There’s little doubt Allen County’s new hospital is the biggest story of the year for 2013.

The $25 million facility brings healthcare into the 21st Century with state-ofthe-art technology and an environment that puts patients first.

Along with the new facility the county took back control of the hospital, severing its lease agreement with Healthcare Corporation of America. Its board of directors, made up of citizens from Humboldt, Moran, LaHarpe and Iola, have responsibility for the hospital’s bottom line, which should provide a healthy stream of revenue to keep the hospital current and competitive.

The Uniting for Excellence fundraising campaign was at the forefront for raising money to go toward the purchase of equipment for the new hospital.

The effort to date has raised more than $2.6 million in gifts and pledges.

It was also through a partnership of the Allen County Community Foundation and the Kansas Health Foundation out of Wichita that funds for the hospital have been raised. The KHF agreed to match donations to the hospital equipment fund by 25 percent as well as a 50 percent match to donations made to the communi-

The Allen County Community Foundation also has made gifts of $500 to Thrive Allen County, $500 to the Circles Out of Poverty program, and $1,000 to Hope Unlimited, Iola’s shelter for abused women and children.

THE MERGER of emergency medical services between Iola and Allen County will take effect the first of the year. It’s been 10 years in the making to coordinate the ambulance and fire fighting services. Efficiencies should result in a net savings to Allen County taxpayers of an estimated $400,000 each year.

Other highlights of the year include: • The Southwind Trail from Iola to Humboldt. The former railway bed was rescued from 50-plus years of neglect through the backbreaking efforts of local volunteers. Today, the 6.5 mile

stretch provides a scenic trail that cuts through rural landscapes. Use of the trail is free and has proved to be a popular destination for athletes of all types and levels.

• The Neosho River Park in Humboldt also was dedicated this year. A massive stone amphitheater provides the perfect setting for performances in nature’s resplendent beauty.

• A new industry, Catalyst Artificial Lift, soon will locate in the old Haldex building. Formerly 2 R Tool of Humboldt, the company makes oil field equipment.

Plans are to hire on additional employees, boosting its current workforce of 22 to 75 in the near future and up to 120 over the next five years. The business currently is retrofitting the former brake plant.

• B&W Trailer Hitches of Humboldt is expanding big time. The 26-year-old business begun by Joe Works and former partner Roger Baker is building a 106,000-squarefoot addition to its expansive campus. Employment is a steady 290. * Gates Corporation employs 730 and Russell Stover Candies is at 258. And while the county’s unemployment rate is 5 percent, the lowest since the 2008 recession took hold, a new program called Circles out of Poverty shows that without adequate skills

some people never will be able to advance beyond minimum wage positions.

• Iola High School’s baseball team qualified for state this year. The summer version, the American Legion’s Indians, won state and advanced to national level competition.

• And again in Humboldt, a new athletic complex makes cheering on the Cubs all the more fun.

IT HASN’T been all roses.

Colony lost a significant portion of its downtown on Dec. 5 when the Colony Diner and its neighboring convenience store were destroyed by fire.

Downtown Iola is also witnessing some vacancies. Home Detail, Diamond Daisy and Classy Attic have closed or will have closed by the end of the year.

We’re hoping the saying, “When one door closes, another opens,” stays true. So far, Funkie Monkey Bling, a retail store for teens and women, has located on the corner of South Street and Madison, the former location of the Diamond Daisy flower shop.

For those who have lost loved ones, the end of the year always signals a milestone. We will begin 2014 with one less, hearkened to remember life is for the living, waste not.

JANUARY

3 — Grant helps local women: Thrive Allen County has received a grant that will help Allen County women lacking health insurance to stay current on their annual wellness exams.

The $1,000 grant will allow for 22 women to get the exam done for free. The exams typically cost $45 apiece.

7 — A group of rail trail volunteers braved the crisp cold of Saturday morning to continue working on the fence that will line the sides of the Elm Creek bridge.

The trail, tentatively named the Southwind Rail Trail, will extend from where the Prairie Spirit Trail ends at Riverside Park in Iola, and continue south for almost seven miles to Humboldt.

