FROM THE

EDITOR

Darren Hallesy

It’s My Life Well here it is, the NEW LOOK Ipswich LIfe which is timed to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of Strike Publications. From small beginnings, and over several name changes, Ipswich Life is now poised to not only continue to be the magazine of choice, but a publication that people WANT to read and be seen in. We will always continue to bring our readers all the good things about living in Ipswich, and keep you informed of local news and events, along with the best in celebrity interviews, giveaways, motoring, and of course, pages for all our Defence readers. Did you know that personnel at RAAF Amberley contribute millions of dollars into the Ipswich economy every year? Without our friends on the base, Ipswich wouldn’t be flourishing like it is now, so we take our hats off to all the ADF staff who have chosen to make Ipswich home. We hope you like the new look of Ipswich Life, and please let us know what you think, or if there is anything you’d like to see in upcoming issues. Remember that Ipswich Life is FREE to you thanks to our advertisers, so let them know you saw it in Ipswich Life! Enjoy... darren@strikepublications.com.au

25 YEARS

BUSINESS

Strike Publications celebrates 25 years

[

As publisher of IpswichLife magazine, Strike Publications is proud to have been an integral part of the Ipswich business community for the past 25 years. We are part of Ipswich, we promote the best things about Ipswich, and we continue to grow with this great city.

That is the main reason we are relaunching IpswichLife with a whole new look, in line with the exciting future of this great city of Ipswich. Over the years we have seen many changes in the city’s landscape, with fantastic improvements in facilities and lifestyle. And we have seen many changes in our own industry, with three major press titles establishing a presence here, succeeding for a while, but eventually going away. IpswichLife is still here, and remains the only full colour lifestyle magazine published fortnightly – produced, printed and distributed wholly in Ipswich. We are proud of this position we hold within the city. As with a number of small business enterprises, Strike had humble beginnings. In 1989, working out of a small office located on RAAF Base Amberley, Strike Publications produced ‘Strike Newspaper’ for RAAF Base Amberley personnel and families, many of whom were new to the community. We are proud of the fact that we have been a major influence in the strong connection that exists between the Air Base and the Ipswich community, and to this day we are still the only community magazine delivered to all working areas on the air base. Today, the evolved IpswichLife is now distributed across the whole Ipswich region,

including Springfield and Karana Downs – and this, together with our move into offices in the Ipswich CBD in 2012, has strengthened our position within the business community. Over the years we have also been leaders in publishing technology; one of the first media organisations more than 10 years ago to prepare our magazine for printing using computer-based applications. The traditional cut-and-paste is long gone, thanks to digital techology that we were one of the first to use. We have always looked to the future, and we see great things ahead for Ipswich and the ever-expanding Springfield region. While major newspapers seem to be shrinking, we see a firm place for locally produced, locally focused magazines such as IpswichLife. Judging by feedback from our readers and advertisers, there is an increasing need for publications that support the community and business sectors in the local region. We can guarantee that this will be our focus with IpswichLife now and into the future. While concentrating on IpswichLife as our flagship publication we will continue to produce our other publications. Our national Defence capabilities magazine ‘DefenceToday’ covers the latest developments in Defence and Defence Industry, while our annual DefenceLife magazine for families on the

“We have embarked on an exciting new venture, with a completely redesigned IpswichLife magazine dedicated to promoting Ipswich as a great place to live, work and do business. Our new tagline ‘It’s my life’ says what we are about: a principal focus on the life our readers enjoy in the Ipswich region.” John Armstrong Leann O’Donoghue move, transitioning to new careers, and eventually resettling in civilian life. Many of those families will call Ipswich home. My business partner for the past 25 years, Leann O’Donoghue, and I would like to thank our loyal advertisers and our readers for their support in making Ipswich our business home for more than two decades. Ipswich has come of age during our time in business but there are even more exciting times ahead, as the population increases and infrastructure continues to improve. Ipswich has a bright future and IpswichLife will be there to report on it.

Fast Cook - Skinny Spaghetti Bolognaise Recipe from Mimi Spencer’s new cookbook, ‘Fast Cook’

Only 180 calories per portion. Serves 4 A family classic, but here I’ve lowered the GI count and raised the fibre by bumping up the veg. My father always adds mixed spice to his bolognaise sauce, and I’d recommend its addition for an authentic Italian touch. • Cooking oil spray • 400g lean minced beef • 1 large onion, diced • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 celery stick, diced • 1 red pepper, diced • 200g mushrooms, chopped • 1/2 tsp mixed herbs • 1 tsp mixed spice • 1 400g tin cherry tomatoes

• 3 tbsp tomato puree • 1 courgette, diced • 200ml beef stock • 1 tsp Vegemite • Salt and pepper Spray a large pan with a little oil, fry off the meat until browned and set aside. This is an important stage as the sugars from the meat will lend your bolognaise colour and flavour. Add onion, celery and pepper to the pan and cook gently for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add mushrooms, herbs, mixed spice, tomatoes and tomato purée and cook for a further 3 minutes. Add browned mince and courgette, together with the stock and Marmite. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes – longer if possible to enrich the sauce. Check seasoning and serve.

Apprentices leading the way in Ipswich

[

]

It’s not all gloom and doom in the job market, with a growing number of apprenticeships on the rise, and Ipswich is making the most of a State Government promise to create up to10,000 apprentice positions.

