Sport has always been in the blood of Ipswich’s Rachael Mackenzie. Her father, Stuart, was a silver medallist at the Olympics, but she never imagined that she could do things, like lifting a 110kg concrete ball onto a barrel, pulling a 1957 Chevrolet for 30 metres or deadlifting 175kg! These are just some of the things that Rachael has achieved in her quest to win titles at ‘Strongwoman’ events, which are gaining popularity and starting to pop up everywhere as a serious sport. At her first event on the Sunshine Coast last year, she won each of the four challenges, finishing first overall. Not bad for a first timer. She has since won a second event, came fourth at the NSW state titles, and recently took part in the Queensland Strongwoman Championships. The 36 year old from Karana Downs had sport in her blood, after her father was a champion rower. Stuart Mackenzie won silver at the 1956 Olympics plus won the Henly Regatta a record six times straight, which is the world’s most prestigious rowing event. “I guess I’d always been into fitness,” Rachael said. “My dad always said I should play tennis or golf but sadly I can’t play either. I did athletics for the State as a kid. I started doing weights seriously when I was 16 and I got meningitis. I was in a coma for 16 hours and I just had a vision or a dream, and saw myself lifting weights. After I recovered that year I entered the heptathlon and eventually was coaching the state team. “My dad who lives in the UK now was known to be the annoying ‘ocker’ of the rowing industry, and maybe I get my loudness from him!” Rachael said Rachael had a daughter at 20 and sadly lost her partner when he was just 21, but he taught her how to box which led to an interest in kickboxing. “He taught me how to box and then I moved to Queensland from Sydney.

A WORD FROM THE

EDITOR When he passed away I had a good group of people around me and many said to me ‘why aren’t you kickboxing?’ It was was all the rage then. I had a few fights, which was great, but got to the point nobody wanted to fight me. “I kept training though and then a friend suggested I try Crossfit which I’d never heard of and that involved a lot of lifting weights. I ended up competing that year at the national regional titles which was a great experience. With the style of lifting involved in that I started to see how strong I was, and then stumbled across a strongman event last year on the Sunshine Coast and won all four events. I kept training, and met a lot of people at that event who then invited me to train on the Gold Coast. “I’d not done many comps till then, but it was a natural progression. First night I went there they all said to me ‘why aren’t you powerlifting?’ “I looked into it and found that Powerlifting is three set events…Bench Press, Deadlift and Squat, which means I can train really hard for those three movements. Strongwoman events are varied, and they test your strength in lots of different ways. “The event I first tried had four events consisting of pulling a 1957 Chevrolet 30 metres, carrying weights over a course with 60kg in each hand, flipping a giant tyre seven times for time, and lifting max weights of your choice for total, where I did 150kg. “All of a sudden I’m finding out about all

these strongman/strongwoman events all over the place. It was free entry to the NSW State Titles, and it was different for me as I was competing against people who’d been doing this for years. “I figured I had nothing to lose, and did three personal bests. One of the events was lifting three concrete stones onto a barrel which was really hard. First was 85kg, the next was 110kg and I lifted it, got it on the barrel, (I still have no idea how I did that), but the last one was 120kg and couldn’t get it moving! “I’ve just competed at the Queensland Strongman/Strongwoman titles and I plan to keep going and giving it my all. I’m a clean athlete. I will not compromise myself. It’s just a fast way to injury. I plan to compete for me, and better myself every time I go out there.” Rachael is also in the process of getting her dream job as a dog handler with the RAAF at Amberley. “Its been my dream for a long time. I’m the daughter of a woman who has bred and shown dogs her whole life, handling dogs is something that comes naturally to me. I have friends who say their dogs get so excited when they see me, and I think I have a knack for policing, being stern and not taking a backwards step with people. My daughter says I have this ‘presence’, and says none of my friends would

dare cross me, which I think is funny. “My advice to anyone who doesn’t think they can’t lift big numbers…just do it. Don’t be put off by your size. The biggest hurdle is in your head. Don’t let other people’s opinion or society’s words get in your way, you’ll be surprised by what you can lift. I never imagined I’d be doing strongwoman events! “I just want to train harder, isn’t that the only way to train? My goal is to lift 200kg. It’s a way away, about 25kg now, but if I use my last 12 months of gains, its about 12 months down the track. I want to stay injury free, and ‘headspace free’ in espect I want nothing holding me back.“ Below: Mackenzie vs Chevrolet. The car lost.

School holiday time, yay! The drive to work is much quicker, no running around tyring to get the kids dressed in time, and no making lunches wondering if this time they will actually eat the piece of fruit! But the best thing about school holidays is the movies. I don’t care how old you are, kids movies ROCK. Why? Easy....there are no boring bits! In this issue we talk with possibly the strongest woman in Ipswich, Rachael Mackenzie who is fast getting a name for herself on the sporting circuit. Plus we’ve got the views from the top of the ICON Tower which sadly will not be open to workers or the public, but we got some pics anyway. Yay! We’ve got our usual news round ups, defence news, giveaways, entertainment news, food, fashion and one of my favourite features each year, in the Ipswich Cup reader’s photos. We love to see everyones pics from the big day, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like seeing their face in print? Like us on Facebook for the next callout and YOU could be in the next issue! Till next time.... E: darren@strikepublications.com.au

Donation to assist businesses

OUT AND ABOUT IN

Businesses who were hit by the floods have received some support from the Mayor’s Flood Appeal to the value of $24,000.

Way to keep active in Winter WITH PAUL PISASALE

Park Fit

Ipswich City Council has partnered with the Ipswich Hospital Foundation to deliver a new physical activity program, Park Fit. It’s held from 9am every Tuesday at Limestone Park where a qualified personal trainer will deliver a fun exercise session using the free outdoor gym equipment.

Active pets, owners

Dogs need regular exercise to be healthy and to stop them becoming bored and barking or digging. Most dogs need a walk or run at least once a day and if you would like some company, there are a number of dog-friendly walking groups in Ipswich, as well as off-leash dog parks.

Get physical

With free and low cost activities offered by Ipswich Hospital Foundation, Ipswich PCYC and a number of other community organisations, there are no excuses. Visit the link above and find out more about activities for everyone. Joining a fitness group and meeting like-minded people is a great way to stay motivated.

