New cinemas and Bunnings for Springfield Orion Springfield Central is set for a major expansion with approval of a gold class nine cinema complex, specialty stores, and a planned Bunnings development opposite Masters. Ipswich City Council has approved the Mirvac Town Centre Stage 3 development application, giving the green light for construction to start on the complex during 2014. The new cinema and shopping centre development will be adjacent to Main Street, opposite the recently approved Stage two development that included a Coles supermarket, which is planned for the western end of the existing complex and close to the Springfield Central Railway Station which opened this week. Orion opened in 2007 and currently has 37,438 square metres of retail and commercial space. Ipswich Planning and Development chairperson Paul Tully said with the goahead of stages two and three it would increase the total area of Orion to 73,847 square metres, which means it will eclipse Riverlink by 50 per cent. The approval also included an additional 1,165 car parking spaces for shoppers,

diners and moviegoers. Council has also received an application from Bunnings for a new store at the corner of Main Street and Southern Cross Circuit opposite Masters which will provide one of the most competitive locations for hardware and homeware buyers in the city. Cr Tully said the new commercial development at Orion would boost Ipswich’s economy and significantly reduce retail escape expenditure from the city. “Until five years ago, there was an estimated $400 million retail expenditure leaving the city every year and being spent in Brisbane and Logan. “The Springfield expansion combined with other developments across the city will reduce this significantly.” Mayor Paul Pisasale said the new cinemas

earmarked for Orion would attract people from across Ipswich and from Brisbane’s western suburbs and parts of Logan City including Greenbank. He said the extension of the railway line to Springfield Central would significantly enhance the western corridor as a prime residential and commercial location in southeast Queensland. “The proposed development is a tremendous vote of confidence in our city. “The Springfield development will eventually be home to 86,000 residents and include health, education, commercial, and community hubs in the latest masterplanned community in Australia.”

Ipswich Life wishes all our readers and advertisers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Our first issue for 2014 will be January 15

New train to boost Springfield growth Trains are now rolling into Springfield’s two new railway stations, with the opening of the new Springfield passenger rail line, expected to bring boom times to this rapidly expanding area of southeast Queensland. This first stage of the $475 million Richlands to Springfield transport corridor has already led to a significant increase in land sales in the area, and the dual carriageway upgrade of the Centenary Highway to Springfield will also contribute to this population expansion. Arrival of the first train at Springfield Central Station was a ceremonial occasion, with Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale in full mayoral regalia and Town Crier Mark Overell giving the passengers a loud greeting they won’t soon forget. “This is an historic day for Springfield, and for Queensland Rail,” said the Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson. “This is the first part of three major projects in the area, to be followed by the opening of two additional lanes on the Centenary Highway early next year, and the construction of 400 additional car spaces for the station. “This is a catalyst for Springfield, a coming of age, and an exciting path for this region.” Mayor Paul Pisasale said that infrastructure projects such as the railway are vital to a rapidly expanding population in the Ipswich region. “In 18 years Ipswich’s population will increase to an estimated 462,000. Ipswich is part of the sustainable solution to population growth in

south east Queensland. “Ultimately we want to see the railway line extend to Redbank Plains, through to Ripley Valley, Yamanto and Ipswich Central.” Cr Pisasale also paid tribute to the vision of Maha Sinnathamby, Bob Sharpless and the business partners of Springfield Land Corporation (SLC). “They could have come in and just bought the land and subdivided, but they wanted to create a master planned community, and they have done that.”

Springfield founder and visionary Maha Sinnathamby said the railway line was a “major game changer” for not only the development of Springfield but would also have a major impact on surrounding areas. “It will support a community that is coming here in large numbers,” he said. “Ultimately, this Western Corridor region will be home to 800,000; this railway is a real case of nation building. “We are community builders and we want to make sure that this train supports the lives of many, many families in the coming years.” The geographical separation of Ipswich Central and Springfield Central is expected to diminish over time as the Ripley Valley development merges the two population centres. Cr Pisasale said that the Council has worked hard with Springfield as a master planned community to create a growth area with infrastructure in place. “You can’t have population growth without infrastructure. The railway line, the motorway and major community projects are some of the steps you need in a growth area.” Clockwise from top: Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomes the first train into Springfield Central Station. Timely security reminder for shoppers It may be Christmas but it’s also that time of year when bank accounts can be emptied, packages are stolen, and thieves are ready to pounce. Ipswich Police has issued a timely reminder to shoppers and residents to be extra vigilant this month as it only take a split second for a thief to snatch a handbag, phone, purse or wallet from your trolley, and often it is done without you even knowing about it till you get to the checkout. Also people should be aware that there with such an influx of online shopping, thieves have been known to target packages left on doorsteps and mailboxes. Ipswich Police are warning shoppers who are ordering Christmas gifts or items online this year to be cautious when they are being home delivered. Delivered items should never be left unattended. Anyone expecting an item should ensure they are at home to collect it, that there is someone that can receive the item on the recipient’s behalf or that the item can be redirected to a local post office or business address. Police are also urging Christmas shoppers to be vigilant when shopping out and

