The Portbyhan Hotel in West Looe was originally a private house before being significantly extended and developed over many years prior to its conversion to a hotel. Having been seriously neglected, the building was purchased from the administrators by the current owners who commissioned tgl property to carry out a complete renovation. The programme of refurbishment was phased in such a way as to minimise the
time that the hotel was closed to the public. This maintained a cost effective schedule that would be proportional with the predicted future earnings potential of the hotel. Due to its unique riverside location within a conservation area, the exterior’s transformation had to be carefully planned. The new stainless steel and glass railings tie the previously disjointed halves of the building together, while the new Welsh slate cladding on the entrance provides a striking first impression for guests. Internal features include bespoke new bars and a curved oak staircase offering guests access to enjoy the stunning roof terrace views over the harbour. The public spaces are completed in a light, bright style with modern décor and fittings.