Many of the businesses lost equipment and hardware when the second round of floods hit earlier this year, and after the 2012 event, many of the businesses in question just couldn’t afford the massive hike in insurance costs. Each business owner was asked their preference of vouchers from Bunnings, Masters, Woolworths and Coles to assist them to replace equipment and goods lost to the floodwaters. Vouchers were paid entirely from public and corporate donations to the Mayor’s Flood Appeal managed by the Ipswich Mayor’s Community Fund Inc. A total of 12 businesses which were floodaffected in January this year applied for assistance. Each business received vouchers to the value of $2,000. Amongst the recipients were Bundamba Auto Wreckers, Ipswich Automatic Transmission Repairs, Pearls Radiators, Crossfit Western Front, Keogh Street Mechanical, Millers Joinery, City Steel Fabrication, Sandy Gallop Golf Club, Mika House, Ipswich Golf Club, Russell Bernitt Auto Repairs and Ipswich & District Fire Equipment Services. Warwick Martin from Pearls Radiators said that the vouchers will go a long way in

helping replace items lost in the floods. “These vouchers will help to get some new equipment in the workshop, we need to freshen up some things and replace some bits and pieces we lost to the waters,” he said. “In all honesty, it was the time frame we were closed that hurt the most. We still have to pay staff, and those couple of weeks out of action was tough. “We had no flood coverage. As soon as you ask for flood coverage and tell them where you are it doesn’t happen...we are the first to go under and the last to get washed out. We bought the business back in 2009, and its been here since 1961 so we are so well established and we can’t just pack up and move. So many people know where we are, and you just have to roll with the punches. “We knew 2011 was a freak of nature, and to have it happen again was just a kick up the bum. I’d like to see sandbags made available quicker if it happens again so that we can prevent water getting where we can, but the donation from the Mayor’s Flood Appeal will enable me to replace some equipment which is great.” Below: Brandon Swan from Crossfit Western Front, who saw his gym go underwater, Mayor Paul Pisasale and Warwick Martin from Pearls Radiators benefit from the Flood Appeal.

Mum and Bub activities

Having a new baby can take a toll on your sleep, eating and exercise, but having a great support base can help you get out and get active. The Ipswich Hospital Foundation offers a number of fun activities and group exercises including Mum and Bub Fitness Group and Stroller Boot Camp. www.ihfoundation.org.au/cms/fitness.

Walk or Cycle Ipswich

Visit council’s website you can find out about a number of social walking and cycling groups. Get together with family and friends and join a group near you for a great way to be social, active and have fun.

The road to Improvement Each time I drive along the Ipswich Motorway I am reminded of how much the $2.8 billion upgrade between Dinmore and Goodna has improved the driving experience. It has been a great joy to see this part of the Motorway upgraded, as it was a key part of my election campaign in 2007. Regular users of the Ipswich Motorway will be pleased to know that the Federal Government has committed a further $279 million for the Darra to Rocklea section. This will complete the Motorway upgrade. I understand how frustrating road works can be and appreciate the patience shown by Warrego Highway drivers. The Federal Government has invested $54 million to upgrade the notorious Blacksoil Interchange. I anticipate this will be completed next year. As the local Federal Member I appreciate how important roads are. To date, this Government has invested $53.4 million in financial assistance grants to the local Councils and $9.8 million in Roads to Recovery. This is on top of the most significant infrastructure investment being rolled out locally: the National Broadband Network. This will transform the way we work, learn and live. I encourage you to keep up with any news via my website: www.ShayneNeumann. com.au. Feel free to ask me a question or post a comment on my Facebook (ShayneNeumann-MP) or Twitter (@ ShayneNeumannMP) sites. Otherwise call my office on 3201 5300 to find out my mobile office locations. Ipswich welcomes resident No.180,000

Park2Park set for Sunday, July 28

The City of Ipswich reached a new population milestone recently with official recognition of the city’s 180,000th resident.

Registrations are now open for one of the most popular sporting events of the year, the 9th Ipswich Park2Park (P2P).

The City of Ipswich reached a new population milestone recently with official recognition of the city’s 180,000th resident. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale, Planning and Development Committee chairman Cr Paul Tully and local councillor Sheila Ireland officially welcomed Devika Kumari to her Springfield Lakes home. “Population figures show Ipswich is defying trends elsewhere and continuing to grow at a strong rate,” Cr Pisasale said. “Ipswich reached 170,000 in the third quarter of 2010, and 175,000 in November 2011. This most recent increase equates to 68 people calling Ipswich their new home every week. Planning Chairperson Cr Paul Tully said the master planned community centred on Springfield Lakes was one of several major growth areas within the Ipswich local government area. “Major new commercial and residential development continues to offer residents improved services and opportunities for employment during this period of sustained growth. “New public transport options are also increasing with the Springfield Central train station on track to open later this

year and makes us the fastest growing local government area in Queensland. Division 9 councillor Sheila Ireland said Springfield Lakes was a highly sought-after location, especially for young families and first home buyers. “This master planned community offers affordable housing, and a range of excellent facilities including regionally significant parks such as Robelle Domain, a choice of private and public schools, sporting clubs, a university, major shopping at Orion Town Centre and a future Mater hospital. “Ipswich warmly welcomes new residents and all they can offer to the community.” Caption: Cr Paul Tully, Devika Kumari, Mayor Paul Pisasale, Salesh Deo, and Cr Sheila Ireland.

