Moran talks raises, new library By BOB JOHNSON The Iola Register
MORAN — Monday night Moran City Council members voted to increase employee wages by 25 cents an hour. They also approved a $25 a month increase to employees’ health insurance premiums, bringing them to a total of $325 a month. Moran employees also will get a second personal day each year and one day of sick leave a month, which may accumulate to 560 hours, or 14 weeks. Their previous sick leave accumulation was 12 weeks. Council members voted unanimously to increase Municipal Court fees from $60 t0 $70 for each fine, with $5 of the increase going to a fledgling campaign to raise money for a new library. GINGERBREAD WALK 2013
Building tradition together By STEVEN SCHWARTZ The Iola Register
Making gingerbread houses has become somewhat of a family tradition in the Dunne home — no matter how messy the outcome is. “That was probably the hardest part,” Lisa Dunne said, while holding her four-year-old son Eli as they looked at their creation. “It was super messy.” Their family made two gingerbread displays this year for the Gingerbread Walk. One is on display in Kwi-Kom and the other at Town & Country. Eli and his sister Makayla, 6, worked with their cousins Chloe, Emma and Grace to craft a train station depot and a farm-house scene. Lisa said they used everything from gum bricks to build the depot to Fruit Roll-Ups as siding for the farm home.
Above, Lisa Dunne and Eli Dunne survey their gingerbread creation at Kwi-Kom Communications Monday morning. At right sits another of their family’s creations, a railroad depot displayed at Town & Country. Both gingerbread houses are part of the annual Gingerbread Walk in Iola. The winning creation will be selected on Dec. 23. REGISTER/

Creation a family affair

TOPEKA — Rep. Ron Ryckman Jr., a Republican from Olathe, has been named chair of the House Social Services Budget Committee. Ryckman succeeds Rep. Brian Weber, a Republican from Dodge City, who resigned his seat earlier this year to spend more time with his family and to pursue business interests.

It’s put me in a difficult position because I don’t want to pit social services against education. But at the same time, I can’t assure people that it won’t happen because we’re in a situation where anything could happen. — Rep. Ron Ryckman Jr.
The nine-member committee — seven Republicans, two Democrats — is charged with assembling the budgets for the Department for Children and Families, Department for Aging and Disability Services, and the Division of Health within the Department of Health and Environment. It also has a hand in overseeing KanCare, the state’s Medicaid managed-care program operSee CHAIR | Page A3

Gingerbread creations are beginning to pop up in Iola store windows as the 7th annual Gingerbread Walk begins. Barbara Chalker Anderson and her family have designed gingerbread structures every year for the walk. “We always try to do one over the Thanksgiving break,” Anderson said. “This is the first year we’ve made two.” Anderson created a little village with her three granddaughters. It is displayed at Flynn Appliance. “We made little presents for under the tree and used lots of red and green,” she said. Her sister, Cindy Chalker, and son Ben Bockover, made a prairie scene. It is displayed in the Allen County Historical Society’s window. “They wanted to make something simple,” Anderson said. Their gingerbread creations took them about nine See ANDERSONS | Page A3
