Deal Me Out Black Market Study

A recent study conducted by Deal Me Out suggests that 67% of 100 people they surveyed who have used the black-market and have lived experience of gambling addiction were using it to get around GAMSTOP. Our own extensive independent evaluation of GAMSTOP conducted in 2024 by Ipsos, a leading global research agency, found that 8% of more than 4,600 users said they had used unlicensed or illegal gambling sites. While the activities of blackmarket operators are a concern, it is important we rely on robust data, based on a substantial sample size, to understand the scale of the problem and keep the issue in perspective.

GAMSTOP Data Retention Policy Impact

A reminder that, from 25th October 2025 onwards, we will start to archive consumers’ personal data following 7 years of inactivity after the removal or expiry of their minimum exclusion period (6 months, 1 year or 5 years) in line with our Consumer Privacy Policy. A full explanation document and a set of FAQs is available on the Operator Portal. If have any specific questions at this stage, please send them to support@gamstop.co.uk.

Registrations by Country

Registrations rebounded in March to exceed January’s record for the highest monthly figure ever.

While registrations by country and gender have remained steady between Q1 2024 and Q1 2025, a distinct shift towards registrants under the age of 25 can be observed, as well as an increase in 6-month registrations. This increase in under-25s forms part of a wider trend in GAMSTOP registrations which shows no signs of slowing.

2025 has had record-breaking registrations so far, with 4 out of 5 months setting new highs for monthly volumes: most recently, May saw 10,345 registrations.

GAMSTOP’S YEAR SO FAR IN CONFERENCES & MEDIA

Conferences and Events

Gamstop Group CMO Katie Reynolds-Jones represented GAMSTOP at Gibraltar’s Ethical Gambling Forum in April, appearing on the ‘Collaboration is Key’ panel alongside other representatives of gambling support organisations.

In May, our CEO Fiona Palmer attended Discovery 2025 in Toronto, sharing her experience of developing and running the UK’s national online self-exclusion scheme, and presenting the important work we are doing with GamProtect to ensure vulnerable consumers are protected from gambling harm.

GAMSTOP and Ara Recovery

For All ran a series of events across Wales during June, with treatment providers, local services, and public health organisations in attendance. Each four-hour session focused on awareness of gamblingrelated harm, lived experience stories, and the tools and support available.

In January, SBC Leaders Magazine published an article with Fiona discussing the benefits of cross-sector collaboration in the safer gambling space.

March began with the release of the Student Gambling Survey report in collaboration with Ygam, receiving widespread news coverage in publications including the Times and the Sun.

In the same month, Katie

Case Study

Deb’s story highlights a lifelong struggle with gambling addiction, culminating in recovery through support, treatment, and tools like GAMSTOP.

My advice to others is to build a strong defence against gambling by using tools like GAMSTOP and seeking support

Consumer Voices

Deb first gambled at 10 on penny machines on family holidays, and at 34, online gambling emerged. She spent all of her money on online gambling due to the lack of restrictions. By 37, Deb was bankrupt, divorced, and drowning in debt. With little support in place at the time for female gamblers, she hit rock bottom in 2018 and attempted suicide. Crisis intervention and residential treatment at Gordon Moody helped her find hope and start her recovery.

A turning point came when Deb signed up to GAMSTOP, making online gambling less accessible. Though she tried to circumvent it, her exclusion remained - and ultimately saved her life. When the initial five years were up, she renewed it immediately.

Now, Deb works in the recovery sector, supporting women who have experienced similar struggles, and advocating for tools like GAMSTOP. Her advice? Build barriers, seek support, and commit to change before gambling takes control.

You can learn more about Deb’s story here, and in the video below.
