During this past decade, called the 2010s, we witnessed

many changes in America and Iota. We were inundated with new ideas, new inventions, new sayings, etc. This decade began with the reelection of President Barack Obama and the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. We witnessed the death of Osama bin Laden, the passage of legal same-sex marriage, the interference of Russia in the 2016 election, and the election of Donald Trump.

We saw an increase in gun violence, the immigration crisis, the increase conver-

From the Desk of President Elect Charlotte Berry Greetings and Happy New Year! We are in new beginnings personally, professionally and as Iotans. In my new role as your President Elect, I am getting acclimated to the duties of the office and looking forward to all of the exciting programs and projects that each chapter will execute. You will recall at the National Convention, I talked about our roles to Re-committing to our programs and projects with full engagement; Re-connecting with intentionality to collective action goals as an organization; Re-booting our membership growth with focus on our historical framework of business and education; and Re-imagining our roles as community and business leaders with relevant professional educational trainings for women and girls in STEM, business trends and entrepreneurship, creating next level leaders with long-term self-sufficiency. I look forward to Iota’s bright future in this new decade with your engaged and supportive work!

IOTA PHI LAMBDA SORORITY, INC. FELLOWSHIP AWARD The purpose of the Fellowship Award is to give sorors the opportunity to study by receiving financial assistance for undergraduate, graduate or special study. The scholarship application with supporting documentation is due by January 15, 2020 to the President Elect.

CHAPTER REPORTS Each chapter shall submit a reporting of their activities annually. Reports are due by May 31, in a convention year and by June 15 in a non– convention year. Timely submission is imperative. Prepare three copies: original and documentation to the National President Elect, copy to the National President and copy for Chapter files.

New Home for National Headquarters in DC

Over the next few months planning and organizing of the move occurred with Past National President Dilworth, President White, and the Headquarters Fund chairperson, Soror Nicole Ford to assure the headquarters containing the national archives would be moved in a safe, timely, and efficient manner prior to the end of 2019.

On December 21st , we held a headquarters Packing Party co-hosted by the National Executive Director, Soror Vonetta Martin, Soror Shirley Dean Johnson, Eastern Regional Director and Gamma Chapter President, Soror Cory Milam. On Dec. 27, A-Anytime Movers, a minority owned company, moved all items associated with headquarters.

NPC Reporter: What does Iota’s National Executive Director exactly do?



Soror Vonetta Martin, NED: According to our Iota Bylaws, I’m required to support the National Executive Board with planning and coordinating National Convention. Also, I serve as the chairwoman of the National Publicity Committee for the five Iota regions. However, I manage National Headquarters affairs and I’m also the guardian of Iota’s national treasurers at Headquarters.



Soror Vonetta Martin, NED: I hail from Gamma chapter in Washington, DC. It has been about 4 years and 3 months serving as NED. But I’ve been a member of Iota for 16 years as of January 11, 2020.



NPC Reporter: How did you become interested in applying for the NED position?



Soror Vonetta Martin, NED: Under the 20th Past National Officer’s leadership, Soror Dr. Doris Browning Austin, I served with Soror Jane Ward, past chair of National Headquarters Fund on that national committee. They both encouraged me!



NPC Reporter: What is your favorite part about the job?



Soror Vonetta Martin, NED: My favorite part is handling administration, operations, logistics, and assisting the Executive Board to help grow and evolve Iota through project management and analytical skills.



The Chicago area chapters came together on Make A Difference Day to complete a joint IMAP project. The chapters stocked the linen closet of the Margaret’s Village Shelter with sheets and towels. Margaret’s Village provides transitional housing for homeless women, children and families.

Alpha Chapter began the sorority year with the induction of three new members. The chapter celebrated American Education Week by donating books and school supplies to several area schools. And continued its tradition of providing Christmas presents to the children of clients serviced by Vital Bridges, a food pantry in Chicago. Vital Bridges provide services to members of the community living with AIDs and HIV. Alpha Chapter held its first Emerald Ball

ALPHA ZETA CHAPTER On August 24th the chapter held its annual Summit meeting to plan for the upcoming sorority year. American Education Week was celebrated on Friday, November 22nd and Saturday, 23rd, 2019. The annual FIL Essay winner & speaker (L); Alpha Zeta chapter Retreat was held on President Ophelia Troupe (M); FIL ® at luncheon.