Assistant Minister for Technical and Further Education Saxon Rice and Member for Ipswich Ian Berry visited Llewellyn Motors to highlight the Queensland Government’s election commitment to the program. “We’ve introduced the $10 million ‘School to Trade Pathway’ program as part of the ‘Great Skills, Real Opportunities’ action plan, which gives employers a $5,000 bonus for retaining their school-based apprentice in full-time work after they leave school, and the $3 million Group Training Additional Apprentice Bonus. “To achieve our ambitious unemployment target, we made an election commitment to invest $86 million over six years to create an extra 10,000 apprentice and trainee commencements,” Ms Rice said. “We’ve reduced red tape, removed unnecessary regulation and established solid partnerships with industry, employers and individuals, especially in relation to apprenticeships and traineeships. “We’ve also reduced barriers to attract and retain apprentices through nationally consistent regulation arrangements and made it easier for employers to take on, train and retain apprentices and trainees.” Member for Ipswich Ian Berry said training and employment was a key priority, providing specialised training to create career options. “I am keen to ensure that Ipswich residents have the opportunity to access training and employment opportunities,” Mr Berry said. “Llewellyn Motors has been working with Apprenticeships Queensland to employ local apprentices and trainees and it’s clear that the partnership is paying off,” Ms Rice added. Apprenticeships Queensland General Manager David Handyside said his organisation has been operating in the region for the last 27 years employing and managing over 3000

apprentices and trainees. “This would not have been possible without employers like Llewellyn Motors and many others, who understand the benefit of training for their businesses,” Mr Handyside said. Claire Brown is a prime example of the apprentice program’s benefits, who now drives from Parkinson every day to her job as an apprentice at Llewellyn Motors. “My apprenticeship here is four years, and at the end I’d love to stay in the trade,” Claire said. “I really love the physical stuff, fixing something on a car is my favourite thing to do.” Llewellyn Motors Service Manager Adam Jeffrey said that about half of the service workforce consists of apprentices. “All up we have about twenty nine apprentices, which is about half our service workforce. There are always people moving on to other roles, as you find in any big business, but using Apprenticeships Queensland means they have staff ready to go which suits us. “I’ve had apprentices move up into service advising roles and really excel at their job. It is a hard trade, but its an industry that’s constantly changing, especially with the growth in car electronics,” Mr Jeffrey said. CBD safety in the spotlight Ipswich Councillor Andrew Antoniolli has reassured the Ipswich public that the CBD is safe as it always has been. Highlighted by the recent Safe City Conference held in Ipswich, the number of cameras and increased patrols by police is set to keep the area safe for residents, despite recent negative publicity. “Combatting crime and improving residents’ sense of personal safety on our streets is the number one priority,” Cr Antoniolli said. “In the twenty years that Safe City cameras have been in operation, over 9,000 arrests have been made as a direct result of this footage and serious crime has all but vanished. “It doesn’t matter how many people are arrested as a result of Council’s partnership with police through our Safe City program, the hardest thing to arrest is people’s perception of safety. “The message is that police and our local laws officers are regularly in the Mall and Bell Street ensuring the residents of Ipswich not only are safe but feel safe, and those people who wish to spoil it for everyone else will be targeted.” Ipswich Police District Inspector Michelle Stenner stressed the commitment to keeping Ipswich safe for residents and visitors. “Police and Ipswich City Council are in total partnership to prevent, tackle and deal with crime in Ipswich,” Inspector Stenner said. “The Ipswich Police Division has implemented a number of proactive policing

strategies over the past 12 months which has resulted in an increased police presence in and around the Ipswich Mall and CBD. “Our officers are dedicated to making Ipswich a safer place to live and work and it is important for the community to know that we are actively out there walking the streets, patrolling the parks and schools. “We want to get message out to the Ipswich community about what the police and the Council are doing, regarding the increased presence of officers in the Mall, mainly dealing with the offences that concern people the most…like loiterers and troublemakers, disturbing the enjoyment of the Mall. We’re not just talking about the Mall, that includes Bell Street and the Top of Town precinct.” Inspector Stenner said the recent attack on two local restaurant staff was, after checking records, the first major incident in the mall in around 15 years. She said that the cameras can do the job of several police at the same time. “The cameras make our job so much easier, you cannot underestimate the contribution they make. We are in a vehicle, we can’t see everything, but as soon as Safe City sees something they are on to us. They have a direct live feed to the Ipswich police station and we can respond fast.” Above: Environment & Health Officer (E&HO) Lorraine O’Donnell, Const. Justin Barnard, Snr Constable Tim Stephens, E&HO Helen Murphy and (front) Inspector Michelle Stenner with Cr Andrew Antoniolli form the team to keep the Ipswich CBD safe.

For most of us the thought of doing just one half marathon would be out of the question, so imagine what inspires a group of runners who vow to do 12 marathons in 12 months, all to help rescue children from sexual slavery.

