Danielle Cormack: star of ‘Rake’

Danielle Cormack talks about the much anticipated new series of ABC’s ‘Rake’ and also about life after ‘Xena’ – a show which keeps her in demand on the Sci-Fi Convention circuit, years after it finished. Like many of ‘our’ best actors (including Russell Crowe), Danielle Cormack is unashamedly a proud Kiwi working in Australia, and loving it. Known initially for her work on ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ which takes her around the world to sci-fi conventions even today, Cormack is also recognised for her role in ‘Underbelly Razor’, Foxtel’s ‘Wentworth’, and most of all ‘Rake’, which returns series next week on ABC1. Starring Richard Roxburgh as the lead character, and with guest stars over previous seasons like Sam Neill, Rachel Griffiths and Hugo Weaving, it’s a show bursting with talent. In this season, her third as Scarlet Engels, Cormack plays a character that is struggling to balance work, a husband, children and a home. In short, someone we can all relate to. “When I went for this show I thought ‘I’m not going to get the role’ but I wanted to read for it,” Cormack said during filming in Melbourne. “I’ve never read a script like it…just brilliant. Then I got a call from the casting director and he asked me to put in another video, as I did it from the neck up, and that’s when I had to come clean that I was eight months pregnant. Then suddenly I was part of this amazing project with such an incredible cast. “ Talking of the cast, it’s a show that has retained all the original cast, and attracts the most amazing guest stars. What is it about this

show that gets such talent? “Why did everyone come back? That’s easy, its impossible to say no to this show. I think that goes for everyone. We all love this story, this character of Cleaver Greene (Roxburgh), and we want to see his story. We as characters are just orbiting around him, and at the same time we are given these gems of storylines. “I didn’t even know it was going to 8.30 on Sunday nights, I’ve had my head in prison for several weeks working on ‘Wentworth’. The ABC has always backed this show and nobody has ever said it’s mediocre...the Australian public just seems to love it.” Danielle starred in the cult show ‘Xena’ which was filmed in her native New Zealand, “Its funny you ask about Xena, that was years ago and my housing situation is very thankful for those conventions around the world. They helped to pay off my house as they can be very lucrative for a struggling actor! “I haven’t done them for a few years but I’ve been asked to do a big one in Pasadena in the US, but I can’t due to filming commitments. They are so much fun, and I get to see other people from shows I’ve done, so its great to catch up, especially on a show like Xena. I find it intriguing that people relate to a show so much that they are genuinely affected by a TV show!

“Its like my character of Scarlet in Rake, people are genuinely touched by her character and how she balances everything. They can totally relate to her situation. “Anyone living in that state of being torn between work, children, husband, home…. she’s not the epitome of them at this point in her life. For me I think sometimes whether that has been a constant for someone and then things shift, the world becomes a bit more confusing. They want to maintain control. “For her, to find out her husband is having a fling…..things really start falling apart for her, which can happen when people try to be too controlling.” Cormack will next be seen in the second series of ‘Wentworth’ for Foxtel, the remake of the classic show ‘Prisoner’ which has been a bit hit all over the world, especially the UK. “The English have adopted it like they did the original Prisoner, its been sold to several countries now along with the format. “On set we have people walking around taking notes…Germany has started their own version, and I think Norway too, but the UK are very keen to get the second series on air over there. Often I have to do live tweets at the request of the UK tv channel when I’m filming.” Rake Series 3 begins Sunday February 8th on ABC1 at 8.30pm.

Vietnamese Summer Salad Happy bright and cheery 2014 readers, and although I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas/New Year period where we cooked up a festive feast for family and friends, I’ve been looking forward to sharing new recipes with you. \Recently we enjoyed eating out at a night market, with a variety of world flavours to entice all but I was craving something fresh, light and absolutely delish and ended up choosing Vietnamese cuisine. Here’s my version of what I enjoyed that night and so can you. Vietnamese Summer Salad The Dressing 60g Sugar 1Tbsp Water 2 Tbsp Fish Sauce ½ Tbsp Lime Juice (freshly squeezed) 1 Garlic Clove (finely diced or minced) 1 Red Chilli, (seedless & chopped finely) The Salad ½ Wombok Cabbage (finely shredded) 2 Cups Bean Sprouts 1 Carrot (finely shredded) 1 Cup Coriander (chopped) 1 Cup Mint Leaves (chopped) 100g Fried Egg Noodles Method In a small saucepan add your sugar, water and a few drops of the lime juice, (the lime juice stops your sugar from re-crystalising). Stir over a medium heat until the sugar has melted and bring to the boil. Allow the syrup to thicken, then remove from the heat and pour into a small bowl. Add the fish sauce and mix well. Finally add the remaining lime juice, mix well, add garlic and chilli. Set aside to completely cool. Toss all the salad ingredients together in a bowl. Pour over the earlier prepared dressing and mix through. Enjoy immediately. You can also add to it shredded poached chicken but the spicy, sweet, sour and salty flavours make this salad a taste sensation.

