A

lthough protecting onshore assets against corrosion can be difficult, doing the same on offshore structures is a real challenge, which can cost up to fifteen times more than maintenance at the factory. Lashed by the waves, attacked by winds, and colonised by microorganisms, offshore platforms and wind farms, boats, and underground pipelines struggle with corrosion problems every day. Maintenance and restoring are daily activities, as well as the only way to preserve these structures from failures and inefficiencies and to guarantee their operational safety.

The technology offered to counteract the effects of offshore and marine corrosion is increasingly evolved. This issue of ipcm®_Protective Coatings, to be distributed at the trade fairs SMM and WindEnergy in Hamburg, Euronaval in Paris, Eurocorr in Krakow, and ONS in Stavanger, presents a special report about offshore and marine coatings and their main innovations: new coatings with dynamic properties of surface regeneration; systems applicable by roller or brush with the same service life expectancy of airless-applied high quality products, but requiring halved maintenance times; UV diodes integrated in anti-fouling paints to remove scales from hulls; and graphene-based additives that extend the service life of coatings up to five times.

Asset owners no longer just look for advanced technologies: two Unique Selling Points (USP) can help win a supply contract.

The first one is the offer of a complete support in the management of maintenance operations: asset status assessment, order management, staff training, quality tests, performance monitoring, and budget optimisation are just some of the services offered by big multinational manufacturers of protective coatings to their customers.

The second USP is sustainability, understood as emission reduction and operational performance improvement aimed at increasing energy savings and lowering the environmental impact of formulations.

Defined as a practice that «meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs», sustainability is an issue of great relevance and interest for everyone. This issue of ipcm®_Protective Coatings inaugurates a new section on sustainability, to be included in all ipcm® magazines.

Already widely discussed on our website www.myipcm.com and on our social channels (as I write this, the MyIpcm Coatings Community on LinkedIn has 8452 members), this topic will be dealt with in an even more organic and in-depth way on our publications. The brand new section will collect exclusive interviews, comparisons, projects, and activities devoted to environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

e proteggere dalla corrosione gli asset posizionati sulla terraferma è un brutto affare, farlo su strutture che operano in ambiente marino è una vera sfida e può costare fino a 15 volte in più rispetto alla manutenzione in cantiere.

Sferzati dalle onde, aggrediti dai venti e colonizzati dai microorganismi, le piattaforme e i parchi eolici offshore, le imbarcazioni e le condotte sommerse sono ogni giorno alla prese con i problemi legati alla corrosione: manutenzione e rispristino sono attività quotidiane, l’unico modo per preservare le strutture da cedimenti e inefficienze e per garantirne la sicurezza operativa.

La tecnologia offerta per contrastare gli effetti della corrosione offshore e marina è sempre più evoluta. Questa edizione di ipcm®_Protective Coatings, che sarà distribuita alle fiere SMM e WindEnergy di Amburgo, Euronaval di Parigi, Eurocorr di Cracovia e ONS di Stavanger, con il suo speciale sui rivestimenti offshore&marine, ne presenta alcuna delle più importanti: rivestimenti innovativi che includono proprietà dinamiche di rigenerazione della superficie; sistemi applicabili a rullo o pennello che garantiscono le stesse aspettative di vita di sistemi di altissima qualità per applicazione airless e dimezzano i tempi di manutenzione; diodi UV incorporati nelle pitture antivegetative per eliminare le incrostazioni dagli scafi; additivi a base di grafene che estendono fino a 5 volte la vita utile di un rivestimento.

Il primo è l’offerta di un supporto a 360° nella gestione delle operazioni di manutenzione: valutazione dello stato dell’asset, gestione degli ordini, training del personale, prove di qualità, monitoraggio delle prestazioni, ottimizzazione dei budget sono solo alcuni dei servizi sempre più offerti dalle grandi multinazionali che producono rivestimenti protettivi ai propri clienti.

Il secondo USP è la sostenibilità, intesa come riduzione delle emissioni, miglioramento delle prestazioni operative in ottica di risparmio energetico e minor impatto ambientale delle formulazioni.

Definita come pratica per assicurare «il soddisfacimento dei bisogni della generazione presente senza compromettere la possibilità delle generazioni future di realizzare i propri», la sostenibilità rappresenta un argomento di grande attualità e interesse per tutti.

Da questa edizione ipcm®_Protective Coatings inaugura una nuova sezione sulla sostenibilità, che sarà poi estesa a tutte le riviste della galassia di ipcm®.

nderground steel pipelines for the transport gas, oil, petroleum products, minerals, and water can present serious problems due to the occurrence of corrosion and of electrical and electromagnetic interferences.

They often run for hundreds of kilometres through cities, villages, streams, rivers, plantations, roads, roadways, hills, valleys, high voltage electric transmission lines, and electrified railway lines.

viarie elettrificate, e hanno bisogno di essere adeguatamente protette dalla corrosione, dalle interferenze elettriche e dai disturbi elettromagnetici, così da evitare fuoriuscite e incidenti, che possono causare problemi seri alle persone e all’ambiente (fig. 1).

Allo scopo di garantire l’integrità di queste tubazioni, in modo che possano operare in totale sicurezza nel corso degli anni, le imprese proprietarie devono proteggerle adeguatamente da forature e difetti, un’operazione che richiede competenza, responsabilità e impegno nei confronti della società.

Gli ingegneri responsabili di questo lavoro devono essere consapevoli di una serie di precauzioni importanti che è necessario adottare durante la progettazione, la costruzione e la messa in esercizio di queste tubazioni.

Durante la fase di progettazione, le precauzioni più importanti riguardano le misurazioni delle resistività elettriche del terreno lungo la condotta, gli studi degli attraversamenti, affiancamenti e avvicinamenti alle reti ferroviarie elettrificate e alle linee di trasmissione elettrica ad alta tensione, oltre al rilevamento del campo necessario per il progetto di protezione catodica.

Therefore, they need to be adequately protected against corrosion, electrical interference, and electromagnetic disturbances in order to avoid any spill or accident that may cause serious problems to people and the environment (Fig. 1).

In order to guarantee the integrity of these pipes and let them safely operate over the years, their owning companies must protect them and prevent the formation of holes and defects – an operation that requires competence, responsibility, and commitment to society.

The engineers entrusted with this task should be aware of a number of important measures that must be adopted during the design, construction, and commissioning of these pipes. As for the design phase, the most important precautions concern the measurement of the electrical resistances of the ground along the pipeline, the analysis of the crossed or nearby electrified railway networks and high voltage electric transmission lines, and the detection of the field required for the cathodic protection system. resistivity value is very important because the lower the figure, the greater the corrosion aggressiveness. Measuring the electrical resistivity of the ground along the pipeline is always vital to assess the potential corrosion problems and the size of the most appropriate protection system.

Indeed, the right coating specifications and the proper size of the cathodic protection system must be identified.

Electrified railways, subways, and structures operating with direct current are extremely harmful for underground pipelines, which may be subject to electrolytic corrosion and be severely corroded in a short time, if the correct protection measures have not been adopted in advance. High voltage power lines can cause electromagnetic interference in underground steel pipes and they must be analysed very carefully. In addition to the possible corrosion problems, they also entail serious safety problems for anyone intervening on the pipeline or moving in its proximity.

La conoscenza della resistività elettrica è molto importante dal momento che più basso sarà il suo valore, maggiore sarà l’aggressività della corrosione. Dobbiamo conoscere sempre il profilo di resistività elettrica del terreno lungo la condotta per essere in grado di valutare i problemi di corrosione e dimensionare correttamente il sistema di protezione più adeguato per ogni situazione, che passa attraverso la specifica corretta del rivestimento delle tubature ed il dimensionamento adeguato del sistema di protezione catodica da utilizzare.

