As half of one of the country’s most loved acts for nearly two decades in the shape of ‘Lano & Woodley’, it has taken a while for Frank to find his feet as a solo performer, and it is winning over critics, fans and new admirers all at the same time. Since Lano and Woodley called it a day in 2006, Frank Woodley has been a constant on TV, radio and stages around the nation, and won critical acclaim for his ABC show ‘Woodley’ that aired in 2012, and as a comic who does so much ‘physical’ comedy, it’s an artform where timing is everything. “Without blowing my own trumpet, ‘Woodley’ got the best reviews for anything I’ve ever gotten, but that’s not the most important thing,” Frank said from his Melbourne home. It didn’t go ‘gangbusters’ in terms of the ratings, but those who got into it really, really loved it, so it was very satisfying to get that response. “Much of the material was inspired by the masters of comedy like Stan Laurel and Buster Keaton. There was one scene when I grabbed a saxophone and it falls apart, and during filming I picked it up and it fell apart on cue. This prop guy ran in to fix it; he didn’t get the joke, and the crew never let him forget it. “When I look at someone like Rowan Atkinson, he controls every element of his performance. He knows where every hair on his head is, yet I enjoy bringing an element of chaos and spontaneity to my shows.” Frank has appeared on many shows on TV, and one of his best was several memorable appearances on ‘Thank God You’re Here’ . “All things go in waves and trends, and TGYH was one example. Doing that was like being in the middle of a ‘Carry On’ movie. You feel like it’s this timeless little comedy pod you go into and I loved doing it.” Frank loves doing the Comedy Festival

WANT TO SEE FRANK WOODLEY LIVE ON STAGE? IpswichLife has the last two tickets to the final night of Frank’s sold-out new show ‘Fool’s Gold’ at the Brisbane Comedy Festival at 7.30pm on Sunday March 2. To win email your details including daytime phone number to win@strikepublications.com.au with the word ‘FRANK’ in the subject line, or mail to Frank Woodley Contest, PO Box 124, Ipswich 4305. Closes noon February 28, and winner contacted by phone. circuit, and feels glad to be in such good company when he travels the nation. “I think most comedians would attest that if audiences come out and see you, you’re rapt. It’s a privilege to perform to big houses full of people. I’ve done a couple of tours in situations where people haven’t come out, and that’s been really hard when you’re away from your family and its falling flat. Luckily though it hasn’t happened many times, and when big audiences do come out it’s just a pleasure. “I’ve done about four tryouts for this show which can be humbling, to find that an idea I think is hilarious can be a bit weak, and vice versa...so that’s a great process. It’s crucial to keep refining when you get to a paying audience, and I’m starting at the Adelaide Fringe so I’m sure it will be quite tight by the time I get to Brisbane. “I know this sounds crazy, but on the Lano and Woodley farewell tour, even on the last night we were coming up with ideas and tweaking things! I love that process of refining things, that constant concept of improvement; it’s a heap of fun. “How would I describe the show? Let me see…it’s my attempt to keep the audience from thinking at any point in time ‘I’d like to leave now’.” (Laughs). ‘Fool’s Gold’ is on from Feb 25 to Mar 2.. Tickets are selling fast at www. briscomfest.com.au.

‘Best Seat in the House’ launched Comedy, theatre, music for all ages, opera and dance lead a bumper performing arts program in the first six months of 2014 at Ipswich Civic Centre and Studio 188. For the first time Ipswich's two leading creative spaces have come together to offer a strong performing arts program under the banner Best Seat in the House.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the incredible line up of talent and shows confirmed council's commitment to offering first-class entertainment at both councilowned venues. "This year lovers of theatre can take advantage of special ticket pricing offers including four shows by our major state performing arts companies for the price of three," Cr Paul Pisasale said. "The Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Opera Queensland and Expressions Dance Company are famous for some of the finest stagecraft in Australia. "This package will feature Puccini's famous romantic opera La bohème performed by Opera Queensland. "Also included is a contemporary dance performance by Expressions Dance Company and two symphony concerts by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Studio 188 in the old Baptist Church is now state-of-the-art performance space especially for young people. "Hosting rock, pop, band nights, jazz, musical theatre, poetry nights and play readings, with

shows performed by the community, the venue boasts cutting-edge equipment.” Arts, Community and Cultural Services committee chairperson Cr Charlie Pisasale said, "This is a watershed year for performing arts in Ipswich with a bigger program than ever before. Additionally, THAT Production Company will be the inaugural Company-InResidence at Studio 188. "The Live at 188! program is presented in partnership with Phoenix Radio at University of Southern Queensland and the Queensland Conservatorium: Griffith University.” Legendary jazz performer James Morrison said, ” I’ve seen a lot of Australia that’s for sure. Ipswich has changed so much over the years, the facilities have really improved, but that’s not the most important thing. “The attitude has really changed in this city. There’s such a vibrant arts community here. Council have done a fantastic job here about bringing that change, getting the right people in, and its really ramping up now. “In my role as a Queensland Music Festival Director, I often feel that I have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to compete with Ipswich, and that’s fantastic. “We need more venues like the Civic Centre.” Mayor Paul Pisasale said.

