This year marks the 37th annual Pride festival in Toronto and our second Pride Month. We are thrilled to be hosting 25 days of exciting programming and hearing from a variety of voices that add to the conversation around Pride and what it means to celebrate our identities. As we prepare to welcome queer artists, party in the city’s coolest venues and reflect on our history together, we would like to wholeheartedly thank our dedicated and committed volunteers, staff, friends, and sponsors of Pride Toronto. Without the continuous support from our community and partners we would not be able to make Pride Month 2017 a success. Pride’s historical roots are derived from recognizing and celebrating our unique queer and trans communities. We are fortunate to have an incredible range of arts and cultural events scheduled, including the continuation of our highly successful Human Rights Panels in partnership with the 519 Community Centre. These panel discussions explore some of the issues that affect our community, including youth issues, intersectionality, the arts, and civil rights movements. We also have the honor of welcoming Tony Kushner as the keynote speaker of our Icon Series this year. As Ontario’s first female and openly gay Premier, I am so proud that our province embraces the full mosaic of humanity. In Ontario, we know our diversity is our greatest strength. When different people come together and share their ideas, backgrounds and perspectives, we can accomplish anything. This year’s Toronto Pride theme is “+” — a declaration of addition. It’s a commitment to inclusion that’s reflected in everything I do as Premier. Like you, I want to live in a province that respects the contributions of every single person. That’s why it’s so important to create communities that welcome every citizen, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation. SCREAMING QUEENS: RIOT AT COMPTON CAFETERIA
Screaming Queens is an Emmy Awardwinning film that tells the story about a significant moment in history—one of the first recorded uprisings by the transgender communities against social oppression and mistreatment. The riots at Compton Cafeteria took place in the 60s in San Francisco’s impoverished Tenderloin neighbourhood. The riots paved the way for a stronger and more inclusive LGBTQ movement at the local level. The screening will be followed by an interactive discussion that will explore the significant role of trans communities on the frontlines of queer liberation movements—and how too often such stories are erased from LGBTQ history. LIFE – LOSS – LIGHT: WE REMEMBER ORLANDO MEMORIAL STARTS | 9PM On June 12, 2016, LGBTQ2S communities around the globe were confronted with the realities of how violence, racism and homo/ bi/transphobia remain very real experiences in our lives. Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, became the target of violence resulting in the deaths of 49 people, many of whom belonged to our Latinx community. We will not forget those who lost their lives in this act of violence. We will gather to remind ourselves that ‘Still Estamos Aqui’—‘We Are Still Here’. This evening we will celebrate the invaluable lives of our diverse communities and remember those we have lost along our journey for freedom. And through light, we will acknowledge that a brighter future founded on love and respect is not just a possibility but is a strong commitment that we all share. In partnership with local artist janet romero-leiva, this year’s Orlando Memorial will include the unveiling of a new community-informed art piece commissioned by The 519. The presence of this art piece will serve as an important reminder for us to strive for justice and safety for LGBTQ2S community members here in Toronto and around the world.

UNTIL WE ARE FREE: THE GLOBAL STRUGGLE FOR LGBTQ HUMAN RIGHTS
PRIDE HUMAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE:
Until We Are All Free: The Global Struggle for LGBTQ Rights is a panel discussion that will illuminate some of the grassroots organizing efforts taking place around the world. We will talk about some of the ways activists around the world are confronting oppression and violence, and seeking real solutions to the daily threats to safety faced by LGBTQ communities. In the context of these global struggles, the panelists will shed light on the challenges faced by community organizers on the ground, share strategies for advancing meaningful change, and discuss how Canadian LGBTQ communities can support these remarkable efforts. The exciting panelists’ lineup includes transnational experts and activists working towards global LGBTQ equality.
Can we apply feminist ideas and ideals to discourse about trans communities? Can we create spaces for trans subjectivity within the feminist movement, beyond gender binaries? And if so, how can we create a theory and practices that are focused on the experiences of trans communities but are relevant to all? This panel will look at some of these questions and more by bringing together key voices to discuss the emergence of transgender visibility, reversing hegemonic concepts of gender and moving towards gender and sexual fluidity.
Latoya Nugent, one of our panelists, is an LGBTQ human rights advocate and activist in Jamaica and the co-founder of the Tambourine Army—which organized the country’s first major protest against sexual abuse.
TRANSFEMINISM: BEYOND BODILY BINARIES TOWARDS GENDER FLUIDITY
This panel will be moderated by Dr. Laura Mae Lindo, Director of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Diversity and Equity Office, with expertise in anti-oppression pedagogy and education. The panelists include Professor Jack Halberstam, academic and author of Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal; Professor Kathryn Bond Stockton, specialist in queer theory and author of Beautiful Bottom, Beautiful Shame: Where “Black” Meets “Queer”; and Professor Anne Sauvagnargues, specialist in the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze.

