WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE

Finding the best in Burlesque There’s a revolution going on around the country, and it’s getting everyday women onto stage and expressing themselves in a way that is turning heads. It’s called ‘Burlesque’, and right now there is an entire community of women who are gearing up to compete for the title of ‘Miss Burlesque Australia’. Demand to compete is so big that the Queensland titles are being held over two locations this weekend, with the finalists off to Melbourne in November to compete for $20,000 in prize money. Ipswich Life spoke to three girls who are

deep in preparation for the titles including local lady Katrina Lee from Raceview (who goes under the name ‘Melody Bon Bon’), along with two other Burlesque performers who go by the names ‘Eva Vivacia’ and ‘Cin De-Lite’, both from Brisbane. To them, Burlesque is all about being confident in the body you inhabit. Having an audience in the palm of their hand is the goal, and while it has a long tradition, the artform has gone through a revolution over the last few years, all thanks to a moderately successful movie in 2010 that starred Cher and Christina Aguilera. As Eva explains, it can involve comedy and so much more. “I’d describe Burlesque best as the ‘art of tease’. Burlesque started so long ago that nobody can make a claim to it any more, in fact the word ‘Burlesque’ comes from the Italian term ‘burlesco’, derived from ‘burla ‘– meaning a joke, ridicule or mockery. “Burlesque today incorporates elements of striptease but it can also be a parody of modern concepts, be it a song, a current affair or a tale that adult audiences can relate to. Burlesque is essentially an unlimited cabaret,” Eva said. “It’s about looking at someone with body confidence, and wanting to be like that. It’s a great feeling. I do this for me, and I just hope I can bring people along for the ride, and they go home happy.” Katrina said that to get through the heats, each contestant needs to bring their A-game, with three very different performances. “You have to do three routines, each with strict criteria. The first is Classic Burlesque where you have to look like you stepped out of a pre 1960’s movie and be true to that era. “The second is Modern Burlesque when

you bring all the modern elements, where you have to tell a story and it must inject humour. The third is anything you want to do,” Katrina said. “There may be girls hanging from the ceiling, or hula hooping or using fire…anything at all.” So why the explosion of interest in Burlesque? “I would thank the movie, as it did cause a lot of interest,” Katrina said. “People like Pink, and Dita Von Teese who are so popular now, both use elements of Burlesque in their performances. As unpopular as this may sound, while ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ opened peoples eyes, the movie ‘Burlesque’ did the same, as it gave women the outlet and the chance to feel body confident in themselves, and to simply love themselves for who they are.” Ms ‘Cin De-Lite’ said that it is a fantastic feeling being on stage and winning over an audience. “I love those people in the audience who are sitting there with arms folded, and I have three minutes to turn them around, as by the end I’ve changed the world a little bit for the better. “I don’t have a dance background, but just by going to a dance school or Burlesque classes, you can learn all the basic moves. “There’s nothing like having that audience in the palm of your hand, and when they get really loud and laugh it’s such a boost.

“Like any competition it can be as expensive as you want it to be, you can spend thousands if you want but it comes down to the routine you do, if you don’t have that right a ten thousand dollar dress will make no difference,” she said. So what do their partners think of all this parading on stage? “My husband loves it,” Katrina said. “He likes me being on stage and seeing me up there, he’s so proud. He has his own hobbies, and I have mine, which just happens to be Burlesque. It’s just a hobby, but a heap of fun and it keeps us very busy.” The Miss Burlesque championships are on this weekend. Grant Denyer revives a classic There’s something about game shows that we as a nation love. No matter what age you are, we all have fond memories of The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune or Sale of The Century. So why not bring back a show that we all also remember over the years, and is still screening in over fifty countries around the world? Grant Denyer is returning to the network where he began his career, as ‘Family Fued’ returns to screens this week at the 6pm timeslot where it is aimed to reach an audience that may be suffering from ‘news overload’. Grant, in his guise as a V8 driver, knows Ipswich well, and was excited to hear from Ipswich Life. “Oh I know Ipswich very well” Grant said . “I’ve pumped just a few laps around Willowbank over the years. If I added up all the tests, races, the sponsor laps and practice laps it would add up to several thousand kilometres I’ve done in Ippy. To be honest, I really miss it. I took time out from racing to concentrate on TV, and its really good for my mental health in the past doing the driving.” Grant became best known for his stint on Sunrise as the weatherman who travelled the length and breadth of Australia for six years, but when asked what his favourite spot is in this big brown land, the answer was one you wouldn’t expect. “That’s easy… home! My favourite place is home, without a doubt. Look, I’ve lived the ultimate lifestyle, travelling this country, doing outrageous things in amazing places and got paid to do it. “Its not a healthy way to live, but I’m so glad I did it. That kind of living has a shelf life though. There is nothing normal about getting up at 3am, especially when you’re in a different bed each night. I’ve struggled to adapt as I’m so used to being on the go and terrible at sitting still, that I’ve had to practice staying home. “I’ve had good opportunities offered to me, and that’s the thing these days in TV… there aren’t too many 30 year careers any more like Ray Martin or Bert Newton. It’s a high turnaround industry with short runs and new ideas, so I’m grateful to have what I have. I’ve made good decisions, and had great