9 — Jason Nelson stepped down as director of Allen County’s Emergency Medical Services at Tuesday’s county commission meeting.

His resignation, effective Jan. 31, came after a fiveminute executive session.

Nelson later told the Register he was leaving to take a position as a flight paramedic with Life-Team, a critical care ambulance service. It operates helicopter, fixed wing and ground ambulances.

10 — A grant for $95,000 will go toward the salaries of a full-time dentist and full-time hygienist at Iola’s dental clinic operated by the non-profit Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas in Pittsburg.

The Iola dental clinic provides care to the uninsured and the underinsured across the region.

12 — Tom Williams’ tenure as sheriff will draw to a close Monday when undersheriff Bryan Murphy is sworn in as sheriff.

Williams isn’t completely retiring. Come Monday, he will be sworn in as an Allen County commissioner.

His mission: To solve the ongoing ambulance issue.

“It’s what I ran on. I won’t run again if I don’t,” he said.

“What we are doing right now isn’t good for the taxpayers.”

15 — HUMBOLDT — Hum-

boldt voters will be asked again to approve a half-cent sales tax to generate revenue for street repairs.

The issue will be the same as one turned down 441-218 in a mail ballot referendum last September.

A second election was proposed to council members Monday night by Dan Gulich and Mark Slater, who form the street committee. No date was set for the tax, which would push Humboldt overall sales tax to 9.3 percent.

“We need to fix the streets and if presented right, I think the vote will pass,” said Gulich, who noted September’s election came soon after the council approved a budget that contained a 10-mill tax levy hike, which may have left taxpayers in a sour mood. ***** Brian Pekarek, USD 257 Superintendent of Schools, submitted his resignation effective June 30, at Monday night’s board meeting.

16 — A covey of volunteers who sort and sell used clothing and household goods at the Iola Senior Citizens thrift shop, 223 N. State St., donated $16,000 to benevolent organizations during 2012.

Of the total, $1,200 went to kindergarten and firstgrade classrooms in USD 257 schools.

“Many teachers spend from their own pockets to provide students with what they need,” Hess said, allowing that his group was eager to help out. Another

CURB, the Church Utility Relief Board, received $2,000 last winter to help pay utility bills for needy families, and Hope Unlimited received $2,500. Allen County Hospice benefited by $1,000.

Receiving $500 each were Project Care, Humboldt Food Pantry, Allen County Crime Stoppers, CASA, and Adopta-Child.

Much of the money is raised a quarter at a time.

23 — Fire damages Strickler dairy: Late Tuesday night flames erupted from the main milking barn at Strickler Dairy north of Iola and quickly consumed the roof and caused damage throughout.

“It took the top off the barn,” said Steve Strickler, owner, this morning.

Milking operations for the 350 head of cattle have been suspended. The dairies of Gary Foster in Uniontown and Robert Lowe in Prescott, Mo., have been secured to relieve the cows of their milk, Strickler said.

“The poor cows,” he said.

“This is very hard on them to go through the fire and now to transport them. They won’t produce milk as they

should.”

Strickler said the going price for milk “is not high enough” to make milk production very profitable. “The price of peat has been so high, and the price of milk so low, it’s been tough,” he said.

And now with the fire, “We’re losing money every day,” he said.

Strickler said it’s too soon to know the immediate future of the dairy.

“In a best case scenario, chances are we could be milking within a week,” he said.

The grant will fully fund the program for five years; meaning Henry won’t have to worry about the program’s survival for four more years.

SAFE BASE is a free afterschool and summer program for USD 257 elementary students. The program is in its 13th year and is funded by grants and donations.

When Henry was originally hired 13 years ago her contract was only for three years. She was told that she must find sustainability for the program. By the end of this grant’s life, in 2017, SAFE BASE will have been in operation 18 years.

FEBRUARY

5 — Decision to adopt: ‘Boiled down to love:’ At a time when most folks their age are well on their way to slowing down, Tim and Teresa Henry’s sched-

ules remain as hectic as ever.

But it’s not just from work, even though the Henrys own Twin Motors Ford, one of the largest Ford dealerships in eastern Kansas.

Instead, the Henrys also dedicate blocks of time for assorted activities for 9-yearold Destiny, their granddaughter whom they have raised since she was an infant.

