Speedway strives for family fun Race fans know the feelings of Friday nights at Humboldt Speedway.

An atmosphere filled with the sights, sounds — and especially smells — of the grandstands as dozens of area racecars in a number of divisions zip around the track each Friday night from late March until early September.

Many fans have been mainstays at the track for years, yet Rhenda Whitworth knows only too well the challenges for a racetrack to stay relevant for today’s families.

“There are so many opportunities for people to do

other things,” said Rhenda, the speedway’s matriarch.

Rhenda continues to manage the track with her son, Ryan.

The partnership continues to thrive, even after the sudden death of Ron Whitworth, Rhenda’s husband and Ryan’s father, 16 months ago.

“I thought last year went together well,” said Ryan, who stepped up to fill most of the responsibilities his father held. “I’d say that’s because 90 percent of the workers here have been together for 20-plus years. They know what needs to be done, and they know how to do it.”

Instead, the challenges for the Humboldt Speedway lie away from the track, and often have nothing to do with racing.

“There are just a lot of things families can do together these days,” Rhenda said.

Ryan noted families may spend entire weekends out of town for baseball and softball tournaments or find other weekend getaways in the spring and summer.

“I’d say our peak was probably back in the ’90s,” Ryan added. “The numbers may have gone down a little, but we still have our diehards

who come out every week.”

The weather is perhaps the biggest wild card, particularly in the spring, when even the threat of rain may keep some drivers and fans at home.

“These guys aren’t going to load up and drive hundreds of miles if they don’t think they’ll get to race,” Ryan noted.

Still, the Whitworths continue to look for ways to attract newcomers to the speedway.

Over the winter, they added a shaded picnic area for those seeking a place to snack away from the non-

stop racing action.

It’s the latest modification the Whitworths have added to the track over the past 25 years, including new concession areas and restrooms, grandstand seating and pit areas.

“Sure, we want to appeal to our regulars, but we want a fun, clean environment that families want to attend,” Ryan said.

That says nothing of the years of work to develop the Humboldt Speedway oval race track to one of the premier racing surfaces in the Midwest.

Like father, like son on dirt track Dylan Allen hopes to replicate Johnny’s success Dylan Allen understands he has a few more eyes on him than other first-year racers at Humboldt Speedway.

Being the son of a local racing legend will do that.

Allen, 18, is the son of Chanute’s Johnny Allen and is in his first full season as the driver in the B-modified racing series.

“My dad’s been racing for 30 years,” he noted. “I’ve been around racing as long as I can remember.”

Allen also has his father’s guiding influence to help him navigate each highbanked corner at Humboldt and anywhere else he races.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do, but Dad wanted me to wait and make sure I was ready,” he said.

The younger Allen did more than just sit around and await clearance from his father.

He immersed himself in the racing scene as a youth, learning all he could about dirt tracks, engine specifications and figuring out how to put together a finely tuned racecar.

His maturity coincided with his father’s acquisition of a B-mod car last year, one he’d owned previously.

“That was the car we needed,” Allen said. “We knew it was going to take a

Dylan helped as the car was stripped to its bare frame, and then re-equipped with an engine and necessary components to ensure its reliability.

“That was the exciting part, really to get to race a car of your own, one you helped build,” he said.

Because his family also operates an auto parts store, and because he’d already been around the track and most of the racers at Hum-

boldt Speedway for years, Dylan also had several others willing to lend advice when needed.

“These races are competitive, but most of the drivers are great,” he said. “We tend to get along pretty well.”

Despite only racing in the B-mod series a handful of times, Dylan’s runs are getting more consistent, and it’s showing up at the finish line. He took home fourth place at the April 11 B-mod feature, his highest finish

yet at the speedway.

“It’s a matter of going around and hitting my spots,” he said. “I’m getting better.”

Still, he understands the Allen name carries with it an added spotlight not shown on most other fledgling racers.

“There’s a little added pressure, but I like it,” he said. “It helps me get better.

I know how much work goes into getting this car ready.

I’ve already learned a lot

this year.”

He’s hopeful to break into the victory column at some point, yet knows enough to remain patient, to not take unnecessary risks.

