You should be dancing.... With only one surviving member of the Bee Gees left in Barry Gibb, it’s nice to know that the great Australian tradition of tribute bands is still continuing, and for the members of The Australian Bee Gees Show, they never imagined it would take them to 44 countries and result in a two year full time gig in Las Vegas. For Michael Clift, who plays Barry Gibb, playing a long stint in Vegas has proven to be the most normal job he’s ever had. “Doing so many shows in Vegas, ironically is the most normal life we’ve had compared to travelling on the road. I’ve spent half my kids lives on the road, but now I go off to work, drop off the kids, and get more time at home, and we’ve been based at the one hotel for two and a half years now. We’d been on the road for fifteen years before we got the gig in Vegas,” Michael told Ipswich Life. Michael and his band will be performing in Ipswich on Sunday June 30, and Michael knows the influence the band had on Australian culture, along with the fact that as Australians, we do tribute bands the best. ‘’I remember as a kid growing up in Canberra and listening to them on the radio, and around that time the Beatles and the Seekers were popular too, but they had such a unique sound. When I was in my teens they were at their peak during the 1970’s. I remember my cousins played the soundtrack to me because kids couldn’t go see ‘Saturday Night Fever’ at

the movies due to the rating. “The show came about because we were all doing our own stuff and looking to do something on the side to support what we all really wanted to do. We thought what was a good idea to do a show? Everyone was doing Beatles, Abba and Elvis but nobody was doing the Bee Gees. So we started researching and when you start to write down all the songs, you realise how many hits they had and it started to come together in a show. “I guess as Aussies we are able to adapt to accents, there’s something in the way we grow up that makes it easy for us to imitate English and American accents. I think we do tribute bands so good in this country because Australian audiences are quite tough and you have to do a good job or you get laughed off the stage, but in America they are a bit more sympathetic, so I think that’s what whips tribute bands into shape. “Its tricky to cover everything, for a few years now we’ve done the ‘One Night Only’ show, but basically what we’re doing now is more of a retrospective. We cover the sixties

and the seventies in chronological order, and then after the intermission do the ‘One Night Only’ concert. Otherwise it’s too hard to get everything into one show.” There’s no prizes for working out what the most requested song is at their shows, something Michael knows all too well. “I guess ‘Staying Alive’ and ‘You Should Be Dancing’ are the two songs people are waiting for at the shows. It’s definitely the nostalgia factor that people love, we do meet and greets after the shows in Vegas and its a lot stronger than we ever imagined to be honest. “So far we’ve been to 44 countries over the last 17 years. I probably won’t appreciate it until it’s all over, as its pretty mind boggling. At the early part of our career it felt like someone else was doing it, but we record a lot of what we do on video so we have a record of our travels.” The Australian Bee Gees Show is on Sunday June 30 at Ipswich Civic Centre. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale recently reminded residents it’s not too late to make some noise about funding upgrades as the ‘Give A Beep’ campaign made its final stop in Ipswich. Councillor Pisasale launched Australia’s largest mobile billboard sporting the ‘Give A Beep’ opposite the Ipswich Turf Club. Councillor Pisasale said the monthlong campaign asks residents to support transport upgrade projects in their local community by registering their ‘beep’ at www.giveabeep.com.au. “We have had strong support from South East Queenslanders over the past few weeks and I would encourage residents who haven’t done so to visit the website and register their ‘beep’,” Cr Pisasale said. In Ipswich, SEQ Mayors are lobbying for the Cunningham Highway upgrade between Yamanto and Amberley, the Norman Street Bridge and the Darra to Springfield rail extension. Cr Pisasale said the ‘Give A Beep’ campaign was focused on making SEQ’s transport links safe and efficient to boost local business productivity and ultimately create more jobs in local communities.

