WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE

Ipswich: get set to recycle! A new video designed to encourage residents to become better recyclers has been launched by Ipswich City Council. Results of the campaign will be monitored in the hope that residents can show growth in the amount of recyclable materials. Launching the videos with the help of Reading Cinemas and students from Collingwood Park State School who have been studying the effects of recycling, the video features the voices of members of the Ipswich Cambrian Junior Choir reminding people about the different types of materials which could be placed in the yellow-lidded recycling bins. The video also features Karalee youngster Darcy de Kleyn and Pastor Faaua Lologa demonstrating the way in which the community should be recycling. It is hoped that other councils around the country will follow the lead of Ipswich and increase the amount of recyclable materials that don’t end up in the wrong bin. “It is important that we all play our part in ensuring that as much material as possible makes its way to council’s recycling service,” Cr Pisasale said. “Recycling is the way to go for the future so we can avoid sending extra materials to landfill. We want people to take on board this message and help council reduce the amount of rubbish which could be recycled but was currently being sent to landfill.” Cr Pisasale said council was piloting a promotional campaign to encourage residents to become better at recycling. “The pilot campaign aims to reduce recycling contamination by going back to basics and reinforcing the fundamental recycling categories — paper, glass, plastic, metal and boxes. “The message of not placing your recycling in a plastic bag is also being reinforced. “Anything that is placed in a plastic bag in the recycling bin goes straight to landfill.” Cr Cheryl Bromage said council wanted to ensure that there was a marked improvement in the amount of materials collected across the city for recycling.

“The material that is collected in the fortnightly recycling service is audited on a quarterly basis,” she said. “Unfortunately the last audit indicated a contamination level of over 24%. This means that about a quarter of the material that Ipswich residents placed in their yellow-lidded bins ended up being disposed of in landfills. “Council pays a penalty to the Materials Recovery Facility based on the contamination of the collected material. The higher the contamination level the more it costs council to provide the recycling service to residents.” Cr Bromage said a number of areas of Ipswich were being targeted in the pilot campaign with different promotional strategies. She said the campaign had been developed to identify which strategies were most effective in reducing recycling contamination. “We want to see which strategies are most effective in helping to improve recycling practices. “Once this information has been determined then a larger campaign can be developed for Ipswich.” You can view the video at www.ipswich.qld. gov.au/residents/waste/recycling Main: Collingwood Park students (L-R) Emma Murphy, LIta Vakauta, Gary Taylor and Jamus Ruben with Darcy De Kleyn join Cr Attwood, Mayor Paul Pisasale and Cr Bromage to launch the new video at Redback Cinemas. The finishing touches are being put on a classic play which is set to entertain local families during the school holidays. The Ipswich Musical Theatre Company Juniors have been busy in rehearsals for the performance which is on from July 2–5. Consisting of junior community theatre members, there are around 34 children involved in the production from ages 7 to 16, and several of the roles for adults have gone to mums and dads of the children involved. Mayor Paul Pisasale and Cr Heather Morrow are proud to support the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company’s production of Peter Pan, along with support from the Tivoli Drive-In Theatre. Due to the number of people involved, the show has been moved to the Ipswich Girls Grammar assembly hall instead of the Old Courthouse building. Peter Pan was first published back in 1904 by Scottish author J.W.Barrie, and the character has appeared in several movies, plays, TV series and other works. Later this year a new adapation of the novel ‘Pan’, will appear in

MAYORS TOP

Tips for being

FIVE

environmentally friendly

WITH Cr PAUL PISASALE

Use your yellow lidded bin

Did you know if household items are not properly recycled they will end up in landfill. Your yellow-lidded bin can take paper, newspaper, magazines, advertising materials, cardboard, milk and juice cartons, empty pizza boxes, glass jars and bottles, aluminium drink cans, steel food cans, aerosol cans, plastic bottles and containers. Help us make the most of Ipswich’s recycling system by following these simple tips — rinse out items, remove lids and place all items loose in the bin, NOT in plastic bags.

Start composting

Composting is the natural breakdown of organic material into a loose earth-like substance that can be used as a natural fertiliser for our gardens. Approximately half of our domestic rubbish consists of kitchen and garden waste, which makes excellent compost and to put this back into the earth, rather than landfill is a great way to help the environment. Using compost on your garden will also help improve its health by avoiding the use of chemical fertilisers. It’s a win-win for everyone. For tips on starting your own compost visit council’s website at www. ipswich.qld.gov.au

Worm farming

Worm farming is another great form of composting. A worm farm can turn all your kitchen scraps into an excellent solid fertiliser and a liquid that will help give your garden a boost. Hardware and garden stores have start-up kits, or you can make your own. Check out how to make a DIY worm farm on council’s website at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au

Recycle or swap your plastic bags

Did you know a single-use plastic bag is used on average for 12 minutes and can take up to 1000 years to decompose? Australians use more than 3.92 billion plastic bags every year and you can help the environment by re-using them or returning them to your local supermarket for recycling. Alternatively, why not swap your plastic bags for reusable shopping bags.

