POWDER COATINGS FOR ANTICORROSION

WHAT ROLE FOR THE POWDER COATINGS IN THE ANTI-CORROSION FIELD? Le vernici in polvere nel settore dell’anticorrosione: quale ruolo?
T
he sector of the anti-corrosion coatings is complex and multifaceted and characterised by such application methods and quality requirements that the painting products dedicated to it have little or nothing in common with the unspecific industrial paints, be they liquid – solvent- or water-based – or powder. The size and shape of the parts to be coated limit the possibility of applying the anti-corrosion coatings on automatic systems and of carrying out a mass production, as it happens in the general industry; even the uses of these products – in aggressive environments with highly corrosive atmospheres, underground and underwater sites or areas highly exposed to the effects of weathering – make the unspecific industrial paints ineffective, requiring high performance coatings with ad hoc formulations to ensure maximum protection and minimum deterioration of the metal, which increases the time of maintenance, touch-ups and repairs. The anti-corrosion coatings are often applied on site, despite all the limitations of the case, or on objects that – due to their shape and size, as already mentioned – cannot be polymerised in an oven or with the currently available technologies. All these aspects limit or exclude the possibility of using the traditional industrial paints, including the powder coatings, although they combine an excellent corrosion protection of the metal to an aesthetically appealing look. That said, we should remember that anti-corrosion is not synonymous only with security in the fields of off-shore structures, heavy chemical industry, pipelines to transport oil and gas, shipbuilding industry, storage tanks for chemicals, and so on; anti-corrosion also means protection against corrosion of components of civil and industrial infrastructure in iron and steel, street furniture, industrial, agricultural and earth-moving machinery, chassis and bodywork of cars, commercial and transport vehicles and, generally, of all those objects which require corrosion protection and, at the same time, can be coated in industrial plants. In all these fields it is possible to achieve an effective protection against the premature aesthetic and structural decay of the metal due to corrosion by applying the new generation of anti-corrosion powder coatings – primers or two-coat systems – developed and launched on the market in recent months. In general, the features that unite these products – of which we offer an overview in the following pages – are the lack of heavy metals in the formulation, which makes them safe for the environment and the human health, the good anticorrosion performance even in the higher corrosivity classes (C4, C5-I and C5-M) according to the standard ISO 12944, the ease of application, the broad range of uses.

uello dei rivestimenti anticorrosivi è un settore complesso e multiforme che presenta delle peculiarità applicative e dei requisiti qualitativi tali per cui i prodotti vernicianti ad esso dedicati hanno nulla o poco in comune con le vernici industriali generiche, siano esse liquide – a solvente o all’acqua – o in polvere. Dimensioni e forma dei manufatti rivestiti limitano le possibilità di applicare i rivestimenti anticorrosivi su impianti automatici ed effettuare produzioni in serie, come invece accade nell’industria generica; le destinazioni d’uso di questi stessi manufatti – ambienti aggressivi con atmosfere altamente corrosive, luoghi interrati o sottomarini, aree altamente esposte all’effetto di agenti atmosferici – rendono inefficaci le vernici industriali generiche richiedendo rivestimenti altamente performanti, con formulazioni ad hoc per garantire massima protezione e minimo deterioramento del metallo, allungando così i tempi di manutenzione, i ritocchi e i rifacimenti. L’applicazione dei rivestimenti anticorrosivi avviene spesso in cantiere, pur con tutte le limitazioni del caso, oppure su manufatti che – come già accennato, per forma e dimensione – non possono essere polimerizzati in un forno o con le tecnologie attualmente disponibili. Tutti questi aspetti limitano o escludono la possibilità di utilizzare vernici industriali tradizionali fra cui le vernici in polvere, che pur abbinano un’ottima protezione anticorrosiva del metallo ad un aspetto estetico accattivante. Detto questo, è doveroso ricordare che anticorrosione non è sinonimo solo di protezione nel campo di strutture off-shore, industria chimica pesante, tubazioni per il trasporto di gas e petrolio, industria navale, serbatoi di contenimento di sostanze chimiche, e così via; anticorrosione significa anche proteggere dalla corrosione componenti di infrastrutture civili e industriali in ferro e acciaio, arredo urbano, macchinari industriali, agricoli e movimento terra; telai e scocche di automobili, veicoli commerciali e da trasporto e in generale quei manufatti che necessitano di protezione anticorrosiva ma che allo stesso tempo rientrano fra quei manufatti che è possibile verniciare su impianti industriali. In tutti questi settori è possibile ottenere un’efficace protezione dal prematuro decadimento estetico e strutturale del metallo per gli effetti della corrosione, applicando la nuova generazione di vernici in polvere anticorrosive primer o sistemi a due mani - che i produttori hanno messo a punto e lanciato sul mercato in questi ultimi mesi. La caratteristica che accomuna questi prodotti – di cui vi offriamo una panoramica nelle prossime pagine – è generalmente l’assenza metalli pesanti nella formulazione, il che li rende sicuri per l’ambiente e per la salute umana, le buone prestazioni anticorrosive anche nelle classi di corrosività più alte (C4, C5-I e C5-M) secondo la normativa ISO 12944, facilità di applicazione, ampio spettro di utilizzo.