“Everyone from families to truckies to tradies will benefit from faster and safer transport links and every project we can get funding for will make a difference to SEQ,” he said. “The upgrade of the Cunningham Highway between Yamanto and Amberley will increase capacity from two lanes to four lanes reducing congestion and improving safety, and the Norman Street Bridge will provide a much-needed second crossing of the Bremer River, which will assist in the revitalisation of our city centre.” “SEQ Mayors will be stepping up their lobbying efforts from now until the Federal election in September,” he said. “This month, we will be travelling to Canberra to meet with the major parties and the more beeps we have the stronger our argument for funding will be. “The Commonwealth needs to be reminded the people pushing for these projects are members of the voting public who will not put up with all talk and no action from the major parties.” For the full list of the Council of Mayors (SEQ) infrastructure priority projects and to register visit www.giveabeep.com.au.

Education boon for local schools Ipswich is home to some of the best schools in Queensland. We boast a range of quality state, Catholic and independent schools across the region. Partnerships with the Federal Government have enabled a number of schools to improve educational outcomes for their students. Also, I have been proud to open so many halls, libraries and other new facilities in the region, which have assisted in revitalising our local schools. I am excited about the potential for even greater investment in our local schools, through the National Plan for School Improvement. This funding will deliver an unprecedented injection of funds into schools for more one-on-one attention, more modem equipment for students, and more training and support for our teachers. Our local schools are among the state’s biggest winners as far as funding goes. If Queensland signs up to the plan, Bremer State High School would receive almost $14 million in additional funding over the next six years, with Ipswich High School set to receive an additional $10.5 million and Redbank Plains State School would receive an extra $5 million. Principals, teachers and parents have told me how vital this would be and how much could be achieved with the additional resources. I will continue to fight for these additional funds for our schools. Over the next few weeks I will be out and about through the electorate doing mobile offices. I look forward to meeting many more residents. Please do not hesitate to contact my office on 3201 5300 if I can assist you in any way or you can find information on my website: www. Environplan photographers wanted Nature and its beauty will again be the focus of entries in 2013 Ipswich Enviroplan Photographic Competition. This annual competition offers a total prize pool of more than $5000 and was officially launched today to coincide with the reopening of the new-look Queens Park Environmental Education Centre. Environment and Conservation Committee Chairperson Councillor Heather Morrow said the search was on again for images which best capture Ipswich’s rich natural heritage with plenty of categories open to anyone with a camera and a love for the great outdoors. “Photographers of all ages and skill levels are invited to take part in this challenging photographic experience,” Cr Morrow said. This year photographers may enter the following categories: • Native birds of Ipswich • Native plants of Ipswich

• Insects and Arachnids of Ipswich • Landscapes of Ipswich • People in the Natural Environment A new category of Bremer River is supported by both the Australian and Queensland Governments through community development and recovery package under Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. Photos can be specific portraits of flora/fauna or can be landscapes but must have the Bremer River as the primary subject. Cr Morrow said, “Primary students will have a general category to encourage younger students to consider the natural environment in Ipswich.” Entry forms are available from Ipswich City Council Customer Service Centres, Divisional Offices, and Library branches. Entries close Friday 4 October 2013. Caption: One of the winners from last year, Narelle Power’s photo titled ‘Morning Mist’

Lisa’s love affair with Queensland Multiple Logie winner Lisa McCune talks about her new show, life on stage, and juggling it all as a busy mum of three. Somewhere in Lisa McCune’s house there must be a very long shelf just to hold all the awards she’s won. As the winner of no less than ten Logies, along with several awards for her performances in numerous productions including Cabaret, The Sound of Music and South Pacific, Lisa has kept very busy over the years with roles in long running shows like Blue Heelers and Sea Patrol. They are roles that have cemented the 42 year old as one of the most reliable and popular actresses on our TV screens. After last appearing on TV as a guest star on ABC’s ‘Rake’, Lisa is back with her new show ‘Reef Doctors’, which is aimed at bringing back ‘family drama’ to TV. Set on the fictional remote location of ‘Hope Island’ the show follows the adventures of the local clinic which is run by Dr Sam Stewart (McCune), a single mother. The thirteen part series was filmed in Far North Queensland and on the Gold Coast, a spot that Lisa is used to filming after many years on ‘Sea Patrol’. “We shot a lot of it just out of Port Douglas, as we need to film in a certain water depth, and it was really amazing,” Lisa said from her home in Melbourne. “I look back on it now, and it was such a huge undertaking to do that. I had to get my scuba licence and my boat licence, but it was just great fun and a great opportunity to do that. I’m up trees, I’m abseiling,…its great to do a show like this as you never know what’s going to happen next. “Any job you do that you love, you’d have to be made to not realise how lucky you are. If we are filming up there we do about a month then double that at the studios, and its nice to have facilities nearby. They are right next to Movie World, and we have Mt. Tamborine just behind, and there’s a property we can use which doubles as Hope Island.” Lisa is co-producer on the show, and it was always the intention to make the show ‘family friendly’, something that she felt was missing from TV.

