Walk on Wheels Buying a mobility aid for a loved one can sometimes be a challenge, especially when that loved one may feel that they ‘are not at that stage yet’. “We hear many horror stories from customers who have purchased poor quality products over the internet,” said Manager Lauren Antonenko.

“When these products fail, these customers cannot track down the place from which the product was purchased so they call us for help. “Most of the time we are unable to track down parts and the items cannot be repaired, and often it’s not just small items like wheelie walkers — we’ve had customers purchase very expensive mobility scooters in the same manner or from door-to-door sales people only to find that parts are unavailable!” Whether it is an electric lift recliner, mobility scooter, shower chair or something as simple as a wheelie walker or pickup reacher, Walk on Wheels Ipswich can offer expert advice for those tricky situations. Conveniently located in the Medicross Medical Centre in the heart of the Ipswich medical precinct, Walk on Wheels Ipswich offer

Ipswich Motorway needs to be fixed We have waited long enough for the last section of the Ipswich Motorway to be upgraded. Fixing the Darra to Rocklea section is my number one infrastructure priority this Federal Budget. It was the former Federal Labor Government that built the Dinmore to Darra section of the Ipswich Motorway at a cost of $2.8 billion. In Labor’s last budget, we put aside $279 million to kick-start the Darra to Rocklea upgrade from the Oxley roundabout to Suscatand Street. Completing this last 6 kilometre section of the Ipswich Motorway will improve road safety, ease traffic congestion and improve travelling time for users. It is important for farmers who want to get their produce to the Rocklea Markets and for those companies that want to get their minerals to the Port of Brisbane for export. It is important for those people who travel into Brisbane for specialist health services and to families who commute for sporting, shopping and cultural activities. I’ve been calling on the Abbott Government to immediately allocate the funding to finish the Ipswich Motorway upgrade and I’ll keep fighting to ensure we get the funding we need. I want to know what you think about the Federal Budget, send me an email at Shayne.Neumann.MP@aph.gov.au give me a call on 3201 5300 or drop by one of my mobile offices on the weekend.

Ipswich ranked in the world’s Top 7 smart cities Only seven cities worldwide have been selected by the New Yorkbased Intelligent Community Forum as finalists in its Top 7 Intelligent Communities of 2015 awards — and Ipswich is one of the seven. “Ipswich is already a winner,” says the ICF chairman, John Jung. “Your city is the only Australian city that has ever made it all the way to the final seven, which is a great achievement and one that will receive international recognition. There are many world cities that apply, so Ipswich should be very proud of its place in the Top 7. “There’s a ‘get it done’ attitude here, there’s great leadership and a real sense of a caring community, and you collaborate to achieve an end game. That’s what we are looking for. On paper, you meet all the criteria, and I’ve seen that in practice during my visit here.” As an urban planner, Mr Jung said that while Ipswich is in a transformation phase, with the rollout of the National Broadband Network underway but not complete, the elements of a truly smart city are in place, needing only time and commitment to realise the potential. He was particularly impressed with the master-planned communities in the Springfield area and recent developments, with Ecco Ripley now expanding rapidly. The key criteria of so called smart cities include broadband connectivity, a knowledgebased workforce, digital inclusion, innovation and creativity, and marketing and advocacy. Mr Jung’s job here is to assess the city against

key criteria for a report to an independent panel of judges. “We have a global jury of 140 people around the world; on paper your application was extremely strong,” he said. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said that Ipswich is an Associate Member of the ICF but plans to take up full membership soon, which will lead to greatly increased opportunities for international collaboration and business interaction on ‘smart city’ related enterprises. “This is a great thing for the city, as it recognises what we have achieved in transforming the city into a knowledge-based community that has a high level of social inclusion,” Cr Pisasale said. Long awaited road opens One of the most long-awaited roads in Ipswich is finally open, and the local community couldn’t be happier with the Collingwood Drive Extension now in operation. Previously, the road ended at Woodcrest Sate School, a frustrating short distance from Redbank Plains Road. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale, Ipswich City Council City Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage and Ipswich Deputy Mayor CVictor Attwood were all on hand at Woodlinks State School to celebrate the official opening of the Collingwood Drive Extension. The occasion was marked by a barbecue and fun fair followed by an official ceremony. Cr Bromage said the $6.5 million project was Ipswich’s largest single road construction project for the 2014-15 financial year. She said the road ran from the existing Collingwood Drive at Woodlinks Way to a new intersection on Redbank Plains Rd.