about. Drivers should not leave gifts and valuable items in their vehicles as thieves will often take up the opportunity to do their shopping directly from your car. It only takes one small absentminded moment while looking at an item or when you are too busy with children, or packages, to notice that you have become a victim of crime. Tips for shopping safely this Christmas include: n Do not carry large amounts of cash while Christmas shopping. n Do not leave valuable items including Christmas purchases in your vehicle. n Do not leave your handbag unattended in the shopping trolley. n Do not leave your handbag open. n Always consider your personal safety and property security. For more information on Crime Prevention Strategies contact Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit on 3817 1351 or visit www. police.qld.gov.au and follow the links to crime prevention. If you do see any criminal activity over the holiday period, contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or at www. crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day. Map your fitness level in Springfield Residents of Springfield are being encouraged to map their fitness, with the launch of a new application tailor-made for their community. Developer Lend Lease, Ipswich City Council and market-leading fitness app, ‘Map My Fitness’ has launced an innovative pilot program facilitating better use of Greater Springfield’s extensive parks, walking and cycling tracks, water bodies and outdoor fitness equipment, using the latest technology. The ‘Map My Fitness’ app used on a smart phone allows Greater Springfield park users to log workouts, create and monitor a personalised workout calendar, create personalised maps which can be shared with friends or the public, create personal challenges and goals, as well as food diaries and calorie counts. Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson, Councillor David Morrison has tried the application and loves the innovative addition to the park. “Technology, data and competition are coming together at Robelle Domain to improve the health and fitness of residents with the introduction of a Map My Fitness hotspot,” Cr Morrison said. “Map My Fitness is a global phenomenon and I’m excited for residents to be part of it. Under the pilot program Map My Fitness signage will be installed at The Circle in Springfield Central’s 24 hectare park, Robelle Domain. “ Residents can download the Map My Fitness app and access information about popular routes and activities through the QR code on park signage. Lend Lease Regional Development Manager, Ian Murray said Lend Lease had initiated the pilot

program to create healthier and more connected communities. “We’ve long know the benefits of having many great, activated open spaces in our communities, along with well-planned connections through cycling and walking tracks – this pilot program will ensure residents can get the very best from the facilities they love,” Mr Murray said. “Our research showed that there was high use of smart phones in the area and that prompting signage had the potential to facilitate behaviour change. Usage of Map My Fitness through the QR Code will be monitored by Lend Lease and Ipswich City Council to judge the success of the pilot program. If successful the technology will be implemented in future parks. Map My Fitness has over 10 million registered users and is the premier web, mobile and social destination for the healthy and active consumer. You can download the app at www. mapmyfitness.com Photo: Cr David Morrison at Robelle Domain.

‘Phishing’ - what is it, and how can I stop it Phishing is a word coined around 1995 when the Internet was relatively new. Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites were not even on the radar. ‘Phishing’ is a means of catching the unwary by offering bait; computer-hacker slang often replaces the ‘f’ with ‘ph’. The core of a Phishing email is to get you to give up information in the form of usernames, passwords, pin numbers, bank account details, even your mother’s maiden name. This information is used by scammers to gain access into your bank accounts, or to conduct outright identity theft. The scammers prey on ignorance or lack of attention by the intended victim and in most cases the website, the scammers send you to generally looks and feels much like the valid eCommerce/banking site. There are a number of triggers to help you identify a phishing email. 1. Financial institutions a will never send an email asking you to reset your password or validate personal information. 2. No, you haven’t won the lottery or inherited a million dollars. 3. If it looks dodgy it most likely is. 4. If there is a link in the email, hover your

mouse over the link and have a look what link is displayed. The link will generally be to an obscure domain name or host name. 5. If you do click on the link and the website looks valid, check for SSL certificate by locating the security lock in your browser and clicking on it to see who it’s issued to. How can I protect myself? 1. If it is too good to be true then it probably is, so don’t click on it. 2. If in doubt delete it. 3. You can invest in a good Anti Spam/Anti Virus cloud service that scans each email before landing in your mailbox. 4. As always, common sense prevails, you would not give your pin for your bank card to a stranger on the street so why enter it on a website that you are unsure of. So long as there are people willing to click on a link and divulge their information there will be phishing emails. The best way to prevent it, is through education. Know what to look for and more importantly don’t just enter in details to a website because of fear or reward. www.conetix.com.au