Linda Thomson is part of a team who have set themselves a goal to complete the half marathons once a month through until the end of the year. “I saw this charity on the Internet and thought it was such a good cause, as it’s a pretty horrible thing to happen to a child, and it’s in the news recently with the missing children taken in Africa. There’s a whole range of situations when children can be taken. “We have runners from Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Some of us are friends and some jumped on board when they heard about what we’re doing for charity. “It’s amazing how many races like this are on around South East Queensland. For most of the year there are about nine or ten registered races, there’s only been a couple of months where there hasn’t been a run, so we’ve made our own 21 km course,” Linda said. “I have to say the Mt Cootha run was pretty hard and I’d only done a couple before, and we have people who had never done one before. “Our first run was Yamanto to Springfield along the new road, that was good as it was rather flat. Its a great therapy session, you have time to think about things going on in your life, you have so much solitude. “There are times where you just want to stop and walk, but usually your mental strength

has to come in and it forces you to keep going. Plus we want to beat our own times.“ To date the team has raised over $1200, and with a goal of $15,000 they have six months to raise the money to save some children. So what advice would Linda give to someone who has never done it and what do you do after running that much? “After a marathon I personally like to sleep, just crash for a few hours and take it easy. You need to spend a couple of days at least to let your body recover. “We all belong to the PCYC gym and we do a lot of strength training which is important for runs like this. I’d recommend it to anyone, especially if you can raise money for a good cause. “There are times you think during the run ‘why am I doing this?’, you find the next day you just want to do it again!” You can donate to the team via www.everydayhero. com.au and search for “12 half marathons”, or via this direct link https://give.

“We have a team of ten runners who are doing one half marathon a month, and all money raised goes to the charity ‘Destiny Rescue which rescues children from sexual slavery in five countries around the world” - Linda Thomson, marathon runner everydayhero.com/au/12-half-marathons-in12-months or call Linda on 0400 040 578. The team has also organised an end of year gala and fundraising event at Queens Park Cafe on November 15th. For more information contact Linda directly. Shane Jacobsen – having the time of his life STAR CHAT CELEBRITY NEWS

[

When it comes to entertainment, there isn’t much that Shane Jacobsen hasn’t done. As the loveable plumber ‘Kenny’ that shot him to worldwide fame, to hosting the Aussie version of ‘Top Gear’, or to playing a detective in the hit series ‘Fat Tony & Co’, Jacobsen is a man with many talents.

Currently starring in season two of the highly acclaimed ABC series ‘The Time of Our Lives’, Jacobsen took time to talk with Ipswich Life about his work, and about his book ‘The Long Road to Overnight Success’ which hit the best seller list earlier this year. The obvious question you have to ask Shane is about how often people think he really is ‘Kenny’, the loveable plumber that created laughs all over the world, and gave rise to classic lines such as “It’s about as silly as a bum full of smarties”. “Quite often people ask me am I sick about talking about Kenny, and the answer is no, because I think its better to be remembered for something you’ve done, than be remembered for nothing at all. “When we were making the movie we just wanted people to enjoy it. We loved the character, and what happened, which I find interesting, is that some people in entertainment don’t want to talk about old projects,” Shane said. “I find it inconceivably flattering that people remember it, so I’m not going to turn my back on it. It’s like people saying ‘my son was born six months ago, but we’ve moved on’. “We think people loved Kenny because he’s just an ordinary bloke. He sees the good in everyone, all the time he’d say ‘good on ya’. There are people out there like that, no matter

what you say to them. You could want to be a photographer and everyone will try to talk you out of it, but he’d say ‘good on ya’. “Elderly people are like that, when they talk to their grandchildren…that quality is what Kenny had, those old values. He was happy doing what he was doing. For example, I have friends who are mechanics. They say they love it, and I love nothing more than hearing people talk about a job they love. I saw the postman in my street one day and he was not on his motorbike but a pushbike. I asked him why, and he said he wanted more exercise. He was riding a bike and getting paid for it. Honestly, you couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. That’s success.“ The idea for the book, the aptly titled ‘Long Road to Overnight Success’ came about after Shane had been writing articles about cars, and he realised that he told a good story. “I was approached to write this book about my life. I’d never considered it. I didn’t think I should, as a felt in my mind that authors are people who have something to tell the world, but I felt at 43 I didn’t have that right. Then I was told I’m just telling stories, I’m just telling a yarn, and the process began.” It seemed that Shane was destined to be in entertainment. WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE The Listening Post With Ian Berry MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH

We live in a strong and vibrant community that symbolises everything that makes Queensland beautiful one day, perfect the next. Ipswich, like all communities throughout Queensland; relies on a vast network of volunteers. Our volunteers have, time and time again, shown their selfless dedication to our community by supporting numerous organisations and events. The outpouring of generosity and support in the wake of national disasters is also a tribute to the volunteering spirit that defines Ipswich. But it’s not only in difficult times that our volunteers shine, it is every day. Whether it be in our schools, sporting clubs, health and front line emergency services and everything in between; our volunteers strive to make a difference. It cannot be denied that if not for their tireless efforts and commitment; many organisations would grind to a halt and the wonderful opportunities that so many of us enjoy, would disappear. I join all Ipswich residents in thanking our volunteers for their years of service to our community and I encourage everyone to get involved and help shape a brighter future so that Ipswich remains a great place to live, work and raise a family. New site to attract filmmakers to Ipswich