“Brisbane-based firm Epoca Constructions constructed the new road which links with the first stage of the Collingwood Drive Extension which opened to traffic in October 2012. “This is a vitally important road which offers motorists a significant reduction in travelling times between Ipswich and Collingwood Park.” The opening of the road will also signal access to a whole new housing estate, in the shape of ‘WoodLinks Village’, which will eventually be home to 2000 residents across 750 homes. The works also involved the continued upgrade of a 400m section of Redbank Plains Rd and the construction of a new intersection complete with traffic signals. Phase two of the works involved the upgrade of two lanes in each direction on Redbank Plains Rd with a single lane in each direction on Collingwood Drive. Cr Pisasale said the area was the growth corridor of Ipswich.

Exceptional Opportunities Ipswich Grammar School Open Day – Thursday, 21 May Ipswich Grammar School (IGS) offers exceptional opportunities in academics, arts and sports. IGS specialises in single sex schooling from Prep to Year 12 on one campus to ensure a complete education for all students. More than 98% of eligible 2014 graduates received an OP 1 to 15, positioning IGS as one of Queensland’s leading academic schools.

4 Ipswich Life

Headmaster and CEO, Robert Henderson said the results reflected the hard work and dedication of students and staff. “We’re certainly very proud of the achievements of our 2014 graduates,” he said. “Our Junior, Middle and Senior School programs ensure the boys are well prepared for life beyond high school.” An IGS education is now even more affordable with reduced fees for Prep to Year 3 students from 2016. Come along to Open Day, fill out an Enrolment Application and the school will also waive the $110 Application Fee for all new Prep to Year 12 students. The non-denominational day and boarding school will open its doors on Thursday, 21 May from 9am to 12pm. Open Day will include

guided tours of the school campus and Ipswich Grammar School Sporting Complex, Brassall. Senior staff from the academics, arts and sports departments will also be available to meet and greet future students and their families. Mr Henderson said Open Day would be a great opportunity to see the school in action. “It will be a normal school day for us – students will be going about their day and moving around the campus from class to class,” he said. “Families will have access to classrooms and we will have informal displays and presentations from a number of departments including Music, Science, HPE, Humanities and Technologies.” Mr Henderson said the fee reduction for Prep to Year 3 students would make IGS more accessible. “This is a carefully considered move that is designed to meet the market,” he said. “We are taking proactive steps to make an Ipswich Grammar School education more affordable. We want families to send their young men to Ipswich Grammar School from an early age to take full advantage of our exceptional learning opportunities.” As Queensland’s first secondary school and Australia’s second grammar school, IGS focuses on academic, cultural and sporting success to

develop a set of core values within young men. These core values of Excellence, Leadership, Integrity and Community help to develop students who are responsible, effective, creative, enterprising, happy and healthy members of society. Ipswich Grammar School offers GPS sports and activities for students in years 5 to 12, further enhancing one of Queensland’s most respected extra-curricular programs. GPS sports and activities include football, rugby, cricket, basketball, swimming, chess, cross country, debating, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The Ipswich Grammar School Open Day will be held on Thursday, 21 May from 9am to 12pm with registration in The Great Hall and parking off the Darling Street entrance. Fourth Mantra

Previously known as ‘Blinky Blues’, Fourth Mantra have released a debut EP at The Zoo called “Spare Change”. The band made a massive splash in early 2015 being selected to play in the RAW Brisbane showcase of independent artists, hitting 23 on the Triple J roots charts and getting consistent air play in Melbourne independent radio. The guys are ready for more in 2015 having debuting under the new name ‘Fourth Mantra’ as well as releasing two demos off the coming EP. By Hugh Mackay In his new best seller, Hugh Mackay shows how strong communities develop develop our moral sense and build our emotional security. He says that as ‘social creatues’ we can only reach our potential when we engage with our communities - in the local neighbourhood, a work and even online. Drawing on his lifelong work as a social researcher, Mackay creates a fictional suburb, Southwood, and populates it with characters who, like most of us, struggle to reconcile their need to belong with their desire to live life on their own terms. Through a series of stories, we witness the conflicts that arise when individuals assert their needs at the expense of others. (Pan Macmillan)