“I was doing Sea Patrol at Warner Brothers, and producer Jonathon M Shiff was in the next studio next door We just got talking about the concept of Reef Doctors, and came up with some ideas, and it all started from there. “Plus we both wanted to do a family drama. We felt there was a missing link for family audiences at the moment. Most 8.30 dramas don’t end till 9.45 or 10.00 which is too late for kids…we really wanted to do a show that families could watch together. “We’ve been producing really great drama in this country but maybe we’ve forgotten about that audience. We have Home & Away and Neighbours, and what we were doing was taking some of the productions from that 8.30 time slot and putting that into a family drama. We just thought let’s make something that families can watch, in a great location with drama. “Audiences in Europe love to watch this show, I’ve seen it dubbed into German, and there was a German partner investing in the show. We also had a German actress who joined the cast, Susan Hoecke, and she was magnificent. It’s nice to have an international cast which doesn’t often happen.” As mother to three children, ranging in age from 8 to 12, McCune realises that sometimes she has to take the family on location. “Filming always seems to clash with school holidays and cyclone season, but we make it work, and interestingly we had some bumpy weather on the Gold Coast more than up north, we had lots of days change due to clouds and rain. But, the kids treat it like a big adventure, they love it up there. “As co-producer I saw it as an opportunity, and for me I felt like a work experience student. I was there when we were storylining, I had a hand in the casting, plus when we were filming I would watch rushes at night and make comments. For me, it was just a chance to observe and be involved in the whole production process.” Lisa was last seen in Brisbane in a production of ‘South Pacific’, which is still

touring the country, and it’s the latest in a long line of shows that McCune has starred in. “Live audiences are great, because it’s a bit dangerous, and things can go wrong. I was on stage last week and a piece of scenery fell down, and I had to move over and pick it up. That tests you as a performer. On TV it’s a different environment, I like them both for different reasons. Performing at night is fantastic but I’m at the point I want to be home in the evenings, I’m not built to do that. I’m really good at getting up and being at work on time day in day out. The six years on Blue Heelers was great for me not to have a life in my twenties, I thrived on that and I loved that discipline.” Lisa is very quick to answer what role she would give her right arm for. “My dream role on stage would be to play Anna in ‘The King and I’. TV-wise I love all the drama on TV now. I adore ‘Phryne Fisher’ and ‘A Place to Call Home’…anything where I can frock up and wear those great outfits! “I’ve got another tour of South Pacific to do and some other projects on the boil.” Reef Doctors is currently screening Friday nights on Network Ten