CAROLYN DOUSE
Meera Sethi is a Canadian visual artist whose multidisciplinary work asks questions about migration, diaspora, and hybridity. She has created a 4-storey outdoor mural called “Intersections” located on the NW corner of Church and Wellesley streets that celebrates queer and trans South Asian activism in Toronto. Her work has been featured in NBC, NPR, The Toronto Star, The Globe&Mail, The Fader, Vice, VOGUE India, CNN, MTV and more. She lives and works in Toronto.
Carolyn A. Douse started her first company BWC (Black, White & Colour Unlimited) at the age of 15 and now, six years later, is a part of another, OldowanCo. While still attending OCADU, Carolyn’s artistic growth has been immense as her graphic design skills have expanded in multiple ways. Due to working in the Rapid Prototyping Studio for five years at OCADU, she has been able to explore the world beyond 2D plains of design into 3D. Now trained in several cutting edge technologies, Carolyn has been able to bring her creative skills into the workplace.

Witness Yonge-Dundas Square transformed by 20+ installation, performance, and visual artists into an outdoor visual artistic landscape with the common theme “Levels.” Come witness the creative and interactive projects of LGBTQ+ artists from Toronto and beyond. Following the exhibit, Revolutions Per Minute—an Indigenous global new music platform, label, and artist collective—will present a curated lineup of music blending Indigenous and global sounds. Making her Canadian debut is genre-bending, Iranian-born, Rotterdam-based vocalist Sevdaliza, who brings blends of electronic, triphop, grime, and the avant-garde. ALTERNA QUEER Take a break from the mainstream. Think beyond boxes and labels and rethink what it means to be queer. Starting off is Dainty Smith and Les Femmes Fatales, a burlesque troupe composed primarily of black women and women of colour who are fiercely sexy and defiantly glamorous, followed by First Nations burlesque group Virago Nation, on a mission to reclaim Indigenous sexuality from the effects of colonization. Alterna Queer gets into the music with the infectious glitter, glam, and grit of Persons, the genre-defying and terrifying Partner, and the groove cutting and synth-based musicality of Lal. Closing the show will be Toronto’s own Unbuttoned, painting auditory textures and emotions with electronic, pop, alternative, and R&B overtones.

YALLA BARRA Pride proudly presents the return of Yalla Barra, celebrating Middle Eastern culture with an amazing lineup. Headliner Abjeez, is one of the most successful Iranian music groups in the last 20 years. The Swedish and Iranian duo have long been making music. In opposition to the recent US immigration ban, they dropped an early release of their newest single to bring awareness to the state of so many innocent people affected by the ban. Abjeez blends Iranian soul rhythms with reggae, rock, ska, and flamenco, singing in Farsi, English, Spanish, and Swedish. Sometimes sharp, sometimes humorous, the band explores politics, love, and everything in between. Dubbed the first Persian-speaking Reggae/Ska band, they truly are a cultural bridge between the East, West, and beyond. Straight from LA, Shiva joins Pride this year with her unique blend of traditional and futuristic sounds, along with