Get your work skills recognised with Bremer TAFE Have you developed good work skills and knowledge, but need the paper to prove it? Ever wished you had that piece of paper to show how great you are at your job? Or are you kicking yourself because you never finished that course? At the Bremer Institute of TAFE we can help. Our staff can assess your prior knowledge and skills to see if they meet today’s industry standards. By going through the process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) with one of our qualified teachers, it could provide you with a full or part qualification. Charlotte Mounsey, Customer Enquiry Manager at the Bremer TAFE said that RPL offers a great opportunity to recognise the skills you already possess. “RPL and credit transfers are an important assessment pathway, particularly for people who are considering study, as the recognition gained may considerably reduce the study time needed to obtain a qualification.” “The RPL assessment can include workplace

observation, interviews and professional conversations, work samples and documented evidence,” she said. The RPL process can also identify what training you may need to complete your qualification. The process could suit you if you have: work skills and knowledge, trade skills, paid or unpaid work experience, life experience, or community work experience. Even if you have never formally studied or undergone training in a particular area you may still be able to have your skills formally recognised. To find out more about RPL and our range of courses visit The Bremer Institute of TAFE free Enrolment evenings from 5pm on Tuesday, January 14 at the Springfield Campus and at the Bundamba Campus on Wednesday, January 15. BLAIR

Blair Disability Links A record number of Disability Service providers from the Ipswich and Somerset region held information stalls at my annual Blair Disability Links which I hold in conjunction with International Day of People with Disability on 3rd December. I held the first Blair Disability Links in 2010 when I recognised the need for disability service providers, people living with disability and carers of people with disability to connect and share information. I am very pleased to say that the event has grown to become a significant community event for Ipswich and the Somerset. With more than 40 service providers holding stalls and hundreds of people milling about, this year’s Blair Disability Links had a festive and fun feel to it. A key component of the event is the information booklet, now more than 50 pages and contains a raft of information on all the disability services available in Ipswich and the Somerset region. The Blair Disability Links information booklet has become something of a ‘bestseller’ (although it’s a free booklet) in Ipswich and the Somerset Region. We have provided the community, including service providers and doctor’s surgeries with more than 10,000 copies over the past three years. The booklets are an important tool in assisting service providers to link with each other as well as an important reference point for people living with disability and their carer’s. Almost everyone will be touched by disability at some stage throughout their lives and today’s event is a great way to show our own achievements, network and provide advice and information to the public. If you would like a copy of the Blair Disability Links booklet, please call my office on 3201 5300. Warm regards, Shayne Neumann Member for Blair

Art Gallery now a Construction Site for Kids Can you imagine the fun your child would have making their dream cubby from giant foam blocks? Don’t just think about it, head to the Ipswich Art Gallery these holidays where the kids can bring their creative building ideas to life - at Construction Site. Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the interactive, family exhibition featured construction-themed exhibits and activities including hundreds of foam blocks in different shapes and sizes which children could use to create their ultimate cubby. “Construction Site is one of the Ipswich Art Gallery’s most popular exhibitions and this is the first time it has been presented on such a large scale with hands-on activities right throughout the building – it is a little builder’s paradise,” Cr Pisasale said. “The Children’s Gallery is a giant building zone filled with foam blocks where children can work individually or as a team to construct their designs and there’s also a special play area that’s been created for children under 3 with construction-themed toys to suit their learning and development.

6 IPSWICHLIFE

“Downstairs, there’s the Ball Run design challenge where the aim is to use recycled materials to create a run that keeps a ball in motion for as long as possible and children will love the popular indoor Kinetic Sand which they can sculpt and mould into different shapes.” Cr Pisasale said Construction Site had been designed by Ipswich Art Gallery staff and was developed in response to the core belief that creativity played an integral role in building children’s self-esteem. “The Ipswich Art Gallery’s emphasis on family programming is attracting lots of visitors from across the South East Queensland region. “Exhibitions, like Construction Site, give children the freedom to express their creativity their own way in a fun, safe environment and that has a whole range of positive flow-on effects as they grow.”