“You definitely have to have the ability to get up and go,” Tim said. “She has all kinds of things going on.”

The Henrys, rural LaHarpe, are part of a growing segment of today’s U.S. population, in which children live in households headed by somebody other than their parent.

“A lot of it boiled down to love,” Tim said. “And this was the right thing to do.”

Tim and Teresa took custody of Destiny when she was about eight months old when her mother became entangled with drugs.

“I’d guess a large number of grandparents wind up with kids that way,” Tim said. “Drugs are nasty, nasty stuff, and it’s hard to let go.”

18 — Few things are more worthless, from a dairyman’s perspective, than a dry milk cow that isn’t pregnant.

That was an overriding concern for Steve Strickler four weeks ago after the milk parlor at Strickler Dairy burned at the northeast corner of Iola.

About 350 high-grade Holsteins were being milked twice a day and the result of the fire was that Strickler had no place to continue the chore.

“Within 15 hours, we had them all moved, 250 to a dairy near Hiattville and 100 to Prescott,” he said.

That was the initial stopgap measure.

“We had to get them somewhere quickly so they could be milked,” Strickler observed. “If a cow isn’t milked, it gets awfully painful for her right away and eventually they dry themselves up.”

The Hiattville dairy had been milking 140 head, and could assimilate the additional cows for only so long.

25 — Iola High senior Stephen McDonald made school history by earning the first ever IHS state medal in wres-

tling. McDonald came from behind in dramatic fashion in his Class 4A state semifinals at the 220-pound weight level to defeat Pratt’s Austin Gates. He wound up with a 24-4 record after falling in the finals to Jefferson West’s Justin Scott.

27 — Longtime Iolan June Toland died today. She was 98. She was the greatgranddaughter of Allen County pioneers Samuel and Permelia Hubbard, June Toland who settled near Cofachique in 1857.

lies as a social worker with the Kansas Social Rehabilitation Services. He was married to Barbara Anderson.

28 — About 30 families living at Crossroads Motel began looking for a new home Wednesday when they were notified power would be shut off at the motel at noon today.

City Clerk Roxanne Hutton said notices were made at each room.

“Some of the people were packing and said they were going to move in with friends or families,” she said, although some may have difficulty finding a place to stay.

Hutton said payment was tardy for the utility billing for December.

The city’s policy is to give

The motel wasn’t alone in having utilities shut off for failure to pay a bill.

“We shut off 22 residences Wednesday, but most of them then paid bill and had power restored,” Hutton said.

“We have about $2,500 to help with rent and things like that,” said the Rev. Phil Honeycutt, but allowed that all resources couldn’t be committed because others

Honeycutt said IMA might be able to provide a night or two lodging in another local motel or pay for bus fare to Joplin, where there is a homeless shelter. He said motel lodging would cost about $50 a night, about the same for a bus ticket to Joplin.

2 — Power was restored to Crossroads Motel Friday after its owner, Kiran Gandhi, arranged to pay an overdue utility bill.

The city disconnected electricity to most of the motel’s 61 rooms at noon Thursday, after a bill sent on Jan. 10 for service in December hadn’t been paid.

“I was behind $3,000 and paid the bill,” Gandhi told the Register shortly before 10 a.m. Friday. “They (city crews) will be here pretty soon to turn the power back on.”

When power was cut Thursday, about 30 families living at the motel full time were told to vacate their rooms. A few were allowed to remain because a handful of rooms, added after the motel was built, are served by a separate electric meter, which wasn’t involved with the delinquent bill.

Iola’s policy does not require a residence be vacated when electricity is cut off.

That order came from the state agency that regulates lodging, on note that the office and laundry room were

season. Included in the postseason run were a pair of memorable wins in double overtime against Burlington in the substate semifinal and a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Eureka in the substate title game one night later.

Also qualifying for the state basketball playoffs were Crest High’s boys and Southern Coffey County High’s girls in Class 1A, Division II. 18 — Dr. John Silas Bass passed away in 1923, more than a decade before the North Community Build-

ing was constructed, yet it stands as a testament to the late doctor as one of Iola’s great leaders.

