The iconic BBC TV studios site at White City in West London, with its famous curved glass frontage, closed in 2013 when staff moved to Broadcasting House. Since then, work has started on the transformation of the former studios and the surrounding area: a 145-acre location with an estimated £8 billion of investment. Once complete it will be home to more than 5,000 homes, an academic campus, media village and shopping facilities. The television centre itself, dating back to the 1950s, is being redeveloped by property company Stanhope, with more than 900 homes, cinema facilities, a gym, film studios, cafes and restaurants.
L’iconica sede degli studi di BBC TV di White City, nella zona occidentale di Londra, con la sua famosa facciata costituita da una vetrata curva, ha chiuso nel 2013 quando il personale è stato trasferito agli uffici di Broadcasting House. Da allora, sono iniziati i lavori di trasformazione degli ex studi e delle zone adiacenti: un’area di 600 mila metri quadrati con un investimento stimato in 8 miliardi di sterline. Una volta completato, il progetto darà vita a oltre 5 mila case, un campus universitario, un media village e negozi. Il solo centro televisivo, che risale agli anni ’50, è stato riqualificato dalla società immobiliare Stanhope, con oltre 900 case, cinema, una palestra, studi cinematografici, bar e ristoranti.
Sherwin-Williams was called on by contractor Bourne Construction Engineering to assist with the refurbishment of the famous central curved area, known as Plot B.

Bourne was constructing Penthouse structures on the top of the existing building, where steel was the choice of material due to the quick installation programme and its light weight. The project needed to be self-sufficient, with no access to tower cranes other than for off-loading. Instead, mini cranes, known as spider cranes, were used, and five new large balconies were constructed on the existing structure for some of the refurbishment elements. The steelwork required a 90-minute fire protection period due to its location and nature of the building use. The FIRETEX® FX6000 intumescent paint system was selected as a result. As the steel had to be double and triple handled on site due to logistics and lifting limitations, the customer required a product that was robust and would resist handling and impact damage and lead to only minor levels of touch-up. Bourne stava costruendo degli attici sopra le strutture esistenti, dove l’acciaio era il materiale scelto a causa dei tempi stretti di installazione previsti dal programma e della sua leggerezza. Il progetto doveva essere autosufficiente, senza accesso alle gru a torre se non per lo scarico. Al loro posto sono state utilizzate delle mini gru, conosciute come ragno gru, e sono stati costruiti 5 nuovi balconi sulla struttura esistente per alcuni degli elementi di ristrutturazione. La struttura in acciaio richiedeva una protezione dal fuoco di 90 minuti a causa della posizione e della destinazione di utilizzo dell’edificio. Il sistema di verniciatura intumescente FIRETEX® FX6000 è stato scelto in base a queste esigenze. Poiché l’acciaio avrebbe dovuto essere maneggiato per due o tre volte a causa di limitazioni logistiche e di sollevamento, i clienti hanno richiesto un prodotto che fosse robusto e potesse resistere alla movimentazione e ai danni da impatto, richiedendo soltanto piccoli interventi di ritocco.
