Kate’s Heading Singer Kate Miller Heidke is familiar with this part of the world.

back for 2016 Ipswich Life, your favourite magazine is back in 2016 for another year, as we celebrate our 27th year in business. As we always do with the first issue for the year, we tailor the magazine for all the Defence Families who are arriving in Ipswich to start their new posting, so here it is, our ‘Welcomes’ issue. Did you know that ADF families contribute over $1 billion to the Ipswich economy each year, so I urge everyone in Ipswich to embrace and welcome everyone involved at RAAF Amberley. Let’s all give a big welcome! In this issue we talk with Kate Miller-Heidke who is coming to Ipswich next month for the first time. It’s one concert you don’t want to miss, she is amazing! Remember IpswichLife is FREE for you thanks to our advertisers, so please show them your support, tell them you saw it in IpswichLife! Finally, after almost 6 years at the helm, this is my final issue as Editor of Ipswich Life. I’ve had a great time contributing to showing Ipswich in the positive light it deserves, and thanks to everyone for your support! Darren Hallesy - Editor

Growing up in Indooroopilly, the graduate of the Qld Conservatorium of Music continues to go from strength to strength with her critically acclaimed albums selling big numbers, including the last one ‘O Vertigo’ which broke all records when its production was funded by her fans in under 72 hours. But it is performing live where Kate has garnered her musical reputation around the world, and even she is surprised that it has taken her so long to get to the Ipswich Civic Centre. She hits the Ipswich stage for an all ages show on Friday February 12th which is selling fast. Leaving a major music label, Kate wanted to be an independent artist with more control of her work, so she went online as asked her fans to contribute through the ‘Pledge’ crowdfunding website. In return, Kate offered a range of rewards including phone calls on birthdays, signed CD’s, backstage passes, album credits and even a private gig in your own lounge room. The project set a new record for the funding of an album. “It was certainly not something I anticipated,

screened the ambitious project ‘The Divorce’, which screened during prime time, and its not often you get to see an operatic soap opera screen at such a time. Also starring Lisa McCune and Hugh Sheridan, it was something that Kate saw as a big challenge. “I’ve been working with Opera Australia for a couple of years and they brought ‘The Divorce’ to my attention. I’d been a fan of the composer for a long time and it appealed to me, along with the fact I’d have to stretch myself” Kate said. “I’ve never acted before, never mind do it on a TV show. It was a challenge that scared me a bit, but often the projects that scare you are the ones that have to be taken on! “It was a gutsy thing for the ABC to do putting it on at prime time, but people really responded to it, and hopefully it might be the start of something new.” Kate has performed with opera companies in the UK and the US, which allows her to take on new roles which capitalise on her musical training, and it is something she likes to do from time to time.

AWARDS SEASON BEGINS The first big awards show of 2016 is out of the way – The Golden Globes! It’s often used as a predictor for Oscar nominations – which is good for Leonardo DiCaprio who won the Best Actor Golden Globe for his latest movie The Revenant. Despite having an incredibly diverse cinematic career Leo has yet to win an Oscar, so fingers crossed this could be a good sign for him. The Revenant also won Best Drama. Other big winners on the night: Jennifer Lawrence Best Actress(Comedy) for Joy; Sylvester Stallone Best Supporting Actor for Creed; Kate Winslet Best Actress(Drama) for Steve Jobs; Matt Damon Best Actor(Comedy) The Martian (The Martian was a comedy?...I must have been watching a different movie!); and Inside Out Best Animated Feature.

as I suspected it would be successful but never as successful as it was,” Kate said from her new home in Melbourne. “I have people already asking me about when’s the next album, and I’m happy to say I’ve started writing it already and will work on it this year. “When I made some of the phone calls, a few people didn’t believe it was me, and some were in full swing at their birthday parties. It was so much fun to have so many conversations with all these people. One person told me he just named his prizewinning Heifer after me which was flattering! “It’s a very modern thing to have that level of access to your fans and vice versa and I’ve found it very rewarding. “It’s for better and for worse having that connection with fans through social media. There’s also something to be said for maintaining some distance and a bit of mystique about yourself. You want people to project things onto you and to read things into your music, so it’s a tightrope you walk at times.” Kate was on TV last month when ABC

