Loving Ipswich Life! The response we’ve been getting to the new-look Ipswich LIfe has been huge. Everyone seems to love the new layout, the content and especially the giveaways! In this issue we have no less than thirty double passes to the movies, along with my chat with Brent Owens ... the day after winning the Masterchef title for 2014. It was the highest rating season for years, and has invigorated a nation’s love affair with food. Also in this issue we caught up with fashion designer Sacha Drake who is just one of many designers to feature in this years Ipswich Fashion Festival. The V8s were once again a big hit in Ipswich recently and we were there to capture fans at a meet and greet event. Year 7 will be starting at high school from next year, and in this issue we have an Education feature to help you choose a school for your children if you are still undecided about where to go. Its a major decision and one that you need to consider well. Plus we have a feature on Ipswich Grammar which is having an open day for prospective familes. Don’t forget to like us on Facebook for instant giveaways and much more! darren@strikepublications.com.au

Ipswich Life is published fortnightly, reaching in excess of 40,000 households across the Ipswich region - and online through our website ipswichlife.com.au. Our focus is on promoting Ipswich, it’s lifestyle, its events, local stories of interest, and the Defence Forces on RAAF Base Amberley. IpswichLife is the only full colour lifestyle magazine wholly produced in Ipswich. We welcome story leads and feedback.

Come and hear Veronica share about her healing, in Ipswich and in Lowood Keys to healing Faith, hope and love are all keys to healing, but knowing how much God loves you is by far the most important. A promise only means something if you know you can trust the character of the one who said it. In the bible Jesus speaks of having the faith of a child. However childlike faith only occurs for a child that knows their Daddy’s love. The bible tells us to become “grounded” in God’s love. When we are grounded in His love the eyes of our heart are opened to a greater understanding of what God is saying to us, as everything becomes ‘coloured’ by that love. Veronica says, “When I first asked God to reveal to me the ‘mystery’ of healing His response was quite simple, ‘Walk in the knowledge that I love you.’ At first I laughed — it couldn’t possibly be that simple! But in the months and years that followed I discovered His love was what held me when circumstances screamed at me, “You’re never going to get healed!” The bible also says “perfect love casts out fear”. When you have been sick for a long time fear is ever present. It is only the perfect love of a perfect Father that can lay waste to that fear. Faith is an important aspect of healing, but faith alone will never sustain you. If your miracle doesn’t come and come quickly faith will wane. However faith — empowered by God’s love for you — will enable you to go the distance. Rooted and grounded in the love of God you will be empowered to walk into the fullness of God’s love. Veronica shares practical steps as to how to do this while teaching into the healing experience. www.GodsHealingTruth.org

WHAT’S HOT IN

FASHION

Entries open for Ipswich Fashion Festival Applications are now open for young fashion designers across the Ipswich region to get their entries locked in for the second Ipswich Fashion Festival in October. Last year’s inaugural Fashion Festival event was a big hit, and 2014 is set to be even bigger. Tickets are now on sale for the Gala Fashion Evening on October 25, with applications for the Student Design Awards now online. The Fashion Festival will also include the ‘Fashions in the Limelight’ event at Riverlink on October 30, plus the ‘Kitsch In The Switch’ Vintage Vixens and Retro Rockabilly Fashion Fiesta at Ipswich City Square on Saturday November 1, which last year drew huge crowds. Sacha Drake is one of the nation’s leading fashion houses, and will be involved in this year’s event. Sacha’s designs are worn by a host of celebrities across the nation including Sonia Kruger, Samantha Armytage and Georgie Gardner. Sacha told Ipswich Life that the secret to making it in the Fashion Industry comes down to several factors, but most importantly it is all about being yourself. “To stand out, you have to have your own signature” Sacha said from her Brisbane office. “I have been designing since I was a teenager. I decided to enter the fashion industry when I was about thirty, to come back to my creative roots. At the time, I started designing plain

