,” Cr Ireland sad. “For that entre time young people from Springfield Lakes and nearby suburbs have been front and centre in the conceiving of and executing this project. “This gives local young people a real stake in this mural and a strong desire to see its beauty preserved for everyone’s enjoyment. “This mural serves a really important purpose in improving community safety in the area, but I’m also thrilled with how beautifully it’s turned out,” Cr Ireland said.

MY LOVE HAD A BLACK SPEED STRIPE

Presented by Fractal Theatre, Ipswich Festival, Ipswich Events Corporation, Studio 188, Ipswich City Council

My Love Had a Black Speed Stripe was originally adapted by Brenna Lee-Cooney from the Henry William’s novel for a La Boite/Brisbane Festival production featuring Eugene Gilfedder. Regarded by many as a ‘forgotten Australian Masterpiece’ and contemporaneous with The Cars That Ate Paris, My Love Had a Black Speed Stripe explores the dark obsession with cars evident in much of the Australian male’s psyche. This dynamic total theatre production draws on elements of circus, mime, body percussion and urban street poetry in a show that blurs the boundaries between dance, theatre and music performance. Bookings: www.trybooking.com/hawt 3821 8763

FIRE ON THE RIVER

Presented by River 94.9 in association with Limestone Dental Group

Fire on the River launches the festivities with a spectacular explosion of colours lighting up the night sky. Join us for an enthralling display of fireworks synchronised to a dedicated soundtrack that is sure to delight the whole family. This spectacular pyrotechnic display has become a festival favourite with a stunning showcase of the very best ‘feature’ fireworks and fire canons. Best vantage points are at Riverlink Shopping Centre and David Trumpy Bridge. This is an alcohol free event. Please note: Ipswich City Square Car Park Closures. Top Level 1 Exit of Ipswich City Square car park will be closed from 3 pm to 9 pm on Thursday 16 April. Please exit the car park at lower level 5 during this time. Date: Thursday 16 April Time:

OPERA ACOUSTICS

We invite you to join us for an evening featuring six singers from OperaQ in a glorious program of opera and song. Fresh from the success of its inaugural presentation in 2014, OperaQ will perform a concert inspired by the beauty, history and architecture of St Paul’s Anglican Church, Ipswich. Ipswich Libraries is firstly inviting young people of all ages to create a poppy to add to the special displays at all branches these school holidays. Young people and their families can drop into any branch during opening hours throughout the holidays from April 7 to 17 to collect a poppy making kit and they can either complete their poppy in the library or at home. This initiative is designed to allow the younger members of the community the opportunity to make their contribution to the Poppy a Day program that has been operating across all Ipswich Libraries in the lead up to ANZAC Day 2015. For those who prefer to make poppies in a workshop setting, the MakerSpace Poppy Creation Workshops will be held from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on April 9 at Orion Springfield Central and from 2pm to 3.30pm on April 15 at Ipswich Central Library. DEFENCE Aid to Vanuatu lifts off from RAAF Amberley The Australian Defence Force is continuing operations from RAAF Bases Amberley and Richmond to Port Vila in the wake of Cyclone Pam devastating large parts of Vanuatu in the South West Pacific. C-17A Globemaster III aircraft and crews of No 36 Squadron have been at the forefront of the humanitarian assistance delivering critical humanitarian aid and disaster relief supplies, personnel, stores and equipment to the island nation smashed by the cyclone. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said that assistance to Vanuatu would continue for “as long as it takes” to help the country recover from the devastation caused. C-130J Hercules aircraft are flying from Australia to Vanuatu as well as providing airlift

between Port Vila and outlying provinces. The Australian Defence Force has increased its response to the Australian aid mission to Vanuatu by deploying HMAS Tobruk to Vanuatu with 335 personnel onboard as well as an MRH-90 helicopter. This brings the total number of personnel in-country to nearly 600. Troops and equipment from the 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment and a Navy MRH90 Taipan helicopter embarked on the ship, also loaded with additional Australian Aid supplies. The ADF also deployed two Army Blackhawk helicopters along with crews to assist with mobility into isolated areas. The two Blackhawks are expected to begin flying missions during this week to the more remote islands, some of which remain cut off. Most of the islands either do not have airstrips or have only small, dirt runways. Also conducting air operations in Vanuatu are Air Force KA350 King Air aircraft on reconnaissance and local air movement. AP-3C Orion aircraft continue to fly imagery reconnaissance missions over Vanuatu.

