ARNOLD’S MARKS 40th

By RICK DANLEY The Iola Register

O

ne afternoon nearly 50 years ago, a 16-yearold farm girl named Rita overheard her father talking with another man. They were discussing the beleaguered state of the American small farm. The man was Mr. Arnold, a farmer near Le Roy, and the father of Rita’s new boyfriend George. Rita couldn’t help but overhear. That world is dying, they said. It’s too hard a life, they said. Rita knew that the men were talking about her future, too. She piped up. “Wait now — well, what about George?” “He’s dying, too,” declared her father. “All of us small farmers.”

George and Rita Arnold (with Maggie!) are celebrating their 40th anniversary as owners of Arnold’s Greenhouse, in Le Roy. Arnold’s will be offering free root beer floats between noon and 2 p.m. today and again on April 29. Call Arnold’s at 620-964-2423 with any questions. REGISTER/RICK DANLEY Rita thought but didn’t say: What are we going to do? STILL, she loved George. They’d met a few months earlier at a church conven-

tion and knew very soon after that they’d be married. After high school, Rita studied to become a nurse See ARNOLD’S | Page A6

Iolan hurt in house fire By RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register

Iolan Darrell Cole suffered injuries Friday in a fire that destroyed his house in the 300 block of South Chestnut Street. The early morning fire took several hours to contain, as firefighters repeatedly doused the structure with water, only to have it reignite. The fire was reported shortly after 6:30 a.m., when neighbors spotted smoke,

then flames, coming from the house at 311 S. Chestnut. Cole had emerged, covered in soot. He was transported to Allen County Regional Hospital. The severity of his injuries was not yet known. Meanwhile, firefighters attacked the blaze from both the front and back of the house. The ladder truck was See FIRE | Page A8

The recently created position, director of institutional research and reporting at Allen Community College, has brought Deanna Mann back to southeast Kansas. Mann’s role, as of April 1, is to collect, interpret and share data to support institutional planning, student success and collegewide discussions and decisions. Mann said she is excited to become part of the ACC team. “I knew that Allen Community College was a place that functioned in a way that community colleges are supposed to,” she said. “You walk in and you know things are done right.” But it is more than just the job that has Mann beaming. She considers herself to be back home. Mann was born in Iola to Doug D. and Joan Dawson. Mann’s father was vice president of Allen County State Bank from 1967 to

Chilean student enlightens Rotarians By BOB JOHNSON The Iola Register

Francisco Foschino gave Iola Rotarians an informative and witty presentation about his home country, Chile, Thursday. Foschino, an exchange student, is a senior at Iola High School. Chile, he explained, is a sliver of a country along the Pacific coast of South America, although the southern tip, where he lives in Punta Arenas, also has contact with the Atlantic. “Chile is 2,653 miles long and averages 110 miles east to west,” Foschino said.