opportunities. “Peter Meakin, my old boss, is the person who got me back to Ten. He doesn’t make too many bad decisions, he’s like a Godfather in TV to me. He knew my contract was up, he contacted me, and told me that he had the idea for ‘Family Fued’. You never say no to Peter as he’s always given things a lot of thought. “I do take comfort in knowing that the network I’m going to is currently going through change. This show is a format that I think suits my skills a lot better. It stretches me in a way I want to go. I like the challenge of the time slot, I like the fact that Ten are having a go, and I think this show is really me, in that there is a heaps of improvisation. You’re really just playing with great Aussie families, which is what I did a lot on Sunrise. I’m not there to change lives, we’re just having fun,” Grant said. “Family Fued is such a beautifully simple format, we just stand there, have a few giggles and let families make some dough.“ The show is screening at the coveted 6pm timeslot, which for decades has been ruled by the networks screening news, and Grant is excited to give people an alternative. “I think we do suffer from a bit of news overload, we can try too hard in formats sometimes. Not everything has to be big, important and super shiny, and Family Feud is the complete opposite of that. You need a break from all that news, and this is the answer.” Ipswich Life was keen to know if Grant, a die hard rev-head has a choice when it comes to racing video games (we love our games at Ipswich Life)…so what do former drivers play? “I play racing games a lot. ‘Gran Turismo’ is my choice. I was going to do a race at Nurmberg Ring in Germany and there are over 124 corners over the 24 km track. There was no way I was going to learn it, as it would take a year of driving around it, so I got on Gran Turismo and I learnt it that way. We finished sixth! Who said you don’t’ learn anything from video games?” ‘Family Fued’ screens 6pm weeknights on TEN.

Forty-eight local singers will be taking part in the production, all of whom went through a rigorous audition process that began in March as part of the company’s ‘Project Puccini’. In a world-first, hundreds of Queenslanders were given the opportunity to perform in the chorus of a brand new production of Puccini’s La bohème. A total of forty eight locals, including twelve children have been undergoing a rigorous rehearsal period, which will culminate in the performance of La bohème on Tuesday August 12th at the Ipswich Civic Centre. Opera Queensland has engaged a chorus

master and rehearsal co-ordinator from each region (nine around the state) and is working with local arts centres, theatres, councils and sponsors to ensure the highest standard of performance and personal development opportunities for budding local artists. An intensive 10-week development program is now underway, equipping participants with improved music and drama skills, not to mention the thrill of performing on stage alongside seasoned professionals. Popular conductor Guy Noble directs an ensemble of thirteen musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in this production starring some of Queensland’s most exciting young singers as a group of rent-dodging flatmates living and loving precariously on the edge of society. Shaun Brown, well known to Ipswich audiences, plays the pivotal role of the painter Marcello in the production. He said that the addition of local singers to the production is something he hopes will happen more often in future. “Opera Queensland tries to tour every second year, but this is the first time we’ve used local singers in the show,” Shaun said. “The best part is friends and family coming

“These bohemians are like any young people in love, they are fearless and wear their hearts on their sleeves - it is impossible to leave the theatre without being touched. “Plus I am thrilled to provide opportunities for everyday people to perform in a professional opera in front of their family and yes, we are going to make it snow in Ipswich!” Lindy Hume Opera Queensland Artistic Director to see the local singers. I do hope that this happens again….especially in places like Ipswich, and I’m not saying that because I have a connection with the place, but it’s been really invigorating. The more people that get involved in what we do, the easier it is to create the next generation of opera fans.” So how does Shaun explain La bohème in his own words? “The best way to describe this is as a love story between two very different couples. It has a sad ending, but there is a lot of humour in the opera, and it’s such a great production that I think the audiences will love it. “It has remained popular because it has so many great melodies. It’s widely regarded as one of the five most popular operas of all time. “We rehearse for about four weeks, and then have a week in the theatre, and it’s really like training for a grand final. There’s a lot of energy and emotion. It might look simple but its really quite complex bringing all the props, lighting and singing together on stage at once. All aspects of the performing arts are contained in

