Tiffany Hall has just released her final book in the ‘White Ninja’ trilogy, moved to Brisbane, and is planning her wedding to one of the funniest men on air. Things are looking good for author, TaeKewonDo black belt and personal trainer Tiffiny Hall.

5 24 17

When Tiffiny last graced the pages of Ipswich Life, it was her new life as a children’s author that was the focus of her energy, with the release of her first book for kids, ‘White Ninja’. A sequel followed, and now the final book in the trilogy is on sale. For the former star of TV’s ‘The Biggest Loser’, it’s the end of a part of her life that she admits she’s been married to. Now, she has moved to Brisbane with her fiancé Ed Kavalee (from Triple M). “It’s been so exciting moving here from Melbourne, I’m loving it,” Tiffiny said. “There’s so many cool cafes where we live, and I’m just happy being part of South East Queensland. “I was ready for a change to be honest. I’ve lived all over the place. I moved to Sydney on a whim for ‘The Biggest Loser’, and then I lived in Los Angeles for a while, but when my fiancé got this great opportunity to move to Brisbane, we were ready for it. Now I’m a full time writer I just need a laptop to work.”

The author has been busy of late, with an appearance on Seven’s ‘Slideshow’, plus being the subject of conversation on Triple M each morning, something she takes with a grain of salt. “I’ve been with Ed for eight years now and for most of that time he’s been on breakfast radio. When we first got together he told me that there was a thing called ‘The Magic of Radio’, where he will engineer a story for telling on air. I realise my life is good radio ‘fodder’, but I do prefer it when I’m there to defend myself. I accept that, but sometimes if the phone rings early in the morning I think ‘Oh no, here we go again’, but that’s ok, it’s what he does. “Going on Slideshow was so much fun, but I was thrown into the deep end. I’ve never acted in my life, and there was so much improvisation. I’m a fitness trainer…I was so out of my depth. That tilting stage is so steep when it tilts. It was quite dangerous

and when we spilt champagne everywhere we had to reshoot it, as it was just too hard to stay upright, but honestly it was a ton of fun!” With her new book, ‘Black Warrior’ on the shelves now, Tiffiny says that the response to the books from readers has been overwhelming, especially with its message about bullying. “I am a bit sad that it’s all over. I’ve spent years of my life having all these characters in my head and the messages they send. I feel like I’m ready to move onto other projects, nothing to do with martial arts, which is still such a big part of my life. “I always saw this as a series. The contract was for a trilogy from the start. The final book is about Roxy Ran finding her father, and I’ve been to so many schools doing confidence workshops, writing workshops and such, but I know the books will live on with readers. “This series has run through my blood for the last few years, I’ve been married to them. I have a few more projects on the go that I can’t talk about until it’s all sorted out, but one of things I want to do is get kids reading books and off their ipads. So yes, I would love to stay in this genre and hopefully early next year I will be making a few announcements. “I’ve met so many kids that have related to the books on my travels to schools. I’ve received letters from kids, and when they write and say that they were inspired by the books to deal with bullying...its so nice. I’ve also met many bullies, you see them straight away and I’ve worked with them to be inspiring, and learn to be a leader.

“I never get enough time to do my training, I could do it all day. I love moving and being active all day. Most of my training is before breakfast, there is nothing to interrupt you at that time of day, unless you have kids, which one day I hope to do! So that’s my time to train, and I hope in the future to do projects to get kids moving. I’ve seen kids in prams with iPads, things like that get to me. My brother is sixteen and addicted to video games, I just tell him to get off the couch and do some training.” Black Warrior, the final part in the Roxy Ran trilogy, is out now.

Springfield region and trade area.” Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale said the beginning of construction of the next stage of Orion marked a significant milestone not only for the Springfield development, but for the whole of Ipswich. “The recent announcement of a Southbankstyle lagoon pool in nearby Robelle Domain further enhances the reputation of Ipswich as a place to live, work and play,” he said. “Robelle Domain is a parkland of regional significance enjoyed by thousands of people every week. When completed, the next stage of Orion will boost the number of daily visitors to the centre and make Springfield Central a destination in its own right.” The Centre’s expansion will include approximately 80 new specialty stores including additional fashion, cafes and restaurants, as well as community services and conveniences. An additional 1200 car parks will be provided. The development is expected to create approximately 440 construction related jobs and more than 700 retail jobs on completion.