BEHIND THE

LENS

The Enviroplan Photography Competition is on again! Each issue until closing date Ipswich Life will feature some of the best pics from last year and find out the story behind the photo. This issue we spoke with Julie-Anne from Thagoona who took out a 2nd place last year with her photo ‘Firelight and Starlight’. “Photography is a hobby of mine, and it’s something I really enjoy doing. “Usually outdoor scenes are what I love to do. I like nature photography…I wouldn’t say I’m really good at it, but I also dabble in food photography which is very controlled, so for me taking photos outdoors is more challenging,” Julie-Anne said. “The reason being you can’t control the lighting, and you have to adapt to changes in that light, with creates different scenarios and puts me out of my comfort zone. “I’m mainly self taught, but there are so many resources online, especially photography forums, and heaps of videos on you tube on how to use a camera, how to print, process images and so on. “With regards to ‘Firelight and Starlight’, I had a vision in my head of a star photo, and they can be tricky to do. “We set up the campsite in Thagoona and when I took the shot I did it with two separate images using a 5 second exposure for the campfire and a 20 second exposure for the stars. The reason was that due to the light from the fire being so bright, versus the duller light of the stars. There was such a contrast between the

Students recognise ‘31’ fire and the stars. It was a little bit of trial and error, but I got there in the end. I think the photo speaks for itself. “I put in several photos for the competition last year, in several categories. I think everyone should have a go at sending in photos. Go for it! “I’d never entered a competition prior to this, and was so surprised when I won some awards. I’m entering again this year, and already thinking about what I can shoot. “I look forward to it now, and it is great to just get outside. Often it is just a case of just being in the right place at the right time!” Above: Julie-Anne from Thagoona and her winning entry last year (below), ‘Firelight and Starlight’.

Each day 31 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer and Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Bill Petch warned these figures will continue to climb unless more is done to find better treatments. “Every 46 minutes someone in Australia is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every two hours someone loses their life,” Mr Petch said. “Although more children are surviving, many people don’t realise that 4 in 10 Australian adults diagnosed with this terrible disease will die. We simply cannot afford to let the rates of diagnosis and mortality continue to increase.” In what may come as a surprise to many, blood cancers are in fact the third biggest cause of cancer death in Australia, behind only lung and bowel cancer. The charity, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, recently announced its Trials Enabling Program — the first of its kind in Australia — which gives blood cancer patients access to potentially lifesaving medicines from around the world. Only a small proportion of international trials are available in Australia because of the high cost of bringing them into the country. Students at WMAC supported the charity with a “World’s Greatest Shave” event earlier this year, and year 11 student Jaidyn Koina said that the students were keen to help out any way they could. “I have an uncle that died from Leukaemia, so it’s a personal cause for me,” he said. “We have a large involvement through raising money at the school. “We raised over $5,000 with the World’s

In 2013/14 the charity provided 1458 nights of accommodation to those in the West Moreton Hospital and Health Service region. “We aren’t funded by the government and desperately need Queenslanders to help us beat blood cancers,” he said. “Every dollar donated today, brings us closer to the cures of tomorrow,” Mr Petch said. Semester two enrolments closing soon Love spending time with your kids during the holidays but not loving the idea of going back to work? Thinking about a change of direction for the new financial year? Trevor Schwenke, General Manager at TAFE Queensland South West, is encouraging as many people as possible to start making change happen when semester two starts in fewer than two weeks’ time. “If you have decided that you’re not happy with the direction you’re heading, want to upskill to get that promotion or even just study something you are passionate about, I strongly encourage you to enrol,” said Mr Schwenke.

“We have hundreds of courses to suit a wide variety of people. Some of our most popular courses include education support (teacher aide), early childhood education and care – for those wanting to work in the child care industry, nursing and aged care, business administration and hairdressing while some of our most popular trades include carpentry, plumbing, electrical and automotive.” “Alternatively, if you’re looking to upskill we

have a large suite of short courses designed to complement current industry positions from beauty short courses right through to tickets for working at heights or in confined spaces.” Semester two starts Monday 13 July and payment plans, VET FEE-HELP and Certificate III Guarantee options are available for eligible students. For more information or to enrol please call 1300 914 754 or visit www.tafesouthwest.edu.au

