T
he decay of metals due to their exposure to the environment – corrosion – is one of the issues of concern to the man since the dawn of industrial civilisation. Corrosion entails the need for protecting goods against it from the beginning of their service life; the importance of planning proper management (and therefore maintenance costs) to restore their initial conditions over their life span; and the risk of huge loss of money and of safety problems that can lead to more or less serious consequences for man and environment, if the first two tasks are not carried out properly. The tendency is to use increasingly specific coatings for the objects to be protected, as a function of their nature (substrate; production, transportation and installation method), context of use (outdoors, underwater or underground, in contact with acids…) and future maintenance conditions. In other words, super-specialised coatings, perfectly tailored on the product, with raw materials and formulations developed by the applicator of the coating, because it is the applicator that deals with the specifications of the end customer, with the installation and quality requirements, and especially with the cost parameter. This is the key role that markedly differentiates between the applicator of anti-corrosive coatings and the job coater who operates in the general industry and who, working on large production series, does not have the need to fine-tune its treatments from time to time, if not in terms of aesthetics. On this issue of ipcm_Protective Coatings, you will find the articles of two applicators that, out of vocation and due to their industrial history, face requests for high performance coatings every day and make use of laboratories and internal research centres for developing products based on the functional requirements of the object to be treated. These companies do not provide a service; they do not provide labour, as it would be easy to think. They supply a product, and that product is the most suitable coating to protect the object on which it will be used. In Italy, it is Aniarp – National Association of Coating Application Companies – that defends the interests of this category of super-specialised companies, with skills and professionalism with few equals in the world, through wide-ranging and high cultural value initiatives, such as the convention on the use of COR-TEN® steel for infrastructure of which you will find a comprehensive report in the next pages.

l decadimento dei metalli a causa della loro esposizione all’ambiente – la corrosione – è una della questioni che preoccupa l’uomo sin dagli albori della civiltà industriale. Corrosione significa produrre i beni proteggendoli da essa fin dall’inizio della loro vita utile; pianificarne una corretta gestione nel tempo (quindi costi di manutenzione) per ripristinare le loro condizioni iniziali nell’arco della loro vita; infine, confrontarsi con ingenti perdite di denaro e con l’insorgere di problemi di sicurezza, che possono portare a conseguenze più o meno gravi per uomo e ambiente, se le prime due attività non vengono svolte correttamente. La tendenza è quella di promuovere rivestimenti sempre più specifici per il bene da preservare, in relazione alla sua natura (substrato, metodologia produttiva, di trasporto e installazione), al suo contesto finale d’uso (all’aperto, immerso in acqua o sottoterra, a contatto con acidi…) e alle future condizioni operative di manutenzione. Ciò significa rivestimenti super-specializzati, calibrati alla perfezione sul manufatto, che utilizzano materie prime e formulazioni messe a punto dall’applicatore del rivestimento. Perché è l’applicatore che si confronta con le specifiche del cliente finale, con i requisiti di installazione, con le richieste qualitative e soprattutto con la variabile dei costi. È questo ruolo chiave che differenzia nettamente l’applicatore di rivestimenti anticorrosivi dal verniciatore conto terzi che opera nella general industry e che, lavorando su grandi serie produttive, non ha la necessità di calibrare di volta in volta i propri trattamenti, se non per l’effetto estetico. Su questo numero di ipcm_Protective Coatings vi sono gli interventi di due applicatori che per vocazione e storia industriale affrontano ogni giorno richieste di rivestimenti ad alte prestazioni e che si avvalgono di laboratori e strutture di ricerca interne per la messe a punto del rivestimento in base ai requisiti funzionali del manufatto da trattare. Sono aziende che non forniscono un servizio, che non prestano manodopera, come sarebbe facile pensare di un terzista, bensì un prodotto: e quel prodotto è il rivestimento più adatto a preservare il manufatto che si apprestano a trattare. In Italia è l’Aniarp – Associazione Nazionale Applicatori Rivestimenti Anticorrosivi – che difende gli interessi di questa categoria di aziende super-specializzate, che vantano competenze e professionalità con pochi eguali a livello internazionale, attraverso iniziative (come quella del convegno sull’impiego del Cor-Ten® per le infrastrutture, di cui trovate un ampio resoconto sulle prossime pagine) di ampio respiro ed elevato valore culturale.