The P2P was developed to raise funds for the Ipswich Hospital Foundation and to provide an opportunity for Ipswich to participate in a healthy event. This year there have been several changes to and new categories to cover all aspects of fitness and age groups. This year the program consists of: 6.30 am Half Marathon 8.00 am 10 km run 8.45 am 5 km run 9.00 am 5 km walk 10.00 am Family Challenge 10.15 am Mascot Marathon Other categories include: *Park2Park Teams — get your friends, workmates or family members together,

with results based on the first 4 finisher’s times. The first 25 teams of 15 or more to register will receive a tent area allocation in the team village. * School Shield — a chance for primary and secondary school students and teachers to support their school through some healthy competition. * Steps Challenge — a FREE step challenge to help track your exercise and get you moving. Entrants are given a pedometer, plenty of low cost fitness activities to attend and motivation in the lead up to race day. Early bird registration closes on 15th July. View from the top of the Tower The views in these pictures are ones of Ipswich that until now have not been seen before, except from an aircraft. Ipswich Life was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the new ICON Tower in the Ipswich CBD, and incredibly from the roof, you can see clear as day the Brisbane CBD skyscrapers (see photo top left). It’s a view that sadly won’t be open to the public, with an expected twelve hundred public servants relocating from the Brisbane CBD to take up residency in the multi million dollar building. The roof itself is a plant level, which houses machinery, air conditioning and electrical plants that make the building eco friendly, with innovative ideas like collecting all the water from the roof into a water tank which is then used to flush the toilets, to all ten office levels below it. Sadly, the roof will not be open to workers in the building, or the public. All floors in the building are ecofriendly, with sensor lighting to work only when people are on that level, plus each floor has a meeting room at the front of the building which has windows that open onto Brisbane Street. A chemist and medical centre has already been leased and a café will take up the front entrance on the corner of Bell Street and Brisbane Street. There will also be 300 car parking

spaces under the building, including a great idea for office workers who want to ride to work. A large bike storage area has been provided for office workers, including showers so they can refresh before starting work. All workers will be issued swipe cards which will allow them only to visit the floors they are only authorised to enter, but features lifts which will not open without authorisation. All floors are identical and feature built-in workstations for all staff (below). Handover is set for August 31, and the building will be fully operational, including shops on Bell Street, by the end of the year.

ADVERTISING COMMUNITY FEATURE

See IGGS in action - Thursday 25 July Healthy body and healthy mind. It may be a cliché in your attitude to life, but it just happens to be one that works, and students at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School are loving the new fitness centre which is keeping students fit and ready to learn. Located on expansive grounds at the heart of Ipswich, Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School (IGGS) and Ipswich Junior Grammar School (IJGS) is a relatively small private school, with a focus on positive, personalised learning for each and every student. IGGS & IJGS offers more than fifty cocurricular activities, in sporting, cultural, community service, intellectual pursuits, performing arts, competitive and noncompetitive fields, to keep students mentally and physically active, which allows them to perform at their best. On Thursday 25th July, Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School including Ipswich Junior Grammar School will open its doors to prospective families to come along and see the school in action. From 9am to 11am, visitors can tour the school, see how students learn and interact in regular classes, meet the Principal, senior staff and the Enrolments Team. “We are opening our doors to the community, for prospective families to see for themselves what our wonderful school has to offer,” said Principal Dr Peter Britton. “On the day, families will be taken on tours led by our students, and they will have access to teaching staff as well as our Enrolments team who will be available to discuss the process of enrolling for 2014 and beyond. It’s a chance to learn about academic excellence at IGGS, where almost 100% of OP eligible IGGS graduates receive a tertiary offer, and 1 in 4 OP eligible graduates achieved an OP 1-5 in 2012.” Ipswich Junior Grammar School offers coeducation from Kindergarten to Year 4, with an on-site Early Education Centre (EEC) catering to the needs of boys and girls in both

Kindergarten and Pre-Prep. Girls are now able to attend the one school from Kindergarten right through to Year 12! The EEC is a cutting-edge facility that enables younger children to reap the benefits of Grammar School programs from an early age. The EEC offers planned learning activities, designed and delivered by qualified teaching staff. Boys and girls also have access to specialist lessons including Physical Education, Music and the Junior School Library. The Junior School is focused on ensuring students are well equipped to take the first steps towards achieving individual potential, and are well prepared to take on the challenges of higher education. The Junior School offers smaller class sizes, modern, purpose-built facilities, with learning that’s designed to inspire, challenge and motivate students. Ipswich Girls’ Grammar offers a dedicated Middle School from Years 7 to 9, where girls receive special guidance through the transition from primary to secondary schooling. Girls learn the principles of Positive Psychology through the Life Skills program, to enhance their resilience and social and emotional development. The Senior School at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar is from Year 10 to 12 and offers advanced subjects, a focus on leadership, comprehensive career education, and extensive pastoral care. As well as learning from passionate teaching staff, the girls are supported by a committed Pastoral Care team and professional Counsellors to ensure that they are well placed to achieve the best results based on their individual goals. “We recently opened our Fitness Centre and

Human Movements Laboratory, the third of three recent major projects to be completed at IGGS & IJGS,” Dr Britton said. “These facilities enable students to maintain their fitness, and teaching staff are available to write individual fitness programs for the girls. The Centre provides a place for our sporting teams to improve their strength and conditioning. “The Centre for Young Women’s Health and Wellbeing focuses on nurturing students’ mental-health and wellbeing and is very popular with the students.” Recently, the School opened an impressive Fitness Centre, where girls are able to attend spin classes, use weights and rowing

machines, and compete against each other on cycles through virtual circuits such as European roads and parts of the Tour de France route. The School offers a comprehensive private bus service, shared with Ipswich Grammar School, before and after school care, as well as day boarding, a popular option for busy parents who might need a few extra hours in the afternoon for work and other commitments, before collecting girls from the boarding house by 9pm. To learn more about IGGS & IJGS at their Open Morning on 25 July, register today at www.girlsgrammar.com.au or call 3454 4447.

You can’t handle the truth! It’s a line that most movie fans know, but what many people don’t know is that the Tom Cruise movie ‘A Few Good Men’ was based on a play, and now’s your chance to see that play here in Ipswich. ‘A Few Good Men’, by Aaron Sorkin, is in final weeks of rehearsal for opening night on the 16th July at the Ipswich Incinerator Theatre. Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee is a brash Navy lawyer who is charged with defending two marines accused of killing a fellow soldier in a military hazing incident, allegedly known as a Code Red. These Marines, Kaffee and others involved in this case, are confronted with

complex issues of loyalty and honour, dealing with the marine’s most sacred code and the Corps most formidable warrior, Colonel Nathan R. Jessop. Haunted by his own demons and his famous father, Kaffee journeys with these marines towards a fate that is life changing for all involved. The plot is partially based on an incident involving the author Sorkin’s sister in her position as a military litigator in the late 1980’s. Sorkin has also written screenplays ‘Moneyball’ and ‘The Social Network’ as well as the TV series, ‘The West Wing’.

fully escorted tour to France

This play is beautifully written and promises to have audiences totally absorbed from beginning to end. It does contain some coarse language, sexual references and low level violence. With two performances already sold out, tickets remain for the nights of July 16, 20 and 26 and the matinee on Sunday 21 July. Tickets can be purchased online at www. ipswichlittletheatre.com.au and at the Visitors Information Centre, phone 3281 0555.