QTA regional finalist success Metropolitan regional finalists for the Queensland Training Awards 2015 have been announced, with two being TAFE Queensland South West students. This is an excellent result and TAFE Queensland South West is incredibly proud of the students and teachers involved. This is the story of one of the regional finalists, Nicola Lang… Nicola Lang studied a Diploma of Nursing at TAFE Queensland South West in Bundamba, is currently working as an enrolled nurse at St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital and is now a QTA regional finalist for Vocational Student of Year. While studying, Nicola discovered just how much she enjoyed both the classroom and practical environment of TAFE Queensland South West which has helped fuel her love for helping others. “Going on clinical placement was always somewhat daunting; at least it was for me. I would find myself doubting my skills and knowledge but ended up really enjoying my placements, and learning so much from the wonderful nurses I had the luck and privilege to work with. To be able to attend to patients and their needs only cemented my belief that becoming an Enrolled Nurse was the right thing for me to be doing,” said Nicola. “I love my new career with a passion, I love being able to help people at a time when they are feeling quite vulnerable and if I can make a small difference to the improvement of their health and wellbeing during their illness and recovery, then I have accomplished what I set out to do.” Nicola was encouraged by her teachers to apply for the Queensland Training Awards because they recognised her hard work and achievements as a mature age student; coming back to study and take on a whole new career path is not an easy task. “When I found out I was a finalist I was very surprised, honoured and delighted. I was also humbled to think that a very ordinary person, like me, could become a finalist.” “For anyone else considering studying, I would say go for it as the satisfaction and pride in oneself at having successfully completed your training is indescribable. Age should never be a barrier. I am a strong example of what one can achieve even after a thirty-year absence from any form of study.”

Upcoming short courses Looking to complement your current skills or maybe dip your toes into a new industry? TAFE Queensland South West in Bundamba has some exciting short courses starting soon including: • Apply Welding Principles (MEM05026C) • Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITSS00024) • First Aid Skill Set (SSHLT0001) • Photoshop as a Design Tool (NACC) (Springfield only) • Preparation for Policing (AUC) (Springfield only) For a full range and more information please call 1300 914 754 or visit www.tafesouthwest.edu.au

The Springfield Anglican College AN ACTIVE LEARNING COMMUNITY It is well accepted for an independent school to reach maturity it takes some twenty to twenty five years from inception. As schools journey from their earliest days, as numbers grow, facilities built and as more opportunities become available to students, a school culture emerges and traditions become embedded setting a pathway to the future. At seventeen years old, one would suggest The Springfield Anglican College is making great strides across all dimensions of the College’s holistic approach to education and it is lovely to see a growing maturity of offerings emerge. During the first two weeks of this term, forty-one students, ten parents and four staff travelled through Belgium, France and Turkey, commemorating ANZAC Day at Villiers

6 Ipswich Life

Bretonneux and visiting ANZAC Cove before returning home. In addition, plans are also well in motion for a ski trip to Queenstown, New Zealand in 2015. Of recent times, Years Eleven and Twelve attend the Winter National Drag Races at Willowbank, with a number of the young ladies in Years Eleven and Twelve also attending the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Engineering (STEM) Girls Conference on the Gold Coast. Year Ten participated in a two-day ‘Future Focus’ seminar, during which students were addressed by a range of different speakers from several Universities, Institutes of TAFE and the world of business and were provided with career advice from an external Careers Advisor. Year Seven students have also just returned from four days in Canberra as part of their studies, whilst Years Nine and Ten students headed to Brooyar State

Forest near Gympie to be challenged by their respective Wilderness Camps. Author visits, the annual Art Retreat, a range of excursions and guest speakers, as well as extension and enrichment opportunities as part of the College’s Altitude Programme, have provided students across both campuses, with a number of different and highly valuable learning opportunities. The Altitude Programme introduced in 2015 has provided capable academic students with great opportunity to develop their higher order thinking skills via a range of in-house and external based activities. Later this year, Professor James Morrison will return to work with students across both campuses during the day, culminating in a concert that evening, which will include the James Morrison Quintet. Add in Saturday Sport for Years Four to Twelve and a range of Creative Arts opportunities across Music, Dance and Drama, one can see The Springfield Anglican College is a very active learning community. As it should be, the College places great emphasis on the academic progress of all students. The College is non-academically selective with all students well catered for both in terms of the individual attention they require and also in terms of differing pathways as students move into Senior Schooling. The College also provides ‘curriculum flexibility’ to those students aspiring to excel in an extra-curricular area such as in a sport or

Dance. In negotiation with parents, students are able to study a more limited range of subjects to create time during the school day to complete assessments and homework and therefore have more time available outside of school time to devote to their practice and training. Through valued links with a range of universities, students in Years Eleven and Twelve study units of first year university courses receiving ‘credit’ for their studies which becomes of great value should their go on to study at that university. This year, the College introduced a powerful learning analytics programme that allows students and staff to view ‘live data’ regarding individual and cohort progress across all assessable subjects. With their academic mentors, students set goals and, several times during the year, meet to discuss progress. Access to this data is now available to parents of Years Eleven and Twelve students and will be made available to parents of students from Years One to Ten later on this year.