Joint logistics facility open at Amberley RAAF Base Amberley has again reaffirmed its position as a Super Base within the Australian Defence Force, with the opening recently of a new $149 million joint logistics facility on the air base. This is the fourth of seven being constructed under the Defence Logistics Transformation Program, (DLTP), with a total program cost of $782 million. The new Amberley complex directly and indirectly employed 1,210 personnel during its construction. The warehouse holds a massive 6.5 million items stored at one central location, as opposed to spread over seven previous locations in southeast Queensland. The facility was officially opened by Air Vice Marshal Margaret Staib (Retd) in recognition of her significant achievements in the field of inventory management and as Commander Joint Logistics. JLU-SQ will hold Defence inventory items ranging from nuts and bolts to complex aircraft components. More than 350 loan vehicles can also stored at the facility, which can also store aircraft. Lieutenant Colonel Sue Graham, JLU-SQ Commanding Officer, said that the best part of her job is coming to work each day and seeing the facility running efficiently. “I’m very lucky it’s a fantastic job, particularly considering where we’ve been with World War 2 vintage facilities to this new state of the art warehouse,” Lt Col Graham said. “It has been a big job but the team has done a mountain of work to get to this point. Our role is to provide logistic support to over a hundred Defence units around the region. We

provide maintenance, warehouse distribution and there are many efficiencies we can generate all through one central hub. “The warehouse has over 300 staff across the public service, uniformed personnel and LinFox. Inside the warehouse it is run with a partnership through LinFox, and we have a Defence inventory barcode system to track every part.” Commander Joint Logistics, Rear Admiral Clint Thomas AM, RAN, said the Defence Logistics Transformation Program was a key reform program. “The ultimate beneficiaries of this work will be the women and men of the Navy, Army and Air Force, who rely on the delivery of fast and efficient logistics support, whether at home or abroad.” Right: Lt. The Young Diggers Dog Squad

DEFENCE

A second chance for soldiers, families and dogs

Welcome home parades for Operation SLIPPER troops Australia has marked the conclusion of Operation SLIPPER with commemorative activities conducted across each State and Territory capital city and Townsville. Australia’s military contribution to ISAF and ICAT missions across Afghanistan and the Middle East commenced in October 2001.

Australia deployed over 33,000 ADF personnel, APS employees and AFT officers to the Middle East Area of Operations. Below: RAAF Amberley personnel lead by Group Captain Simon Sauer march past the Treasury Casino during the Operation SLIPPER parade in Brisbane, Queensland. (Defence)

The Defence Bank Foundation is an independent charity established to help injured, wounded and disadvantaged serving and former Australian Defence Force members and their families. The Defence Bank Foundation, in partnership with the Young Diggers Dog Squad is providing a unique program. The Young Diggers Dog Squad is training rescued dogs to become Assistance Dogs to support the rehabilitation of our serving and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members who are dealing with PostTraumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). This program is helping more than just the individuals. The Dog Squad helps Defence families to better cope with the effects of PTSD and saves the lives of abandoned dogs. The Dog Squad is run entirely by the volunteers at Young Diggers and they need people like you to Donate or Sponsor a Dog to continue running the program. You are also helping save these abandoned dogs which are rescued from animal shelters. The dogs have proven to significantly improve their owner’s well-being and rehabilitation. Assistance Dogs help serving and ex-serving ADF members and their families better cope with the stresses and difficulties when

recovering from a wound or injury (including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). A dog can help the individual suffering a disability, to reduce the apprehension and fear of facing social interactions by being a constant companion and giving the individual back their independence. Additionally, the dogs provide a network for participants and their families to support one another through tough times. There are currently 300 people around Australia needing an Assistance Dog. For every $2,500 raised, we can rescue and train a Young Diggers Assistance Dog. To donate or find out more, go to www. defencebankfoundation.com.au