cotton coloured dresses and then moved onto jersey prints which were really well received. The market really dictates what you will sell. “I put in the hard work in the beginning and I think that still applies now. I door knocked around boutiques, offering to make them on consignment. I said ‘I’ll give you stock and after two weeks either keep it or return it’. I had to put myself on the line and take that risk,” she said. “Timing is everything in this industry and looking back I realise that at the time the economy was on the up and there was a shortage of beautiful jersey print frocks. Those factors helped me along.” Sacha Drake is today, one of the best known names when it comes to fashion, and it’s no surprise that there is a long list of celebrities wearing the label. “We dress a lot of high profile women in the media. They are smart, successful and at the top of their game. They need to look professional, attractive and their wardrobe needs to reflect their position of authority.” Sacha said she loves to see her designs on these women but equally enjoys dressing all women and enabling them to embrace the body they are in. Sacha has become an expert in dressing women of

all shapes and sizes. “What I look for when dressing someone is to first look at their body shape. I see them as a mathematical equation that I have to solve. No matter what your shape there are ways to maximise what you love and minimise what you want to conceal!” Sacha is looking forward to her involvement in this year’s Ipswich Fashion Festival, and has one simple piece of advice to those getting their designs ready. “The best advice I could give to young designers would be to make it wearable, but make it ‘wow’. “I had a young designer from Ipswich work for me a couple of years ago. She was fabulous, an amazing person, and now works for a friend of mine as a Production Manager, so there’s an Ipswich success story for you!”

CELEBRITY NEWS

STAR CHAT Masterchef: the day after Brent Owens from Victoria survived on just two hours sleep after the Grand Final of Masterchef. Brent won $250,000 in prize money, a book deal and a brand new Alfa Romeo, and needless to say he was still on ‘cloud nine’. About 1.7 million Australians watched the final. This year’s Masterchef had the best ratings for a long time, ensuring the show will be back in 2015, and incredible as it may sound Brent only got his application in with 30 minutes to spare, and only after making a bet with his girlfriend. “I did have a bet with my girlfriend, that is a true story, and that’s what pushed me to do it,” Brent said. “You watch these shows and you say ‘I’m gonna do it’ but you never do. I was one of those people “My family believed in me and my girlfriend pushed me to apply. Applications closed online at 11am and I sent mine in at 10.30am. We agreed that if I went on Masterchef she has to go on Australia’s Next Top Model!” Brett’s job as bobcat driver couldn’t be further removed from being a chef, but in a twist of fate Brent pulled it off. “No, I’m not sick of talking about it, I’m enjoying it while it lasts. The finale was filmed a few weeks ago, and we didn’t actually know the final result until it went to air. I was with my family, I went to my sister’s house and surprised

them. It was a really good moment to see all their faces and their reactions. “You can’t explain the difference in careers. It’s proof that when you find something you love and work hard you can be successful. I was a home cook, like everyone else. I went into this, and I learned things beyond my years.” So what did Brent think when he first saw the final challenge, recreating the Chocolate Ethereal? “Honestly, the words that came to mind… I really can’t say in print. It was stressful dish, but at the same time I kept telling myself that they wouldn’t give us a dish we couldn’t do, it wouldn’t be unachievable. “I knew if I followed the recipe and stayed focused, and kept methodical I just knew I could do it. It tasted incredible. I’m a chocolate fanatic and it was the best thing for me. There were lots of things on the show that tasted amazing, and that was up there with the best. “ Brent survived more eliminations than any contestant in the show’s history, and Brent puts

it down to a cool head at the right time. “I think surviving the eliminations came down to the ability to cope with the stress, because that’s what sent people home. When they lost it in the head it showed on the plate, and I think I handled that pressure better than some others. It is intimidating having judges breathing down your neck and cameras everywhere, but you can’t worry about what you can’t control. In those situations I just put my head down and got on with it. “The whole experience is very stressful. I’m sure every person who enters a competition would have stress and anxiety, but I tried to treat it as a positive experience, and I’m sure all the other contestants would agree that I was

the most relaxed person there.” So with $250,000 in his pocket, Brent plans to spend it wisely, plus he still has a dream of one day doing his own food/travel TV show. “The travel show is something that I’ll do if I can, but right now I need to focus on making a career out of this. “Hopefully I can get my own café up and running with pre-prepared café foods ready to go, and its something that ideally I’d like to expand around the nation. I plan to use the money to boost my career, definitely not to go and party. I think people got the impression I hated my life, but that wasn’t the case. I appreciated all the opportunities I’ve had and now I have a chance to live the dream!”