The ceremony was officiated by Mirvac’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz with Ipswich Mayor, Councillor Paul Pisasale. This next stage will bring a new Event Cinemas, Target and Coles to the Centre, along with approximately 80 additional retailers, including fashion, cafes and restaurants and a new family focused tavern to the area. In addition, the Centre’s public areas will be enhanced with new landscaping, water features, art installations and improved pedestrian links to Robelle Domain, the train station and the University. Works are targeted to be completed by December 2015. Mirvac’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz said: “We are delighted to formally commemorate the start of construction of the next stage of expansion of Orion Springfield Central. Festival Parade The parade on 3 May is the heart and soul of the Ipswich Festival. Bringing, kids, community groups and passionate locals out to celebrate. This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating our Great Aussie Icons,’ so imagine Don Bradman, Kylie, Crocodile Dundee and vegemite and you’ll get a sense of how bright and colourful the day will be. Fire on the River A sky ablaze with colour signals the launch of the Ipswich Festival. Fire on the River is an exhilarating fireworks display set to a dedicated music program that is worth bringing the whole family out for. Best seen from Riverlink or the David Trumpy Bridge, this alcohol free event on 24 April will absolutely blow you away. Creative Kidz Big Day Out On 27 April Bob Gamble Park will be transformed into a wonderland where kids can explore their creativity, discover the wonders of science and get involved in some fun physical activities. Throughout the entire day kids can get their hands stuck into some craft like jewellery making and tie dying, get stuck into a four way tug of war or join Science Steve to explore the explosive power of nature. Festival Street Party Immediately following the parade the Festival kicks it up a notch with a street party that will bring three live stages to the crowds featuring some of our best home grown and local talent. The Main Stage, Local Indy Stage and Carnaby Square Stage will feature acts that will appeal to anyone. Enjoy some food, enjoy some live music and enjoy the party! Global Community Robelle Domain will come alive with colour, food, dance and entertainment on May 10 at the Global Fiesta. A local of over thirty years, Jen Howard wil be running under the Labor ticket in the state election next year, against Ian Berry. Jen Howard has a long history in politics, and began working for David Hamill back in the mid nineties. Currently working with Federal MP Shayne Neumann, the mother of two is set to work full time on her campaign to get into State Parliament and represent Ipswich. Ipswich Life sat down with the woman hoping to be our voice in Parliament and discussed her credentials over a cuppa. “It was the right time for me to stand for election,” Jen said. “I’ve lived in such a way where I give my all to what I’m doing at the time. Raising two children and losing my mother in recent years put politics back as a priority. “I’d been approached a couple of times but the time wasn’t right. But now my son and daughter are adults, the timing just seemed right. “I understand exactly what politicians go through, I have no illusions about that. Criticism of politicians is not uncommon, but it’s the achievements that politicians can make that inspires me. Julia Gillard was criticised a lot, but she did achieve a lot of things in her time, it made me realise a lot can be done. “Plus women I think have a natural ability when it comes to politics, including the ability to negotiate, collaborate, and plan for the future. We have a lot of offer.” Jen has been in and around politics since 1995 and is well known in political circles around the area. “I started working for David Hamill in 1995, it was initially a five week gig and I had no political experience at all, but I really took to it. He was Minister for Education at the time, and they asked me to stay on after the initial five weeks. The next year we lost government and I returned to my Vet Nursing career, and then in 2001 I started working for Rachel Nolan, the former Queensland Transport Minister.” Should she get in, Jen has plans for Ipswich and getting money from the State’s coffers are high on the priority list to support the huge growth that Ipswich is going through. “We’ve seen so many jobs lost in recent years, and it’s essential we get the unemployment rate down. As for Ipswich, it is the fastest growing city in Queensland and the focus has

to be on jobs, health and infrastructure. “Over 45,000 cars go over the David Trumpy Bridge every day, and we need another bridge. The Norman Street Bridge would relieve congestion and provide an alternative route. I see the congestion regularly, and with our population set to explode there needs to be money for this growth. “Job creation in this area has to be the other priority. The ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ program was one of the first things that Campbell Newman cut which got disadvantaged people ready for work, and we need to get that up and going again. “ Jen sees the future for the Labor party as an exciting time, and is ready to listen to what people think in the run up to the 2015 election. “I think it’s an exciting time to be in the Labor party. We have 54 candidates pre selected, there is movement for growth and some great candidates. This is the time that growth will happen. The party has listened to Queenslanders and I do believe they are moving in a direction of listening, that has to be the focus.” Below: Jen Howard will put her heart and soul into becoming the next State Member for Ipswich.

OUT AND ABOUT IN

SeniorNet workshop Famous feminist, Betty Friedan once said that “Ageing is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength.” In my capacity as the Shadow Minister for Ageing, and prior to that Parliamentary Secretary for Ageing, I’ve met some truly inspirational older people who follow this philosophy. These are people who have looked at ageing and who have successfully redefined later life as a time of growth instead of inevitable decline. The 2013–14 Budget saw Labor deliver the Keeping Seniors Connected program for new technology and training grants for Broadband for Seniors kiosks. There are about 2,000 of these kiosks, one of which is our very own SeniorNet, hosted by University of Queensland Ipswich Campus, and a shining example of how successful these kiosks are. I acknowledge the work of SeniorNet coordinator, Colleen Freeman who does a terrific job of ensuring the people who come along to develop computer skills are supported and assisted at their own pace in a friendly and welcoming environment. Last week I attended a workshop run by SeniorNet in line with its focus this year on cyber security and identity fraud. Cyber security and identity fraud is costly Australia. Many victims of internet fraud don’t report their experiences due to a sense of embarrassment or shame at being ‘duped’. But these scammers use a very wide range of deceptive methods to find their victims. And they are quite often successful, judging by the $1bn annual cost to Australians. I commend SeniorNet and Community Police Officer, Nadine Webster for presenting such an informative and enjoyable workshop on cyber security and identity fraud. Warm regards, Shayne Neumann Member for Blair

At Westside Christian College.. Achievement, Belonging & Care Count

Learning normally begins with ABC, and at Westside Christian College, teaching staff take the basics of education seriously, because it’s more than learning, it’s Achievement, Belonging and Care. Achievement is one aspect of school life that Westside takes very seriously, and the results are clear evidence of this commitment. “As a school, we offer education that is tailored to each individual student. We regularly achieve scores above the Queensland state average in the NAPLAN tests,” Principal Christopher Meadows states. “In 2013, 95% of our graduating Year 12 students received a Tertiary offer – this is not unusual. It is a fantastic result and shows the effort that our students put into their work.” Academic achievement is not the only focus – achievement in co-curricular areas such as Music, Drama and Dance are also important. Primary students regular participate in the Ipswich Dance Eisteddfod; 2013 was the tenth time the College has been awarded First place. “It’s this type of achievement, both in and out of the class, which helps to create a

well-rounded student,” Christopher Meadows states. “All achievement is valued; academic, cultural, sporting. Staff encouraging students to do their best in all they do is the key.” Westside students know who they are – they know where they Belong. They know they are loved, nurtured and cared for. Mr Meadows explains, “As a Prep to Year 12 school, our staff and students are able to build lasting relationships – our staff care for the students and the students know who they can trust.” Part of this trust is in the teacher-delivery of the Bounce Back program – a resilience program for Primary students. ‘Teaching resilience is a priority for us,’ comments Mr Meadows. “Our children know that life is full of ups and downs and the Bounce Back Program helps them to develop strategies to deal with everything life throws at them.” Care is another element that the Westside

