JAN DE WET SILVER LAKES CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

In this edition of the Intra Muros we are focussing on Jack Nicklaus, 18 time Major winner and, more relevant to Silver Lakes, the name behind the longest crescent in the Estate. With each edition of the magazine during this year we will be using one of our street names as a theme and focussing on the golfing personality, animal or golf course that the street is named after. The Clubhouse Improvement Project has finally been completed! It took longer than expected and we had several maintenance issues crop up that had to be corrected before the building work could be completed, but the results now speak for themselves. Please enjoy our new facility and let us know what you think. We will be officially launching the new facility over the next month to coincide with the Club Championships, whilst separate events will be held for our corporate golf customers and, most importantly, our residents. The new Café 41 is open for business and offers beautiful views, a varied menu and décor befitting our new facility. It’s hard to believe that this restaurant area originally started out as a humble halfway house! Our new shuttle buses have been operating for a year now and have been providing an essential service

to our employees on the estate. They are especially appreciated during the hot summer days. We believe the routes are now optimised and the shuttles are being efficiently utilised, but feedback on the routes and operating times are always appreciated and considered. The Fibre to the Home project’s planning phase has now been completed, and installation of the fibre rings in the Estate will commence in March. It is expected that the network will be operational and that the fibre will have passed every house in the Estate by June 2016. We will share information on the implementation phases and the areas that will be covered first as soon as they are made available by Telkom. Please check our website and social media pages for updates. I would lastly like to encourage residents to communicate with me should there be any issues you would like to bring to our attention. Please feel free to make an appointment via my assistant Michele on (012) 809-0142 or secretary@ silverlakes.co.za. Regards Jan

Where did the street name Nicklaus come from?

the story of

Jack Nicklaus The significant golfer, designer and philanthropist Jack Nicklaus not only holds the title “Golfer of the millennium” with several publications, but was also honored with a Golden Bear in 2005. Jack, the 76-year-old golf legend, is the holder of 120 professional tournament victories worldwide and holds a record of 18 major championship titles. His legend has not only been built with tournaments and championships, but he was also bestowed with numerous awards such as the PGA Player of the Year Award (five-time winner), the ESPY Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001, The Old Tom Morris Award in 2005 and Architect of the Year in 2014, to name but a few. Jack is the co-chairman of Nicklaus Companies, of which Nicklaus Design has opened over 385 courses around the world. Apart from his thriving business, he has been involved in the design of over 290 golf courses worldwide. These courses have hosted more than 800 professional tournaments and national amateur championships. In addition, Nicklaus Design is in progress of developing and constructing golf projects in 18 different countries. Jack has greatly impacted the golf industry by growing the game. He ran a campaign with women’s golf legend Annika Sorenstam for the inclusion of golf into the Olympic Games; the International Committee has voted to add golf to the 2016 Olympics. He has been recognized for his global impact in golf-course design, marketing, and business licensing as well as for his philanthropic efforts. He and is wife, Barbara, are involved in several charities and charitable activities and support numerous pediatric health care services in South Florida through their Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. As Jack Nicklaus once said, “Achievement is largely the product of steadily raising one’s levels of aspiration and expectation.” Some of this great man’s significant golfing achievements: • • • • •

Nicklaus was the first player to break 270 for four rounds, having done so in 1977 in the Open Championship. Nicklaus made a record five consecutive birdies in the final round of the 1982 US Open. He is one of only two players to achieve a “triple career slam” i.e. winning all four major championships three times in a career; the other being Tiger Woods. Nicklaus played 154 consecutive majors for which he was eligible from the 1957 US Open through the 1998 US Open. Nicklaus holds the record for most wins with six, which is two more than Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods.

Kids play area & mini putt-putt facility with low curved wall

ESTATE MANAGER

Upgrade of Clubhouse Facilities Construction work on the project recommenced after the festive season’s annual Builder’s Holiday. During January/February a number of parts of the works have been completed or are nearing completion. • The new Kids Play Area adjacent to the external seating area of the restaurant has been completed. The height of the curved brick wall between the play area and the 1st T-box has been raised. • The Upstairs Patio has been opened. However, an unfortunate water leak was experienced in the new restaurant. The leak was traced and it was eventually ascertained that it was also from the upstairs pond. Some floor tiles had to be removed and rewaterproofed. The pond was also re-waterproofed and repaired. • Landscaping and the new walkway in front of the restaurant area have been completed and are operational. • The new restaurant & kitchen facilities downstairs – Café 41 – have been refitted. Café 41 has been operational since early February. • The new convenient/deli facility downstairs is to be refitted by the Operator (Café 41). • Landscaping of the planter boxes at the new starter hut building as well as the ramps are in process. • The construction work of the new terraces and the staircase at the swimming pool area has been completed while the paving, security pool fencing and landscaping are in process. • The new golf cart parking and the new golf cart/walkways in front of the new starter hut area as well as at the 10th T-box have been completed and are operational. Landscaping is in process. Some updated images:

CORLIA MATHEWS ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS DIRECTOR

Environmental Report As we are moving into the cooler season where the days are getting shorter and we have to wake up when it is still a bit dark outside, we know we are getting to a season where our plants will start resting. As one takes one’s morning walk, it is views such as can be seen in these photos that make us realise how unbelievably fortunate we are to be living in such a beautiful estate. To be able to walk for more than 10 kilometres without once retracing your footsteps, on a beautiful golf course or along tree-lined streets with beautiful homes…

INTRA MUROS JULY I 2014 (20) DESIGNED BY

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

Concrete balls lining the street have dominated the sidewalks. This is something we are working on. We all have our own opinions and to persuade a home-owner that what he believes to be his right to protect his lawn against possible car tracks is aesthetically off-putting and impacts on all his neighbours’ properties takes time, but we will tackle the sidewalks of Silver Lakes in the new year together with our new corners as soon as they are approved by the City Council. As you would have seen form our environmental schedule published last month, a lot of our maintenance will be done in the course of the winter. This includes taking out some reeds, some new building projects, pruning of trees and roses and getting our gardens ready for the new growing season at the end of the year. It may seem premature to start thinking about the next growing season already, but all the gardeners out there will know what I am talking about – with gardening one has to think ahead, otherwise one misses some very important maintenance issues. For example, if you do not plan in advance for topsoil and lawn, once the new season starts all available stock in the vicinity has been taken and one has to spend more money to get stock form elsewhere. So just to conclude, we are starting with our planning for the winter and new summer season even though our golf course and gardens are looking much better for the fantastic rain we got after the drought of the end of 2015. As already mentioned and discussed in last month’s Intra Muros, our planned projects will be finalised, some of which will even be done by the time this Intra Muros is published: • • • • • • •

• •

After a few delays the restaurant is now ready. The street corners will be built. Lynwood gate will be finished. The sidewalks will be tackled. Some new game species have been obtained in the game reserve. A lot of buck have been caught in the non-game reserve part of Silver Lakes. This will be a continuous process since the game have been around for as long as Silver Lakes has existed and only in the past few years has there been a problem because of the breed -ing and therefore the number of game now living in the golf course vegetation. The infestation of domestic rabbits is a big problem on the estate and will be dealt with in a natural way. Large areas of the game reserve where the veld condition was exceptionally poor have been double seeded and we will con tinue with this project during the next few years until we have pristine veld for our game in the reserve. As much as possible of the exceptional growth of the dam grasses is being removed for the sake of oxygen for the fish since once this lot starts rotting at the bottom of the dam it will become a hazard for all creatures.

New projects: • The ‘Country Club’ concept is being developed even further at the Club with new tennis courts, active children’s play equipment, soccer and cricket nets, etc. • Children’s programs at the club and in the game reserve. • Interaction and projects at the club together with the new tenants, Minas and Helen of Café41. During the course of a month, different maintenance issues are tackled and, as you would have gathered, this year we were fortunate that the drought ‘prevented’ excessive growth of lawns and grasses, but it lead to other problems such as new plants struggling and other plants dying. This was part of the ‘clean-up’ operations after the Christmas break, during which we only have a skeleton staff contingent on the estate.