Dining out destination Ipswich The Perfect Drop at Brothers

By Mark Halls@Brothers

Winter is coming, which means lots of hearty homestyle meals, and a good wine is perfect to compliment the big range of dishes available at Brothers. Mark Halls is the Food & Beverage Manager and has been at the club for 19 years, so he knows a thing or two about a good dining experience. Here he shares some of his favourites to compliment your meal. The Scribber Cabernet Shiraz 2012: It’s not a real full bodied cab sav, it’s a bit lighter, and it goes perfect with winter dishes like our Lamb Shanks. It’s a Yalumba wine and goes so well with a dish like this, they are a match made in ‘Food Heaven’. Penfold Bin 28 Shiraz 2012: This is a wine that is perfect with steaks, especially the cuts at the Tryline. I always like a red with a steak, and this wine is

perfect with any cut of steak. It really compliments the flavour of the meat, and has a fantastic warming characteristic. Yalumba Termpranillo: This one is something a little different, as it’s a lighter style red that I’ve found goes perfect with one of our famous pizzas! Marks Tips: “Remember that the type of food you’re eating will affect the taste of the drink, and if they compliment each other that’s what you’re after. “It always used to be reds with red meat, and white with chicken or fish. But there are so many wines on the market now that you can match a drink with any meal, and at Brothers our staff have pointer cards which offer suggestions for drinks to enhance your meal. “As you get older your palette changes, so what you

The menu at Char’d is proving a big hit with Ipswich diners, with great food and even more Craft Beers coming to the location in the next few months. Marketing & Bar Manager Tim is passionate about beer and wine, and offered some of his personal tips along with Chef Ruel. “Some new meals have proven a massive hit with diners in Ipswich,” Ruel said. “We have Slow-cooked Beef Brisket, and Slow-Roasted Lamb Shoulder. ‘Slow-cooked’ means they are cooked overnight, for around 8-10 hours. The meat is so tender and the flavours are infused into the meat.” Tim recommends trying the ‘Bird in the Hand Two in the Bush’ Shiraz with these meals. “It’s a perfect match for slow cooked meat. Red meat and a big Shiraz will just compliment each

drank in your 20’s will be different to what you drink in your 40’s… that’s a natural change, and we often have wine tasting nights here at Brothers for people to explore a big range of wines to find a variety that they like. We have over 40 wines on the night, and my advice to people is ‘don’t look at the price’. If you find a wine you like, that’s what matters. “Come and try the meals at Brothers, and don’t be shy to ask for help choosing a drink to go with it… that’s all part of the service.” Bon Appetit! other perfectly. It’s a heavier red wine, has a big nose…very aromatic, and matches the richer flavour of the meat,” Tim said. One of the most popular meals is the twice cooked Pork Belly as Ruel explains: “We cook the Pork Belly for 3 hours, and it is braised in apple juice with spices. It’s slow cooked, then dried and cooked again to get that beautiful crunchy crackling on top!” Tim has the perfect match for that one too! “I’d look at a Craft Beer to go with our famous Pork Belly. We have the ‘Feral Hop Hog’, which has been voted Beer of the Year for the last five years by the public of Australia. It matches really well.” P.A. Hotel 170 Brisbane Rd, Booval Ph: (07) 3282 1577

Make the right choice – Get to TAFE in Bundamba Open House - May 19

[

TAFE Queensland South West in Bundamba is the place to be tomorrow (Tuesday May 19) with high school students and the Ipswich community invited to take part in hands-on, try-a-trade activities and to speak with teachers about qualifications and job outcomes, during two separate sessions.