“We are taking the Arts seriously, and you can’t have construction without heart and soul. You heard James Morrison say that there aren’t too many places in Australia that do what we do. “Studio 188 is going to be the breeding ground for young artists. We’re going to see some world class artists come out of Ipswich. “Artists want to come here, they love the city and they love the passion.” Photos: Ipswich singer/ songwriter artist, Livvy Shears (left) performed at the ‘Best Seat in the House’ launch. Janet Pisasale

Ipswich Mayoress Chair Ipswich Community Fund Janet Pisasale is well known all over Ipswich as the other (and the Mayor would say ‘Better’) half of ‘Team Pisasale’. With husband Paul spending so much time running all over the country promoting our city, Janet spends a lot of her time standing in for him at numerous events while dedicating countless hours to charity. She’s passionate about Ipswich, and it shows. “I’ve lived here all my life,” Janet told Ipswich Life. “If you didn’t believe in it you couldn’t do what we do, because it’s not a nine to five job. Some days start with a breakfast, things go all day then you get home at nine o’clock at night. “Saturdays and Sundays are our busiest days of the week. There’s so many birthdays, sports functions and so on…it’s the weekend for most people so that’s when most things happen. You have no idea how many people in Ipswich are 100 or over! That’s a lot of birthday parties, but I do love it. It’s a great chance to catch up with people. “I support things that I believe are worthwhile, even if they don’t have the great profile, there’s a lot of good people out there. I support a group called ‘Vision Patchwork’. They do quilting which then go to the police and then they go to children who have been put into foster care. It’s a wonderful cause. There’s lot of little groups like that who do a lot of good for people in Ipswich. “ Janet never planned a public life, but being married to a politician means that you eventually get caught up in it. “Gradually I got roped into politics,” Janet said. “I looked after the children basically. I went to all the parent teacher nights, drove them to sport and so on while Paul was out and about doing politics. At the end of the day I believe in Ipswich, and I believe in the community. You have to be out there believing in what you do. “Ipswich has changed a lot. If you went to a function in Brisbane twenty years ago people asked if you sleeping there for the night when you told them you were from Ipswich, they thought it was so far away. I was often asked how I handled all the problems, but Ipswich is no different to anywhere else in that respect. “Now its so different, Ipswich is going great, and wherever I go you rarely hear a negative word!” Janet smiled when asked if she considers her life normal, and wondered what IS normal these days? “Nothing is normal with us. Our children would bring friends home when they were younger, and something would always happen. “Our crazy life is normal for us, I guess that’s the weirdest thing…the fact that we don’t think our life is crazy at all!

Making Aussies laugh for more than a decade It’s official, comedian Stephen K. Amos has now lost count of the number of times he’s visited Australia to perform. Speaking backstage after another sellout show in the UK, Amos told Ipswich Life that he still can’t figure out what it is that hits a chord with Australian audiences, as he prepares to be the headline act at the Brisbane Comedy Festival with six shows from March 18. “I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been there, its been about nine or ten years I’ve been coming out there, and I wish I knew what it was that Aussies like about my humour,” Amos said. “Mabye its because I just tell it like it is, be it in in terms of being an immigrant, or maybe people can relate to my growing up, I don’t know.” Amos has performed stand up since 2001, and as one of eight children in a family that moved from Nigeria in the 1960’s it gives him a wealth of material to pull from. Amos has also starred in a self titled TV show, along with heaps of radio shows, a grand tradition in the UK. “One thing I noticed when I was last in Australia is that you have a lot of radio shows but its all based on breakfast and drivetime. We here in the UK have a long tradition of live shows and sitcoms on radio, and I’m not sure why that is, whether its stay at home mums, or retirees, but there is a massive market for comedy on radio and many of them end up on TV such as ‘Little Britain’. “When I’m writing for radio I have to be careful about the use of language, there are all kinds of limits on what you can do at certain times of day, but when I’m on stage anything goes, its rather liberating. “I’m currently doing two radio shows, The first is like a sitcom, and I have people playing my mum, my dad plus I narrate it as well. The other show I do as host and I have a topic for the day and invite three guests to discuss it with it eventually going out to the audience, its great fun. “I always take the attitude at my show that I want people to live in the moment, I like them to come to my show and feel they’ve been part of something. “Sometimes when I do a gig I will have three generations of people in the audience from the one family, its great to have such a wide appeal. It does sometimes surprise me that they are so young, I remember things like Pen Pals and