Ferrovie elettrificate, metropolitane e installazioni che funzionano in corrente continua sono estremamente dannose per le condotte interrate, che possono trovarsi soggette alla corrosione elettrolitica e venire gravemente corrose in breve tempo, nel caso in cui non siano state adottate in anticipo le corrette misure di protezione.

Le linee elettriche ad alta tensione possono causare interferenze elettromagnetiche nelle tubazioni di acciaio interrate e devono essere studiate con molta attenzione. Oltre ad eventuali problemi di corrosione, queste li-

During construction of the pipeline, on the other hand, the necessary precautions are the application of a highly efficient anti-corrosion coating and the installation of an adequate cathodic protection system, able to guarantee its integrity over the years. In this framework, the pipes are coated in the factory and sent to the construction site to be welded together. The welds between the pipes are areas subject to high corrosion rates due to the welding process itself. Therefore, they must be lined on site with “Canusa�-type heat shrinkable bands, offering excellent mechanical and corrosion protection.

In many cases, the pipeline is built with the directional drilling technology: it is literally pulled through a hole, with the advantage of not having to create open-air channels or dugouts. This technique, very widespread in the construction of underground pipes, calls however for maximum carefulness, since the pulling operation can damage the external

Le saldature tra le tubazioni, zone soggette a forte corrosione a causa del processo di saldatura, devono essere rivestite in loco con fasce termorestringenti del tipo “Canusa�, che offrono un’eccellente protezione meccanica ed anticorrosiva.

In molti casi la condotta è costruita adottando la tecnologia della perforazione direzionale, con cui la tubazione è letteralmente tirata attraverso un foro, con il vantaggio di non dover aprire canali o trincee a cielo aperto. Questa attività , molto diffusa nella costruzione delle tubazioni interrate, deve essere svolta con atten-

coating of the pipes and compromise its anticorrosion properties (Fig. 2).

During and after construction, the coating must be carefully inspected with specially developed techniques, with the aim of avoiding and correcting any defects that occur commonly (Fig. 3). In order to integrate the protective action of the anti-corrosion coating, a cathodic protection system must be installed. This gently reinforces the underground pipes, thus eliminating any corrosion stacks and enabling the pipeline to operate in complete safety.

During construction and while the cathodic protection system is not operating, the underground pipeline must be temporarily protected. This operation needs to be performed by trained personnel equipped with the appropriate tools and devices to permanently measure the pipe/ ground potential and keep the piping reinforced, from the laying of the first tube to the end of the construction phase 4 (Fig. 4).

After construction, finally, the pipelines must be checked frequently, so that the cathodic protection system is kept functioning efficiently: this is the only measure that can guarantee their integrity and operational security. Such operation consists in periodically measuring the potentials of the pipes in relation to the ground (pipe/ ground potentials) and keeping the cathodic protection rectifiers functioning properly. These measurements must be made during the operation of the pipeline for its entire service life, because there is no other way to know whether the pipes are intact and protected against corrosion or not (Fig. 5).

The monitoring operations of the external and internal corrosion of pipelines must also

Durante e dopo la costruzione, il rivestimento deve essere accuratamente ispezionato con l’utilizzo di tecniche sviluppate appositamente per queste situazioni, con l’obiettivo di evitare e correggere eventuali difetti, che si verificano comunemente (fig. 3).

Per completare l’azione protettiva del rivestimento anticorrosivo è necessario installare un sistema di protezione catodica, che ha lo scopo di rinforzare delicatamente una tubazione interrata, in modo che le pile di corrosione siano totalmente eliminate, consentendo alla condotta di funzionare in completa sicurezza.

Durante la costruzione e mentre il sistema di protezione catodica non è in funzione, è necessario proteggere temporaneamente i tubi interrati, operazione che necessita di essere eseguita da personale preparato e dotato degli strumenti e dei dispositivi adeguati per misurare in modo permanente i potenziali condotta/terreno e mantenere la tubazione interrata rinforzata, dal posizionamento del primo tubo alla conclusione definitiva dell’intervento (fig. 4).

Dopo la costruzione, le condotte devono essere controllate con frequenza così che il sistema di protezione catodica si mantenga in funzione in modo efficiente, unica precauzione per garantirne l’integrità e la sicurezza operativa.

Questa operazione consiste nel misurare periodicamente i potenziali del tubo in rapporto al terreno (potenziali condotta/terreno) e mantenere i raddrizzatori di protezione catodica funzionanti nella norma.

Queste misurazioni devono essere effettuate durante il funzionamento della condotta, dalla sua costruzione per il resto della sua vita, dato che non esiste un altro modo per conoscere se le condotte sono o no protette dalla corrosione e con la loro integrità assicurata (fig. 5).

involve the use of smart pigs, using the highresolution magnetic flux technology. This is extremely important for the control of pipelines: the sensors introduced and activated within the pipes are able to measure any thickness reduction caused by corrosion and detect many other important faults that can occur during the construction, installation, and operation phases.

The protection operations against corrosion and electrical and electromagnetic interference that take place during the construction and operation of underground pipelines are extremely important for the integrity of these structures and they must be carried out by skilled and properly trained workers and engineers. Only with the correct use of the appropriate techniques and with the intervention of specialised staff is it possible to design, build, and operate pipelines with absolute efficiency, safety and integrity. ‹

Le operazioni di monitoraggio della corrosione esterna e interna della condotta devono essere completate con l’utilizzo dei pig intelligenti, che utilizzano la tecnologia del flusso magnetico ad alta risoluzione. Questa operazione, estremamente importante per il controllo delle condotte, consiste nell’introdurre e attivare all’interno della tubazione i sensori, che sono in grado di misurare le cadute di spessore causate dalla corrosione e rilevare numerosi altri difetti importanti, che possono verificarsi durante la fase di costruzione, installazione e funzionamento.

Le operazioni di protezione contro la corrosione, le interferenze elettriche ed elettromagnetiche che si svolgono durante la costruzione e il funzionamento delle condotte interrate sono di estrema importanza per l’integrità di queste installazioni e devono essere svolte da tecnici e ingegneri specializzati e adeguatamente preparati.

Solo con l’uso corretto delle tecniche adeguate e con l’intervento di tecnici specializzati è possibile progettare, costruire e mettere in esercizio condotte con assoluta efficienza, sicurezza e integrità. ‹

GC Chemicals Europe, a leading manufacturer of fluoropolymers and the world’s largest producer of ETFE (ethylene tetrafluorethylene copolymer), presented current developments and applications of its comprehensive product range of Fluon® fluoropolymers and AFLAS® fluorinated elastomers at Achema 2018.

Amongst the innovations at this exhibition are the adhesive modified Fluon® ETFE and PFA grades as well as a testing device, which can measure the chemical permeation time of coatings more precisely than ever before. The Japanese company, AGC Technology Solutions, showed their wide range of glass-lined, corrosion-proof, chemically resistant pipe systems and fittings (Fig. 1).

hen developing a strategy to implement, while building the new PathWest Laboratory, accessibility to the project site and constructability were two factors that were prioritized. PathWest was the first project of its kind, a major development that occurred in the heart of a busy university medical campus. Built within the confines of the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Center (QEII) in Nedlands, West Australia, the architects at JCY noted it was, “…the first project to be undertaken in a major expansion of health and education facilities which includes both the Department of Health and the University of Western Australia.”