America is a country with a land area of about 9.6 million sq km. It has a population of more than 310 million people, currently the world’s third largest. Independence Day, 4th of July is celebrated with music, dancing, tours, exhibitions, food and of course those iconic fireworks and even hot dog-eating contests. It boasts densely populated cities with sprawling suburbs and naturally beautiful areas, history and is the land of the stars. Whatever takes your fancy you will find it? Take the whole family, there is something for everyone. The weakening of the Australian dollar has shown no effect at this stage of the desire by Australians to visit America. Alaska continues to show growth with an expected 31 large cruise ships scheduled to call 396 times in Alaska in 2013. Australians must remember before boarding a US bound flight or cruise vessel they must apply to enter the US under the Visa Waiver Program. New York is usually on everyone’s bucket list. It is home to some of the world’s most recognizable attractions and cherished landmarks. With so much to see

a trip to New York CIty may seem a little overwhelming but here is a list of some of the must see attractions: *Hop aboard a cruise to see the Statue of Liberty *Wander through Time Square *Ascend the Empire State Building *Enjoy the view from Top of the Rock Observation Centre at the Rockefeller Centre *Indulge in a show at Broadwa *Take a Horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park. *No visit would be complete without a little shopping time and what better place than Macy’s, the world’s largest department store. Renowned nutritionist returns to Ipswich Are you eating healthily and still not getting the results you want? Lacking energy? Having trouble losing weight? Confused by label claims in the supermarket? Want to make the best choices for your children? Don’t know what to feed your family? International presenter and best-selling author Cyndi O’Meara is returning to Ipswich to present her view on these topics, give insight into why the low-fat revolution isn’t working for us and share the journey she has been on over the last year. Cyndi is an advocate for ‘real food’ with the view that diets make us fat, chocolate is good for us, butter is better and that coffee isn’t so bad. She is a breath of fresh air who will teach you a simple set of principles that will improve your health and well being. Reading ingredients labels will never be the same once you hear the facts, they are not what they seem! “Thirty years ago the Australian public ate bacon and eggs, hot chips, meat pies and lamingtons – there was very little obesity,” she said. “The food eaten in the seventies and eighties was real food with a small number of ingredients. Today these same foods can be made up of over 90 ingredients, many of which are made in a chemical laboratory and the food can last for weeks. “Although these foods may look the same, fundamentally they are nothing alike - many of the ingredients that make up prepared, baked and packaged food have changed and the Australian public is oblivious. “Medical research shows that many lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, ADD and depression are directly caused by an engineered and manipulated food supply that is focussed on profit instead of health, and most people don’t even know they are consuming these foods,” she says. “You will be shocked at how our staple foods have changed and the effects this is having on us. Today we are facing the frightening statistic that one in three people are overweight or obese,” she said.

Cyndi has done extensive research on how our food has changed over the years and why you can be eating “healthily” and still not getting the right results. Allergies are increasing at a rapid rate and you have to ask yourself why we are becoming more and more intolerant to food? “As individuals and as parents we are all concerned about the chemical assault not just on ourselves but on our children.. Additives, preservatives, colourings, pasteurised, homogenised, shaken, stirred, stripped and sold! Where does it stop?” It is important to understand the foods that give health and the foods that cause inflammation. Ms O’Meara’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in nutrition from Deakin University in Victoria. She is a renowned international speaker and best selling author of the book series Changing Habits Changing Lives. Cyndi has appeared on television shows including Today Tonight, Brisbane Extra, Fresh, Jeff Janz and 9am with Kim and David. Cyndi visited Ipswich over 2 years ago and is returning due to popular demand. “I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone, sharing my journey and I really hope everyone will get heaps out of it,” she says. Cyndi will be speaking in Ipswich on Tuesday 16th July at the Showplace Reception Centre, Ipswich showgrounds from 6.30pm. Cost is just $10 and includes an organic light supper, tea, coffee and cake. Places are limited so bookings and pre-payment are essential. Phone Wray Organic Ipswich on 3812 3300 to reserve your place.

Pitfalls with rental properties More than eight million individuals own investment properties, and they can be a valuable investment and an excellent tax vehicle but there are some pitfalls to be aware of.

Tansey Partners sharing their 30 years experience One of Ipswich’s longest established CPA Practices, Liam J Tansey & Co this week celebrates its 30 year anniversary with a new brand, a new office and innovative approach to promoting Ipswich as a destination of choice for visiting clients. Director Martin Tansey said they are excited to herald in an exciting new phase for the firm which sees them rebrand to Tansey Partners and move to modern new offices at 18 Limestone St, Ipswich. “Our new brand symbolises growth and partnership with our clients and community. We have advised businesses and individuals in the Ipswich region for many years, and as their businesses have grown, so have we. “Over the years we have assisted our clients through many changes in legislation and business trading conditions, always with an eye to protecting their wealth and future,” he said. The father and son CPA team, which has over 50 years’ experience between them, has moved to new offices that will offer a range of new services to the clients.

“Over half of our new office is devoted to client reception and meeting area, with room to host ‘hot topic’ seminars in tax, super and financial planning. We are always looking for new ways to add value to clients,” Mr Tansey said. To show their passion for the community which has been the firms home for 30 years they are taking the opportunity to promote Ipswich to new and existing clients. “Our firm is encouraging clients that live outside of the city to ‘Visit Ipswich for advice, stay for the day’. The promotion showcases family-friendly activities and suggests retail and dining experiences in the city,” Mr Tansey said. The ground floor of the new premises at 18 Limestone Street was formerly occupied by Doctors Laurie and Nili Wood, who are now enjoying a well-deserved retirement. Medical specialists Dr Holt, Dr Mulhearn and Dr Varghese continue to be located on the upper floor. For more information about Tansey Partners please telephone 07 3202 1222.

