Well Summer certainly doesn’t seem to want to give up on us, with this warm weather carrying on for what seems like forever! But take heart, as Easter isn’t far away, and for some reason, don’t ask me why or how, it ALWAYS gets cool after Easter. Why is that? Does anyone know? Please let me know as it’s been doing my head in for years. Any boffins know? Dressing ‘Cinderella’ STAR CHAT CELEBRITY

Sandy Powell is the Costume Designer on the new Disney movie ‘Cinderella’. A three time Academy Award winner for her work on ‘The Young Victoria’, ‘The Aviator’ and ‘Shakespeare in Love’, along with being nominated seven other times for work on movies that include ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘Hugo’ and more, we picked her brains on what it is like facing the challenge of bringing a classic fairy tale to life, all through costume. Despite her ridiculously hectic schedule in Hollywood, Sandy emailed us back and answered some of our questions.

Q: What drew you to the project and what preparation was involved? A: I’ve spent many years designing costumes for men in men’s films, so I was excited about the prospect of doing a film that was so female focused. I began my research almost two years before we started shooting, and one of the very first things I did was look at setting it in different periods. We looked at everything from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and kept coming back to the 19th century, which had a sort of fairy tale look to it. Eventually we decided it would be a lot more interesting if it wasn’t strictly 19th century but more of a 1940s version of it instead. I presented (director) Kenneth Branagh with my ideas and we talked in great depth about each character, and as we developed costumes I would show him the fitting pictures so he could see what was happening as we went along. We approached the film as one would approach a storybook or a picture book for children: very colorful and vivid with fairly easy references as to who is good and who is wicked. Q: How do the costumes in the film differ from those in the animated version? A: I thought I’d forgotten all about Disney’s animated film until I had designed this “Cinderella” and saw there were quite a few

similarities. I think they were unintentional, but maybe they were subliminal. In the animation, nobody changes their clothes much. In our film, they change every five minutes. For Cinderella’s daily attire I didn’t want to do the rags and patchwork that most people remember from the animated film, so we put her in a dress which was one she would have worn back in happier times before the death of her Father. The dress was influenced by a 1920s floral print. The whole idea behind the stepsisters is that they weren’t physically ugly: they are beautiful but vain and ugly inside. If we were to succeed in making them ugly, I knew they had to be silly, so I decided to dress them identically as Disney did in the animated film, a bit like friends who go out shopping and get the same thing but in different colors. Cate Blanchett was the first person cast in the film, so I always had her in mind when designing the stepmother’s costumes. The look I was going for was Joan Crawford or Marlene Dietrich does Victorian and Cate has such incredible poise. She wears every outfit beautifully. It’s a designer’s dream really, because she is one of the greatest people there is to dress. There are only a handful of actors that you can throw anything on and they look fabulous, and she is one of them.

Q: What was involved in designing the glass slipper? A: I looked at lots of different possibilities of how to do a glass shoe, and realized the most important thing was that it had to sparkle, which meant that it had to be made of crystal because glass would not sparkle. I knew the shape of the shoe that I wanted, which was in fact based on an original shoe from the 1890s that I found in a Northampton show museum…the shoe was impossibly tiny with a five-inch heel and was simply elegant. But I soon realized that the only way we could even attempt to make a crystal shoe was with the help of Swarovski. When we approached them they were, of course, up to the challenge, and thus began a collaboration that took place over months and months with numerous trials and tests. The day they showed us the shoe was incredible actually…it was a huge relief and very exciting. No one was even able to wear it because crystal has no movement, so it was used as the shoe that all the women in the Kingdom try on. Q: The ballroom scene has so many costumes on screen, how did you plan out that scene? A: We wanted everything to be as colorful as possible. This is a fairy tale, and if we don’t treat it with color then it’s pointless, and that’s what’s been really fun. So the whole ballroom is an explosion of color, sumptuous, rich, and in some cases, really over the top, as many of the guests are there to impress, and hopefully marry, the Prince, and we’ve spent months creating this vast array of colors, looks and styles. We also wanted to have an element of international flavor, so we dressed princesses from China, Japan, India, Africa and Russia. Disney’s Cinderella opens in cinemas from March 26th.