a time before mobile phones… its all about finding a point of reference that everyone in the audience can relate to.” Amos is like many comics at the moment, doing the festival circuit, taking in Adelaide Fringe, Brisbane Comedy Festival and of course, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. It’s all part of his plan to stay warm, and put behind him his recent appearance on ‘The Great British Bake Off’. “I love being there for festival season, I adore doing that run as it starts in February which is still our winter, and plan to basically chase the sun around the world! “Oh boy… the ‘Bake Off’ was awful, I guarantee I wont be doing it again. It was just so stressful and I couldn’t do it. Put me in a room and ask me to find something funny… no problem. But ask me to measure sugar and flour in a cup and bake things at the right temperature and you can forget it. “I love the multicultural make up of Australia, meeting people from all the world, I can relate to that as my family were immigrants when they came to the UK. So many ethnic backgrounds, so many cultures that you have to come together. Of course being English, I won’t mention the cricket. Actually I will be talking about it… The Women’s Ashes victory!” Stephen K. Amos appears at the Brisbane Comedy Festival from March 18–23. Tickets at www.briscomfest.com.au Want to see Stephen K Amos on stage We have a double pass to see Stephen’s new show “What Does The K Stand For?” at 7pm on March 18. Interactivity the future of television? It’s that time of year when all the networks bring out the big guns and flood our screens with all our favourite shows after the long summer of Cricket and re-runs of National Lampoon movies, but amongst the new shows on offer right now is one that is shaping the future of TV. Taking interactivity with the viewer to new heights, the new six -part series ‘Secrets & Lies’ will allow viewers to solve the crime themselves, and it’s the aim of the makers to have everyone in the country trying to solve it. ‘Secrets & Lies’ begins with the murder of a child, and within the first ten minutes the police are suspecting the person who found the body. As the series goes on there are red herrings and everyone is a suspect. Even the actors weren’t aware until the final episode was filmed who the killer is. The show’s producer Nathan Mayfield from ‘Hoodlum’ has worked in this medium before, with his work on shows like ‘Lost’, he’s excited about how the Australian public will be able to join in the fun of solving the crime. “It comes down to good story, and I know it sounds a bit wanky, but it’s a cracker of a script. It’s such an amazing experience when you see the first draft come in and we knew there was a great series here,” Nathan said. “We took it to Ten the next day, and the process to get the go ahead normally takes several weeks, but within 24 hours they came back and said this show was a go, and that’s so unusual.” The actors were not given the final episode’s script until it was filmed, which met with a mixed reaction. “We purposely didn’t give the actors the ending. There are so many red herrings, pathways, and twists and turns in ‘Secrets & Lies’

that they all knew every character was capable of being the murderer. “Everyone is so authentic. I guess the genesis of the idea is ‘what would happen if this was your street?’ How would you react if the police thought you had done something bad? “Some of the actors liked that (not knowing), as they were asking questions and teasing clues out of us, and then there were some that felt they needed to know and it added to their performances. I found that really interesting. Once we revealed to them who it was we got such a mixed reaction from the actors. “We wrote three endings, and we knew the ending we wanted. We looked at ‘Twin Peaks’. That whole ‘who killed Laura Palmer’ was huge…the whole world was guessing. We learned from that and will make sure that with our ending your jaw will drop!” Secrets & Lies premieres on TEN on March 3 and content is already online at ten.com.au.

Meet the Principal One of the best ways to see a school in action, meet the staff and see the facilities, is to attend an open day, and on Saturday March 8, Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School including Ipswich Junior Grammar School will be opening the doors to all areas of the school for prospective families. “The opportunity for prospective parents and students to see the school in action is invaluable,” said Principal, Dr Peter Britton. “I would personally like to invite all members of the community to visit the school Open Day. “Current students will lead tours of the school’s wonderful facilities. Families will have the chance to meet senior staff and teachers, plus discuss the enrolment procedure with the Enrolments Registrar. “The School provides high quality educational programs for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. available to speak with them at ‘Meet the Principal’ sessions held throughout the day. Expansion coming to Junior School The Head of the Junior School, Mrs Karen McArdle, said that the School had recently made an application to educate boys in Years 5 and 6, to make the Junior School coeducational from Kindergarten through to the end of Year 6. “We want to offer a school that is suitable for families to bring both their boys and girls in the early years. Studies show that in the early years, children learn best through coeducation. “Boys and girls learn from each other, and they gain social maturity through play and shared learning. Coeducation in the early years allows boys and girls to excel in areas that interest them, whether it’s Music, Science or Mathematics. There are no gender barriers or stereotypes. “Our Year 6 students take the Junior School tours on Open Day. This gives prospective families a view from the students’ perspective