Many investors make common mistakes in the preparation of their annual taxation returns with investment schedules. How was the income earned? Has the property been rented to a family member? Has the property been used by the owners for part of the tax year. Interest Expenditure claims can cause many issues. For example investment loans used for private expenditure. Travel expenses are another area of concern to the ATO. Expenses incurred prior to renting teh property can also cause timing issues. Is an item of expenditure a repair or a capital expenditure?

Do you have a depreciation report from a qualified source? Furthermore many investors do not claim some expenditure at all such as borrowing costs or refinancing costs. Finally, if you dispose of the property what are the capital gains matters that need to be considered? It’s Tax Time at ITP

Tax Time at G.J. Walsh & Co Tax time is upon us again and the team at G J Walsh & Co is ready to help clients take the pain out of managing their income tax requirements. We have a dedicated team who are committed to remaining up to date with all legislative changes and are ready to provide a professional and friendly service again this tax season. With the end of financial year here, there are a few changes individuals should consider when preparing their income tax returns for the year ended 30 June 2013. Firstly, the Personal Tax Rates have changed this year, with the tax free threshold increasing from $6,000 to $18,200, which means that taxpayers do not have to pay tax on the first $18,200 of their taxable income. However, the tax on taxable income between $37,001 $80,000 has increased from 30c to 32.5c. Small businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $2 million may be entitled to the new small business concession rules which include the instant asset writeoff threshold which has increased from $1,000 to $6,500. Small businesses can claim an accelerated initial deduction for motor vehicles acquired in 2012-13 and subsequent

years. For vehicles purchased for a cost of more than $6,500, small businesses may be entitled to claim an initial deduction of $5,000 plus 15% of the balance purchase price. Our purpose is to create total client satisfaction through our talented people, specialised expertise, and a personal approach that delivers results. Their commitment has always been to offer the best solutions for our clients long term financial objectives and goals. To achieve that we have focused on solutions using quality comprehensive planning and thinking, including structures and strategies that we firmly believe set the right course for our clients and add true value into the future. It is our aim to establish strong relationships with our clients, becoming an integral part of their business structure, adding value every step of the way through our proactive approach and driving their success. Visit GJ Walsh and Co at the top of town at 213 Brisbane Street, Ipswich, phone 3812 3838 or visit our website www.gjwalsh.com.au

The end of the financial year is almost upon us again and in these tough economic conditions, it is time to start thinking about how to get the maximum refund from your tax return this year. There have been a few important changes to the tax landscape this year. Firstly the tax free threshold has increased to $18,200. When you add in the low income tax offset this means you won’t pay any tax if your income is below $20,542. You may still have to lodge a tax return (if your income is below that level) if you have had tax withheld from your wage or salary – it is the only way you will get your money back. Another important change this year is that the ATO will be paying all individual refunds electronically. So you will need to advise your bank account details to your tax agent or in your own return if you prepare it yourself. For those people with private health insurance, the rebate is now subject to an income test so you need to be careful with those details. There is also an income test applied for the medical expenses offset. Unless your spouse is an invalid or a carer (or you live in a remote area of Australia) you can no longer claim the spouse offset if your spouse was born after 1 July 1952. If you are running a small business there may be a significant increase in the value of the assets you can write-off. With all these changes why take

unnecessary risks in preparing your own return. See the friendly, trained staff at the Income Tax Professionals for a worry-free tax return with the best possible refund. Simply bring in all your tax information: - Payment summaries from your employer(s), Government payments (incl Newstart – yes, it is taxable) and any pensions; - Any interest or other investment income; don’t forget those all-important receipts for your deductible expenses: uniforms, tools, work related vehicle usage etc. - Your bank details and, if applicable, your private health insurance statement Your ITP tax consultant will sort it all out for you and take the hassle out of tax time for a very reasonable, tax-deductible fee. To make it completely painless, you can even pay nothing up-front and have the fee deducted from your refund. ITP have a number of locations in the western suburbs including a new office at Redbank Plains shopping centre. Call in to any of the offices for free advice about your tax affairs before June 30th. Locations are: Ipswich, 48A Nicholas St 3281 9360; Redbank Plains, Shop 3313B Level 3 Redbank Plains Shopping Centre 3818 7860; Goodna, Shop 6A St Ives Professional Centre Smith Rd 3818 0951. From 1st July there will also be additional locations in Riverlink Shopping Centre and a second booth at Redbank Plains Shopping Centre near Coles.

OUT ANDABOUT

Sponsors, volunteers and eager participants were on hand for the official launch of the Ipswich Park2Park event on July 28th. Registrations are open now for the event which regularly attracts people in their thousands from all over South East Queensland. Ipswich Life was at the launch held at Catalyst Church in Brassall.

Ipswich Cup.. in Style It’s 6am on the morning of Ipswich Cup day and for the first time ever, I am with my fabulous hair stylist and a glass of bubbles just on sunrise in Ipswich’s main street. (Be sure to remind me this is how I want to begin all future cup days.) After a fairly wet week, the clouds blissfully disappeared, the sun was shining brightly and in a matter of hours so were the fashions. The nine horse races were run and enjoyed by thousands of frocked up fillies and strapping lads. From the best dressed, to the ones that dressed for laughs, there was eye catching looks everywhere you turned. Purple, orange and green, pink and black, burgundy and cream; spots, stripes, leopard prints; frills, tassles, pleats; oversized collared dresses, fitting pencil skirts, knee length tailored jackets; a fashion feast from traditional to eccentric. Several fillies adopted the spring racing carnival looks basking in the winter sunshine with bright floral strapless dresses (and hopefully their strapping lads were carrying their coats for sundown). The fascinators were breathtaking. Throughout the day I complimented several ladies and was thrilled to hear that so many had made their own head pieces. One of the ladies who had caught my attention early in the day, went on to be one of the fashion on the field finalists and I was so excited to learn she made her own fascinator. It was amazing! Oh I wish millinery was a talent I possessed. My favourite couple of the day also went on to be fashion on the field finalists showcasing a traditional look with a modern twist. Adorning a stunning lace dress, pearls and stunning local millinery made by Sandra-Ann millinery filled with warm winter tones of browns and soft netting welcomed her husband to coordinate with multi tones of brown, hat and all. Classic elegance! Front row for the heats of the couples and men’s categories as a guest judge of fashions on the field, it was a time to admire the ones who take pride in the extra special finishing touches. The day was also filled with fabulously dressed ladies and gents that didn’t enter the infamous fashions on the field but would have been sure to take a placing. One of the best dressed ladies on the day was a beautiful Ipswich lady who looked absolutely stunning in red, white and black. The subtle detailed trim of her corseted top, black velvet tailored jacket, red shoes and a black and red fascinator was perfect for the cool weather and exuded glamour! As we bid goodnight to Ipswich Cup for another year with the band playing their last song, there was already whispers of who was going to be wearing what next year. Thanks Ipswich for a great day!