GE T Y T F A R C E SCHOOL

At seventeen years old, the College is very well positioned to offer a breadth of opportunity that provides students with a range of rich learning experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom, which over time greatly assists students to set themselves up for ‘Their Future”. YOUR

TAX TIME

Why use a taxation specialist? Many people choose to use apps or software provided by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and lodge their own tax returns each year, but in doing so utilise only a limited source of tax knowledge, by word of mouth and what they find on the Internet. If you use an accountant or qualified tax agent for your return you will pay a fee but more than likely receive a higher return. Tax accountants are in business to maximise your tax return, getting every item that you are legally entitled to claim. By understanding how the ATO operates and the taxes and deductions that exist, a tax professional can help you potentially saving you $1000s. Here are some reasons you should use a tax accountant include:

• They may find deductions you never knew you were entitled to claim. • They will help you learn how to organise your files for next year. • The cost of seeing one is tax deductable for the following year. • A good tax accountant will help you understand how to maximise your finances and always be safe and legal in operating under the rules the ATO provide. • Finally, and best of all, its convenient. Having someone take away the headache of doing your tax for you means you are done and dusted in most cases under an hour, plus the cost of your consultation is tax deductible from next year’s tax return.

Plan for the year ahead Investment preparation is the key to success. As another financial year closes, it is timely to review past strategies and plan for the year ahead. As a full service stockbroker, Morgans Financial Ltd. Ipswich offers smart, personalised investment advice that is tailored to your investment style and objectives. Some effective investment strategies that can be considered include:

Franking Credits Investing in listed shares that pay franked dividends is an effective income strategy used by many Australians. The grossed-up value of franking credits generally provides a more tax-effective return than normal bank interest which is particularly useful in our current low interest rate environment. Consider how your portfolio is invested and what stage of life you are at. If you require a certain income amount from your investments what else can you do to boost your income position?

Diversification Investing across all asset classes can help smooth your returns and lower investment risk. How is your portfolio invested and can you take advantage of market opportunities that may help improve the overall performance of your portfolio?

Self Managed Super Funds SMSF Trustees can also plan now for the year ahead.

R What is the fund currently invested in? R Is the portfolio in the best position to meet member objectives?

R What is the fund’s asset allocation and is

rebalancing required to realign it with the investment strategy?

R What are the pension income

requirements, if any, for the next year and how will payments be funded. Does the fund have enough liquidity to make the required payments? Contact Tony Russell or Grainne Noble on 3202 3995 if you wish to discuss your end of year planning. Please note: The above information is of a general nature and does not constitute personal advice. Morgans advisers are not tax advisers and cannot provide personal tax advice. You should request advice from a registered tax agent or registered tax (financial) adviser prior to implementing any strategies.

Cash up for grabs! Helloworld in the Ipswich City Mall have come up with a unique way to give back to the community with their brand new ‘Seeds To Grow’ program, set to benefit local sporting and community groups. When you book a holiday at helloworld, regardless of the value, one per cent of the booked value goes to support local clubs, schools and charities, community groups and not-for-profit organisations. Manager Suraj Arachchige said that he is always keen to give support to the community, this is the perfect way to give something back “We want to give back to the community we call home,” he said. “We get lots of requests to support groups from all walks of life. The weird and the wonderful…but all of them worthy. “Until now it’s been difficult for us to meet these requests so we’ve created “Seeds to Grow”. “Every quarter we will donate funds raised by the program to groups, charities and schools.” So the call is now out to local groups to get a share of the cash on offer. “On average we find our customers spend between $1000- $5000 on their holidays. In a calendar year if 10 of your friends, family or members in your club book an average $5000 holiday or travel with us, we guarantee that your club, school or community group gets a minimum of $500 a year!

School holiday activities

FOCUS ON HIGHER

EDUCATION

Ipswich Libraries have released their school holiday program which has something for everyone these school holidays, including the return of some favourites. Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Cr David Pahlke said lots of MakerSpace fun would be on offer during the June/July school holidays due to popular demand. “We once again have an action-packed program planned that will help to alleviate holiday boredom,” Cr Pahlke said. “In the Amplified Sounds workshop, you will be able to turn lumps of wood and wire into fantastic DIY instruments. “Participants will be able to take their creations home, connect to a computer or amplifier and unleash their inner sound artist.” Suitable for school-aged inventors, this workshop will be offered on June 30 at Redbank Plaza, July 1 at Ipswich Central, and July 7 at Redbank Plains Library For those keen to connect with technology, Makey Makey workshops will give young people the opportunity to transform bananas into a playable electronic keyboard with Scratch. “This is a fun way to explore electrical circuits and coding for anyone aged eight and over,” Cr Pahlke said. These workshops will be held as on July 2 at Redbank Plaza, and July 9 at Redbank Plains. Discover uncharted synthesized sounds with both the Makey Makey and Little Bits Synth kits at Ipswich Central Library. “These combined technology workshops for kids over 10 years will run for two hours from 9.30am on June 30 and also from 2pm on July 6. There will be more music and culture to be tapped into with drumming performances from Hello Africa (below) at all library branches,” Cr Pahlke said. Sessions will be held at Redbank Plains on July 2, plus Redbank Plaza and Ipswich Central Libraries on July 7. Familes can rediscover the traditional paper craft of origami with the Cranes for Peace workshop at Ipswich Central Library from 10am on July 8. “You can also drop-in to any Ipswich Libraries branch throughout the school holidays to complete simple or challenging origami