The day will also see the most skilled tradies in the Ipswich region – varying from automotive to landscape apprentices – compete in the WorldSkills Australia regional competitions, with the final goal (following a national competition) to be chosen to represent Australia as a ‘Skillaroo’ at the following year’s international competition. Acting General Manager Phil Bell is encouraging the entire Ipswich community (and surrounds) to pop by the campus – saying there really will be something for everyone. “A TAFE Queensland qualification will improve your current position – whether you use it to enter the workforce; ascend the ranks in your workplace, or go on to further study – if you train with us you’ll have made the right choice,” Mr Bell said.

in our real world salon. For the open to the public session (3-6pm) we’ll be doing eyebrow stencilling and airbrush makeup, with our industry experts on-hand to field questions on all-things beauty; our qualifications and relating job outcomes.

Paul Luck, Landscape Construction teacher

]

The Open House will be broken into two sessions. From 9am to 1pm high school students will tour the campus and try their hands at activities varying from hair braiding through to a ‘farmer’s relay’. During the 3-6pm open-to-the-public session visitors will be able to speak with teachers about flexible training opportunities; career outcomes; recognition of prior learning and various payment options. Teachers will also conduct tours of the training spaces, including a fully operational restaurant, hair and beauty salons, as well as clinical nursing training rooms, which can be used for disaster relief if necessary. For more information about the TAFE in Bundamba Open House tomorrow, please visit ww.tafesouthwest.edu.au, or call 1300 914 754.

TAFE Queensland South West Building and Construction teacher Sam Mottram will be on hand to field all course enquiries at tomorrow’s Open House in Bundamba

Faces of TAFE Queensland South West Amity Litfin, Beauty teacher 1. What’s your industry background and what do you teach? I’ve worked in the hairdressing and beauty therapy industries for over 10 years, including positions with Ella Baché. My teaching role at TAFE sees me combine my two loves – being a therapist and sharing my passion, skills and knowledge with my students. I teach our Diploma of Beauty Therapy (including our ‘Accelerate’ course for high school students), and our Certificate III in Beauty Services. 2. What are some of the job outcomes from the courses you teach? Graduates, depending on the course they complete, will be qualified for positions such as a beauty therapist; a make-up artist, right through to a relaxation massage therapist. They might also use our qualifications to pursue career pathways to become a salon trainer, or an IPL therapist, or for education pathways, they might use our courses to go on to complete a Diploma of Salon Management, right through to a Bachelor of Health Science (Dermal Therapies). 3. What’s happening at the Open House in your space? For high school students we’ll be running nail painting and nail art try-a-trade activities

1. What’s your industry background? I’ve been teaching landscape construction to apprentices for four years at TAFE, and prior to that I had my own landscaping business for 21 years. I started in the industry after high school, qualifying as a landscape draftsman, then working as a labourer leading hand and supervisor. 2. What are some of the job outcomes from the courses you teach? When students complete their training (Certificate III in Landscape Construction) they are a qualified tradesperson and can apply to the Queensland building construction commission for their trade licence. 3. What’s happening at the Open House in your space? During the day the Landscape WorldSkills Australia regional competition will test a range of the skills required of a landscape professional. Competitors will construct a project following a plan, and will be judged on how accurately they follow the measurements on the plan, and how level and straight the elements are. This year’s plan includes a small timber deck; a paved area; a garden area and a small gravel bed with a feature pot!

Get your blood pressure checked Ecco Ripley Federal Member for Blair and Shadow Minister for Ageing, Shayne Neumann has joined with the National Stroke Foundation in urging Ipswich and Somerset Region residents to take part in Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check.

“Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check is all about getting people to take five minutes out of their day to have a blood pressure check and find out more about stroke,” Mr Neumann said. “I was shocked to learn that more than 24,396 people in Ipswich and the Somerset Region suffer from high blood pressure, putting them at serious risk of stroke. “Blood pressure needs to be measured regularly as there are generally no real red flags if you’re living with high blood pressure – it is known as the silent killer for a reason. National Stroke Foundation Queensland Executive Officer Libby Dunstan said too many Queenslanders were completely unaware of their stroke risk and what they can do to manage it. “Stroke is more common than people think, it kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer, yet many strokes are preventable,” Ms Dunstan said. “Some of the biggest risk factors for stroke are things that we actually have control over. Things like high blood pressure, smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise all increase your risk of stroke. “Of all these risk factors, high blood pressure is the highest and most modifiable risk factor for stroke, and that’s why these checks