Eye-catching images of Ipswich can now be found on a special online database, part of the Screen Queensland Reel Scout System - a location search database.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Council was thrilled to be able to be part of this innovative project with Screen Queensland. “Last year Screen Queensland purchased a database system to give the public access to thousands of images and data from Screen Queensland’s online locations gallery, crew and facilities directory” Cr Pisasale said. Cr Pisasale said the Film Ipswich webpage is linked to Screen Queensland’s location gallery to ensure that all images located in Ipswich could be featured in the database as soon as they become available. “Council would also welcome any photos for sharing to the database from the community or film makers working in Ipswich.” He said Ipswich City Council was excited to be part of the new database. “Interest in filming in Ipswich has been steadily increasing, particularly over the past several years as the industry learns of our locations and proximity to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “We will now be able to promote the wonderful locations within our city that would be great as a movie backdrop and filmmakers can visit the database when they are looking for the ideal location for an upcoming production. “It will also give potential investors in the city the chance to view a gallery of local images. “This system is already been used in a number of locations around Australia and we believe it holds enormous potential for the promotion of our city in the future.” Cr Pisasale said council had also developed a single application form to streamline the processes when film makers want to use the city’s landmarks in their projects. No charge will be levied for the applications. “In the past film producers had to undergo a series of applications to gain approvals to use our city as a backdrop for their movies. “A growing number of location scouts and producers have sought approvals with the

city and this has resulted in us hosting the filming of a number of feature films including ‘The Railway Man’ and ‘Savages Crossing’, telemovie ‘Parer’s War’, several television series, short films, documentaries and a number of television commercials. Not to mention the recent visit to town of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who filmed ‘San Andreas 3D’.” Cr Pisasale said Ipswich City Council had been communicating with Screen Queensland, Gold Coast City Council, Brisbane City Council and a variety of film producers and location scouts as part of researching current practices and trade preferences. “Film makers were keen to have one single point of contact with councils for all application and approvals so this is what we have delivered.

“As participants in the Screen Queensland Film Friendly Program, Council has decided to purchase a licence to allow us to be part of this database. The Reel-Scout System is state of the art and will bring Queensland into line with more than 100 film commissions from around the world.” - Ipswich Mayor, Cr Paul Pisasale “Council’s contact point for film makers is located within the Office of Economic Development which has fielded a number of inquiries from film makers over the past couple of years.” The Film Ipswich database can be accessed at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/filmipswich

25 YEARS

MUSIC 1989 1. Repeat Offender - Richard Marx 2. Cocktail Soundrack 3. Beaches Soundtrack Just goes to show we’re still paying for the 80’s, Tom Cruise is still making bad movies and radio stations STILL play Richard Marx. 1990 1. All Or Nothing – Milli Vanilli 2. Pretty Woman Soundtrack 3. Jimmy Barnes – Two Fires Oh dear. Doesn’t say much for the year of 1990 when two blokes with no talent who admitted not even singing on the best selling album of the year still sat top of the charts for five weeks. 1991 1. Eurythmics Greatest Hits 2. Natalie Cole – Unforgettable 3. Michael Jackson – Dangerous Ah the Eurythmics….how good were they? I’ll never forget the first time I heard ‘Sweet Dreams’…my mind EXPLODED, and it was the last big album for Michael Jackson, just before he started to go a bit loopy.... just a bit. 1992 1. Jesus Christ Superstar 2. Baby Animals – Baby Animals 3. Lionel Richie – Back to Front It was a good year for Aussie music sales with the concert spectacular of Jesus Christ Superstar keeping the soundtrack on top for ten weeks. Not bad for a show that first appeared in the early 1970s! 1993 1. The Bodyguard Soundtrack 2. Meat Loaf – Bat Out Of Hell II 3. U2 – Zooropa Whitney Houston sang THAT song that you either loved or wanted to rip your ears off. Famously responsible for a court order being issued in the UK by a woman who played ‘I Will Always Love You’ for 9 hours a day, and drove her neighbours batty. True story. Google it if you don’t believe us!

We thought it might be fun to have a look at some of the best selling albums from the last 25 years. In that time we’ve seen Vinyl, Cassettes, Boom Boxes, 7 inch, 12 inch, Walkmans, iPods, CDs, iTunes, Digital downloads…so many changes. We’ve compiled the top three albums from each year and boy did it bring back some memories. Some good. Some bad. Some downright embarrasing. Compiled by Darren Hallesy (80s Tragic and proud of it)

1994 1. Mariah Carey – Music Box 2. Bryan Adams – So Far So Good 3. Priscilla - Soundtrack Yes kids, Mariah Carey was THAT popular. An album that spawned so many top ten hits it kept jumping up to the number one spot over and over, sitting there for 18 weeks in total over the year. 1995 1. Live – Throwing Copper 2. Enya – The Memory of Trees 3. Green Day – Dookie It was the year we saw Silverchair and Green Day at their peak, it was a year that also produced number one albums for You Am I, AC/DC, The Cruel Sea and Tina Arena. Definitely a good year for the Aussie music scene! 1996 1. Toni Childs – Best of 2. Oasis - Morning Glory 3. Metallica – Loud It was the year Oasis took over the world, and it was HUGE. WonderWall, and Champagne Super Nova sent them into superstardom…for a while anyway. 1997 1. Savage Garden 2. Romeo + Juliet Soundtrack 3. Celene Dion - Let’s Talk About Love 1997 belonged to Queensland, when Savage Garden produced an album that topped the charts all over the world. Not bad for a couple of blokes from BrisVegas. Responsible for ‘Truly, Madly, Deeply’ – a song that has played at Aussie weddings across the nation ever since. 1998 1. Titanic – Soundtrack 2. Matchbox 20 – Yourself or Someone Like You 3. U2 – The Best Of It was the year we all cried our eyes out as Kate Winslet said “I won’t let go Jack.” If only she’d moved over a bit on that silly piece of wood .... then we raced out to buy the soundtrack, keeping it on top of the charts for nearly three months.