Couples expecting their first baby wanted for free program The call is out for Ipswich couples expecting their first child to attend a free study program designed to help take the pressure of first time parents, sponsored by the University of Queensland. Building on the highly acclaimed Triple P — Positive Parenting Program, Baby Triple P is designed to offer new parents ideas and ongoing support so they can navigate potential problems. “Parents will learn how to settle their baby, recognise a baby’s signals such as tired signs, recognise milestones and how to look after themselves as well as their relationship with their partner,’’ Triple P researcher Mandy Mihelic said. It builds on the principals of Triple P developed more than 30 years by Prof Matt Sanders by helping parents understand what is normal and usual behaviour for a newborn and by developing strategies to deal with situations such as a hard-to-console infant. “The general feedback we have from parents who have participated has been overwhelmingly positive,’’ Ms Mihelic said. “They like the fact that the program helps them wade through all the conflicting information about parenting a newborn by focusing on strategies that are evidence-based. “This has been trialled before, but we are now looking at different population areas, and looking at other areas like Ipswich. The Ipswich couples will be able to attend sessions in Ipswich, they won’t need to go to St.Lucia. “The course will cover parenting skills, baby development, and positive parenting skills focusing on affection and praise. Plus we’ll talk about how to look after yourself as a parent, and how to look after your relationship. There is a lot of stress involved in being new parents, its one thing that isn’t talked about much during all the excitement of your first child,” Mandy said. Once couples qualify for the program, there’s no cost, everything is provided but you just need to be over 18 and between 20 and 35 weeks with your first baby at the time of the course. “Most classes for pregnancy cover just the birth, but there isn’t anything that covers how a baby affects your relationship. If we find significant results, it is hoped that this program

can be expanded to all parents.” Flinders View couple Ying-Tai and Melissa Li, along with their new daughter Lilly are going through what is commonly known as ‘The Adjustment’, that being the first six weeks of a baby’s life which turns the lives of the parents on its head, and its something that any parent can relate to. “We went to the Ipswich Hospital and did the classes there, and of course many people gave us their tips,” new father Ying-Tai said, “but it comes down to what we feel is right. We take everyone’s stories, but it’s all a journey for us, and we have to learn from our mistakes. Every baby is different, and it’s been good, but it’s a very steep learning curve.” “If this was around when I was pregnant it would have been great,” Melisa added. “I have a friend who went through post natal depression, and a lot of things like that isn’t explained during standard classes.” The Baby Triple P program consists of four two-hour sessions in a group format with three to six couples followed by four followup phone sessions six weeks after the baby’s birth. Couples that are between weeks 20 and 35 pregnant and are expecting their first baby are invited to go to the Baby Triple P website and register their interest. Participation and all materials are free of charge for the duration of this study. Celebrate this Australia Day Each year I have the pleasure of attending our local Australia Day ceremonies and welcoming of new citizens as part of our annual Australia Day celebrations. This year Ipswich welcomed more than 270 new citizens over three different ceremonies, while the Somerset welcomed nine new citizens at their annual ceremony in Esk. New citizens ranging in age from 2 to 80 and coming from 53 different countries were part of the expected 14,000 people from all over the world who attended special ceremonies to become Australian Citizens in Queensland on Australia Day. Australia Day is the most popular day of the year to become a citizen. More than four million people from 200 countries have chosen to become Australian citizens since the first citizenship ceremony in 1949, including more than one million in the past decade and close to 100,000 in the past year.