Disability Action Week activities announced A free forum and a series of art workshops will be held in Ipswich to mark Disability Action Week which takes place next month. Ipswich City Council Youth and Seniors Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland said council was already busily making plans to celebrate the annual week which will run this year from September 14 to 20. “Approximately 20% of Queenslanders have some kind of disability,” Cr Ireland said. “Disability Action Week activities encourage the community to focus on a person’s achievements and abilities. “The events held highlight that diversity and difference enrich communities and that people with a disability have much to contribute to their local community.” Cr Ireland said council was proud to support the week which was designed to encourage positive attitudes towards people with a disability. “We encourage community groups and disability service providers throughout the city to commemorate this important week. We want to improve access and make our community a better place for everyone.” Cr Ireland said the two events to be held were ArtISability Unmasked and a special information forum. “The Community Development Branch are partnering with ArtISability, which is a professional development program run locally for artists with disabilities. “ArtISability Unmasked will provide the opportunity for artists to attend four free workshops which will be facilitated by skilled artists. “

In addition to these workshops, an art exhibition and art competition will complement this project. Each workshop will run from 10 am to 12 pm at Arttime Supplies, 203 Brisbane Street, Ipswich. Cr Ireland said an exhibition would be held at the same venue following the workshops from September 22 to 27. She said as part of Disability Action Week, council’s Community Development Branch was also partnering with Disability Community Awareness to host an information forum for local service providers, parents, carers and community members with disabilities. Cr Ireland said local performers with a disability had been invited to showcase their talents, guest speakers would present on relevant topics and a light lunch would be held at the conclusion of the event. The Information Forum will be held from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm on September 10 at the North Ipswich Reserve Corporate Centre. Forum attendance is free and will replace the regular monthly Ipswich Disability Interagency Network Meeting for September.

IGS will also host a scholarship exam for students entering Year 7 or 8 in 2015. The exam will be conducted at the conclusion of Open Day, and boys must be registered by Wednesday 20 August. Senior School

The Igor Lapa Junior School is a SunSmart accredited air-conditioned facility offering a safe and stimulating learning environment. Students thrive in rich learning opportunities with an emphasis on literacy and numeracy. These fundamentals are enhanced through a varied program that includes art, science, physical education, music, health, drama, English, technology, history and geography. Music, drama and visual art help boys develop a wide range of skills while enjoying the challenges of new experiences. Boys love movement and physical activities, and with a covered Sports Dome and adventure playground, gym, ovals and heated swimming pool, students develop selfconfidence, teamwork, leadership, acceptance of physical challenges and an awareness of self.

The Senior School curriculum gives students the opportunity to map their own career paths through a supportive, collaborative process. Academic excellence is fundamental to the IGS values, with most graduates going on to study at university. Students in years 10 to 12 have the option of studying specialist subjects across a wide range of areas and can also select from vocational education and training courses. Students are encouraged to participate in

extra-curricular activities under a ‘healthy mind in a healthy body’ philosophy. They also enjoy leadership opportunities that can be carried forward to adulthood. The Ipswich Grammar School Open Day will be held on Thursday 28 August from 9am to 12pm. For more information on the 2015 scholarship exam, visit www.ipswichgrammar. com or phone (07) 3813 9600.

Middle School The middle years at Ipswich Grammar School provide opportunities for boys to learn and grow in ways that are responsive to their needs. Award-winning Middle School programs ensure the educational, emotional and physical transition for students in years 7 to 9 is as smooth as possible. The curriculum is intellectually challenging and empowers young men to learn. Literacy is fostered through cross-curricular initiatives, structured reading strategies, writing programs, competitions and workshops.