Rumour is that Disney is trying to sign Emma Stone for an upcoming live action reboot of 101 Dalmations. Her role? The evil Cru

ella DeVille. Although, considering the movie is rumoured to be all about Cruella – maybe she won’t be all that evil. I mean, Maleficent ctually turned out to be pretty loveable in her flick! Perhaps the naughtiest Christmas movie of all time is finally getting a sequel – Bad Santa! And Christina Hendricks looks to have secured the leading lady role. Billy Bob Thornton is back as the drunken criminal, who in the first movie, spent his days working as a Santa so he could rob people. As if you thought Point Break was a one-off, 2016 is looking like its going to be reboot central. Robin Hood will be coming back to the big screen with an origin story, and it’s confirmed Jamie Foxx has landed the key role of Little John. Odd - but insiders are labelling the reboot as The Dark Knight trilogy in Sherwood Forrest. It looks like there’s a new Lady Gaga album

on the way in 2016! Gaga teased the album on the Golden Globes red carpet: ““I am putting out an album this year. I won’t tell you when, but it is coming out this year. Will it reflect my outer appearance … that’s a difficult thing to say as I don’t know that you yet know what I will look like for my next album,” she added. “I am still creating all those things. It is something that is a gradual change that is always with me.” Don’t feel bad about all those hours spent Snapchatting – Kate Hudson is doing it too. She said: “II’m new to Snapchat. It’s fun. Well… You’ve gotta like get into it for three weeks and then everyone’s like, ‘Kate, you’ve lost your mind. All you’re doing is in your phone.’ And then after that, you kind of get the hang of it and it’s really good. If you like telling stories, I think it’s really good,” See you next time! “I love being part of a company, for me it’s like being on a kind of holiday. I don’t need to take so much responsibility, and it’s not all on my shoulders like when I’m touring with my own music. I enjoy being a cog in a large machine. “I find that playing outside the capital cities keeps it interesting for me, not only seeing new places, and getting around, but the fans are much more energetic. It’s important to have all ages gigs like the one I’m doing in Ipswich. I’m not one of those musicians that appeals to one certain demographic. I find that at my shows there is a wide mix, like families with kids and often three generations of one family will come to a show,” Kate said. “This is my first time performing in Ipswich, and I can’t believe its taken me this long to get there. I grew up in Indooroopilly so I was always on the Ipswich line, and I have a lot of relatives in Ipswich. I’m looking forward to the show.” Kate Miller Heidke plays Ipswich Civic Centre in an All Ages concert on February 12th. Tickets at www.ipswichciviccentre.com.au

Free Family Fun on Australia Day

Whether you are new to Ipswich

What better way to celebrate Australia Day than to make a splash at one of Ipswich’s four Swim Centres on January 26. A Family Fun Day will be held at each centre from 10am-4pm on Tuesday, 26 January, with lucky door prizes and free entry for everyone. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the annual celebrations, which began as a community pool party in 1997, were always well supported. “Thousands of people gather at our Swim Centres for Australia Day, it’s a free day out and a great way to show your national pride with family and friends,” he said. Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson Councillor David Morrison said the day was a fitting way to recognise Ipswich’s multiculturalism. “We’ve got 115 cultural backgrounds represented in Ipswich and it’s always exciting to see people from all walks of life come together to celebrate Australia Day,” he said. “If you can’t make it to a Swim Centre we’ll also have Orion Lagoon open from 5am-9pm.” The Free Family Fun Days are at the following Swim Centre locations: • Bundamba Swim Centre, Brisbane Road, Bundamba. • Georgie Conway Leichhardt Community Swim Centre, Toongarra Road, Leichhardt. • Goodna Aquatic Centre, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna. • Rosewood Swim Centre, Mill Street, Rosewood. Family Fun Day is an alcohol and smoke free event, and glass will not be permitted.

Pet Care: Ipswich Vet Group or have lived here for years, one local business has been caring for the pets of the area for 49 years. for almost 50 years, and we take pride in the fact that your pets are cared for by local people in a local business.” Some of the services offered by the team include: • Vaccinations & Consultations • House calls • Desexing • Soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery • Microchipping • In-house laboratory • Digital X-ray and Ultrasound • ECG, Blood Pressure and Oxygen Saturation monitoring • Separate dog, cat and isolation wards • Puppy Preschool • Pet Weight Management Program • Grooming & Hydrobath • Senior Pet Program Large range of healthcare products including special foods, medicines, vitamins, leashes, treats and parasite/flea prevention. “Microchipping is one of the best inventions for pets I’ve seen in all my years as a vet,” Dr Render said. “We get lost pets handed in every day, and if they are microchipped we have a nearly 100% success rate of finding the owners! In almost all cases the pets have been picked up the same day. ‘Microchipping’ is when we inject a chip, smaller than a grain of rice, under the skin of your pet. That chip has