Oltre alla riduzione nell’utilizzo di macchinari pesanti la strategia prevedeva anche un assemblaggio veloce e agevole. Questo particolare progetto permetterà di effettuare espansioni future senza soluzione di continuità, poiché la parte ovest del laboratorio è stata progettata in modo tale che nuove aggiunte possano essere facilmente “agganciate”.

L’esterno dell’edificio ha un design unico e accattivante. Ogni attenzione che gli viene rivolta è dovuta alla sua facciata; la maggior parte dell’edificio è avvolta in pannelli in fibra di cemento impreziositi con un motivo punteggiato astratto che ricorda i globuli rossi (fig. 2). Lo sfondo scuro dei pannelli abbinato ai granuli rossi dei globuli è in contrapposizione con i luminosi dettagli angolari che abbelliscono l’ingresso del PathWest e che richiamano il battito cardiaco (fig. 3).

I pannelli in fibra di cemento che conferiscono questo aspetto accattivante sono stati prefiniti con Vitreflon di A&I Coatings, un fluoropolimero che utilizza una resina FEVE Lumiflon. La vernice a base FEVE ha offerto a PathWest una pletora di vantaggi, che in ultima analisi hanno ridotto il costo di gestione dell’edificio. Rinomate per il loro colore e brillantezza, per la resistenza alle intemperie e la longevità, le superfici verniciate con Lumiflon non scoloriscono né sbiadiscono quando esposte a raggi UV, salinità e acqua. The final product, a six-story building covering approximately 86,100 squarefeet, reached completion in 2015 (Fig. 1).

During construction, special attention was given to space and time constraints. The usage of heavy machinery was minimized due to the fact that such equipment would occupy space and inevitably result in traffic delays and lane closures, therefore disrupting the entire campus. In addition to reducing the usage of heavy machinery, the implemented strategy also required quick and effortless assembly.

This particular plan would allow future expansions to proceed seamlessly, as the western portion of the laboratory was designed so that any new additions can easily be “clipped-on.”

The exterior of the building donned a unique and eye-catching design. Any attention given to PathWest was credited to its façade; the majority of the building is enveloped in fibre cement panels that are embellished with an abstract, dotted pattern reminiscent of red blood cells (Fig. 2).

The dark background on the panels paired with the specks of red from the blood cells is juxtaposed with the bright, angular details adorning PathWest’s entrance that resembles a heartbeat (Fig. 3).

The fibre cement panels donning the striking design were prefinished with A&I Coatings‘ Vitreflon, a fluoropolymer that utilized Lumiflon FEVE resin. The FEVE-based coating offered PathWest a plethora of benefits, which ultimately reduced the lifespan costs of the building.

Renowned for its colour and gloss retention, weatherability, and longevity, Lumiflon-coated surfaces do not chalk or fade when exposed to UV radiation, salt, and water. Because 3 of these characteristics, PathWest’s unique façade will remain in pristine 3 condition for decades to come.

It integrates a dual stage trigger making one handed operation possible.

The dual stage trigger allows atomizing air to flow to the nozzle first, before initiating material flow from the cartridge.

Each two-component cartridge contains both resin and hardener, separated until ready to spray. This system provides precise mixing at the nozzle, when needed, avoiding waste and pot life concerns.

SHAPE is designed to maximise the quality of performance analysis and to offer expert analysis for efficient operations and a maximum return on investment through its transparent and thorough process. Fouling and mechanical damage to the hull can increase the engine power a vessel requires by up to 20 per cent.

By utilising SHAPE, in combination with hull coatings, Hempel can provide ISO quality documented savings in fuel and a programme of continuous improvement.

Users of SHAPE are able to analyse the impact of dry docking, in service hull and propeller solutions and maintenance on performance, allowing for data driven decision making.

About the project

Located about 220 kilometres offshore Western Australia, the field represents the largest discovery of hydrocarbon liquids in Australia in 40 years.

This LNG project is currently in construction and is ranked among the most significant oil and gas projects in the world. It is effectively three mega-projects rolled into one, involving 1 some of the largest offshore facilities in the industry, a state-of-theart onshore processing facility and an 890 km pipeline uniting them for an operational life of at least 40 years.

In operation, it is expected to produce at capacity up to 2 approximately 8.9 million tonnes of LNG per annum and 1.6 million tonnes of LPG per annum, in addition to about 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak. A Final Investment Decision was reached in 2012 and first production is scheduled to commence towards the end of 2018/ beginning of 2019.

The construction work for the offshore facilities was carried out at a ship yard with the responsible classification society. Offshore facilities consist of a CPF (Central Processing Facility) and an FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading). On the CPF there are several risers and riser guide tubes that will be placed around the facility (Figs 1-2). Due to the size of the columns, they need housings to ensure alignment. There have been concerns that movement of the columns against the housings will cause erosion-corrosion and impact. As the CPF has a design life of 40 years, it was decided to protect the columns and housings with composite bearings.

Composite bearings 3 are generally installed around propulsion areas on ships. There are several ways to install bearings, however once they reach a certain size, the best option is bonding. Due to the size of the bearing required, in this case bonding was the only option to choose.

Belzona have vast experience bonding composite bearings, especially around rudder pintle areas on ships. After a trial ship application in 1979, Belzona was accepted as a permanent installation and used from new on all Germanisher Lloyd classed vessels. One of the first and perhaps most notable bearing bonding applications in service today was performed on a flagship liner, Queen Elizabeth 2.

Bearing bonding is carried out by injecting the Belzona material between the bearing and the housing. The Belzona shim takes up any ovality or housing wear, thus creating a durable barrier with 100% surface contact, electrically isolating the bearing.

There are other adhesive products available on the market, however due to the 40-year design life, Belzona was chosen due to impressive testing, case histories. Belzona hold a certification for the products that are used in this process.

The bearings were supplied in various sizes to match the columns and housings; some of the bearings reached 2.5 meters in diameter and 3 meters in length. As the sizes were so large, the bearings were split into sections (Fig. 3).

This meant that once the bearings were in place, the seams between each section would have to be dammed to stop the injected adhesive from 8 leaking (Figs. 4-5).

Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) was used as the adhesive to inject between the housings/columns and the bearings. As Belzona 1321 does not cure based on a high exotherm, unlike chocking compounds, the gap could be reduced between bearing and substrate (Figs. 6-7). This reduction of product quantity and application time ultimately saves on costs to all.

Due to the scale of this application, specialised techniques were created by Belzona Asia Pacific staff and the application team were trained up on life-sized equipment. One of the new techniques adopted was the use of a nylon jacking bolt which doubled up as an injection port for the Belzona 1321. This saved on the amount of holes that needed to be drilled into the composite bearing.

Belzona inspectors were present during the whole application in Geoje and ensured that the high standards were kept through use of QA/QC documentation.

The system’s floater, which is around 1-2 km in length, will be a continuous hard-walled pipe made from high density polyethylene, an extremely durable and recyclable material. The most high-profile use of the company’s coatings will be on the specially designed floating clean-up system which will collect the waste plastic (Fig. 1).

The biocide-free Intersleek products by AkzoNobel are already being used to help make the shipping industry more sustainable by reducing fuel consumption, cutting emissions and lowering the costs of operation.

It’s estimated that the Intersleek range has helped to save $3 billion of fuel and 32 million tons of CO2 since being introduced 21 years ago.

Several products are now being tested on the prototype in the North Sea to help determine which coatings system is most suitable for use on the floating clean-up systems, which are classed as a nontraditional substrate.

The coatings play a critical role by protecting the structure from fouling organisms. The floating systems will be in the water for long periods of time, and bio-fouling could potentially influence the system’s performance, as well as attracting sea life to the cleanup system.

