   in 1987, Toronto-based Flora Di Menna Designs (FDM) has garnered numerous awards for excellence in design for luxury residences, show homes and suites, corporate offices, sales centres and public spaces. FDM’s approach is to treat every project individually, so that every design is tailored to the specific client and works within their budget and scope. Westwood Luxury Estate Residence involved a collective team working together in creating a meditative calm throughout the property, from the entry gates and front courtyard all the way through to the backyard oasis. The project’s design began after ground was broken and framing had started as the clients felt the original layout would not function to their specifications. FDM redesigned the floor plan and relocated rooms and walls accordingly.

Although the clients wanted to maintain the sense of grandeur and openness that is possible with a home of over 12,500 square feet with 13 foot ceilings, they also wanted to create intimacy and human scale. FDM’s brief was to make each space function individually and within the overall floor plan to ensure a smooth transition between formal and informal areas of the home. The company also provided conceptual drawings for the exterior hard surface landscaping. Balance and symmetry from the front doors overlooking the yard was maintained with proper space planning, appropriate lighting, substantial built-in cabinetry and a material and colour palette that was consistent throughout. These four foundational elements work together to connect all areas, regardless of function or formality.

  , Eagles Nest Golf Club wasn’t living up to the high standards set by the exceptional Doug Carrickdesigned golf course. The club was attracting a host of sports celebrities, musicians and Hollywood stars but its design and décor did not reflect the phenomenal golf course. The corporate board decided to commission FDM to update the club while maintaining its well-established ambience and to make each renovated space multifunctional. Contracted to create the hospitality space required for top-drawer golf events, charity balls, weddings and banquets, FDM selected only the highest quality and most durable materials that would stand up to the high traffic and activity of a thriving golf club. For example, solid quarter-sawn, hand-scraped

oak hardwood floors, leathered finish on granites, modern chrome light fixtures, cowhide and leather upholstery and natural wood and stone materials. The layout and location of the additional spaces provides both privacy and convenience to guests. Upon completion of the project, the owners found that the fiscal revenue surpassed all expectation with facility bookings doubling since the redesign. The new platinum star concierge area and the updated restaurants and lounges have also generated income above expectations. Apart from the appeal of extra revenue, the client derives a great deal of pleasure and enjoyment from the new look that is more contemporary, yet doesn’t detract from the comfortable and established ambience.

 E G H; Grid IQ Innovation Centre is a state-of-the-art, 200,000 square feet facility in Ontario. The $40 million is designed to improve the efficiency, reliability and security of the world’s electrical grids. One of the most innovative areas of the facility is the Innovation Customers Experience Centre. This allows customers to take an interactive, immersive look at GE’s full suite of energy management tools on a 60 foot video wall. FDM was contracted to provide a complete interior design package to bring the new facility to life plus all four floors of office space, common spaces and amenity spaces. The company conducted extensive research in order to fully appreciate the products on offer and then design the appropriate backdrops for the experience.

The aim was to create an environment that would perpetuate GE’s vision and brand of renewable energy, smart technology and efficiency. Complex concepts were simplified through the use of graphics, props and AV equipment throughout the project. The floorplan was designed to expedite traffic flow from space to space but also to inspire group discussion and creativity and to encourage an interactive pursuit of energy solutions. Movement of the 580 staff members was considered in the traffic flow throughout the meeting and common areas. Materials used in the project reflected the commercial and industrial designation of the complex but were honed and refined for comfort. Bright, energising colours and patterns were used to reflect the flow of energy and lighting was used creatively on signage, display panels and feature walls.

Parque Centro is the second phase of Davisa’s project to develop a total of 32 hectares in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. The

first one was to give the city a large shopping centre of 44,000m of retail space plus a cinema complex. Now the award-winning Parque Centro is creating a new mixed-use expansion on the site’s remaining 16 hectares. Respecting the area’s cultures and history, the development is inspired by the sarape, a traditional garment typical of Mexico and particularly Saltillo. Made from multiple coloured thread, their designs are unique and have been reflected in Parque Centro’s logo, marketing and landscape design. The project focuses all its energies on satisfying its target market to ensure a sustainable development goal. It will offer a variety of quality services such as open spaces, vertical and horizontal housing, gastronomic dining spaces, educational, corporate and healthcare spaces as well as full service hotels of the highest standards. Parque Centro is also considering the development of a second mall

