T
he concept of the surface is both tangible and incorporeal at the same time. The surface, with its finish, is a fiction; it brings an immaterial attribute to the product and makes it stand out for consumers to a much greater degree than its functionality and its tangibility. Perfection of the finish means perfection of the product. If design is the key to success for every product, the finish is that which binds the aesthetic requirement with the functional properties, and today more than ever it is capable of indulging and extoling the bold forms of new designs. For this reason we are witnessing an ever closer relationship between the designer and the producer of materials, a fertile relationship that stimulates the development of technology, offering new points of view and new perspectives. Surface treatments provide the possibility of treating traditional materials in fresh ways, giving them a new look in line with current environmental and aesthetic demands. Many new technologies that were created to improve the technical properties and the performances of a product are today used for decorative ends (for example, PVD coverings); certain finishing technologies are capable of creating impossible surfaces, of imitating nature, of conferring changing tactile and visual aspects, guaranteeing the highest levels of creativity. This third issue of IPCM is a doubly special issue. Special because it is entirely dedicated to finishes for architecture and for design, so it intends to address designers directly and provide them with an excellent channel for interfacing with producers of finishes and for finding information first-hand about the progress of technology in this area. Special because it inaugurates a section dedicated to anti-corrosion, an extremely important industrial sector given the high impact of corrosion on the global economic system. In this way we intend to provide information of the highest level that takes a 360° look at surface treatment.

uello di superficie è un concetto tangibile e incorporeo al tempo stesso. La superficie, con la sua finitura, è una finzione, apporta un attributo immateriale al prodotto e lo caratterizza agli occhi del consumatore in misura di gran lunga maggiore rispetto alla sua funzionalità e alla sua concretezza. Perfezione della finitura significa perfezione del prodotto. Se il design è la chiave del successo di ogni prodotto, la finitura è ciò che lega esigenza estetica e caratteristiche funzionali e, oggi più che mai, essa è in grado di assecondare ed esaltare le forme ardite dei nuovi progetti. Per questo assistiamo a un rapporto sempre più stretto di collaborazione fra progettista e produttore di materiali, un rapporto fecondo che stimola lo sviluppo tecnologico offrendo nuovi punti di vista e nuove prospettive. I trattamenti di superficie offrono la possibilità di trattare materiali tradizionali in modi sempre nuovi, attribuendogli una veste inedita in linea con le attuali esigenze ambientali ed estetiche. Molte innovazioni tecnologiche nate per migliorare le caratteristiche tecniche e prestazionali di un prodotto sono oggi impiegate per fini decorativi (pensiamo ai rivestimenti PVD); alcune tecniche di finitura sono in grado di creare superfici impossibili, di imitare la natura, di conferire aspetti tattili e visivi mutevoli, garantendo elevati livelli di creatività. Questo terzo numero di IPCM è un numero doppiamente speciale. Speciale perché è interamente dedicato alle finiture per l’architettura e per il design e vuole, in questo modo, interloquire direttamente con i progettisti e offrire loro un canale preferenziale per interfacciarsi con i produttori di finitura e per reperire informazioni di prima mano sullo sviluppo tecnologico in questo ambito. Speciale perché inaugura una sezione dedicata all’anticorrosione, un settore industriale di estrema importanza visto l’elevato impatto della corrosione sul sistema economico mondiale. In questo modo vogliamo offrire un’informazione di alto livello che copra a 360° gradi il mondo del trattamento delle superfici.
