igh strength and self-passivating low-alloy steel, called “weathering steel”, was patented in 1933 by the United States Steel Corporation. Highly tactile, high performance and with a characteristic colouring, weathering steel is one of the most used materials by contemporary architects. Its success is due to its two main features: high resistance, both mechanical and against corrosion, and peculiar look given by the controlled oxidation. The name COR-TEN© precisely reflects these properties: CORrosion resistance + TENsile strength.

acciaio basso legato altoresistenziale e autopassivante, definito “patinabile” (weathering steel) è stato brevettato nel 1933 dall’americana United States Steel Corporation. Con la sua forte matericità, il suo caratteristico cromatismo e le sue elevate prestazioni l’acciaio patinabile è oggi uno dei materiali più usati dagli architetti contemporanei. Il suo successo lo si deve proprio alle due principali caratteristiche che lo contraddistinguono: l’elevata resistenza, sia meccanica che alla corrosione e le peculiari qualità estetiche date dall’ossidazione controllata. Il nome COR-TEN© nasce dall’inglese CORrosion resistance + TENsile strength.