with a fully-open concept to house well-known fashion companies. One of the development’s primary challenges was to influence consumers into opting for this new urban style of living within a compact city. The use of vertical housing and condominium style apartments is also a whole new concept in Saltillo and so had to be introduced in an appropriate manner. Davisa is focused on creating a compact city with a perspective on simple pedestrian mobility, higher density public transportation and a mixture of land uses to meet the needs of daily life. Ensuring orderly growth with a modern architectural style, Parque Centro will connect landscapes with commerce, providing a new park in the town. The project’s landscape design is being developed in two phases. The first constitutes the main park area and is made up of the urban beach, master kiosk (a three-level, open

sided building under a pergola, complete with terrace), shaded areas and an enormous green. Phase two is inspired by the first and has water mirrors reflecting the project and allowing children to interact with nature. Both phases provide outdoor spaces where people can interact, socialize and enjoy concerts, events, outdoor cinema, sports and many other leisure activities. Parque Centro will include the very latest in technology, materials, architecture, landscaping and sustainability to provide its residents, occupiers and visitors with a world-class compact city in which to live, work and relax. By applying all the benefits of Saltillo such as its varied vegetation, exquisite gastronomy, interesting culture, wonderful climate and, above all, human warmth, Parque Centro has become a modern protagonist for the city; at all times respecting its traditions, history and values.

Full enjoyment of the Los Angeles climate, fragrance, splashes of colour and tranquil, green foliage were all integrated meticulously within the landscape design.

Costa Azul

Costa Azul (or ‘Blue Coast’) is a new high-rise development inspired by the Atlantic Ocean. This modern and luxurious 168-apartment project is located in Petropolis, one of the most exclusive and exciting districts in Natal in which to live, work and play. The biggest challenge was to find the land to acquire for residential development in such a popular area. Ritz-G5 however managed to purchase the land due to its strong local contact network and excellent reputation. Its prime hilltop position complements its remarkable design statement with views of Newton Navarro Bridge, the beach and ocean. RBN’ - interior design project involves the offices of Coimmsa, a company which produces metal racks and containers for the automotive industry. Located in Apocada, a high-density industrial suburb of Monterrey which is part of the state of Nuevo Leon, the area hosts thousands of medium and large-sized companies. These firms are not only responsible for the economic development of the region but also crucial to fulfill the industrial needs of national and international markets. Coimmsa operates both nationally and internationally and has a diverse group of

stakeholders. Therefore, the interior design of its offices needed to convey to users the sensation of being in an international, innovative, professional and solid company. Great emphasis also had to be placed on meticulous attention to detail. Following the company’s operating philosophy of in-house design and manufacture, URBN proposed the use of steel and concrete as the interior design project’s principal materials. All the design elements and finishes were also designed to be made ‘in situ’ with a strong focus on the smallest detail. For example, all concrete floors were cast and all steel floors were manufactured and welded while in place.

The wall’s concrete plates of grey and red were also produced on site in a production line using resin moulds. The idea of combining different materials, rust coloured concrete floors, steel elements in natural and rusted tones and the elegance of light coloured wood and neutral tones of concrete walls attracted the client’s attention and ultimate approval. The mixture of finishes and materials proved to be crucial for this concept to be chosen as the final design. This interior design project is innovative in different ways. The first innovation took place in the rusting process of the steel plates. The conventional rusting process

requires time for the steel to rust and it also lacks control in its process as the natural oxidation is unpredictable. In order to reduce rusting times and to control the process, URBN, in conjunction with a chemical engineer, developed a chemical substance that accelerated the process and then stopped it to control the appearance of the final finish. Another important innovation was that a small concrete slab plant was installed on site. This enabled URBN to design and manufacture every single slab with different colours and textures giving the project a unique look which no other company has managed to achieve.