Jets kick off 2015 season By Michael Dunn The Luxury Paints Ipswich Jets Rugby League team have launched into the 2015 Intrust Cup season, with a hard fought match against arch rivals Wynnum Manly. Just like the semi-final last year, it all looked lost for Wynnum Manly throughout their round one clash against the Ipswich Jets. Wynnum were behind for the close to the full 80 minutes, yet somehow they found a way – this time through a brilliant last ditch play which saw Daniel Ogden score his second try to seal another bit of heartbreak for the Jets courtesy of the Seagulls. The Jets had a late line up change with Broncos’ contracted player Daniel Vidot coming into the Ipswich line-up for Kurtis Lingwoodock. The game started in hot conditions with both sides guilty of plenty of dropped ball and wrong options. It was the Jets who first took the points on offer through Nemani Valekapa who had made several dangerous runs down his left side. Wes Conlon failed to convert but in the 30th minute the Jets had broken through for a 4-0 lead. Just before half time Marmin Barba brought up his 200th Intrust Super Cup point through his 30th try, this time Conlon converted to send the Jets to half time up 10-0 and starting to gain some confidence. The confidence was eroded after half time when Wynnum’s new recruit Patrick Templeman ran straight through the Jets’ defence to score under the posts and have Wynnum back in the contest at 10-6. The Jets suffered an injury blow to Barba who had to be carried off the field. Wynnum were able to take advantage of a Jets’ line up in disarray and Brendan Gibb scored for the Seagulls to lock up the game at 10-10. 2 Ipswich Life

The Jets had an answer in Conlon who rolled the dice and went for the intercept with Wynnum attacking; the result was a 100m try to Conlon who converted try to see the Ipswich Jets flying at 16-10 with 25 minutes to go. Ogden then stood up and scored out wide after some quick hands saw the fullback join the backline movement to finish off his side’s good work. The Jets were now in front 16-14 with nine minutes to play after goal-kicker Matt Seamark again uncharacteristically pushed the conversion wide. The error-riddled last nine minutes saw Wynnum stay in the contest and give themselves the best chance of winning when the cross field kick found that man Ogden. The Seagulls had inflicted another round one loss on the Jets, who haven’t started a season with a win since 2010. From top: Kurt Capewell was a star for the Jets. Film Festival for Youth 2015 The portal is now open for youth of Ipswich to take part in the 3rd annual Ipswich Film Festival for Youth (IFFY), which each year gets bigger and more popular. Councillor Sheila Ireland said since the launch in 2013 IFFY had continued to grow and develop a keen following amongst younger residents of Ipswich. Cr Ireland said IFFY participants now have until October 2nd to film, lodge their entries in this year’s competition on the theme “Hero”. “We believe our young writers and directors will find challenging and interesting ways to interpret this theme,” she said. “From superheroes to community heroes to the unsung ones in our own lives there are numerous ways in which this theme could be highlighted. “We are already looking forward to seeing what the IFFY entrants produce as there has been some wonderfully creative entries submitted over the past two years. “There is an enormous amount of talented young people in Ipswich and it will be interesting to see what they deliver.” Cr Ireland said IFFY would feature a new category this year, which is ‘Best Contribution by a School’. “We are inviting local schools to work with their students to submit an entry for IFFY and be part of this special new category.” Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said council would again run IFFY in partnership with a number of sponsors. “Limelight Cinemas, Screen Queensland, Channel 9 and The University of Southern Queensland’s Film and TV Faculty will again be supporting IFFY,” Cr Pisasale said. “They were all a special part of IFFY in 2014 and we look forward to joining forces with these sponsors to find Ipswich’s answer to famous Hollywood director Steven Spielberg. “You can put yourself in the running for one of the great awards on offer simply by having a go and lodging an entry.

