Junior Grammar hits high note at Eisteddfods

News

Junior Grammar enjoyed an enormous amount of success at this year’s Ipswich Eisteddfod and brought home a swag of accolades. Awards included First Places for Junior Grammar Choir and Junior Grammar Strings Ensemble and Highly Commended for our Junior Grammar Wind Ensemble. Many of our solo musicians also took out awards in the hotly contested performing arts competition like solo violinist Irene Jung, who won a number of First Place awards including Junior Instrumental Aggregate Award, Instrumental Solo Championship (12 years and under) and Instrumental Solo Championships (12 years and under). A few weeks later, Junior Grammar Dance Troupe (pictured, right) took out Highly Commended and a Very Highly Commended at the Ipswich Junior Dance Eisteddfod!

Mixed teams at Friendly During Semester 1 we had a sporting first at Junior Grammar with our inaugural competitive soccer match with mixed teams. Our boys and girls travelled by bus to Dunlop Park, Corinda to compete against Corinda State School. Led by our School Sports Captains, Ella Gover and Marcellus Orford-Koeman, Junior Grammar went into the sporting event with three teams of 40 girls and boys ranging from Year 2 to Year 6. Our students, many of whom had never played soccer beyond a casual game at lunch, played well and displayed remarkable teamwork. Unfortunately, we didn’t bring home any wins but our boys and girls represented the School with pride, first-class sportsmanship and a profound sense of fun!

Mandarin now taught from Prep This year Junior Grammar introduced the opportunity for all Prep to Year 4 boys and girls to study Chinese (Mandarin). “Learning a language is an excellent opportunity for children to broaden their view of the world and to understand Australia’s place in the world, as well as the many different cultures living in our country,” said Head of Junior Grammar Mrs Nicolee Eiby. Our Chinese program, taught by Mrs Takahashi-Chen, focuses on building understanding and learning to speak, read, write, listen and think in another way. @GRAMMAR | ISSUE 13 | WINTER 2017 | 21.