designs available in a ‘craft-in-a-bag’ kit from the front counter. “Complete this activity in the library or at home, then add your paper cranes to the Cranes for Peace display at Ipswich Central Library. Families are also invited to wind down at the end of the holidays with a special screening of Disney’s Big Hero 6 at Ipswich Central Library from 10am on July 10. The movie is rated PG and tickets are just $1.20 each and can be booked at any of the library branches. Tickets must be paid for at the time of booking. There are also a number of activities planned for Springfield residents at Orion. “Kids can catch the Library’s Young People’s Team between 1.30pm and 2.30pm on July 9 to experiment with Makey Makey or build their own grassroots instrument. “Hello Africa will also be performing at Orion from 1.30pm to 2.30pm on July 2. “As these sessions will be in the shopping centre there is no need to book.” Cr Pahlke said apart from the Movie Mania session all activities were FREE for library members. Bookings are essential for all other activities as spaces are limited. FIVE

We love getting top 5’s from readers, and Elle W from Ipswich sent us her favourite top 5 Aussie TV shows of all time. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to Aussie TV over the last 20 or so years. What are your favourites? Whether it’s golden oldies like Kingswood Country, Blankety Blanks or Prisoner, through to the last few years where Underbelly, Paper Giants and The Voice has us all glued to the screen, we want to know! (Even though some of us only watched The Voice for Kylie…*sigh*) Anyhoo, let us know and just like Elle, you could get a double movie pass in the mail! See below how to enter. 1. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (ABC) Miss Fisher is a Lady detective living in Melbourne in the 1920’s, breaking hearts and solving crimes. This TV series is glamorous, sassy, cheeky and best of all, as good as the books! Season 3 is on the ABC now so every Friday night is “Phryne’ night. 2. Hamish and Andy’s Gap Year (Nine) Hamish and Andy each year head to a destination for hi-jinks and laughs, they’ve gone to America, Europe, Asia and South America. Watching the locals shake their heads at these two bumbling lovable Aussie guys never fails to make me laugh. 3. Housos (SBS) Sadly no longer being made but often replayed on SBS, this comedy is seriously

Bogan, set in Sunnyvale, a group of dole bludgers, fight the cops, drink lots, and do illegal things. Hilarity ensues as it’s another funny show from Paul Fenech. 4. Border Security (Seven) It never fails to amaze me what and how people try to get into Australia and how hard the border security teams work. 5. Rage (ABC) Rage has been going since 1987. I still remember waking up at ridiculous hours of the night to stay up and watch Rage til the morning. Still a great place to watch Australian bands and see old gems from guest programmers. NEXT ISSUE: Email your Top 5 ‘Best Concerts I’ve Ever Seen’ and why, to darren@ strikepublications.com.au to win a double movie pass and you could be in the next issue!

FREE fitness classes

SHOP IPSWICH

Dozens of residents have jumped at the chance to take part in a new Ipswich-first free outdoor health program that has raced into Stockland’s Sovereign Pocket community at Deebing Heights, and everyone in Ipswich is welcome to join in.

The Live Life Get Active program is a private social initiative aimed at getting Australians fitter, happier and healthier. Former Olympian and Commonwealth Games champion Jane Flemming is the co-founder of the program which provides education on health, fitness and nutrition and encourages participants to track their progress online and monitor weight loss and fitness levels. “We are delighted at the initial response to the new free outdoor sessions at Sovereign Pocket,’’ said Stockland Regional Manager Mr David Laner. “I would encourage even more people to join the Live Life Get Active program and make a positive change to their health and wellbeing.” Stockland has also introduced the free training sessions at three other Queensland communities — North Lakes, Vale at Waterford and Birtinya at Oceanside on the Sunshine Coast. “We are always looking at new initiatives that allow our residents to be active and get fit, so we researched the opportunity of Stockland funding the classes in our communities, ’’ he said. “The best thing is that these sessions are open to locals in surrounding areas.” The new 45-minute Live Life Get Active classes, which include cross training, boxing and yoga, are currently held at 9.45 am Monday to Friday during school terms, making them especially handy for mums who can come along to the classes, also older residents who want to get out and about. Residents wanting to take part need to first register online. Sessions can then be booked up to one week in advance. RACEVIEW COMPLETE DENTURE CARE MEMBER: IPSWICH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY

Suzie Holmes has recently become a member of the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce as she sometimes finds that in business, you are so tied up doing the day to day work, that you sometimes need to take a step back and refocus. “I joined to get more ideas on how I can get myself out there,” Suzie said. “The Chamber provides local business the opportunity to attend evening forums. This allows fellow Chamber of Commerce members to get together and discuss issues and ideas that concern all us in the area. “For me it’s about getting out there into the community. It’s always good to hear someone else’s story, and sometimes just hearing that one point of view can inspire you to get out there and refocus on your business. “My biggest clientele is the elderly, and people after mouthguards. Many people are struggling due to the price rises they’ve had to absorb in insurance, private health… it all adds up!” Suzie is a believer in supporting local business and has seen many changes in the ten years she’s been in Raceview.

