NO DISSENT NO SIN BIN The History Book Theclubwasfoundedin1919astheRoyalEngineers(OrdnanceSurveyOffice)FCby soldiersreturningfromtheFirstWorldWar,althoughthereisarecordofmatchesbeing playedbyOrdnanceSurveyRoyalEngineersvsTheGentlemenofTenbyin1888.
TheclubjoinedtheSouthamptonJuniorLeaguein1919,andwontheJuniorBdivisionin 1920/21andwereadmittedtotheHampshireLeagueDivisionalSection,whichwasajunior leaguewithnoautomaticrighttopromotion ThedivisionalsectionwassplitintoEastand Westthefollowingyear,withtheclubfinishingmid-tableintheEastDivision.Nicknamed ‘TheMapmakers’,it’sbelievedtheclubmergedwiththePostOfficeteam,whentheymoved totheCivilServiceGroundandformedanewclub,SouthamptonCivilServicein1923/24. Thatyear,thenewlyformedclubfinishedfourthintheWestDivision.
TheRoyalEngineers(OSO)splitfromtheCivilServicesidethefollowingyear,butthe Engineerspickedupwheretheyleftoff,finishingasrunners-upintheWestDivisionin 1924/25,1pointbehindTotton Again,therewasnoautomaticentrytotheHampshire CountyDivisiontothefrustrationofbothclubs In1929,theclubsimplifiedit’snameto OrdnanceSurvey,butstruggledinthebottom3or4placesintheleague,reachingrock bottomofDivisionTwoin1930/31,but6thoutof14thefollowingseason Afterfinishingthird frombottomin1933/34,theclubslippedoutofcountyfootball,returningtothe SouthamptonSeniorLeague.Thisexilefromcountyfootballwouldgoontolast64years.
Successbecamehardtocomeby,apartfromthereserveswinningtheJuniorBCupin1937. TheclubswitchtoSundayLeaguefootballfrom1960to1966,thenreturnedtoSaturday Football,re-joiningSouthamptonJuniorDivision8.Theclubswiftlyworkedit’swaythrough heranks,andachievedpromotiontothePremierDivisionforashortspellin1973.Theclub wontheSeniorDivisionOnetitletwicein1982/83and1992/93,alongsidethereservesonce
Theclubgrewinsizefromthatpointonwards,forminga3rdXIandaVeteran’sXI.The veteranssidehadmuchsuccesswinningJuniorDivision6in1996andgainedsuccessive promotionsbeforebecomingfoundingmembersofthenowverypopularVeteransLeague. ThefirstteamwontheSeniorPremierDivisionin1996/97,whichfinallytookthembackto countyfootball Theclubmissedoutonauniquetreble-eachtimetheyhavejoinedthe leagueintheirownright,theyhavefinishedrunners-upintheirfirstseason Inboth1921/22 and1924/25,thisfeatwasaccomplished,butwere2pointsshortofarepeatin1997/98 This wasquicklyputrightthefollowingseasonastheyfinishedrunnersuptoClanfieldand gainedpromotiontothenewlyformedHampshirePremierLeagueDivisionOne.Bynow,the clubrealisedthatastablefuturelayinthehandsofyoungplayersandsetupayouth section,startingwithanU16side,movingintoU18intheir2ndyear.Thisprovedagreat success,withtheU18'swinningSouthamptonYouthDivision3atthefirstattempt.Thesame year,theveteransgainedpromotiontoDivision2,aswellaswinningtheVeteransCup.
Eventhough1998/99wasagreatseasonfortheclubonthepitch,aneraendedastheCivil ServiceGroundwasclosedattheendoftheseason Fortunately,withhelpwiththelocal council,‘Survey’wererelocatedtoLordshillRecreationGround Thiswasonlytobea temporaryhome,astheclubmovedtotheirnewhomeatStonehamParkin2002
TheFirstDivisionoftheHampshireLeagueprovedtobetoostrong,withtheclubrelegated intheirfirstseasonatthehigherlevelin1999/00.Positionsof11th,8th,4thand6thwere reachedbeforetheformationoftheWessexLeagueDivisionThreein2004/05.Theteam finished13thand12th,beforeopeninganewchapterintheclubshistory-changingits nametoStonehamin2006.