A perfect fit with AkzoNobel’s Planet Possible sustainability strategy, the collaboration follows on from the recent announcement that the company will also be an official sustainability partner of the next Volvo Ocean Race. This will include organizing a series of Ocean Summits focused on bringing science, politics, government and sport together in an effort to act positively on the issue of marine litter.

Founded in 2013, The Ocean Cleanup aims to remove half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the space of just five years. It employs U-shaped screens to channel floating plastic to a central point. The concentrated plastic can then be extracted and shipped to shore for recycling into durable products. It’s designed to capture plastic pieces of all sizes, from one centimetre right up to massive discarded fishing nets, which can measure tens of meters. By removing the plastic while most of it is still large, it can be prevented from breaking down into dangerous micro-plastics.

FP coatings must perform consistently in dramatically different temperatures and working environments, writes Richard Holliday, Global Product Manager, Thermal Protection, PPG’s Protective and Marine Coatings Business Oil, gas and chemicals producers as well as asset owners and operators in midstream and onshore sectors of the energy supply chain, require high performance fire resistant coatings that provide proven protection in the most demanding ‘real world’ operating conditions.

Passive Fire Protection (PFP) coatings have become a permanent fixture in these industries, largely prompted by the lessons learnt from incidents such as Flixborough, Piper Alpha, Seveso and BP Texas City disasters.

These days these coatings are used extensively throughout the energy and petrochemical complex to protect safety-critical structures and equipment from the threat of hydrocarbon spills, explosions and fires.

In a recent contract, PPG helped the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) which operates the giant Kashagan offshore oilfield located in the northern part of the Caspian Sea to manage its requirement for high performance protective coatings.

NCOC was appointed as the single operator of Kashagan in 2015 under the North Caspian Sea Production Sharing Agreement (NCSPSA). Assets within the 5,600 km2 contract area include the Kashagan field, one of the largest petroleum developments in the world. Other assets include the Kalamkas, Aktoty and Kairan fields.

The customer had two essential requirements for the two offshore Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) modules two and three. Firstly, PPG had to offer a wide range of protective coatings, including with passive fire protection, in this aggressive offshore environment. Secondly, PPG had to provide local technical and supply chain support with compliance to international standards and specifications.

After a comprehensive examination of the customer’s requirements, PPG proposed a solution that comprised the following protective coatings products for the two offshore modules:

In total, PPG supplied over 100,000 litres to cover an area of over 40,000 m2 for the two offshore modules.

PPG’s proposal produced the ideal combination of excellent corrosion and abrasion protection with the most effective defence against the most hazardous hydrocarbon fire situations. The PPG PITT-CHAR XP intumescent coating was applied to the blast wall section to protect the local equipment room from fire and will provide jet fire protection for up to 30 minutes.

A crucial factor in selecting PPG PITT-CHAR XP was its proven ability to withstand thermal expansion from cold to hot climate conditions without cracking.

Additional advantages for the customer were the coating’s durability and its ability to remain free from damage during transportation, assembly and commissioning.

PPG PITT-CHAR XP provides the ultimate solution for extreme hydrocarbon hazards, such as explosions, impacts, fires, and cryogenic spills. Its unique flexibility prevents cracking and delivers superior fire protection by forming an insulating char upon exposure to high heat. This ensures the structural steel’s integrity for an extended period of time, allowing workers to evacuate the structure safely in case of fire or explosion.

This robust, long-lasting coatings system will protect the customer’s offshore EPC modules many years.

The combination of PPG SIGMASHIELD 460 epoxy coating and PPG PITT-CHAR XP intumescent coating offers exceptional corrosion and abrasion protection combined with industry-leading protection against hydrocarbon incidents.

Kashagan field project management company Saipem declared itself pleased with timely delivery, service and technical support supplied by PPG’s throughout the project. This included performance of the products during and after application – in particular PPG PITT-CHAR XP proved easy to apply and able to resist cracking and damage during handling, remaining in good condition when transporting the modules. ‹

kzoNobel is to develop a revolutionary fouling prevention technology which uses ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LED). The pioneering solution – which uses underlying technology developed

by Royal Philips – will be applied to underwater surfaces to eliminate fouling growth.

By teaming up AkzoNobel’s cutting-edge surface protection and adhesion know-how with Royal Philips’ unrivalled capabilities and intellectual property in UVLED lighting and electronics, the two companies are aiming to develop an economically viable solution for underwater fouling prevention.

The innovation will integrate UV light-emitting diodes in a protective coating scheme which will allow for the UV light to be emitted from the coating surface, providing the total prevention of biofouling accumulation on the surface of the protected area.

1 The fully biocide-free solution will provide ground-breaking performance and offer complete fouling prevention to the hulls of ships and boats. The total control of biofouling represents a substantial economic and environmental benefit, and when realized, the impact of this new technology on vessel owners and operators will be hugely significant.

Initially, the focus will be on applications for ships, yachts and offshore assets, but the project could potentially be extended to include other surfaces challenged by bio-fouling issues.

This unique technology was five years in development and was launched in 2013 against a backdrop of tightening environmental regulations and an increasing push to reduce CO2 emissions. Hempaguard is the first Hempel product to use this technology and based on this, Hempel was the first company to offer a performance satisfaction guarantee.

Five years on, the industry continues to seek enhanced environmental performance as well as optimum efficiencies. Hempaguard is a tried, tested and proven solution and its application to 1000 vessels speaks volumes. Lasse Isaksen, Global Concept Director - Offshore, Jotun, says this simple, efficient, and high quality system greatly reduces costs for asset owners: “In an industry, where maintenance costs for operating assets are up to 10-15 times higher than applying coatings in the yards, the fact that you can reduce the number of coats needed, while also extending the maintenance intervals, is a hugely compelling benefit for owners.”

“Traditionally, contractors may have needed as much as five or six coats to achieve the required system build-up, but with the new maintenance system, the full build-up can be achieved by just one coat of each product, resulting in significant efficiencies,”, Isaksen adds.

Jotun’s system has been engineered specifically for the purpose of offshore maintenance, whereas existing solutions are usually designed and tested in accordance with the standard for new constructions. This means they’re often designed for spray application and blast cleaned surfaces, rather than power tool cleaning and brush and roller application.

Isaksen notes: “Our system has been created with the user and end customer in focus – taking into consideration their exact needs and the quality they require to protect assets and reduce costs. This is the secret of its success.”

Jotun’s system is made up of a ceramically reinforced surface tolerant zinc rich epoxy, a high build surface tolerant epoxy primer and a one component polysiloxane topcoat. The system provides the same lifetime expectancy as a premium new building system intended for airless spray application.

greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, there is a need for further efficiencies. As a result, shipowners are demanding marine coatings whose properties extend from improving operational performance to those that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

One of the well-known challenges for fouling release technologies is that their effectiveness decreases over time. This is often seen at the waterline where the impact of sunlight, dirt and UV radiation has a negative effect and leads to the aggregation of slime.

PPG SIGMAGLIDE 1290® was engineered to include dynamic surface regeneration properties. These allow water to act as a catalyst to lower the surface energy of the coating back to its original state and thus restart its beneficial surface configuration properties.

This regeneration preserves the coating’s effectiveness over time, meaning that it will experience no loss in performance and stability of the product throughout its lifetime. Its low environmental impact means that it can be applied to vessels trading in the most ecologically-delicate environments.

When the Eco-friendly Ship Hull film system (eSHaRK) project was first announced in 2016, its objective was ambitious but simple; bring to market a fouling protection technology which not only maintains current state-of-the-art protection standards but is superior to existing paint-based solutions in terms of eco friendliness, ease of application, robustness and drag reduction effects.