Rotary recognises excellent work The Rotary Club of Ipswich has recognised excellence in the Ipswich workforce with its annual ‘Pride of Work Awards’. This prestigious event recognises people across the region for their exemplary contributions to the workplace and community. The awards are founded on Rotary’s motto of ‘Service before Self”, and Rotary’s international commitment to Vocational Service. All nominees received recognition at the Award Presentation Night, with award presentations by Mayor Paul Pisasale. The event highlighted the vital role of the health sector, with a keynote speaker address by Queensland’s Minister for Health, the Hon. Lawrence Springborg. Event organiser, Jan Gadsden said, “We had a full house of 120 guests at the Ipswich Club, and

recognised over 20 remarkable people in our community, who all go and beyond every day in their work. “This year, we were delighted to showcase our health sector, for their compassion and tireless work in the community, especially in fields as diverse as aged care, mental health, hospitals, private practice and hospice. “The support we received from the wider business community was amazing, and it is wonderful to see that so many business leaders clearly value their people.”

Winter Warming CHAR’D RESTAURANT AT THE P.A. HOTEL It’s that time of the year when the nights are colder, the days are shorter and the skirts are longer. Winter is officially here! But it’s not all doom and gloom, winters embrace means indulging in the decadent and divine. Think hot buttered rum by the fire, long winter boots and warm winter food like Mum used to make. Our favourite are Lamb Shanks that fall off the bone, are packed with vegies and served on a bed of creamy garlic mash. Winter, we welcome you with open arms and open mouths! Lamb Shanks with Creamy Garlic Mash Serves : 2 Ingredients: 2 lamb shanks 400g freshly chopped tomatoes 1 glass red wine 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 medium onions, chopped A pinch salt and pepper, for seasoning pinch dried thyme 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, and extra for garnish About 1 or 2 tablespoons olive oil, for frying 1 carrot, diced 1 tablespoon tomato puree 150ml chicken stock Directions Prep: 15min, Cook: 3hr, Ready: 3hr15min Pre-heat the oven to 160-170 degrees C. Heat oil and add the lamb shanks. Sear all around over medium to high heat. Remove and set aside. Reduce heat to medium then add the onions frying until translucent. Add the garlic, stir for 2 minutes then add the red wine and stock. Then add the remaining ingredients except for the rosemary garnish. Bring to the boil then place the lamb shanks into the dish. Reduce the heat to low and let the dish simmer for an hour. Use a spoon to coat the lamb shanks in sauce. Return to the oven. Repeat this process until the lamb is almost falling off the bone and the sauce has thickened. We let our shanks simmer for about 3 hours Serve with creamy mashed potatoes and garnish with a touch of rosemary. Soften it with a blend of Cabernet Shiraz Merlot from Wynns Coonawarra. Perfect. Tip: Get your shanks going on a Sunday morning so you can enjoy their rich aroma all day. If you can’t want to try it for yourself, check out our Lamb Shanks at Char’d Steakhouse for just $23.95. Wynns Coonawarra available at Harry Browns on special from next week only $12.90 goes beautifully with this dish.

In 1954, in a remote South American village, a four-year-old girl was abducted and later abandoned deep in the Colombian rainforest.

So begins the incredible true story of Marina Chapman, who went on to spend several years alone in the jungle, her only family a troop of capuchin monkeys. Using instinct to guide her, she copied everything they did and gradually learned to fend for herself.

At around ten years old, a completely feral Marina was returned to civilisation by hunters, who sold her as a slave to a brothel. This is her astonishing story. (Murdoch books)

NRL stars in State of Origin ‘cook off’ Former NRL star Wendell Sailor and Brisbane Broncos star Peter Wallace put their culinary skills to the test recently when they ‘cooked off’ against each other and met local fans in the Ipswich Mall. In town to help support the Ipswich Jets Indigenous event on July 6, the players were putting their skills to the test on barbecues, later auctioned off for their chosen charities. Fans were on hand to meet the stars who braved the weather to cook for the footy fans. “I’m pretty mean on the barbie, its my go,” said Brisbane Broncos player Peter Wallace representing New South Wales in the ‘cook off’. “Steaks my speciality, and I love doing crispy skin salmon on the barbie. As players we have to eat a lot of meat and fish. It always the case with the bigger blokes having to lose weight and the smaller blokes have to put it on, so our diets are controlled for us in many ways.” Peter was there to raise funds for his chosen

We’ve put it together as about thirty per cent of our players are indigenous . “We want to raise awareness of health, education, and there will be free admission for at the North Ipswich Reserve on the day for the big game again Souths,” Kieron said. “We’ll also have a jumping castle, local dancers and heaps of things to do for the kids, plus we’ll also be raising funds for the Arthur Beetson Foundation.” Admission is free to the event with kick off for the game against Souths set for 2.30pm.

Fighter aces in air combat over Darwin The most demanding fighter jet course conducted by the Air Force has concluded in the Northern Territory, with Exercise Aces North culminating five months of intensive Fighter Combat Instructor training for RAAF pilots and Weapon System Officers. The FCI Course puts RAAF aircrew through the most challenging and intensive situations faced during their career. FCI graduates form the next generation of Air Force elite tactical leaders.