WITH SHAYNE NEUMANN, MP

I was pleased this month to attend the Garma Festival, the largest and most vibrant annual celebration of Yolngu culture. Yolngu are the Aboriginal people of north east Arnhem Land and each August the Yidaki (Didjeridu) call heralds the beginning of Garma. Garma is described as “Australia’s most significant Indigenous event, and a model for self-determination, reconciliation, Indigenous knowledge sharing, transfer and exchange. Garma is a colourful event with a greater, deeper purpose. Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians experience and are directly involved in a spectacular yet substantive display of cultural practice and cross-cultural learning.” I can certainly attest to that description, having spent the first few days of August sharing in the celebrations. We were treated to a feast of dance, visual art, ancient storytelling and music. Throughout the three day festival we had the opportunity to attend important forums and education and training programs related to youth leadership, craft, tourism and governance. Year 7 is moving to high school! Moving Year 7 to high school follows other major changes, such as the introduction of a Prep year in 2007 and raising the school starting age by 6 months in 2008. By 2015 Year 7 students will be

in their eighth year of schooling and almost half of them will turn 13, which is the right age to begin high school. This change will also bring Queensland schools into line with the rest of the

country, except for schools in South Australia. In 2013, state high schools began the implementation of Junior Secondary for students in Years 8 and 9. Junior Secondary will also include Year 7 from 2015. Junior Secondary recognises that young teens have different learning and social needs and it aims to provide the supportive environment these students need as they transition to high school. Twenty state schools are currently piloting Year 7 in a secondary setting. Murrumba State Secondary College was the first state high school to welcome Year 7 students when it opened its doors in January 2012.

Nineteen more schools have joined the pilot program since 2013. Pilot schools will share their firsthand knowledge and experience with other schools as they prepare for the statewide move of Year 7 in 2015. All schools in Queensland should now well prepared for the changes that come into effect in January, and schools in the Ipswich region are no exception. Over the next few pages in IpswichLife parents and prospective high school students can find a selection of schools that are set to take children and set them on their way through life with education and learning.

Outstanding teachers were recognised at Brisbane Catholic Education’s inaugural ‘Excellence in Teaching Awards’. More than thirty finalists from almost two hundred nominations for the new awards that recognise excellence in learning and teaching, gathered to witness Archbishop Mark Coleridge and BCE Executive Director Pam Betts congratulate the winners. Liam Beatty from St Augustine’s College, Augustine Heights, was presented with the Excellence as a Beginning Teacher award while Paul Mackay from St Peter Claver College, Riverview, received the Excellence in Leadership for Learning and Teaching Award. Ms Betts said it was important in life to acknowledge those who shine in their endeavours. “Too often in our society we focus on the negative rather than the positive and

there is so much positive in our teachers to celebrate,” she said. Ms Betts said teaching was a wonderful career choice. “Teachers have a pivotal role in creating the right conditions and opportunities to encourage learning. “They also help build the future by providing opportunities for positive outcomes in the lives of young people today,” she said. She thanked sponsors TUH (Teachers Union Health), QTMB (Queensland Teachers Mutual Bank) and ACU (Australian Catholic University) for their support. The awards will now become an annual event. For more information about a Catholic school near you or an enrolment pack visit www.brisbanecatholicschools.com.au or call (07) 3033 7000. The Springfield Anglican College The Springfield Anglican College is the oldest school in Greater Springfield yet is relatively young in comparison with the majority of independent schools across Queensland. At sixteen years old, it is wonderful to see the growing maturity of the College across all aspects of its holistic approach to education. Importantly, this leads to a broader range and diversity of opportunities for students who attend the College. In addition to a wide range of sporting and Creative Arts activities on offer each year, College students now have opportunity to participate in a growing list of other extracurricular activities. Each week a number of clubs operate across the campuses including Science, Design and Technology, Chess, running and mountain biking, as well as an Air Cadets Unit operating out of the Secondary Campus. In addition, each year for the past five

years, a group has skied at Perisher Valley and in September, the College’s first overseas sporting trip will take place, with Years Nine and Ten teams heading to New Zealand to play Netball, Basketball and Soccer. Further, in April next year, a large group of students and parents will travel to France and Gallipoli to commemorate ANZAC Day. The College also places great emphasis on students reaching out to those in need. As examples so far this year, students have raised money to support Queensland farmers via the ‘Buy a Bale’ programme, supported students at the Goodna Special School, helped out at the St Vincent de Paul Distribution Centre and, in the month of September, will once again actively support ‘Ipswich Cares’. Collectively these opportunities provide very well for the differing interests of students and, in doing so, offer a suite of learning experiences that facilitate personal growth and development.