“I’m just so excited to get the chance to get out here and race,” he said.

He also looks forward to the day he lines up and races his father.

“That would be fun,” he said, “although I’m not sure how much Dad would look forward to it.”

The voice of Humboldt Speedway It’s a rite of passage for drivers and work crews at Humboldt Speedway.

If you’re around long enough, Scott Stewart will soon give you a nickname.

From “Wild Thing” to the “Wolf Man,” it’s Stewart who helps present each Friday night’s race session to the fans as the track announcer.

Such a job is a natural fit for Stewart.

“I’ve always liked cars,” he noted. “And I always liked talking about sports. I wanted to be a D.J. until I found out it really doesn’t pay much.”

A rainout 31 years ago led to Stewart’s long-time affiliation with the Humboldt Speedway.

As a youngster, Stewart built and raced his own car at tracks across southeast Kansas, including Humboldt, until his father died when he was just out of high school.

Upon his mother’s urging, Stewart gave up racing, but continued to work on the car for Jim Bell in the 1983 season.

A rainout early that season forced track officials to call off Humboldt’s regular Friday night session and postpone it a day.

But the regular track announcer had a schedule conflict — “He was supposed to announce a motocross event that day,” Stewart recalled — so Doug Richey, the track’s former owner was in search of some help.

“He walked through the pits and was asking if anybody would be interested in helping,” he recalled.

Stewart’s hand shot up.

He did so well, Richey promptly offered him the full-time announcing gig.

His pay was modest. He

“I guess people thought I was pretty good at it, because I got some calls from promoters to announce at their tracks, too,” he said.

Stewart worked at Humboldt off and on over the next few years, splitting time between there and other area tracks, before returning on a permanent basis after Ron and Rhenda Whitworth acquired the track about 25 years ago.

“I’d say out of the 31 years of announcing, 25 have been right here,” Stewart said.

As a former driver, Stewart carries an inordinate

amount of empathy for the drivers trying to make a name for themselves on the Humboldt track.

“I have a lot of respect for what they do,” he said. “As they’re going around each lap, I can usually tell why they’re doing this or that.”

Stewart has had plenty of help in the booth.

Roxanne Hutton, whose husband, Gregg, is a former driver, has worked alongside Stewart for nearly all of those 25 years.

They function seamlessly as a team, as she counts laps and helps identify cars and drivers when needed.

Gregg is nearby, serving as

the tower’s communication liaison with the drivers.

“Roxanne is so good, she can practically read our flag man’s mind,” Stewart said.

“She knows what he’s going to do before he does it.”

Stewart has seen plenty of changes at the track over the past 31 years. The Whitworths’ work to upgrade the speedway to one of the finest racing venues around has not gone unnoticed.

“Our old tower used to be outdoors, and we were right above a concession area,” he said. “The heat from the popcorn machine would make it feel about 150 degrees during the summer.”

The old track also didn’t have its smooth banked corners at first.

“There was this one rock around turn 3 that they just never could get rid of,” he said. “It was a car killer.

Somebody would just be racing along, and then that rock would take out his oil pan.”

And before the Whitworths surrounded the track with concrete barricades, accidents down the backstretch occasionally had unforeseen results.

Life in the fast lane suits Weldons Bryce, 13, follows his father’s footsteps Like most young teenagers his age, Bryce Weldon is fond of playing football, baseball, basketball — “whatever else there is to do,” he said.

He also likes driving fast.

Real fast.

So while he’s still years away from getting a driver’s license, the 13-year-old from Chanute already is racking up the miles on the highbanked dirt track at Humboldt Speedway.

After succeeding the past several years in go kart races throughout the Midwest, Weldon began racing this spring in the pure stock series at Humboldt Speedway.

“This is a good entry level series for Bryce,” said his father, Chris, himself a driver in the factory stock series in Humboldt. “As he gets more comfortable, we’ll talk about if he should go up any classes.”

For now, the elder Weldon is willing to step aside as his son gets acclimated behind the wheel.

Young Bryce has been on the fast track to racing fandom since he was old enough to walk.

He began racing go karts at 6, and earned enough hardware to fill his shelves.

