IN THE HEART OF THE BEAST PUPPET AND MASK THEATRE (HOBT) combines flour,

newspaper, paint, imagination, and community input to tell stories that explore and celebrate the human experience and the wonders of the world’s natural and cultural richness.

Puppetry’s power lies in the act of transformation — of bringing something inanimate to life. This act in itself speaks to our lives, which rise and fall and rise again. As we share this act of building and performing, we find that art brings people together. It creates and expands community.

The work of HOBT is strongly grounded in the concerns of its home neighborhood as they connect to regional and global issues. Through its artistry, the theatre brings people together in the hands-on creation of and participation in community-wide puppet and mask events. In addition to the annual MayDay Parade and Festival, HOBT offers a wide variety of performances and programs year-round. Please see pages 17–20 for a preview of our 2012-2013 season offerings.

The End of the World As We Know It The Beginning of the World As We Live It

O

ur daily dependence on fossil fuels energies is plugged into environmental peril, systems of human violence, and immense economic exploitation.

What human energies are driving such madness?

And what is the human energy of change?

While considering the gifts of the renewable energy of Sun, Wind, and Water, it is important to remember our HUMAN ENERGY is a renewable resource that is present for us at each moment. Yes, each moment.

Now! This year we celebrate the local and international groundswell of people turning away from entanglement with exploitive systems towards healthy communities with sustainable visions of the future. There is no one right way to do this—transition involves difficult and honest discussions, inner soulful wrestling, outward action, many ideas and many hands, and ultimately, the unleashing of much joy and abiding love.

The Energy Pipeline: Connected by the Energy Pipeline, yet isolated, ordinary people just like you, use objects and services derived from fossil fuels. What materials go into making our laptops? How much electricity is used to power a clothes dryer?

Where does that electricity come from?

Even renewable energy sources are resource expensive—what are those costs? What are “necessities,” and what can you live without? What will we truly mourn when we no longer have it? These are the questions we must ask ourselves.

Energy Gremlins: Running about the pipeline are energy gremlins with their wall socket faces and pronged tails making sure everyone stays plugged in.

The Wounded Earth: The Energy Pipeline pierces the heart of Mother Earth. Our habits of energy consumption drain her resources and deplete her lifeforce, bleeding her dry. When we contribute to her suffering, we create our own suffering because we too are part of the earth.

Cranes: Cranes accompany the Wounded Earth, mourning and absorbing the grief of the world. As they reach the bottom of this grief, they begin to open both their wings and their hearts. They dance to remove the grief so that a new world may move forward. Cranes are a symbol of peace. Even so, they have a fierce grace.

They are strong for themselves and for each other.

ONSIDER THIS..... When was the last time you filled your car with gas? Or the last time you had to repair your flat bike tire? What material are your clothes made of? Did you use a pen the last time you wrote a shopping list? All those things are in part composed of natural resources extracted from our earth in harmful and destructive ways. From one 42gallon barrel of oil, only 19.4 gallons will be used as gasoline. The rest, over half, is used to create products such as plastics, synthetic textiles, ink, guitar strings, hand lotion, transparent tape... the list goes on and on. Our lives are filled with a multitude of everyday actions based in consumption. The pipeline in Scene One represents the abusive extraction of resources which are used to make consumed goods, entangling us all in the inescapable wounding of the Mother Earth. Are we moving toward inevitable collapse?

We are entangled in a vast network of fossil fuel consumption and dependence tied to everything we do. The entanglement exists not only with the obvious habits of using electricity or driving our cars, but also in the production and use of life-saving medical technologies, toothbrushes, or glasses. Consider the ways in which you use and depend on products and services derived from petroleum and other fossil fuel products, such as gasoline, electricity, and the plethora of plastics we take for granted. This entanglement breeds isolation, environmental devastation, economic disparity, and acts of violence in faraway places as well as in our own backyard. We all sometimes find ourselves saying, “Not me!” to avoid the pain of knowing we participate in this system and the wounding of the Earth. When we look directly at the state of the earth, the suffering of other people, and our own unhappiness, and acknowledge “Yes, we are part of this, we are trapped in this, we are affected by this,” we take the first step in grieving. We ask you to look deeply. Do you see yourself?

BREAK THE SPELL Whirling Deer Hearts: Our wild Deer Hearts guide us to a new dawn, urging us to break and fall awake. They divine a way to rebirth ourselves. They whirl in prayer, revolving around an open heart, just as the earth revolves around the sun. Their limbs branch out to receive the truth and love of the cosmos, yet are firmly rooted in relation to the earth.