all your details on it, and if your pet is lost and then found by someone, all the information is there so you can be reunited. Microchipping your pet is very inexpensive, and in most cases its less than $50, but getting your pet back is priceless. “We recommend a pet check up at least annually. This enables us to check their health, weight, flea and worm prevention, plus of course vaccinations and Heartworm prevention status. Once your pet is in our system we can send reminders – via post or SMS - about treatments and upcoming examinations, giving you peace of mind that your pet’s health is being taken care of.” Booval Veterinary Hospital also carries a large range of foods to suit all pets, especially those with special dietary requirements. “We also have a big range of specialist health foods for your pet, from weight management and kidney-friendly foods, to foods that aid with urinary tract issues. We also carry a range of parasite preventions and treatments, plus treats, toys and accessories,” Dr Render said. “Vaccinations are a great example of prevention being better than cure. The cost of treatment for things like Flu in cats and Parvovirus in dogs can be very expensive, so regular health checks and vaccinations are a much cheaper option in the long term. “Flea and tick treatments, gut worming,

WELCOME TO SOUTH EAST QUEENSL AND | WELCOME TO SOUTH EAST QUEENSL AND |

Welcome to Australia’s Su

New arrivals at RAAF Base Amberley in 2016, and those returning after some time away, will notice that the base has grown substantially - in terms of the number of personnel employed there, the increased number of Defence units, and the results of a massive facilities modernisation programme over the past decade.

This rapid development of what will become the largest Defence base in Australia is set to continue with a record number of projects in the pipeline, costed at a staggering $1 billion to be spent over the next few years at Amberley. About 6000 Defence Force personnel, Defence civilian staff, and Defence contractor staff now work on what is essentially Defence Base Amberley these days, as an increasing number of Australia Army units are now resident on the base. Amberley is now in the Super Base class, and is now Australia’s largest air base. This number is expected to grow to about 7000 over the next three years. Air Combat Capability

At the ‘sharp end’, the base is now home to two squadrons of F/A-18F Super Hornets, to be joined in 2017 with 10 EA-18G ‘Growler’ Electronic Warfare aircraft to be allocated to No 6 Squadron, which currently flies the Super Hornet. These two squadrons of Super Hornets bring a formidable air combat capability, as demonstrated during the 2014 deployment to the Middle East. The combination of an enlarged Super Hornet squadron (No 1 Squadron) and the EA-18G Squadron (No 6 Squadron) takes Australia’s future air combat capability to a whole new level. Amberley is also home to the largest air transport squadron in the Australian Defence

Force, with 36 Squadron flying eight of the giant global airlifters, the C-17A Globemaster III. The C-17 is the most visible indication of Air Force presence, as it is often seen overhead Ipswich and surrounding areas on its way to places in Australia and overseas. Apart from its air support of Australian operations, the squadron is currently tasked to support Australian Defence Force operations in the Middle East. The C-17 has the ability to carry massive amounts of cargo and personnel so 36 Squadron is also tasks with a range of humanitarian assistance missions, including aeromedical evacuation. Adding to this air transport capability, the

uper Air Base

RAAF plans to relocate a squadron of 10 C-27J Spartan airlifters from RAAF Base Richmond in 2017. Enhancing the combat capability of the Australian Defence Force’s frontline aircraft is the KC-30A Multirole Tanker Transport operated by No 33 Squadron. The KC-30’s primary role is to air refuel combat aircraft such as the F/A-18F Super Hornet and F/A-18A ‘Classic’ Hornet but it also air refuels the E-7A ‘Wedgetail’ Airborne Electronic Surveillance & Control aircraft. The KC-30 can also carry cargo and personnel enabling a wide range of support tasks for ADF detachments, including current

air operations in the Middle East where the KC-30A provides air refuelling for RAAF and Coalition combat aircraft. Support Capability While RAAF Amberley is geared to support air operations there are a number of facilities and units that help to maintain, train and support the principal air power effort. An increasing Australian Army presence on-base is being realised, with units such as the 9th Force Support Battalion and 21st Construction Squadron making the base home, to be followed next year with relocation of 16th Construction Squadron to Amberley.