Bass was one of a few who wanted to see a community center built for the African American community, and his dream would eventually become the building that stands on North Buckeye Street. The Iola City Council recently voted to rename the building in Bass’ honor — a pursuit of several people affected by the legacy of the good doctor.

“His achievements made black people believe they can do great things,” Rosemary said.

Dr. Bass’ achievements were many.

Born into slavery in 1848, Bass lived what he described as “a life of hardship.”

He served as a cart boy in the Civil War, before attending Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. He began practicing medicine in Murfreesboro, Tenn., before moving to Iola to practice in 1901.

During his life he endured slavery, post-war poverty and the rise of the Ku Klux Klan.

26 — The Bowlus Fine Arts Center has received a boost in its annual funding from the city.

Passed on a unanimous motion during Monday night’s city council meeting, the Bowlus will now be funded on a 1.0 mill levy through the city. The levy is currently valued at $31,952 for 2013.

The center had been receiving $25,000 yearly from the city, after an increase from $16,000 in 2007.

City Administrator Carl Slaugh said the funding through the mill levy would allow funding that fluctuates with inflation, among other things.

“It would provide some increase as property values change,” Slaugh said.

“I’d take 50 more volunteers, even 100 more,” said Aimee Daniels, director of CASA for the 31st Judicial District of Allen, Woodson, Wilson and Neosho counties.

Need for volunteers has been constant since CASA took flight in the four-county judicial district in 2005.

“We’ve handled 112 cases,” Daniels said of the sevenplus years of CASA activity, with 45 percent, or 51, of the cases involving Allen County children. Other cases originated in Neosho, 36, Wilson, 31, and Woodson, 16.

Tuesday, December 31, 2013 died this morning at a hospice facility in Topeka. Lynn was recognized across the state as a distinguished and insightful editorial voice guiding his beloved state of Kansas.

He was the third publisher of the Register, following the footsteps of his uncle, Angelo C. Scott, and his grandfather, Charles F. Scott, who purchased the paper in 1882. He was at the Register’s helm from 1965 to 2000, when he sold it to his daughter, Su-

san Lynn. He continued to write editorials for the Register until earlier this year, when it was discovered he had cancer.

“You can’t put a price tag on experience,” Jim said.

27 — The 31st Judicial District has stepped out of its comfort zone to embrace a program that exposes the more human side of the court system.

Drug Court, started in January, is a program for those charged with felony drug possession crimes in an effort to “make their lives better,” said District Judge Daniel Creitz.

Macha brought home a dramatic Class 4A state golfing championship Monday.

Macha’s round of 72 earned him a spot in a threeway playoff with Wichita Collegiate’s Camron Chugg and KC Piper’s Montana Fasching.

Macha took little time in taking home the championship, earning par on the 488yard No. 1 hole. His playoff opponents both took bogeys.

25 — Iola High’s magical run through the 2013 baseball season came up two innings shy of perfection Friday.

The Mustangs, leading Topeka Hayden, 4-3, in the Class 4A saw that slim lead dissipate in the fifth inning.

Hayden scored twice in a span of two batters to take the lead, then added an insurance run in a 6-4 win.

The loss was the only defeat of the season for the 20-1 Mustangs, who saw four players — Levi Ashmore, Trent Latta, Mason Coons and Derrick Weir — earn all-state honors. In addition, head coach Mark Percy was named Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches’ Class 4A Coach of the Year.

Over 100 cyclists, walkers and enthusiasts showed up for the ribbon cutting for the Southwind Rail Trail Saturday afternoon in Riverside Park. The trail runs along the old railroad bed of the Sante Fe Railroad.

12 — Allen County might have to spend as much as $200,000 to reconfigure its courthouse and provide personnel to restrict concealed carry of firearms into the building.

A state law that takes effect July 1 permits concealed carry in public buildings, except those housing agencies

having some reliance on federal funding.

The Kansas Capitol, where legislators who passed the law gather each year, also is off-limits to concealed carry.

22 — There is a notable difference between June 11, 2012, and June 11, 2013, for Amy Karr — 170.4 pounds to be exact.

One year ago, Karr decided she wanted to change her life. She weighed 343 pounds and was not active. Now she weighs half that much.