Cr Pisasale said IFFY would be judged from October 2 to 21 with the winners to be announced on November 13. He said the awards’ presentation would once again take the form of a red carpet event during which shortlisted films would be showcased on the big screen and an opportunity provided for entrants to meet the judges, sponsors and other fellow film makers. CITY VIBE Charge of Beersheba to be re-enacted Toogoolawah RSL Sub-branch has received $5,500 from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program to help it hold a historical re-enactment of the‘’ - the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade’s famous mounted charge at the Battle of Gaza in 1917. The re-enactment will be held at the Toogoolawah Showgrounds. “The endeavours of the Australian Light Horse during the First World War is of particular significance in Toogoolawah”, said the Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann. “Many of its members were drawn from the town and across the Somerset Region. Decendants of those soldiers continue to reside in the area today”. Between 2014 and 2018, Australia commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the First World War. On April 25 this year we mark the centenary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli. Mr Neumann said the former Federal Labor Government created the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program to assist communities decide how to best commemorate the Anzac Centenary locally. “The First World War and the original Anzacs helped forge our national identity and define our national character,” Mr Neumann said.

Busy times in Blair It’s been another busy week around the Blair electorate. During the most recent Parliamentary sitting week, I spoke against the Abbott Government’s cruel cuts that will hurt families in Ipswich and the Somerset Region. These cuts will make it harder for our young people to find and keep jobs and harder for community organisations such as ‘Care and Concern’ in Esk to help those in need in our community. On Friday, I was delighted to participate in Ipswich East State School’s leadership induction ceremony. I was impressed by the school’s new student leaders and wish them well for the year ahead. On Saturday morning, I met with constituents at my mobile office at the Miners Diner in Ebbw Vale – my 125th mobile office in Blair since the last Federal election. Both the conversation and coffee were excellent. Later I attended the opening of Ipswich Men’s Shed ‘Grand Awning’ at Bundamba. Keeping it local, I’ve commissioned Men’s Shed to make new wooden frames for my mobile office signs and anticipate their firstrate work. In the afternoon, I attended an Ipswich TAFE graduation ceremony followed by the Jets v Seagulls match at North Ipswich Reserve. Congratulations to the new graduates and commiserations to the Jets who were pipped at the post! Later I joined the festivities at the Ipswich City Bulls season launch at Brassall. On Sunday evening, I was privileged to attend and give a prayer at the Bundamba Salvation Army’s ecumenical church service marking the Anzac Centenary. Reverend Bob Walker spoke splendidly about peace, justice and service. Good fellowship was enjoyed over supper afterwards. Another busy week in our vibrant and diverse community. A seminal study in individual and societal moral breakdown and decay. 5. City By The Sea (2002) Set on New York’s Long Island, whose real life municipal slogan is Civitas Ad Mare – Latin for “The City by the Sea” – at it’s core this film is a family drama that depicts the relationship between a detective and his son who has been accused of murder. Cost $40 million to make but only made back $30 million so not one of his better known roles but poignant, memorable and very De Niro nonetheless. Open up their future at The Springfield Anglican College The 2015 school year has commenced in a very positive manner for The Springfield Anglican College. For the first time, student enrolment, from Kindergarten to Year Twelve, has risen above 900 students, with very strong demand for places in Kindergarten, Prep and Year Seven in particular. On the Secondary Campus, the completion of three major building projects; a Creative Arts Precinct, Year Seven classrooms and change rooms for sport, have added greatly to the facilities available to students. In the case of the Creative Arts Precinct, purpose built Music, Dance, Drama, Art and Instrumental Music areas now provide students with a much broader range of learning opportunities than previously available and there is great excitement among the community with the College production of the Musical ‘Oliver’ in August. On the Primary Campus, the completion of a Dance room during Term One aims to support the great interest in Dance, both curricular and extra-curricular, of students on the Primary Campus. One of the key ambitions of the College is to provide all students with the individual attention they deserve. Twelve participate in The Associated Schools competition each Saturday, playing against other independent schools from across the Brisbane region. Students also have great opportunity to achieve representative honours. Last year, for example, 65 students experienced success at either Regional, State or National level; 33 at Regional, 24 at State and 8 at National, which is exceptional for a College with approximately 500 students in Years Four to Twelve. Reduce the ill effects from Mozzie bites The recent diagnosis of over 60 Ipswich residents with Ross River Fever has increased the urgency for Ipswich residents to ensure their homes are not breeding sites for mosquitoes. Ross River Fever is a very serious and debilitating illness. Ross River Fever causes joint swelling, fever and nausea that can last up to eight weeks and while the disease is not contagious it can lead to hospitalisation. “This unusually high number of diagnoses is not restricted to Ipswich and is occurring across South East Queensland,” said Cr Andrew Antoniolli. “The spike is clearly linked to recent major weather events along the coast. Council officers are liaising with Queensland Health and have determined an action plan to stop the spread of this disease in Ipswich. “We are constantly mapping sites of mosquito activity and spraying to swiftly neutralise the threat. “But control of pests is a matter for the whole community and residents can take some simple measures around the home to reduce mosquito populations at home.”