The project took its inspiration in part from recent developments in hi-tech swimsuits which can enhance a swimmer’s performance by reducing drag as they move through the water. In fact, the eSHaRK partners have described their ambition in creating a new fouling release solution as wanting to pull the ship as though it was wearing a high speed swimming suit.

Backed by European Union-funding, a consortium consisting of some the world’s leading marine experts and engineers are working together to create an innovative new fouling protection system. eSHaRK consists of a self-adhesive and non-toxic fouling release foil, produced by applying a stateof-the-art PPG SIGMAGLIDE 1290 fouling release coating onto a self-adhesive film.

PPG SIGMAGLIDE 1290® è stato progettato per includere proprietà dinamiche di rigenerazione della superficie.

Queste permettono all’acqua di agire come catalizzatore per diminuire l’energia superficiale del rivestimento fino a riportarla al suo stato originario, riavviando così le vantaggiose proprietà della sua configurazione superficiale.

Questa rigenerazione preserva l’efficacia della vernice nel tempo e ciò significa quindi che il prodotto non subirà perdita di prestazioni e stabilità per tutta la sua vita utile. Il suo basso impatto ambientale ne consente l’applicazione su imbarcazioni che operano in ambienti ecologicamente più delicati.

Quando il sistema di rivestimento Eco-friendly Ship Hull (eSHaRK) è stato annunciato per la prima volta nel 2016, il suo obiettivo era ambizioso ma semplice; lanciare sul mercato una tecnologia di protezione dalle incrostazioni che non solo mantenesse lo stato dell’arte degli attuali standard protettivi, ma che fosse superiore alle esistenti soluzioni a base di pitture in termini di impatto ambientale, semplicità applicativa, robustezza ed effetti di riduzione dell’attrito.

Il progetto ha in parte preso ispirazione dai recenti sviluppi nei costumi hi-tech, che possono migliorare la performance di un nuotatore riducendone l’attrito con l’acqua. I partner di eSHaRK hanno infatti descritto la loro ambizione di creare un nuovo sistema di rilascio delle incrostazioni come un “tirare l’imbarcazione come se stesse indossando un costume da bagno ad alta velocità”.

Sostenuto da un finanziamento dell’Unione Europea, un consorzio composto dal alcuni degli esperti leader mondiali del settore marittimo e da ingegneri sta lavorando alla creazione di un nuovo innovativo sistema di protezione dalle incrostazioni. eSHaRK consiste in una lamina adesiva e atossica che rilascia le incrostazioni, prodotta applicando la vernice antivegetativa all’avanguardia PPG SIGMAGLIDE 1290 su un film autoadesivo.

PROTECTIVE COATINGS | INNOVATIONS VertiDrive and Hamburg Ship Model Basin HSVA) develop and produce a prototype for the embossed fouling release foil, a concept proven by tests performed at HSVA test institute.

Progress has also been made towards production of an automated lamination system that will apply the foil to the underwater hull of a vessel.

A number of trial applications are underway and the advantages of the system are already being demonstrated. So far the foil system has been able to offer clear advantages on newbuild projects in terms of productivity improvements and minimized environmental impact.

On the smaller vessels that have been selected as testbeds, the foil is applied manually due to hull size and shape. For these vessels PPG has developed a highly sustainable combination of the very tough PPG SIGMASHIELD 1200 anticorrosion coating to providing an extended lifespan basecoat, with the foil removed by hydrojetting and renewed after a prolonged period.

This innovative new technology not only maintains current fouling protection standards but is superior to existing solutions in terms of eco-friendliness, ease of application, durability and drag-reduction, all of which will lead to fuel savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The industrial application process allows an exact and optimally smooth silicon layer produced under controlled application and curing conditions. These two elements are essential in boosting fouling release properties as the optimum surface characteristics of the silicone film are perfectly established.

The self-adhesive properties allow efficient application without release of solvents and do not create any problems of silicone spread to the surrounding environment. Application of the foil is a one-coat operation which thus reduces overall application time. Industrial application also allows impression of surface texture - similar to the hi-tech swimsuits lowering drag resistance.

Though the eSHaRK project is far from complete, the early results suggest that it will lead to fuel savings and reduction of GHG emissions greater to those of existing paint-based anti-fouling and fouling release technologies. The result will be an increased reduction in drag compared to the conventional spray-based application of PPG SIGMAGLIDE 1290 fouling release coating. ‹ 44

Hamburg Ship Model Basin HSVA) sviluppare e produrre un prototipo per il film di rilascio delle incrostazioni, un concept provato con dei test presso l’istituto HSVA. Sono stati compiuti progressi anche nella produzione di un sistema di laminazione automatico, che applicherà il rivestimento allo scafo sommerso di un’imbarcazione.

Sono in corso una serie di prove applicative e i vantaggi del sistema sono già stati dimostrati. Finora il sistema è stato in grado di fornire chiari vantaggi su progetti di nuova costruzione in termini di migliore produttività e minore impatto ambientale.

Sulle imbarcazioni più piccole selezionate per le prove il rivestimento è applicato manualmente per via della forma e della dimensione dello scafo. ometimes it’s just scribbles, sometimes it’s fullsize murals in all the colours of the rainbow: graffiti. Some of the sprayers engaging in this mischief are tempted because it’s forbidden, others do it to gain kudos from their peers. Not everyone is impressed, however. Graffiti causes immense damage to cities, communities and homeowners. Removing the aggressive spray paints is extremely costly, damages the building fabric and can cause the entire property to drop in value. Homeowners can now relax: WACKER has developed a new, highly effective antigraffiti product, which permanently protects surfaces with a thin film of silicone. Graffiti and stickers can be readily washed off with just cold water.

It’s a scenario replicated in cities all around the world: under cover of darkness, a graffiti artist whips out a spray can and gets to work. The pitch-black paint etches its way mercilessly into the masonry. The fine pores of the sandstone soak up the acrylic paint like a sponge. After a few minutes, the culprit has disappeared – leaving a personal memorial on what was once an immaculate natural stone wall.

“In porous masonry, the paint can penetrate down to a depth of about one millimetre,” says Prof.

Helmut Weber, founder of the Competence Center for Building Protection and Renovation in Ebersberg near Munich, Germany. “It literally clings to rough sandstone surfaces and is highly tenacious,” notes the construction expert. A great deal of water, special chemicals and a high-pressure cleaner are needed to remove the graffiti. Even so, the outlines of the inscriptions can often still be seen afterwards. The only remedy in such cases is to resort to sandblasting. “But that, of course, strips away the building fabric”, says Weber. “If you do that after every graffiti attack, the building itself will eventually suffer.”

One such WACKER product is already available in the USA. Applications engineer Dr. Hartmut Ackermann and his research colleagues have taken this pioneering technology and enhanced it further. “Like most anti-graffiti systems, our new product forms a continuous film on the substrate, where it acts as a barrier between the substrate and the spray paint”, says Ackermann.

The Deutscher Städtetag (Association of German Cities) estimates the damage done in Germany at 200 million euros every year. In the United States, the Department of Justice puts the annual cost at some twelve billion dollars. The cost of removing graffiti and posters in Germany alone is believed to amount to more than 500 million euros.

“Spray paints are becoming cheaper and thus affordable for everyone. Consequently, the spotlight is increasingly being turned on technologies that can provide buildings with longlasting protection against graffiti and other defacements”, explains Marianne Kreuzpointner, a marketing expert in construction chemicals at WACKER’s production site in Burghausen, Germany. “We’re receiving more and more requests from customers about whether we supply products that offer permanent surface protection and enable graffiti to be removed for 1 a low cost.”

cleaner”, explains the chemist. Tests in the Upper Bavarian town of Burghausen prove just how well the product works. An underpass there for cyclists was treated with the new anti-graffiti coating. “We deliberately chose a concrete wall that is a favourite target for graffiti,” says Albert Günthner, head of the department responsible for the town’s upkeep. “The sprayers usually slip in here unnoticed and have plenty of time to create memorials.”

