I

T IS MY THIRD YEAR as part of the team that coordinates the MayDay Parade, Ceremony, and Festival each year. In the context of 44 years, I still feel like a new kid at the table. I have only begun to learn the lessons that MayDay has to offer me in this role.

As a neighbor, though, this is my 24th MayDay. Last year was the first time I could say I have been around for most of HOBT’s MayDay celebrations. And so while I may still be green as HOBT’s Executive Director, as a neighbor, when it comes to MayDay, I am an old-timer.

As a neighbor, I see HOBT’s MayDay as an incredibly rare and powerful tool for building community. Sure, some people live MayDay year-round, but for many others MayDay is an essential South Minneapolis holiday. This is our Mardi Gras. This is our Carnival.

HOBT brings more stories to these neighborhoods than those we share on MayDay. Over this past year, HOBT set an intention to tell stories about being a good neighbor. In our afterschool and summer youth program, kids from Waite House, Little Earth and Collaborative Village learned to walk on stilts, make puppets, and tell stories about who they are and the neighborhood where they live. And if, like other places in Minnesota, we sometimes live up to a reputation for being inward and unadventurous (and dare I say unwelcoming?), then MayDay is a holiday for shaking off our winter chilliness and spending the day with our neighbors. More than 1,000 neighbors will put time into making the day possible this 44th year. What other neighborhood has this? HOBT’s MayDay tells the story of who we are as a set of South Minneapolis neighborhoods, and who we aspire to be.

Phillips Project’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor

In the coming year, of course, we will have more stories to tell. HOBT artists will continue to work in residence in schools, churches, community centers, and other sites both in our neighborhoods and across the city and the state.

Our friends from Vermont’s Bread and Puppet Theater will stop in for a visit in the fall. We will continue to tell the story of how each of us is part of a watershed, part of an ecosystem that must be cared for. In December, we will have a new show that tells multiple stories to honor the winter holidays. Next February, Steve Ackerman’s BRUTE will tell a story of elves, wizards, and dragons figuring out how to work together as neighbors to face their common challenges.

We acknowledge that, in the midst of all of this storytelling, we have not always spent as much time listening as we could. Over the next year, HOBT will work to strengthen a sometimesneglected practice of listening to our neighbors.

Community School to tell stories of Indigenous resistance from around the world. Our premiere production of MAKE BELIEVE NEIGHBORHOOD used the life and work of Fred Rogers to tell stories about people in our neighborhoods. A touring production of HOBT’s 2016 Premiere THE STORY OF CROW BOY visited cities in Greater Minnesota that are working through the challenges of accepting new immigrant communities. Through our Puppet Lab program, artists created radical, ground-breaking work, including one story of an Abuela on Lake Street who forgot the stories that tell her who she is.

Imagine the Avalon

T

WO YEARS AGO (in my first year on the job), I wrote in the MayDay Tabloid that it was time for HOBT to decide whether to invest in restoring the Avalon Theater, or to leave it behind. A year later, when I announced a decision had been made to stay in the Avalon and work toward a major renovation, some neighbors wondered why I was still seeking community input. They figured the decision had long since been made, and construction must surely be underway. But that construction was not underway a year ago, and it is still not underway today.

YES! We are still committed to renovating the Avalon theater. And NO! There has been no delay, deliberate or otherwise. The changes we have in mind are big, and will take a little more time.

Let me tell you a little more about our plans.

Much at the Avalon has changed already, and much change is yet to come. This past fall, we replaced the original Avalon theater seats. Our new blue stackable chairs are a whole lot more comfortable. MayDay, for the first time in decades, does not include any clay in the mask making process.

Between these two things, visitors already report breathing easier in a theater that smells a whole lot better.

We are deep into a process of imagining other ways the Avalon Theater could better serve our neighborhoods.

Imagine an Avalon with lights on, doors unlocked, and someone in the lobby all day to greet visitors. Imagine an Avalon with doors that are easy to open, level floors, and accessible, gender neutral restrooms. Imagine dedicated spaces for classes, workshops, rehearsals, community meetings, and puppet building. Imagine a lobby coffee shop with comfy chairs and drop-in art activities for kids. Imagine the marquee lights lit up for shows twice as many weekends of the year.

I would love to hear what else you can imagine. I would like to be able to tell a story not only of how we will renovate the Avalon Theater for generations to come, but also about who HOBT will serve, how we will serve them, and how the Avalon will be the best possible place to accomplish that.

Y FIRST MAYDAY WAS IN 2006 while I was a theater undergrad at the U of MN Twin Cities. MayDay instantly became one of the defining arts-based experiences of my life, and was a key driver in why I pursued a career in nonprofit arts management. Community-driven art is uniquely powerful in its ability to shape our world. And the extended network of HOBT artists are among the most profound, magical, and gentle creatives I’ve ever encountered.