INTRA MUROS JULY I 2014 (22) DESIGNED BY

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

If you have driven over the hill in the game reserve and looked towards the east and seen the pink field of pom-poms outside our walls, it would have been plain to see just what Silver Lakes could have looked like had we not performed our vigorous eradication of weeds on the estate. Other maintenance on the estate over the past months included the mowing, which is in full progress, where all areas are mowed weekly. All stands were cut during December and January as well as the security fence area, Six Fountains and the Snake Corner. Our flower beds are understandably a daily exercise and in Pebble Beach, for example, weeding is done daily. The new and replanted plants that did not perform well during the drought will need to be replaced, but we will first try and spur them on now that the rains have come. The Gaura or “butterfly plant” will be pruned after flowering in February for flowering again in April. All the flowerbed sides will be maintained and plants added if required.

ment and final walls and artificial grass are coming in during the first weeks of February, so as the restaurant is also opening we will have a new look-and-feel club to take us into the future. Good luck to Helen and Minas and we hope we will have many fruitful years working together! Have a fantastic month and hope to see you walking our pathways and trails and at the Club enjoying some of the fantastic food from Café41! Have a good one. Corlia Mathews – Environmental Director

In Muirfield we planted Ophiopogon and wild garlic up to the road verge to fill up the empty spaces. This is an ongoing exercise. The dump rock where the contractors get in and out of their vehicles will be flattened as temporary ‘paving’ since none of our previous efforts have worked here. We will investigate other options such as reinforced concrete paving in the new year. All the corners planted along with the lawns have been fertilised and are maintained on a weekly basis. Some of these corners will, as you would have gathered form earlier Intra Muros articles, soon become the sites of our new feature signage and planters! At the Clubhouse the roses and plants are doing well. Clean-up after the construction is in progress and should be done by the time of publishing this issue of Intra Muros. All the new plants and grass will also be in by then. At the children’s play area, the last of the equip-

Is Footgolf really a thing? Footgolf has been recognized as a sport since 2009, and it has gained traction in South America and all over Europe. The principle of the game is very simple, and all you need is a pair of feet and a football. Footgolf is the perfect combination between the gentlemen’s game, golf, and the popular sport, soccer. This interesting sport is played with a football on a traditional golf course, 9 or 18 holes, with cups that are 21 inches in diameter serving as the holes. The sport is played in teams of four footgolfers that either walk the course or use golf carts. There is, for the most part of the game, no supervision of a referee and it depends solely on the integrity of each player to abide by the rules and to respect the rest of the players. Sportsman-

ship, discipline and courtesy are a few of the important qualities a player should practise. The player who completes the course in the fewest shots is the winner. It uses the same model as golf; this includes tee boxes, greens, bunkers, hazards, 9 or 18 holes of play and scorecards that display scores for each hole. Although the game is still gaining its popularity in other parts of the world, numerous championships and tournaments are played locally and internationally. The FootGolf worldcup is kicking off in Argentina this year. South Africa is the 14th country in the world to introduce this sport.

The basic rules of the game:

1 2 3

Wear appropriate and professional golf clothing.

Pace yourself and take care of the course.

Your ball must be easily identifiable.

4 5

6 7

Wait for your turn and make sure that your ball will not interfere with others.

The ball must be kicked off 2 meters behind the kickoff tee.

You should kick the ball in one single movement and you are not allowed to push the ball with the bottom of your foot.

The ball must completely come to rest before you play.

losing a key person Protect your business from the devastating impact of losing a key person. The most important asset of any business is its people – especially the key people who are largely responsible for its success. The loss of a key person could cause the demise of a business but having the right insurance, can help you maintain business operations until you can find a replacement, says Marius Spies and Johan Brits, Sanlam Financial Planners at BluCrestBlueStar Financial Advisory Services in Lynnwood. Key people in the business sometimes know the products, processes and clients even better than the business owner. The potential loss of a key person constitutes a serious financial risk in any business. The prolonged absence of someone with a specialist or expert skill – as a result of death or permanent disability – can affect the ongoing operations of your business because the profitability, sustainability and resulting capital value arelargely reliant on their input and output. A key person in a business is someone whose expertise is vital to the success of a business in a specific industry. It could also be someone whose presence increases the creditworthiness of a business or whose absence could shrink a customer base or delay critical projects. This may be the business owner, but could also be other employees. The financial risk to the business could manifest in different ways: • The business may suffer a direct loss because of reduced earnings.

• • •

Loyal clients could become disillusioned and, as a result, start shopping around. Suppliers might introduce stricter payment terms. Employees often start wondering if their jobs are secure, because they see the impact of the key person’s absence on the business.

These risk factors are exacerbated when the business is forced to delay finding a replacement because of the high costs associated with recruitment. However, with the right amount of key person cover in place, a business owner enjoys peace of mind knowing that the business will be able to deal with all the financial problems arising from the loss and replacement of the key person. Insuring key people in a business is a cost-effective solution that can be used to mitigate financial risk. The business owner simply takes out a life policy in the name of the key person. Should the key person die or become permanently disabled, the life insurer pays the proceeds of the policy to the business.