Primary students visit nursing homes to sing, perform and talk with the residents there. “Teaching students to get outside themselves and to serve and care for others is a priority for us,” says Mr Meadows. “All our students learn to serve and to care.” Both Primary and Secondary students contribute to the Samaritan’s Purse program, compiling Christmas shoe-boxes for the charity. Secondary students participate in the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life, World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine and Destiny Rescue’s Make a Stand campaign. Secondary students are involved in a number of programs such as the College’s Two Can Drive – where students are

encouraged to donate two cans of food, which is then distributed to various local charities. Students and staff are also involved in the Helping Hands program – a weekly outreach to the homeless of Ipswich. Students use their Tuesday lunchtimes to make sandwiches and pack eskies, ready for the run. Senior students then travel with the van on Tuesday evenings into Ipswich and distribute the food to those who have nothing. “It is a wonderfully, humbling experience for our students,” Mr Meadows explains. “It has a profound effect on them, particularly when they see their peers without the phones, the electronics and the trapping of wealth that they have…it makes them realise how blessed they are. It makes them realise how blessed they are to have somewhere to sleep, someone to care for them; especially when they meet people who do not have that assurance.” Westside Christian College not only cares for the pastoral side of their students, but all aspects of their development. The College runs Camp, Drama, Music and Cultural programs along side the high educational programs in both the Primary and the Secondary schools, all of which focus on building the whole child.

Open Night 2014 If Westside Christian College sounds like the school for your son or daughter in 2015 and beyond, you are welcome to attend the official Westside Christian College Open Night on Friday 2nd May 2014, where both the Secondary and new Primary campuses will be open and on display for prospective parents and students, to see for themselves

how the College operates. Visitors will be able to talk with staff and students in a relaxed and informative environment, visit classrooms, involve themselves in the activities on offer and see what the College has to offer, including the bus fleet, which transports students from areas as far as Moggill, Kenmore, Browns Plains, Karalee and Karana Downs as well as servicing the Ipswich area and beyond.

For those unable to make the Open Night, information and tours are available throughout the year. Please contact the College Admissions Office for more details. For more information on the benefits of a Westside Christian College education, please contact the College between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday on (07) 3437 9000.

Executive Chairman of Ipswich Events Corporation Paul Casos said the fireworks spectacular Fire on the River will mark the start of Ipswich Festival 2014, when the skies light up in an explosion of colour! “There is a full and exciting week ahead of Ipswich Festival events with Fire on the River fireworks display, Creative Kidz Big Day Out and of course the official floating of Adrift.” “Fire on the River is an enthralling display of fireworks all synchronised to music that adults and children will not want to miss! “The best vantage points to view the show are Riverlink Shopping Centre and David Trumpy Bridge – get down here on Thursday, 24 April and set up your spot! “The unique Adrift will also be afloat and wowing children and adults alike from Thursday 24th April.” “Adrift is a celebration of the Bremer River, a floating, sustainable light installation which will be totally untouched for the three weeks of Ipswich Festival, turning itself on and off nightly,” Mr Casos said. On Sunday 27 April a kids-only celebration, Creative Kidz Big Day Out will round off the first week of Ipswich Festival 2014 activities.

“Kids will be spoilt for choice as they navigate through fun, dynamic and interactive workshops - jewellery making, fibre workshop, pinwheel making, super shakers and much more.”

‘Lazy’ author to launch book in Ipswich Aussie weight-loss myth buster Marie Bean will launch her new book Lazy Loser at the Ipswich Library this week. Ipswich residents will have the chance to meet author Marie Bean from 10am on April 23 at the Barry Jones Auditorium, Ipswich Library Building when she launches her new book. Ms Bean’s book encourages readers to slim down by avoiding dieting and to get fit the lazy way. Packed with humour and insider tips based on years of experience, Lazy Loser explodes the many assumptions shrouding the food, dieting, fitness and weight loss world. Ms Bean is a health and fitness consultant who loves nothing more than to bust myths about the industry she is so passionate about. Her first book, Lazy Runner, drew on her 25 years’ experience as an injury-free marathon runner. She is also a running coach and founder of the successful ‘Lazy Runner’ clubs across Australia. Ms Bean has recently finished a six-month tour of Australia and the UK, where she promoted Lazy Runner by conducting workshops and book talks. The book was well received and the workshops were sell-outs. Lazy Loser examines the message that diets are only successful when people are on them. Ms Bean said once people are off them they put the weight straight back on, so it stands to reason that weight gain is caused by factors during the non-dieting phase of a person’s life. Ms Bean said thanks to Australia’s trend towards a ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ and ‘upsizing’

food culture, people were gradually putting on more weight. At the same time, they were being bamboozled by the mass of information from the food and nutrition industry. She said people needed only to make minor lifestyle tweaks to get radically positive results. “Being a lazy loser is about a person getting a handle on their one or two weaknesses that were causing their weight problems.” The book encourages readers to find out what their temptation category is and then helps with tips and advice on how to break or curb their eating and drinking weaknesses. Book sales and signings will be available at this FREE event. For more information contact Ipswich Central Library on 3810 6815.