When the 20-square-meter test area was cleaned, Günthner witnessed for himself how effective the anti-graffiti protection is.

“Before this, we had to use sandblasters to clean the defaced concrete walls, because the paint penetrates so deeply into them. What’s more, the frequent cleaning was exacting a heavy toll on the structural fabric. Thanks to this new anti-graffiti product from WACKER, all we need now is a high-pressure cleaner and cold water. It is very impressive”, emphasizes Günthner.

For users of anti-graffiti agents, it is particularly important that the products are not harmful to health and that they contain no hazardous substances if possible. That is exactly what makes WACKER’s new product so special. “We worked for a long time to find the right composition. The formulation that we have now developed provides optimum adhesion to the mineral substrate and is also designed to allow graffiti to be removed easily and cleanly without residues”, explains Ackermann. The researchers addressed the safety aspect by basing the product’s adhesion promoter and crosslinker on harmless silanes – not on an oxime and tin crosslinker.

From Temporary to Permanent – an Overview of Key Anti-Graffiti Technologies In anti-graffiti protection, a distinction is drawn between temporary, permanent and semi permanent coatings. Temporary systems are made of waxes or biopolymers. The protective film is invisible and can be used on listed buildings.

A further advantage is that the systems are breathable. This means that moisture can evaporate from the building fabric. However, by their nature, such films do not provide lasting protection, as they have to be removed and completely replaced every time they are cleaned.

Even in the absence of graffiti attacks, these coatings will only last a few years.

In semi-permanent systems, only one component of the film is lost during cleaning. The substrate has to be treated again every time graffiti is removed and at intervals of three to five years.

The advantage of semi-permanent coatings is that they are barely visible and permeable to water vapor. These products often consist of blends of organic waxes and fluoroalkyl silanes.

The major advantage of permanent anti-graffiti systems is that they remain intact when the graffiti is removed and can last many years without losing their ability to protect the surface.

The downside, however, is that they alter the appearance of the substrate. In addition, many products seal the surface and thus prevent the natural passage of moisture. The protective film detaches in some places as a result, potentially causing blisters to form or the paint to flake off. Moisture damage to the building fabric is also possible. This is not the case with WACKER’s new anti-graffiti system.

It contains water-vapor-permeable silicones.

These virtually eradicate such undesirable side effects.

The anti-graffiti coating bonds especially well to concrete, brick, plaster, marble and limestone. If a special primer is used, it can even protect glass and metal. In the presence of atmospheric moisture, the thin film cures from the outside in. The silicone molecules anchor themselves in the masonry by forming covalent bonds with some of the mineral components. They furthermore crosslink with each other to form a stable, but elastic, protective layer.

Easy-peel: the anti-graffiti coating from chemical company WACKER is so smooth that neither spray paints nor unwelcome stickers can catch a grip.

“The protective film is about 0.2 millimetres thick and can be stretched by up to 160 percent before it tears.

This allows cracks and irregularities to be bridged effectively, while the substrate is protected from damage by the paint”, explains building protection expert Ackermann. The extensibility of the silicone is also important for another reason: building materials are always under tension. They expand during the day as the wall warms up and contract at night when it gets cold. This is a constant challenge for the protective coating. Another is posed by heat and UV light.

The silicone must remain transparent even under a scorching sun and must not turn yellow or embrittle.

Walls as Canvas: 5,000 Years of Graffiti

The first known graffiti was inscribed on rocks, statues and tombs in ancient Egypt and can be dated back to 2707 BC. Ever since, graffiti has popped up in different cultures, providing insights into the lives of people during different epochs. Particularly impressive are the greetings, sayings and drawings in the town of Pompeii, which was buried under volcanic ash in 79 AD. Archaeologists discovered more than 5,000 inscriptions during the course of their excavations. The Mayan civilization was not averse to graffiti either, as findings dating to around 100 BC testify.

Even the Vikings found time to leave drawings and writings on walls and buildings as they plundered their way around Europe.

In 1915, the future Chinese leader Mao Zedong scribbled 4,000 characters in the toilets of his university in Changsha, criticizing his teachers and Chinese society. This makes him the world-record holder for graffiti with the most number of characters. Graffiti in its modern form emerged in the USA in the 1960s and 1970s, where youths would write their initials, or tags, on the walls. The most prominent of this graffiti generation are Darryl McCray from Philadelphia, who calls himself “Cornbread,” and the Greek messenger boy Dimitaki from New York, known as “TAKI 183.” In the early 1980s, the trend came to Europe. Among the first graffiti artists was Harald Naegeli, who achieved world renown as the “Sprayer of Zurich” in the late 1970s.

The growth in popularity was accompanied by a desire to be more artistic. Whereas initially graffiti was only about marking one’s territory with nicknames, nowadays it comes in all possible forms - from a small smiley to detailed portraits to masterpieces in a riot of colour.

Probably the best known graffiti image is the Peace symbol, which was created in 1958.

Since the turn of the millennium, companies and municipalities have also officially commissioned graffiti.

The brightest star on the graffiti artists’ scene is Banksy from the UK. He is active all around the world and famous particularly for his artwork in London and at the separation wall in Jerusalem. The longest piece of graffiti in the world is in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It depicts the history of the country over a length of 2,245.4 meters.

Se inizialmente i graffiti significavano semplicemente marcare il territorio con nickname, oggi si manifestano nelle più svariate forme – da una faccina sorridente a ritratti dettagliati fino a capolavori con un tripudio di colori.

Probabilmente il graffito più famoso è il simbolo della pace, creato nel 1958.

Dall’inizio del nuovo millennio aziende e municipalità hanno anche ufficialmente commissionato alcuni graffiti.

La star più famosa sulla scena dei graffitisti è il britannico Banksy. È attivo in tutto il mondo e particolarmente famoso per le sue opere a Londra e sul muro di separazione di Gerusalemme. Il graffito più lungo al mondo si trova a Dubai, negli Emirati Arabi Uniti. Raffigura la storia del paese su una lunghezza di 2.245,4 metri.

Laborious, expensive cleaning and remediation are now history. Tests at WACKER in Burghausen show that the antigraffiti film is still as good as new even after having been cleaned 20 times. Experts therefore believe that the protection will endure for years – and probably decades if the mischief-makers do not strike too frequently.

Graffiti adheres so poorly to the silicone film because of the particularly low surface tension of the silicone.

Surface tension is the force that enables some insects to walk on water and is also why water forms droplets.

Spray paints have a much higher surface tension than the silicone coating and so have difficulty holding on.

“A reliable anti-graffiti effect can be obtained with 200 to 250 grams of our silicone product per square meter”, explains Kreuzpointner. “The coating is permeable

For building expert Weber, that is the salient point: “Moisture transport must not be hindered, especially in the case of coarse-pored building materials such as sandstone, because otherwise the growth of microorganisms would be promoted or parts of the surface could spall.”

A chemist and former WACKER employee, the independent technical assessor has been developing building maintenance concepts for many years. “Graffiti prevention is becoming more and more important, especially for natural stone. These surfaces are very delicate when left untreated, and suffer massively when subjected to frequent cleaning”, says Weber.

“Proper protective measures can ensure that the value of buildings is enhanced over the long term.

That’s why we are increasingly incorporating antigraffiti protection into our concepts.”