Strangely enough, it took a different sort of life change to act as a catalyst for her transformation.

“Honestly, it was a broken heart,” Karr said. She and her husband had filed for divorce, she was alone and didn’t like the direction she was heading.

something amazing, something unheard of. It is taking 68 students for one week into the Rocky Mountains of Colorado on a $100,000 grant obtained in March.

There are about 25 staff on the trip, including a police officer and a registered nurse.

The students could not be in better hands, and Angela Henry, along with the help of her staff, deserve all the credit.

Each day is filled with new activities and experiences for these southeast Kansas youths. Their time spent in the mountains will extend much further than when they unpack their luggage at home.

The students hiked in Rocky Mountain National Park, took a ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad, toured the Tabor Opera House in Leadville, panned for gold outside of Leadville’s Matchless Mine, petted timber wolves at Cripple Creek’s Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center, visited the cliff dwellings of the Anasazi tribe in Manitou Springs, and rode the rapids down the Arkansas River at Canon City. a higher deductible when told the school’s insurance premiums were due to become more expensive. The college’s premium rates for the 2013-14 school year have jumped from $51,900 to $76,100. The increases were because of jumps in the college’s property and worker’s compensation policies.

“Property insurance across the board has taken some huge increases,” said Loren Korte, owner of Personal Service Insurance, which carries the college’s insurance policy. He attributed the rise in cost to repair materials and labor, as well as ACC’s location in a tornado-prone region.

Campbell Post 15 AA Indians brought home their second straight state championship — a historic event. The Indians were the first Iola athletic team in any sport to earn two straight state titles.

How they won was bittersweet. Iola was crowned co-champs with Westmoreland-Rock Creek after rains washed away the championship game in Pratt.

Both teams earned plaques, but Iola was chosen

as Kansas’ representative in the Central Plains Regional Tournament one week later because the Indians were undefeated in the state tournament. Rock Creed had lost its tournament opener.

The mid-plains regional tournament came to a dramatic, and disappointing conclusion, losing 5-3 to LaCrescent, Minn., and 4-0 to Waupun, Wis. Iola ended the year with a 41-5 record.

4 — State Rep. Ed Bideau, Chanute, died today. He Bob Sharp was 62. Bideau represented Neosho and most of Allen County. He most recently was elected in 2012. Bideau, a farmer and rancher in addition to having a private law practice in Chanute, previously served in the House from 1985 to 1988.

9 — LAHARPE — TLC Garden Center has grown a new addition to its business, a flower shop. Savannah and her husband Levi Flory have opened Flory’s Flowers.

TLC is a family owned business that Savannah took over after her mother passed away in 2006. Savannah has a degree in horticulture from Kansas State University.

19 — Gage Scheibmeir, 8, is recovering from being bitten by a copperhead snake. The snake was poised at the bottom of a trash can and struck Gage as he was carrying out garbage while at Chaparral Lake, near Mound City.

At age 60, Monfort’s rationale is that when “you’re part of a community, I think you need to make an investment or there won’t be a community down the road.”

His and wife Kathy’s investment was to build a new 4,400 square foot clinic to

serve owners of small animals, mainly dogs and cats, and an adjoining structure of the same size where horses and cows may be quartered while being treated.

7 — HUMBOLDT — Thousands of spectators flooded into Humboldt and crowded streets downtown Saturday to see the 56th annual Biblesta Parade.

The parade, nearly an hour long, depicted scenes from the Bible with floats that drew exclamations and spontaneous applause throughout its route.

15 — Humboldt students secured a $200,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation. The money will be used to construct crosswalks and sidewalks and erect reflective signs along the route connecting elementary and secondary schools.

The Iola Register 2013 Year In Review Portland Alley Marathon on Saturday. There were around 90-plus competitors in the second annual race from Iola to Chanute.

Runners were exposed to poor weather conditions early in the morning and had to run into strong winds. The race began at 8:30 in front of Thrive Allen County on the Iola square and ended in Chanute. Half marathon runners ended the race on the Humboldt square.

The marathon is organized by Thrive Allen County and Chanute Regional Development Authority.