City intersection to be upgraded Safety works worth $840,000 have begun on the Brisbane and Milford Street intersection in Ipswich. Member for Ipswich Ian Berry said these works are funded under the ‘Safer Roads Sooner’ project which allocates funding to address black spots on Queensland’s road network. “With a history of crashes at this busy intersection, these works will boost safety for nearby residents, school children, pedestrians and motorists,” Mr Berry said. “These projects align with our election promise to deliver better infrastructure and better planning and provide cost-effective solutions to make our roads safer. “New left-in, left-out arrangements for Milford Street traffic will mean a safer intersection for the more than 12,000 drivers who travel through this

ANZAC Day service list Ipswich children are welcome to take part in this year’s City of Ipswich ANZAC Day marches wearing their parents or grandparents’ medals. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the main Ipswich march on April 25 would step off at 10.15am from the corner of Limestone and Ellenborough streets in the Central Business District before making its way to the North Ipswich Reserve for a public commemoration service from 11am. Wing Commander Tony Houghton Commanding Officer from RAAF Security and Fire School will address the crowd at the main Ipswich service. While many marches and services are held around Ipswich on April 25 and in the lead-up to the day, this is the official City of Ipswich event, organised by Ipswich City Council in partnership with the Ipswich RSL Sub-Branch. Cr Pisasale said the march would travel down Brisbane St, East St, Pine St and The Terrace. The David Trumpy Bridge would be temporarily closed by Queensland Police from 10am to allow the parade to move through the area. More detailed information on road closures in connection with ANZAC Day will be available from April 16 on council’s main website at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au Anyone interested in participating in the march should contact parade marshal Paul Ninnes at the Ipswich RSL Sub-Branch on 3281 4159 on weekdays before 1pm or by phoning 0418 742 895. This year, a second form-up point will be available at the Friendly Care Pharmacy in East St for veterans to join the march at that point reducing the parade length for them to 750 metres from there to North Ipswich Reserve. Veterans who are incapacitated and need to travel in a vehicle for the parade are asked to contact Ipswich RSL Sub-Branch on 3281 4159. Cr Pisasale said council was pleased to once again join with the Ipswich RSL Sub-branch to honour those who gave their lives to protect our country and those servicemen and women who were currently serving around the world. “It is important that we remember and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom as a country,” Cr Pisasale said. “With Air Force and Army personnel posted at Amberley, it is especially vital that we acknowledge our defence personnel’s ongoing efforts. “About 500 representatives from the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force based at Amberley RAAF Base, including officers from 9FSB and the RAAF Security and Fire School, will march in the parade.” Cr Pisasale said with the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings in Gallipoli to be commemorated next year, council wanted to rally the community to embrace the ANZAC spirit and show their support for all veterans. “We especially want to encourage the next generation to take part and will gladly welcome Ipswich children to wear their parents’ or grandparents’ medals and march in the parade.” The main march for Ipswich will be supported by a number of services in the suburbs including: AMBERLEY — Service at 5.30am at the Base Memorial Gardens, front gate, RAAF Base, Amberley. 12 IPSWICHLIFE

Movie Mania in April and May With the run starting now into the US summer season, its one of the best times of the year for movies, so here’s a quick guide to the blockbusters coming in the next few weeks so you can plan ahead!

Godzilla

Out: May 15 Finally, we all have the chance to forget that ghastly Matthew Broderick mess of a movie from the 1990’s as Godzilla gets the remake treatment and director Gareth Evans promises to treat the lizard with the respect he/she deserves and the trailers are mind-blowing. With Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston in the lead role, this looks like the Godzilla we’ve all been waiting for. Hopefully this time they won’t kill the monster! *shakes fist* SEE IF YOU LOVED: Cloverfield, Pacific Rim AVOID IF YOU: Don’t like lizards

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Out: NOW Andrew Garfield returns as Peter Parker, taking on Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti as The Rhino, while also finding out the truth about Oscorp, the company that his father worked for. Also stars Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn/The Green Goblin. SEE IF YOU LOVED: Captain America, The Avengers AVOID IF YOU: Are over superhero movies

Transcendence

Out: April 24 Now this one looks interesting. Johnny Depp stars in this science fiction story about a terminally ill scientist who uploads his mind to a computer. This grants him power beyond his wildest dreams, and soon he becomes unstoppable. Also stars Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany and Rebecca Hall. SEE IF YOU LOVED: Minority Report, Contact AVOID IF YOU: Think Johnny Depp is rubbish

Bad Neighbours

Out: May 8 A couple with a newborn baby face unexpected difficulties after they are forced to live next to a fraternity house. Rated R in the USA, this one might be off limits to most teenagers who would enjoy seeing Seth Rogan in his latest comedy role. This looks like a lot of fun, even though Frat Parties are a mainly American tradition, but we can all relate to noisy neighbours… can’t we? SEE IF YOU LOVED: Superbad, National Lampoons Animal House AVOID IF YOU: Are easily offended

Chef

Out: May 8 Written, starring and directed by Iron Man’s Jon Favreau, this has a great cast including Scarlett Johanssen, Dustin Hoffman and Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara (hubba hubba) and Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr. It’s the quirky and funny tale of a chef who loses his restaurant job and starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family. SEE IF YOU LOVED: Little Miss Sunshine, Julie & Julia AVOID IF YOU: Are hungry when you go into the cinema

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Out: May 22 The sequel to the 2011 hit ‘X-Men: First Class’ and the seventh film with an X-Men theme… all of which have featured our Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (settle down ladies), this one sees Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Game of Throne’s Peter Dinklage on screen, and with original X-Men director Bryan Singer at the helm, this should be heaven for fans. SEE IF YOU LOVED: Any of the X-Men movies AVOID IF YOU: Are sick of Hugh Jackman getting his shirt off ... come on girls look at him (above) . You MUST be sick of seeing this by now?