Combat support for air operations Not well known outside Air Force circles is a major Defence capability that has its headquarters at RAAF Amberley. Combat Support Group provides flying squadrons with world class air base support critical to the conduct of air operations in Australia and while deployed on missions overseas. CSG activates and secures air bases, enabling squadrons to operate in potentially hazardous combat-related roles knowing that the air base, wherever it may be in the world, can support the mission rate of effort. Commander CSG, Air Commodore Scott Winchester, says that supporting Australian Defence Force flying operations is “the reason we exist, quite frankly.” “We focus on three main areas. We provide Air Force’s expeditionary combat support capability, essentially our ability to set up an air base away from fixed air bases. Secondly, we manage our 14 fixed air bases around Australia, providing air base services for flying squadrons to generate and sustain air power. Thirdly, we provide the Air Force’s expeditionary health capability; being able to conduct aeromedical evacuations of military and also civilian personnel.” This is an important role for CSG, in partnership with the air mobility squadrons. “We can stabilise sick and wounded patients, put them on an aircraft and fly them out to safety, with medical treatment provided onboard the flight,” AIRCDRE Winchester said. “We can also set up on-location medical facilities ranging from a first aid section to a

mini-hospital with surgical capability.” The Combat Support solution is considered a world leader in supporting air combat operations. “I think it is world class. Shortly after CSG was formed 18 years ago we deployed to East Timor,” the Commander said. “We ran two airfields up there so we ‘cut our teeth’ as a group early on, and since then we have operated in the Middle East for more than a decade. In that time we’ve done bare base activations and provided a range of expeditionary combat support services - and that’s our core business. “We also need to keep pace with developments in air power and be ready to set up those expeditionary airbase services at a moment’s notice.” RAAF Amberley is one of the bases supported by CSG, and it is the largest air base in Australia. “The base currently has

about 5,800 personnel consisting of about 3,800 Air Force, about 800 Australian Army, a few hundred Defence civilians and, of note, about 1200 Defence contractor staff,” AIRCDRE Winchester said. “We are expecting that by the end of the decade there will be about 7000 personnel on-base, with new squadrons coming here including an additional Australian Army unit and an Air Force squadron, making Amberley Australia’s largest Defence base.” Commander CSG carries out duties as the senior Air Force officer in Queensland. “Defence maintains a close relationship with the City of Ipswich and the broader southeast Queensland community, and if there’s a senior leadership decision needed then I’m the one who makes that decision,” he said.

CSG’s 25 units spread across Australia and at Butterworth in Malaysia maintain a close relationship with the flying squadrons. “We plan for the major Defence activities and the normal on-base tasks that we call ‘raise, train and sustain’ activities, plus CSG-related training,” AIRCDRE Winchester said. “Our focus for the future is to maintain continuing capability in our three primary roles and to ensure that we keep pace with what we call our ‘5th Generation Air Force’, with the new and advanced aircraft and systems being introduced into service. “We are determined that our air base capabilities keep pace with our capabilities in the air, that our services are modernised, digitised and synchronised with the new combat air capabilities.”

WELCOME TO SOUTH EAST QUEENSL AND | WELCOME TO SOUTH EAST QUEENSL AND |

MAYOR’S WELCOME MESSAGE On behalf of all residents I extend a warm welcome to new arrivals at RAAF Base Amberley. The city of Ipswich is forging ahead with the current population of 190,000 expected to increase to 435,000 by 2031. Ipswich has much to offer new families and is rightly famous for many things, from a rich heritage to an extraordinary history of railway and mining, but none as important as our well known relationship with RAAF Base Amberley. The men and women who serve at RAAF Amberley are a part of Ipswich’s thriving community. We thank all defence personnel for their service and sacrifice. We encourage new arrivals to get to know their new home city and enjoy all the fantastic facilities Ipswich has to offer. Ipswich is a great location for families with so much to see and do. Our fabulous parks and recreation areas have first rate attractions such as the zero-depth water play area at River Heart Parklands, the free Ipswich Nature Centre in Queens Park and the world-class Orion Lagoon at Springfield Central. Our vibrant cultural heart means fine food and entertainment is never far away. Ipswich Art Gallery is one of the most visited regional galleries in Australia. Ipswich Civic Centre is also a great choice for entertainment with a variety of local, national and international shows. Council’s website www.ipswich.qld. gov.au and www.discoveripswich.com. au are great places to learn more about what’s on around the region. Welcome to the Ipswich family and we look forward to enjoying your company soon. Mayor Paul Pisasale