Conducted every two years, the FCI Course takes experienced F/A-18 Classic Hornet pilots and F/A-18F Super Hornet pilots and Weapon System and trains them in simulated warlike operations, with support provided by the Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning & Control aircraft and the KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport. The Fighter Combat Controller and Fighter Intelligence Instructor courses run parallel to the Fighter Combat Instructor course, combining elite tactics development from a wide spectrum of capabilities. The Fighter Combat Instructor’s role is to provide leadership in the development of fighter tactics and determine how those tactics can be used to enhance the Australian Defence Force’s joint warfighting capability. Within the RAAF, every fighter pilot needs to be exposed to all types of missions that may be encountered in an operational environment. This includes basic air-to-air manoeuvring to air-to-ground attacks employing high-explosive ordnance, through to co-ordinating with the other armed forces in real scenarios. Proficiency in these combat roles delivers a true air combat capability. As the capabilities of combat and supporting elements evolve it’s the job of a fighter combat instructor to develop new tactics within individual squadrons to maximise air combat capability across the RAAF. Since its inception, No 2 Operational Conversion Unit (2OCU) has conducted 32 FCI courses operating Meteor, Sabre, Mirage and Hornet fighter aircraft. In the last 10 years the course has

expanded to include F-111, and now F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrew from 1 Squadron, Intelligence Officers and Air Battle Managers from the Surveillance and Control Training Unit (SACTU). FCI - History and ‘Dick’ Cresswell The FCI course has been conducted for more than 50 years. In 1954, Wing Commander Dick Cresswell established the FCI course in order to rectify deficiencies in air combat skills seen between the end of World War II and the Korean War. It was identified that without training pilots dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in all forms of air combat, the overall effectiveness of the force will rapidly decline and future Australian war fighting capability would be compromised. Dick Cresswell’s skill, courage and decisive leadership distinguished him as one of Australia’s great combat pilots and leaders in two wars. Such was his capability and leadership qualities that, astonishingly, at age 21, he was chosen in 1942 to form the RAAF’s now famed 77 Squadron. At the time the military situation for Australia was bleak. Japanese forces controlled South-east Asia and had attacked Pearl Harbour and Darwin. ‘Dick’ Cresswell, as a young, inexperienced and very junior Squadron Leader, was given the job of equipping and moving the squadron to Darwin. Operating from Darwin, Cresswell engaged, and destroyed, a Japanese ‘Betty Bomber’ during a night patrol in November 1943. This was the first enemy aircraft shot down in night combat over Australia by an Australian pilot. He also has the distinction of being the first Australian to lead fighter jet aircraft into battle, and the first Australian to fly faster than the speed of sound. Following a distinguished flying career during World War II, WGCDR Cresswell led 77 Squadron three times during the Korean War. His final command in Korea began in 1950 after Wing Commander Lou Spence was killed in action. Cresswell flew 144 combat sorties in Korea, as always, leading from the front. His influence on Australian air combat tactics is unsurpassed and enshrined in the Fighter Combat Instructors Course. Photo: Wing Commander ‘Dick’ Cresswell

Army fires up in Townsville The Australian Army has conducted a massive live fire training activity in the Townsville Field Training Area in preparation for Exercise Talisman Saber later in the year. The Combined Arms Training Activity involved land and air combat elements, with about 1500 mostly Townsville-based soldiers taking part along with armoured elements such as the Abrams Main Battle Tank and M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier. Air elements included the Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter and MRH90 Troop-lift Helicopter. The combined exercise is an important step in the 3rd Brigade’s progress toward achieving its battle ready group status for the Armyr. Main focus was on high end mid-intensity Foundation War Fighting with a number of Battle Group manoeuvre activities and Live Fire Exercises, including a brigade level live fire as the final activity. The scenario within the activity allowed for Battle Groups to move through two different missions with the second providing an opportunity for live fire.

The training scenario revolved around the fictional nation of Legais. The nation is under the control of a puppet regime propped up by the hostile fictional Pacific country of Kamaria, and the Australian Government and its allies are intervening militarily. Also taking part was Darwin’s Armoured Cavalry Regiment, temporarily relocated to Townsville as part of a trial that will eventually see all Australian Army Brigades restructured, with the armoured regiment joining the 3rd Brigade permanently. This is part of the Army’s Plan Beersheba. Providing air support were six Tiger helicopter from Darwin’s 1st Aviation Regiment. The training is regarded by the aviation regiment as the pinnacle of their training programme for the year leading up to Talisman Saber. PICTURESQUE FAMILY HOME MUST SELL

So you’ve found your dream home... What next? WITH GEOFF GILES, REALWAY PROPERTY CONSULTANTS

Buying a property can be a bit daunting, but if you get the right advice and are guided by the right people, this process can be fun and exciting. Assuming you have finally found “The One”, what are the next steps? Firstly, I would suggest you secure the property by entering into a Contract to purchase. Don’t be scared of this first stage as the current contracts (ninth edition) that most reputable agents use have been drawn up by the Queensland Law Society and REIQ and if completed properly, in most cases, are designed to protect the buyer. These contracts are drafted in simple English and very easy to read. Resist the temptation to just put a verbal offer forward. Good agents will suggest you complete a Contract (offer) on paper. We do this for many reasons, mainly to show all factors of the offer, price, deposits, settlement dates and any special conditions etc. It’s the only way to clearly communicate what you are offering and on what conditions, remember it’s not always about the money. Offers on paper also show that you are a genuine buyer.