“He won a couple of points championships as well,” Chris added.

As Bryce grew older, his father became convinced he could safely maneuver a larger, faster vehicle around

Weldon has raced go karts to great success in the past, and is looking to follow his father’s path into stock car racing. a racetrack, so they began building his pure stock racer over the winter.

Weldon has avoided any major mishaps on the track, although he ran over debris in one of his first races of the year, flattening a pair of tires.

He exited the track dejected, but was itching to get back out as soon as possible.

“The key is to remain focused on his safety, and the safety of others,” Chris Weldon said. “It doesn’t matter what level, things can hap-

pen pretty quickly if you’re not ready for them.”

“It’s exciting,” Bryce said.

“I know it’s a lot more fun for me than it is for Dad.” “I’m a nervous wreck,” his father admitted. “I just want him to have fun and be safe.”

Bryce also has helped with his vehicle’s upkeep.

Chris was in charge of the vehicle’s build from the getgo.

“Of course, there’s a lot we couldn’t let him do for safety reasons, but he helped with the small projects,” Chris said. “It’s what he wanted to

do.”

Bryce noted the pure stock division is filled with other beginning racers.

While the racing is competitive, the drivers also are affable and supportive off the track.

“These guys are all in the same boat,” Chris noted.

“And this is such a great track. Ryan (Whitworth) and the other guys always do a great job of getting the racing surface just right each week.”

The Weldons have support from other family members,

including Bryce’s grandparents, Mike and Jennifer Wimsett of Chanute.

“None of this would be possible without Grandma and Grandpa,” Bryce said.

“They make sure he has all the safety equipment he needs,” his father said.

For now, Bryce is content racing with his father watching from the pits, but there’s a time in the not too distant future he’d like to see how he measures up as a competitor.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

A ‘FinishLine’ fixture fills portfolio Feeding a racecar driver’s ego even a little can take you a long way, Dayton Sutterby notes with a laugh.

“Sure, they have egos,” he said. “Everybody does.”

While the racers get their names listed in various news clippings and radio broadcasts each week for their success at Humboldt Speedway, it’s Sutterby who has earned a special status amongst drivers and fans alike for his photography.

Sutterby runs FinishLine Photography, which deals almost exclusively with capturing images of racers as they compete each Friday night at Humboldt.

Sutterby has been snapping images of some of the premier drivers at Humboldt and elsewhere since 1997.

The pastime evolved out of Sutterby’s two passions: cars and cameras.

Sutterby actually raced briefly out of high school before the costs of maintaining a competitive racecar became too prohibitive for a young family.

He hung up his racing gloves about the time his first daughter, Taelyn, was born.

But he stuck around the track, in part thanks to his photography skills.

“One of the things I realized was that I only had a couple of pictures of me in my car,” he said. “I just figured other drivers were the same.”

So he leaned upon the photography skills he learned while a student at Iola High School, as a member of the IHS Messenger newspaper staff.

“All of the credit for my photography goes to Mrs. (Melissa) Gerardy,” he said with a laugh. “I really didn’t

Sutterby soon became a fixture at Humboldt on Fridays and at a track at South Coffeyville, Okla., on Saturdays before cutting back on his schedule a few years back.

“It got to the point that all of our weekends revolved around traveling to races,” he said. “Now, we can still do Humboldt but have some flexibility on Saturdays to go to big races if something’s happening.”

A FUNNY aside to Sutter-

by’s life behind the camera: “I’ve tried taking pictures of other sporting events, and found out I wasn’t that good at it,” he laughed.

But put him near a racetrack, and he immediately finds the ideal angle to catch the best racing action.”

His favorite spot at Humboldt is in the infield, just inside turn 4, as drivers near the front stretch and the start-finish line.

“It’s probably the safest place to be,” he noted.

There’s only one problem.

Many drivers have more de-

cals and advertising logos on the outside of their cars, so fans can get a better look.

“That’s OK, too,” he said.

“I’ve got some spots I like outside the track.”

While working full time — he’s the parts and service manager at Crow-Moddie Chevrolet in Burlington — Sutterby estimates he spends another 10 hours or so working on his pictures outside the track.