Becoming an Australian citizen is a significant step that shows commitment and loyalty to this great nation. Australia Day provides an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on what it is to be Australian and the privileges and responsibilities of Australian citizenship and affirm their commitment to Australia by making the Australian citizenship affirmation. Warm regards, Shayne Neumann Member for Blair

The 5/15 Challenge Here’s another 5/15 recipe from home cooking affectionado Lynette Duffy after we gave her a challenge to give us a recipe with only FIVE ingredients that anyone could cook in FIFTEEN minutes! Ipswich Life is a fan of fast, easy to cook meals, and Lynette came up with this in just a couple of days. What do you think? Try it, and let us know what you think! Email: Darren@ strikepublications.com.au Apple Crumble 6 Granny Smith apples 1 cup plain flour 2 cups quick rolled oats ½ cup brown sugar ½ cup water Peel and core the apples. Chop and place in a vented microwave container that can be used for serving as well. Microwave on high for 5 minutes. While the apples are cooking, place the flour, oats and sugar in a bowl combining well. Add the water and mix to form a crumble. Remove the apples from the microwave and place the crumble mix on top. Return to the microwave and cook for 5 minutes. Serve. Variations Tinned apples can replace the fresh apples. I like to use Ardmona 800 gram can of pie apple, as these have no added sugar. Apples can be replaced with pears or any stone fruits. Sultanas, fresh or frozen berries may also be added to the fruit mix. Butter can replace the water but this will make it high fat so be careful if you have any health issues. This can be served with low fat and sugar icecream, cream or yoghurt.

First building rises in Ecco Ripley Showing the shape of things to come, the first building has gone up in the new Ecco Ripley estate, with the Sales and Information Centre frame constructed onsite in a single day. Designed and constructed by Sekisui House, the innovative pre-engineered timber frame made with glue-laminated timber and metal joints produce a highly durable and sustainable frame ensuring it will last for generations. Frank Galvin Ecco Ripley Development Manager said the sales and information centre would be completed by April 2014. “Because of the frame design, it was able to be assembled onsite in just 4 hours,” Mr Galvin said. “Now that the frame is up, the Sekisui House construction team will be spending the next few months completing the remainder of the building. “The Sales and Information Centre will also feature geo-thermal air-conditioning which aims reduce air conditioning energy use by up to 60 percent, as well as solar power and a rain water tank. “We’ve chosen the triple-electro-coated metal joint framing system because of its durability, its sustainability credentials and to demonstrate our Sekisui House innovation.” Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed the achievement of this major milestone, saying he was pleased to see the next stage of development at Ecco Ripley. “This is the first building in Ecco Ripley, and I’m pleased to see Sekisui House leading the way in the development of the Ripley Valley growth corridor,” Mayor Pisasale said. “The development of Ripley Valley will have economic benefits for the people of Ipswich as construction ramps

up, and local employment opportunities are realised.” Sekisui House is master planning 194 hectares within the Ripley Valley, which will include a vibrant retail and commercial town centre and approximately 4,000 homes. Stage 1 of Ecco Ripley will launch in May. Ecco Ripley is a part of the broader Ripley Valley growth corridor, which the State Government has earmarked to become one of Australia’s largest master-planned communities. “As the first residential development within the Ripley Valley we are expecting strong interest from the community when we launch sales later this year,” Mr Galvin said. Good times.... I hope everyone had a happy New Year and is just as excited about 2014 as we are. Firstly I would like to welcome Ipswich’s newest Australian Citizens who took their oaths in a special ceremony during Australia Day celebrations. Our newest residents come from all over the world and we are proud to have them in our city that celebrates people of all ages, abilities and nationalities. We also recently held the 2014 Ipswich Australia Day Awards, celebrating the people in our community that go above and beyond. Whether it is helping others or outstanding achievers, it was a privilege to meet amazing people from our city. There were so many deserving entrants and everyone should be proud that they were nominated by a friend, neighbour, work colleague or family member who saw your hard work and felt you deserved recognition. If you know someone who you think should be nominated for an Ipswich Australia Day Award, keep an eye out on council’s website for nomination details later this year. If you missed the first Movies in the Park for 2014 last weekend, the good news is we have another one on February 1. Come along to Robelle Domain from 6.30pm for a screening of Despicable Me 2. Bring along your picnic blanket or a camp chair and enjoy a free family movie under the stars. Visit council’s website www.ipswich.qld. gov.au for the full list of movie dates and locations.