are so important. “Last year, Queenslanders suffered more than 9,400 strokes. It is vital we reduce that number by helping people become more aware of their stroke risk and what they can do to lower it. Ipswich is saying “NO” to domestic violence this month. More than 200 people marched through Ipswich to show their support, and the Domestic Violence Action Centre (DVAC) is hosting a series of activities, workshops to promote awareness about preventing and responding to domestic and family violence. The march included a candlelight vigil to commemorate and honour women and children who have lost their lives to homicide. Heather Ellis from the Domestic Violence Action Centre in Ipswich knows firsthand that creating awareness of domestic violence is the first step to changing the culture. “Domestic and family violence has always been treated as a private matter, and perhaps people don’t know how to intervene.” “So it’s important to know where to go, and with the new DV Connect lines and the ‘Trust Your Instincts’ campaign. People can phone 24/7 and get help on preventing violence, how to report it, and what can be done to solve it.” “The sad fact is we still live in a culture that perpetuates the age old belief that women are property to be owned and controlled. Until that mentality changes women will continue to be controlled, beaten and killed.”

So far this year, 34 people have died due to domestic violence or homicide, 15 of those in Queensland. It’s a statistic that needs to change. If you have experienced or witnessed domestic or family violence and would like to talk to someone who will understand ring the Domestic Violence Action Centre on 3816 3000. If you are at risk of being hurt or feel unsafe call police on 000. If you would like support or information after hours call 1800 respect (1800 737 732). If you would like to join a behavior change program in Ipswich call Uniting Care QLD on 07 3816 9600. Clockwise from top: More than 200 people marched through the Ipswich CBD to say “NO” to domestic violence. Those on the front line encountering domestic violence, the Queensland Police show their support for DVAC. Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, who is a strong supporter of anti-violence measures with Heather Ellis and Gabrielle Borggaard, General Manager DVAC.

New intake for ADF Gap Year With the reintroduction of the Australian Defence Force Gap Year program last year, the 2015 intake of Gap Year trainees are now participating in a range of Defence-related jobs including airbase security roles at the RAAF School of Fire and Security (RAAFSFS) at RAAF Base Amberley. The Gap Year program, conducted by the Australian Army and the RAAF, aims to provide an exciting opportunity for young Australians, who have finished year 12 or equivalent, to experience 12 months in the military without further obligation to a longer commitment. Once recruits have completed their initial military training, the graduates then undertake their initial employment training. They will be immersed in the ADF lifestyle while continuing to learn on the job, develop their skills, and be paid a salary of more than $45,000 a year. The ADF Gap Year program was first introduced in 2007 and was regarded as an effective community engagement and recruiting tool. The new program recommenced in January this year, with 60 places for Air Force in airbase security roles, and Army has opportunities for infantry, drivers, administration clerks and supply coordinators. It is anticipated Navy will be able to accommodate Gap Year participants in future years. The program enables high school graduates the opportunity to experience jobs in the ADF and military lifestyle between finishing high school and beginning higher education, which enables them to better decide on a future career in the Australian Defence Force. These young men and women learn practical

and leadership skills, enjoy a healthy and varied lifestyle, and they can make friends for life. While applications for the 2016 Gap Year have closed, program information for 2017 intake can be found at www.defencejobs.gov. au/gapyear later this year. DEFENCE Jet Fuel Exposure Study released The long running investigation into the possible long term health effects of jet fuel and solvents on former F-111 Deseal/Reseal Defence personnel has led to the release of the Jet Fuel Exposure Syndrome (JFES) Study. Defence personnel undertaking deseal/ reseal work have long been concerned over their health outcomes, having worked in the confines of F-111 aircraft fuel tanks stripping back sealant using solvents, then resealing the tanks with compounds. The Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Brown met with F-111 Deseal/Reseal and firefighter representatives to discuss the report and their health concerns ahead of the report being released. “It is important that Air Force provides the most up-to-date health information to our current and former workforce, on the effects of occupational exposure to jet fuel,” Air Marshal Brown said. “I will continue to implement practical measures, such as safe work processes and the use of protective equipment, to minimise exposure to JP8 jet fuel. “It is important to me that our personnel both past and present, have access to this independent research.” Defence’s Senior Physician in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Doctor Ian