With an eye for business opportunities and a taste for beautiful women, Paul Raymond (Steve Coogan), realised early on that sex sells. Starting his career with a mind-reading act, Raymond soon realised that the audience were more interested in watching his beautiful assistant, and that they liked it even more if she was topless. So in 1958 he opened a gentlemen’s nightclub that was so hot no man could resist it. A huge success, it became the cornerstone of Raymond’s Soho empire which included a men’s magazine, nude theatre productions and millions in real estate and property. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson lead the returning cast in Fast & Furious 6, the latest instalment of the blockbuster franchise. As the title suggests, the film is action packed from beginning to end. Those who have seen the previous movies will know straight away that the storyline is secondary to the stunts, and the film certainly delivers on that. The stunts are spectacularly oversized - matched only by The Rock’s physique. Johnson reprises his role of special crimes officer Hobbs who turns up at Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) place asking for his help. He asks Dom to reassemble his team to help him take down a skilled team of drivers who are a threat to national security. Turns out Letty (from the last movie) lost her memory and is now working for the precision driven Shaw (Luke Evans), the mastermind for the hits against the military and other law enforcement units. The love drama between Dom and Letty is nicely woven into the storyline, but really its all the about cars and the stunts. Just enjoy the non-stop action sequences, you will not be disappointed. Oh, make sure you stay; once the credits start to roll, look out for a teaser of what’s to come…looks like this movie series isn’t going to the car wreckers just yet! For active children, pain and injury can be exacerbated during sport, so its important to be able to recognise a few common lower limb aches and pains that may affect your child. *Flat feet – is a condition in which the foot appears as if the arch is flat or the ankles are rolling inwards. * Heel Pain/Severs Disease is an injury to the growth plate of the heel bone where the Achilles tendon attaches. Pain at the back of the heel bone is made worse with exercise. * Knee Pain/Osgood Schlatters – a common cause of knee pain in young children, causing tenderness and swelling just below the knee and down the shin. * Frequent Ankle Sprains – one of the most common injuries in children, occurring when there is a sudden twisting motion at the ankle. * Growing Pains – these can affect any child 3 years up and affect the calf muscles, thighs or behind the knee. Occurs in the evening and at

night and normally gone by the morning. The good news is, the right footwear and consultation with a Podiatrist can alleviate many of these injuries, and help lessen the impact. With Sportco’s 3iD Video Analysis system their specialist team can find the right shoe for the job. For more information and a free consultancy, see the staff at Sportsco Riverlink, or phone 3281 1227. Below: Troy Simpson with the 3iD Video Analysis Unit.

It’s Tax Time at ITP

Tax Time at G.J. Walsh & Co Tax time is upon us again and the team at G J Walsh & Co is ready to help clients take the pain out of managing their income tax requirements. We have a dedicated team who are committed to remaining up to date with all legislative changes and are ready to provide a professional and friendly service again this tax season. With the end of financial year here, there are a few changes individuals should consider when preparing their income tax returns for the year ended 30 June 2013. Firstly, the Personal Tax Rates have changed this year, with the tax free threshold increasing from $6,000 to $18,200, which means that taxpayers do not have to pay tax on the first $18,200 of their taxable income. However, the tax on taxable income between $37,001 $80,000 has increased from 30c to 32.5c. Small businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $2 million may be entitled to the new small business concession rules which include the instant asset writeoff threshold which has increased from $1,000 to $6,500. Small businesses can claim an accelerated initial deduction for motor vehicles acquired in 2012-13 and subsequent

years. For vehicles purchased for a cost of more than $6,500, small businesses may be entitled to claim an initial deduction of $5,000 plus 15% of the balance purchase price. Our purpose is to create total client satisfaction through our talented people, specialised expertise, and a personal approach that delivers results. Their commitment has always been to offer the best solutions for our clients long term financial objectives and goals. To achieve that we have focused on solutions using quality comprehensive planning and thinking, including structures and strategies that we firmly believe set the right course for our clients and add true value into the future. It is our aim to establish strong relationships with our clients, becoming an integral part of their business structure, adding value every step of the way through our proactive approach and driving their success. Visit GJ Walsh and Co at the top of town at 213 Brisbane Street, Ipswich, phone 3812 3838 or visit our website www.gjwalsh.com.au