Las Piedras is Carla Bechelli Architects’ award-winning project in Los Castanos, an enclosed neighbourhood inside Nordelta. This gated community is made up of several neighbourhoods in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. The client’s requirement was to develop a medium density housing development of 125-130 units with one to three bedrooms and

a single parking space. Common areas include an exterior pool and outdoor space while other leisure amenities are already provided by Nordelta. The properties were designed as a mixture of small and medium-scale villas to merge with their surroundings. They were designed in a terraced shape to widen the overall inner space of the project and give the units enhanced natural sunlight and 180 degree views for their top levels. Organically scattered around a beautiful central park, all villas are given wide views from their private gardens and terraces. Building heights and density increase as the urban plan moves away from the central lake. This arrangement was conceived as being similar to rings rippling outwards from around the lake.

   at BT Arquitectos has over 20 years of combined experience. Its award-winning hotel interiors’ project is for Sortis Hotel, Casino & Spa in Panama City’s financial district. The mixed-use development comprises 460 hotel units, offices, business units, a casino and sports bar and a recreational area with restaurant, pool, terrace and spa. The hotel presented a challenge due to the magnitude of the design – an area of approximately 117,263m – and also because of the diversity of uses which required a coordinated multidisciplinary team throughout the whole process. The interior design of Sortis seeks to grant a dynamic experience; one that goes from luxury and elegance to comfort and warmth, creating a

vibrant environment full of energy for global and local visitors. The word Sortis comes from the Latin sors, which means randomness, luck or destiny. Thus the interiors’ concept is taken from the symbol of the four-leaf clover which represents the brand’s identity. This symbol has been used as a design element for decorative patterns, walls and fabrics in the hotel’s lobby, guest rooms, casino and restaurants. Contemporary style is a tendency in Sortis’ interiors, expressed by a fusion of simplicity and edge, using simple forms and ample and luminous spaces. In order to create this understated yet elegant and vivacious ambience, BT has incorporated a neutral colour palette ranging from grey to dark brown contrasted with bright hues like yellow and purple.

 P H A was established in Buenos Aires in 2006 to provide architecture, interior and furniture design and art direction. The company’s projects range from developing urban residential interiors and houses, to corporate offices, hotels and restaurants. Paula Herrero has presented two latest award-winning interior designs. The first, House on the Slope in Buenos Aires, involved the studio teaming up with the architecture and landscape studios already working on the 1940’s house. The main aim was to recover its original soul while adding contemporary art and ageless furniture. The interiors were given a monochrome continuity on walls, ceilings, doors and windows with uniform light-coloured wood flooring featuring in every room. By working on this essential bareness,

Paula Herrero created a diaphanous and contemporary interior in a house with over 50 years of history. The second successful project was a full-floor apartment in Palermo requiring complete design intervention. The clients were a young couple moving into their first home together who expressed a wish for the apartment to be transformed into their ‘bunker in the city’. An inspiring existing factor was an enormous split-level front facing reception room. Paula Herrero designed this space with a geometric mural and this triggered a series of decisions in which the repetition of straight lines became constant. This is apparent in the design of the bookcases with their predominantly horizontal lines, the Foscarini Behive pendant lights, Acapulco chairs and stylish V bench.

  , Estudio Felli specializes in creating a synthesis between the two disciplines of architecture and interior design. With every project undertaken, the company strives to tailor its designs to suit the individual needs of each client. The client’s brief for the award-winning Palladian Villa in Nordelta near Buenos Aires, called for an impressive building with a number of specific necessities. One of the main priorities was to create a clear division between the villa’s extensive social areas and its more intimate living spaces. Inspiration for the Venetian-style villa was sought from Palladio’s Villa Rotonda and, although the proportions and number of columns are different, other facets are faithfully represented. These include isolating the façade

and the columns, presenting them as the culminating aspect of the space when climbing the villa’s steps. A large entertaining terrace ends with a circular balustrade that forms a balcony offering a panoramic lake view. Set back on either side of this central terrace are two detached arcades set at an angle and featuring galleries. One frames the solarium and pool which flows freely towards the lake and establishes continuity between the two water elements. A courtyard of honour surrounded by arcades constitutes a striking, austere, plant-less enclosure that contrasts with the surrounding vegetation. This internal area allowed Estudio Felli to express its own stylistic language without clashing with the neighbouring properties.