The extent to which cities and communities are afflicted by graffiti varies greatly from region to region, but one thing is for sure: graffiti attacks are on the rise all around the world. “The need for effective anti-graffiti protection is increasing,” explains Kreuzpointner. According to a US study from 2015, the global market for dirt-resistant coatings is worth 2.3 billion US dollars.

Experts forecast annual growth of around 6.6 percent through to 2026, when the market will be worth 4.6 billion US dollars. “All major paint makers are currently trying to get to grips with the graffiti problem,” says Kreuzpointner.

“That’s why our customers are so interested in our technology.”

With or without anti-graffiti protection, one thing is paramount: unwanted graffiti, posters and other defacements should be removed as quickly as possible. After all, once a building has been defaced, it doesn’t take long for copycats to appear on the scene. ‹

A major coatings manufacturer was not satisfied with its stabilizing primer for roof preparation. The primer was used as a stabilizer for rust and paint on metal roofs before an elastomeric roofing system was installed. The manufacturer needed a solution to its corrosion problems while meeting VOC regulations and not detracting from the superior adhesion properties, flexibility and other important properties in the primer.

Because of the elastomeric nature and high adhesion of the primer, the manufacturer chose Cortec® M-380 Additive. The properties of the additive suggested the possibility of carboxylic functionality along the resin’s backbone, which meant M-380 would bond easily with the primer (Figs. 1 and 2). The result was Cortec® additives increased the performance of primer dramatically. ‹

giant part of a wind turbine has been shaped into a cylinder by a heavy-duty mangle. The stress on the weld seam is removed by heating the piece in an oven, after which the whole piece is sprayed using the TEKNOZINC 80 SE zinc rich epoxy primer. After machining, the piece is finished off with a layer of TEKNODUR COMBI 3430 polyurethane paint.

La sollecitazione sul cordone di saldatura è stata eliminata riscaldando il pezzo in forno, dopodiché l’intero componente è stato spruzzato con il primer zincante epossidico TEKNOZINC 80 SE. A 1-layer system whenever possible

The 1-layer polyurethane system, given in specifications provided by the customer, was taken into use three years ago. “Most of the workpieces we paint are done with the TEKNODUR COMBI 3430 polyurethane paint.

Whenever we can, we use the 1-layer system, because it shortens the lead time by quite a bit,” Saesvuo says.

The wet paint shop was completed ten years ago and today 99 percent of the paints used there are from Teknos (Fig. 2). “We’re familiar with the paints and everything works fine, so there has been no need to change our paint supplier. Besides, Teknos paints dry faster than other paints. In best-case scenarios, the lead time of the whole process is only three hours,” says Saesvuo. “If we need special shades or any changes in the paint, we get them,” he concludes.

“Usually we collect items to be painted with the same shade and then do them all in a row,” Saesvuo says, showing the electronic production management system where color codes indicate the current status of the jobs and when they will be completed.

Inoltre, le vernici di Teknos asciugano più rapidamente rispetto ad altre. Negli scenari migliori il lead time dell’intero processo è di sole tre ore”, spiega Saesvuo. “Se abbiamo bisogno di tonalità speciali o qualsiasi altro cambiamento nel prodotto, lo otteniamo” conclude.

“Solitamente raggruppiamo i pezzi da verniciare con la stessa tonalità e li disponiamo in fila”, prosegue Saesvuo mostrando il sistema elettronico di gestione della produzione in cui i codici colore indicano lo stato attuale delle lavorazioni e quando saranno terminate.

Workpieces too large for the paint shop are coated in the hangar itself. However, there are no signs of paint sprayed outside of the workpiece. Thanks to effective ventilation and an equally effective paint extraction wall, the floor and the walls are clean of paint (Fig. 3).

The word ‘fuse’ gets a new meaning when Tommi Saesvuo shows a pile of massive steel plates on the floor. “These are the 2 ‘fuses’ of the stone crushers. When a stone is too hard and the crusher is unable to crush it, the plate bends and the machines shut down.

Then you remove the blockage and change the ‘fuse’,” Tommi explains.

“We have expanded our production space to 10,000 square meters. The new facilities have a lift capacity of 60 tons and a lift height of over 10 meters.

Just weeks after the 14th edition of StocExpo Europe came to a close in Rotterdam, work is in full swing to create next year’s edition of the industry leading event for the bulk liquid storage sector.

‘We are pleased to announce that the initiatives that were such a success in 2018 will all return in 2019 plus much more,’ StocExpo & Tank Storage Divisional Director Nick Powell, explains. ‘We are the market leading event in the bulk liquid storage sector and have been for over a decade, with visitor numbers increasing every year, but the event still has room to grow. With every new concept, we’re 70

In 2018 The Engineering Equipment and Materials Users Association (EEMUA) ran a full day’s workshop, which was free for all StocExpo Europe visitors. The workshop comprised of five sessions detailing procedures and techniques of maintaining tanks throughout their life to ensure safe product storage and efficiency of operation strategies within a tank storage environment.

Following fantastic visitor feedback, this free content will return to the show floor in 2019. iTanks, a knowledge and innovation platform for the tank storage sector, also ran a free one-day workshop, debating various topics ranging from the future of robotics to sustainability within the tank storage industry. After an excellent response from attendees, this will also be back in 2019.

The late-night opening was another initiative launched to allow maintenance engineers to visit the exhibition outside of their normal working hours. ‘By keeping the exhibition open later, we were able to welcome additional visitors who would usually be working during the day,’ Powell explains.

In 2018 a start-up zone was introduced allowing brand new companies to try out the event at a reduced entry price. Following its success, this will be back in 2019, designed to ensure the StocExpo Europe exhibition is at the forefront of the sector and showcasing the latest technologies, products & services across the tank storage industry.

The second edition of the Global Tank Storage Awards was a resounding success with many tables already sold for 2019. This year’s sell-out gala dinner & ceremony attracted terminal operators from as far as Saudi Arabia, India, Malaysia, South Africa, the US and all across Europe. Attendees were treated to a drinks reception, a three-course meal, comedian, award-winning dancers, a casino and much more, allowing an exclusive opportunity to entertain clients & reward colleagues for their hard work throughout the year.

‘The evening was a real success, with great food, drinks and entertainment, making the perfect setting to host our clients and network with the other companies represented there,’ explains Darren Hughes, International Business Development Manager at Concrete Canvas, one of the sponsors at the 2018 event.

Visto il consenso dei partecipanti, anche questo evento tornerà nel 2019.

L’apertura notturna è stata un’altra iniziativa lanciata per permettere agli ingegneri addetti alla manutenzione di visitare l’esposizione fuori dall’orario lavorativo. “Estendendo l’orario di apertura dell’evento, siamo stati in grado di accogliere anche quei visitatori che normalmente lavorano durante il giorno”, spiega Powell.

Nel 2018, è stata introdotta un’area dedicata alle start up per permettere alle nuove aziende di prendere parte e conoscere l’evento ad un costo di partecipazione ridotto. A seguito del successo ottenuto, ciò verrà riproposto nel 2019, per assicurare che StocExpo Europe sia in prima linea con le ultime tecnologie, prodotti e servizi del settore.

La seconda edizione del premio Global Tank Storage Awards è stato un successo clamoroso e molti tavoli sono già stati riservati per il 2019.

‘We have already started on our comprehensive year-long marketing campaign for StocExpo Europe 2019,’ Powell explains.

‘The event may be 11 months away, but we have a dedicated team building global industry visitor data, creating industry leading content and devising new concepts to ensure we retain our position as the market leading event for the bulk liquid storage sector worldwide.’