*Taylor Swift’s worldwide influence is penetrating every part of our lives, with her impact now being felt in the world of politics. First we had a US Congressman quote Taylor’s ‘Shake It Off’ when questioned about a scandal, saying “Haters gonna hate”, and now our own government is invoking the power of Tay-Tay! MP Andrew Broad quoted ‘Shake It Off’, complete with hand move, when talking about online bullying, saying “it’s a great example of a young, successful singer saying to her culture that bullying can happen. You can’t control what they’re going to say at you, but you can control you response to it.”

*They’ve been making headlines all week, labelled the “nastiest pair on TV”, but the public condemnation isn’t over yet for New Zealand X Factor judges Natalia Kills and Willy Moon. Now, a judge from the UK version of the show has weighed in on the sacking of the “cruel” couple, claiming Kills will “never work again”. In an interview with Irish radio station RTE2fm, Louis Walsh said: “Number one, I don’t know who they are,” adding that he is “glad” the duo lost their jobs. “It’s cruel, it’s not right. These shows are supposed to be fun. People sit back and they want to be entertained, they don’t want to hear people taking people to pieces,” the Irishman said. “She obviously has no class, no taste, she’ll never work again I reckon, honestly. I mean, who’s going to hire her? Nobody.” Despite being fired from the talent show, Kills insists she stands by her comments made during Sunday night’s live show, which saw her brand young contestant Joe Irvine “disgusting” and said she was “ashamed” to be judging him. The pair have since packed their bags and left New Zealand. They were snapped at Auckland International Airport late last week on a plane bound for Los Angeles. Till next time… Louise

*It’s that time of year again, with the six stars in contention for the coveted Gold Logie announced last week. Scott Cam (The Block) is looking to win back-to-back Gold Logies, nominated for a second year alongside Asher Keddie (Offspring, Party Tricks), comedy duo Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, The Project presenter Carrie Bickmore and Stephen Peacocke (Home and Away). All six have been nominated for a Gold Logie in previous years while only Cam, Keddie and Blake have taken out the honours. It has been an extra big week for both women Keddie and Bickmore, with both welcoming new arrivals to their family. “It’s a nice thing to be recognised by both your audience and your peers,” Keddie told TV Week. “It’s a special moment that’s not lost on me.” Carrie Bickmore humbly added, “Every year I am shocked [by the nomination].” “I am just genuinely happy to be nominated, and a bit blown away by the time we get there on the actual night!”

*Much-loved British author Terry Pratchett died recently, leaving a massive back catalogue of great books behind. One of Britain’s most successful authors, he wrote more than 70 books, and continued to write even after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2007. Many of Pratchett’s books were based on an imaginary disc-shaped world carried on the back of four elephants, which themselves stood on the shell of a giant turtle (sex unknown). The fantasy writer sold more than 85 million books, which have been translated into 37 languages. “Terry passed away in his home, with his cat sleeping on his bed, surrounded by his family,” Larry Finlay, managing director at Transworld Publishers, said. He said the world had lost one of its “brightest, sharpest minds”.