Built around a green but also urbanized environment, Natura is presented as a distinctive, innovative and design product. The development consists of 128 apartments surrounded by a central lake with a dimension of 12,327m. It is situated in the well-known neighbourhood of Parque Miramar and

Carrasco, both of which have shown an increasing demographic growth in the last few years. Natura is part of a large urbanism project named Lagos, complementing the supply of urban land. It has been created to meet the natural demand of citizens in this area who are inclined towards standard apartments with a natural environment and a lake view. Ponce de Leon’s design for Natura meets the client’s brief requiring that the development should stand out without imposing itself on the surrounding suburban landscape. The project provides excellence in design and execution as well as functionality. Maximum occupancy is achieved for residential purposes while also adhering to the strict requirement of providing the largest possible green areas on the site for leisure and recreational use.

 A D I. is a firm of Barbados based architect Peter Sandiford. Its work is best characterized as a fusion of the principles of the eastern philosophy of Feng Shui and the unique architectural sensibilities of the Caribbean region. Shirley House is an award-winning commercial restoration and renovation project by Habitats. This mid-19th century colonial building was selected to house the new offices of Globe Finance Inc. The client’s design criteria and brief required reclaiming the building to accommodate the maximum amount of offices while maintaining a habitable

work environment. This involved removing the apex at the rear of the building to create another split-level floor for the offices on the second floor. Restoring this 200 year-old property was like reviving a piece of history as it is listed with the Barbados National Trust and located in close proximity to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A central feature of its meticulous restoration is the use of coral render and lime wash which allows the two-foot thick coral stone block walls to breathe and prevents mould from developing on the inside face. Overall, the final renovated structure has a modernity balanced by the classic elegance of the original colonial style.

    architecture company Queiroz &Andrade, this award-winning country house is in Sairé, Brazil. Casa Thina was created for a visual artist and her partner and collaborator. As they had lots of family and friends visiting and occasional exhibitions of work, the property’s design had to be accessible and open to accommodate large numbers of people. The chalet had to fit within budget hence efficiently constructed. On the ground floor, they required a living room integrated with a dining room and kitchen, plus a toilet. They also needed four bedrooms, three with individual bathrooms. The couple wanted to have terraces integrated with the garden to

enjoy al fresco living and to take into account the plot slope when designing the building. The concepts also had to be harmonic with the landscape with an uncomplicated design and feature locally sourced materials. As the plot is relatively small, measuring 500m, increasing the height of the house allowed lateral gaps between Casa Thina and the neighbouring (future) buildings giving the perception of a bigger home and increasing the visibility from inside to the outside, since the plan layout diagonals further extend the spatial perception. This also allows the contemplation of the local environment, mirroring the mountains in the surrounding valley where different levels create impressive viewing points during sunrise and sunset.

T  is a boutique interior design firm which provides highly personalized residential design services to an international client base. The company works to bridge the gap between a project’s full potential and the boundaries imposed by the realities of life, believing that a great design is the culmination of a relationship between a designer, a client and the space. The Box, an award-winning project by P&T, is located in New York City’s Garment District which is the centre for fashion production and design. This unique 4,500 square foot apartment with a 500 square foot terrace is in a 12-storey, pre-war Art Deco building constructed in the 1920s.

The aim of P&T’s design was to maintain as much as possible of the historical elements of the space while upgrading it to provide all modern life necessities. A challenge was to ensure ample entertaining space while not scarifying any of the closed intimate spaces. This was accomplished through space versatility and a game of ‘concealment and revelation’ through a multitude of pivot and pocket doors, numerous glass partitions and through playing with volume vs. void and visual vs. physical barriers/windows. Warmth is incorporated through black gloss wood-panelling as well as furnishings and accessories that revisit the European ‘grandmother’ style by updating it with a contemporary twist.

Due to the experience as real estate developers, the firm also acts as consultants and strategic partners for other investors who desire to develop their own real estate projects. The company has expertise in the design of commercial and residential buildings for different income groups, having built projects throughout Chile. Lofts Yungay II is Rearquitectura’s awardwinning apartment building located on a hillside in the outskirts of the World Heritage Area of Valparaiso, Chile. One of the client’s

main objectives was to develop a new contemporary building that could blend into the city’s historic landscape. The building was to have 20 apartments, eight parking lots and 20 storage rooms. Apartments were to feature one or two bedrooms, be designed for young couples or single people and have a view. A stepped terrace design was approved as it had a well-balanced mixture of contemporary and vernacular architecture. This gave the project identity and a unique image that was highly attractive. The design also provided a view from all apartments and minimized circulation areas. By designing two or three storey apartments, a lift was unnecessary as from the main entrance users only need to go up or down one floor to enter their apartment.