He arrives at the Humboldt track several hours before the races start in order to visit with different drivers

with pending orders.

“It’s a great way to stay involved,” he said. “And they usually like to see me, too.”

Once the races start, Sutterby’s wife, Kyla, sets up a table near the grandstand for fans to visit.

“The kids like their souvenirs, too,” he said.

Most gratifying, however, is when he visits repair shops or driver’s offices in the area, and he sees one of his photographs displayed on the wall.

“That part,” he said, “never gets old.”

throttle got stuck, and he launched himself off the track in turn 3. His car wound up stuck in a tree.”

But those peculiarities have long since been remedied with safety upgrades.

The old tower has been replaced with an enclosed, climated-controlled booth.

“Ron and Rhenda have done such a tremendous job getting this place the way it is,” Stewart said.

“It’s truly the best track around.”

There’s one other change.

“Of course, it’s gotten a lot more expensive for the drivers,” he said. “That will never change.”

Stewart has watched second, and now third, generations of driving families vie for the checkered flag.

And then there are the nicknames.

“I call Roxanne “Queen of the Prize Vault” because she’s the one who keeps track of the box with our trivia prizes,” Stewart said. Gregg was the “Wolf Man” because he was so fearless on the track.

Most drivers appreciate the nicknames. Some even become identified by their new monikers outside the track.

“I’ve heard from drivers who’ve said they’ll hear somebody shout at them by their nickname as they walk into a convenience store,” he said.

A few aren’t as appreciative.

“One driver threatened to kick my butt,” he said.

That nickname was dropped.

Fort Scott’s Tim Phillips built his own B-Modified racer and has piloted it to multiple top-five finishes at Humboldt Speedway already this spring.

Phillips makes mark in B-mods There is a measure of pride and satisfaction of being able to drive your own creation around a racetrack, Tim Phillips acknowledges.

The 26-year-old Fort Scott driver is a veteran at Humboldt Speedway, but a newcomer to the B-mod class, having built his vehicle along with his father, Kenny, over the winter.

“It’s definitely different than just buying a car,” he said with a laugh.

Phillips grew up a race fan, and of cars in general.

“We’d go to races when I was little,” he said. “We

watched races all the time.

It was something I always wanted to do.”

Phillips frequently attended races in Humboldt, Nevada, Joplin and other area dirt tracks.

After high school, “I finally decided to try my money at racing, and we bought a car,” he said. He competed in the factory stock level.

Phillips was successful enough his first year, but decided it was time to build a car, so he and his father put together their own car for the 2011 racing season.

“It was fun,” he said. “I grew up helping my dad

work on cars.”

He was successful enough through the years, racking up 13 career victories and a points championship at Nevada Speedway.

But the checkered flag at Humboldt remains elusive.

“There have been a couple of races where I’ve done everything but win,” he said.

He was leading on the next to last lap in a race in Humboldt last season before a late pass relegated him to second.

He and his father took about four months over the winter months assembling his new B-mod racer, with

which he’s already seen some success.

He picked up a heat win at the April 4 races, finishing fourth in that feature. He followed that up with a fifthplace feature finish the next week.

“It’s a learning experience,” he said. “There’s a lot more you can adjust on these cars, and there’s a lot more you have to learn.”

The quality of his fellow competitors is also a bit higher at the B-mod level.

“We have a good track with good drivers here,” he said. “I’m excited to see how things go.”

Smith finds a home in winners’ circle Travis Smith is on the fast track to success.

The 22-year-old Parsons native has made an indelible imprint at Humboldt Speedway to mark the 2014 race season.

He’s won the modified feature three times already, courtesy of the new chassis he purchased recently from another Humboldt Speedway stalwart, Chanute’s John Allen.

“Everybody always looked up to John, myself included,” Smith said. “To have a car pretty much identical to what he races, and to win against somebody you look up to, feels pretty cool.”

Smith is one of the youngest track veterans around, having gotten his start with motocross racing at the tender age of 4.

Through the years, he’s zipped around in go karts, midget racers — and now for seven years — as part of the highest class of dirt track racing in southeast Kansas, the A-modified series.