opera in just the one performance!” La bohème will be presented with surtitles, along with a range of complimentary extras to make this a very special night in the Ipswich arts and social calendar. Set in Bohemian Paris, the evening will have a distinct French flavour, with exciting French themed pre-show entertainment in the foyer, an expert pre-performance talk on the opera in the Cunningham Room, the provision of a program offering information on Opera Queensland, the production and the artists, plus there will be a ‘Meet and Greet’ with the cast after the performance. There will also be the opportunity to purchase separately a fine French meal prior to the performance, provided by Stars Café. La bohème is on for one show only, Tuesday August 12th at 7.30pm. For more information or to book tickets visit www. ipswichciviccentre.com.au or phone the box office on 3810 6100.

The making of La bohème The upcoming production of La bohème has been a year in the making, with OperaQ working closely with Ipswich Civic Centre and Ipswich City Council in ‘Project Puccini’, a world first initiative which has given hundreds of everyday people across eight regional cities the opportunity to be professionally trained and sing and act in the much-loved opera.

Mayor delivers budget Choat’sChat “for the future of Ipswich” With Sean Choat MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH WEST

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has handed down his eleventh budget, with a goal of building infrastructure across Ipswich to get the city ready for the future, but this means there’s pain with the gain - the inevitable rate rise to pay for it. The good news is that the rate rise is only $1.30 a week, a total of $67.60 a year, but while any price rise is not good news for anyone, the $373 million budget will invest in building and planning for the future. “A discount of $30 will apply for payments made in full by the due date,” Mayor Pisasale said at the budget announcement in Redbank. “Full aged pension recipients also receive remissions of up to $245 per annum and the weekly garbage and fortnightly recycling services will be 87 cents per day or $316 per year.” Cr Pisasale added that actions taken during recent years had enabled a budget surplus in 2014-2015 of $1.6 million. “We wanted to make sure we bring down a budget that will position us for future years and make sure that it is a budget for Ipswich and its people that does not reduce services. “Residents expect that we will continue to keep up with the demands for new infrastructure, improve services and get the best value for every dollar spent. “Ipswich is in the box seat to capitalise on the

next major growth phase. This budget gives the city the flexibility and capacity to meet population growth,” he added. Deputy Mayor Victor Attwood said council was firmly focussed on increased efficiencies and delivering maximum value. “We will continue to invest in roads, bridges, parks, community amenities and facilities. “One project worthy of mention in the budget and of citywide significance is construction of the missing link of Collingwood Drive between Collingwood Park and Redbank Plains Road at a cost of $6.5 million. “Another is the three year plan to upgrade Redbank Plains Road between Keidges and School roads at a cost of $20 million.” Cr Attwood added that rates alone did not cover the full operations of council and did not pay for new suburbs. “The development industry is also expected to pay its way,” he said. “While bricks and mortar infrastructure is important, we also have an eye on the future improving and enhancing digital services. “Part of those improvements includes a significant upgrade of council’s website which will be revealed in a few weeks. “More residents are relying on online services to access information, make payments and send enquiries and, as an organisation, we need to continue evolving as technology changes. “As well as a new website that will be easier to navigate, we’ll be going online with our service request system during the 2014-15 year as we modernise our IT platforms to take advantage of social media as another means to receive enquiries and requests for service from the community.” Popular programs like the Free Plant Program will continue, along with planning for a new library in Rosewood, the free graffiti clean up kits, and the new lagoon at Robelle Domain in Springfield which Mayor Pisasale says will be “as good as, if not better than South Bank.”

Law & Order The Government is committed to Queensland being the safest place to live and raise a family. This month an additional 93 Queensland Police Officers have been deployed around the State. Ipswich will benefit from an additional 8 officers in this round in addition to the 77 already delivered, bringing a grand total of 85 new police officers to Ipswich since the March 2012 election. Many of you have told me you were sick of criminal activity and it’s evident the increased numbers of police have really made a huge difference. The latest reporting period shows a 22% drop in Unlawful Entry (burglary, break and enter) and a 33% drop in Robberies (armed robbery, assault with intent) in our District. These figures show the Government’s strong plan for Queensland really is delivering safer streets for Ipswich. Be sure to congratulate our police officers when you see them as they are really doing a great job.