REVIEW: Rocky Horror still packs a musical punch There aren’t too many shows that can still pack in an audience and have them dancing in the aisles after forty one years, but that’s what you can expect with the latest production of The Rocky Horror Show which is now on at QPAC. By Darren Hallesy Written in 1973 by Richard O’Brien, it was a fun, unashamed, energetic yet catchy piece of entertainment that was supposed to only run for three weeks in London, but then went on to notch up 2,960 performances before closing in 1980. With the cult movie released in 1975 and constant performances all over the world, the show refuses to die, and for the first time in Australia since 2008, its back, and it seems Australia’s love affair with the show hasn’t waned. In fact, its reaching a whole new generation. Rocky Horror is the story of Brad and Janet, a newly engaged couple who seek help after breaking down…..oh you know the story, why am I even bothering to tell you? You know the songs, you know the movie, and you know exactly what we mean when we say ‘Pelvic Thrust’. Right. Let’s move on. This 2103 production stars forty eight year old Craig McLachlan, who last played the role in his mid-twenties, and several things become clear in his role as Frank-N-Furter. He’s in fantastic shape, having a ball and you can come along with him for the ride. Its hard to see him as ABC’s Dr Blake after seeing him in this, but that’s just the kind of versatility he’s brought to his whole career. He brings an air of ‘expect the unexpected’ whenever he’s on stage. Christie Whelan Browne and Tim Maddren play Janet and Brad, and they carry the

4 IPSWICHLIFE

show until the appearance of Riff Raff (Kristian Lavercome) and Magenta (Erika Haynetz) when the pace really picks up. All hell breaks loose before your eyes, with songs like Time Warp, and Sweet Transvestite which are guaranteed to get you involved in the show as McLachlan hams it up and relishes in the attention. The sex scenes at the start of Act II are cleverly done with a vertical bed, which allows the actors to lift the comedy and raunchiness of it all. While it’s a small cast, and nothing on the scale of something like ‘Wicked’, this production of Rocky Horror delivers in all the areas you want it to. Its sexy (not one for the kiddies), raunchy, outrageous, kitsch, tacky, funny and in short, just what you expect. If you’ve never seen Rocky Horror on stage, you have to experience it live and see what all the fuss is about. If you’ve seen it before….you know you already want to see it again. It’s impossible to not have fun with this show. If there’s two things you’ll walk away with it’s a renewed love for a show that has some of the best, most catchy songs ever written for the stage….and that Craig McLachlan is a national treasure. Long may he reign. Give yourself over to absolute pleasure. The Rocky Horror Show is on now at QPAC until February 9 before moving on to Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne.

With kids going back to school this week, it’s a good time to consider their eyesight, which in many cases can hold them back from learning. Good vision is essential for a child to reach their full potential. More that 80 per cent of the information children receive about the world comes through the eyes. Protecting a child’s vision includes being aware of the symptoms that indicate an immediate problem as well as putting in place preventative measures. There are many clues to vision problems in children. Blinking, rubbing the eyes, holding a book very close to read it, and closing one eye to look at things are some of the things to look out for. Mayor welcomes Chinese students A group of Chinese students, followed by a film crew dropped into Ipswich recently when several students of a study tour were welcomed to our city by Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School including Ipswich Junior Grammar School and Mayor Paul Pisasale. The students, all from Shanghai, are constantly shadowed by two TV crews who are filming their tour for a TV show to air in China which will showcase the City of Ipswich, and several locations around the state. All the students, aged between seven and fifteen, spent seven days in Ipswich, learning English, and Australian culture. They also visited tourist attractions in Brisbane, and on the Gold Coast. GLC Group focuses on sending study tours abroad to Australia, Finland and the United States, and Edwin Lee is the Chairman of GLC. He is a personal friend of Madam Gong, Deputy Magistrate of The People’s Government of Bo Xing County, and she will also be visiting Ipswich later this year. Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School including Ipswich Junior Grammar School Principal Dr Peter Britton said that having the students at the school was hopefully a sign of things to come with more tours planned. “They are here for a week and half, two days in Sydney and the rest here in Ipswich,” Dr Britton said. “They are having English lessons here and in that we will cover Australian history, native animals and such, then they are off to the Gold Coast, then back here for more lessons. “We’ve got this study tour here now, then