Deer Spirits: The first people to wake up and to break through become Deer Spirits to purify and protect the path. They give out a new form of energy and currency, based on unconditional giving and loving — Love Bucks and Love Doe. They leave deer heart tracks on the ground as a sacred path for others to follow and be reminded that love begets love begets love begets love...

Earth’s Heart: The Earth’s Heart is OURS. Enter the sleeping heart.

Much of our time is spent trapped in cars, on the computer, or in a cubicle.

We are tired and damaged, and we live in a world that is tired and damaged.

We have passed a natural balance, and very little stands between us and destruction.

We have lost touch with our wild nature, our center of creativity, energy and life. Some ancestors believed the heart to be the center of intelligence, the universe, and the sun. We can use our hearts to bring change and follow our intuition into our wild, loving, and sacred center. This heart cannot break; earth’s wild heart is aware, holding all things together... Shake it! Awaken!

5 Goddess of Compassion, Tear Flags, and River Skirt Carriers: Chalchiuhtlicue, the water goddess, reigned in the Fourth Sun Era with kindness to the humans. The other gods became jealous and accused Chalchiuhtlicue of faking her compassion. Tears flowed from the eyes of Chalchiuhtlicue, causing a great flood that threatened the existence of the human race.

In a genuine act of compassion, Chalchiuhtlicue turned humans into fish to save them. As a sign of the covenant, on the bank of the river, grew a prickly pear cactus laden with fruit, symbolizing the human heart.

Genuine compassion is the source of change and comes only with sacrifice of the ego. When a transition happens in one’s innermost being, it becomes visible: a sweet, vital fruit of generosity.

Beavers with Tools: The resourceful beaver works diligently to create an environment where it and its fellow creatures are able to flourish. Because they live cooperatively, these beavers are sharing tools.

Sloths on Bicycles: Sloths are extremely slow-moving beasts. They are so slow that algae grows in their fur. Our ability and desire to move quickly make it hard for us to participate in the slower, subtler things around us.

This brigade of sloth cyclists is declaring: “Take your time! Make the time!”

Human Libraries: Check them out! They are overflowing with skills, know-how, and wonderous stories. We are honoring the wisdom of elders in our community as well as the network of handmade zines and chapbooks that have been an “under-the-radar” source of know-how for decades.

il is over! Let’s all get out our rocking chairs and start knitting sweaters. Let’s start tanning squirrel hides, dig a root cellar. It’s back to the days before the light bulb…Right?

In actuality, we celebrate the many wonderful ways in which people are working to change the path of our communities. Using less oil will require a combination of old and new ideas. The transition movement has a foot in the past and a foot in current activist culture.

This work is not just about developing alternative energy systems. Reaching out to neighbors, making political change, and building local resilience are also key to transition.

Wisdom and know-how are within our community. People around us have the skills we need to live in a more sustainable manner. It may be quicker to search the internet for a how-to, but the computer will never become a role model.

Reduce. Recycle. But also reuse, repair, reclaim, repurpose and reinvigorate! Sharpen your tools and fix stuff! Make a birdbath out of a Playstation II. Do the work of your household and community with your own hands. Make do with what we have in abundance, and enjoy a deeper connection to your community and ecosystem. Fix it up, wear it out, make do or do without!

Maypole Dance: Celtic, Ancient Roman, and Indian cultures used various forms of the Maypole dance to celebrate flowers, fertility, and/or transition between seasons.** Maypole dances bring people progressively closer to a central point while weaving together their individual ribbons, symbolizing a connection between us and the fertile earth.

The Amen Corner: The name is derived from a James Baldwin play in which an African American minister uses his speaking skills to explore truth.

His supporters stand in the Amen Corner and indicate agreement by shouting “Amen.” The Amen Corner team, a subgroup of the Ventura Village Neighborhood Association, holds public forums at the intersection of Franklin and Chicago Avenues in Minneapolis every Thursday and Friday from 4–6 PM. People are encouraged to speak their minds, raise their voices and share what can be done to improve the lives of neighborhood residents.

SURROUND OF LIGHT Seedling Arks: Arks carrying seedlings act as altars to new beginnings, announcing the miracle of new life before us and the joy of sharing that miracle.