Breast Cancer Awareness Breast Cancer is an all-too-common form of cancer affecting women, but also some men. Last week I attended a funeral for someone taken by Breast Cancer and I wanted to share this with you in the hope it might prompt people to think about their own health. Recently my cousin Davena lost her battle with this cruel disease. She was only 47 and leaves behind three young children. Had this been detected earlier through either a mammogram or simple self-examination, Davena may not have lost her life. The best defence against cancer is early detection. PLEASE, if something doesn’t look or feel right, consult your doctor and talk to your GP about mammograms and selfexamination, regardless of your age. I’m a big supporter of the wonderful Lowood Slimmers – they do so much in our region to fund Breast Cancer research. Please join me in supporting the Slimmers again this year and let’s help find a cure! They have a breast cancer walkathon in August which is always a lot of fun with teams and individuals dressing in pink and enjoying a great day. Please contact my office for details. You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced with the kids or the grandkids.

Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough anti-inflammatories, narcotics or other pain pill. But if you mask the pain, it can prevent your back from healing – maybe even damage it further. Many of the pain medications available are quite addictive and can have devastating side effects like heart attacks, gastric haemorrhage or kidney failure.

Awards and Awakenings Final shows are coming up for two one-act plays at the Incinerator Theatre stages by Ipswich Little Theatre Society. The shows have the theme ‘Awards and Awakenings”. There are two one act plays, ‘Roses are Red, My Love’ by Pat Woods and ‘A Kind of Alaska’ by Harold Pinter. Both plays are directed by Les Chappell and Desley Cronon.

Roses are Red, My Love This is a funny short play about two old dears competing for prizes in the local Garden Club but someone is killing off people in the village, very regularly. The audience is kept in suspense right to the last moment. Rated PG

A Kind of Alaska This play was inspired by Dr Oliver Sacks’ account of his work with patients suffering from sleeping sickness in his book “Awakenings”. Deborah was a pert, lively 16

year old and part of a close-knit family when her body froze into a state of immobility. Twenty-nine years later, watched over throughout by the same doctor, she comes to life and gradually and poignantly tries to adjust to the world around her still with the mind of a 16 year old: the doctor, the death of her Mother, her ageing sister and her ageing body. Rated PG Public performances are 18,19 July at 8pm. Book online www.ipswichlittletheatre.com. au or at the Ipswich Visitors Information Centre in person 14 Queen Victoria Parade, Ipswich or by phone on 3281 0555.

St Edmund’s College – Part of the Ipswich Community

EDUCATION Choosing the right school For parents, choosing a school is as easy as geography – the one closest to home is the right one. For others, school selection can be a more complicated decision. Decisions about where your child goes to school are very personal, and can be difficult. It’s common and normal for parents to feel anxious about getting this decision right. For some parents, the decision is simple. Their children go to the local public school – the school in the same government zone as their house. Other parents might want to look further afield at other government schools (‘out-of area’ schools) or private schools. If you’re looking beyond the local public school, think about what will work best for your child’s characteristics, personality, strengths, needs and interests. You might also consider how different schools’ cultures and values sit with your values and family life. Other factors you could take into account: - the facilities the school has to support your child’s learning – such as playgrounds, library, home language support, music programs, clubs and sporting teams - opportunities for parent and family involvement with the school, - school size and number of children enrolled

10 IPSWICHLIFE

- the school’s religious affiliation - the location of the school - connection with the local community - previous academic results or performance in other areas, such as the arts, sport. Every school has strengths that can enhance your child’s experience of school. Getting to know those strengths will be of benefit. These questions might help you decide which secondary school is best for your child: What are the school’s admission procedures and entrance requirements? Are the school fees affordable? What study paths are available to your child? Does the culture of the school match your family’s values? What does your child want to do – based on opportunities provided by the school, career aspirations, motivations and so on? Are there any scholarship programs available to your child, and is your child eligible? What languages and elective subjects does the school offer? How many subjects are available in the senior years? What extracurricular activities – sport, art, music, drama and so on – are available? Does the school offer extension or accelerated learning programs for children?