and also shows them how well-mannered, polite and knowledgeable our students are. What to Expect There will be lots happening on the day, across all areas of the school, on all levels including: *The Early Education Centre (EEC) will be showcasing their cutting-edge, co-educational facility catering to the needs of students in Kindergarten and Pre-Prep. The EEC enables younger children to reap the benefits of the Ipswich Junior Grammar School programs which are renowned for their excellence. *In the Junior School, speak to the teaching staff and meet Head of Junior School, Mrs Karen McArdle. View the purpose-built Junior School facilities, complete with Smart Boards in each classroom. *Experience the benefits of transitioning your daughter into Middle School, in Years 7 to 9. Learn about the specialist Middle School teachers and facilities, the ‘buddy’ program, and Pastoral Care which focuses on the individual needs of each girl. *Tour the modern Senior School facilities,

catering for students in Years 10 to 12. Visit the Centre for Young Women’s Health and Wellbeing, and meet the Pastoral Care staff. Learn about academic excellence at IGGS, where almost 100% of OP eligible IGGS graduates receive a tertiary offer, and 1 in 4 OP eligible graduates achieved an OP 1-5 in 2013. Grease set to rock Ipswich It’s the movie that Ipswich asked for, and to cope with the demand for the special screening of the ‘Grease: Singalong’ event, Limelight Cinemas are going to screen the movie in 3 cinemas and will expand to even more if required. Since the opening of the cinemas last year, Owner Ross Entwistle has wanted to bring classic movies to the big screen for a new generation, and maybe get some new fans. The first event was The Rocky Horror Picture Show, followed by Dirty Dancing and recently Pulp Fiction, but its ‘Grease’ that is the one Ipswich wanted to see. Limelight Classics coordinator Katrina Lee said that it was clear which movie people wanted to see, and the Ipswich public has spoken. “At each screening we ask people what movie they wanted to see on the big screen again, and the clear winner has been ‘Grease’,” Katrina said. “This version is a digitally remastered, specially produced version which will have the words on the screen with a little bouncy ball to encourage viewers to sing along. “We have some big plans for future screenings, and it’s great to have things like this for people to do in Ipswich. The response has been fantastic and we plan to do it at least once a month, but we want to know what Ipswich’s favourite movies are?”

Clean Up Australia this Sunday This Sunday is Clean Up Australia Day and I will once again be working with the Ipswich Baptist Church community who each year organise a Clean Up in Brassall. I can’t believe how quickly this annual event comes around. It seems like yesterday that I was carting what seemed like half a car body from one end of the clean-up site to the other! While it is without question hard and gritty work, I derive immense pleasure from working alongside friends and members of the community for a common cause. Getting out and about on a Sunday morning, helping to clean up our own community, is a simple yet satisfying way to conserve our precious environment. Clean Up Australia Day is not funded by the government and is a not for profit organisation. They therefore rely solely on volunteers and donations from individuals and businesses. Last year, Clean Up Australia Day managed to mobilise an estimated 550,300 volunteers who removed 16,150 tonnes of rubbish at 7,341 sites across Australia. This is an impressive result and I encourage residents to get involved themselves, either by volunteering on the day or by donation. You can find more information at www.cleanupaustraliaday. org.au. This Saturday, I am holding my weekly mobile office from 9am to 12 noon at the Winston Glades Shopping Centre, so if you’re in the area, please feel free to stop by and have a chat with me. Warm regards, Shayne Neumann Member for Blair

focus on education Learning the lesson about skin cancer Every now and then, things happen in life that make you stop and think. Such was the case for the Mayor Paul Pisasale who is spreading the word to men about getting their skin checked. It was at the official opening of the new Ipswich Skin Cancer Clinic recently that Cr Pisasale was talking to Dr Damien Foong, and asked him to have a quick look at a spot above the eyebrow. After further investigation, it was found to be skin cancer, and Mayor Pisasale returned just 72 hours later to get it cut out, resulting in 4 internal and 12 external stitches… not a pretty sight just before a talking engagement in Bundaberg, but he’s glad that it was found in time. “It was amazing, it only took about an hour,” Paul said. “I’m just glad it was done, because you spend so much time putting things like this off. There’s always a reason not to get your skin checked. “ “I went to the opening at Brassall Shopping Centre and saw the clinic and all the new technology there. I honestly just said to Damien ‘could you have a look at this thing that’s annoying me?’ “He took one look and said ‘Holy smokes!’. “I’d never had a check up till now, I’m always too busy, but not any more. I’m going to get a check up every six months, because you know what… blokes are blokes. They find time to go to the footy, but never time to get their skin checked. “Women are smarter about these things, they make time to get things checked out,

