, Tandem Architects (2001) has grown into a firm with extensive experience in a wide range of projects. These include everything from hotels, resorts and condominiums to residential developments, office buildings, retail units and private residences. The Symphony is Tandem’s award-winning mixed-use development on Bangsaen beach, Chonburi in Thailand. It consists of six highrise residential towers, a boutique hotel and a central sports complex. The client’s brief was to create an exceptional project where both the architecture and business model resulted in the most optimum outcome. The overall project was also to form its own community and connections yet still provide ample individual, personal spaces for residents and guests.
Villages of small compact buildings are the key master plan design within this project. This changes the way typical sports complexes and retail units are contained in big ‘boxes’. Instead, The Symphony breaks down the masses to enable open-air ventilation to flow through the development and thus reduce energy consumption. Sports facilities are strategically integrated with retail elements and ballrooms by elevating them to the second and third floors where users can enjoy the fabulous sea views. With over 140,000m² of land, a major design challenge was how to connect each function without sacrificing any benefits. Tandem’s solution was to provide several layers of connections including bridges on the first and second floors and semi-outdoor paths at ground level.