Four Horses: White, Red, Yellow, and Black horses gather from the four directions — North, South, East and West — to bring the medicine of unity and the prophetic message of The Forest.

The Forest: The Forest has a memory recorded in rings of ancient growth. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the largest mass execution in American history, the hanging of 38 Dakota men in Mankato, MN, and the subsequent removal of Dakota people from the state of Minnesota. In commemoration, 38 trees reach ever up, their roots planted forever into the memory of our earth to honor the wisdom and the people that continue to grow.

What Kind of Times Are These There’s a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted who disappeared into those shadows.

I’ve walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don’t be fooled this isn’t a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here, our country moving closer to its own truth and dread, its own ways of making people disappear.

Vegetable Beds and Compost Toilets: The Vegetables, snug in their bed, have a different take on ‘wetting the bed’. The flowers in the Compost Toilet remind us that we are conduits of a larger energy cycle of food and compost.

L

ight surrounds us everyday, as it has for many millions of years and as it shall for millions more. Change has come again and again, and still the poetic dialogue between energy and its ecstatic expression—life—continues. Eternal sustenance. Built into everyone and everything is a need to connect during their lifetime and engage in the current moment. As we enter Spring we are coaxed toward the light that sustains us all. We journey around the sun, in a large swallowing loop, the seasonal change continuing as each swallows the next.

Both MayDay and the transition movement celebrate collective nature and enterprise, and hold, in tandem, familiar elements of the past and unknowable surprises of the journey to come. The medicine of touch and color, song and movement is a living blessing as we come together in community. Happy Mayday!

The Sun: The Sun calls us to move, to grow, to reach upward for what is possible.

It is constant and seemingly eternal as we move in our inextricable cycles around it.

Nowhere is it more revelatory than in Spring when life, long dormant, reaches upward.

The Bees: Bees of all shapes and sizes dance the Zumba, Samba, Caribe and Hula in relation to the sun. They are intimate and energized participants in the continuation of the cycle of life.

Dancing with flowers in the sun’s embrace, they communicate through vibration.

Ouroboros: Ouroboros, an ancient symbol showing a snake or dragon eating its own tail, represent the eternal energy of the cycle of life, death and rebirth.

Cat Ion Dragons: In this year of the dragon, Dragons representing Cations (positively charged particles) circle, chase, and greet to bring auspicious energy to these new beginnings. They bless these cycles as surrounding rainbows arc up and down, connecting onlookers in a game of catch with the sun.

Reap-ocolypse! …it’s no wonder why so many people are predicting the end of the world. In many ways, we're bringing it upon ourselves.

Yet, amidst all the talk about shortage of resources…the earth continues to provide. There is bounty all around us! The Earth our Mother has the answers buried deep within her, if we are willing to till the soil and reap the benefits — together.

There are old ways that need to be left behind, but there are even older ways that need to be remembered and embraced.

As artists, activists and Earth-sharers alike, we must be able to discern the ancient from the outdated as we move forward to create a better world.

Yes — let the apocalypse come! And yes — let us be the makers of it! But, let our apocalypse destroy as a wildfire destroys. Eradicating the decaying and useless, enriching the soil, and creating the space for new and much-needed life to grow.

DRYERS and CLOTHESLINES A typical clothes dryer uses between 1,800 to 5,000 watts of power when it runs. A clothesline uses 0 watts.

CARS and BIKES A bicycle uses $0 and does not contribute to air or sound pollution. And biking is wonderful exercise! We are lucky to live in a city that supports the rise of biking as a viable means of transportation. Besides bike use by individuals, there are bike couriers, pedicabs, and bicycle delivery services for books, honey, pizza, coffee, newspapers, and more.

BEES Bees pollinate over a hundred flowers and crops in the USA including: red clovers, blueberries, blackberries, lavender, chives, rosemary, hollyhocks, sunflowers, catmint, snapdragons, comfrey, tomatoes, eggplant, beans, peas, summer squash, winter squash, peppers, melons, apples, cucumbers, peaches, and pears. Bee populations have seen recent declines, possibly due to the use of toxic chemicals in farming.

COMPOST According to the Environmental Protection Agency each American disposed of, on average, 4.43 pounds of waste per day. However, organic materials, such as paper, cardboard, yard trimmings, and food, continue to be the largest component of this waste.* We can help reduce waste through recycling and composting!

Some places are even beginning to compost human waste.