another in a fortnight. We started looking into study tours last year. Its good for them to see how Australian schools work, and great for our students to interact with them, engage and share stories.” It wasn’t that long ago that European languages were still taught as part of the schooling across the country, but that has all changed now, with students learning Chinese, Japanese and other Asian languages. “The shift from French and German I think is due to the close economic, social and cultural ties to Asia, particularly China, and consequently because of those stronger ties the focus on educating students about Asia has become part of the Australian curriculum. “We’d love to be able to send students to China from Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School, and when I’ve been there they are all keen to send students here. It would be nice to do the same and send our students and teachers to China. Hopefully it will become a reality. “I love China, its an amazing place, I love the hospitality, the history and all the culture. It’s something that we can both learn from.” Below: The students from Shanghai pictured with Mayor Pisasale, Dr Britton and Mr Edwin Lee, Chairman of GLC at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School including Ipswich Junior Grammar School.

Join your Library Circle Ipswich residents are invited to join with like-minded individuals in 2014 to share a range of interests with the establishment of a new group of ‘Library Circles’. Councillor David Pahlke said Ipswich Libraries launched Library Circles last year with Recipes, Remedies and Memories, The Reading Circle and Books, Blocks and Bubs. “Recipes, Remedies and Memories allows people to share their memories evoked by food and cooking,” Cr Pahlke said. “Participants share recipes or remedies for common ailments. This group meets from 10am to Noon on the last Tuesday of the month at Ipswich Central Library.” Cr Pahlke said two other circles established in 2013 would also be continuing. The Books, Blocks and Bubs Circle allows parents and bubs to share, play and support will continue to operate from 10am to 11am on the last Friday of the month at the Redbank Plaza branch. Cr Pahlke said people with an interest in reading could also again be part of the Reading Circle in 2014. These sessions are held at the following locations: • Ipswich Central Library — from 10am to 11am on second Thursday of the month; • Redbank Plains Library — from 10am to 11am on the fourth Wednesday of the month and; • Redbank Plaza Library — from 11am to noon on the first Tuesday of the month. Cr Pahlke said owing to the popularity of the library circles last year, three more would be added to the calendar of events for 2014. “Other topics will be catered for this year with the history, writers and movie

circles to be launched next month. These new circles will operate alongside the favourites between January/February and November. The new groups include: • History Circle for history fans to share historical facts and yarns, enjoy a chat and get the best historical resources. It will be held at Ipswich Central Library from 10am to 11am on the last Friday of the month; • Writers Circle — for budding writers to share creative writing ideas, enjoy a chat, find out about writing resources. It will be held at the Ipswich Central Library from 10am to 11am on the first Wednesday of the month and; • Movie Circle — For movie buffs to share recommendations, enjoy a chat, learn about movie databases and streaming. It will be held at the Ipswich Central Library from 10am to 11am on the third Wednesday of the month. Every now and then, Stone & Wood provide the opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together to create their own beer. With help from the crew in Byron Bay, this beer is brewed by a collective made up of an author, a graphic artist, a photographer and an architect. You can see each of them in this beer; the label is simple and square, but is has many little representations of the summer that this beer is made of. The blurb of the author on the side of the bottle explains how they want you to drink it, why you would want to drink it and how you will feel when you drink it. To quote it “The Old Persuader knows all about summer. Sit down. He’s got this.” As if it’s an old friend. I found myself referring to it as you would a person. This beer is, in all seriousness, worth a read… As for the taste, you can very clearly tell it is a lager due to the colour and crisp taste. It has a mildly sweet aroma, something like a honey or even a fresh grass clipping, which does fit into the idea of summer

and everything that comes with the beer. When you drink this beer I do think that you will feel the need to sit down and finish it, not only because of the percentage but because it cools you down, yet warms you at the same time. As a strong lager it doesn’t disappoint, with a firm malty aftertaste and a nice refreshing and crisp feel throughout. This beer will be best enjoyed as cold as possible for those long, warm summer days that are sure to come. Now pouring fresh from the Alehouse 24 Taps!

What I Can’t Wait For In 2014

We asked our readers on Facebook what they are most looking foward to in 2014, and Athena F from Silkstone responded. Congratulations Rebecca, a double movie pass is on its way!