Ipswich Junior Grammar School extends co-education to Year 6 According to School Principal, Dr Peter Britton, the Junior School will remain focussed on nurturing the development of confident, well-educated students by providing a quality all-round education program, with an emphasis on academic achievement. “Teaching staff will continue to participate in the School’s professional learning program designed in collaboration with Dr Ben Jensen from the Grattan Institute to ensure that all students receive excellent instruction in every class, every day,” Dr Britton said. “There are also plans to expand the School’s popular music program and introduce a special extension and challenge program for all Junior Grammar students,” he said. The School has provided a successful Prep to Year 4 co-educational program for the past 16 years, with students consistently achieving in the top NAPLAN results for the region. The School will open its doors on a normal school day from 9.00am to 11.00am on Friday 22 August to provide an opportunity for interested families to visit the EEC and Prep to Year 6 classrooms, as well as Ipswich Girls’ Grammar’s Middle and Senior Schools.

Discover WestMAC at the Open for Business Day West Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC) will be opening its doors to prospective parents and students at an Open for Business Day on Friday 22 August. WestMAC Principal Geoff McLay said the Open for Business Days had proven very popular with families in previous years as the events provide a unique opportunity to see a normal school day at the College. “The Open for Business Day is best described as a mini Open Day,” Mr McLay said. “The event provides a glimpse of a typical day at the College in a shortened format from 9 am to 10.30 am,” he said. “Our students and teaching staff will be working in their usual classes during the event so parents can see firsthand the day-to-day life at WestMAC, just as their child would experience it as a student.” The event commences at 9 am with a brief welcome and information session by Principal

Geoff McLay. Staff members will then conduct personalised tours of the College to see the classrooms in action and various facilities. The event is open to families considering enrolment in 2015 and beyond, however only limited places remain for the 2015 school year. What was it about the Isuzu Queensland Golf Open last year that attracted so many spectators? Organisers say the crowd of thousands was packed with as many nongolfers as golfers and there were entire families that chose to visit Brookwater Golf and Country Club every day over the four day championship. Brookwater, which hosted the premier event for the first time, is again this year’s venue. For nine year’s it’s been Queensland’s official number one public access course, and according to the judges an annual stand-out from anything else in the state. Course Superintendent Ben Geeson whose job it is to keep Brookwater on top of the ladder, believes when Greg Norman designed it he built in something enchanting. “Anyone visiting here is immediately struck by the beauty on offer,” he said. “The fairways are crafted to be totally in sync with the magnificent native

Australian bushland setting. You just want to spend time here, golf or not. People come here just to get married. It’s that kind of place.” According to Ben, watching the spectacle of the Isuzu Queensland Open being played in the splendour of Brookwater is a great day out. Spectators are invited to attend this Year’s tournament free-of-charge. WHAT’SON

Talking Beer WITH TIM AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

Pale Ale When you think of Pale Ale what comes to mind? Fruity? Bitter? Sweet? Crisp? Flavoursome? They’re all correct, Pale Ale is the most common type of craft beer on the market but it is also the most diverse. Ale House 24 at the Yamanto Tavern has a great cross-section of the Pale Ale market on offer. First up is Kosciuszko Pale Ale, this ale is light and mildly fruity with a clean crisp finish, a great ale for those just starting their craft beer journey. Next on the list is Scenic Rim Digga’s Pale Ale, sourced from here in Queensland, this Pale Ale sits more on the crisp side of the spectrum with a bolder but not overpowering bitterness with very subtle hop notes. Matilda Bay Itchy Green Pants, or IGP for short, is next. IGP joins Kosciuszko Pale Ale as a great Pale Ale for craft novices, IGP is a cloudy Australian ale with subtle hop notes, balanced bitterness and a very clean finish. Next off the rank is a limited release from our friends at 4 Pines, it is 4 Pines Keller Door Vic Secret Pale Ale. This Pale Ale is made using a new hop variety called Vic Secret which was created in Victoria. This hop has a unique quality in its Pine aroma while adding an earthy character to the beer. Last but certainly not least is Matilda Bay’s Alpha Pale Ale, the biggest and most powerful of the Pale Ales on offer. Right from the get go you are blown away by the massive aroma of pineapple with hints of passion fruit and pine needles. Once you taste it this beer’s power is re enforced with a lovely mouth coating hop flavour, a creamy malt feel and a long but refreshing bitter finish. Alpha is definitely a great food beer which would compliment a spicy curry or cajun chicken (both of which conveniently appear on the Ale House 24 menu). If there is one message you should take from this, it is that Pale Ale is a beer of many faces, so don’t limit yourself to one as you are certainly missing out and just because you didn’t like one particular Pale Ale doesn’t mean you don’t like all Pale Ales. Diversity is the spice of life… so live a little. Production has begun on a sequel to Tim Burton’s 2010 Oscar winning film Alice in Wonderland. Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Mia Wasikowska will all reprise their roles in Alice in Wonderland: Through The Looking Glass. Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has also been added to the cast of the sequel.