St Edmund’s College, an inclusive Catholic community, enriched by Ipswich culture and grounded in the Edmund Rice Tradition, educates and inspires young men to live simply and to make a difference. The College has undergone a big transformation of late, with year seven’s joining the College from next year, a new learning centre is under construction to give the College added facilities which will keep it at the forefront of schools in the Ipswich region. One of the strengths at Eddies is our learning programme, and settling new students into the College through mentoring. The senior students are the ones who welcome the years seven and eight boys to the College on their first few days, because we are one community. Technology is embraced at St Edmund’s through teaching and learning, and students obtain a laptop on arrival and this supports their learning. To find out more about this vibrant College with a tradition of High Expectations, Clear Structures, Strong focus on core Numeracy and Literacy skills, and exceptional opportunities in: music and drama, the instrumental program, arts, debating, sports and leadership

New library hours take effect

EDUCATION Local school teachers take out Excellence in Teaching Awards Outstanding teachers were recognised at Brisbane Catholic Education’s inaugural ‘Excellence in Teaching Awards’. More than thirty finalists from almost two hundred nominations for the new awards that recognise excellence in learning and teaching, gathered to witness Archbishop Mark Coleridge and BCE Executive Director Pam Betts congratulate the winners. Liam Beatty from St Augustine’s College, Augustine Heights, was presented with the Excellence as a Beginning Teacher award while Paul Mackay from St Peter Claver College, Riverview, received the Excellence in Leadership for Learning and Teaching Award. Ms Betts said it was important in life to acknowledge those who shine in their endeavours. “Too often in our society we focus on the negative rather than the positive and there is so much positive in our teachers to celebrate,” she said. Ms Betts said teaching was a wonderful career choice. “Teachers have a pivotal role in creating the right conditions and opportunities to encourage learning.

“They also help build the future by providing opportunities for positive outcomes in the lives of young people today,” she said. She thanked sponsors TUH (Teachers Union Health), QTMB (Queensland Teachers Mutual Bank) and ACU (Australian Catholic University) for their support. The awards will now become an annual event. For more information about a Catholic school near you or an enrolment pack visit www. brisbanecatholicschools.com.au or call (07) 3033 7000. New opening hours at Ipswich libraries are now in effect following a trial period held over eight weeks that found community need for increased operating hours to suit modern lifestyle demands. Deputy Mayor Councillor Victor Attwood said the new hours had been formulated after a Library Review Working Group collated community feedback since initial changes took place to the library hours on March 17. “From that community feedback it was recommended to increase opening hours at Ipswich’s libraries to meet the needs of the community,” Cr Attwood said. “Ipswich’s library hours were initially reviewed late last year and new hours recommended owing to low visitor numbers at certain times of the day.” Cr Attwood said after receiving community feedback from a number of channels since the implementation of the new hours, council had listened and had heard residents loud and clear. “After due consideration, new library opening hours have been endorsed by the Library Working Group and have commenced today.” The new library opening hours for Ipswich Central Library are: Monday, Tuesday and Friday – 9am-5pm Wednesday – 9am-6pm Thursday – 9am-7pm (previously 6pm) Saturday and Sunday – 9am-2pm (previously 12 noon)

Redbank Plains Library will be open: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am-5pm Tuesday – 11am-7pm (previously 6pm) Thursday – 1pm-5pm Saturday – 9am-12pm Redbank Plaza Library will be open: Monday, Wednesday and Friday – 10am - 5pm Tuesday – 1pm-5pm Thursday – 11am-7pm (previously 6pm) Saturday 9am-12pm

With the 2014-2015 financial year upon us, the team at G J Walsh & Co have been preparing themselves for change. While there are limited changes to tax compliance, G J Walsh & Co have now opened the doors at two new office locations — Orion Shopping Centre at Springfield and High Street in Boonah. For over 20 years, we have serviced our clients from our central Ipswich location — now we are diversifying the way we provide our advice and expanding into two growth areas. Our dedicated team remain committed to being informed of all legislative changes so that we can provide service and advice for the upcoming tax season.

There are some minor changes individuals should contemplate when preparing their 2014 income tax returns. The Medicare Levy rises to 2%, with adjustments to pay packets from 1 July 2014, and the superannuation guarantee increases from 9.25% to 9.5%. For small businesses, the previously available concessions for instant asset write-offs of $6,500 and $5,000 up-front for motor vehicles remain in limbo as the Government continues to push its repeal of the Carbon Tax. Get ready for ‘Redy’ app A new app developed by Bendigo Bank is set to change the way that people pay for things, and an Ipswich café has been selected as the very first in the state to use the program. ‘Redy’ is a free app which can be downloaded for Android and iOS devices, allowing you to put credit into an account and use that money for shopping. If you go to a café and order a coffee, the tablet displays a QR code which you then hold your phone up to, and the money comes straight out of your account. Best of all, each purchase gets you credit (these are called ‘creds’) which you can then choose to donate to community organisations of your choice, and the call is on now for those clubs or groups to register for what will be a win/win for users and the local community. Tower Central Café, next to the post office is poised to benefit from the application, with over 200 Bendigo Bank staff set to move into the office complex from August, all who will be set to use Redy as their preferred payment. It’s another step towards a cashless society, but with community groups set to benefit. Brad Muzzell from Redy said that the application was always designed to give back to the community. “It is a digital payment solution, but its so much more than that, as it supports local business and benefits the community. “With every transaction the customer gets creds. With these creds you can do one of two things. You can go to the gift screen and see a list of projects or charities, such as a local footy team who wants to paint their clubhouse. You can click on it and read more about it, and if you like what you see you can click to donate your creds to that project. There is no cost to the project charity to sign up,” Brad said. “The other option is to use those creds to convert those into dollars which you can spend locally, the app will tell you all the places you can use Redy, and there is a link there to hours, location and so on.“ Redy is already talking to councils and local