Will your business survive financially when a key person dies or become disabled? If the profitability and continued existence of your business mainly depend on the contributions of key personnel, the loss of such people poses a risk to your business. What’s more, key personnel are usually expensive and scarce. This is where key person insurance can help you. We can guide you through the decisions you need to make to protect your business against financial loss when a key person dies or becomes disabled. THE COOK ON THE CORNER SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS... I grew up in a family of 4 girls, so my dad was outnumbered 5 to 1! As a result, our home and our kitchen was always geared towards what the ladies wanted to eat or where we wanted to go on holiday. I’m sure many people looked in and thought “Poor man! He never even stood a chance” and I’ll admit I’ve laughed about that a few times. But honestly, I think my dad was born to be a father to 4 girls – he has always treated us as ladies, making sure his princesses were well taken care of! I also think that at the end of the day, because he had so many girls in the house, he ultimately won at life. Our home was always filled with baked goods and treats, and with so many hands available and willing to make dinner he never went hungry! We used to treat our parents to anniversary lunches on our lawn for which we’d set up our own little pretend restaurant and then cook them the most random things… They also got multiple breakfasts in bed; anything from crumpets to scrambled eggs! Admittedly, our food has gotten better and better as we got older – practise does make perfect! I remember one morning when we were about 4 years old we gave them scrambled eggs with kiwi fruit for breakfast. I wouldn’t dream of doing that now; and I’m sure they wouldn’t dream of eating it!

Seline van der Wat

Having gotten married recently and having gained many a brother-in-law and nephews in the last while, I’ve learnt a lot about “man-food” in the past year; mostly that there are two golden rules! That there must be a LOT and there must be meat! Man-food doesn’t have to be unhealthy and it sure as peanuts doesn’t have to be fried! What I’ve come to realise is that my boys just enjoy food with a super savoury punch – add some lemon zest, a touch of chilli or curry and make sure there’s plenty of salt and pepper and you’ll turn even the most fussy and elegant burger into man-food.

These burgers below are super delicious – a burger must always be generous and juicy and this one is just that! I’ve removed half of the bun, to make it more friendly and healthy. You can easily serve it in a closed bun; there are no rules!

Open-faced Egg Burgers with a Beer Aïoli (makes 4) Ingredients:

1 onion, finely diced 5ml garlic, crushed 45ml olive oil 10ml crushed black pepper 15ml ground cumin a good pinch of sea salt flakes 500g mince 40g dried apricots, finely chopped 20g raisins 4 mint leaves, finely chopped 2 thyme sprigs, finely chopped 25ml Mrs Balls Chutney 1 slice of bread, cut into crumbs 5 eggs 25g salad leaves 4 Portuguese rolls 125g cucumber (± ½ cucumber) 2 egg yolks 200ml canola oil juice of ½ lemon 1 garlic clove 125ml Heineken beer, optional Our cookbook, TWO By Seline and Leandri, was recently awarded an international Gourmand Award! Get your hands on it before it sells out and morph from home cook to MasterChef! Available at bookstores country wide or on TakeAlot.com for R300, or as an eBook online.

Keep in contact with me on Twitter and Instagram (@SelineVW) or by visiting my website www. EsBySeline.co.za or my MasterChef South Africa page on Facebook.

Method:

1. If using, cook the Heineken beer down in a small saucepan until it reduces by two thirds. This will concentrate the flavour of the beer into a smaller portion of liquid, allowing us to add its flavour to the aïoli. Allow to cool. 2. Add the lemon juice, 2 egg yolks, garlic clove and a pinch of salt and pepper to a blender. Blitz for 20 seconds to combine and then add the canola oil in a slow steady stream until the mixture resembles mayonnaise. Chop the cucumber into little cubes and mix into the mayonnaise by hand. 3. To make the patty, combine the ground cumin, garlic, 15ml of the olive oil, onion, black pepper and sea salt flakes in a pan and fry off for a few minutes to partially cook the onions (5 minutes on a medium heat should suffice). 4. In a separate mixing bowl, place your mince and sprinkle the dried apricots, raisins, mint, thyme, chutney and bread over it. Stir to combine. Add the onions and spices and mix thoroughly. Lastly, add one of the eggs and mix until well combined and evenly distributed. If you used a really big egg, your mixture might be too wet and may require an additional slice of bread. 5. Form 4 generous patties from the mixture and indent with a measuring cup, your hands or a spoon, to make space for the egg! 6. Bring the remaining 30ml of olive oil up to temperature in a medium pan. (We used the same one used to fry the onions in!). Place the formed patties, hole side down, into the pan. Cover with a lid and sear for 3-4 minutes until the patty is cooked 1/3 of the way through. Turn the patties around and crack one of the remaining 4 eggs into each. Add 15ml of water to the pan, cover with the lid again and allow the patty to cook all the way through, ensuring your egg cooks too. The steam in the pan (from the water) will help cook the egg white. 7. Cut the top third off each Portuguese roll, top with a helping of the cucumber and beer aioli, then the cooked patty and then with some of your favourite leaves, herbs or flowers.