Talking Beer WITH TIM AT THE PA HOTEL

Wine, Wonderful Wine! McLaren Vale is home to many of Australia’s premiere wineries. One winery in particular that springs to mind is Woodstock Wines, which is run today by the world-renowned Scott Collett. Scott took over the running of Woodstock from his father in 1982 and released a range of wines under the Woodstock name in 1983. One of Woodstock’s award winning wines is ‘The Octogenarian’ Grenache Tempranillo. Produced from a mix of eighty-year-old Grenache vines and young Tempranillo vines, ‘The Octogenarian’ is bright, ruby red in colour with vibrant purple hues. A lifted nose displaying enticing aromatics of rhubarb, raspberries, plums, with hints of caraway seed, anise and subtle white pepper spice. Contrasting on the palate with rich flavoursome red cherries balanced by a bright acid structure and soft yet crunchy tannins. Medium body in style with a long lingering finish and classic Grenache texture. This smooth and harmonious blend could match many flavoursome dishes such as slow cooked roasts of pork or even Indian curries. Another of Woodstock’s top wines is their ‘Pilot’s View’ Shiraz, named for Scott’s father who flew Spitfires in World War II. Like it’s namesake, ‘Pilot’s View’ Shiraz shows plenty of animation and character with a powerful yet balanced structure. Dark

MONEY & PROPERTY

Real estate hits 5-year high

MATTERS

Residential real estate sales in Queensland have hit a five-year high, according to new statistics from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland.

Savers in Strife? BY MARK BOURIS

Low rates are leaving savers in strife Australia’s official cash rate has not been this low for 60 years and while it’s good for home buyers and refinancers, what of the people who have their money invested in cash? People who are saving or who’ve reverted to the capital-guaranteed haven of cash, have little to celebrate. Core inflation is running at around 2.25 per cent, according to the Reserve Bank, and that’s the same rate you currently earn in a standard online savings account. People who are relying on such investments to fund their retirement should be reminded of inflation risk: the risk that inflation devalues your purchasing power to such an extent that the returns you make cannot offset the inflation. If your investment yield is the same as inflation, you actually do worse than zero because you are taxed on your earnings. So what do you do? If you need to be in lowrisk investments, try these alternatives: Bonus savings accounts: they will pay around 1 per cent higher than the standard online savers, but some only pay the bonus interest for 3-4 months; others require that you deposit at least $1000 per month; others have withdrawal limits. 30-day notice accounts: they pay you a slightly higher interest rate than standard online accounts, but you must give 30 days notice of withdrawal. It looks like a 30-day term deposit, but in a term deposit you can break early, pay the penalty, and still get your money out. Term deposits: term deposits are a safe haven for savings, with a government capitalguarantee up to $250,000. But their rates have been falling (along with fixed-rate mortgages) and now range from 2.35 per cent for a 90-day TD to 2.75 per cent in a three-year TD. Aftertax, the returns are very low.

Fixed interest: fixed interest is how professionals make low-risk investments, through a fund. The fund managers invest not only in cash but bonds, so they maintain low risk but achieve higher returns than cash. There’s more than 40 fixed interest fund managers in Australia and their ratios of cash-to-bonds are all slightly different. Their returns range from around 4 to 7.5 per cent. If capital preservation is your priority, make sure you understand the investment mandate that your manager operates under because this tells you how much risk you’re exposed to. Be aware also that there are government, semigovernment and corporate bonds, and they have different ratings: an investment-grade bond must at least BBB- as rated by Standard & Poors. Fees: always be aware of fees and their effect on your returns. Super: if you’re heading for retirement or you’re already there, you should try to have your cash investments working inside the superannuation system, because the tax concessions help to preserve your capital and increase your compound. Finally, achieving reasonable returns while also maintaining a low risk portfolio, is not easy when the cash rate is so low. If you are unsure, consult an expert adviser. The fresh data reveals Queensland recorded $51 billion worth of residential real estate transactions in 2014, the highest level since 2010. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said sales volumes also hit a five year high in 2014, with approximately 114,000 transactions recorded throughout the State. “The value of transactions in Queensland in 2014 was below the peak of $73 billion recorded in 2007, but there’s a very encouraging upward trend which is great news for homeowners,” she said. “2003 still holds the record for the most number of transactions in a calendar year, however sales volumes are clearly heading in the right direction. “Plus in another encouraging sign, there’s been a significant rise in the number of suburbs where every vendor made a profit on sale. “In 2014, there were 49 Queensland suburbs where every property sold at a profit, up from just 22 suburbs in 2013.” Ms Mercorella said Brisbane dominated the list of 100 per cent profit-making suburbs, with Albion, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Ferny Grove and Upper Mount Gravatt making the list. “In the eastern suburbs, Gumdale recorded Brisbane’s biggest increase in profit-making sales, with transactions up 33 per cent,” she said. “Tara on the Western Darling Downs