The end of the financial year is almost upon us again and in these tough economic conditions, it is time to start thinking about how to get the maximum refund from your tax return this year. There have been a few important changes to the tax landscape this year. Firstly the tax free threshold has increased to $18,200. When you add in the low income tax offset this means you won’t pay any tax if your income is below $20,542. You may still have to lodge a tax return (if your income is below that level) if you have had tax withheld from your wage or salary – it is the only way you will get your money back. Another important change this year is that the ATO will be paying all individual refunds electronically. So you will need to advise your bank account details to your tax agent or in your own return if you prepare it yourself. For those people with private health insurance, the rebate is now subject to an income test so you need to be careful with those details. There is also an income test applied for the medical expenses offset. Unless your spouse is an invalid or a carer (or you live in a remote area of Australia) you can no longer claim the spouse offset if your spouse was born after 1 July 1952. If you are running a small business there may be a significant increase in the value of the assets you can write-off. With all these changes why take

unnecessary risks in preparing your own return. See the friendly, trained staff at the Income Tax Professionals for a worry-free tax return with the best possible refund. Simply bring in all your tax information: - Payment summaries from your employer(s), Government payments (incl Newstart – yes, it is taxable) and any pensions; - Any interest or other investment income; don’t forget those all-important receipts for your deductible expenses: uniforms, tools, work related vehicle usage etc. - Your bank details and, if applicable, your private health insurance statement Your ITP tax consultant will sort it all out for you and take the hassle out of tax time for a very reasonable, tax-deductible fee. To make it completely painless, you can even pay nothing up-front and have the fee deducted from your refund. ITP have a number of locations in the western suburbs including a new office at Redbank Plains shopping centre. Call in to any of the offices for free advice about your tax affairs before June 30th. Locations are: Ipswich, 48A Nicholas St 3281 9360; Redbank Plains, Shop 3313B Level 3 Redbank Plains Shopping Centre 3818 7860; Goodna, Shop 6A St Ives Professional Centre Smith Rd 3818 0951. From 1st July there will also be additional locations in Riverlink Shopping Centre and a second booth at Redbank Plains Shopping Centre near Coles.

Message from Mayor Paul Pisasale The City of Ipswich is developing a reputation for as a strong local economy which is set to continue to grow. Ipswich’s current population of 175,000 is predicted to more than double in less than 20 years. By 2031 our resident population will be around 462,000. The city will maintain an above average growth rate which is exciting for the future job prospects of our children. Importantly, this will happen based on sustainable development principles. To help support local jobs Ipswich City Council has partnered with Building Industry Online to link local builders and contractors with major building projects in the Ipswich region. A new website www.bioipswich.com.au has been created in response to calls from selfemployed tradesmen, local contractors and suppliers who often miss out on work on the

bigger construction jobs. The website lists major construction firms and projects planned or underway and enables smaller local businesses to bid for work on these major projects. Building Industry Online is a national company that provide an easy to use service for those in the building and construction industry through an online tender and construction management system. The joint initiative to launch BIO Ipswich is a major boost for local businesses and contractors as it provides a strong support base for the Ipswich business community. Supporting local business and local jobs is a win-win for Ipswich businesses and families. The Ipswich Building Industry Online portal is one of several initiatives from Ipswich City Council which are designed to foster employment opportunities and help our city to continue to grow. FOCUS ON EDUCATION Catholic schools lead the way in lifelong learning Students from a number of Catholic primary schools across Brisbane Archdiocese gathered for a Caritas Australia Just Leadership Day. With places quickly filling in Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools, now is the time for parents to think about enrolling for 2014. Significant growth in enrolments over the past 10 years indicated the value families placed upon a faith-based, high quality education for their children. Almost 70,000 students and 10,000 staff in 137 Catholic schools from Childers in the north, west to Kingaroy and south to the Gold Coast began 2013 with a big welcome to two new schools: Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School at Springfield Lakes and St Benedict’s College at Mango Hill. Catholic schools now educate almost one in five Queensland children across Queensland

and working closely with local Catholic parishes, are an important face of the Church to young families seeking support in their challenging work of parenting and educating their children. As welcoming communities, those of different cultural backgrounds and faith traditions are made to feel at home and every student is given the opportunity to experience success by reaching their full potential in all aspects of school life. For more information about a Catholic school near you or an enrolment pack visit www. brisbanecatholicschools.com.au or call (07) 3033 7000. Below: Students at the Caritas Leadership Day.