Friday night, during which new members were inducted, officers elected, and the assistance needed by the AEW Committee was outlined. On Saturday, November 23rd, the 38th Annual “Apple for the Teacher” luncheon honoring educators and awarding essay contest winners was held at in the ballroom of the St. Louis Airport Marriott Hotel. Immediately after the luncheon, five of six new members were inducted into the chapter by Central Regional Director Jessica Brown, who attended the luncheon.

Alpha Tau donated linen to Martha’s Village along with the other Chicago Area Chapters. In November 2019, several of Alpha Tau Sorors attended the Emerald Ball hosted by Alpha Chapter to commemorate 90 years of IOTA history.

So, we started the year by participating in a Stop the Violence Peace March in Robbins, IL, a Peace Fair at Margaret's Village Shelter and the UNCF Walk at Chicago Lake front. We also participated with the other Chicago chapters in donating sheets and towels to Margaret's Village. Alpha Lambda, thanks to an anonymous donator, donate over $500.00 in toys to Crown Church in Glenwood, IL. Soror's assisted as Personal Shoppers with the toy giveaway.

The Glamourous Ladies of Gamma Tau Chapter were energized to begin our 2019-2020 sorority year with an exhilarating retreat held on August 17th, 2019. We installed new officers and set progressive and optimistic goals for this year! We are determined to exceed our goals of sisterhood and building partnerships!

To begin our forward movement we partnered with NorthPoint Health and Wellness' Annual Fit 4 Fun Event held in Minneapolis, where sorors spent time with community members and participated in events at the Seniors Zone; we hosted an Informational Mixer for women in our community who were interested in learning more about Iota and we hosted a very successful Dorothy Marie Ellison Scholarship Luncheon!

We supported our Sorors by attending the Good Shephard Church, the Alpha Chapter’s Emerald Ball and the Alpha Beta Casino Fundraiser. The Chapter also attended a Breast Cancer Awareness event at Good Shephard Church and honored the teachers at Franklin School with continental breakfast and a goody bag. Alpha Lambda sponsored a successful fundraiser at Governor State University, where we attended the play “CROWNS”.

In November, our FIL attended the play, Annie Jr, which highlighted the life of a young African American male.

ZETA GAMMA CHAPTER Since the start of the 2019 - 2020 Sorority year, Zeta Gamma has held our yearly planning session, participated in Education week by awarding a local teacher the Red Apple award; hosted a coat drive from November 1 - 30 (collecting over 50 coats in various sizes for women and children);

Our FIL group is also giving back to the community.

They honored their favorite teacher with a hot/cold cup filled with goodies and a DD gift card; participated in the essay contest; presented hot soup and toiletries to the homeless at Pacific Garden Mission and participated in the 5K Run/Walk Toy Drive fundraiser, all toys were donated to the “Taking Back Our Community Organization”.

ALPHA TAU CHAPTER On Saturday, October 19, 2019, Alpha Tau Chapter and the FIL participated in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Walk. Sorors Juanita Stem, Sharon Tang and Shaunta Clay along with one of our FIL SaNia Smith participated in the walk. Our FIL also participated in the Children’s Defense Fund Cradle to Success Coalition on October 26, 2019.

EPSILON CHAPTER The Epsilon chapter looks forward to a great year of mentoring, outreach and collaborating in our community. In August, the sorors met for a weekend of food and fun, in addition to planning their calendar for the upcoming year.

ST. THOMAS - In recognition of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority's 90th anniversary, Epsilon Zeta donated 90 blankets to the Roy L. Schneider's Hemodialysis Unit. In making the presentation, Chapter President Merida Gumbs said that Epsilon Zeta is proud to be of service to this community and especially happy that EZ can assist the Hemodialysis Unit with the donation of the blankets for use by patients as they are being treated.

Gamma Zeta blazing the trail with Iota programming and partnerships by incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), which is the new STEM. During July 2019 Gamma Zeta members, like Soror Michele worked with the organization called Envision Lead Grow at their week long Entrepreneur’s Camp held July 7-12, 2019 and held at Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University. The camp helped young girls understand the importance of inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking through (STEAM ). Additionally Gamma Zeta chapter members took the opportunity to promote and advise the youth attendees about Iota’s FIL club, scholarsh ips, and essay contest. Gamma Zeta making a difference.