Gardner said the study utilised the latest university and medical research technologies into molecular and genetic aspects of cell biology. The study found small but persistent cellular effects many years after exposure. “The study found that while the kerosene component of jet fuel could adversely affect cells, the damage to cellular function is not expected to have immediate or adverse health effects,” Dr Gardner explained. The study did not find any evidence of genetic or chromosomal damage in cells exposed to jet fuel or the deseal/reseal solvents. Dr Gardner explained that a positive finding was that there is no evidence found for the Jet Fuel to cause genetic or chromosomal damage that could lead to cancers. “DVA and Defence are continuing to work on studies such as the 4th Update to the F-111 Mortality and Cancer Incidence Study and the ADF Firefighter Study which are being finalised,” Dr Gardner said. The $3 million JFES study was undertaken by researchers at the Mater Medical Research Institute in Brisbane led by Prof Frank Bowling. The JFES Study resulted from initial research work undertaken by Air Force personnel. The JFES study, and a summary can be downloaded at airforce-gov.au.

Defence project enhances Air Force smart bombs A Defence Project to enhance the Air Force’s ‘smart bombs’ has achieved a significant milestone with the acceptance of the first production set of Australian designed and manufactured range-extending wing kits. Known as the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), manufactured by Boeing, these smart bombs provide an all-weather precision strike capability for combat aircraft such as F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet. Speaking at the delivery of the first production set of rangeextending wing kits, Rear Admiral Tony Dalton said, “This successful project has taken an Australian idea and through an international collaboration, has turned it into a reality.” “These range extending wing kits almost triple the baseline range of the current smart bombs. “These wing kits were developed by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, manufactured by Ferra Engineering under contract to Boeing.” Test and evaluation flight trials of the new extended range smart bomb have been successfully conducted at

the Woomera air weapons test range, with the weapons landing within metres of their designated targets. The first set of production wing kits have been delivered to Air Force by Boeing at Ferra’s Brisbane-based production facility. Boeing to upgrade Super Hornet maintenance trainers Boeing will update two maintenance trainers for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) so they better support the RAAF’s F/A-18F and EA-18G aircraft. Australia is the only nation other than the United States flying F/A-18 Super Hornet fighters and EA-18G Growler airborne electronic attack aircraft. While it operates the two-seat F variant of the Super Hornet, its current trainer configuration is for the singleseat variant. The update will change that while also making Australia’s two Integrated Visual Environment Maintenance Trainers specifically applicable to the RAAF’s EA-18G aircraft. “The trainers need software upgrades to stay current with the aircraft,” said Tom Lavender, manager, Boeing Navy Training program. “Using the same software in both the trainer and the aircraft allows Super Hornet technicians to perform maintenance tasks exactly as they would on the actual aircraft.” The upgraded trainers will support technicians working on both platforms and will provide them with a key tool to qualify as Super Hornet and Growler technicians. “Maintenance training facilities play a key role in the training and skills development of Air Force maintenance staff,” said Air Commodore Michael Kitcher, Director General Capability Planning for Air Force.

“This update is especially important because the new skill-set technicians will require to perform advanced work on the EA-18G Growler ensuring its readiness to support all branches of the Australian Defence Force when it comes into RAAF service.” The work, under a U.S. Navy foreign military sales agreement, will be performed at RAAF Amberley. The upgrades will be complete by the end of 2016. NOW THAT’S