1. Bruno Mars Live We’ve got great seats and I’ve been waiting for almost a year so i’m pretty keen! 2. Eminem Live His new album MMLP2 is absolutely amazing and I’ve heard he’s phenomenal live. 3. X-Men: Days of Future Past This movie is going to be awesome, the trailer is amazing and I can’t wait because it’s going to be a sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: First Class, and 2013’s The Wolverine. Plus two of my faves Jennifer Lawrence and Hugh Jackman are in it. 4. Captain America Winter Soldier Again because it’s a sequel. The first movie was great, and this will be even better with more action. Plus with eye candy like Chris Evans you can’t go wrong. 5. Russell Howard Live @ QPAC I’m so excited to see him live, he’s a great comedian. I watch his show ‘Good News Week’ all the time on ABC.

We may have spent the past 8 years trying to work out who the mother is on How I Met your Mother, (below) but as it turns out, the climatic final scene of the series was actually filmed in 2006! A single cameraman, series creators and the two children involved are the only ones who knew the answer the mother question — but had to sign a nondisclosure agreement until the series final aired. HIMYM is now in it’s final (9th season) and the full story is revealed in the final episode. Series creators also revealed that if the series had been cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons — they planned on making Ted’s baker girlfriend the mother… But now we have to wait and see who it really is.

Television show, Modern Family (below), is filming an ‘Australian’ episode later in the year and while the plot is not yet confirmed, the cast have leaked what might be involved. Star, Julie Bowen said: “We have been asked, ‘Were you afraid of heights? Were you afraid of fanged animals?’”. So we’re anticipating something with snakes and maybe a Sydney Harbour Bridge climb!” Modern Family recently also won the award for ‘Outstanding comedy TV ensemble’ at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Speaking of the Screen Actors Guild Awards.. Australia’s Cate Blanchett (above) was really the shining star — taking home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for the film Blue Jasmine. Kids become RAAF firefighters for a day Two boys from Sunnybank experienced day they would never forget, as Finnian and Emmet McCusker spent a day as firefighters at RAAF Base Amberley, finding out what Air Force life was all about. Finnian and Emmet’s mother, Melissa, won one of the silent auctions at the Defence Force Ball late last year, and the prize was to spend a day working with the ‘Firies’ stationed close to the runway on the air base. The boys had the oppotunity to ride in a fire fighting vehicle, see the facilities, and use some of the firefighting equipment in the vehicles. The boy’s mother, Melissa, was excited about the day after winning the event back in September at the Defence Ball. “The prize involved us coming here today, spending the day with the firemen, having a look around their hangar, seeing the offices, trying on their gear, driving around the base in the fire truck, using the water cannons, and see the jets take off…it’s been so much fun and the boys have loved it,” Melissa said. “We’ve only been here at RAAF Amberley

for an open day before, and I have a lot of connections in my family with Defence, but this is the first time I’ve done something like this.” Airfield Fire Controller Sergeant Gordon

McCartney said that days like this are good for everyone, and are a pleasure to do. “We sometimes do things like this for schools, and its good to do demonstrations for kids,” he said.

“We spend most of our time training for aircraft emergencies, particularly ones that may occur on base. We have a fifteen second response time, and that means we have to act fast, professionally, and in essence get the wet stuff to the hot stuff.” The Fire Section has five vehicles, with two online at all times. Firefighter training is carried out at RAAF Security & Fire School using another two firefighting vehicles. “At all times there are a minimum of four staff on call, but on flying days that goes to eight, SGT McCartney said.” Valued at $1.6 million each, the fire trucks have two fire agent dispensing devices at the front of the vehicles including the water cannon which can shoot out 8,500 litres of water in just two minutes. The vehicles can also dispense foam, depending on the type of fire involved. Finnian and his brother had a great day, and loved watching the Super Hornets take off close by. “Seeing the jets taking off was cool, and I loved firing the water cannon, it was awesome,” Finnian said. Photo: Finnian and Emmet McCusker inside one of the firefighing vehicles, don firefighter helmets during their visit to RAAF Amberley.

RAAF Caribou squadrons celebrate 50 years The venerable DH-4C Caribou Short Takeoff & Landing (STOL) may be gone from operational service with the RAAF, but past and present members of 35 Squadron and 38 Squadron will commemorate the Caribou’s 50th anniversary with a reunion at Coffs Harbour in August this year. The reunion is a privately organised event to be held over the weekend of Friday August 8th to Sunday 10th at the Opal Cove Resort. Event organiser Stew Bonett said the reunion would commemorate the arrival of the first Caribous at 38 Squadron, RAAF Richmond on the 22 April 1964. “We will also commemorate the arrival of the first Caribous to fly operations in Vietnam with `RAAF Transport Flight Vietnam’ from August the 8, 1964 until June 1966 when 35 Squadron was reformed to take over from RTFV,” he said. “We intend to hold a `meet and greet’ barbecue on the Friday night followed by a sit-down dinner on the Saturday evening. “Accommodation at the Opal Cove Resort is $145.00 for a standard room and an ocean view upgradefor $20.00 per double, both room prices includes full breakfast for two.”