The Epsilon Eta Chapter distributed treats on November 19,2019 at Achilles Elementary School to the 52 teachers on staff. The chapter participated in the Stuff the Bus community project at Walmart .

Several sorors assisted in placing the school supplies on the bus as the public dropped them off at Walmart. Sorors Laverne Forrest and Cathy Radford worked diligently to coordinate the AEW essay contest.

After moving to the Valley, Ra'Desha was having trouble finding places that catered to people who looked like her so she decided to create those spaces for herself. With a goal to promote urban diversity in the Greater Phoenix area, Brunch∙ish was born. Brunch∙ish is a monthly brunch and day party series infused with dancing, good conversations, and networking opportunities. She is responsible for psychiatric diagnostic assessments for the determination of medical necessity to qualify for an increased incremental pay to the resource family (foster parent).

GAMMA ETA CHAPTER Soror Marri Turner of Gamma Eta Chapter in Fresno, California was recently honored by the Credit Union Members Mortgage Elite Partners Club in recognition of her Mortgage Loan Production as a loan officer with Noble Credit Union in Fresno.

Soror Denise Brandon was celebrated for her service as Southern Regional Director (2015 to 2019) during Rho Chapter’s September meeting. She was presented with gifts, flowers and cards for her tireless commitment to the sorority. The members of Rho Chapter were indeed honored to have her represent us on the regional and national board. She was encouraged to take some time for herself now that her travel schedule will slow down. She expressed thanks for the gifts and words from her Sorors.

Epsilon Psi was overjoyed to be an official volunteer partner for the Fall Business Showcase that was held on November 30, 2019 at the Patterson Community Center!

Rho Chapter members attended the dramatic performance Viola Turner: A Woman of Hayti In Her Own Words, depicting the life of Rho Charter member Viola Turner. This special event featured excerpts from an interview that was conducted with Soror Turner, a cornerstone of Hayti, as part of the UNC Southern Oral History Program. Turner’s keen observations, ambition and sense of humor shined through as she provided insight into life in Durham during Jim Crow and how she became the first female board member of the largest black company in America. Performed by Tina Morris-Anderson.

Making Strides for Breast Cancer featured the lovely ladies of Epsilon Psi and our Future Iota Leaders.

Over $1,800 was raised. Sorors walked with Soror Cynthia Harris, who’s mom is a breast cancer survivor.

On November 9, Sorors supported St. Lawrence AME Church of Eatonville, FL fundraising event by purchasing tickets to see Harriet, inspiring, hopeful, powerful and so much more! “Keep on Ticking” is what their personalized shirts said!

Kicked off their sorority year with Fall into Wine, Epsilon Psi’s 2019 signature event. The Ladies of Epsilon Psi hosted an elegant night of socializing, and wine tasting.

In support of the American Heart Association, sorors participated in the heart walk at the University of Central Florida on November 9th. It was a lovely day for a great cause!

In observance of Breast Cancer Month, Zeta Epsilon Chapter participated in “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.” We volunteered by helping to register participates. We also participated in the walk.

Sorors welcomed Dr. Lula C. Powell as an honorary member on Sept. 14th. Dr. Powell earned her undergraduate degree from Knoxville College and a master’s and doctorate from the University of Tennessee.

She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Alliance of Doctoral Women. She serves as Chair of the Board of Unity Mortuary.

GAMMA ALPHA CHAPTER Fall Rush: “Rounding Up Sisters in a Hurry” Gamma Alpha held its Fall RUSH on October 19. Following the Regional Director’s approval the “The Spectacular & Sensational Six” were pinned as LoMePas on 11/10/19. Gamma Alpha is looking forward to increasing our sisterhood as we continue to carry out the Programs and Projects of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. Sorors Gordon, Sellers, and Neal served as hostess for the annual "Ann B. Smith Scholarship Prayer Breakfast" and Soror Jones (S.H.E.) displayed her new book. Xykeela, Soror Roach and Deborah entertained us; Soror Reed was crowned Soror of the Year; prayer warriors set the atmosphere.

Dribble Drive Against Cancer: Cancer Awareness, Gamma Alpha sorors were bench warmers!

Sorors gathered to recognize Cancer Awareness Month and pledged $250.00 to support the Miami Heat drive to raise money for cancer research.