charities to spread the word about the app. “Café’s aren’t the only ones who have signed up, we have many other businesses such as Chemists and restaurants that have also joined, and with the launch only three weeks ago its just going to grow and grow. “This concept is about just creating a win/ win for shoppers, local businesses, and for the community.” Peter Groenenberg, Branch Manager of Bendigo Bank in the mall thinks that this is free kick for all local charities. “We approached the café and talked about them coming on board, as we thought it was going to be the best spot to get interest from all the Bendigo Bank staff. What better place to spread the word than with all our own staff, and they will be doing their bit every time they get a coffee at Tower Central Café.”

Public Guardian office opens As of the first of this month a new independent statutory body, the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is now responsible for protecting the rights of vulnerables adults with impaired decision making capacity and children in out of home care. Following public concern over the increasing number of children coming into care, in July 2012 the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry was established under the leadership of Tim Carmody QC. This became the ‘Carmody Inquiry’, and as a result it made 121 recommendations to improve the state’s child protection system. As a result, the OPG office has now opened in the Tower Central building, and Member for Ipswich Ian Berry did the honours. “This hub will revitalise child protection frontline services and provide much needed support to families so we can break the intergenerational cycle of abuse and neglect,” Mr Berry said. “Wherever possible we want to help children stay within the family unit, but when that is not possible we want to ensure that those who are in the child protection system are kept safe from harm, and that their voices are head.

“As well as protecting the rights and wellbeing of vulnerable people in the community, the Office of the Public Guardian has been given the additional role of providing individual advocacy to children and young people. These hubs are not just offices; they are places where vulnerable children and young people can go to be heard, raise grievances and concerns about their care, get legal advice and independent help and support.” Check out www.publicguardian.qld.gov.au Below: Member for Ipswich Ian Berry opens the office with Public Guardian Kevin Martin

NOW THAT’S

ENTERTAINMENT Talking Beer WITH ANTHONY AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

Quiet Deeds Quiet deeds is a relatively little known brand in craft beer which hails from Melbourne. With a normal range consisting of a Pale Ale, a Kolcsh, and an IPA the brewery had a great footing to release a special batch of their ‘Vanilla Porter’. The Alehouse has been featuring the Kolsch for a while now and has decided to bring on both the IPA and the Vanilla porter. The IPA has a prominent and delicious hop aroma that you would expect from any good drinking India Pale Ale. However this beer is balanced by citrus and fruitier flavours this 5.5%abv beer is an easy option for the colder months that are sure to be endured at the Alehouse. The ‘Kolsch’ features a crisper flavour compared to a regular lager coupled with a subtle fruity aroma, and at 4.4%abv is an easily sessionable beer. The Vanilla porter, the newest addition to the quiet deeds line is sure to excite our dark beer drinkers, with its dark chocolate appearance and a hint of vanilla undertones through an otherwise standard porter this beer is perfect to warm you up through winter. Especially with its 6.2% alcohol by volume content, this beer is best served by the pint and drank slowly to bring out the full on flavours that it has to offer.

GALORE Healthy Every Day

by Pete Evans In Healthy Every Day, Pete Evans shares his favourite recipes for good health and vitality. Inspired by a ‘paleo’ way of eating, these are the meals he cooks for his family every day, featuring loads of fresh veggies, nuts and seeds, sustainable seafood and meat, and free of gluten, sugar and dairy. Drawing on his love of the cuisines of Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam and Morocco, he shows you how to make lighter, healthier versions of your favourite breakfasts, salads, curries and burgers. And while you won’t find any sugar, there are some delicious gluten- and dairy-free treats, such as Young Coconut Ice Cream and Raspberry Mousse Cheesecakes. Healthy Every Day makes it easy to change the way you cook and eat, inspiring you to create delicious meals that will make you feel (and look!) fantastic. (Pan MacMillan)

