The Joy of the Game: Summer Sports 2025

Page 1

IT WAS a wet spring. Too wet. Year to date, Iola has received 28.81 inches of precipitation, 9.92 more than last year.

For area youngsters, coaches, and us here at the Register, all those showers meant lots and lots of canceled ball games. Normally, a free weeknight might be celebrated. But as our deadline to gather team photos crept closer and closer, the magazine you’re holding seemed more and more out of reach.

This year’s edition relied on a village. Before each game night, we huddled to make a plan, heading to fields in Iola, Humboldt and Moran to gather photos before first pitch. When rain canceled a game, we tried alternatives, and then alternatives to those. Coaches texted us their pictures; we texted back asking for names. Parents helped out; local photographers did, too.

Sometimes, it didn’t work. Games were moved to a different field, we went to the wrong place, coaches were late, the photos were blurry. Life happens. Parents with kids playing ball or in swim team roll with the punches, a trunk full of lawn chairs, snacks and Gatorade – maybe an extra change of clothes, too – keeps you prepared for just about anything.

So we were, too. And fortunately, it all pretty much came together. Parents told us the right way to spell a name, coaches texted us a photo we were missing, and the team

we thought we’d forgotten turned up on someone’s camera. With all those moving parts, it was inevitable someone would fall through the cracks, so our apologies to the 8-and-under Nichols Loading team from Humboldt, who we failed to get in this year’s edition.

The oversight brings lessons. Next year, we need to keep a neater spreadsheet. And do some sort of prayer to keep the rain away.

ABOUT HALFWAY through, the inevitable question arose: why exactly were we doing this, again?

It’s a question I have come to appreciate. Once you get over the defensive posture of some version of “It’s what we’ve always done,” there’s an opportunity to reevaluate, learn from mistakes, and think critically. Here at the Register, we need that question. We need to reexamine what we’re doing to see how we can better serve our community. New products come from such thinking. New articles. New efforts. The question often energizes us.

So why spend all this time gathering photos? Why not just let coaches

and parents capture the memories? In today’s digital age, why print a magazine in the first place?

Driving between LaHarpe and Moran one evening to shoot some team photos, I settled on a concise answer: the kids are worth it.

The kids are worth it, and I believe this magazine helps them understand that. The time coaches spend guiding our youth is valuable, and this magazine seeks to honor that. The effort family members and friends spend getting to every game means something, and the magazine you’re holding recognizes such commitment.

In a disconnected world, we should celebrate what unites us. When our fractured online lives mostly consist of people we agree with, we benefit from having to make small talk in the bleachers. Summer sports season involves a lot of work all around, but it’s good for our community. And if there’s one thing we at the Register are all about, it’s celebrating community.

But community doesn’t just happen. It’s not even a thing, really. Community is a process as much as it is a result. It’s a verb, too. It’s actions.

Like meeting your neighbor, attending a local event, volunteering, and voting in an election. Or even taking a team photo. Every little bit helps.