RAAF AMBERLEY - HISTO In December 1938, land located on the overflow floodplains at the confluence of the Warrill Creek and Bremer River The 880 acres known as ‘Jeebropilly’ by the First Australians, translates as ‘Swamp of the Flying Squirrels’. It comprised two land holdings: the north portion being part of the original pioneer family Collett’s property of ‘Amberley’ named after their county of origin in Sussex England, and the southern portion overlaying the banks of the Warrill Creek subdivision ‘Willow Bank’. Construction of RAAF Air Station Amberley commenced in 1939 and operations started in June 1940, with the formation of units to recruit and train RAAF aircrews to fly AVRO Anson and CAC Wirraway aircraft. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 the United States Army Air Corps quickly established an Air Echelon at RAAF Amberley and shipped in many fighter aircraft (Kittyhawks, Airacobra and Dauntlass) in kit form for assembly at Amberley to fly against Japanese forces in the Pacific War effort. Amberley developed into a significant

In 1960, the Australian ARMY established No 16 Light Aircraft Squadron at Amberley equipped with Bell ‘Sioux’ Helicopters and Cessna ‘Bird-dog’ observation aircraft. With the prolonged delay in the F-111 delivery, the RAAF leased F-4 ‘Phantom’ aircraft as an interim replacement for the ageing Canberra bombers, as F-111 aircrews who trained in the United States needed to remain current, waiting for the F-111 to arrive on-base. In December 1971, No 9 Squadron with Bell UH-1 ‚Iroquois‘ Helicopters was relocated to Amberley from service in the Vietnam War. Finally, in June 1973, the iconic swing-wing General Dynamics F-111C strike aircraft arrived at RAAF Amberley to serve with Nos 1 and 6 Squadrons, renowned for their long range strike/reconnaissance capability and publicly for their spectacular ‘Dump & Burn’ flypasts and air shows and other major events. Also in 1973, No 12 Squadron was reformed with Boeing CH-47 ‘Chinook’ Helicopters. Then in 1992 No 38 Squadron relocated to

30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft. In the interim years to 2009, Amberley’s air power capability actually decreased with the transfer of Black Hawk helicopters of No 9 Squadron and the Chinooks of No 12 Squadron to the Australian Army, and the disbandment of No 38 (Caribou) Squadron. A major transformation in Australian air power began in March 2009 with the arrival of the first five F/A-18F ‘Super Hornets’ to replace the aging F-111s, which were withdrawn from service in June 2011, after serving the RAAF for 38 years.

aircraft assembly, salvage and maintenance facility. In 1942, No 23 Squadron was relocated to Amberley and equipped with Vultee Vengeance and Bell P-39 Airacobra aircraft and dispatched to New Guinea area for bombing support duties. In 1944 the squadron reformed as a Heavy Bomber squadron with B-24 Liberator Bombers and deployed to provide bombing sorties in the South Pacific theatre. At the end of World War II, 82 Wing relocated to Amberley, later equipped with the Avro Lincoln bomber, which pre-empted its transformation in the post-war role as the RAAF’s major base for bombing operations. The jet age came to Amberley in 1954 with the arrival of the GAF ‘Canberra’ Bombers to replace the propellor powered Lincoln.

Amberley with its DH4 ‘Caribou’ cargo aircraft. The new century ushered in new era, with major base re-development, including facilities to accommodate the Australian Army’s 9 Field Support Battalion. Then in 2006, air transport capability came to Amberley with the Boeing C-17 ‘Globemaster’ cargo aircraft to serve with No 36 Squadron, followed in June 2008 with the relocation of No 33 Squadron to operate the new Airbus KC-

ORY was gazetted for Defence purpose. In retrospect, the first aircraft to land at Amberley in 1939 was a DH ‘Hornet Moth’ owned by the construction contractors. Seventy years later the biplane type has morphed into the ‘Super Hornet’ and RAAF Amberley has evolved into Australia’s major Defence base.

A MESSAGE FROM SHAYNE NEUMANN

Billion dollar expansion at RAAF Amberley By end-2016 a workforce of 1500 contractor staff will be working on infrastructure projects at the air base to accommodate and provide services for the rapid expansion of air power capability underway at RAAF Base Amberley. “This is one of our busiest years in terms of base development, with about 10 projects in the pipeline,” said Mr Matt Clarke, the Base Support Manager. “Over the next four years the projects planned total is just on one billion dollars.” One of the first projects to commence will provide construction of facilities for the Australian Army’s 17th Construction Squadron’s move to Amberley next year, with its 200 soldiers. “Another major project is to provide facilities for the squadron of ten C-27J Spartan aircraft, replacing the Caribou aircraft, bringing around 300 RAAF personnel onto the base, requiring similar facilities to those for the eight C-17s with 36 Squadron,” Mr Clarke said. With the number of C-17s on base increasing from the original four to six, and now eight, and the government deciding to buy an additional two KC-30s a new hangar and tarmac area needs to be constructed for 36