A Million Ways to Die in the West

OUT: May 29 Written by, starring, and directed by Seth McFarland — the man who brought you Family Guy and the hilarious ‘Ted’, this is the story of a cowardly farmer who begins to fall for the mysterious new woman in town. He must put his new-found courage to the test when her husband, a notorious gun-slinger, announces his arrival. Features an all star cast with the likes of Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried and Charleze Theron. SEE IF YOU LOVED: Ted, Blazing Saddles AVOID IF YOU: Don’t find cowboy jokes funny WANT TO WIN A DOUBLE MOVIE PASS? Changing of the guard at Ian Boettcher Motors After almost 45 years of selling cars from his Ipswich Dealership, Ian Boettcher has decided to accept an offer to sell his business to the AP Eagers Goup, effective from1st July this year. While the business has been sold, the Boettcher Family still owns the property, with the new owners becoming their tenants. The business will maintain the Ian Boettcher name, as well as the majority of the current staff members. It has certainly been a time of reflection for Ian Boettcher who has been part of the Ipswich business community for such a long time. “I knew this day would happen, so I’ve been preparing myself for a while,” Mr Boettcher said. “Overall I’m feeling pretty neutral about it all. I am ready to take a step back and slow down. “I am appreciative of the support the Ipswich people have given me. We’ve been the longest serving Dealership in Ipswich region, and we would not have achieved the success we have

without the support of the greater South East Queeensland community.” Mr Boettcher, along with son Greg, will continue in a consultancy type role with the new owners, after the sale takes effect. For new car buyers the sale means that there will be some bargains on offer as the dealership reduces its stock of vehicles. From now until the official AP Eagers takeover on July 1, Ian Boettcher Motors will be clearing up to 300 2013-plated new cars. “There will be lots of bargains to be had before 30th June, and you won’t find these cars anywhere else, at these prices,” Mr Boettcher said. “I never thought I would be saying this, but please take advantage of this once in my lifetime offer.”

Claver - Great teaching makes the difference Just ask any of our students

At St Peter Claver College we believe that great teaching makes all the difference for our students. Teachers who are passionate, organised, relational and knowledgeable have a greater capacity to make a positive impact on the lives of our young people. That’s why we strive to build and nurture a culture where our teachers can be exactly that. Our best judges in letting us know how we’re going are our students. So come along to our Open Day on Sunday May 4th from 9.30am – 1.30pm and ask our students what they think? And while you are here have a look around to see what we can offer your child. Over the past few years we have been building and upgrading our grounds and facilities. Our most recent projects include a Trade Training Centre and a Visual Arts Centre. We are also about to build a Middle Years Learning Centre in readiness for 2015. All up in excess of $30m has been spent in recent years, which has literally transformed our College. And what has this meant for our students?

In a word – success. We want our students to experience success as an outcome of effort and trying something new. In this way they can grow and mature into responsible young adults ready to make their mark in the world. That’s why we offer a diverse curriculum where students have choice and where they feel that they belong and are part of a community. It is also why we provide opportunities for students to excel in the broader curriculum through the creative arts, sport, student leadership roles, academic interest groups and community programs. There is something for everyone at Claver. At Claver we also believe in educating the heart before training the mind. Our social outreach programs are well known in

our community. We also embrace cultural diversity and difference as a cornerstone to building a stronger society. Central to our ethos is our Catholic heritage and the inspiration we find in the faith witness of people like St Peter Claver. It is for this reason that we have a strong connection and with our Indigenous brothers and sisters. We are a Catholic coeducational college situated at the intersection of the Cunningham Highway, Ipswich Motorway and Warrego Highway. Close to the railway and offering a sponsored bus service we are conveniently located and set amongst a beautiful natural bush setting. The College welcomes enrolment enquiries for 2015 and onwards.

Lost Ipswich finds local fans

A Facebook page that started as a hobby has snowballed into one of the most popular pages on the social networking site that locals are getting right behind. The brainchild of well known Ipswich Jets staff member Greg ‘Jacko’ Lyons, the site is dedicated to stories and photos of things that have been ‘lost’ in Ipswich, and some of the contributions coming through have been amazing. “It started when I found a site called ‘Lost Brisbane’ and I saw a picture of tram in Paddington,” Greg said. “It really hit home to memories of getting trams as a kid. I thought it would be good to have a site dedicated to old photos of Ipswich. “The Facebook page travelled along for a while, and twelve months ago we had under 1200 members. Lately the site has just grown to more than 3,600 members!” The site is all about sharing stories and photos of things that have been lost over the years. “We want people to go through their old photos and dig them out, talk to your older relatives and find out what Ipswich was like in the past. It’s amazing what stories are out there about Ipswich. Talk with relatives about their memories. “We had a series of photos come through by a man who stood on top of the health plaza and did several shots of Ipswich up there when he was installing an air conditioner in the early 1970’s. He’s keen to get back up there and do a comparison shot which will be great. It’s a great photo from back then, there were no high rises and it looks so different” Greg said. “It’s also a great page to get people together. I have a friend who lives up the coast and I was telling him about it. He had a look and he curses me now because he was up to midnight every night, and amazingly, in his first visit alone, he found eight people on there that he’d lost contact with from Ipswich. “We don’t care who is blame for things being gone, or why…it’s just there to remember things. We encourage people to share stories, their memories and such. People love the

memories, we have so many good storytellers on the site, some of them tell a story and it feels like you were there. Many stories jog people’s memories, and they share those and it just snowballs from there.” Greg has a lot of favourite images on the site, and some in particular can be compared to the area of today. “My favourite photos are of Brisbane Road, especially the area around where Sizzler is now. There is a series of four photos showing an old concrete road with not much traffic on it and its amazing to see. “Some of the houses in the photo are still standing. One of those shots is the South Station Road intersection where Booval Fair and KFC is now. It was taken in the early forties I think, and shots like that really make you see things in a new light..” Greg also has plans to run some historic tours, morning teas and social events as the site grows in popularity. To see more photos and join in the conversation, go on Facebook and search for ‘Lost Ipswich’, or find the link on the Ipswich Life Facebook page. Lollies aplenty at Sweetmans! Ipswich now has the ultimate destination for those with a sweet tooth, with the ‘Sweetmans Lolly Shop’ is now open for business, bringing a massive range of treats and snacks to Ipswich. Sweetmans Lolly Shop is the brainchild of the Raniga family, which started its confectionary and snack food business in Carole Park over a decade ago, and has now opened in Augustine Heights, just up the road from Orion Springfield. The Raniga family lives in Brookwater, and they loved the place so much they bought land and built their facility in their local area. Under the name of ‘SRS’, they import products from all over the world, and export to New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, and as far as Singapore and the USA. “We are proud to open our business in the local area where we live. 16 IPSWICHLIFE

“We have a huge variety of snacks and lollies here to satisfy everyone in Ipswich and surrounding areas,” Managing Director Nay Raniga said. The shop also carries a range of ice cream, Veggie chips, flavoured popcorn, and a huge range of kid’s lollies like Zombie Chews and Wicked Fizz. They also carry a range of GlutenFree and healthy snacks with natural colouring. Sweetmans Lolly Shop is open Monday to Friday from 10am-5pm, and Saturdays from 10.30am-4pm. The shop is in Technology Drive in Augustine Heights, off Augusta Parkway. From Ipswich, take the exit to ‘Springfield Central’ and turn left at the traffic lights.