Marburg to host Easter Sunday racing event Everyone is invited to celebrate Easter at Marburg Showgrounds, one of the best small country harness racing tracks in Australia. The 2015 Marburg Easter Sunday Country Cups at the Marburg Showgrounds on April 5. The Marburg Pacing Association has held an Easter racing event at the Marburg Showgrounds for more than 25 years. The Easter Sunday event is an annual event which is aimed at local and surrounding communities to provide a fun family environment for people of all ages to enjoy harness racing, competitions and family appropriate entertainment, food and drinks. The event particularly attracts older members of the community who remember the show racing era. Last year’s event attracted more than 1000 participants. The eight race program will feature cups races, mini trotters, displays, fun events and on-track competitions. The feature races will be the City of Ipswich

Abnormal neck curves cause increased tissue stress which provides the basis for degenerative joint disease (Clinical Biomechanics 2001;16;276-84). A neck curve of 30°– 40° is a protective window against neck pain, whilst less than 30° is a risk factor for neck pain and less than 20° is a risk factor for chronic neck pain (Spine 2004;29(22):2485-92). SHOPPING New shopping centre to open in Augustine Heights A new shopping centre will commence work next month as Springfield and Augustine Heights residents will soon be able to shop, dine and enjoy new local stores at the corner of Augusta Parkway and Leon Capra Drive. Ipswich Planning and Development Committee Chairman Councillor Paul Tully said council had approved the new local centre to be called ‘Augusta Village’ with the main access from Leon Capra Drive. The shopping centre’s key retailer will be a 645m2 fresh food market, which will be surrounded by another nine local retail outlets. “Retailers will vary with suitable shop sizes for a hairdresser, bakery, bottle shop and restaurants, as well as seven outdoor dining areas included in the plans,” Cr. Tully said. The outdoor dining spaces would be under the main roof of the development. “Outdoor dining creates such a relaxing atmosphere and I can see people enjoying a Sunday morning breakfast or weekend dinner at Augusta Village,” Cr Tully said. “An acoustic barrier will be constructed on the western and southern building facades with the development incorporating 79 parking spaces.” Traffic coming into Augusta Village will be from Leon Capra Drive and the road will be widened to incorporate a right turn lane. Toilet facilities, including facilities for children would also be provided during operating hours of 6am to 10pm seven days a week. “This development will be a major boost for Ipswich’s eastern suburbs with handy access from Redbank Plains, Bellbird Park and the Centenary Highway.”

Air Force rocks Avalon Air Show Fast jets roared over Avalon Airfield west of Melbourne earlier this month as the RAAF’s F/A18F Super Hornets and ‘Classic’ Hornets put on an impressive display of air power, along with other aircraft such as the KC-30A Air Refueller, C-17A ‘Globemaster III’, and the E-7A ‘Wedgetail’. The Avalon Air Show served as the major showcase of Air Force capabilities for the year, and provided the venue to show new aircraft types to the general public. After three weekdays of trade shows, the public days over the weekend provided a feast of air show entertainment, with historical flypasts of aircraft of the past, stunt flying and spectacular formation flying. The Young Diggers Dog Squad A second chance for soldiers, families and dogs The Defence Bank Foundation is an independent charity established to help injured, wounded and disadvantaged serving and former Australian Defence Force members and their families. The Defence Bank Foundation, in partnership with the Young Diggers Dog Squad is providing a unique program. The Young Diggers Dog Squad is training rescued dogs to become Assistance Dogs to support the rehabilitation of our serving and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members who are dealing with PostTraumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). This program is helping more than just the individuals. The Dog Squad helps Defence families to better cope with the effects of PTSD and saves the lives of abandoned dogs. The Dog Squad is run entirely by the volunteers at Young Diggers and they need people like you to Donate or Sponsor a Dog to continue running the program. You are also helping save these abandoned dogs which are rescued from animal shelters. The dogs have proven to significantly improve their owner’s well-being and rehabilitation. Assistance Dogs help serving and ex-serving ADF members and their families better cope with the stresses and difficulties when