but us blokes really need a push. “I don’t just want a happy city, I want a healthy city. Doesn’t matter if you’re the Mayor, the PM or anyone, get a checkup. It only takes five minutes, and its covered by Medicare.” Paul, like most people of his generation, didn’t know anything about skin cancer as a child. As he said, there was no such thing as ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ in his day, and its only in the last 30 years that things have changed to the point now where every school has a ‘SunSafe’ policy, teaching Queenslanders at an early age about the dangers to exposure to the sun. “We have plenty of sun in Ipswich, and as a kid you just got sunburnt, you peeled and then went back outside again. “When I got home and told Janet about this she replied ‘I’ve been telling you for ages to do that’, but my daughter was worse, she gave me a really hard time about it.” Sounds like a case of ‘Lesson Learnt’ Mr Mayor… Below: Mayor Pisasale about to go under the knife with Dr Damien Foong and Melissa Davies from Ipswich Skin Cancer Clinic.

Ipswich Grammar School celebrates 150 years of Education Ipswich Grammar School (IGS) has been dedicated to boys’ education for more than 150 years. As Queensland’s first secondary school and Australia’s second grammar school, IGS is a non-denominational day and boarding school for students from Prep to Year 12. IGS now offers GPS sports and activities for years 5 to 12, further enhancing one of Queensland’s most respected extracurricular programs. IGS Headmaster/CEO Mr Robert Henderson said single sex schooling from Prep to Year 12 helped to ensure a complete education for all students. “We’re very proud to offer a full learning experience on one campus,” he said. “We have a dedicated Junior School, Middle School and Senior

School, so students can remain settled at one location for the full 12 years of their education.” Mr Henderson said IGS graduates were responsible, creative, enterprising and happy members of society. “Participation and interaction in and out of the classroom is very important. It develops well-rounded young men who are leaders, teammates and friends,” he said. “This is the tradition that IGS has become known for, and it is a tradition that we will continue for many years to come.” Phone (07) 3813 9600 or visit www. ipswichgrammar.com for more information on an accessible, affordable and achievable Ipswich Grammar School education.

Training solutions for new careers After 30 years in the Transport industry, a back injury forced Les Hill to reconsider a new career path, and it was a choice that will change the lives of people who come across Les in the future. Hill Training Solutions, conveniently located in the Ipswich Mall above Bank of Queensland offers courses in First Aid, Security, Sales, and Management. Once of the fastest growing segments for Les is the demand for qualified, fully licenced security staff, and at Hill Training Solutions you can get all you need for a career in security. “Thirty years in the Transport industry taught me a lot about safety, security and what training is needed these days to get staff qualified for many industries”, Les Hill said. “There is a big demand for security at the moment for example, and staff need to be qualified before they can get work. We’ve got the G20 Summit, and the Commonwealth Games coming up, so there is future growth there in that industry alone, and Hill Training Solutions can get you the qualifications you need. “In security, you can be in a job for a month and then out of work, but with the right qualifications you’re off straight away to the next job, it’s an industry that offers lots of variety. “We also offer all the First Aid, CPR and Safety training classes that are a requirement of many jobs today. We actually know what we’re doing, and we continue to give

support to many people who have finished their courses. The best thing is we make learning exciting and welcome feedback and suggestions from our clients! “Each course is evaluated and we follow up with each delegate after the program. We constantly improve and update all of our courses and provide an outstanding professional service,” Les added. “There is heaps of work out there, and we will give our clients the support and encouragement to get out there and make a difference.’ The Hill Training Solutions training rooms are conveniently located above the Ipswich Mall, with ample parking and easy access to public transport. focus on education Making a positive difference at The Springfield Anglican College 2014 is shaping up as a very exciting year for The Springfield Anglican College. This year the College has set a theme for the year that will be rolled out in a variety of ways. The theme is “2014 the year of making a positive difference”. As an academically non-selective College with a holistic approach to education this theme will provide a wonderful framework for activity across the College. The 2013 OP results provided an exceptionally pleasing start to 2014. 29%, of the OP eligible students, achieved in the OP 1-5 Band, 63% in the OP 1-10 band and 83% in the OP 1-15 band; in each case well above State average and importantly enabling the vast majority of students to gain their first choice of preferred university course. The College commenced the year with 816 students from Prep to Year Twelve, with The Tiny Tartan Kindergarten at capacity with 88 places filled. The College is rapidly closing on its upper limit of 1,000 students from Prep to Year Twelve. The reason for capping number is based on a desire to ensure each student can receive the individual attention they deserve. In term Two the College will undertake a significant building programme that will

transform the Senior Campus. During the year, ready for occupation in January 2015, the College will construct a Creative Arts Precinct, a Year Seven and Language Classroom block and change facilities. Steve Croft Head of College