Your agent will sit down and explain each part of the contract. Page 1 is basically about you, the seller and the property in question. Page 2 is a bit more detailed - it covers fixtures, inclusions and matters affecting the property. The price is also on this page as well as Finance Conditions and Building & Pest Conditions. This page is the page that you need to pay special attention to. Page 3 covers things like Safety Issues, e.g. pools, smoke alarms and safety switches. Page 4 is a little more complex. This lists any special conditions that either parties wish to include. The actual settlement date is also listed here. The remaining 8 pages are the terms of the contract which help explain the wording or interpretation of the contract. The main reason I tell all my buyers and sellers to put it on paper is, it’s factual and shows intent from both sides. Once it’s agreed and signed by both parties you have secured your new dream home. Then the fun really starts…

These industries are not to be trifled with: the services economy is larger than mining, contributing to around 70 per cent of our GDP and about 75 per cent of employment. With the Aussie dollar not so high, Australian manufacturers – many of whom operate at a quality and price premium compared to Asian competition – can find opportunities again where the high dollar is not a hindrance. There is an argument that the resources boom was actually a market distortion, and that a strong dollar and repressed manufacturing was the price to pay. Now that the resources boom is passing, perhaps the accompanying lower Aussie dollar is better for a much larger slice of the economy. Mark Bouris Executive Chairman Yellow Brick Road

I’ve been interested in the commentary about the Aussie dollar’s loss of value against the US dollar. At the start of May, one Australian dollar could buy $1.05 American; this week it was down to buying 0.93 American cents. The portents have all seemed grim, but what does the Australian dollar actually mean? For most readers this phase meant significant purchasing power when traveling overseas and very good terms from online American retailers. But life isn’t all about cheap holidays and cut-price video games. Our manufacturing sector suffered under a high dollar because it was cheaper for Australians to source goods overseas, while local companies found it hard to export because the exchange rate favourable to Australia made the goods expensive for the importing nations. Over the past two years we saw a ‘two speed’ economy, where resource exporters could thrive regardless of the high Aussie dollar because what they were exporting was in high demand, while local manufacturers went backwards. Our domestic energy consumption has flattened due in part to manufacturers operating at under-capacity or going out of business during this phase. Now that the Aussie dollar is buying less than one American dollar perhaps we should remind ourselves why it is not so bad for our local manufacturing, hospitality and tourism. With a weakening dollar, Australia looks like a reasonably-priced destination for international tourists and a place where Aussies will holiday rather than going overseas. This also gives the tourism ancillaries – cafes, pubs, restaurants and accommodation – a boost.

Hyundai Genesis and Veloster win awards The Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Veloster have topped the Aspirational Luxury Car and Sporty Car categories respectively in the 2013 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA). The study by the Southern California-based automotive research firm summarizes the results of responses from over 52,000 new vehicle owners. AutoPacific’s VSA awards objectively measure owner satisfaction, with 51 vehicle attributes covered, ranging from interior comfort and convenience to fuel economy and performance. “Winning AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Award confirms that the Hyundai Genesis has joined the big league,” said George Peterson, President, AutoPacific. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe features a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CWT), dual asymmetrical chrome exhaust tips, LED tail lights and a leatherwrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls. The Veloster has a unique three door design, and the turbo model features a 1.6 litre direct-injected twinscroll turbocharged engine, aggressive bodykit and 18-inch alloy wheels. “The AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are an important indicator

that Hyundai is continuing to hit the mark when it comes to pleasing consumers,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “We are pleased that both Genesis and Veloster owners rank their purchase decisions so highly – an excellent reflection on both of these class-leading vehicles.” The next-generation Genesis Coupe will be produced in right-hand-drive and Hyundai Motor Company Australia has confirmed that it will be sold in this market.

Nissan launches world’s fastest electric car Nissan has unveiled the ground-breaking, innovative ZEOD RC – the world’s fastest electric racing car that will reach speeds of more than 300km/h, with electric technology at the Le Mans 24 Hours. The ZEOD RC (Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car) will make its race debut at next year’s Le Mans 24 Hour. The car will compete under the ACO’s ‘Garage 56’ entry – an additional spot on the grid for vehicles that showcase new and innovative technology. While the car will not race until next year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, Nissan today kicked off a unique aspect of the program – race fans getting the chance to unveil the car in the public area of the Circuit de la Sarthe. Nissan intends to draw back the curtain for fans across the globe to provide continued updates via its international partnership with YouTube and its Nismo TV channel. Nissan launched the LEAF RC in 2011 – a race car prototype powered by the same 107-hp electric motor that is used in the road car. While current battery technology does not provide the energy storage capacity to race a solely electric Le Mans prototype, Nissan

ZEOD RC designer Ben Bowlby believes the development of the car will be an important step in the “electrification” of the racecars of the future. The Nissan ZEOD RC will make its testing debut later this summer. Nissan’s assault on the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hour will again target victory in the P2 class with 15 of the 22 entries powered by Nissan. In the opening rounds of the 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship, Nissan has dominated, taking victory at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps.

Toyota FJ Cruiser a huge hit Toyota’s ‘go anywhere, do anything’ FJ Cruiser has clocked up sales at more than twice the rate originally predicted for Australia. The sales tally has grown to almost 6,000 vehicles in just two years at an average of more than 220 a month compared with the original forecast of around 100 a month. Toyota’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the classic lines of the FJ Cruiser were crucial to its success - and also accounted for the initially conservative sales estimate. “We believed the modern FJ would find willing buyers in Australia because it is a rugged, dependable vehicle that can travel to, and return from, any extreme environment,” Mr Cramb said. “We wondered how today’s motorists would respond to the exterior features inspired by the original LandCruiser FJ40 produced between 1960 and 1984. “In fact, customers - and even people who choose to buy another vehicle - tell our dealers they love the FJ Cruiser precisely because it inherits the DNA of the original, paying homage to several of its most compelling stylistic themes.” Recent FJ Cruiser updates include a second fuel tank that more than doubles its fuel-load capacity to 159 litres. The 87-litre sub-tank to the 72-litre main tank improves its theoretical driving range to 1,067km (city) and more than 1,700km (highway). Off-road driving competence has been enhanced with CRAWL - a ‘feet-off’ control system that helps take the vehicle over severe or slippery terrain. It assists in climbing or descending steep hills, freeing the vehicle if it is stuck, and is helpful in mud, sand and gravel, and when fording water. CRAWL Control engages in L4 (low-range) and temporarily disengages at speeds above 25km/h, or above 10km/h when the rear differential is locked. A speed-selector dial on the overhead console provides the choice of five speeds. The system maintains a low uniform vehicle speed uphill and downhill by controlling both engine output and brake hydraulic pressure, allowing the driver to

concentrate on steering the vehicle. It increases vehicle stability in extreme four-wheel driving conditions by minimising wheel spin and tyre lock-up. For more information about all things Toyota, contact local dealer Llewellyn Toyota on 3282 2922.