Squadron. Approval for this $220 million project is expected this year. Under a Flight Line Master Plan area a large parcel of land to the west of the runway will become tarmac space for heavy air lift aircraft types and facilities for 36 Squadron, creating a heavy air lift operations precinct parallel to the main runway. Existing squadrons flying the C-17 Globemaster, KC-30 Multirole Tanker Transport and F/A-18F Super Hornet will be joined in the future by the C-27J Tactical Airlift Squadron, the Growler EA-18G Electronic Warfare Squadron and the Heron UAV flight. For No 6 Squadron, with its 12 new EA-18G Growlers, new facilities equivalent to those of No 1 Squadron (Super Hornets) will be built. Space is also being reserved for any future new squadrons, such as any possible move to Amberley of other aircraft types. This realignment of the operational and support precincts will also involve road

diversions and relocation of some facilities close to the runway. Under a national project Amberley will get a new Air Traffic Control Tower and the existing Fire Station will be replaced. The new Air Traffic Control tower will be positioned on the eastern (Ipswich) side of the main runway. Under the 20-year plan the iconic Amberley ‘corner’ that has been a feature of the base for more than 75 years will go, and become part of the Air Base’s history, along with the aircraft types that have operated there. On the domestic front, a new multi-level carpark will be built to provide parking to service the operations precinct on-base. “Amberley is already Australia’s largest air base, and when these projects are completed it will be our largest Defence base,” Mr Clarke said. “Most projects will be completed by 2019, with small project elements continuing after that.”

It’s the location that for decades has been known for always grabbing a bargain, and at Tom’s Clearance Centre, you’re guaranteed of finding one, as thousands of people have for decades. For nearly thirty years, the shop at 60 East Street, Ipswich, Queensland, was the old R.T.Edwards Bargain Market, and former owner of the electrical giant, Tom Edwards, after selling the R.T.Edwards chain of stores decided in 2011 to open a bargain store under a new name. The store specialises in bedding, mattresses, shelving, dining settings, and more, along with ex-rental TV’s, fridges and freezers. “Its exactly the same as what we did for nearly thirty years,” said Gary Edwards, son of Ipswich’s best known retailer, Tom. “Bargain Market looked after tens of thousands of customers over the years, and we thought

that Ipswich still wanted to see a store with affordable furniture and heaps of bargains.” “We believe that there is a strong demand in Ipswich for what we are offering,” Gary said. “We have always been well supported in Ipswich, everyone knows that ‘Tom Edwards’ means ‘a bargain’ here in the west.” Manager Lindly is also open to the buying of second hand goods*, and would be keen to hear from anyone who has electrical goods or furniture to sell. Tom’s Clearance Centre is jam-packed with stock at bargain prices. The store is open 6 days a week. The bright yellow and black paintwork is definitely something you can’t miss but visit Tom’s Clearance Centre and you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see great bargains and good old fashion service! Welcome to booming Ipswich – the Defence logistics hub of South-East Queensland. For more than 60 years, Defence Health has been providing great value health insurance, specially tailored for the Defence community. Defence Health has always been not-for-profit and all for members. As a Members Own Health Fund, Defence Health delivers better service, has more satisfied members and gives more back in benefits. Many serving men and women around Australia have found Defence Health is the best option to cover their partner and children. They even have policies to cover ‘children only’ when both parents are serving. Defence Health CEO, retired Major General Gerard Fogarty says the fund has committed to a ten-year strategic plan to continue to enhance support for members of the ADF and wider Defence community. The strategy has already delivered a broader range of products and services tailored to the needs of serving families and their extended family. Because of your service, your mum and dad, brothers, sisters – and of course your own partner and children – can take advantage of the great value cover at Defence Health. With private hospital cover your family gets access to timely medical treatment, by a doctor of their choice. Extras cover helps fund the important general treatment – such as dental, physio and optical services – that Medicare does not rebate. Defence Health recently launched a dental network to give members with extras cover access to lower cost dental care. At a network dentist, Defence Health members will save at least 15% off the usual dental fee. Depending on the level of cover, Defence Health members also receive gap-free preventive treatment – such as an annual scale and clean – at a network dentist. Find a network dentist in Ipswich at defencehealth.com.au/dental The Defence Health ADF Total Package is firmly focused on families. Children can receive one free mouthguard, custom-fitted by a dentist, every year until they turn 21. And unlike other funds, there’s no lifetime limit on the benefits paid for orthodontic treatment. The premiums are very competitive too – with the added bonus of national pricing for ADF families. Plus there’s a 10% discount for 12 months for discharging personnel. It makes sense. Sportsco - understanding kids’ feet