DEFENCE Australian Defence Force personnel have been engaged in operations and training activities. Here are some of the people and platforms involved. Rollout of the the first two Australian F-35A ‘Lightning II’ aircraft at the Lockheed Martin plant in Fort Worth resembled a Hollywoodstyle event, with rock music and didgeridoo sound – even the delivery of a message stick to the RAAF by an aboriginal man. The F-35A, the air defence variant of the Joint Strike Fighter family of fighter jets, is destined to become Australia’s fighter of the future — and one of the few 5th Generation stealthy fighters available worldwide. While the F-35 is regarded as a highly capable fighter it does not have the range or the firepower of the F-22A ‘Raptor’, which has been undefeated in war scenario exercises such as ‘Red Flag’ - but there is no export variant of the fighter The F-35 will be dependent on air refuelling from RAAF KC-30A tanker aircraft, which is part of the modus operandi for Australia’s future air combat capability. Completing the operational support package is the Airborne Early Warning & Control E-7A ‘Wedgetail’ aircraft and the EA18G ‘Growler’ Electronic Warfare fighters. Selection of the F-35 has been controversial, mainly due to cost considerations, production delays, and concern over the aircraft’s performance against Eastern Bloc fighters. But the Air Force remains confident that the F-35’s capabilitly will evolve, as was the case with the F-111 – also controversial in its day. Stealth — low observability to radar — along

with state-of-the-art integrated weapon and avionic systems are seen as strengths of this new type of fighter. Advances in radar technology, with the capability to detect stealthy aircraft, has been a concern but the RAAF is confident that the F-35 can stay ahead of radar technology developments. Both the F-22A and the F-35A are built by Lockheed Martin so there are obvious synergies in each type’s separate but complementary development. Also obvious is the belief by Defence and Government that the F-35 has what it takes to protect Australia’s interest in the coming decades. It’s vital that this is the case, because the $12 billion dollar program for 72 aircraft is a hugely expensive Defence purchase, one that the Chief of Air Force regards as necessary. Air Marshal Geoff Brown syas that the aircraft represents the “greatest evolutionary change” in Australian military aviation history. The first Australian F-35s, designated AU-1 and AU-2, will now undergo aircraft airworthiness and acceptance testing before transferring to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, to be inducted into the 61st Fighter Squadron where US and Australian F-35 pilots will train side-by-side. Initial RAAF pilot training will begin in the United States in early 2015. From 2018, the RAAF will conduct ferry flights of JSF aircraft to Australia.

A local law firm has come up with a great idea for people to get a legal will prepared while supporting a fantastic cause. Bushnell & Power Lawyers will host a ‘Charity Wills Day’ in support of Operation PTSD Support Inc. Thinking about making a Will or updating an existing Will? The this is a great opportunity to come along on Friday 29 August 2014 and have Bushnell & Power do the work for $50, to be donated to Operation PTSD Support Inc. Unfortunately, we all know that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a problem that not only affects the sufferer but friends and family as well. Noises we take for granted such as balloons popping, dogs barking, cars backfiring or children screaming can often trigger PTSD. But it is the families and

friends that bear the brunt, often resulting in relationship conflicts, marriage break-down, psychological harm in children and in some cases Suicide. Caring for a partner with PTSD can cause stress and depression for the carer. Operation PTSD Support Inc. provides much needed support to sufferers of PTSD and their family and friends and to promote awareness of the impact of PTSD can have on families of our returning servicemen and women. Having a will prepared can be a costly experience so come along and take advantage of this offer and show your support for such an important Charity. RAAF Caribous deployed to Vietnam 50 years ago