Ipswich stars in ‘Parer’s War’ A telemovie that set Ipswich abuzz last year is set to screen on ABC1 on April 27, and will have Ipswich residents playing ‘spot the location’ all the way through! ‘Parer’s War’ stars Matthew Le Nevez (his first role since his departure from ‘Offspring’ had everyone talking in 2013), as Damien Parer, who was a cameraman during World War II who brought the war home to Australians at a time when footage was at a premium. It is also a story about a man trying to reveal the savage truth of war, and a love story, as it depicts the romance between Damien and the woman who became his wife, Marie Cotter. Some of the places you might recognise in the movie are: *The Ipswich Art Gallery in Brisbane Street (next to Mehfil) as a movie theatre *Top of Town in the Ipswich CBD *The old TAFE building on the corner of Ellenborough and Limestone Streets features as a block of units, and several interior shots. Filmed in Ipswich and on the Gold Coast at the Oxenford Studios, producer Andrew Wiseman said that choosing Ipswich as a location turned out to be a masterstroke as a replacement for 1940’s Sydney. “When we were looking for another history based project to work on we were fascinated with Damien Parer’s story,” Producer Andrew Wiseman said. “We thought it was an interesting combination of a war story and a romance. “Right from the outset we had no particular actor in mind but we spoke to Matthew Le Nevez about the role and when we told him he had it, the first thing he did was walk the Kokoda track. It was wonderful to see such commitment from someone, and he was great during filming, always on set and so supportive of the production. “It was terrific filming in Ipswich it worked really well for us. We were looking for locations that could replicate Sydney in the early 1940’s and its really quite difficult in Queensland as a lot of the architecture is quite modern, but our location manager suggested Ipswich and after a visit realised it would fit the bill. We used the church, the ‘Top of Town’ and other locations. All the business owners and council were very supportive.” Making a movie set in the past means that the crew have to be meticulous when it comes to making sure there are not mobile

phone antennas, posters or signage in the background, something that must make people like Andrew paranoid. “Certainly when you’re doing a period piece you want to get the look right, and our crew go to extraordinary lengths to do that. We were lucky to have the biography of Damien to work from, and all the heads of department did a huge amount of research well in advance, but we think we portrayed the period as realistically as we could. The jungle scenes were done in the Gold Coast Hinterland, and we used a whole range of locations in South East Queensland to be honest, including Mount Tambourine and of course, Ipswich. “ So after working on this movie, does Andrew have a theory as to what drove men like Damien Parer to get into the middle of a war zone with nothing more than a camera? “I do think to some extent they use the camera as a shield to allow themselves to go into harms way and use their craft in a way others may not be able to. There is a risk taking element being a war cameraman, and they also have to be non-judgmental to capture the images they want. Ultimately I think they are trying to capture an event as cleanly and honestly as they can in areas of conflict for the benefit of us back home, it gives people a window into a war zone. “Damien Parer’s son is a respected film producer, and he was aware of the project from the start. He saw the final film and sent us a very warm email, which was really nice. It was with some trepidation that we made a film that we always hoped would be respectful and honest. “Its always a big time for Australian movies, around Anzac Day, and the ABC has been a terrific supporter of this project from the start. It’s a great vote of confidence having it screen on the Anzac Day long weekend. I hope that people tune in and have a fascinating and emotional ride as a piece of drama that I think is a really compelling combination of a love story and a war story. “I’d love to do more stuff in Queensland, and hopefully film again in Ipswich, it was great!” Parer’s War, starring Matthew Le Nevez and Ipswich, screens on ABC1 on Sunday April 27.

Brothers Leagues Club is famous for putting on great entertainment and there some exciting acts coming up over the next month. Two feature shows are particularly exciting. On Thursday May 15, the world’s “tuffest” comedian, George Smilovici is performing for one night only. George is an internationally renowned and loved stand up comedy legend who has performed in every arena possible. If you are a similar vintage to me, you will remember his smash hit monologue “I’m Tuff” which was both a seminal influence on Australian comedy and which knocked Stevie Wonder off top spot in the international charts. More recently you might have caught him appearing on shows such as ‘The Footy Show’ or breaking world records on ‘Today’ proving that if anything, he’s even funnier now. Then on Friday May 16, hot on the heels of the top-rating docu-drama, Australia’s best INXS tribute act performs all the hits that made INXS famous throughout the world during the Michael Hutchence era. It promises to be a night of music and entertainment filled with great dance tunes that are as popular today as ever. Little Creatures Single Batch - The Rule of Three Little creatures are not one to be dull. With most of their single batches made in an interesting style and with an interesting, and usually with quite a long name. The latest instalment definitely sits well within those bounds. However much of a mouthful it is to say what this beer is “The Rule of Three – Belgian Double and English Bitter”, it is a delicious mouthful to drink. The Rule of Three has an enticingly spicy aroma which leads into a full on malt and hop mixture on the palate. The beer ends with a slight maple flavour and a touch of delicious bitterness. This single batch boasts a reasonable 5.7%abv which is enough to let you know that the alcohol is there but not too much to knock you over from drinking one. This single batch has such complex and