Composting toilets provide an enclosed environment for the natural process of decomposition to occur. It is similar to the process that happens on forest floors, where wildlife droppings decompose and convert into valuable nutrients for vegetation to grow.

Creating and using more nutrient-rich compost could help reduce environmental problems associated with chemical fertilizers. Una larga tubería con figuras veladas usando tecnologías modernas simboliza nuestra dependencia de esto recursos. Los duendes de la energía no dejan que nadie se desconecte, mientras la Tierra Herida sufre. Detrás bailan grullas, lamentándose y absorbiendo el pesar de la Tierra Herida.

ESCENA 2: ROMPAMOS EL HECHIZO Rompamos el hechizo que nos divide y separa. Como seres humanos, vivimos de modo muy aislado e individual. Los Corazones de Ciervos remolinean y nos estimulan a amar y dar sin condiciones.

Las Camisas del Espíritu Sagrado honran a quienes ya no existen.

El Corazón de la Tierra duerme, agobiado por el diario quehacer de nuestras vidas. La Diosa de la Compasión nos recuerda que la verdadera compasión es la fuente del cambio; debemos abrir nuestros corazones y darnos por entero al cambio.

ESCENA 3: MANOS A LA OBRA Celebración del trabajo que se está haciendo por cambiar nuestras comunidades.

El cambio requiere una combinación de ideas nuevas y viejas, y la inclusión de nuestros vecinos. Los barrenderos recuperan las calles, despejando lo antiguo para que pueda pasar lo nuevo. Los castores con herramientas son trabajadores y los Ososo Perezosos montados en bicicletas nos recuerdan que debemos pausar y disfrutar de las pequeñas cosas de la vida. Las Bibliotecas Humanas honran la sabiduría de nuestros mayores y el conocimiento presente en nuestras comunidades. La Plaza y los Palos de Mayo nos brindan un lugar donde bailar y conocer a nuestros vecinos. Las cuerdas para colgar ropa nos recuerdan los diversos modos que hay de usar menos energía. ESCENA 4: LA LUZ QUE NOS RODEA Nos rodea la luz, la cual nos abraza a todos a medida que vamos circulando alrededor del sol y pasando por las estaciones. Los Cuatro Caballos provenientes de los cuatro puntos cardinales (Norte, Sur, Este y Oeste) se reúnen para aguardar el mensaje de El Bosque. Los 38 árboles de El Bosque conmemoran el aniversario número 150 del ahorcamiento de 38 indígenas Dakota en Mankato, MN. El Sol nos insta a movernos y desarrollarnos, y las arcas de semillas simbolizan los nuevos comienzos, mientras que los Lechos de Verduras y los Inodoros Composteros nos recuerdan que formamos parte de un gran ciclo vital. Las Abejas se energizan y celebran los cambios que ocurren. This unique event honors the Mexican tradition of La Posada, leading everyone on a journey to four sites in our community. Enacted with beauty, humor, soulful live music, and an ending feast. INTENSIVE PUPPETRY TRAINING FOR ADULTS

September 10–28, 2012 January 25– February 10, 2013 A puppet—poem—mashup inspired by The Little Prince, The Epic of Gilgamesh and Japanese anime follows the journey of a mysterious kid hunting for a lost companion. Enkidu searches between veils of the worlds, deciphering love poem patterns of nature to unlock the imagination, unfold the heart, free the spirit, and find the beloved. This recreation myth explores the spirit-bridge connecting human imagination and the natural world using puppets, animated poetry, projections and live acoustic-electronica music.

This activity is funded, in part, by The Jim Henson Foundation, and by appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State's general fund, and its arts and cultural heritage fund that was created by a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Guest Artist Series February 2013 We love when marionettes dance through the theatre, stiltwalkers knock on the door, and handpuppets come begging for an audience. The work we do here at HOBT represents only a small fraction of the variety of puppetry work happening in Minnesota and around the world. Our Guest Artist Series welcomes both local and national puppeteers to our stage and shares them with you! Participants focus on performance creation that rises from the whole ecology of a stimulating urban neighborhood, the news stories of the day, the personal stories of participants, and the transformative realm offered by puppet and image theatre. We will study the historical significance of the various techniques explored, and what it means to build performance of community relevance, containing questions, compassion, and joy. Youth Puppetry Troupes HOBT’s Puppetry Troupes are dynamic learning environments that foster both artistic and personal growth. In a safe and open environment, youth are mentored in an array of artistic skills as well as tools that foster self-esteem, leadership, and building of an active community. Several kinds of puppetry, including hand puppets, pageantry, and puppet movies are explored.