ENTERTAINMENT WITH 97.3 FM’s LOUISE

Hugh Jackman will get his claws into the role of Wolverine just one last time. He told a US talk show:” This will be my last one. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years! I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.” The current release date for the third Wolverine film is March 2, 2017. It’s happening. A fifth Indiana Jones movie has been confirmed — and we’re all hoping it’s nothing like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! BUT there’s no release date attached to it. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said: “[An Indiana Jones film] will one day be made inside this company. When it will happen, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.” Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy; Jurrasic World) has been tipped to pick up Indy’s whip. Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron had some brilliant advice for her younger self. Revealing her words of wisdom in an interview: “I think in general, the conversation would just be about, like, ’chill,’ there’s definitely a period in my twenties where I felt so rushed. Looks like Michael Bay will appease TMNT fans who cried foul over the absence of Casey Jones in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle roboot last year. The hockey mask wearing, sports gear wielding, occasional love interest of April O’Neil was notably absent from the last film but Michael Bay has tweeted a photo of Stephen Amell as Casey Jones for the next flick — Due June 2016. *Could Boba Fett, the Star Wars bounty hunter, be headed for his own origins movie? Despite only ever uttering 4 lines in the franchise (5 if you include the scream) he remains one of the most popular characters. And it’s looking likely that he’ll be the subject of a standalone flick in the next few years. *After 15 seasons, TV show American Idol has been cancelled. It launched the careers of Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood and turned Ryan Seacrest into a household name. There’s just one more season left — and it has Aussie Keith Urban on the judging panel.

*Vance Joy’s song Riptide is now officially the longest charting song in Aria history! It’s been in the top 100 Aria charts since April 2013 — that’s 107 weeks. The previous record was held by Lady Gaga’s Poker face (106 weeks) and I Gotta Feeling Black Eyed Peas (105 weeks). *Jennifer Lawrence has just landed her first major beauty campaign — as the face of Dior Addict lipstick. She’s no stranger to the brand though — having featured in a few Miss Dior promotions — but you can expect to see her all over the makeup counters from September.

MONEY & PROPERTY

MATTERS Taking advantage of low rates BY MARK BOURIS

Even before the Reserve Bank reduced official interest rates recently, borrowers were testing the mortgage market to find the best rates. Figures from Finder.com.au show the big banks still dominate mortgage lending, with more than 83 per cent of new loans. But in March 2015 they lost ground to other lenders. The reason is obvious: none of the big banks’ standard variable mortgage rates are still below 5.3 per cent. That’s a 1 per cent difference between the big banks, and the second-tier lenders. If you have a 25-year mortgage of $400,000, the difference between a variable rate of 5.3 per cent and 4.3 per cent is around $230 a month. I applaud the people who are using the competitive nature of the mortgage market to their advantage. It’s only by becoming informed and then acting, that you can secure the best deal. Low rates give you an opportunity to put more money in your pocket and not the banks. It also allows you the benefit of creating a rate ‘buffer’ for when rates start to rise. When interest rates move there’s no guarantee that

it’s by a quarter of a per cent each month. An upward movement could be in greater leaps, giving people with large mortgages a bit of ‘rate shock’. By reviewing your statement, shopping around and ensuring you have the lowest possible rate – you’ll be in the best position for when a rate rise occurs. So what should you look for to secure the best mortgage? There’s a few things to remember beyond simply the amount of interest charged on a loan. The service proposition is one: a mortgage is a large, important debt and most borrowers find they not only find better interest rates with second-tier lenders, but also one-onone servicing, faster approvals and decisions, and more flexibility in dealing with their circumstances. Second-tier lenders also have a reputation for charging lower fees than the big banks, largely because they have smaller overheads in their business. A no-frills loan is excellent for first home buyers and people on a budget, but an offset account home loan might be better if you’re trying to build equity fast, and a line of credit facility is good for experienced borrowers. If you’re buying an investment property, an interest-only loan might be the best pick. When you’re looking around for a better home loan deal, first give your current lender a chance to match the best rate you’ve found: it’s always worth a go. And remember that mortgage brokers are an excellent way to access the market if you don’t have the time, the latest knowledge or the expertise. Only 200 have been produced — for a premium of just $1750 over the Manufacturer’s List Price* (MLP) of the entry level XV, meaning the special edition is just $30,740*. Subaru Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: “Unique colours have been an inherent part of the XV range since launch. A much-copied orange, a vibrant green and now a stand-out yellow. These colours have not only proven to be popular with our younger XV buyers, they have broad appeal. “Plus with a limited run of only 200 vehicles the long term value of this particular XV is likely to be very, very strong. It is competitively priced and comprehensively equipped with the inclusion of leather trim interior and heated seats over the entry level. We don’t envisage these will last long.” The special edition comes after Subaru recently revised XV pricing across the entire 2015 line-up.