Hercules (M)

by Clive Cussler and Graham Brown When Kurt Austin is injured while rescuing the passengers and crew of a sinking yacht, he wakes up with conflicting memories of what he saw. Did he witness an old friend and her children drown, or was the yacht abandoned when he came aboard? For reasons he cannot explain - yet - Kurt doesn’t trust either version of his recollection. Determined to seek out the truth, his hunt for answers soon descends him into a shadowy world of state-sponsored cybercrime, where he uncovers a pattern of suspicious accidents, vanishing scientists and a web of human trafficking. New loader speeds up C-17 cargo movements RAAF Amberley is the first air base to accept delivery of a new loading vehicle which is going to prove a boost for ground crews, making loading of aircraft more efficient. With the contract value in the vicinity of approx $20 million, the Canadian-made PFA-50 deck has pitch, roll, yaw and side-shift adjustments for quick and efficient interface with the aircraft, and employs a powered conveyor system to move cargo. The PFA-50 can transport its load at speeds up to 12 mph and lift from 960 mm, up to 5.8 meters, a maximum payload of just over 22,000 kilograms, in any combination of military pallets or rolling stock. It can service a large mix of aircraft, including C130, C17, C5, IL76, A400M, B-747, KC30, KC390, KC-135 and DC-10/MD11. FLTLT Cassie Payne from RAAF Amberley Headquarters Combat Support Group said that all up, around two hundred and fifty staff will be trained to use the loader over the next 12 months as the 36 loaders are rolled out across Australia,” FLTLT Payne said. “All Air Movements personnel will be licenced to use the PFA-50s,” FLTLT Payne stated.

The PFA-50 will replace the current ageing fleet of loaders and will be used for the bulk of aircraft loading. The loaders will be used at RAAF Bases across the country to load C17s, C130s, KC30s plus be trialed for their compatibility with the new C27s. “It’s certainly a great piece of equipment,” FLTLT Payne added. “Normally we’d use forklifts, but if there is an aircraft with three or more pallets on it, this will really increase efficiency and turnaround times of aircraft. “Having this new equipment, with a proper maintenance schedule, with parts readily available… means we can improve efficiency and reliability. The Australian Defence Force currently operates a mixed variant fleet of loaders. Each of these variants service specific aircraft whereas the PFA-50 is capable of loading the majority of aircraft that the Defence Force handles. “With a contract value of approx $20 million I think its money well spent.”

Firefighting display at RAAF Heritage Centre open to public It’s winter, and the hot item at the RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre Public Open Day on Sunday 20 July will be a display of the Air Force’s latest state-of-the-art aviation fire fighting equipment. The mighty Austrian-built Rosenbauer Panther Fire Engine is among the largest appliances in Australia. While its space-age looks are impressive its performance is even more so. Although it weighs in at a hefty 36 tonnes, its six-wheel drive can power it on and off roads to an aircraft accident site, and it can shoot foam at a burning aircraft from 100 metres away while racing to the scene. See the Panther, and meet the Air Force Fire Fighters, this Sunday at the Aviation Heritage Centre Open Day. Also on display are two swing wing F-111s, capable of flying at over twice the speed of sound; the Korean War vintage Sabre which blacked out part of the Gold Coast when it hit high tension lines – and survived; and the former Army Aviation Iroquois – or ”Huey” – helicopter A2-771 which started its life in the Air Force back in the Vietnam War days. Visitors to the RAAF Amberley Aviation

Heritage Centre will also have the opportunity to see a Vietnam-era Canberra bomber and Caribou battlefield transporter, World War 2 Boston bomber, “MASH-style” Sioux helicopter, plus memorabilia including a display commemorating the sinking of the Hospital Ship “Centaur”. They can take time out from the exhibits to enjoy brewed coffee, or tea, drinks and snacks available for purchase at the centre while listening to the excellent music of the RAAF Amberley Heritage Centre Brass and the RAAF Amberley Heritage Pipe Band. The Gift Shop has a wide variety of items to purchase as a reminder of your visit or as a gift for friends or family. Unfortunately, no EFTPOS or Credit Card facilities are available. The Aviation Heritage Centre is open this Sunday, and then on the third Sunday of each month, from 9am to 3pm. Simply turn off the Cunningham Highway to RAAF Amberley near Ipswich and follow the signs. Admission is free and photography is welcomed. MONEY & PROPERTY