Battle of the Bands in Ipswich Whether you’re into punk, rap, metal, pop or any music genre, Ipswich City Square is sure to have just the thing to suit your musical taste buds! Featuring 20 up-and-coming bands, the event THIS SATURDAY will kick off at 11am in the Battle of the Bands.! Here’s some of the bands you’ll hear plus the timetable.

Fire & Whistle Theory

Born Obsolete

Tesla Coil

Timetable

Fire & Whistle Theory are a local rock band from Ipswich. With a collaboration of 3 separate song writers, the boys have created a very unique sound that has been getting them some serious attention! They have already graced the stages at many of South East Queensland’s top live music venues, as well as performances at Red Deer Music and Arts Festival and Airlie Beach Music Festival. While listening to Fire & Whistle Theory you’ll be taken on journey of the real moments that life beholds. They describe their music as “New Wave Blues Rock, with a little Swing”.

Tesla Coil is a Brisbane-based three-piece alternative rock band. Not alternative in the way the loud-mouth behind you in high school with bleached hair was alternative, but in the way that you put a banjo and a flute into a rock group and call it edgy. Forming in 2013 (depending on who you ask), Fin, Sarah, and James have travelled all around the Brisbane music scene making audiences raise eyebrows at their unorthodox instrumentation and bizarre song themes. With comparisons to Arcade Fire, Ben Folds Five, and Grinspoon all being drawn by guys who’ve come up to them after shows.

14 Ipswich Life

Ipswich band ‘Born Obsolete’ answered some of our questions, and we loved the responses. Where are you from? Ipswich How and when did the band start? The band is the love child of Gaven and Gary and was born of an Ipswich shed on a hot August night. What sets you apart from the other bands? We can eat more fried chicken than any other band, and we do not play covers. How will you prepare for the Battle of the Bands? We chant limericks from Georges Bataille’s ‘Story of the Eye’ while we get a whirlpool happening in the hot tub, then we float in circles and plait each other’s hair.

Local church lends a hand in Vanuatu Cyclone Pam, which ripped through the islands of Vanuatu, destroyed everything in its path but the villagers are rebuilding, with the assistance of caring organisations such as Fernvale Community Church and the GROW Network. Thousands of people were displaced, traditional homes flattened and crops destroyed but life is returning to some degree of normality. Pastor Greg Muller said that the people are regrouping, to rebuild and go forward. “They just need a lot of help from us,” he said. “Most of the major aid organisations have left Tanna Island to concentrate on Port Vila. “The people on Tanna are still suffering greatly, their homes are still down, and unless agencies such as ourselves come up with finance to rebuild infrastructure in villages then the future is bleak for these people. “The first priority is to build a church, as it’s a meeting place, and schools. To provide finance to buy materials for community buildings gives people a sense of community and brings them together - and they know that people elsewhere in the world care about them Pastor Muller said the aim is to raise $10,000 in the coming months to send to Vanuatu, to be distributed by the churches there directly to the people to help them rebuild their shattered lives. Any money raised will be used to buy materials to build solid roof structures that can withstand another cyclone, to at least provide shelter that doesn’t blow away. “It costs about $3000 to put up a roof structure, which is great value for money, when compared with what it would cost in Australia,” Pastor Muller said.

Happy birthday RAAF Amberley

BEST LINE OF

DEFENCE

After 75 years of air operations and development, RAAF Base Amberley is now a Defence super base, with more than 6000 people working there. An historical twist is that the first aircraft to land at Amberley was a DH “HornetMoth” owned by the construction contractors in 1939; 75 years later the base is home to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. In June 1940, the first aircraft, a Moth Minor, commenced flying operations from the airfield located west of the City of Ipswich, followed soon after by AVRO Ansons and CAC Wirraways. During its 75 years the air base and its personnel have forged strong links with Ipswich, and that remains so to this day. In December 1938, some 882 acres of land in the Parish of Jeebropilly were gazetted for Defence purposes at Amberley on a property previously owned by the Collet family. Surprisingly, the government of the day chose an area prone to flooding from overflows from the Bremer River and Warrill Creek. Known then as ‘Jeebropilly’ by indigenous Australians, translated as ‘Swamp of the Flying Squirrels’, the airfield was located on a property named after the Collett’s village of origin in West Sussex, England. The air base received a huge boost in aircraft and personnel with the outbreak of World War