Personalised learning at Good Shepherd Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, Springfield Lakes, opened at the start of this year. It’s already developed a reputation for excellence and for personalised, individual attention for each student. Principal, Judith Seery, said personalised learning was helping children develop as confident, enthusiastic and effective learners – a central purpose of primary education. “A walk through our classrooms shows children engaged in their learning through many and varied activities,” she said. Ms Seery said that a 21st century education meant emphasis was still placed on the vital skills of literacy and numeracy, but with the addition of a broader range of other skills. Often referred to as life skills, they include: · Decision making · Resilience · Problem solving · Learning how to learn · Effective communication · Creative and lateral thinking · Research skills · Able to transfer skills into new ideas and events not experienced before. For this reason, at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, we believe in a process of problem solving, investigating and inquiry learning. We belong to the welcoming, inclusive parish community of Our Lady of the Southern Cross Parish and partner with

the well-established and highly regarded St Augustine’s College at Augustine Heights. Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School is now accepting applications for places in 2014. Limited places are also available for immediate entry. Fees are very affordable, and family concessions are available. Parents interested in applying, or finding out more, are encouraged to visit the school’s website www.goodshepherd.qld.edu.au, and to organise a visit to the master-planned campus at Springfield Lakes, or phone 3437 5000 to make an appointment to visit.

Bipartisan support for The Shadow Minister for Defence, David Johnston, says that RAAF Base Amberley will continue to grow as one of Australia’s super defence bases, should the Coalition win government in September - and he supports the Super Hornet and Joint Strike Fighter as the future combat aircraft for the RAAF. During a visit to the air base with the Liberal candidate for Blair, Teresa Harding and Stuart Robert, the Liberal member for Fadden, Mr Johnson outlined the Coalition’s position on aspects of Australian Defence Force capability. RAAF Amberley is home to three important and relatively new air power capabilities, in the F/A-18F Super Hornet, the KC-30A airrefueller and the C-17A global airlifter. The significant impact these aircraft platforms have on ADF combat and support capability is well undersood by the Shadow Defence Minister. “The Super Hornets are creating a huge impression on seasoned pilots who can see a fabulous capability that is going to protect Australia and deliver a guarantee for national security for the next 20 years,” Mr Johnston said. “It’s the litmus test of a good capability, providing a dominant fighting and winning capability in the air, and that’s what these aircraft absolutely do, and they take us to another generation.”

On the subject of the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, the Shadow Minister said that a future Coalition government would continue with the F-35 acquisition as Australia’s future fighter alongside the Super Hornet, even though the flyaway cost of the F-35 seems to be increasing. “Every day we see costs coming down for the F-35; this is an aircraft we must have. Its radar, its tactical datalinks, its visual acuity for the pilot, its capacity to do things no other fighter aircraft can do guarantees that Australia will again be regionally dominant, out to 2050. “Ultimately, 4000 of those aircraft will be built. We will leverage off being an early participant in the program, and the bulk of our acquisition will be at a really reasonable cost, such that a lot of countries around the world will be quite jealous of what we have. “The Super Hornets provide us with the insurance we need, to have the pressure off and make some strong long-term decisions.” Mr Johnston likened the current misgivings about the F-35 to similar issues with the F-111s 50 years ago when critics labelled it “too expensive, too sophisticated, and unproven.” “New technology always has its detractors but I thing F-35 will be fabulous.” he said. Recent cutbacks in Defence spending, outlined in the Defence White Paper, are a

Super Hornet and JSF concern for the Coalition. “Tony Abbott has said that we are in an emergency situation, with Defence spending reduced to 1938 levels, as a percentage of GDP,” Mr Johnston said. “Defence needs to carry some of the burden but not all of it,” he said. “Losing 25 billion dollars out of one portfolio will take some years to recover from. To get back to where things should be [in Defence spending] will take a long time, and we really need to do things cost effectively in Defence.” For her part, Teresa Harding sees a tough fight on her hands against the incumbent Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann.