 Z A, an accomplished team of architects based in Polanco, Mexico has been successful in winning an award with its project Rancho del Arbol. Strategically located to maximise views of its predominantly forested and mountainous surroundings near the foothills of Sierra de las Cruces and La Marquesa, its design is based on a box set of simple shapes. These generate aesthetical rotated volumes in such a way that enable full advantage to be made of the site’s natural beauty. By creating functional spaces in this way, they serve as a frame to the landscapes each area offers. The land area totals 11,000m and comprises a recreation house, stables, horseriding tracks, green areas and slopes. It features

one particular tree of importance in terms of size and shape and this became the inspiration for the property’s name, Rancho del Arbol. The residence area is laid out in two stories with the ground floor as social space and the first floor as an entirely private zone. The project’s most important requirement is its façade as keeping a mountainous view and allowing natural light to illuminate spaces were of paramount importance to the client. The purpose was to create a dwelling for leisure use which could fuse harmoniously with the natural scenery without compromising the comfort provided by a good architectural distribution of spaces for living and entertaining. The result is a striking residence resembling sculptural artwork within its surrounding ranchland.

With an innovative, cutting edge vision to urban sustainable residential design the project features a highly articulated façade with a vertical landscape system that enables plants and vines to grow on the edge of the building.  MG & Associates (EM&A) is an architectural design and land planning firm based in the Republic of Panama. The first of EM&A’s award-winning projects is Paseo del Mar in Buenavetura, an exclusive beach community on the Pacific coast of Panama. This private lot of 4,800m is surrounded by single-family residences and so the goal was to integrate the four apartments’ building design into the neighbourhood to appear as if they were a single house. The installation of large windows in the living area allow for merging of the exterior and interior space so that there is no firm boundary between ‘outside’ and ‘inside’. Instead there is a feeling of one continuous space with fabulous views towards the ocean and gardens.

Towerbank Headquarters in El Dorado, Panama involved a 5,800m plot surrounded by busy commercial enterprises yet connected to a quiet residential neighbourhood. The client wanted a design of extraordinary quality that could change the impersonal and distant relationship between bankers and clients. The sculptural and minimalist form of the building reinforces the bank’s distinguished image, portraying a modern and friendly company which is reliable to both its clients and surroundings. In terms of the interior design, an open concept plan was utilized to express a transparency of operations to users, changing the typical appearance and distribution of a banking environment.

 J L A has gained valuable experience working with leading architectural firms for over 20 years. VB House is an award-winning project by his company located in a new subdivision called San Nicolas in Montevideo, Uruguay. This building’s 1,000m plot faces two different streets and slopes a full five metres from one to the other. Priority was given to the views and orientation so that the occupants, a couple and their three daughters, could enjoy the panorama all day long including the sunset. Across from the lower street elevation is a beautiful tree-filled park which cannot be developed. The client therefore requested lots of windows facing the park to let in natural light and to highlight the park’s peacefulness

and beauty. The aesthetics are very important and so Jose Luis Andre Architects designed it with an open foyer featuring stairs and a bridge with glass railings. In order to realise an eco-friendly design with superior thermal performance both in winter and in summer, the roof and eaves were designed with substantial overhangs. Due to their specifically engineered dimensions, they provide shade in summer, allow the sun to enter in winter and also protect the house from driving rain. Projected to give the impression that they are floating over the ground, they are aesthetically pleasing while having significant functionality. Nature has also been integrated as an important overall aspect of the property’s design.

 D C is a versatile, ultra-luxury residential developer with offices in Cold Spring Harbor, the Hamptons, New York and Palm Beach, Florida. Founded in 1980, Kean has constructed numerous national award-winning projects and is recognised as one of the country’s most prominent, premier builders. The hillside property named ‘oZ’ posed numerous construction challenges in terms of its foundation work, surrounding trees, utilities and the geo-thermal system. The structure’s vast size (28,000 square feet over four levels with a 35 foot deep core), the confines of the seven-acre hillside parcel it is built into and the zoning requirements of a conservative village in the heart of the Gold Coast of Long Island were of further concern.