1999 1. Shania Twain - Come On Over 2. Bee Gees – One Night Only 3. Songs from Dawson Creek Dawson’s Creek? What? You mean that show on Foxtel ‘Classics’ was THAT popular? Yes it was, but not as popular as Shania Twain who stayed at number one for a mammoth 20 weeks. Hmmm…that don’t impress me much. LOL. 2000 1. 1 – The Beatles 2. Oh How Life Is – Macy Gray 3. Affirmation – Savage Garden The start of the new millennium and it was a band from the 1960s that had the best selling album of the year! Who would’ve thought…and Macy Gray? Whatever happened to her? 2001 1. Moulin Rouge – Soundtrack 2. Dido – No Angel 3. Coyote Ugly – Soundtrack Have to confess I’ve never seen Coyote Ugly. Anyhoo, though it sold very well it was outdone by Nicole Kidman who back then made movies that were big hits & Moulin Rouge was no exception proving a smash hit around the world. 2002 1. The Eminem Show – Eminem 2. Let Go – Avril Lavine 3. A Funk Odyssey – Jamiroquai That rapping chap from 8 Mile skyrocketed to fame with his quirky videos, equal with Sk8r Boi’s Avril Lavine. Was it a good year for music? Yes, if you like rap, grunge and funk....grlfnd!!! 2003 1. Innocent Eyes – Delta Goodrem 2. Come Away With Me – Norah Jones 3. Just As I Am – Guy Sebastian Yes, that girl from ‘The Voice’ actually DID sell a lot of albums, and 2003 was Delta’s year, with one album hogging the number one spot for 29 weeks!

2004 1.Greatest - Robbie Williams 2. The Sound of White – Missy Higgins 3. Feeler – Pete Murray Twas the year of Robbie, with his Greatest Hits package pumping out the hits and firming him as a radio favourite ever since. Altogether now, let’s sing “Angels”….. 2005 1. Back to Bedlam – James Blunt 2.In Your Honor – Foo Fighters 3. In Between Dreams – Jack Johnson James Blunt owned 2005 with his album which produced tons of top ten hits which are still played today…and loathed at the same time. Truth that all publicity is good publicity. Just don’t insult him on Twitter, he pays back big time. 2006 1. Winner’s Journey–Damien Leith 2. Dancing In The Street Human Nature 3. Black Fingernails, Red Wine - Eskimo Joe Damien who? The winner of Australian Idol topped the charts in 2006 and has pretty much been popping up here and there ever since, but nothing on the scale of his best selling album of that year. 2007 1. Eyes Open – Snow Patrol 2. The Duchess – Fergie 3. Young Modern – Silverchair Fergie got together with Wil. I. Am to produce one of the top selling albums of the year keeping it at number one for four weeks. At least Snow Patrol and Silverchair kept the Aussies up there. 2008 1. Only By The Night – Kings of Leon 2. Funhouse – P!nk 3. Sleep Through The Static – Jack Johnson The year that started it all for Australia’s love affair with P!nk, who went to break all records with her ‘Funhouse’ tour on the back of the songs that kept her on top for 9 weeks, just outdone by Kings of Leon.

]

2009 1. I Dreamed A Dream – Susan Boyle 2. Essential – Michael Jackson 3. Crazy Love –Michael Buble Once described as looking like a woman who had ‘fallen backwards into a hedge’, Susan Boyle made a motza with her debut album in 2009. 2010 1. Recovery – Eminem 2. Greatest Hits So Far – P!nk 3. A Thousand Suns – Linkin Park There’s that rapping chap again…AND P!nk. Seems we just couldn’t get enough of them only 4 years ago. 2011 1. 21 – Adele 2. Christmas – Michael Buble 3. Someone To Watch Over Me – Susan Boyle We listened to Adele for most of the year, then got all warm’n’fuzzy at Christmas with Le Bube! Ahhhhh…. 2012 1. My Journey – Karise Eden 2. The Truth About Love – P!nk 3. Up All Night – One Direction I think the less said about this year the better…don’t you? *cough* 2013 1. To Be Loved – Michael Buble 2. Unorthodox Jukebox – Bruno Mars 3. Random Access Memories

– Daft Punk Michael Buble’s third appearance in the top 3. Can anything stop this man’s popularity? Probably not.

Rug up for ‘Jumpers & Jazz’ in Warwick – July 17–27 Warwick’s premier winter event that transforms the CBD streets into a living gallery, with more than 100 handmade art works installed on bare winter trees, is ready to fire up your imagination and charm your whole family. Jumpers & Jazz in July has over the past decade woven its way into the heart of locals and visitors who delight in a program of events that celebrate winter and the community’s love of art and music. The festival is also “country” at its core reflecting a relaxed lifestyle and open hospitality. Warwick Art Gallery Director Karina Devine is certain artists get more creative each year. “We expect the optional theme ZEN to be a challenge but anticipate that it will inspire our artists to create clever and beautiful entries,” Ms Devine said. This year the gallery and its volunteers will be yarn bombing not just a tree, but a whole kitchen. A festival must-see will be the ‘Knitchen’ exhibition, a full-scale yarn-bombed kitchen in the gallery foyer. “Our ‘knitchen’ will have everything including the kitchen sink, salt and pepper shakers, with a knitted roast chook on the menu from one of the more ambitious creative team members,” Ms Devine said. Visitors enjoy live jazz performances by some of South Queensland’s most popular jazz musicians to the backdrop of colourful knitted art or a warm winter fire. Returning in 2014 is the WellSwung Daddies, a bunch of gangsters and the Kings of Swing around the northern New South Wales area. This colourful 11 piece band plays a mix of arrangements from modern to past swing masters, with a dance-breakout almost guaranteed. Don’t miss the popular Suitcase Rummage, a mini-scaled and colourful market where stallholders sell from suitcases. Rummage, rifle and snap up suitcase bargains