The Caribou has a proud history of active service in Vietnam, and had an impressive capability to take off and land on unprepared runways, and is still recognised as one of the most capable short haul transport aircraft in the world. Operated by No 38 Squadron at RAAF Richmond and later RAAF Amberley, and at RAAF Townsville in north Queensland the Caribou’s main operational role was tactical air transport in support of the Australian Army. The Caribou was the last piston-engined aircraft in the Air Force and is the only aircraft to employ the Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES), which permitted very accurate delivery of up to a 2000kg of cargo, mounted on a sled, which is extracted from the aircraft by a parachute from a height of approximately one metre above the ground. Although operating an aging aircraft, the Caribou force

engaged in the famine relief operations in Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya during Operations SIERRA, PLES DRAI and AUSINDO JAYA, as well as the Tsunami relief operation in PNG in 1999 and in operations in East Timor since 1999. At this time I am asking for expressions of interest for the event. Stew Bonett said that bookings at Opal Cove Resort can be made on 1800 008 198 or 02 6651 0510, Fax: 02 6651 0572, E: confsales@opalcove.com. “The resort will accept bookings now and I advise you to book as early as you can,” he said. Defence Bank wins Gold for New Car Loan Cheaper interest rates, fast approvals and pre-approvals and waiving fees for extra repayments or paying out loans early were the key reasons why Defence Bank walked away with Money magazine’s 2013 Best of the Best Gold Winner for the Cheapest New Car Loan. Jon Linehan, Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Bank, said it was an honor for the bank to be recognised by Money magazine. “The decision to waive fees for early repayments or paying out a loan early reflects the fact we exist to serve our members.” Two Defence Bank members who have recently taken out car loans have been suitably impressed by the bank’s service.

Sergeant Justin King, based at the Edinburgh RAAF base in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, researched his financing options before deciding on getting a loan from Defence. “In the end they were offering the best deal, both in terms of the interest rate and fees.” For Seaman Phillip Cowan, a helicopter technician and based at HMAS Albatross at Nowra, it was the convenience of Defence Bank that secured his business. “It just makes it that much easier when you can do your banking on the base during working hours.” To find out more about Defence Bank Car Loans, call 1800 033 133 or go to defencebank. com.au

MOTORING

PROPERTY & FINANCE BY MARK BOURIS

How to invest in property There are many reasons to own investment property: you might want an asset for retirement, you might wish to rent where you live and own a property elsewhere, or property might be your choice of wealthcreation. Regardless of why you invest in property, there are a few things to keep in mind: Goal: be clear about what you want to achieve, and in what time-frames. Before you buy a property you should decide on your earning goals: will this be a negatively or positively geared investment? Will you invest in renovations to increase your rental return? Budget: write detailed plans about what you have to spend, how much you will have to borrow, and what the borrowings will cost. Include the cost of renovating, repairs and maintenance as well as the predicted costs of management, insurance and rates. And then calculate rental income. Research: Do your research before you buy a property. Go to real estate agencies in the area and pick up their ‘for rent’ sheets. See what rents are being asked for what kind of properties. Ask agents what properties they would like to manage. Go to some open days. Get a sense of which agents are on their game. Inspections: if you’re buying a place to rent to others, basic things must be in working order that you might let slide if you lived there yourself. Always have an inspection done by a qualified expert. Tax advice: don’t rely on barbecue chatter for your tax advice. If you intend to negatively gear your rental property, and claim the loss you make against your taxable income, then you should be advised by a solicitor or accountant, at least before the