Gems and Gents (FIL) On the Move Orientation for our 2019-2020 Gems and Gents (FIL) was held on Oct. 19th. Gamma Alpha continues to recruit 6th graders for this year’s project. A second session on Bullying and Self-Esteem was held Nov. 2nd. Kids N Touch Academy is a nonprofit organization that seeks to aid kids with uniforms, shoes, and school supplies and field trip experiences to develop their natural talents.

Alpha Xi Chapter held a rush on October 12th to give prospective members a chance to further acquaint themselves with our members and chapter. Letting our light shine was the order of the day. Displays of paraphernalia and Alpha Xi awards through the years provided visual confirmation of our sorority and community involvement.

Music and Media Workshop Alpha Xi Chapter was a sponsor for “Intersection of Music and Media” workshop at Pellissippi State Community College which was designed to show the students and the community how audio engineering technology can be used to enhance musical recordings.

MU CHAPTER There were 10 ladies that attended Mu Chapter’s September 2019 interest meeting to learn more about Iota Phi Lambda Sorority and Mu Chapter.

On September 21, 2019, Mu Chapter hosted our Annual Back to School Workshop, theme being "Strategies for Resolving Conflict". This event was chaired by Soror Gloria Jean Williams. Mu Chapter partnered with Saving Kids of Incarcerated Parents and Jack and Jill Inc.

In July, Mu Chapter FIL Ms. RaeAna Thomas was selected to represent the AL Region at Harvard's Future Medical Leaders Conference. This highly selective and prestige program provides Ms. Thomas with onhand knowledge from top medical leaders. During this program, she witnessed a live surgery and was able to hear from some phenomenal leaders in the medical community.

NU CHAPTER Nu Chapter has been busy supporting several community sponsored programs. In September, members of Nu Chapter set aside their green and white to dress in yellow to participate in the “Out of Darkness” community walk. This walk raises awareness and funds to support the Suicide Awareness and Prevention program.

During October, members of Nu Chapter went pink by wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness and the search for a cure. Members also attended the “Knock Out Cancer” Pink Luncheon sponsored by the Savannah Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction.

Nu Chapter sorors dressed in purple and traveled to Hinesville to support and attend the “Take a Stand Against Domestic Violence” program sponsored by the Missionary Society at Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Church and the Hinesville Police Department. Women and children shared stories of how their lives were affected by domestic violence.

ZETA ETA CHAPTER Zeta Eta Chapter hosted their first interest meeting in Allendale, SC on Sept. 29th. They enjoyed sharing the mission and vision of our beloved founder Lola M. Parker with the lovely women that came out to learn more about our organization.

Houston and surrounding area chapters of the Southwestern Region sponsored their second annual DIAPER drive kick-off on the largest national day of community service, “National Make A Difference Day.” The walk took place on Saturday October 26, 2019, at the Bayou Hermann Park located at 6520 Almeda Rd. in Houston, Texas from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

ALPHA KAPPA CHAPTER

This year we incorporated a one-mile walk with our donations of diapers and campaign fundraiser for I.M.A.P. through pledge cards and patron list donations.

After completing our one-mile walk, presentations of diapers were made to Jewel’s Learning Center, Endeavors, Booker T. Washington High School Children Today Daycare, an adopted family, and mother of twins walking through the park. Turtle medals were presented to participating sorors of each chapter by our walk coordinator, Dr. Pamela Kemp-Williams, and certificates of recognition were presented by newly elected Chapter President Casey Preston of Beta Pi. The response evaluation was given by 18th National President, Lillian F. Parker, with the charge to continue serving the communities together.

PSI CHAPTER One of Psi Chapters’ favorite activity of the year is volunteering for the “Central Market Feast of Shar-

ing” food give away, which was held on Friday, November 8, 2019. Not only is it the beginning of the holiday season, but also a time where Sorors and Pelatis come together to help serve over 7,500 less fortunate people in the community.

The Feast of Sharing Dinner is a free holiday celebration and is open to people of all ages. This celebration includes a Family and Social Services Area, Kid’s Zone, face painting and live music.

What makes this event unique each year is Psi Chapter is on hand to help serve a complete Thanksgiving Dinner.