ENTERTAINMENT Talking Beer WITH ANTHONY AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

Quiet Deeds Quiet deeds is a relatively little known brand in craft beer which hails from Melbourne. With a normal range consisting of a Pale Ale, a Kolcsh, and an IPA the brewery had a great footing to release a special batch of their ‘Vanilla Porter’. The Alehouse has been featuring the Kolsch for a while now and has decided to bring on both the IPA and the Vanilla porter. The IPA has a prominent and delicious hop aroma that you would expect from any good drinking India Pale Ale. However this beer is balanced by citrus and fruitier flavours this 5.5%abv beer is an easy option for the colder months that are sure to be endured at the Alehouse. The ‘Kolsch’ features a crisper flavour compared to a regular lager coupled with a subtle fruity aroma, and at 4.4%abv is an easily sessionable beer. The Vanilla porter, the newest addition to the quiet deeds line is sure to excite our dark beer drinkers, with its dark chocolate appearance and a hint of vanilla undertones through an otherwise standard porter this beer is perfect to warm you up through winter. Especially with its 6.2% alcohol by volume content, this beer is best served by the pint and drank slowly to bring out the full on flavours that it has to offer.

First ‘Growler’ jet enters production

[

]

Australia’s airborne electronic warfare capability is one step closer, with the first of twelve EA-18G ‘Growler’ aircraft entering production in the United States, with Northrop Grumman assembling the centre and rear sections of fuselage at its El Segundo plant in California, as the first stage of the production process.

On completion, Northrop Grumman will ship the sections to the Boeing plant in St Louis to enter final production. The first Australian ‘Growler’ is expected to roll off the production line in mid-2015, then undergo up to 12 months of flight testing with the US Navy. The first RAAF ‘Growler’ crews (pilot and electronic warfare officer) have begun training with the US Navy’s VAQ-129 unit at NAS Whidbey Island near Seattle, Washington in preparation for the first six aircraft to be ferried to RAAF Amberley early-2017. Operationally focused training will continue with US Navy

training units at NAS Oceana, Virginia from 2015. By 2016, six Australian crews will be trained on the ‘Growler’. The first EA-18G will carry serial number A46-301, and all 12 aircraft will be assigned to No 6 Squadron. The A46- designation was used during World War II by squadrons flying the CAC Boomerang, the first combat aircraft type to be designed and built in Australia and UH-1H ‘Iroquois’ helicopters of No 5 Squadron, which saw active service during the Malayan Emergency and later during the Vietnam War. The acquisition of the EA-18G will also

transform the air combat capability resident at RAAF Amberley. For many years, 1 Squadron has been assigned the ‘go to war’ role and 6 Squadron the conversion-to-type training role (with instructors at the squadron maintaining combat readiness). With the ‘Growler’, 6 Squadron will relinguish its F/A-18F Super Hornet training role to a training element of No 1 Squadron, and become an operational squadron in its own right. RAAF Amberley will then be home base to two fully operational squadrons flying Super Hornet variants. As was the case with the introduction of the F/A-18F Super Hornets, operational capability with the ‘Growlers’ will take years, with Initial Operational Capability expected mid-2018 but Full Operational Capability not expected until the early 2020s. The EA-18G capability is regarded as a ‘game changer’ for the Australian Defence Force, enabling the ADF to have on its Order of Battle a dedicated airborne electronics attack capability against high threat targets. Airlift squadron graduates first C-17 loadmasters

[

]

Crewmembers who manage cargo loads and passengers onboard the C-17A aircraft, the Loadmasters, now undergo training at their home squadron at RAAF Amberley – and the first two loadmasters have graduated.

Sergeants Jeffrey Calvert and Christian Allison were the first loadmasters to train on the C-17 Cargo Compartment Trainer (CCT) installed at No 36 Squadron late last year, before consolidating this ground-based training on the aircraft itself. For the past five years, training for loadmasters on the C-17 has been conducted in the United States. The establishment of training facilities at the air base, which include the CCT, makes Australia the only international C-17A operator capable of training its own C-17A pilots, loadmasters and aircraft technicians within the squadron. The CCT is proving to be of great cost benefit in training aircrews, technicians and mission specialists in the ground-based facility in preparation for the real thing, and it releases the fleet of six C-17As from some training