purchase and for the first tax return you lodge. Fixed or variable: budget a scenario for a fixed rate and a variable rate. Fixed rates are currently very low, and give you interest rate certainty for 2, 3 or 5 years. But variable rates provide you with flexibility. Many lenders allow you to split your mortgage between fixed and variable. Renovation: do your best to assess the renovation requirements before buying the property, and put these in your budget. Don’t get carried away with renovations — stay within your budget. Insurance: landlord insurance is imperative and you should contact a broker if the inclusions and exclusions confuse you. Renting property is a business and some of the features of landlord insurance might not be familiar. Get this right. Management: there’s a clear choice. You either decide to manage the property yourself, doing basic maintenance and repairs. Or you use a managing agent who will charge a percentage of the rent. DIY managers of property can usually do the handiwork, but inexperienced owners usually stumble on tenant law and collecting rent. Investing in property is an excellent way to build wealth, but it should be approached like a business. Have a goal, have a plan and work within your budget. Features make a greater leap with the 2.5 litre SP25 model, which adds 18-inch alloys, front fog lamps, a rear spoiler (sedan), advanced keyless entry and dual-zone climate control. Like the Maxx however, the SP25 has cloth seats only. For leather seats in your SP25, you’ll move to the 2.5 GT upgrade, which also adds adaptive bi-xenon headlights, autodimming rear-view mirror, nine-speaker Bose audio and the new Active Drive In Display (head-up display). A sunroof can also be optioned with the SP25 GT model. At the top of the range is the new 2.5 SP25 Astina, which builds on the GT by adding a sunroof and upgraded i-ActiveSense safety equipment, as offered with the Mazda6 range. An optional safety pack will also be offered with all models below the Astina, adding Blind Spot Monitoring and Smart City Brake Support (both standard with Astina). New Corolla adds space and style Toyota has stretched the wheelbase of this year’s Corolla sedan to deliver advances in design, interior space and driving appeal. The 11th generation Corolla sedan will be produced in Thailand for the Australian market and is set to go on sale here from the middle of February. The latest information about the new sedan coincides with confirmation that Corolla was Australia’s best-selling car in 2013. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said a more spacious cabin was the most obvious benefit resulting from the decision by Toyota’s engineers to provide an extra 100mm between the front and rear axles. “That 100mm is very important inside a car where more than half of the extra length has been devoted to improving the space and comfort of rear-seat passengers, including a significant increase in knee room,” Mr Cramb said. “The entire cabin offers a roomier and more premium environment with redesigned seats for greater flexibility and comfort — and the boot is also larger for the convenience of owners,” he said. “The longer wheelbase - along with a lower roofline and shorter rear overhang have allowed designers to craft a dramatic and expressive shape with more dynamic

proportions. “Corolla’s revised dimensions also result in a larger footprint with the wheels pushed closer to the corners of the car, enhancing the driving feel.” Mr Cramb said the decision to source the new Corolla sedan from Thailand was based on the plant’s ability to match the quality from Japan. The Free Trade Agreement with Thailand had enabled Toyota to develop a larger car with added features while keeping a lid on prices. “Thailand’s automotive manufacturing sector is well-known for producing robust vehicles like HiLux,” he said. Cumulative worldwide Corolla sales exceed 40 million since the nameplate was launched in 1966, including more than 1.25 million in Australia. The new sedan will be built in 16 locations and sold in more than 150 countries. For more information on this and all things Toyota, contact local dealer Llewellyns on 3282 2922.

Volkswagen’s Golf is 2013 Wheels Car of the Year Volkswagen’s seventh generation Golf has been named 2013 Wheels Car of the Year overnight at a gala event in Melbourne. The multi-award-winning Golf outclassed a field of 51 eligible vehicles to collect what is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most prestigious automotive awards. To receive this honour, the all-new Golf impressed Wheels’ highly respected panel of seven expert judges throughout a rigorous week of testing. Wheels magazine editor, Glenn Butler, lauded the Golf’s consistency in all of the criteria; “The Golf VII is satisfying to drive, serene to ride in and superbly user-friendly. “Volkswagen seems almost to have set out to create a car to excel in every one of the five Wheels Car of the Year criteria. And, quite simply, the Golf has aced it,” he said. Veteran judge John Carey summed up the Golf’s achievements; “The wonder-workers of Wolfsburg have created a Golf that’s better

in every way that can be measured. And the increments are anything but miniscule.” “This is one of the most worthy Wheels Car of the Year winners ever,” he wrote. Receiving the award on behalf of Volkswagen Group Australia, Managing Director, John White, commented on the win: “It is a great pleasure and honour to receive this award on behalf of so many in the Volkswagen family.” IPSWICHLIFE 21