Construction Site also featured the miniature city BoxWorld which was created by Warren Thomas more than a decade ago and made almost entirely out of recycled materials. “You’ve got to see this exhibit to believe it – it looks just like a typical Australian city with all the buildings and infrastructure you’d expect to see like high rises, big business, motorways and sports stadiums,” Cr Pisasale said. “You get a great view from above and your feet won’t even have to leave the ground!” With another Ipswich summer here, Cr Pisasale also said the Gallery was the ideal destination for cool relief from the city heat. “I’m no weatherman but, as a parent, I know temperatures can get just as hot inside as they do outside especially when the excitement of Christmas has passed and it becomes a challenge to keep the kids entertained during school holidays.

“Construction Site offers hours of fun in air-conditioned comfort and entry includes all day access to activities and exhibits so you are welcome to come and go as you like and enjoy other Ipswich attractions in the city’s centre.” Entry to Construction Site costs $3 per person or $10 for a family of 5 (group must include at least 1 adult). Infants up to 6 months of age will be admitted for free. The admission fee includes all day entry to Construction Site, Ball Run, BoxWorld and associated craft activities. The exhibition is recommended for children aged 2 – 12 years and all ages are welcome. Construction Site is on daily from 10am until 5pm at the Ipswich Art Gallery and ends on 27 January 2014. The Gallery will close from 1pm on 24 December 2013 and reopen at 10am on 2 January 2014.

What does Christmas mean to you? We all love Christmas, let’s be honest. Simply becuase it’s the one day of the year when you don’t have to work. Well, most of us. After many years in retail I always spare a thought for those people in retail, hospitality and service industries who work in the hotels, service counters and sell popcorn to moviegoers over Christmas. For some, it’s very tiring, and to be honest, exhausting time of the year. In many cases they barely get a chance to rest up before they have to be up at sparrow’s on Boxing Day to prepare for what has become a bit of an Australian tradition in the ‘Boxing Day Sales’. KER-ching! There’s another tradition, and that’s the blockbuster movies that come out on Boxing Day. With Orion at Springfield soon to get cinemas, Ipswich residents will soon have FOUR cinema complexes to choose from. It seems not so long ago that we just had the single screen cinemas at the R.T.Edwards building in East Street. Yes kids, ONE screen. Hard to believe I know. I for one can’t wait to see the new Hobbit movie and I plan to see it in 4K3D, with

a super high frame rate, I’ve heard it is amazing to see. Yes, my precious... No matter what you choose to do these holidays, make sure you get one thing in, and that’s ‘Family Time’. With school, work, sport and life in general, the one thing people say these days is that there is never enough hours in the day, so take some time to spend it with your family and go do something you’ve wanted to do for ages. Whether it’s rock climbing, ice skating, a trip to the beach… make the most of the South East and bask in the diversity of things to do where we live, all within under an hour’s drive. Take the attitude that people come from all over the world to holiday here, and when was the last time you did something different? Go on, you know you want to. Take some pics and share on our Facebook page, we’d love to see your holiday snaps! From myself and everyone at Ipswich Life, thanks for your support in 2013 and we’ll be back bigger and better in 2014! E: darren@strikepublications.com.au

New section for Brassall Bikeway The fourth section of the Brassall Bikeway is now in place linking Gregory Street at Brassall to Wulkuraka Station. Ipswich City Council City Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said Scape Shapes Landscaping Pty Ltd had completed the construction phase of the project which involved the construction of a 2.1km link along Gregory St to Grace St. Cr Bromage said the new section joined up with the previous section of the bikeway which ran to Vogel Rd. The $1.8 million total project cost was jointly funded by council and the State Government under the South East Queensland Cycle Network Local Government Grant program. Cr Bromage said it was wonderful to be able to see the completion of the next stage of the popular cycling facility. She said this was the fourth section of the Brassall Bikeway to be constructed over four years. “The Brassall Bikeway is a dedicated off-road facility which links to Wulkuraka Railway Station, Brassall and North Ipswich. “Part of the South-East Queensland Principal Cycle Network, the new section is three metres wide and fully lit along its length. “A priority road crossing at Grace Street, Wulkuraka now gives cyclists the right of way in this area.” Cr Bromage said the bikeway would provide the community with a local active physical activity facility. 8 IPSWICHLIFE

“The development of the Brassall Bikeway through the area is a great way for residents to get outdoors, get active and explore their local neighbourhood.

