A DYNAMIC, GROWING HELICOPTER FLEET

Australia and New Zealand are among the most prolific helicopter operating nations in the world, with a combined civil fleet of more than 3000.

y Australia has the third largest registered national helicopter fleet in the world after the United States and Canada

y Australia is the largest single helicopter market in the Asia Pacific, with more than 2500 on the civil register

y Around half the Asia Pacific civil helicopter fleet operates in Australia and New Zealand

y New Zealand has the world’s highest number of helicopters per capita

The region’s mining and offshore energy sectors, agriculture industry, aeromedical services and tourism industries are all intensive operators, with growing fleets of turbine powered and multi-engine helicopters.

Australian and New Zealand companies have developed world-leading in-region support, technologies and procedures in fields such as helicopter maintenance, aerial firefighting, aeromedical and flight safety.

AN EARLY ADOPTER OF UNCREWED AERIAL SYSTEMS

Australia was the first nation to create a regulatory framework for commercial Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) use in 2002 and the first country in the world to begin regular commercial urban drone delivery services in 2019.

Australia’s vast regions, low population density and major industries have provided limitless applications for uncrewed aerial technologies. Uptake is increasing in fields such as emergency services, law enforcement, mining, agriculture, forestry and fishing and construction.

As of May 2023 Australia’s UAS marketplace included:

y 2527 organisations with a UAS Operator Certificate

y 32,260 registered drones and UAS

y 29,621 licensed pilots

y 32,266 Excluded Category operators

Australian companies have been at the forefront in development of UAS applications, from airborne search and rescue to remote delivery of medicines.