II and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The United States Army Air Corps quickly established an Air Echelon at Air Station Amberley, and shipped in aircraft such as Kittyhawks, Airocobra and Dauntlass. The fighters were assembled from kits at Amberley for the Pacific War effort. No 3 Aircraft Depot at Amberley became a significant aircraft assembly, salvage and maintenance facility. Amberley Air Station also the only United States flying unit to be formed outside US, the 75th Fighter Group. Post World War II, No 82 Wing relocated to Amberley equipped with B-24 Liberator bombers, which began more than 50 years as a major RAAF base for bomber operations. No 23 Squadron ceased flying operations and was reformed as a RAAF Active Reserve unit. Today, the squadron is a Base Operations and Combat Support Unit. ...continued next page

BEST LINE OF

DEFENCE

A major change came in 1954 when 82 Wing entered the jet age with the GAF Canberra to replace the Lincolns. Canberra operations from RAAF Amberley ensued for 20 years, which included precision bombing operations from Phan Rang air base in South Vietnam, and later photographic survey operations over Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya. In the early 1970s, Amberley was home to McDonald Douglas F-4 Phantom fighter/ bomber aircraft flown by aircrews on-hold waiting for the F-111 to arrive following lengthy production delays in the US. In December 1971, No 9 Squadron, with its UH-1 Iroquois Helicopters, relocated to Amberley from active service in Vietnam. Finally, in June 1973, the iconic swing-wing F-111C strike aircraft arrived at RAAF Amberley to begin the modern era of supersonic strike, later strike/reconnaissance, operations. The F-111 became the most recognised aircraft in RAAF service, mainly due to its magical ‘Dump & Burn’ flypasts at air shows and other major events across Australia. The air base has also been home to CH-47 Chinook helicopters with No 12 Squadron, later transferred to the Australian Army, and DH-4 Caribous with No 38 Squadron, later relocated to RAAF Base Townsville. The beginning of the 21st Century brought a major base re-development program to RAAF Amberley, which continues 15 years later. During this time, Air Force was joined by Australian Army units that now call the base home. Over the past decade the base has become home to the newest aircraft in the RAAF including the C-17A Globemaster III airlifter with No 36 Squadron, followed in 2008 by the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft with No 22 Squadron.

By this time the F-111’s days were numbered, with the decision to replace the F-111 with the F/A-18F Super Hornet , and the first tranche of five aircraft arriving on-base in 2010, followed by another 19 aircraft assigned to Nos 1 and 6 Squadrons. Fittingly, the first Super Hornet to land at RAAF Amberley bore the logo of the City of Ipswich, much to Mayor Paul Pisasale’s great pleasure. The F-111s flew their farewell flight in December 2010. RAAF Amberley continues to grow, and it will become more influential in the coming years. Likely, the C-17A and KC-30A squadrons will be joined by other airlift squadrons as the need for airlift support is now mostly to Amberley’s north. Access to airlift support and major highways will also be an incentive for other Australian Army units to call ‘Defence Force Base’ Amberley home.

The Sabotage Diaries

By Katherine Barnes Based on the wartime diaries of Allied soldier and saboteur Tom Barnes, this account of thrilling WWII wartime deeds deep behind enemy lines in Greece is based on fact but reads like fiction. This is the astonishing true story of Allied engineer Tom Barnes, who was parachuted behind enemy lines in Greece in October 1942. Their brief was to work with the Greek resistance in sabotage operations against the German and Italian occupation forces. (Harper Collins)

First E-7A refuel from KC-30A

Squadron Leader Ben Goring, Executive Officer No 33 Squadron, said air-to-air refuelling required both aircraft to fly in close formation at more than 500 kilometres per hour. “The KC-30A deploys the 17-metre-long Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) from the aft fuselage, which is guided by an Air Refuelling Operator on the KC-30A into a refuelling receptacle on the Wedgetail,” he said. “Each KC-30A has a fuel capacity of more than 100 tonnes, and can offload fuel via the ARBS at up to 4500 litres per minute. “The ARBS on the KC-30A represents a completely new capability for Air Force.” The KC-30A has been cleared to refuel Hornets and Super Hornets using its hose-and-drogue refuelling pods. Since September 2014, KC-30As deployed to Operation OKRA have used these pods to deliver more than 10,800 tonnes of fuel to RAAF and Coalition aircraft.

Air Force has completed air-to-air refuelling trials between its KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport and E-7A Wedgetail aircraft. Wing Commander Christian Martin, Commanding Officer of No 2 Squadron said airto-air refuelling was a ‘force multiplier’ for the Wedgetail fleet. “Air-to-air refuelling considerably increases the Wedgetail’s range and endurance, allowing us to provide Command and Control, and Air Battlespace Management over longer periods,” Wing Commander Martin said. “This was demonstrated in the Middle East Region under Operation OKRA, when RAAF Wedgetails refuelled from foreign air force tankers, to fly extended sorties. “Once the trial results are assessed an initial clearance is expected to be granted to allow Wedgetail crews to begin refuelling training flights with the KC-30A.”

