ometimes it’s just scribbles, sometimes it’s fullsize murals in all the colours of the rainbow: graffiti. Some of the sprayers engaging in this mischief are tempted because it’s forbidden, others do it to gain kudos from their peers. Not everyone is impressed, however. Graffiti causes immense damage to cities, communities and homeowners. Removing the aggressive spray paints is extremely costly, damages the building fabric and can cause the entire property to drop in value. Homeowners can now relax: WACKER has developed a new, highly effective antigraffiti product, which permanently protects surfaces with a thin film of silicone. Graffiti and stickers can be readily washed off with just cold water.

Graffiti paints penetrate deeply into building fabric

It’s a scenario replicated in cities all around the world: under cover of darkness, a graffiti artist whips out a spray can and gets to work. The pitch-black paint etches its way mercilessly into the masonry. The fine pores of the sandstone soak up the acrylic paint like a sponge. After a few minutes, the culprit has disappeared – leaving a personal memorial on what was once an immaculate natural stone wall. “In porous masonry, the paint can penetrate down to a depth of about one millimetre,” says Prof. Helmut Weber, founder of the Competence Center for Building Protection and Renovation in Ebersberg near Munich, Germany. “It literally clings to rough sandstone surfaces and is highly tenacious,” notes the construction expert. A great deal of water, special chemicals and a high-pressure cleaner are needed to remove the graffiti. Even so, the outlines of the inscriptions can often still be seen afterwards. The only remedy in such cases is to resort to sandblasting. “But that, of course, strips away the building fabric”, says Weber. “If you do that after every graffiti attack, the building itself will eventually suffer.”

La vernice nera come la pece incide senza pietà la muratura. I sottili pori dell’arenaria assorbono la vernice acrilica come una spugna. Dopo pochi minuti il colpevole scompare - lasciando una memoria personale su quello che era un immacolato muro in pietra naturale. “Nella muratura porosa la pittura può penetrare fino a una profondità di circa un millimetro”, spiega il prof. Helmut Weber, fondatore della KBB GmbH (Centro di competenza per la protezione delle opere edilizie e il risanamento edilizio) di Ebersberg, vicino a Monaco, in Germania. “Si aggrappa letteralmente alle rugose superfici in arenaria ed è estremamente difficile da eliminare”, sottolinea l’esperto di edilizia. Per rimuovere i graffiti sono necessarie grandi quantità di acqua, prodotti chimici speciali e idropulitrici ad alta pressione. E nonostante ciò, i contorni delle iscrizioni possono rimanere successivamente visibili. L’unico rimedio in questi casi è ricorrere alla sabbiatura. “Ma questo, ovviamente, strappa via il tessuto dell’edificio”, afferma Weber. “Se si fa questo dopo ogni attacco con i graffiti l’edificio stesso finirà per soffrirne”.

volte sono solo scarabocchi, a volte grandi murales con tutti i colori dell’arcobaleno: sono i graffiti. Alcuni di questi “artisti” sono invogliati a farlo perché è proibito, altri per ottenere gloria tra i coetanei. Tuttavia, non tutti ne sono entusiasti, anzi, i graffiti causano danni immensi a città, comunità e proprietari di case. Rimuovere le aggressive pitture spray è estremamente costoso, danneggia la struttura dell’edificio e causa la svalutazione dell’intero bene. I proprietari delle abitazioni possono ora tirare un sospiro di sollievo: WACKER ha sviluppato un nuovo prodotto anti-graffiti altamente efficiente, che protegge le superfici in modo permanente con un sottile film di silicone. Graffiti e adesivi potranno essere prontamente lavati via solo con acqua fredda.