Enrol now for 2014

Exciting year ahead for Brisbane Catholic Education An historic year began for Years 6 and 7 students who returned to Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE)’s community of schools with the transition from Year 7 to secondary gathering pace. For Year 6 students, this will be their final year of primary school while for the Year 7 students, some who were also the first cohort of Prep students in Queensland, they will be the last ever Year 7 students to attend primary school. BCE’s Senior Project Officer – Year 7 to Secondary, Ian Davis, said preparations for the big shift in 2015 was well advanced and would gather further momentum during the year. Ian said the change was an exciting, once in a life time opportunity to further enhance the quality of education in every one of BCE’s primary, secondary and P-12 schools from

Childers in the north, south to the Gold Coast and west to Kingaroy. “Buildings will be finished on time, Year 7 enrolments for many of our colleges will begin this term and at the end of the term, our secondary and P-12 colleges will begin employing staff for 2015,” he said. Catholic schools now educate almost one in five Queensland children. For more information about a Catholic school near you or an enrolment pack visit www. brisbanecatholicschools.com.au or call (07) 3033 7000.

Claver’s new facilities create opportunities St Peter Claver College is building a school for students now and into the future. A newly completed Visual Arts Centre, recently constructed Trade Training Centre and a purpose built Middle Years Learning Centre are among the most recent major building programs happening at St Peter Claver College. The new Visual Arts Centre includes three Art studios, a gallery to display student’s work, a computer graphics lab, state-of-the art kiln and an outdoor undercover studio. “Expression through visual art is a major focus area for our contemporary learners. Our emphasis on the Arts is part of a program we call ‘Claver Creative’ where students are able to collaborate in Dance, Music, Drama, Design and Visual Arts. Our new facility will strengthen and grow the program further”, according to Mr Diarmuid O’Riordan, Principal of St Peter Claver College. In 2014 the College will officially open its Trade Training Centre in Construction. Students in Years 11 and 12 will be able to complete qualifications in seven construction trade areas including carpentry, brick-laying, plumbing, plastering, roofing, tiling and painting. “These trade skills will give our students priority entry into the workplace”, according to Mr O’Riordan. “Ipswich is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia with a population expected to double in the next 20 years. Who best to build the

infrastructure to accommodate this growth, but our students today?” In readiness for Year 7 moving to secondary in 2015, the College will construct a $2.8m Middle Years Learning Centre. It will consist of seven learning areas including four classrooms, a Science laboratory and two flexible learning spaces where students will be able to study Music, Drama, Textiles and Cooking. “This will be a very different learning space catering for the specific needs of students in the Middle Years. We wanted to create a learning space that is flexible, vibrant and contemporary, a place where our Year 7s particularly will experience a sense of identity and belonging,” Mr O’Riordan said. St Peter Claver College is a Catholic coeducational college situated at the intersection of the Cunningham Highway, Ipswich Motorway and Warrego Highway. Conveniently located close to Dinmore railway station and offering a sponsored bus service, Claver is in a beautiful bush setting. The College welcomes Enrolment Enquiries for 2015 and beyond.

Brothers staff put smile on Shari Williams face Ipswich Special School student Shari Williams will be receiving a new wheelchair thanks to the staff and management at Brothers Leagues Club. With the 10 year old growing fast, she’s outgrown her current chair and new ones cost around the $5,000 mark. But customers and staff at Brothers decided to chip in, and have given the family a sum of $1337 which was what they needed to get over the line. The donation was recently presented by Brothers General Manager Mark Hennelly at Ipswich Special School. “Our staff chose the Ipswich Special School for a fundraiser and the school suggested that Shari would be perfect for this as government funding doesn’t cover everything,” Mr Hennelly said. “Each month our staff choose what they want to support, and tins are put around the club, it was the staff’s idea and we are happy to keep it going. If it’s a good cause we are happy as a club to chip in. It could be wear a colour day or something like that, but the staff get right behind it and as a manager, its fantastic for morale. Most of our staff live in Ipswich, and they want to have an involvement in our community,” Mr Hennelly added.