In the 12 years since my first MayDay, my life has become entwined with the Twin Cities’ arts scene, and with HOBT in particular. Starting here as the Associate Director in October felt like coming home. I feel so honored to serve this organization, and South Minneapolis. The most exciting part of my work right now is aiding the organization in deep examination regarding whose voices and issues are amplified through our programming and operations, and how.

This is a critical moment for HOBT. We are part of the thunderous movement within the arts world demanding equal support and air time be placed in the hands of Indigenous people, people of color, queer, and youth voices, as well as the voices of women and people with disabilities.

Within that movement, the physical building needs of the Avalon Theater brings into focus the work HOBT must embark on. If we are going to serve the diversity of our community, we must understand what people need from arts organizations, and have a clear sense of how a puppetry theater can meet those needs.

To that end, it’s been a joy and a privilege to join conversations around the Twin Cities, representing HOBT: deeply listening, being a conduit for communication, asking what artists and other organizations want and need, and offering resources and ideas when I can.

Since October, I’ve participated in an examination of how HOBT has currently and historically provided equitable services

to our community, as well as where we have fallen short.

Relationships are built over time, so whether or not our current efforts in this direction will stick has yet to be seen. (We’re committed to this shift, but accountability and realism are important when we discuss this kind of work.)

What I can say we’ve done since I joined the theater, however, is initiated conversations with Tamales Y Bicicletas, the Somali Museum, and MIGIZI, as well as nurtured our existing partnerships with organizations such as St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and The Semilla Center. We’ve re-established a yearround volunteer program, including a direct connection with the U of MN. (We LOVE working with students! Their perspective is invaluable.) We regularly participate in community meetings focused on ensuring quality of life on Lake Street at its most fundamental level—safety. We are engaged with the Lake Street Council and the planning process for July’s “Our Streets” even more deeply than before. We are participating in community conversations about how the Twin Cities’ arts scene can continue to support (and better support) artists served by closed or closing organizations dedicated to marginalized voices—Bedlam, Intermedia, and Patrick’s Cabaret. We’ve made several staffing decisions that place increased leadership responsibility in the hands of passionate, talented individuals that are queer, nonbinary, and people of color. We’ve continued to dedicate regular staff time to discussing social equity in terms of our very own organization.

Getting outside the walls of our own buildings, ironically, is one of the most important things arts managers need to do. The conversations HOBT is having right now feel energizing, and vital, and I echo our Executive Director’s invitation to share what you might imagine for the future of HOBT. We’re here to listen, and we need to hear your ideas.

The Bread and Puppet Theater October 6–7, 2018 We are happy to welcome to our stage a puppetry legacy: The Bread and Puppet Theater. During these five decades of puppetry, thousands of dancing and music-making puppet operators have assisted in the invasion of streets and plazas all over the globe, or they’ve come to Vermont to be part of Our Domestic Resurrection Circus and other summer shows. By the grace of the Whatever 3/4 Almighty, we have survived and even sometimes thrived, doing hundreds of sculpture happenings and esoteric musicals with activist ingredients, and we hope to continue for a few minutes longer.

I ask you...Are you ready to risk it all? Hmmm? Are you feeling strong enough to do battle with a 2 story tall disgruntled cyclops? Are you ready to risk your very lives for your fellow adventurer, be it elf, thief, or 2/3 barbarian, 3/5 dwarf bard warlock? Now, I must warn you....This quest is not for the faint of heart. Do you get easily queasy at the sight of really really really ugly orcs with gross drippy snot dribbling down their bumpy-orcy googly moogly face?! Then get out!

Run! Flee! Now! Save yourself! Because there’s going to be a lot of weird booger-y orc-y stuff in this!!! But for those who are brave and true and say words like “hence” and “yore” and “flagon,” step forth and be prepared for an adventure like no other.

THE PHILLIPS PROJECT is a communitybased residency, now in it’s 8th year, providing immersive arts experiences to our neighborhood youth in partnership with Little Earth of United Tribes, Waite House, Collaborative Village Initiative, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and Midtown Phillips Neighborhood Association.

S A NONPROFIT, community-based theater company, In the Heart of the Beast Theatre offers hundreds of volunteer opportunities.

Whether you are looking for something short-term or yearround, something creative that supports the community, or something fun, we’ve got just the thing for you!

MAYDAY Help create and stage the MayDay Parade and Festival next year. Hundreds of positions are available during April and on the day of the event including workshop assistants, festival set-up and strike crews, booth staffing and parade marshals.

SATURDAY PUPPET SHOWS Help host families as they come to see a kid-friendly puppet show in our lobby. Activities include moving tables, chairs and sets, and greeting folks as they arrive.

We offer a different show every week!

MAKE ‘N’ TAKE ASSISTANTS Hone your artistic skills as you help children and families make puppets or masks. A wide variety of opportunities are available, from Saturday Make ‘n’ Take workshops to off-site field trips.

BOARD COMMITTEES We welcome long-term volunteers who are looking for a more in-depth experience. If you have skills and an interest in fundraising, budgeting, the legal field, or neighborhood issues, join one of the Board committees.