Have you ever wanted to experience that extra luxury of going to the movies and turn it into a REAL night out? Well now you can, with Limelight Cinemas opening ‘Phase Two’ of their Ipswich Riverlink complex, as ‘The Lounge’ is now open for business, and it’s more affordable than you think! The Lounge features two intimate cinemas with fewer seats, more room, and best of all…food and
drink service to your seat. Plus there’s a private lounge and bar area. It’s open right now and at a fraction of the price of other ‘premium’ cinema experiences. Limelight Cinemas’ Manager Marissa explained how ‘The Lounge’ will be THE place to see movies this summer. “Here’s how it works,” she said. “Simply arrive 20-30 minutes prior to the movie showtime and relax in the lounge area where you can have a drink, browse the menu and plan your evening. “We have a range of cocktails, spirits, beer, wine, soft drinks and coffees, along with entrées, main meals, pizzas, share plates, desserts and so much more…all at prices that won’t break the bank. “You can order them to come during the movie, so let us know what seat you’re in, what you’d like to eat and we’ll do the rest,” Marissa added. “If you want an ice cream sundae half toward the end of the movie, just let us know, the choice is yours…and our staff have all had Stealth Ninja* training so they do it

quietly and quickly!” Limelight Cinemas is taking Ipswich by storm, and The Lounge is just another reason why it’s the ONLY way to watch movies in our city. With upcoming blockbusters like Anchorman 2, The Hobbit, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Disney’s Frozen, jump online and book your tickets to what is going to be the best summer EVER for Ipswich moviegoers! Plus if you’re stuck for a gift idea, why not grab a Limelight Gift Card? Buy online or at the foyer. For more info, bookings and session times, visit www.limelightcinemas.com.au *Note: Limelight Cinemas wishes to reassure its customers that no ninjas were harmed during the training process. rights to the Indiana Jones Franchise, under an agreement with Paramount Pictures (who release the first 4 films). Although there’s no plans for a fifth instalment yet, we have our fingers crossed, that our favourite archaeologist will make a return to the big screen . The first four Indiana Jones movies have grossed $1.9 billion worldwide.

The Grammy nominees have been announced and I bet our neighbours were celebrating big time as New Zealands star, 17 year old Lorde was nominated for Record of the Year (Royals), Song of the Year (Royals) and Best Pop Vocal Album (Pure Heroine). Although when organisers first announced the Grammy nominees they accidently called Lorde Australian, but after a Twitter tirade, apologised profusely. Good thing they didn’t mention the Pavlova debate… Legendary Rockers The Rolling Stones (above) have announced a 14-date (at this stage) Australian tour. Their last tour was their Bigger Bang tour in 2006. They were lured to Australia this time by the South Australian government to play at the recently upgraded Adelaide Oval. MTV has declared Miley Cyrus the best artist of 2013. Her VMA’s duet with Robin Thicke was their most watch video of the year and articles dedicated to Cyrus had more hits than any other artist.

Other very happy nominees include: Mackelmore (above) & Ryan Lewis nominated for Album of the Year (The Heist), Song of the Year (Same Love), Best new Artist and Best Rap Album; Daft Punk nominated for Album of the Year (Random Access Memories), Record of the year (Get Lucky) and Best Dance Album. Bruno Mars nominated for Record of the Year (Locked out of Heaven), Pop Album (Unorthodox Jukebox); Pink Song of the Year (Just Give Me A Reason) and Taylor Swift Album of the Year (Red). Taylor Swift has broken plenty of records on her Australian tour this year, being the first solo female muso to headline stadium tours in Australia since Madonna in the 90s, Swift played to SOLD OUT stadiums in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

EASY

They aren’t the only ones to call it the “Year of Miley”. Search engine Bing released results of the most ‘Searched for Celebrities in 2013’ for 13 different countries around the world and yep, Miley Cyrus topped our list. Australia’s Top 10 most searched for Celebs were: Miley Cyrus (below), Miranda Kerr, Kevin Rudd, Amanda Bynes, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Tony Abbott, Julia Gillard, Gina Rinehart, Shane Warne. This compares to the US lists: Beyonce Knowles, Kim Kardasian, Rhianna, Taylor Swift, Madonna, Justin Beiber, Nicki Minaj, Amanda Bynes, Miley Cyrus (below) and Barrack Obama. Could there be another Indiana Jones (right) film on the cards? Disney has snapped up the marketing and distribution