Ipswich Special School Principal Bruce Grigg said Brothers has been a great support to Ipswich schools. “Brothers has been really supportive of our school, along with other schools in Ipswich and we are so appreciative of their support. We go to Brothers for our Christmas parties, our graduations, so we’re happy to continue our great relationship.” Shari suffers from a rare disorder called ‘agenesis of the corpus callosum’ (ACC) which is absence of a part of the brain that links the left and right side. Shari’s Teacher Trish Turner said that one of the best facilities at the school is the heated pool which allows Shari to walk in the water. “She can crawl on the floor, but for her to walk independently in the water is something that we all take for granted, can you imagine how that feels for her? She has good independent movement of her limbs but it’s affected her ability to balance and walk independently, ” Trish added. “This month the staff have decided to support Rural Fire Service,” Mr Hennelly added. Her two-year-old twins Morrocan and Munroe feature on one of the songs. Carey recorded their vocals on her mobile phone. The new album is due out in May. J.K Rowling is set to publish her second crime novel “The Silkworm” in June – also under the pen name of Robert Galbraith. The first novel in the series “The Cuckoo’s Calling” was outed as really being written by Rowling late last year, and then enjoyed soaring sales.

Rockers AC/DC (above) have announced they plan on performing 40 shows to mark their 40th anniversary as a band and that they are planning on recording a new album in May, which will be their first new album in 5 years. Brian Johnson said: “It’s been 40 years of the band’s existence, so I think we’re gonna try to do 40 gigs, 40 shows, to thank the fans for their undying loyalty. I mean, honestly, our fans are just the best in the world, and we appreciate every one of them.”

INXS made chart history when their Very Best of compilation hit the number 1 spot on the charts. Their previous number 1 album as ‘X’ in 1990 which means the 24 year range between number 1’s marks the longest break between #1 albums by an Australian artist, ever. It’s not the only INXS album to reenter the charts however, Kick, Live At Wembley Stadium 1991, Shabooh Shoobah, The Swing and Listen Like Thieves have also cracked the top 100. Talking Beer WITH PETER COULTAS AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

4o Hearts Pale Ale Times are changing in the world of craft beer and the Yamanto Tavern has been behind a local hero of craft beer in Wade Curtis who has, for a few years now been a main feature on the taps. Attempting to push the big names in Australian beer is no easy feat but the Peak Crossing resident rose to the challenge and now has a foot hold in Brisbane craft beer bars. This being topped off by holding a tap takeover during the Brisbane Craft Beer Rising event on the 22nd of February. The event ran at Brewski on Caxton all day Saturday. Featuring of course his staple beer the 4 Degrees Pale Ale, as well a few of his more abstract brews which are sure to satisfy. For those who have not tried his pale ale you will soon get a chance not only to enjoy at the Alehouse and Yamanto Tavern for Wade will be making

available packaged versions of the beer for your enjoyment at home. The American Style Pale Ale comes in at a reasonable 5% and has a beautifully strong bitter finish as a pale ale should, as well as a balance between fruity hops and a dryer full on taste. From a small brewer this is a breath of fresh air for all to enjoy and get behind instead of sticking to the mainstreams why not take a chance on something that is brewed simply to be enjoyed.

We just keep getting better

Sin, Sex and the CIA is the first production at the Incinerator Theatre for 2014. Written by Michael and Susan Parker, this exceptionally funny comedy is directed by Doug Moses and Sheryl Roche. The story is set in the Chagos Islands where huge oil reserves have been discovered. The islanders seek the protection of the USA. OPEC is out to ensure they get control of the reserves. A meeting is set up between the two government representatives in a safe house under the protection of a very young and incompetent CIA agent, Luke. OPEC operatives are sent to derail the meeting. All sorts of characters arrive at the safe house, some expected and many unexpected, creating a mad house of confusion and fake or mistaken identities. The enthusiastic but hopeless Luke tries to control things but it ends up in total chaos. Take an ordinary situation, add much bumbling and physical mishaps, combine interesting characters and a complex plot then add numerous one liners and double entendres, and you have a recipe for 2 hours of hilarious laughter. Heartfelt welcome home for modern day ‘Diggers’ A welcome home parade at RAAF Base Amberley has recognised and celebrated the return of more than 100 Air Force personnel who served at the Multi National Base – Tarin Kot MNB-TK in Afghanistan. Minister for Defence Senator David Johnston said Australia’s mission in Uruzgan has drawn to a close, in line with the transition strategy agreed by the international community and the Government of Afghanistan. “Our focus will now be on providing support and assistance to Afghanistan at the national level,” he said. Families of returning personnel were informally presented with Military Kids/ Partners Deployment Recognition Medallions in recognition of the sacrifices they made during the deployment of their loved ones. Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Geoff Brown said the return of personnel coincided with the transition of responsibility for base to the Government of Afghanistan. “MNB-TK Command and Security Force personnel provided a critical air base capability while simultaneously preparing the base for the handover to Afghanistan authorities,” Air Marshal Brown said. “I also acknowledge the valuable support of our Air Force families who have made great sacrifices so that our serving members can deploy and serve abroad.