recovering from a wound or injury (including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). A dog can help the individual suffering a disability, to reduce the apprehension and fear of facing social interactions by being a constant companion and giving the individual back their independence. The KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft has a new lease of life, following acceptance of the Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) capability. This is an important milestone for the KC-30A, as the ARBS system is needed to refuel aircraft such as the E-7A ‘Wedgetail’ and other aircraft types needing the boom system. The KC-30A project had been managed as a Project of Concern since 2010 due to delays in delivery of fully functioning aircraft. Defence has formally accepted the capability. The absence of the boom capability has not hampered 33 Squadron operations to a great extent, with the KC-30A conducting hoseand-drogue refuelling activities since 2011. In fact, one KC-30A is currently deployed on operations in the Middle East, refuelling RAAF

F/A-18F Super Hornets and other Coalition combat aircraft. The RAAF has accepted five aircraft to date, now operating out of home base at RAAF Amberley. Acceptance of the ARBS paves the way for the progressive introduction of the boom in-flight refuelling capability leading ultimately to Defence declaring Final Operational Capability for the KC-30A fleet. Operational evaluation of the ARBS is not expected to bring any further suprises in operational performance. Apart from air refuelling the KC-30A has an airlift capability making it a multirole aircraft. One of the biggest myths and misconceptions in beer is that only men drink the stuff! With the craft beer market kicking goals left right and centre this couldn’t be more wrong, women as a demographic of craft beer drinkers is rising quicker than their male counterparts. This rise in female craft beer drinkers means that women have more of a say in setting trends and determining which beers appear on tap in venues. Two pioneers of craft beer in Australia are Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen, now these names may not sound familiar, it will make more sense when I tell you that these two lovely ladies are the owners and brewers at Two Birds Brewing, which is one of Australia’s fastest growing craft beer brands. Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen grew up and met in Perth over 16 years ago, but it took a two-week tour of the West Coast of the US in 2010 for them to realise how much they had in common. MATTERS Interest in Interest BY MARK BOURIS

Interest-only versus Principal & Interest The strength of the investment property market has brought with it a rise in interestonly loans, and several government agencies have voiced concern about interest-only lending. But what’s the problem? Most borrowers have a principal & interest (P&I) loan on their primary place of residence. A P&I loan allocates some of the mortgage repayment to the principal loan amount and some to the interest accruing from the principal. So if the repayment schedule is adhered to, the loan is fully paid-out over the agreed term. In an interest-only loan, the lender writes a standard mortgage but agrees to a term in which the borrower pays only the interest, which means monthly repayments are lower than a P&I loan. Over the term of the interestonly loan, the loan principal is unchanged. Typically the interest-only term is five years, with an option to extend five years. After the interest-only term the loan reverts to a standard P&I loan, but the repayments are amortised over the remaining years. So if you take a five-year interest-only term in a 25-year mortgage, when the loan reverts your subsequent repayments are for a 20-year P&I

mortgage. If you extend the interest-only loan for another five years, after it reverts the remainder of your 25-year loan becomes a 15year P&I mortgage. When the loan reverts to a P&I loan, the repayments usually rise and so the concerns voiced about these loans are mostly about affordability. This complaint suggests that borrowers are taking interest-only loans so they can afford the repayments on larger loans than they could afford if they were P&I. But the loans shouldn’t be taken for affordability reasons. They are best used for investing in property, and they are most effective where there’s advice and tax planning accompanying them. In best practice, this is how an interest-only loan is used: A couple with a P&I loan on their primary place of residence, borrow to buy an investment property.