More than 50% of exhibitors from 2018 have already signed up to next year’s show, including the likes of Emerson Automation Solutions, Endress+Hauser, Matrix Applied Technologies, SVT, Kanon Loading Equipment, Geldof, Engie Fabricon, HMT, SafeRack, Protego and Siemens.

‘Over the next year we will work closely with our loyal exhibitors to ensure they maximise their experience at the exhibition,’ Powell explains. ‘Our goal is to ensure our exhibitors meet as many new customers as possible, re-connect with existing customers and raise their profile within the tank storage community.’

Following this year’s StocExpo Europe, an independent market research company surveying visitors and exhibitors found that 92% visitors would consider attending again, 93% would recommend the event to others and 94% were satisfied with their experience at the conference & exhibition.

Commenting on the success of the event, one attendee, Earl Crochet, Director of Engineering at Kinder Morgan commented: ‘This is my second time attending StocExpo Europe and I enjoyed it even more than the first. “Abbiamo già iniziato la nostra esauriente campagna di marketing, lunga un anno, per StocExpo Europe 2019”, afferma Powell. “L’evento sarà tra 11 mesi ma abbiamo già un team dedicato per la raccolta di dati sui visitatori, a livello globale, che crea contenuti unici e nuovi concept per garantire il mantenimento della nostra posizione come evento leader del settore per lo stoccaggio di liquidi alla rinfusa in tutto il mondo”.

Più del 50% degli espositori del 2018 hanno già confermato la propria presenza per il prossimo anno, tra cui Emerson Automation Solutions, Endress+Hauser, Matrix Applied Technologies, SVT, Kanon Loading Equipment, Geldof, Engie Fabricon, HMT, SafeRack, Protego e Siemens.

“Nel corso del prossimo anno, lavoreremo a stretto contatto con i nostri espositori più fedeli per assicurarci che possano massimizzare la loro esperienza in fiera”, spiega Powell. “Il nostro obbiettivo è garantire che i nostri espositori possano incontrare più nuovi clienti possibile, riconnettersi con quelli già acquisiti e aumentare il loro profilo all’interno della comunità dei serbatoi di stoccaggio.”

Dopo l’edizione di quest’anno di StocExpo Europe, una società indipendente di ricerca di mercato che raccoglie dati su visitatori ed espositori, ha rilevato che il 92% dei visitatori prenderebbe in considerazione di partecipare nuovamente, il 93% raccomanderebbe l’evento ad altri e il 94% si è dichiarato soddisfatto dell’esperienza.

Commentando sul successo dell’evento, Earl Crochet, Director of Engineering di Kinder Morgan, ha affermato: “questa è la seconda volta che partecipo a StocExpo Europe e l’ho trovato ancora più piacevole.

I relatori sono stati eccezionali, sia in termini di contenuto che di capacità oratoria e i contenuti sono stati rilevanti rispetto all’industria dei serbatoi di stoccaggio di oggi. Non vedo l’ora di parteciparvi nuovamente!”

LEARNING TO MANAGE PIPELINE CORROSION Imparare a gestire la corrosione delle condotte

T

he pipelines that transport the oil, gas, water, sewage, or other utilities that our modern world produces and consumes represent major investments of time and money by industries and governments.

Thousands of kilometres of pipes lie buried beneath our cities and across Australasia. The range of physical, climatic and chemical environments to which these pipes are exposed cause different types of corrosion.

The owners of these high-value assets, as well as the staff operating and maintaining them, must understand the cost implications of ignoring the effects of corrosion. There are many advantages of planning for corrosion control and mitigation, two of which are that the life of an asset can be extended and the maintenance time and costs can be reduced.

The Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA) is once again co-hosting a one-day technical event on pipeline corrosion in Brisbane on Thursday 26 July 2018 with the Australian Pipelines & Gas Association (APGA). The seminar is part of the ACA’s annual technical event program and will discuss the challenges and solutions for preventing corrosion in the pipelines that form vital public and private infrastructure. It has been designed for all industry sectors involved with Pipeline Asset Management including asset owners, project and integrity engineers, operators, inspection and maintenance personnel, contractors, and suppliers.

Sessions will focus on technologies such as materials selection, coatings and cathodic protection used to attain the desired design life of assets. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own case studies, work experiences, best practices, engineering guidelines and failure analysis in a technical exchange open forum, aiming to look at new technologies and methodologies to fill the gaps in these industries. Registration will be available via the events tab at www.apga.org.au from mid-June.

Also taking place in July in Brisbane will be the five-day NACE Pipeline Integrity Management Course. The ACA will present this training between 30 July – 3 August this year. The NACE course provides key training for industry professionals, focussing on the implementation and management of an integrity program for a pipeline system. Topics covered include up-to-date coverage of the various aspects of time-dependent deterioration threats to liquid and gas pipeline systems, interpreting integrity related data, performing overall integrity assessment, calculating and quantifying risk, and making recommendations about risk management issues.

e condotte che trasportano petrolio, gas, acqua, liquami e altre sostanze prodotte e impiegate dal mondo moderno, rappresentano un investimento importante di tempo e denaro da parte di aziende e governi.

Migliaia di chilometri di condotte scorrono sotto le nostre città e per tutta l’Australasia e i diversi ambienti fisici, climatici e chimici a cui esse sono esposte, causano differenti tipi di corrosione.

I proprietari di questi beni di alto valore, così come il personale che ne gestisce operatività e manutenzione, devono comprendere le implicazioni, in termini di costo, derivanti dall’ignorare gli effetti della corrosione. Ci sono molti vantaggi nella pianificazione del controllo della corrosione e mitigazione, due dei quali sono che la vita di un bene può essere estesa e che i tempi e i costi di manutenzione possono essere ridotti.

L’Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA) organizzerà nuovamente un evento tecnico di un giorno sulla corrosione delle condotte, previsto per giovedì 26 luglio 2018, in collaborazione con l’Australian Pipelines & Gas Association (APGA). Il seminario è parte del programma dell’evento annuale di ACA e si discuteranno le sfide e le soluzioni per prevenire la corrosione delle pipeline che costituiscono le infrastrutture pubbliche e private. È stato studiato per tutti i settori coinvolti nel Pipeline Asset Management, tra cui proprietari, ingegneri di progetto e di integrità meccanica, operatori, personale addetto all’ispezione e alla manutenzione, appaltatori e fornitori.

Le sessioni saranno focalizzate su tecnologie per la selezione dei materiali, rivestimenti e protezione catodica, utilizzate per ottenere il ciclo di vita desiderato dei beni. I partecipanti avranno l’opportunità di condividere i propri case study, le proprie esperienze lavorative, le pratiche migliori, le linee guida di ingegneria e le analisi dei guasti nell’ambito di un forum aperto per lo scambio di informazioni tecniche, che punta a nuove tecnologie e metodologie in grado di colmare le lacune di questi settori. La registrazione sarà possibile a partire da metà Giugno, attraverso la scheda ‘eventi’ sul sito www.apga.org.au.

A Luglio si terrà, a Brisbane, anche il corso di cinque giorni NACE Pipeline Integrity Management. ACA terrà il proprio percorso formativo tra il 30 luglio e il 3 agosto. Il corso NACE offre una formazione chiave per i professionisti dell’industria, focalizzandosi sull’implementazione e la gestione di un programma di integrità per un sistema di condotte. Gli argomenti affrontati includono un aggiornato resoconto dei vari aspetti di deterioramento legati al tempo, dei sistemi di condotte per liquidi e gas, valutando i dati relativi all’integrità ed eseguendone la valutazione complessiva, calcolando e quantificando i rischi e formulando raccomandazioni circa le problematiche legate alla gestione del rischio.