“It’s certainly going to be a tight fight, and it’s still a marginal seat, but I’m out there every day selling the Coalition’s message of basically building a stronger economy,” Ms Harding said. “Certainly, here in this electorate the Carbon Tax has hit us really badly, especially in manufacturing. “Some of the manufacturers I speak to spend more than a million dollars a year in Carbon Tax alone, and that means they employ fewer people. “I think that people will see my honesty, my integrity, I’m a hard worker, and being part of the Coalition we will get the economy back on track.”

PROPERTY & FINANCE BY MARK BOURIS

Financial health check This Tax time is approaching and many readers will be digging out their paperwork, putting their finances in order. Why not use this time to give yourself a financial health check? Here are some questions you need to ask yourself: Home Loans. Have you reviewed your home loan in the past 12 months? There’s a spread between standard variable mortgage rates of around 5 – 6.2 per cent. That’s a potential repayment difference of around $235 a month on a $300,000 mortgage. Insurance. Are you appropriately covered? Take a look at your home and contents – what would it cost to replace your belongings if something went wrong? What about life insurance? You want to make sure all your debts are covered and your family has enough to live off in case something happened to you. It’s worth also looking into trauma and/or income protection cover in the event of an illness or accident. If you had to stop working, how would you pay your bills? If you don’t know what you need, engage an adviser to help you get the best premiums and ensure you’re adequately covered.

Savings. Do you know how much you have in savings? Do you have a plan for it? Cash is valuable and you can’t let it be eaten by inflation. Review the interest rates you are paid and compare it with other products, whether they are savings accounts or term deposits. Super. Do you know how much you have in super and how it’s performing? Go to your account and see how much you have, and what it is returning. Also, look closely at what fees are coming out: super funds vary in their overall fees by a factor as large as 2 per cent per year. Even if you go to a fund charging 1 per cent less than your current fund, the difference – over 30 years – adds up to tens of thousands of dollars. Small differences in fund performance produce big results in the long run, so spend some time selecting your investment options. Match volatility to your risk profile and life stage. Household costs. How much are you paying just to live? Review your telephone packages, your internet, your electricity/ gas account and your petrol bill. By simply reviewing these household overheads, most people can save over $100 a month, which could be put to good use on your loan or in your super.

Nissan Pulsar comeback complete The Pulsar’s comeback to the Australian market is now complete as Nissan launched the all-new Pulsar hatch, including the return of the SSS performance variant. The launch of the Pulsar hatch follows the re-introduction of the Pulsar sedan to the Australian market in February this year, which has already seen the much-loved nameplate return to the ‘best sellers’ list in the competitive Small Passenger Car segment. “The Australian market has embraced the Pulsar sedan since its launch in February. Now we can offer an even more compelling case with the four grades of Pulsar hatch, including two turbocharged variants,” said Nissan Motor Company (Australia) Managing Director and CEO William F Peffer Jr. “The Nissan Pulsar hatch is an extremely competitive, value-rich proposition for Australian new car buyers. And for those looking for additional excitement, the return of the Pulsar SSS offers affordable excitement from a performance hatch, powered by Nissan’s 1.6-litre DIG (Direct Injection Gasoline) Turbo engine.” The launch of the Pulsar hatch is the latest instalment in Nissan Australia’s continued series of new-model introductions. Australian sales of new Nissan vehicles have powered to new

heights in the previous 14 months, fuelled in part by the introduction of a number of popular all-new models such as the Nissan Patrol V8 and the all-new Pulsar Sedan. A number of Nissan models have also received a variety of updates this year, including the all-conquering GT-R supercar, the 370Z coupe and roadster ranges and the ever-popular DUALIS small SUV, now available with a diesel variant. The turbocharged variants of the Pulsar Hatch come with a six-speed manual transmission or Nissan’s Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) featuring M-Mode (Manual Mode) to allow seamless shifting – the luxury of an auto but the performance and control of a manual. For all things Nissan, contact local dealer Ian Boettcher Nissan on 3282 2722.