BETA PSI CHAPTER American Education Week Beta Psi Chapter celebrated American Education Week during the week of November 18 - 22, 2019, by recognizing Educators and even saluted their own, Soror Willie Myers as a support staff. Members were asked to nominate an Educator they felt had gone above and beyond their call as an Educator and five individuals were recognized: Crystal Barnes, Principal of BTW High School; Katina Williams, Teacher at Oak Park Elementary; Teresa Williams, Teacher at Queensborough Elementary; Dr. Norchia Lacy, Principal at Bossier Elementary and our very own Soror Vallie Mims, Bookkeeper at Broadmoor Middle School. Soror Myers and President E. Mosley visited each school and presented a certificate and an apple to each educator. Using technology, they used Duo so Soror T. Mosley could participate in the presentation to her classmate, Dr. Norcia Lacy and Soror Mims.

BETA PI CHAPTER Christmas Charity Activities The Beta Pi Chapter developed three local activities to support their communities this holiday season.

The first was the “Galena Park Toy Drive” where they collected toys and monetary donations for children and single mothers living in Galena Park.

Next, the chapter adopted a student at C.E. King Middle School and provided Christmas gifts to fulfill their Christmas wishes as what they call a “Spirit of King Donation.” Finally, this busy chapter adopted a six year old resident from the Madge Bush Transitional Living Center. The Beta Pi Chapter will provide him with Christmas and birthday blessings.

Brown Convention Center on December 24, 2019 (Christmas Eve), during the 7:30 am set-up shift. Hearing that the event coordinators did not have enough toys for the children, the Sorors and FIL gathered a trunk full of toys to donate to the event.

ATEX Foundation Partners For Fall 2019 Youth Symposium

This is a yearly event that the Sorors look forward to participating in, as they are able to help over 10,000 homeless families. During the event this year, Sorors volunteered at the registration table, the toy sorting and the distribution sections. It was great to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they received toys. Not only do the homeless families receive toys for their children but this event offers clothes, a hot meal, groceries to take, books to read, and even a fresh haircut or style before leaving the facility. This chapter said that they love serving their community and show their FIL members to provide support for others in need.

The 2019 National Affiliate Assembly of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was held on Thursday, November 21, 2019, at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Washington, DC, 1919 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20009. The

assembly was informative, well designed and timely. Dr. Thelma T. Daley, Affiliates Chair, was instrumental in planning this outstanding program. The meeting was jammed-packed with information, history and conversation. The theme of the meeting was RECONNECTING, RENEWING, REFOCUSING.

We were treated to a history lesson reconnecting us to the foundation and mission of the NCNW, we renewed our connections with introduction of the affiliates and their organizational thrust. The main focus of the agenda involved Social Justice & Public Policy, Pearls and Perils of Leadership and the Power of Partnership, which was presented by Southwest Region three different panels.

Because this is the year that we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment

by Congress, Dr. Thelma Daley did a short presentation on the role of the Black woman in the suffrage movement. Iota Affiliate: NCNW 2020 Voting Rights Campaign

2020: The 100th Anniversary of American Women’s Right to Vote The NCNW Affiliate Assembly held in Washington, D.C. on November 21, 2019, featured a segment dedicated to the involvement of African American women in the suffrage movement for the right to vote. Dr. Thelma T. Daley presented a short history of the women’s fight to gain the right to fully participate in society, by having the right to vote. She stated that even though African American women were denied the right to vote, due to racism, we were still a part of the movement. Iota joins with NCNW in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amend-

ment.

In 1848, women of American officially began their campaign to gain the right to vote at the first women’s Rights Convention held Seneca Falls, New York. But, the only person of color in attendance was Frederick

Douglas, who gave a speech in support of the women.

At many of the most important suffragist campaigns, African American women were excluded or marginalized due to the racism of the Southern members of the movement. But this did not stop their participation.

In 1913, Ida B. Wells-Burnett, leader of the Alpha Suffrage Club, Mary Church Terrell and students from Howard

University participated in the suffrage parade in Washington, D.C., even though they were not wanted by some of the Southern suffrages and was asked to walk at the back of the parade. In addition to Ida B. Wells-Burnett and Mary Church Terrell there were many African American women involved in the suffrage movement.

It took over 70 years, but women were finally given the right to vote on June 4, 1919 with the passage of the 19th Amendment. It was ratified on August 18, 1920, but Afri-

can American women were denied voting rights in many Southern states until the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

This year during Black History Month, in addition to telling our story, we will pay homage to the African American women of the suffrage movement who fought for the rights of all women.