tasks, thereby increasing their availability for operational tasks. The CCT is a genuine reproduction of the C-17A’s cargo space, with a fully functional loading ramp, loadmaster’s station, and with fully functioning cargo systems replicating those on the actual aircraft. Much like the real aircraft, the CCT can accommodate payloads ranging from 18 pallets of cargo to helicopters, right up to an M1A1 Abrams tank. Importantly, the CCT also enables an increased level of training for specialised roles such as aeromedical evacuation and tactical scenarios without having to use an actual aircraft. In addition, an array of high-definition cameras record proceedings in the cargo bay, providing vision for post-activity debriefings. Defence Force camp delivers the “A-Ha!” factor A camp at RAAF Base Amberley for students recently has given many local girls a new outlook on the opportunities available to them in the Australian Defence Force. The four-day camp allowed the students to experience what life is like on an air base, and showed them how diverse and exciting a career could be for them, particularly as a pilot or as part of an air crew. Wing Commander Llani Kennealy said that the camp is part of the ongoing push to attract more women into the Defence Force. “The purpose of the camp is to encourage young women to consider the Air Force as a career and, more importantly, to consider the role of air crew,” WGCDR Kennealy said. “We find many girls think they simply couldn’t make it as a pilot. We like the idea of selecting girls to come to the camp for a week, to fly in the simulators, talk with crew and see for themselves that they can do it. Its like we are creating that ‘A-ha!’moment, in the sense that ‘A-ha..I can do that’. “There was an open invitation through the Education Department and the cadet network, but generally we aim for girls in the local region. We chose the top candidates from what they submitted, and checked that they are studying the right subjects that can aid them in the run to an Air Force career. “In the area of pilots or engineering, a non traditional role for women those numbers are a bit lower, and we know in the future we will need access to 100 per cent of the talent pool.” The students did things that will keep them talking for quite a while. “They stayed on base full time and it was a really great event. They did so many great things like flying in the Super Hornet and C-17 simulators, had a ride in the Air Force balloon, some physical training, leadership activities…the visit to the Working Military Dogs is always so popular! We had a trivia night and there was lots of time spent with current ADF members. “This is the second time we’ve run one at Amberley, the initial program was kicked off in September last year. We’re off to RAAF base Edinburgh (SA) in August then another camp at RAAF base Wagga (NSW).”

“From every camp we’ve run the response has been overwhelmingly positive, so we just wait now to see how many of those responses translates into a career choice, but overall it was nothing but a positive experience.” - Wing Commander Llani Kennealy

During the camp there was also a visit from Ms Julie McKay who was appointed in March this year by Chief of the Defence Force General David Hurley as Gender Advisor to the Chief of the Defence Force. “Julie McKay is the Gender Advisor to the CDF, and it was a good chance to talk to her about, and for her to see gender diversity in action,” WGCDR Kennealy said. “She’s fantastic, it was great to have her here. “Sadly we didn’t get to go up in a C-17 with the students it was cancelled at the last minute, which was a real shame, as that’s always a highlight. Most of the students said they enjoyed flying in the simulators the most, the PT and getting into the flying suits.” The camps could be a regular occurrence at RAAF Amberley judging by the response. Above: Gender Advisor to Chief of Defence Force, Julie Mckay hears some Flight Camp highlights from students Emma Tighe, Juliette Ashby and Takara Soki. safe government bond, and a high yield from a lowly-rated bond (once called Junk Bonds), with a range of corporate bonds in-between. Yield and growth: bonds earn income (coupons) and capital growth (if you sell the bond for more than its purchase price). The real premium in bonds is harvesting both the yield and growth, but very few retail investors have the expertise to do this. Experts: expert traders buy and sell bond positions in huge tranches and on a daily basis, in a market much larger than shares. You can buy bonds on the ASX, but unless you think you can beat the professional traders, you’ll access the bond markets through a fund. Funds: known as fixed-interest, fixed income or bond funds, these managed funds put together large collections of bonds and trade their holdings to generate best possible returns. Mandates: every bond fund states its mandate: for instance, ‘we only invest in Australian government bonds, and corporate bonds.’ Others will stipulate ‘no debentures, no hybrids etc.’ Other funds give ratios of government, corporate and bank bonds. It’s important to assess what kind of risk you want to take-on. I believe bonds are an important part of a portfolio because they fill a risk/return gap for liquid investments between deposits and shares. Financial advisers can help you find the profile that is right for you by using rating tools, but most bond funds are also highly transparent about their investment mandates, allowing some degree of self-education. When interest rates are as low as they are right now, two things happen: people borrow money to buy houses, because the interest payments are affordable; and those in or close to retirement look for greater yields than they can get in a bank account. For retirement savers there’s an interesting gap in the current market: you can put your money into term deposits, and earn 3 – 4 per cent in interest, with capital guaranteed. But to earn closer to 9 or 10 per cent on your savings, you have to invest in shares which always carries the risk of losing some of your capital. The trade-off position being used by many investors – which gives higher returns but without the risk or volatility of shares – is bonds. Bonds, unfortunately, have not traditionally been a retail investment in this country, so how do you access them? Here are some tips: Debt: when you buy a bond, you are lending to a government or a corporation that issues the bond. You are paid an interest rate to lend this money, which is called the ‘coupon’. Borrowers: their bonds, mostly, are listed on the ASX and are actively traded. Their bonds are for a fixed-term and they can either pay a variable (floating) or fixed rate. Risk: bonds are usually highly-ranked – if the borrower goes belly-up, the bond-holders are almost first in line to be paid out, higher than the equity holders. This is one reason they carry lower risk than equities. Returns: a bond’s yield is partially based upon the borrower and their credit rating. Ratings agencies such as S&P give the bond a rating, and the higher the rating, generally the lower the yield. You receive a low yield from a very