SLOW-COOKED EASTER LAMB

Slow-Cooked Easter Lamb Ingredients • 1 garlic bulb, separated into cloves, half peeled and sliced, half unpeeled • 8-10 fresh bay leaves • 3 lemons, cut into quarters lengthways • 2½ kg leg of lamb • 50ml Greek extra virgin olive oil, plus 4 tbsp for the potatoes • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1kg Cypriot potatoes, peeled and quartered lengthways (if you can’t find these, any large, waxy variety is fine – try Desirée) • 140g Greek Kalkidis olives (or other large pitted green olives) • 125ml red or dry white wine

foil and place in the oven. Immediately reduce the oven temperature to 150°C/130°C fan/gas 2. Leave to cook for 4 hrs, skimming the fat from the juices and removing the foil for the final 30 mins of cooking. 4. After 1 hr, put the potato wedges in a large roasting tin, coat them in 4 tbsp olive oil and season well. Roast in the oven with the lamb for 1½-2 hrs. 5. Transfer the cooked lamb to a large piece of foil, wrap tightly and leave to rest for 20-30 mins. Check if the potatoes are cooked (if you need to, turn the oven up to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7 to finish cooking). Add the olives and wine to the pan juices, simmer and keep warm until you are ready to carve. Serve the lamb thickly sliced with the olives, potatoes and Tahini & lemon sauce (see ‘goes well with’), with the meat juices poured over at the last minute.

Spinach rice

Method

Ingredients

1. Heat oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Arrange the unpeeled garlic cloves, 3 bay leaves and the lemon quarters in a large roasting dish and cover with 200ml cold water. Sit the lamb on top, drizzle with the olive oil and rub it in all over. 2. Using a small sharp knife, cut small incisions in the lamb skin, then tuck the remaining peeled and sliced garlic and bay leaves into these slits. 3. Season the lamb well and sprinkle the cinnamon over. Cover tightly with

• 100ml Greek extra virgin olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • 500g baby spinach leaves, washed and finely chopped • bunch dill, finely chopped • 300g long-grain rice • juice from 1-2 lemons

Easter is all about fun and good food...

COCONUT ALMOND CAKE

Method 1. Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and gently cook until softened but not coloured. Add the spinach and half the dill. Cook on a high heat, stirring regularly, until the spinach has wilted down and all the liquid has evaporated. 2. Stir in the rice and add 600ml water, then bring to a boil. Turn the heat right down to a very gentle simmer, cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid and cook for 25-30 mins or until the rice has cooked and absorbed all the water. Give it a stir after 15 mins to ensure even cooking, adding a bit more water if required. 3. When the rice is cooked, stir in the remaining dill, season well, squeeze over the lemon juice to taste, and serve.

Coconut Almond Cake Ingredients: • 1 ¾cups all-purpose flour, plus a bit more for pans • • • • •

2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 2 ½ cups sweetened shredded coconut 6 ounces (1 ½ sticks) unsalted butter, softened, plus more for pans 1 ½ cups sugar