He’d been successful pretty much everywhere he went, although he only picked up his first career win at Humboldt last May. Veteran observers were caught off guard, not by his victory, but the fact that he hadn’t won there before.

“He was fast, consistent,” track announcer Scott Stewart wrote. “No one seemed to realize that Smith had yet to win a feature.”

Now, it’s reaching the point that it’s hard to recall a points feature Smith hasn’t won at Humboldt. (The opening weekend for those keeping track).

He even was moving up in the standings — “I figure I was 17th or 18th” — before a blown transmission seal midway through the race relegated him to 24th.

Still, the event left Smith optimistic he can continue to improve as the regular season hits high gear.

“It was a blast getting to go up against drivers who have won pretty much everything there is to win at this level.”

Ryan and a crew of 10 work each week to ensure the dirt and clay have the ideal moisture content to offer up several racing “grooves” as each night progresses.

The best tracks allow drivers to drive high or low and maintain speed.

Humboldt’s is one of the best, many drivers note repeatedly.

Rhenda and Ryan, conversely, heap praise on the track’s crew.

“We don’t make enough money to pay these people much,” Rhenda said. “They do what they do because they love it.”

“Those guys all know what needs to be done, and they work well together,” Ryan said. “Most people don’t realize we probably have 50 people working here each week. Somebody has to work the concessions area and keep the restrooms clean. Nobody notices them, but we couldn’t do this without their help.”

The speedway also has topnotch emergency personnel.

Ambulance crews from the Allen County Emergency Management Service are on standby for each racing session, while fire crews from the Kansas Speedway come down each week.

“It definitely reflects well upon us,” Ryan said. “I grew up around this track, and this is all I’ve ever wanted to do. I think I’ve been to one football game in my life.”

While it’s the racing that draws large crowds week in and week out, it’s the staff that keeps them coming back, Ryan noted.

“We’re just one big family,” Rhenda said. “A racing family.”

Chanute’s Donald McIntosh traded in his pit pass for a seat behind the wheel. The long-time pit crew member built his own pure stock racer this year to run at Humboldt Speedway.

McIntosh finds his groove No offense to his friends around Humboldt Speedway, but Donald McIntosh grew a bit weary of fixing up racecars so that others could do the driving.

“I figured why let them have all the fun,” the Chanute native said. “I wanted to play around, too.”

So McIntosh bought a car, fixed it up for traversing around the three-eighthsmile dirt track at Humboldt and has already made his mark at the speedway’s pure stock division.

McIntosh, in his second year of racing, won the season-opener at Humboldt, while earning two other topthree finishes.

“I got to drive a few mechanic’s races before, but

nothing like this,” McIntosh said. “It feels good to be out there in my own car.”

And winning.

McIntosh grew up in Chanute. He was best friends with Todd Kidwell and Riley Whitworth, whose families are well known among racing fans across southeast Kansas.

And like his friends, McIntosh spent hours upon hours watching races, waiting for the day he could be a part.

He started working on Riley Whitworth’s pit crew in high school, and liked it so much he stayed for several years.

Then, with help from his father-in-law, McIntosh took the plunge and bought his

own car last season.

He’s content to bide his time in the pure stock division, particularly as he gets a better feel behind the wheel.

“The more laps I put in, the better feel I get about the car,” he said. “I’m still learning.”

He also has the added experience of his countless hours under the hood.

Not only can he diagnose issues while driving; he also can do the repairs himself.

For example, McIntosh was hurriedly installing front springs in his vehicle prior to a recent race, finishing scant minutes before his heat race was to begin.

If he ever decides to bump up to a higher class,

McIntosh will do so only after fully exploring all of his options.

Even so, his early success at pure stock leaves him encouraged.

“It’s more expensive the higher you go,” he said. “If I make a mistake here, it’s bad, but if I make a mistake in B-mods, it’s probably going to be more expensive for me and everybody else.”

McIntosh has high praise for the Whitworth family, which owns the track, and the legions of workers who make each race go off without a hitch.

“There are races at other area tracks, but this is where my focus is,” he said.

“This is where I want to earn the points.”