Demolishing the Ritz Theatre - 1966 The Ritz Theatre was situated in Bell Street, Ipswich in between the Ritz Cafe and Cribb and Foote’s (later Reid’s) Department Store. The first air-conditioned theatre in Ipswich, it housed an enormous air-conditioning plant run by Earle Pommer, a refrigeration engineer. The Ritz had a large candy store in the foyer and boasted a “crying room” for mothers with babies. The theatre opened in April 1940 and closed on April 26, 1966. The building was sold to Cribb and Foote in March 1966 and demolished later in the year. The building in the foreground is the station master’s house. Cinema was a major source of entertainment in the early part of the 20th Century and Ipswich had such theatres as the Wintergarden in East Street and the Majestic Theatre in Rosewood. Mercedes-Benz and the technology of light

Mercedes-Benz is using the new technology of Multibeam LED headlamps for the first time. High-resolution precision LED modules, each with 24 individually controlled highperformance LEDs, automatically illuminate the road with a hitherto unsurpassed, precision-controlled distribution of exceptionally bright light – without dazzling other road users. A camera positioned behind the windscreen delivers the information with which four control units the ideal light pattern 100 times per second. The anticipatory camerabased active light function on bends and the

new navigation-based light function for roundabouts are also unique. The MercedesBenz CLS-Class already became an icon of lighting technology back in 2010, incorporating dynamic all-LED high-performance headlamps featuring adaptive light functions as a world first in a production automobile. The headlamps now are able to react even more quickly, more precisely and individually to changing traffic conditions. On top of this, there are expanded functions of which a driver will become directly aware, such as anticipatory camera-based curve recognition with the active light function. A camera on the windscreen supplies the system with the information it needs about the constantly changing traffic situation and is also used by other assistance functions. Four control units per vehicle calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and activate all 24 high-performance LEDs in lamp module individually.

Winterize and have your car ready for the cooler months Here are a few things to check on this winter. Windscreen Wipers: Make sure your car’s windscreen wipers are in top working condition and washer fluid is topped up. Car batteries: Cold months are hard on car batteries. The colder temps mean that the car’s fluids are thicker, and hence the battery uses more power to heat everything up and get things moving. Sign up for roadside assistance: Nothing’s worse than breaking down in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a cold, stormy night. Headlights: Dark mornings and evenings are another dangerous hazard in winter, so even though it seems like an obvious one, make sure your headlights and tail lights are all working. In addition to making sure your car is in tip

top condition, take extra care to practice safe driving while out on the roads. Don’t drive too close to cars in front of you in dark, stormy or foggy weather), and make sure your tyres are fully inflated with plenty of grip left in the rubber. Of course, regular car maintenance is the key to ensuring your car is in perfect working condition year-round. Toyota reveals fuel-cell sedan

[

]

Toyota’s commitment to environment-friendly vehicles is based on three basic principles: embracing diverse energy sources; developing efficient, low-emission vehicles; and driving real and positive environmental change by popularising these vehicles.

Toyota Motor Corporation today revealed the exterior design and Japan pricing of its hydrogen fuel-cell sedan. First unveiled as a concept at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, the car will launch in Japan before April next year, and preparations are underway for launches in the US and Europe during their summer of 2015. In Japan, the fuel-cell sedan will go on sale at Toyota and Toyopet dealerships, priced at approximately 7 million yen (approximately A$73,300 - recommended retail price excluding consumption tax). Initially, sales will be limited to regions1 where hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is being developed. Europe and US prices have not yet been decided. More detailed information, such as specifications, exact prices and sales targets, will be announced later. Toyota’s commitment to environmentfriendly vehicles is based on three basic principles: embracing diverse energy sources; developing efficient, low-emission vehicles; and driving real and positive environmental change by popularising these vehicles. Hydrogen is a particularly promising alternative fuel. It can be produced from a wide variety of primary energy sources including solar power and wind power - and is easy to store and transport. When compressed, it has a higher energy density than batteries. In addition to its potential as a fuel for home and automotive use, hydrogen could be used in a wide range of applications, including large-scale power generation. Toyota has been developing fuel cell vehicles in-house for more than 20 years. Toyota’s fuel-cell system includes a proprietary Fuel Cell Stack, which generates electricity from the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, and high-

pressure hydrogen tanks. In 2002, Toyota began leasing the “Toyota FCHV”, a fuel-cell SUV, on a limited basis in Japan and the US. Significant improvements have been made to the fuel-cell system since 2002. The fuel-cell sedan Toyota revealed today, for example, features performance and a cruising range similar to a petrol-engine vehicle and a refuelling time of roughly three minutes. When driven, it emits only the water vapour produced by the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Fuel-cell vehicles contribute to the diversification of automobile fuels, emit no CO2 or environmentally harmful substances during operation, and offer the convenience of petrol-powered cars. Toyota believes they have a great deal of potential, and are ideal environment-friendly vehicles for promoting a sustainable mobility society. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the arrival of fuel-cell technology for cars is an exciting development. “Toyota’s history with hybrid vehicles provides the experience needed to launch a new technology to the market in countries where the fuelling infrastructure is available,” Mr Cramb said. “In Australia, there are many challenges ahead, including development of the required infrastructure and greater customer awareness, before hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles can be offered here. “But Toyota is confident that hydrogen will become increasingly popular as a way of powering vehicles around the world.” Toyota Group2 companies are also engaged in other hydrogen-related initiatives, such as developing and testing fuel cells for use in homes, and developing fuel-cell forklifts and fuel-cell buses.