Protecting Your Children’s Teeth

Children’s feet are highly vulnerable to injury as they continue development into their late teenage years, so it is important to be able to recognise a few more common lower limb aches and pains that can affect your child. Flat Feet Flexible flatfoot or a pronated foot is a condition usually caused by loose ligaments within the feet. Flat feet can cause aching feet or legs, especially during and/or after exercise. Other problems that can arise include poor balance’ poor coordination, tripping over’, bunions, heel and knee pain. Treatment with foot orthotics may be indicated if symptoms are occurring or if the flat foot is severe. Heel Pain/Severs Disease Severs disease is an injury to the growth plate of the heel bone where the Achilles tendon attaches, commonly affecting active children 10 to 14 years of age. What to look for? Your child may experience pain at the back of the heel bone. This is worse with exercise. Initially, it is best to reduce sports/activity & ice the painful area. Also check the fit of your child’s footwear. If pain persists, it is recommended to seek opinion with a Podiatrist. Knee Pain/Osgood Schlatters Osgood-Schlatters causes pain, tenderness and swelling just below the knee, and down the shin (tibia). It is more common in boys, overweight children and from overzealous activities such as running and jumping. The condition will usually present with tenderness and swelling below the knee.

LDG specialises in the very best protection – a custom-made mouthguard for the upper teeth – for just $85. Most health funds will even cover this cost. At LDG we have our very own dental laboratory with 2 dental technicians, something quite special these days. Frequent Ankle Sprains An ankle sprain occurs when there is a sudden twisting motion at the ankle during weight loading. This can overstretch or even break the ligaments resulting in pain, swelling, bruising and the inability to weight bear. If your child sprains or twists their ankle frequently, a Podiatrist is able to manage this through exercises and the use of orthoses. Growing Pains Growing pains are harmless muscle pain which can affect children from 3 years of age right through to adolescence. They often occur of an evening and affect either the calf muscles, thigh muscles or behind the knee. There are numerous causes including muscle tiredness and poor postural control. Growing pains can be infrequent and can be brought on by increased activity during the day. The pain is always gone by the morning. Growing pains do not affect the way a child walks or runs although lower limb biomechanics can be an attributing factor to the problem. Air Force KC-30A refuels USAF F-16 fighters

As part of the operational development of the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) a KC-30 from 36 Squadron conducted seven flights with US Air Force F-16s using the tanker’s 18‑metre-long Advanced Refuelling Boom System. While Australia does not operate the F-16, the jet is one of the most prolific combat aircraft in service in the world today, and would likely be involved in multinational coalition exercises and operations. Wing Commander Grant Kelly said the trials would yield a conditional clearance for the KC-

30A to refuel USAF F-16s. “Clearing the KC-30A to refuel the F-16 is a major milestone in enabling our aerial refuelling operators to refuel other boomcapable aircraft on combined operations and exercises,” he said. “There are a number of different F-16 variants

in service with the USAF and other foreign air forces which will require additional refuelling clearances.” Air-to-air refuelling is a ‘force multiplier’ in modern air operations, enhancing the range and payload of receiver aircraft. “The KC-30A recently refuelled the RAAF

+

E-7A Wedgetail on Operation Okra, and boom refuelling will gradually increase on Coalition Operations in the Middle East,” WGCDR Kelly said. The RAAF operates five KC-30A MRTTs, with two more joining the fleet from 2018.