amazing flavours that it cannot be expected to last long on the taps at the alehouse, so be sure to get yourself one either from Alehouse or Harry Browns. Soon to come to Alehouse 24 are a range of special releases from 4 Pines Brewing Company, these are always excellent beer so keep an eye out for them in the coming weeks. There’s been some rippers, and a few fizzers. So over to Matthew W from Corinda who shared his faves with us. Congrats Matthew, a double movie pass is on its way! 1. Seeing Monica and chandler leave their apartment to start a new life in the burbs… *sniff* 2. Seinfeld The final episode of Seinfeld wasn’t the greatest made, but It was awesome to see them all come back together from throughout the many years. It was also great to see the show end with the exact same conversation that it started with. It was just sad that it ended as it was the funniest show of its time. 4. Full House Once again sad to see a classic family show come to an end. 5. City Homicde After finding the killer of Noni Hazlehurst’s character the rest of the cast rallied around and made the last episode so memorable.

There’s been talk of a sequel to Top Gun for years now, and while it’s not quite in the pipeline yet, Jerry Bruckheimer has spilled the beans on what it might be, should Top Gun 2 ever be made: “We’ve been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we’re getting closer and closer. The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. It’s just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he’s very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture.” Actor Benedict Cumberbatch is swapping Sherlock for Shakespeare — he plans on starring as Hamlet in London for a 12 week stint. Defence airlift helps save lives in the Solomon Islands

News that Cyclone Ita had devastated areas of the Solomon Islands brought a swift response from Australia’s military airlift group, with C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J aircraft flying strategic airlift missions into Honiara. Initial flights brought vital humanitarian relief supplies into the South Pacific island nation along with Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade officials and a Defence Assessment team. The Defence Assessment Team are conducting rapid damage assessments and providing specialist planning support to the DFAT relief efforts to assist the thousands of effected residents in and around Honiara. Also transported to Honiara are Australian Federal Police and a Queensland Fire Brigade Hazardour Materials team. Defence Force assistance to the Solomon Islands has a 10-year history, with the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands concluding its work in late-2013. On the ground in Honiara, ADF personnel provided a vital engineering design solution, allowing Honiara’s key Mataniko Bridge to be reopened to heavy vehicle traffic following severe damage caused by flash floods. The Mataniko Bridge along Honiara’s main supply route is one of the few remaining bridges on the island. “It was important we quickly came with up a solution to increase the load capacity of the damaged bridge,” said Army Engineer Major Karl Reynolds from the Brisbane-based Deployable Joint Force Headquarters.

The 16 member Defence Assessment Team was sent to Solomon Islands with 12 hours notice, and is a key part of the DFAT led rapid response efforts, following a request for assistance from the Government of the Solomon Islands. “Our immediate focus was to enable key bridges in and around Honiara to be reopened to the heavy vehicle traffic required for relief and reconstruction works to commence,” explained Army Lieutenant Colonel Mark Stone, who heads up the team of 16 Defence personnel. The Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, Mr Gordon Darcy Lilo thanked Australian personnel who arrived in Honiara on Sunday, 9 April to support relief efforts. “We are very grateful for the support we have received in this difficult time and thank all the Australian’s who have come over to help us in our recovery,” Prime Minister Lilo said. At the Bukanavera School Evacuation Centre in Honiara, DFAT and Defence staff viewed the difficult conditions being endured by the almost 1500 displaced persons resident there. “I would say that seventy per cent of the people here have

no homes to return to, and the other thirty per cent are too scared to return home,” said Evacuation Centre Chairman Sam Lonsdale. Residents had too little time to evacuate due to the suddenness of the flooding. According to the Australian Defence Advisor in Honiara, Army Lieutenant Colonel Richard Watson, “From receiving word of the potential of severe flooding on 3 April, to the waters actually hitting central Honiara was probably no more than 20 minutes, it took everyone by complete surprise.” An Australian C-17A Globemaster III aircraft taxis into position at Honiara airport carrying support personnel and humanitarian aid. Flying Officer Eric Peck co-pilots a RAAF C130J Hercules enroute to the Solomon Islands. Air Load Team members offload supplies from the C-17. A local man ponders how to cross the water after damage to the bridge is caused by flash flooding in Honiara. (Defence photos)

Sky’s the limit for Air Force cadets Prospective young aviators across Australia who are Australian Air Force Cadets now have a better chance of learning to fly with the opening of the AAFC Aviation Centre at Bathurst. The $5 million facility aims to make aviation training more accessible for cadets, who may go on to be the military pilots of tomorrow. With 7100 cadets in AAFC squadrons across Australia, having a centralised facility that can provide a higher throughput of cadets undergoing basic flight training is seen by Defence as a worthwhile venture. Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Darren Chester said the Centre has accommodation for up to 80 cadets and 20 staff, with classrooms a hangar to house the 19 gliders being purchased. The facility will be used by cadets aged between 13 and 20 who will travel there from all over Australia to participate in weekend and school holiday aviation camps,” he said. “Bathurst was chosen because of its uncongested airspace and being close to Sydney, providing easier access for cadets.”

The AAFC is sponsored by the RAAF, with the aim of developing leadership, initiative and self reliance in youths in their teenage years. It is also seen as providing a strong incentive for cadets to join the Australian Defence Force. Many senior Air Force officers started their careers as Air Force Cadets, and the organisation has established a strong reputation for producing the leaders of tomorrow, in both military and civilian careers. ADGs continue duty in Afghanistan Airfield Defence Guards from RAAF Amberley have deployed to Afghanistan to bolster the international team providing security at Kandahar airfield. The ADGs from No 2 Security Forces Squadron work as part of the Commander Kandahar Airfield Security Force. Australia’s military contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan is deployed under Operation SLIPPER. There are currently approximately 400 Australian Defence Force personnel deployed within Afghanistan. Approximately 800 personnel provide support from locations within the broader Middle East Area of Operations, including the maritime commitment.

