DIPLOMA PROJECT
ATELIER M. ARNABOLDI SS 2020
INSUBRIC ARCHIVE
The project is conceived as a new pole of attraction aimed at connecting two realities: Chiasso in Switzerland and Ponte Chiasso in Italy. The site is located between the Swiss border and an abandoned industrial area in Ponte Chiasso that is divided by the railway. The strategy adopted tries to solve several problems, such as the traffic between the two borders that limits the slow mobility. It was therefore considered, in our atelier strategy, to divert traffic to new customs, thus allowing the creation of wider sidewalks and cycle paths that connect the two borders more fluidly.
A new building used for offices and shops, as well as a civic hall for the citizens of Ponte Chiasso, is located in the now empty area near the road leading to the border. It is placed in the direction of the site beyond the railway to strengthen the connection between the former industrial areas and create a new pedestrian bridge, thought as an extension of the building itself.
The project of a tower, symbol of the Insubric Archive, is conceived as a visitable space from the ground floor to the top. On the ground floor, visitors can see through a glass the archived objects, and then, going up, they can access the library and continue heading to the other floors by observing the objects moving from a walkway to another. The archival material - of architectural, artistic, historical and literal nature - becomes the protagonist and not just a hidden element to the viewers.
Beyond the archive building, there is the rearrangement of the area previously used as a parking lot for trucks: a new slat building is split into three levels, each related to different working areas. Anyone who rent the spaces may use PCs, plotters and any archived material for study purposes, while on top another building host a conference room and meeting rooms.

ATENE - POLYKATOIKIA
This project aims to show the remarkable urban transformation potential of two different districts of Athens, Metaxourgeio and Kerameikos, considering their strategic position and numerous building voids.
Through a series of accurate interventions, always correlated to each other, the aim is to introduce a functional mixitè, from residential to office spaces. These new interventions enhance the existing network of public spaces and preserve the unique spatial, cultural and social complexities of these areas.
The project consists of a building with a residential character and a second connected to the first by an inner courtyard, dedicated to craft activities and easily
convertible from carpentry to an artist’s studio or an art gallery.
The residential building consist of one flat per floor, while on the ground floor there is the carpentry’s office, which allows a glimpse of the new green inner courtyard.
The south-east side, adjacent to another building and therefore to be kept blind in the event of a new, higher construction, is used for the staircase block.
As long as the side is not occupied in height by another taller building, it will be possible to take advantage of the building’s walkway that looks towards the Parthenon on the upper floor.

“IL NUOVO SOPRA L’ANTICO”. A SCENIC SPACE IN ITALY
The theme given by the atelier was to design a scenic space for the Literature Festival in Mantua, Italy, one of the many places characterized by the continuous relationship between old and new.
The site chosen for this individual task was Porto Catena , a place that played a primary role in the past for the fluvial trade of Mantua . This area is now in a state of semi-abandonment, with a marginal role compared to the rest of the city.
The primary idea was giving this space again a role and importance, by orienting the scenic space towards the harbour.
The project is not an invasive intervention, leaving intact the original boundaries. In this way, the project would recall the historical traces of the place and the idea of the original border walls of the harbour.
The new space consists of a thick wall that directs the view inside the port and whose massive presence becomes a protection from the road traffic and containment of the pushing ground. The ground beyond the wall is gradually removed, thus generating the scenic space with its seats. The presence of the wall also becomes a space within which the service areas are located (at the lower level restrooms, storage and dressing room); while at the upper level, a ramp leads to a higher level of the space, where the viewer can observe the scene and the surrounding area, recalling the idea of the theater’s loggia.

VIVAT SAN BERNARDINO
The alpine core of San Bernardino (CH) was the object of this semester atelier, aimed to the regeneration and reuse of some disused buildings in the area.
The development of San Bernardino started in the beginning of the 1970s, becoming in the follow years a renowned holiday resort both in summer and in winter.
Following snow-free seasons and lack of investment led to a slightly reduction of visitors in the early 2000s, even if it was partially offset by other sporting activities.
The project focuses on the reuse and enhancement of Hotel Alba- rella, built in the early ‘70s, which is located in a complex composed by various residential buildings and a covered pool designed by the swiss architect Giampiero Mina.
One of the first thoughts was removing the unnecessary elements, such as balconies, in order to make the building’s shape less massive and more slender.
The rooms were redesigned, giving more attention to windows orientation by adding larger glass walls, instead of the existing ones which limited the view. In this way, the guest could enjoy the view of the valley, both being seated or lying down on the bed.
The building’s height, which prevails the landscape of San Bernardino entire area, has been exploited to create on the upper floors a panoramic space accessible both to the hotel’s clients and visitors.
The direction of the roof ’s pitch was reversed to maximize the penthouse space, improving the perception of space inside the upper floors.

LIGHT THEATERS
In collaboration with FAI-Fondo Ambiene Italiano (IT) and MAD workshop (USA)
The semester was focused on the research of the correlation between the baroque chapels of Sacro Monte of Varese (in Italy) and light; the main purpose was to interpret this relation through the creation of an art installation. Means and methods were chosen by the students.
The team I was part of, studied the phosphorescence as a way of leaving a temporary sign of light on a surface.
Particular attention was given to the analysis of colors and their reaction to darkness when projected on photosensitive support.
Starting from different wave lengths peculiar to each color, it was possible to create a sampling that correlates colors and shades of different light intensity. This allowed us to reproduce the richness and complexity of baroque architecture.
The result of this research is a mise-en-scène where a 1:20 scale model of the XIII Sacro Monte’s chapel is shown to the viewer in three moments.
A phosphorescent powder covered the entire surface of the model, in order to make it light-sensitive.
27
Initially , the model is shown without details.
During the mise-en-scène was placed a red spotlight to avoid the reaction of the powder to the light; this happens because the red color’s wavelength is too long to trigger the phosphorescence. In this way, we could show our model without creating a phosphorescent effect, but allowing us to have the best result subsequently to the projection of colored shapes.
The second phase consists in the projection of the colored shapes on the model’s surface according to the results of the chromatic studies described above.
Finally, in a state of total darkness, it will be possible to perceive the chapel and its reliefs. The project under- lines the value and importance of the volumes and chiaroscuro tones in the 17th century chapels.
The clean alternation between lights and shadows makes architecture dynamic and theatrical, highlighting the drama experienced in this artistic and architectural period.