recorded the biggest increase in profit-making sales anywhere in the State, with an impressive rise of 36 per cent. “Other strong performers included Goombungee, north of Toowoomba (up 27 per cent) and Caravonica, north of Cairns (up 26 per cent). “Meanwhile on the Gold Coast, 100 per cent of vendors in Mermaid Beach made a profit on sale in 2014, as the city’s prestige real estate market continues to bounce back.” Ms Mercorella said Queensland’s prestige real estate market was starting to fire on all cylinders, particularly in the $1 million-plus price bracket. “Around 2,600 properties across 320 suburbs changed hands for more than $1 million in 2014, predominantly in the Southeast,” she said “The $1 million-plus price point was Queensland’s strongest performer in the December 2014 quarter, with sales volumes up 17 per cent across the state.” However some regional areas also notched up a healthy volume of prestige sales, including Townsville where 10 properties sold for upwards of $1 million. Hamilton in Brisbane took out the highest individual sale – with a house selling for $7.125 million, followed by a $5.15 million sale in Teneriffe and a $5.1 million sale in Currumbin. Source: REIQ

Save the Hooters! fundraiser The staff at Lifestyle Health Club in Raceview are holding a charity fundraiser on April 11th to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and everyone is invited to get hot and sweaty! Manager Darrin Norwood came up with the idea to do what he could to help a great cause, and has arranged a full day of different exercise classes, where a gold coin donation will go directly to the Foundation. The day will consist of seven 45 minute classes including Bike Blitz, Body balance, Fitbox, Extreme Fitness Conditioning, Body Pump, Kaos Core, and Hot Yoga. There will be a BBQ, prizes, and raffles, all to raise money for the ‘Save The Hooters’ day. “All the classes will be 45 minutes long, and anyone can do them, you don’t need to be of any particular fitness level. We want Ipswich to work out with us and raise money for a great cause,” Darrin said.

“I’ve noticed a change in Ipswich since we were crowned the ‘unhealthy’ city. Things have changed in the last year or so, and it’s a chance to show off the new, healthy Ipswich for charity, and I chose the Breast Cancer Foundation as there aren’t too many people around who doesn’t know someone who has been affected by Breast Cancer. “Plus there is a ‘Booby Prize’ of anyone who does three classes will get a one month membership as a bonus…so what have you got to lose Ipswich?” For more information call 3281 6779. Happy Birthday, ’Bulli’! Some veterans retire at age 65 but this one is just getting started! Production of the first Volkswagen Transporter began in 1950 and the ‘Bulli’ is still going strong today. The first models were built in Wolfsburg before production started at a new facility in Hanover in 1950. This date also marks the beginning of a unique automotive love story: today, the entire model series has attained cult status. Whether hippy or tradesman — everyone is driving Transporter.
It all began in 1947 with a pencil sketch: the Dutch car importer Ben Pon saw a simple flat-bed vehicle at the Volkswagen plant and, taking it as a basic idea, he sketched the outlines of a Transporter with Beetle DNA in his notebook.

Two years later, Volkswagen Plant Manager, Heinrich Nordhoff, presented four prototypes: two panel vans, a kombi and a small bus. Nordhoff promised that the Transporter would be as uncompromising and robust as the Beetle: ‘These vehicles won’t be handled with kid gloves, rather they will be treated roughly.’