Exteriors literally proved a construction jigsaw puzzle. The detailed facades are ‘woven’ mosaics of masonry, metal flashings, carpentry and elaborate Arris hip roofs comprised of more than 40,000 imported handmade clay roof tiles. As the property’s indoor pool is 35 feet underground, a system had to be designed and implemented to drain any amount of excess water it might accumulate. This superb villa takes full advantage of its dynamic, natural setting and bears the noble hallmarks of another era, despite its actual age. Kean’s inspired definition of a modern masterpiece clad in antique oak and featuring intricate millwork conceals the latest hightech geo-thermal and computer systems for luxurious 21st century living.

  Alison Antrobus and Ruby Ramirez joined forces in 2011 to form Antrobus + Ramirez. Together they are continuing a path of innovation in all fields of design, such as private residences, real estate property development, retail and hospitality. They present stunning projects such as the following award-winning example. Ocean House is located on the prestigious strip of Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida. The boutique property had gone through several incarnations with its start as the Walburne Hotel. It was then converted into a condominium with several design iterations gracing its corridors but all the while maintaining a nod to its historical past as the Walburne Hotel. The client’s brief was simple,

to create a mansion on the beach. With only 18 units to speak of, the scale of the tower was ideal for this purpose. There were many existing conditions that tested Antrobus + Ramirez’s design skills. The first and most important was the mandate by the Miami Beach Historical Preservation Board to keep existing elements of the hotel. Thus, in developing the design approach, it was decided to create a grand staircase to demarcate the ending of the old and the transition into the new. It was designed in keeping with the Art Deco era in which the building was originally created using motifs hand curved by ironworkers. Living spaces have been given a familiar and home-like feel with a nod to the relaxed lifestyle of Miami Beach and the subtlety of sheer luxury.

Santa Fe Chic in New Mexico was a 19-month project to transform a dated holiday home into a contemporary yet elegant family home. This hacienda style property overlooks Santa Fe Opera House and was a rough diamond waiting to be sculptured with expertise and style. Whilst the owners wished

to bring the property up to date, they also wanted it to remain true to its past influences and retain the feel of a hacienda estate. Samuel Design Group’s successful design scheme was for a simple, uncluttered plan that celebrates the project’s unique sense of ‘place’. While having a real connection to the stunning mountain views, it provides a refuge from its sometimes intense environmental elements. Finished with New Mexican buff sandstone, hand forged iron and exquisite textiles, the furniture and detailing has complemented the overall theme. Both stylish and practical, the interiors have also been enhanced by improved, energy efficient lighting with a Lutron system to suit the ambience accordingly.

  , Rosehaven Homes has created properties with innovative exteriors and interior design that have led to numerous awards for architectural and design excellence. The Randall Residences in the heart of downtown Oakville, Ontario is a prime, multi-award winning example. The project was launched as a premium luxury condominium development with an exclusive offering of only 36 suites. The challenge was to create residences that exude elegancy and luxury, while still maintaining a legible floorplan for the purchaser to review and choose the suite most suited to their liking. A digital version of the ‘coffee table style’ brochure was produced to allow prospective purchasers to zoom into particular layouts.

Specific attention was given to detail in the exterior elevation, features and finishes to cater to a niche market of purchasers. The exterior detail was inspired by the timeless Beaux Arts movement and the elegance of Paris, with a focus on the grand scale of construction. By using symmetry and balance combined with a commitment to classical tradition, grand, yet understated, style is brought to the building’s façade. No expense was spared with interior materials and finishing. Living spaces feature wide gallery hallways, soaring ceiling heights, rotunda foyers, engineered hardwood and slab marble flooring. Within walking distance of Lake Ontario, restaurants, art galleries, shops and Oakville’s Yacht Club, Randall Residences offer all the comforts of downtown living with the elegance, exclusivity and security of a stylish private residence.