26 — Raef Casner, 12, and his family are especially thankful this Thanksgiving.

Earlier this year, a doctor delivered the hard news to his mother, Lea, saying Raef ’s chances of survival were slim if he did not receive a liver transplant — soon.

“You’re looking at three months,” the doctor said on Jan. 22.

Raef was diagnosed with stage II hepatoblastoma, a rare form of liver cancer.

Two weeks later they got the call. A donor had been found. Today, Raef is healthy, active, and back in school.

4 — Rep. Paul Davis, Democratic candidate for governor, visited Iola to talk about the future of Kansas. As the son of two teachers, Davis, 41, holds good schools as a priority for the state.

“Kansas has always been known for its good schools,” he said.

“We’ve always felt it was a moral obligation to provide children with the best education possible.”

In regards to education, Davis expects the State Supreme Court to rule current funding is inadequate. If legislators refuse to follow the recommendation to increase funding to state schools, Davis fears “there’s real potential for a constitutional crisis,” of whose role it is to interpret the state constitution. *****

Roger Young is part-owner of the Colony Diner. Young said the Colony Diner is a central hub for people in town, especially as the lone restaurant in the community. He said there will be plans to rebuild the space as things move forward. The business was fully insured.

7 — BRONSON — The home of Chub and Helen Bolling, Bronson, caught fire and was destroyed on Dec. 5. The couple own Bronson Meat Locker.

According to Cara Thomas, the Bollings' granddaughter and manager of Bolling’s Meat Market and Deli in Iola, the blaze started around 2 p.m. Thursday, the time her grandfather, 74, is usually home taking a mid-day break.

“They lost everything.

My grandfather even lost his wallet,” Thomas said. “A situation like this is unfortunate at anytime of the year but this happening around Christmas is hard.”

A a soup and chili feed to raise funds for the Bollings was at the Marmaton Valley vs. Uniontown game. The proceeds from the feed went to the Bollings.

9 — After 19 years of business Classy Attic is saying farewell to Iola. The shop at 15 E. Madison Ave., will close its doors for the last time on Dec. 31.

“The economy is just not profitable,” owner Sherry Hart said.

Hart started the business with friends Mary Smith and Marsha Burris in July 1994.

They bought Old Country from Kim Strickler.

Hart said it has been tough keeping up with the shopping competition.

The Iola Register 2013 Year In Review space. Welding machines, laser cutters and storage space have filled up the floor of the plant slowly since Joe Works and Roger Baker started the business in 1987.

While it isn’t the only expansion — Mike Mueller, plant manager, said he remembers six expansions since he started in 1999, with more prior to that — it is the largest the company has undertaken. Perhaps it’s a sign of better times across the area, as B&W is one of the largest employers in the area.

“We see the economy turning around, and we want to be ready for that,” Mueller said.

17 — Mothers of Miracles, which has been raising money for the playground since this summer, announced Dec. 16 that a recent pancake feed, coupled with matching funds from Modern Woodmen of America, generated $3,419.37.

That leaves organizers less than $25,000 from their goal of $155,000 to have construction on the playground area begin April 1.

“We’re closer, but we still need donations,” said LeAnn Church, a MOMs member.

18 — Crews on Dec. 17 worked to pour concrete along a new sidewalk, that will run from Cofachique Park to the south side of the Walmart parking lot — approximately 4,000 feet.

An effort to renovate the old Iola Theater to its previous grandeur of the 1930s is being spearheaded by Jim Smith and David Toland. In regards to school funding, Thompson said he didn’t know what level was needed, suggesting that politics were likely to play a large role,

and that leadership in both houses would resist if state aid proposals fall beyond what they think appropriate.

This is the first year that Hicks and her son Roberts, entered a creation into the walk.

“We have always made one around Christmas time at our house,” Hicks said.

The two were looking for a challenge this year and decided to tackle the Woodson County courthouse. Hicks used to be the post master in Yates Center.

This group of young mothers have formed Mothers of Miracles and are working to raise funds for playground equipment that can be used by special needs children as well as other children. The women have paired with Kiwanis to raise $155,000 for the equipment that will be placed in Riverside Park. They are about $24,000 shy of meeting their goal.