MATTERS Getting advice Is the traditional model of financial planning broken? There are consistently low levels of Australians using financial advisers – in 2011 the government estimated that 21 per cent of Australian adults had used a financial planner in the previous year. We know that young people generally reject financial advice the way the industry tends to serve it up. They don’t want advice with someone who does it all for them. They want to be taught how. So if the customer wants something different, why does the model remain the same? It’s a serious question. Our retirement savings system puts the burden on the individual to make good decisions. Quality of advice has a large bearing on how successful the retirement planning will be, especially when it comes to the tax system. Yet people are wary of a planning industry that cannot provide them simple, affordable financial advice, regardless of income and assets. Time and again Australians tell the financial services industry the same story: the financial planning model is too expensive, is skewed to wealthy folks and gives control to the adviser. Traditional financial planning means handing over control to someone else – at high price. Control over decisions and assets is an issue

for consumers. But cost is factor too. Recent research from Investment Trends found that cost remained the biggest barrier to retaining a financial planner. When cost is taken into account, only a small proportion of Australians would still like to receive the traditional model of comprehensive advice delivered face-to-face. The platforms already exist where people can use transaction tools for super, insurance, mortgages and shares. It’s just that these wrap accounts are controlled by planners. Once people have the visibility of their own assets, they can use advisers who coach, allowing the customer to run their own finances without hefty adviser costs. My own company has been trialling this idea. but one company can’t turn this around – the financial services industry and the government both have to step up and meet the customer halfway. If people must be responsible for their own retirements, we can at least help them help themselves. . BEHIND THE

WHEEL Holden

launches Insignia Holden’s European invasion continues, with the German-designed and built Insignia VXR performance sedan recently launching at the snow-covered Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground in New Zealand. Packing all-wheel-drive and turbocharged performance, the Insignia marks fresh territory for Holden’s long-established performance credentials. From one performance hero to another, V8 Supercar championship winner, James Courtney, also joined the launch, and was officially announced as the vehicle ambassador for the Insignia VXR sports sedan. The Holden Racing Team driver and 2010 V8 Supercar Series Championship winner put the Insignia to the test in the snow-covered conditions, demonstrating just what the Insignia is capable of in a series of extreme ice driving exercises. Courtney said the Insignia VXR thrived at the Proving Ground’s challenging winter conditions which were a far cry from the heat of the previous V8 Supercar round in Darwin. “Ice driving has been an awesome

experience and I am really impressed with what the Insignia VXR is capable of doing” Courtney said. “It’s an exciting and engaging drive experience with a great AWD system that provides fantastic traction and ensures all 239 kilowatts of power are delivered to the driven wheels. “This a genuine performance mid-size sedan that combines power, an amazing amount of technology and stunning looks.”

Following the launch of Astra and Cascada, Insignia VXR is the next instalment in Holden’s future product onslaught which promises 24 new models and 36 powertrain combinations over the next five years; a third of which will be sourced from Europe. Designed, engineered and built in Russelsheim, Germany, Insignia VXR boasts a long list of technology features including a premium infotainment system, two eightinch digital display screens, Adaptive Forward Lighting, Side Blind Spot Alert and FlexRide Suspension.

i30 Tourer Moves to Series II The wagon version of Hyundai’s big-selling and multi-award-winning i30 has received important upgrades in its latest Series II guise, including a 7-speed DCT (Double-Clutch Transmission) as standard.

Infiniti Q30 to debut at Frankfurt

Also new across the two-tier i30 Series II Tourer range is a rear-view camera as standard equipment, together with a host of significant changes which make the stylish and versatile small wagon even more functional. i30 Series II Tourer now comes in two model variants: Tourer (which replaces the previous Active) and Tourer Elite. Entry-level Tourer is available with Hyundai’s 1.6 GDi Petrol or 1.6 CRDi Diesel engines, while Tourer Elite is available exclusively with the 1.6 CRDi Diesel. Also new on i30 Series II Tourer and Tourer Elite are dynamic new-design 16-inch machined-face alloy wheels with gunmetal grey inserts. i30 Series II Tourer and Tourer Elite now also feature as standard the clever rearview camera introduced with i30 Series II hatchback. The camera image is displayed on the new 5-inch in-dash multimedia touch screen in i30 Series II Tourer, and the carryover 7-inch touch screen in Tourer Elite.

Infiniti will unveil its first-ever compact car at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September this year (September 17–27, 2015). Two years after the Infiniti Q30 Concept debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt show, the production version of this segment-spanning compact car will be revealed at the show this year.