MATTERS

Steps to cut your mortgage BY MARK BOURIS

A new financial year is often a time to take a closer look at money matters. It’s when we find ourselves digging through receipts, looking at old bills and trying to find places where we can save some money in the New Year. One place where people forget to look also happens to be their biggest household expense: their mortgage. And I believe the reason why people don’t look closer at their home loan is because the idea of refinancing seems too difficult, too confusing or is perceived as probably not worth it for the effort. If you’re one of those people, it’s time to ask yourself some questions. First, ask “What’s my rate?” In my experience, many people know what their monthly payments are, but they don’t actually know their interest rate. Do you? Take a look.If it starts with a 5, you can probably do better and I’d

advise shopping around. What does the market say? Use a comparison site and find out what’s on offer. The current market for variable rate mortgages runs from around 4.6 per cent to 6.1. Three-year fixed rate mortgages range from the middle fours to well over 6 per cent. There’s a lot of difference, which means there’s solid scope for savings. What must I have? Have a good repayment record with your current lender and ensure you are not currently in arrears. Also, know that if you’re halfway through a fixed-rate loan you may be charged a break fee to leave. Make sure it’s worth it. Call Mike on 0434968862 or send me a message on www.facebook.com/YBR.IPSWICH or https://twitter.com/YBRIpswich Mark Bouris Executive Chairman- Yellow Brick Road

Motoring News Bulletin with Llewellyn Motors Ipswich

Volvo XC90 wil be world’s cleanest Volvo Car’s All-New XC90 will offer an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation when it is launched later this year. The all-wheel-drive seven-seater offers drivers up to 400 horsepower but with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of around 60g/km. There has never been an SUV offering this level of power this cleanly. “There are no compromises when you drive an XC90,” said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. “In the past you could either have power or low CO2emissions. But with the AllNew XC90 you can have both.” The new XC90 offers a range of Drive-E engine options, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency. The main distinguishing feature of the Drive-E engine range is that they are all

four-cylinder engines. “With our new Drive-E powertrains, we have created a family of intelligent petrol and diesel engines with power curves that give exciting driveability at the same time as delivering world-beating fuel economy,” added Dr Mertens. “With seven people in the new XC90, carbon dioxide emissions per person and kilometre are outstandingly low.” The original XC90 was launched in 2002, and it revolutionised the SUV segment with its combination of space, versatility and safety. It went on to become a global sales phenomenon. The All-New XC90 will also be a transformational vehicle in its market segment. The company’s main car production plants are located in Gothenburg (Sweden), Ghent (Belgium) and Chengdu (China).

Holden sales beat Top 10 Holden sales continue to be up more than any other Top 10 brand in 2014. Holden Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, Phil Brook, said Holden continued to outperform, with strong sales performances across the portfolio. “On the back of some exceptional retail deals in June and the inherent strength of our product range and dealer network, Holden recorded an excellent result this month, capping a strong first half of the year,” Mr Brook said. “Commodore sales continue to be strong with well over 3000 sales this month and the outstanding Cruze Z-Series and SRi Z-Series are really starting to gain traction in the market, leading the Cruze range to 2,146 sales which is up nearly 60 per cent on May.”

“But what’s even more pleasing is that we saw bumper results right across our portfolio, with record sales of our Malibu sedan, Trax SUV and Colorado Truck range. Captiva 5 also recorded its best ever June result. “Despite the intense competition we are dedicated to building on Holden’s strong results in the first half of this year. The remainder of 2014 will be very challenging but we’ll keep offering our customers some of the best deals on the best vehicles in the market.”

All-New Camry RZ has arrived Toyota has drawn on the sporty appeal of its 86 coupé and Corolla hatch to dress up a new special-edition Camry, the Camry RZ. It has also packed the Camry RZ with a substantial list of added features, most of which are derived from the upmarket Camry Atara variants. The $31,990* special-edition model arrives as Camry marks 31 years on the Australian market where it is “coming of age” in its 21st consecutive year as Australia’s best-selling mid-size car. Styling updates for Camry RZ that create an emotional link to the 86 GTS and Corolla ZR hatch start with Inferno Orange premium paint, which has never previously been offered on Camry. It joins five other colours available for the Camry RZ. The revised frontal treatment reinforces the sporty Toyota family connection with the addition of front foglamps with black surrounds, sports headlamps with dark inserts, and a stylish grille that combines body colour and gloss black elements. Camry RZ features that were previously available only on the premium Atara SX include sports suspension, sports body kit incorporating side skirts and rear bumper, and a boot lip spoiler in gloss black. Camry’s newest special-edition model also gains the dual exhaust system previously exclusive to Atara grades. For more information on this and all things Toyota call Llewellyn motors on 3282 2922.