ADF personnel continue to be engaged in Afghanistan through training and advising the Afghan National Security Forces in Kabul and Kandahar. Through to the end of 2014, Australia is providing instructors, advisors and support staff to the UK-led Afghan National Army Officer Academy in Kabul, which includes a force protection platoon. This commitment will continue to provide valuable advice within the Afghan National Army 205 Corps senior leadership. PROPERTY & FINANCE

Your new home awaits at Sovereign Pocket

BY MARK BOURIS

So you know about money? There’s a lot of choice in how you handle your finances, and none of it is covered in school. How do you allocate your money? How do you buy a house and save for retirement and raise your kids? Here are five things you should know about finance. Official Cash Rate: The Reserve Bank sets the benchmark for what it costs to borrow money. The central bank meets once a month and decides on the Official Cash Rate and lenders add on to this for their mortgages etc. The RBA uses interest rates to influence the economy and to keep inflation between 2 and 3 per cent. Right now rates are low, but when inflation starts moving up, so will interest rates. So pay attention. Mortgage: a home loan is generally the cheapest debt you can access in Australia. So it should form a part of your wealth building plans because you pay a low interest rate over many years to buy an appreciating asset. Down the track your lender might allow you to refinance the loan to put other higher-interest debts under the low-cost mortgage. Read the fine print on a mortgage: a 4.89 per cent home

loan might also quote a ‘comparison rate’ of 5.09 and this second rate this is what you’ll actually pay. Credit Cards: a credit card (and a store finance card) is a short term, unsecured loan facility that comes with a 15 to 20 per cent interest rate. So if you have a $5,000 credit card balance charging 18 per cent, and you only make minimum monthly payments, it will take 33 years to pay it off, with interest of $12,181. The trick to this kind of debt? Use it short-term, and pay it off as fast as possible. If it becomes hard to pay it off, talk to your lender about folding it into your mortgage. Superannuation: super is the best way to build retirement savings because of the tax breaks and the fact that employers have to contribute the money anyway. . Investing: Over a ten-year period, investing in Australian shares gives you returns of around 9 per cent per year, but you’ll experience volatility. A savings account is virtually zero-risk but the yield is low and you risk having your earnings subsumed by inflation. All portfolios need to be diversified.

Stockland is adding another element to its residential development portfolio with the launch of an innovative spec home project at its Sovereign Pocket community at Deebing Heights. The four-home project, in partnership with Hallmark Homes, is aimed at meeting the needs of a growing number of buyers looking for brand new completed homes. The first slabs have just been laid and there is already strong interest in the project, with the first home expected to be completed in June this year. If you’re in the market for a brand new home, this is a great opportunity and you could be moved in as soon as July! The homes, featuring stone bench tops and overhead cupboards to the ceiling in the kitchen and wide pivot entry doors, will particularly appeal to buyers who qualify for the $15,000 Great Start Grant but do not want to make interest repayments and pay rent while waiting for their home to be built. They will also appeal to people who prefer to

let an expert make the home design decisions for them and ensure buyers only have one contract to sign. Stockland has teamed up with Hallmark Homes because of the company’s reputation as one of the leading builders in both Ipswich and Queensland. Three of their display homes are located at Sovereign Pocket and they are very popular with buyers in terms of quality and price. Sovereign Pocket is a fast-growing Stockland community in the western corridor and is close to shopping, schools, health services and employment opportunities. It is only minutes from the Yamanto shopping precinct and six kilometres from the Ipswich CBD. The community has beautiful natural surrounds and incorporates wide streets and footpaths and plenty of open space. For more information, visit the Sales and Information Centre on Sovereign Drive at Deebing Heights, call 1800 170 192, or go to www.stockland.com.au/sovereignpocket.

Corolla marches to top of chart Toyota’s newly released Corolla sedan has powered the popular small car to national best-seller status in March, according to figures released recently.

Based on the Dodge Journey, the front-wheel drive Freemont is Fiat’s first SUV. Available model options are Base, Urban and Lounge each of which offers a great list of outstanding amenities. The Base and Urban versions come with 17-inch alloy wheels, while the Lounge sports a 19-inch alloy wheel size. The Base, mid-range Urban and rangetopping Lounge models have a 125kW 2.4-litre petrol four-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission; while the high-end Urban sports an optional 125kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, available with a 6-speed

manual transmission. The Fiat Freemont Lounge model, has the option of a rear-seat DVD system and sunroof. All three Fiat Freemont models will measure in at 4910mm long, 1878mm wide and 1705mm high, with a wheelbase of 2890mm. In the first full month of local sales, Corolla topped the sales charts with 4,086 deliveries - its best March on record and almost 500 more than any other vehicle. The new sedan, released to the market during February, exceeded expectations by contributing well over one-third of the Corolla total in March. Combined tallies for the Corolla hatch and the new sedan were 22.6 per cent higher than in February and 16.3 per cent ahead of March last year. Corolla’s success - together with an all-time record for RAV4 of 1,888 sales - ensured Toyota posted its best month of sales this year (18,275 vehicles) and its strongest firstquarter result since 2010 (48,121). Toyota’s total for the three months to the end of March was more than 20,000 ahead of its nearest rival - a margin that equates to at least 226 sales per day.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the company and its dealers had worked hard to lift market share this year to 18 per cent and push for a 12th consecutive year of market leadership. “With the arrival of the new-generation Kluger just a few weeks ago, Toyota now has the most up-to-date family in the burgeoning SUV market,” Mr Cramb said. Mr Cramb said locally built Camry as well as HiAce van, 4x2 HiLux and Tarago had achieved double-digit percentage increases in sales this year. He said last month was only the second time Corolla had posted more than 4,000 sales in a March, resulting in solid growth this year of 7.3 per cent. For more information on the new Corolla and all things Toyota, contact local dealer Llewellyns on 3282 2922.