PAN DULCE Pan Dulce, or Sweet Bread, marks the return of a Latinx focused event. Pan Dulce is serving up a sweet lineup—hosted by Franny Moreno and Carolina Brown. Hailing all the way from Brazil, Rico Dalasam is hitting the stage to share his experiences through the lens of hip hop. Rico pushes boundaries in music and in society, breaking taboos through his music. La Santa Cecilia, the Grammy award-winning musical phenomenon hits the stage all the way from L.A. From their beginning the group have used music as a tool to raise awareness and support for various human rights issues. This globetrotter tours the world over in her endless search for summer, and ignites the dancefloor wherever she lands. MikeQ of Qween Beat will take over the decks to keep the dancefloor moving, this time to his ballroom and voguing inspired beats. Qween Beat are immersed in the ball culture of NYC and working to keep the growing culture alive. Drag Ball is all about the drag. LAST DANCE The beloved Swedish remix master Stonebridge, makes his debut at Pride Toronto. He’s responsible for a number of club and chart topping hits with Robin S, Ne-Yo, and Jason Derulo. Founder of the first Swedish DJ/Remix company, SweMix, Stonebridge is bringing the energy to the Last Dance. Joining him will be veteran DJ Barry Harris, who racked up accolades with his past projects, Thunderpuss and Kon Kan. Barry Harris brings a wealth of experience, and an energetic set filled with classic remixes and dance hits. Nicole Albino returns to the stage. Aside from performing as one half of Nina Sky, Nicole has spent the last decade honing her skills as a producer and notable DJ— curating music and spinning for some of the world’s most iconic brands including Nike, Opening Ceremony, Christie’s, The Glaad Media Awards, and Cavalli. FLEX N’ FLUID Hosted by the delectable Krafty Queers, Ms. Nookie Galore and Mr. Chocolate Baby Daddy will have you fired up for Flex n’ Fluid. But starting things off will be a special one-hour Drag King show hosted by Pretty Munny Productions.
Then we get right into the music with an all-star lineup of DJs: Discwoman Collective from NYC, who share two of their top DJs; the eclectic and dance floor fueling Mobilegirl; and the sonic disruptor and multidisciplinary artist Shyboi. One of Toronto’s newest parties featured on stage—Wyze Gyal is a collective of artists and DJs hosting regular parties spinning anything from techno, hip hop, and R&B, to soca and dancehall. Supporting the lineup are special performances by Ill Nana, Valeroo, and DJ Sissyfuss. Finally, the night finishes with Jasmine Infiniti. She draws inspiration from techno, house, vogue, and hip hop to create a contemporary dark club sound, which has awarded her the title “The Queen of Hell.”

BLOCKORAMA Now entering their 19th year of Blockorama, Blackness Yes! is at it again with another year, another amazing party to shut it down, and a wide range of DJs and live performers. A celebration of Black, Caribbean, and African communities, Blockorama has set the stage for one of Pride’s biggest, most well-attended, and most lively events.
Starting you off right and carrying you into the night are DJ Black Cat, Craig Dominic, Pleasure, Nik Red, Carma, and Vaughan. Hosting duties will belong in the artistic hands of Lali Mohamed and Zinduru (aka Kim Ninkuru). Lali is an African writer and public speaker, deeply connected to social justice advocacy. Zinduru is a performance artist from Bujumbura, Burundi, based in Toronto. Using spoken word, voguing, and visual art, she tells stories about being a black queer trans woman. As always Blockorama brings you two big names making waves in the music industry. Cakes Da Killa will be hitting the stage mixing in his various musical influences and underground experience.
The prolific Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King joins the stage as Blockorama’s headlining act.
This year Blockorama will feature a Black-owned community market with handmade and local goods from independent business owners and creators. Blackness Yes! Will be partnering with Black CAP, the Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention. Black CAP has been working tirelessly since its inception in 1989 to respond to the threat of HIV and AIDS in Toronto’s African, Caribbean, and Black communities, guided by the motto, “Because all Black people’s lives are important.”

THE FINAL PLAY After soaking up the energy of the Parade, head on over to Yonge-Dundas Square for a finale like no other.
Years & Years are one of the UK’s biggest and most loved breakthrough bands of recent years. Simultaneously, frontman Olly Alexander has emerged as one of the most talked-about and culturally important young talents. His defiant LGBT speech at Glastonbury and the band’s controversial video for hit single “Desire” (which defied the homogeneity of today’s pop charts) are just two examples of his powerful influence, which have seen him emerge as a voice of his generation. Dream pop trio, KING, have arrived from LA to share their smooth vibe and soulful authenticity, fresh off their 2017 Grammy nomination. Before that, relive the late 90s with Wannabe, Canada’s premier Spice Girls Tribute group. The costumes, the glitter, the accents, the platform shoes... Spice World lives with their premium dose of girl power.
This party wouldn’t feel complete with some of Toronto’s brightest and on-the-rise DJs. Toronto darling and party rocker DJ Lissa Monet will be mixing her blend of 80s and 90s nostalgia with Caribbean influence. Getting things started will be Emily Sbux, bringing you waves of house and commercial vibes.