After the Blast

By Garth Callender In 2004 Garth Callender, a junior cavalry officer, was deployed to Iraq. He quickly found his feet leading convoys of armoured vehicles through the streets of Baghdad and into the desert beyond. But one morning his crew was targeted in a roadside bomb attack. Garth became Australia’s first serious casualty in the war. After recovering from his injuries, Garth returned to Iraq in 2006 as second-in-command of the Australian Army’s security detachment in Baghdad. He found a city in the grip of a rising insurgency. His unit had to contend with missile attacks, suicide bombers and the death by misadventure of one of their own, Private Jake Kovco. Determined to prevent the kinds of bomb attacks that left him scarred, Garth volunteered once more in 2009. Revealing, moving, funny and full of drama. (Black Inc Books/Penguin) CODE WORD: ‘BLAST’

Hunter Killer:

Iside the lethal world of drone warfare By Lt Col T. Mark McCurley Remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), are a mysterious and headline-making tool in the military’s arsenal. Previously, their story has been pieced together by technology reporters, major newspapers, and on-theground accounts from the Middle East, but it has never been fully told by an insider. Mark McCurley provides an unprecedented look at the aviators and aircraft that forever changed modern warfare. This is the first account by an RPA pilot, told from his unique-in-history vantage point supporting and executing Tier One counterterrorism missions. Only a handful of people know what it’s like to hunt terrorists from the sky, watching through electronic eyes of an aircraft. (Allen & Unwin) CODE WORD: ‘HUNTER’

When old friends Jack and Tom volunteer for the army medical corps, both men are unaware that their lives are about to change forever. Honour, Duty, Courage is the culmination of Mohamed Khadra’s countless interviews with doctors and nurses who have served in the Australian military. This plant produces Dreamfoam, which is superior in feel, comfort and consistency while being much gentler on you and the environment to than standard foam. The Turner’s are proud that their commitment to the local production

of our beds has created over 1200 jobs across Australasia. This ensures they have full control over the quality of manufacture and the materials used – which must be of the highest grade to meet our stringent quality standards. They use locally sourced components in the products they manufacture, which proudly carry the Australian-Made credential. Their bedding products are constructed using Australian-made steel springs and mattress fabric and are designed and built to the highest quality standards unsurpassed anywhere in the world. In Australia, Sleepyhead has a specially designed and purpose-built 9,000 square metre factory complex in Brisbane and 4,500 square metre complexes in Melbourne and Perth. There are also factories in Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth. This enables their commitment to using the latest technology to continually improve manufacturing methods; which in turn provides customers with superior locally made products. All sites feature computerized automated production lines. As a world-first the Sleepyhead Brisbane factory features a worldfirst fully computerized Eton automated fabrichandling system, exclusively developed for use in the mattress industry by our engineers. This Eton system has also been implemented in the Sydney and Melbourne factories and it dramatically increases efficiencies throughout the factories and ensures we can better serve our customers. No matter which one of our beds you choose, because it bears the Sleepyhead name you’ll know it has been built with lasting quality. Graeme, Craig and the Turner’s before them guarantee it.

Feels like home at Honeywood Fernvale! More than 300 families now call the Honeywood Estate home and it is easy to see why. The Honeywood estate features large traditional sized blocks with peaceful views of the mountain ranges and surrounding rural landscapes. Set in the beautiful Brisbane Valley township of Fernvale you will never want to leave with number of shopping outlets and a vibrant café scene with Brisbane and Ipswich only a short distance away.
Honeywood is one of the rare modern estates that offers traditional sized (600m2 plus) building blocks enabling families to grow and accommodate other things on the property such as sheds, pools and the like. Most blocks also have beautiful scenic views of the mountain ranges and surrounding countryside.
“Buyers at Honeywood do not want to settle for a small block and they don’t need to. Honeywood has large traditional blocks with big back yards on offer while being close to all the benefits of an established community. Honeywood is on the doorstep of a new shopping precinct and centre of town. With its picturesque surroundings and views you almost can’t believe you are only 20 minutes from Ipswich CBD and the Amberley Air Base. Why settle for a small block,” said Honeywood Estate Manager Jarod Herden.

Honeywood’s latest release features only 28 elevated homesites with stunning mountain views and rural vistas that are now ready to build on. This boutique stage is already over 50 per cent sold with the remaining blocks ranging in size from 600 to 829sqm. “One of the most popular attributes of the estate are its elevated natural contours providing most blocks with unique views without the maintenance requirements of acreage lots,” said Mr Herden. The Honeywood estate has always been affordable and continues to be with homesites from a low $139,000, and with help from some of Queensland’s leading builders, there are a number of house and land packages available to suit all buyers starting from only $295,000.
“I’m unaware of any other residential estates in South East Queensland that can offer a new 4 bedroom, 2 bathrooms and 2 car garage home on a 600sqm block for that kind of value,” said Mr Herden. You can find out more about Honeywood at Fernvale by visiting the sales and information centre in the heart of Fernvale located along the Brisbane Valley Highway, or contact the sales office on 5427 0511.