INTERMEDIATE

And as the Christmas party season is upon us — I’ll bet there’ll be plenty of karaoke. If you’re stuck for what to sing — take your cues from this year’s chart of the ‘most song karaoke songs’. Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball takes the top position, followed by Katy Perry’s Roar and Psy’s Gangnam Style (although how you karaoke those lyrics is a mystery). Rounding out the top ten are: Call Me Maybe — Carly Rae Jepson; Someone like you — Adele; What Makes you Beautiful

— One Direction; Fire Work — Katy Perry; Bohemian Rhapsody — Queen (above); Blurred Lines — Robin Thicke and Bon Jovi — Livin on a Prayer. Till next time....Louise Listen to Louise daily 9am-Noon on 97.3FM

Christmas is T-Time Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la la la la, la la la la… ‘Tis the season filled with festivities, food, family, friends and fun so where does this leave me? It leaves me sitting on the sofa under the warm circulation of the ceiling fan wearing my faithful old t-shirt. Between the Christmas eating and the Christmas partying, I find nothing makes me happier than getting about in the comfort of my favourite shirt. If I must be truthful, every day is a good day if there is t-shirt time! And wow have I had a few goodies over the years. Kylie Minogue’s 1990 ‘Enjoy Yourself’ tour t-shirt would have at least seen twelve years of faithful companionship; followed by my still long standing favourite pale blue ‘cheapie’ that I can’t even remember where I purchased it but most weeks it still gets a run and has done so now for about fifteen years. I have however proudly added two new ones to the collection which I am sure I will be sitting here talking about in 2030! They are both coincidentally a very boring grey but with bold block lettering. One with my favourite navy and one with gold that I actually purchased to go with my gold joggers! Now that is mixing the boring with the bold; the passion with the fashion! So go on… Don’t feel bad and get that favourite t-shirt on whenever you can… just don’t team it up with ‘trackie dacks’ when you leave the house. Merry Christmas everyone! xx

The Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show, to be held 1 -2 March 2014 at RAAF Base Point Cook outside Melbourne, is destined to be an historic and memorable event. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Darren Chester, and Acting Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Leo Davies launched the CMA Air Show last week. Mr Chester said the Air Show will commemorate a significant moment in Australia’s military aviation history. “The 1st March 2014 will be the 100th Anniversary of the first military flight in Australia when Lieutenant Eric Harrison, originally from Castlemaine and an aviation instructor with the Central Flying School, took off in a Bristol Boxkite here at the spiritual home of the Air Force, Point Cook. “This Air Show will provide a wonderful opportunity for Australians to see the evolution in technology and capability of military aviation in this country,” he said. On display for the first time at the Air Show will be a newly built replica of a Bristol Boxkite Aeroplane. No original Boxkite aircraft exist today. The Boxkite replica, built at the RAAF Museum at Point Cook, recently completed a program of flight testing when the aircraft was successfully flown on Wednesday, 11 September, this year. AVM Davies said the Air Force was proud to host the Centenary of Military Aviation

Air Show. “The Air Show is an opportunity to demonstrate the professionalism and aviation capabilities of today’s Defence Force.” he said. “We have chosen the theme of ‘Tradition, Innovation and Evolution’ for the event to reinforce the extraordinary journey of military aviation from hand built aircraft like the Boxkite to the complex and powerful military aircraft of today. Point Cook is the birthplace of military aviation in Australia and the oldest continually operating military airfield in the world. Encompassing a spectacular Air Show with air displays and ground displays, the Centenary of Military Aviation is a national event celebrating 100 years of military aviation in Australia. Gates are open from 8am to 4pm. Flying displays will be held from 10am to 3:30pm. The flying program is the same for both days of the Air Show. The Bristol BoxKite was the first military aircraft flown in Australia at RAAF Point Cook, on 1 March 1914. No original Bristol BoxKite aircraft survive today. Three reproductions were built for the making of the film ‘Those magnificent men in their flying machines’. One is on display at the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, another is on display at the Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire (where it is still flown during flying displays), and the third one is on display at the Museum of Australian Army Flying in Queensland. Full scale C-17 cargo compartment trainer delivered to RAAF Amberley Boeing has delivered a full-scale C-17 Globemaster III cargo compartment trainer (CCT) to 36 Squadron at RAAF Amberley. A fully-functional replica of a C-17 fuselage, the CCT is capable of realistically simulating both day and night operating and loading conditions for loadmaster, aeromedical evacuation and aeromedical specialist training scenarios. Fitted with a cargo bay, functioning loading ramp, loadmaster's station and other cargo systems found on the real aircraft, the trainer is housed in a purpose-built facility at the air base, and can accommodate payloads ranging from 18 pallets of cargo to helicopters, as well as an M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks. Air 8000 program director GPCAPT Warren Bishop said the CCT represents the final component of the C-17 programme, which has delivered a substantial capability to Australia.