Afterfinishing14thintheWessexLeagueDivisionTwoin2006/07,theclubbecamefounding members,alongside16others,oftheHampshirePremierLeaguewhichwassetupfollowing thedissolutionoftheWessexLeaguebottomdivision Duringthe2007closeseasontheclub decidedtoenhanceit’snewidentitybyadding‘AFC’toStoneham.Thishadanimmediate effect,withAFCStonehamwinningtheHampshirePremierLeagueinthe2007/08season, whilstalsoreachingtheSeniorLeagueCupfinal,justmissingoutonanimpressivedouble. 2009/10sawtheSeniorLeagueCupaddedtothehonourslistwhiletheU16teamwon SouthamptonYouthDivision3.Furthersuccessfollowedin2011/12,havingmovedonce againtoJubileeParkthepreviousseason,withthereservescompletingaleagueandcup doubleandtheU16'sonceagainwinningtheleague-a3rdyearinarow!Thiswasthe sameyearthefirstteammadetheirfirsttriptoSt Mary’sfortheSouthamptonSeniorCup final,beatingBushHilltoachievetheirhighesthonourtodate
TheclubmergedwithGranleyRoversFC,incorporatingacompleteyouthsetupwhich wouldnowprovidefootballfromminnowsthroughtoveterans.Thesuccesstheprevious seasonwascontinuedin2012/13whentheclubjoinedanelitelistofclubstoretainthe SouthamptonSeniorCup,beatingBrockenhurstonpenaltiesinthefinal.TheU18'swonthe SouthamptonYouthDivision2andmanyoftheclubsnow17teamsreachedfinalsand semi-finals,whilstalsofinishinginhighleaguepositions.In2015,theclubearnedpromotion totheWessexLeague,aswellaswinningtheHampshirePremierLeagueCupforasecond time AFCStonehamfinished8thintheirfirstseasonintheWessexLeagueDivisionOneand ouryouthteamswontheTestwayLeagueCupatbothU15andU16level,whiletheU18 HampshireLeagueteamwontheHampshireYouthLeagueCup Wealsosawourfirst Women’steamcompeteintheHampshireWomen’sDivisionOne
Moreprogressoffthepitchin2016/17,astheclubturnedontheirnewfloodlightsonOctober 6th2016 ThefirstteamventuredintotheFAVaseforthefirsttimeinourhistory,claiming winsagainstMalmesburyVictoria(Wiltshire)andLonglevens(Gloucestershire)bothfrom theHellenicLeague,beforelosingtoShaftesbury.
Inthesameseason,StonehambeatAldershotTown5-0intheRussellCotesCup,before losingtoSouthernLeaguePremiersideGosportBorough3-2inthequarterfinalandwent outatthesamestageintheHampshireSeniorCup,losing2-0atBasingstokeTown.Our reserves,withtheemphasisnowverymuchondevelopingyoungtalentfromtheclubs youthsystem,reachedthefinaloftheWyvernCombinationLeagueCup,losing2-1to SouthernLeaguePetersfieldTown Thefirstteamfinished8thonceagainintheWessex LeagueDivisionOne
2017/18sawAFCStonehamimprovetheirleaguepositionto5thandreachingthefinalof theRussellCotesCup,losingtoWessexLeaguePremierDivisionchampionsAndoverTown 1-0,attheirPortwayStadiuminfrontofa500+crowd.Theclubenjoyedmemorablenights onthewaytothefinal,winning4-3atAFCPortchesterinthequarterfinaland3-1atAFC Tottoninthesemi-final.Duringthe2018/19seasonthefirstteamrecordedarunof20 leaguegameswithoutdefeat,onlyoneof3teamsatourlevelinthecountrytodoso,aswe pushedforpromotiontotheWessexLeaguePremierDivision.
Forthefirsttimeinour100yearhistory,weenteredtheFACupasoneofthelowestranked teamsinthecompetitionandhadtremendouswins,3-0atAFCPorchesterafterareplay and2-0athometoEvo-StikSouthside,Westfield Sadlyouradventureendedinthehands ofCirencesterTowninthenextroundathome,infrontofa350+strongcrowd.Priortothe CirencesterTowngame asthelowestrankedteamleftinthecompetition wehadavisit
astheseasonwasdeemednullandvoid InJanuary2020,theclubmovedtoournew£10m homeatStonehamLane,stillusingtheoldChestnutAvenuegroundforpre-season friendliesbeforeitssadclosureinOctober2020 Itwillalwaysholdfantasticmemorieswith hugeaffection,astheplacethatallowedtheclubtowriteitsmostrecenthistoryandgrow.
Season2020/21wasalsoimpactedbythepandemic,withupwardmovementbasedon performanceoverthelast2seasons.StonehamlostoutonaplaceintheSouthernLeague toLymingtonTown.OurfirstfullseasonintheWessexLeaguePremierDivisionsawtheclub finish5th,followedbymissingoutonpromotionin2022/23ongoaldifference.In2023/24, theclubfinishedin2nd,losingtheplay-offfinaltoShaftesbury.
The2024/25hadastrongsenseofdéjàvuasfarastheleagueseasonwasconcerned-we finished2 again,finishingon90+pointsforthethirdsuccessiveseason,thistimelosingin theplay-offsemifinaltoAndoverNewStreet However,thiswillalwaysbeaseason rememberedforourcupexploits.ThedreamofreachingWembleywasverymuchalivein theFAVase,reachingthefurtheststageinourclubshistory,eventuallylosingoutto AndoverNewStreetonpenaltiesinthequarterfinalsafterleadingforthemajorityofthe game.The1 teamalsoreached3othercupfinals,winningtheHampshireSeniorCupfor theveryfirsttimeinourhistory,convincinglyvsWessexPremierDivisionchampionsAFC Porchester,3-0.Anothertrophywasaddedtothecabinetamonthlater,asweliftedthe SouthamptonSeniorCupforathirdtime,withanother3-0victory,thistimeagainst MillbrookatSt Mary’s