“Since July 2010, Air Force has deployed 320 airbase operations personnel to MNB-TK. They have ensured that the base ran smoothly, providing security, logistics and engineering support to enable safe aircraft operations,” Air Marshal Brown said. The welcome home parade provided formal recognition to personnel and their families who returned to Australia in December 2013. With the market showing positive signs of stabilization, confidence has finally come back for the Ipswich property owners and home buyers. This is good news for everyone, especially those you purchased a property after 2009. I hate it when I get called out for an appraisal and have to give the owners a reality check on what their properties is worth, especially if they purchased in the past 3-4 years. If there’s been no real capital improvement over this period chances are it’s probably not worth much more that what they purchased it for. This is where the “confidence part” comes into play. The market hasn’t changed to a

sellers’ market just yet but the indicators are there to show that the buyers are proceeding with confidence and investing back into bricks & mortar. Best way to see it for yourself is take a closer look when you’re driving around, you will notice there are more SOLD signs going up. Also the house you admired in the paper last week probably doesn’t appear again this week. Real-estate (property) is similar to most other products or services and is governed by similar principals, good old supply and demand’. Now is the time to buy in Ipswich! The Reserve Bank has made its first decision of the year on interest rates. The 2.5 per cent cash rate will remain, and according to the RBA Governor Glenn Stevens, our economy is suited to low interest rates for the time being. Retirees and pre-retirees with low-risk investments may have to look at higher yielding investments given that cash is earning around 1 per cent over inflation. But those in the wealth-building phase have a chance to use the low rates to their advantage. Lower interest rates reduce the overall cost of capital; they allow you to accelerate debt repayment, meaning you can build equity and wealth faster. The current interest rate environment has increased competition among lenders. So if you’re seeking a new mortgage, do not simply sign up with your current bank or building society. Look around and use the comparison websites because you’ll see at least a1 per cent gap between the most expensive and most affordable home loans — a noticeable difference once you’re repaying the loan. Also, when you get down to a short list of lenders, insist on knowing their ‘comparison rate’. This is a legal formula which gives you the true cost of a loan and allows you to compare apples with apples. And understand that a loan promising a

‘discount’ on an interest rate falls outside the comparison rate law. It could mean anything. With low interest rates forcing competition among lenders, price is not the only factor: And what about refinancing? If you have a mortgage you’ll be targeted by many organizations wanting you to refinance with them, and my advice is to get the loan offer in writing and then work out if all the pluses and minuses make it worth shifting. This is a decision you have to understand yourself and there’s no substitute for a pen, pad and a calculator. Refinancing doesn’t stop with mortgages: you can fold credit card debt and personal loans into your low-cost mortgage and be paying much less for the debt. Finally, what to do with fixed versus variable? It’s tempting to lock-in a mortgage at a low rate for three years. Some people like the certainty, and you can save money if variable interest rates rise above your fixed rate. But the banks don’t offer 3-year fixed loans so close to their variable mortgage rates if they think the cash rate will rise soon. And don’t forget that most fixed-rate mortgages lack the flexibility to make extra repayments, thus removing an option to pay less interest. Designers and engineers have crafted a larger and more elegant exterior with greater on-road presence and an upscale interior that provides more space, comfort and practicality. The most significant advance is a 100mm increase in the length between the front and rear wheels, providing greater design freedom that results in a more expressive body with dynamic proportions. Driving feel has been enhanced through a lower centre of gravity, lighter yet more rigid body structure and by pushing the wheels closer to the corners of the car. Toyota’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the new sedan is destined to build on the success of Corolla as Australia’s best-selling car in 2013. “New Corolla - with its more stylish exterior, premium interior and fun-to-drive dynamics for both the sedan and hatch - demonstrates that Toyota is capturing greater energy and emotion in its cars,” Mr Cramb said. “At the same time, Corolla is expanding its legendary reputation for reliability with enhanced quality, expanded safety features and impressive value for money. “This combination of emotional and rational factors for purchasing Corolla are set to extend its position as the world’s best-selling car with more than 40 million sales over 47 years, and Toyota’s bestselling model in Australia with 1.25 million customers.” Every Corolla is fitted with a 6.1-inch LCD touch-screen display with Bluetooth connectivity, an AM/FM tuner, single CD player, USB+ and iPod inputs as well as an auxiliary jack.

Toyota Link allows drivers to access informative content without touching their phone. Corolla sedan is covered by capped-price servicing, Toyota Service Advantage##, at a maximum of $130 per service. For more information on this and all things Toyota, contact local dealer Llewellyns on 3282 2922.