Designers used the engine and axles of the Beetle. Instead of a central tubular frame of the popular family car, the bus had a unitized body that was mounted on a ladder frame. The 1.1-litre engine produced 18 kW (24.5PS) at 3300 rpm. The bus could transport up to eight people and the two rear seat rows could be removed easily to free up load space for around 750 kg of payload.
In March 1956, the first “Made in Stöcken” Transporters came off the assembly line. This was the beginning of a future symbol of the ‘economic wonder years’. Today, a total of 11 million T-series vehicles spanning five generations have

Audi A6 and S6 arrive in Australia The multiple award-winning Audi A6 has been comprehensively refreshed, with contemporary design elements, intelligent technology innovations, new engines and an even higher level of standard equipment than Audi has ever offered in this segment. “The A6 range is the epitome of a sophisticated luxury sedan, and now, more than ever, the new optimised range of A6 variants offer the ideal mode of transport for successful business people, thanks to numerous improvements which have been made,” said Andrew Doyle, Managing Director, Audi Australia Pty Ltd. “The A6 range is now more powerful, yet more efficient, and offers even greater value across its broad range of engines from the new 1.8 TFSI, to the mighty Audi S6 V8. For drivers who value innovation, performance, sophistication and exceptional quality, the new Audi A6 and S6 range delivers significant developments in all of these areas, as well as another key requirement: outstanding value,” said Mr Doyle. The new A6 features a wider, flatter single

frame grille that is consistent with the latest evolution of the Audi design language. The refreshed exterior styling is accentuated by sharper lines and tauter surfaces from frontto-rear, which combine to portray a more dynamic overall design. The new high-resolution Driver Information System (DIS) sits in between the speedometer and tachometer readouts, and can display crystal-clear map-based navigation right in the driver’s natural field of vision. This intelligent ergonomic innovation from Audi is powered by the new-generation MIB2 infotainment system, which itself is driven by the latest Nvidia Tegra 30 quad-core processor. The Audi Group
The Audi Group delivered approximately 1,741,100 cars of the Audi brand to customers in 2014.

Honda release 40th Anniversary Goldwing To celebrate four decades of the unique and enduring appeal of the Honda Goldwing, Honda are releasing a 40th Anniversary model in Australia.

been produced worldwide.

Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Chairman of the Brand Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: ‘The production launch of the T1 represented the beginning of a long success story that has lasted right up to today. In the past, as well as the present, there is market demand for extremely reliable, versatile and individual vehicles. We deliver them in top quality and precisely tailored to every need – whether the vehicle is for trades work, a retail or service business, family or recreation.’

Production of the new generation model, the T6, launches this year. Along with the T-series, the Hannover-Stöcken plant also produces the Amarok pick up. The successful California recreational vehicle is built not far away in Limmer. Around 12,200 people are employed at the Hannover business site of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

The Poznan plant in Poland (5,700 employees) produces the Transporter and the Caddy, and another plant is being built in nearby, Wrzesnia for the new Crafter. Today, a total of around 19,500 employees work for the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand.

The special-edition Goldwing comes in a stunning two-tone paintwork with blacked out wheels, forks, swingarm and muffler plus the 40th Anniversary badging to mark this special release. Whilst the Goldwing has continually evolved since its release in 1975, it has retained its outstanding reputation for a unique twowheel experience. Riders recognise the difference on their first ride and continue to experience it. The Goldwing has set the golden standard in the motorcycle industry for four decades and the latest anniversary model continues the trend with a Manufacturer’s List Price of $36,299*. The Goldwing’s fuelinjected, horizontally opposed six-cylinder 1832cc engine is as much a part of the Goldwing legend as the name or the sales success. Both exceptionally smooth and incredibly powerful, the “flat” six-cylinder design offers a lower centre

of gravity for an improved ride and a lighter handling feel. The 2015 model adopts the latest technology from Honda, including SRS CS Auto 6-speaker 80W surround-sound system, Honda Navigation System, Heated seats and Handlebars as well as a Foot-warming system. The 150 litre luggage capacity makes the Goldwing the perfect long distance ally. The shape of the machine, sculpted by CFD (Computational Flow Dynamics), actively contributes to aerodynamic stability and reduces buffeting for rider and pillion. * Price excludes on-road costs