• 3 large eggs • ½ tsp pure almond extract • ¾ cup unsweetened coconut milk

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Butter and flour two 9-inch cake pans, tapping out the excess flour. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and 1 cup coconut in a medium bowl. 2. Cream butter and sugar with a mixer until light and fluffy. Add eggs and almond extract, and beat until incorporated. Beat in the flour mixture in 3 additions, alternating with coconut and ending with the flour mixture. 3. Divide the batter between the prepared pans. Bake for 40-45 mins until golden brown and a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans on wire racks for 30 mins. Invert the cakes onto the racks; let them cool. 4. Trim the flat sides of the cakes with a serrated knife to create an even surface. Dab some frosting in the center of a serving platter or cake stand. Place 1 cake layer, rounded side down, on top of the frosting and spread 1 cup frosting on top. Top with the remaining cake layer, flat side down. Spoon ¼ cup frosting into a piping bag fitted with a small star tip and reserve it. Working quickly, spread the remaining frosting over the entire cake. Pipe a decorative garland around the circumference of the cake with the reserved frosting. Press piped spring flowers gently into the frosting to decorate if desired. Mound the remaining 1 ½ cups coconut around cake. 5. Using a wooden skewer as a guide, cut the cake into slices about 2 inches thick. Cut each slice in half, vertically, and serve.

FISHING

Fishing Club News Best wishes for 2016. My wish is for all of us to become more accomplished fishermen, and remember, IT IS NOT ABOUT HOW MANY FISH WE CATCH, BUT HOW MANY FISH WE RELEASE…… Just a few things I would like to touch on: Membership: There is no need to renew your membership for 2016. We do have some reserve funds in the kitty, some of which we will spend in 2016, be that on excursions, info evenings or to purchase some fish for stocking purposes… Any proposals are most welcome. Areas where fishing is allowed: The HOA have decided that fishing from the dam wall in phase 3 will in future be allowed. The area allocated for this purpose is the stretch between the eastern spillway and along the bank where one will find trees, park benches and waste bins. Do not drive to where you wish to fish, but rather park in one of the open areas between the houses and walk a few yards to your

fishing spot. I was there only last week, casting flies at rising fish, and it is very quiet and peaceful… However, I was appalled to find some fishing line just left on the grass. HEALTH

Substance Abuse

What is Substance Abuse? This is a question that has puzzled people for the longest time, which continues to do so and will in all likelihood continue to do so for a long time. The abuse of substances stretches pretty far back and it has always, throughout its story, brought nothing but pain and loss to everyone involved. Substance abuse has also been studied from almost every possible angle, including medically, psychologically and spiritually, and everyone in these fields has an opinion. In each field there have been endless studies as to the causes of addiction. These range from genetic disposition and mental disorders right through to possession. The various treatments for substance abuse vary even more, ranging from medication and psychotherapy to prayer. The fact still remains: where there is addiction, there is chaos and loss. Addiction remains an anomaly in the human condition and is popularly referred to as a disease in the sense that there is no cure. This can be understood as the relapse rate is far higher in comparison to the recovery rate. But the question still needs to be asked: How do we deal with this issue? The arguments that can be made medically, psychologically and spiritually all have some degree of merit and the arguments between the three have been raging since time immemorial. I personally do not have any major degrees and I most certainly am no doctor, but I am uniquely qualified in regards to substance abuse as I was an addict. I once attended the funeral of a young man who had lost his life to heroin and I couldn't stop asking myself, ‘What was it that had killed him?’ The obvious answer is that the drugs had killed him, but it didn't feel as though this answer

had satisfied my need to know. Then it hit me. Thinking over the time that I had known this young man, I couldn't help but realise that it wasn't so much the drugs but rather the consistent and persistent pattern of decisions that inevitably led to his end. Looking back at my own life I realised that my addiction was only a consequence of the choices that I had made. Here is one example that comes to mind. A person consistently has a headache and no matter how much medication, psychotherapy or prayer is administered, the headache doesn't go away… but when someone realizes that this person thinks he can run through walls, the cause of the headache is revealed. So do we treat the headache or the cause? In this example the addiction would be the headache and the irrational belief system would be the cause. I’ve stayed sober for coming on 10 years now, got married, had 3 kids and live a life of purpose. Am I lucky? Have I beaten the disease? I believe that I chose to stop believing that I can run through walls and started living in the reality of the moment and accepted responsibility for my actions and choices and that this has been a major contributor to who and where I am today. So, to answer the question, I can only surmise in my experience that addiction is a consequence of choices and beliefs - beliefs about yourself, your community and your understanding of a rational reality.