"It will add significant value to the RAAF, providing the capability to train pilots and loadmasters in Australia. The CCT will be maintained by L-3 Communications under contract to provide continued training for RAAF C-17A personnel. The RAAF currently operates six C-17A aircraft, which support military, humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping missions Below: The C-17 Cargo Compartment Trainer. PROPERTY & FINANCE BY MARK BOURIS

Australia needs a fairer financial system You may have caught wind that there will be an inquiry into the financial system early in the New Year. Whilst this news is probably snooze inducing for the most people, there are plenty of reasons why you should pay attention. The inquiry will address some key problems with the system and Australians have a once in a decade opportunity to get involved. Here are some of my thoughts so far to make the system fairer and better for the hardworking people that it is meant to serve. First, we need to see transparency in interest rate advertising required in legislation to protect Australians from ‘too good to be true’ deals. People need to have the ability to make informed decisions and compare apples with apples. After all, a mortgage is probably the biggest debt you’ll ever take on. You want to make sure you’re getting the fair deal on it. Second, the two Australian dreams — a home and a comfortable retirement – are becoming unachievable for so many people. We’re taking on larger mortgages, later in life, and for longer. Given we know one of the best indications of security in retirement is owning your home, the system needs to take better account of that and the current focus on retirement income streams. It’s not one or the other – it’s both.

Thirdly, every Australian should have the ability to master his or her own finances. If you’re one of the few that can, either you were lucky enough to have parents that taught you these skills, or you have sought out professional financial advice. We need reform of our systems to make financial education a priority for all people, and from a young age. My fourth point is that there needs to be more competition in the lending market. Smaller players can provide tailored, competitive and secure services and keep the system competitive and consumer-focused. In the past, government and the regulators have favoured the bigger ‘too big to fail’ players at the expense of their competitors. Yet size does not equal safety in financial systems – the GFC proved that – and as any economist will tell you, when there isn’t enough competition, Australians end up paying more. Finally, our system is not geared for women, young people, small business owners, or for people that have irregular, interrupted income due to family, consultancy work or other situations that fall outside the 9-5 norm. Accumulating an income to retire on seems a fantasy in these cases and that’s why reform of superannuation contribution rules is necessary. If you have some ideas, I’d love to hear from you. Corolla and Camry leading the way Toyota’s Corolla and Camry are on track for major sales triumphs in 2013, with just weeks to run until year’s end.

Corolla, a perennial favourite among car buyers, topped the sales charts again in November to stretch its lead to 1,734 sales in the race to be Australia’s best-selling car for 2013.

This year will be the first time Corolla, or any Toyota, has taken the title — barring an unlikely blow-out in December.

Meanwhile, Camry is odds-on to record its 20th consecutive year as the country’s top-selling mid-size car.

The Australianbuilt sedan now has an unassailable lead of more than 14,000 sales while its closest rival is averaging fewer than 660 sales per month.

Toyota is equally certain to retain overall market leadership for the 11th year in a row as the best-selling automotive brand in Australia.

To the end of November, dealers have delivered more than 195,000 Toyota vehicles to local customers —

92,000 ahead of any other company.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said he was not ready to claim victory for Corolla despite being quietly confident it would be confirmed as Australia’s best-selling car.

“Corolla has always been popular during its 47 years on sale in Australia with well over 1.2 million cars sold here — more than any other Toyota in our history,” Mr Cramb said.

“Since car dealerships opened on January 2 this year, Corolla has chalked up almost 40,000 sales in a close battle for sales supremacy,” he said.

“For Camry, though, it’s mathematically impossible for any other model to come between our locally built hero and a winning streak that began way back in 1994 as the country’s best-selling mid-size car.” For more information on all things Toyota, contact your local dealer Llewellyn Toyota on 3282 2922.