Solstice Stilt-N-Spin Camp June 18-22, 2012

PuppetLab FOUR PUPPET WORLD PREMIERES Program Direction by Alison Heimstead

March 2013 In September 2012, four artists will begin creating brand new works of puppetry.

For seven months, the artists will be part of a learning community and grow with guidance, resources, and the support of their fellow PuppetLab creators as they develop their pieces. These adventurous world premieres will be presented to the public in March 2013—don’t miss it!

1–3 PM, Ages 9–12 7–9 PM, Ages 12 and older The Stilt-N-Spin summer camp at HOBT will give youth and adults the opportunity to learn how to stilt walk and fire-spin (without the fire) in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. We will celebrate the large fire in the sky as it spins closest to us on the Summer Solstice with a performance at the end of the week.

Saturday Morning Puppet Shows for Kids October 2012–March 2013 Another colorful, affordable season of live Saturday Puppet Shows for Kids is coming this Fall! Nearly every Saturday, different artists perform engaging puppet shows at 10 AM and 12 Noon. A great alternative to screen time, these performances will delight kids of all ages! Transition!

The transition town movement: Neighbors working together to create a healthier, happier and more abundant future for all!

The transition town movement is a joyous, creative and practical response to some of the most serious problems in the world today. These include: climate change, dependence on oil, coal and natural gas, and economic insecurity. People have worked toward transition for generations, all across the world. Recently the idea has been gaining traction as a movement, and the first named Transition Town developed in England in 2005. The work of transition is being enacted in many communities around the world, including our own.

Working together, neighbors learn new skills and share their wisdom, to make communities sustainable and adaptable to change. Together, on a local level, communities transition from a culture that is increasingly dangerous, polluting, unhealthy and unjust, to a better way of life.

Why transition?

Our world has been built on cheap, abundant fossil fuels: oil, coal and natural gas.

We are using more and finding less. The remaining oil — like tar sands and deep sea sources, is lower quality, harder to get, more expensive, and production is dirtier and more dangerous. Transitioning from fossil fuels means learning to live well while using less energy, and developing cleaner, renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.

Burning fossil fuels creates greenhouse gas and climate change, which contributes to increasingly severe weather like droughts, floods, hurricanes and heat waves. Using less energy and transitioning to cleaner sources helps lessen the damage caused by greenhouse gas.

Today’s economy depends on using lots of cheap, dirty energy. We use dirty energy to produce and support our food, clothes, homes, medicine, transportation and more. Learning to be more self-sufficient and interconnected makes communities stronger and more adaptable to change, while ending our dependence on dirty energy.

In our metro area, a number of neighborhoods have already started to organize themselves to be more energy independent, grow more of their own food, find new ways of transportation, and learn practical skills to prepare for a better future. People are building deep connections with their neighbors, sowing the seeds to grow stronger communities, and moving proactively into the future together.

What does this have to do with MayDay? In summer 2011, local transition town groups and individuals, with In the Heart of the Beast Theatre, proposed that the MayDay Festival in 2012 be a grand unleashing of local transition. Transition was named as the Festival theme and community volunteers created transition initiative teams to share ideas with MayDay participants. These teams are working on: Energy, Food Justice, and Transportation.

s a nonprofit, community-based theatre company, In the Heart of the Beast offers hundreds of volunteer opportunities. Whether you are looking for something short-term or year-round, something creative that supports the community, or just something fun, we’ve got just the thing for you!

A

SATURDAY PUPPET SHOWS Help host families as they come to see a kid-friendly puppet show in our lobby. Activities include moving tables, chairs and sets, and greeting folks as they arrive. We offer a different show every week!

MAKE ‘N’ TAKE ASSISTANTS Hone your artistic skills as you help children and families make puppets or masks. A wide variety of opportunities are available, from Saturday Make ‘n’ Take workshops to off-site field trips.

MAYDAY Help create and stage the MayDay Parade and Festival next year. Hundreds of positions are available during April and on the day of the event including workshop assistants, festival set-up and strike crews, booth staffing and parade marshals.

BOARD COMMITTEES We welcome long-term volunteers who are looking for a more in-depth experience. If you have skills and an interest in fundraising, budgeting, the legal field, or neighborhood issues, join one of the Board committees.