M A,  well-established firm of architects based in Morelos, Mexico was commissioned to design an outstanding house for a family of five. The client wanted a house that would look modern and different from the general properties in the exclusive residential development in Boca del Rio. The family hobby is watersports and so the plot of land chosen for their home includes an open front to the river. View, orientation and openness were DM’s three major design aims. The architectronic scheme is based on a north oriented, L-shaped house intersected by a curved wall that exactly follows the sun’s path, from east to west. This causes a permanent shadow on

the north façade and constant light on the south side. The interiors remain mysterious and detached from the street but totally open on to the house’s green areas. These dynamic living spaces can be adapted in order for them to be completely closed or entirely open. While the weather in the area is mostly wet and warm, there is a heavy rain season in summer and autumn and a windy season in winter. Hence, the building’s design was expected to respond to these extreme season changes. It was also important that the house could coexist with the exterior, integrating with it in good weather and isolating itself from it during bad weather.

The site for the company’s award-winning Walden Heights Community consists of a parcel of land totaling 2.87 hectares. ADAL’s client’s objective was to develop an excellent quality multi-generational housing project to meet the target density of 160 units per hectare. This integrated community development for senior citizens will be sensitive to the requirements of local planning guidelines and fulfill Municipal Development policies. These

include unique neighbourhood character, high quality living enhancements, well connected pedestrian-friendly and transit supportive networks and community safety. Phase A is an addition to the existing longterm care facility with a dementia wing of 125 units; Phase B is an affordable seniors’ fourstorey condominium building with 85 units; and Phase C is a four-storey rentable apartment for seniors, their family and young adults with 72 to 80 units. The facility includes large multi purpose areas for craft, games, fitness and many other activities for the enjoyment of residents and a Child & Adult Care Centre thus creating a ‘community within a community’. The chosen layout considers the need for maximum sunlight penetration and exposure for all units as well as views over the open landscaped central courtyard. Both of which are very important factors for seniors’ quality of life.

  S has achieved awards for four of its latest architectural projects in St James, Barbados. Footprints is a villa featuring a modern, minimalist design. In direct contrast to its surroundings, it presents a rare statement for a contemporary designed villa on Barbados. Featuring full length folding glass doors, interior spaces expand into the exterior and connect with the striking views of the beach and sea beyond. The aim for Settlers Barbados was to create an exclusive retreat of residential villas on a site with over 70 metres of uninterrupted beachfront. Careful planning resulted in four blocks of two, three or four connected villas, each overlooking a courtyard and swimming pool. Conceptually, each villa encapsulates the complete celebration of the outdoors.

Based on traditional Caribbean style, The Spa at the Coral Reef Club provides a secluded oasis. This exclusive, world-class facility maximizes views over the tropical gardens without overlooking nearby hotel rooms. Lush planting and water form its key design with each treatment room allowing the choice of an air-conditioned space or to open on to private walled gardens. Limegrove Lifestyle Centre extended the vernacular context of Holetown through the design of 13 buildings of varying scales and heights around a series of courtyards. It caters to visitors and locals who want to experience its restaurants and exclusive retail outlets. Coral stone, bright colours and green, living walls all influenced the overall design.

 A is a boutique firm based in Tucson, Arizona focused on producing unique and inventive homes of the highest quality that are responsive to their owner’s lifestyle and respectful of the Sonoran Desert. The company’s award-winning team has presented the two following projects. Dove Mountain Hillside Residence is located in the northern foothills of the town of Marana. The client wanted a simple but site responsive home that captures views of a distant valley and rugged outcroppings. The main residence was to be a distinct living area for the owners with detached living quarters for guests and family visitors. Due to the temperate climate outside of the summer months, it was important to focus on

the integration of indoor and outdoor living spaces with multiple outdoor living areas for different seasons. The property’s subtle entry hints at the hillside beyond its doors but once they open into the main courtyard, a dramatic and expansive view is revealed to all who enter. Canyon Vista Residence was designed as a winter home in the Sonoran Desert for retired professionals. The client’s goal was to capture the natural light, views, ruggedness and cacti of the desert. As the client was inspired by the Philip Johnson Glass House, Robinette Architects created a glass house suited to the surrounding desert terrain. Various shading design elements protect the home from the extreme summer temperatures while allowing it to be filled with natural light.