The Perfect Easter Garden March is the start of autumn, the time when the earth starts to get ready for the winter lying ahead. To follow are some plants and flowers to help you get your garden ready to have a beautiful place to hide your Easter eggs this Easter. Easter is also a time for family gatherings and fun in the sun, and we will help you prepare your garden for that perfect family fun day. If you love plants like the Namaqualand daisies, sweet peas, poppies, foxgloves, hollyhock and larkspurs, you should not be scared to sow. These plants are very easy to manage as long as you follow the instructions on the packets when sowing them.

Namaqualand daisy The Namaqualand daisy is also known as the African daisy. Some of the family of this daisy are sunflowers, blackjacks and cosmos. This plant has beautiful orange flowers with long, slim stems. They need full sun to open and they are known for following the direction of the sun. Selected forms of the Namaqualand daisy are available in different colours like orange, cream, yellow and salmon. The daisy is not only drought tolerant and the perfect plant for a low-maintenance garden, but it is also beautiful and lightens up your garden and gives it a stunning finish.

Sweet peas Sweet peas are beautiful and gorgeous smelling flowers. They are easy to plant and can be sowed into small pots. Annual sweet peas usually only last one season whereas everlasting sweet peas can flower year after year. To speed up the process in the sowing of sweet peas you can soak the seeds in tepid water, which rehydrates them. It is not essential, but it definitely helps the plant to grow faster. Sow the sweet peas about 1cm deep, cover with soil and water well. You will have a variety of colour to look at when buying sweet peas as they come in blue, pink, purple, red, white and yellow.

Poppies Poppies are known as common cornfield weed. They are popular and attractive and can be found in home gardens and open fields. They are available in many varieties of colour and in many parts of the world. Poppies are easy to grow and long-lasting. Planting poppies can also be great if you love cooking and baking as they carry the poppy seeds used for it. Are you a bird lover? No problem. The poppy seed also works well for your bird feeder. For the medical world it is beneficial as some can be used to make medicine such as codeine, morphine and opium. Poppies symbolize both tragedy as well as new life. This symbolization came from the battlefields of France, which had many poppies at that time.

Foxgloves Foxglove flowers are beautiful and grow on long stems. They have a cluster of blooms in the form of elegant tubes. Foxgloves come in a variety of colours like white, lavender, yellow, pink, red and purple. They thrive in full sun to partial shade to full shade; it all depends on the summer heat.

Namaqualand daisy

Foxgloves grow best in well-drained soil. When planting foxgloves there are some things to consider like whether you are going to use them as cut flower. Using foxgloves as cut flowers decreases the reseeding of the flower; if not, it tends to reseed abundantly. If you want your foxglove to grow the next year, you can leave the last flowers to dry out and drop seeds for the next growth.

Hollyhock Sweet peas

The hollyhock flower is a very well-known and attractive flower, which you will probably find in most gardeners’ home gardens. It has a vertical element to it, which looks beautiful when towering out on top of the garden. Hollyhocks need both full sun as well as moisture to bloom beautifully. The soil must be well drained and rich. When planting the hollyhock flower, it is important to know that it doesn’t have to be planted deep; it can be planted right below the soil. Planting in about 2 feet apart is the perfect distance for the hollyhock. Caring for the hollyhock takes minimum effort, but you do need to know that they are short-lived and there are different ways to extend their lifespan like cutting the stems to the ground or removing some flowers as they fade.

Poppies

Larkspur The larkspur flower is a beautiful, tall flower that most gardeners plant year after year because they are so easy to grow. The care for the larkspur is simple when the flower is official. The one important thing to know about planting a larkspur is that it needs a cold period before it can begin to grow. Fortunately, there are ways to chill your garden or pots before planting the seeds. You can chill it for two weeks or so before planting. It would be a great idea to wait for some rain or a few colder days if you are thinking of planting the larkspur flower in your garden bed. This flower does not like to be moved, so you should plant it where you know it will be suitable for the flower during its lifespan. Larkspur flowers need to be planted about 10 to 12 inches apart to give the roots enough space to develop. Remember to water them occasionally if there are some dry periods.

Foxglove

Hollyhock

If you are more of an ‘herbs and spices’ garden person, you can plant some of the following this autumn: Parsley (Flat, Italian or Curled) Sage Rosemary Thyme Chives Lavender Cilantro Mint

Origami Crane The Japanese developed origami as a form of art. Cranes were the first origami to be taught in 1797. Before that there were only oral instructions that could tell you how to fold an origami crane. It became a popular children’s hobby in England. I thought I’d share the instructions with you so you can also master the folding of a crane origami.