DEFENCE Security forces train under battlefield rules In the 12 months since the establishment of the new combined Security Forces (SECFOR) capability, great strides have been made in refining capability. The SECFOR capability has been successfully employed operationally in the Middle East and in a domestic capacity. Last month, new collective SECFOR capability requirements were evaluated during ‘Exercise Hellfire’ held at the Wide Bay Training Area, intended to give the recently formed members of Number 2 Security Forces Squadron experience in live firing, including the use of battle effects, as well as qualification in high effect explosives. The scenarios ranged from simulated probing harassment to full scale attacks with rocket propelled grenades and small arms, designed to test the responses of base security forces and those of Quick Reaction Forces who deploy in Protected Mobility Vehicles to counter the attack and secure the battlefield. 2SECFORSQN Operations Officer FLTLT Charlie Kearnan commended the effort of both ground and airfield security forces airmen. “Essentially, we are ‘upping the ante’ by throwing in a notional enemy force and scenarios that can replicate what the guys may encounter in the region. “The highlight of the exercise was the integration of the SECFOR workforce. The diverse skills that the airman bring to this culminating scenario is excellent. “It’s been a busy 12 months since the

squadron formed. We’ve had a few transitional issues to work through, but we’re operating as a fully integrated force now. Emerging aircraft types, changing threat sources, establishment of super bases and unconventional expeditionary tasks dictate that security is more important now than ever. XO 2SECFORSQN, SQNLDR Mark Sartori said this was the first time the squadron had participated in the exercise for some time. “Until recently, the Squadron has been heavily committed with operational deployments. This included SECFOR 1 and SECFOR 2 based in Tarin Kot, Flightline Security on Kandahar Airfield and other specialist roles like Close Personal Protection. “2SECFORSQN has also been heavily involved in bridging training to support the new SECFOR capability requirements.” With this in mind, one scenario was based on 2SECFORSQN providing a security effect in support of an Evacuation Handling Centre where the threat to the airfield has escalated. Air Force Security elements including Military Working Dog, Explosive Detection Dog and Airfield Defence Guard’s were employed to provide the security effect for the EHC. Above: 2SECFORSQN’s Quick Reaction Force clear the battlefield after a contact during Ex Hellfire at Wide Bay. On August 8, the RAAF marked 50 years since the first deployment of Air Force assets to South Vietnam, when three Caribou aircraft of the RAAF Transport Flight Vietnam landed at Vung Tau air base, followed later by another three Caribous. Air crews flew supply operations, known as ‘milk runs, one to the north and one to the south, on alternate days six days a week. The aircraft airlifted supplies at US Special Forces camps and to the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam across the Central Highlands. Renamed No 35 (Transport) Squadron in June 1966, the squadron is remembered fondly as ‘Wallaby Airlines’. While the ‘milk runs’ by implication were relatively safe flights, 35 Squadron routinely carried out wide-ranging unscheduled daily tasks, allocated at short notice. Benign as the transport operations seemed they involved dangers. Airfields at Special Forces outposts, where the Caribous often landed, were usually outside the camp’s perimeter. Attacks on the aircraft in the dangerous moments of take-off and landing were always possible. Airfield conditions were also hazardous. For Caribou pilots there was little margin for error, as some airstrips were just a few metres longer than the minimum needed for a Caribou to take off. Others eroded

under the flooding monsoon rains and more than one Caribou crashed on these remote landing strips. After 1966 the squadron’s workload increased further when Luscombe Field opened at Nui Dat. Now the Australian Task Force base was part of the Caribous’ regular run, and work with the 1st Australian Task Force became a regular feature of squadron operations. The Caribous returned to Australia in early 1972. They remained the mainstay of Australian Defence Force tactical transport operations — operating from RAAF Base Richmond in New South Wales, RAAF Base Amberley and finally RAAF Base Townsville — before being withdrawn from service in December 2009.
