This traditional photo lab stepped out of the darkroom - into the digital revolution…

‘The Darkroom’ in Cheltenham, who are specialists in photographic production – using conventional film processing and their other specialist services – are in great demand, working with local companies and artists in the Cotswolds.

Seeing a niche to diversify in the marketplace, they wanted to create a more ‘on-demand’ service to satisfy the needs of their artist customers for greeting cards and postcards, along with meeting the needs of tourist visitors to Cheltenham, wanting to purchase postcards depicting local scenes.

Having researched the current printer market, they felt the Intec ColorSplash range would meet their needs perfectly. The ability to run heavier stock creating high quality color output, really put Intec in the frame!

Alistair Baird and Barrie A Roberts, directors of ‘The Darkroom’, went to see the printers in action at the Intec HQ in Poole, UK. Liking what they saw they signed up, there and then!

In the three months since installation, The Darkroom has seen a good increase in sales from both their portfolio of artists and also their public customers.

European update

Intec personnel have made many trips to European partners this month…

La Reprografica has been appointed as our partner for the ColorSplash product range in Italy.

La Reprografica were founded in 1966 and have an envious reputation for quality and service.

With a head office based in Varese just north of Milan they provide Ricoh multi function devices and Canon large format printers.

“We saw the Intec envelope printing system as a great opportunity to expand our operations and engage

with new customers” says Bruno Franceschini managing director.

“Printing envelopes at high speed in a wide range of sizes and styles including window envelopes is an amazing application and we have received a great deal of interest from potential customers, not only can we print full color but also add white and clear which looks incredible”.

Intec completed the technical and sales training when Andy Withall and Kerry Button visited for 3 days in June. “I am delighted to welcome La Reprografica as a valued partner and I’m extremely excited about the opportunity they have with the Intec range in the Italian market”, comments Kerry.

completed the sales and system training with the Solex team. “It’s important for us to engage with the right partners and we select our dealers carefully”, comments Kerry.

Continuing our ‘Master Class’ series, to help you get the very best from your Intec equipment, this is part three of an in-depth mulit-part series on ‘Advanced Color Control’.

We outline some key steps to take within the Fiery® RIP for accurate spot color control.

Building upon steps explained in previous issues, we aim to bring total color control within everyday reach of your Intec printing experience.

Handling Spot colors in the Intec FieryXF RIP

Last month we looked at what makes spot colors different, and that different printing techniques such as litho printing with wet ink, versus digital technologies with dry toner can result in different colors despite the same CMYK values being used.

Understanding spot colors is key to being able to print them correctly.

When you receive a print job from a customer, your file will contain the color names used within that job, and often the CMYK mix of how the color is created. But as described above, this may not give you the match you are looking for.

Therefore, the most accurate way to describe color, is to know the L*a*b value of that color. Unlike the RGB and CMYK color models, L*a*b color is designed to approximate human vision. It is created by using a device called a Color Spectrophotometer, which shines light on to your color – as the light bounces back, it is passed through a prism fig 1, splitting the colors into their individual components.

This gives us the true or real value for that color, (the L*a*b values). fig 11 fig

What IS a spot color? Tackling color profiles, achieving the color you want with the Fiery RIP

Your print jobs arrive on the RIP with only the default color name or CMYK values so the RIP will use these values by default.

However the FieryXF for Intec RIP has over 32,000 Color L*a*b values in ‘look-up‘ tables so for the best possible color match in the RIP, you should enable FieryXF for Intec’s advanced ability to look up the ‘real’ spectral data (L*a*b values) of the color to give you the most accurate match possible.

To start using the Spot color look up tables it is crucial that you enable ‘In-RIP Separation’, you also need to do this, if you wish to define your own spot colors. If you do not, then you may revert to using the default CMYK data originally used to describe the color you are aiming to print.

within the RIP, OR use the correct queue. You can ensure success as follows: From the Intec FieryXF RIP, fig 2, check the [FILE] group, and under the option [PS/EPS/PDF] select the InRIP separation: menu, and ensure it is set to ENABLE. The default setting is ‘Disable’. Which means the CMYK values used to describe the color will be used.

ENABLE means, the RIP will look up the color name, and cross reference it with the Color Look up tables, IF it finds that color, it will use the L*a*b value and map it to the printer’s color space for the most accurate match of that color.

Other key advantages to having a RIP to drive your Intec printer.

One common problem, is that you are not always in control of your jobs, and often they are supplied from outside designers. In some cases customers may have edited old artwork and failed to keep the colors consistent.

Under the INTEC RED color, change the source from CMYK, to actually point to the PANTONE® library, and again select the color you wish to map it to. Now, all the colors in your job will come out correctly, and all exactly the same shade as well!

We can clearly see that PANTONE RED 032 U and also PANTONE® RED 032 C, plus ‘Intec RED’, all appear in the job, fig 5 – and will probably all print differently. ®

Using the SPOT colors window, we can re-map incorrect colors. In other words, we can change, link or redirect any color in the list of colors so that it will produce the desired color (in this case - we want it to be the same as one of the existing REDs) without having to edit the customers artwork.

Simply select the color you wish to remap, fig 6. and choose [SOURCE], under the MAP TO column, then

So, to ensure we get a great color match, we can create a custom spot color in the RIP, to match the name used in the artwork application. In our example fig 8, we called it ‘CRIPPS ORANGE’.

Perfecting Spot colors in the FieryXF for Intec RIP In addition to matching existing Pantone® colors or remapping incorrect colors within a job, you can also use the Intec FieryXF RIP’s Color Editor to modify or create spot colors.

With the Intec FieryXF RIP, we can see all the colors used in the job. To do this, click on the Color Library and select the SPOT Colors section.

Here, you will need the optional ES-2000 Color Spectrophotometer fig 7 (contact sales for pricing). The ES-2000 Color Spectrophotometer, connects into the Intec RIP for a WIZARD-driven experience to make adjusting colors, creating spot colors (or even creating profiles), a smooth and easy task. fig 7

Using the ‘COLOR EDITOR’ and our ES-2000 Color Spectrophotometer, click the [COLOR EDITOR] tool which is included in all versions of the Intec Fiery RIP. Click [Add NEW Spot Color]. Then enter the name of the spot color (the name you used in your applications… in this example; CRIPPS ORANGE).

You will also have the option to add a description of your color, should you need to be reminded of it’s significance or determine between similar colors. Then click [MEASURE].

Imagine your customer brings you a printed letterhead and a PDF with a custom Spot Color such as ‘CRIPPS ORANGE’. He wants you to match it, but last time it was printed on a litho press. We already know that WET Offset CMYK ink color mixes are

Master Class #3.3…Continued of making a spot color - asking you to measure a patch of the EXISTING spot color sample you have.

Use the ES-2000 to measure the patch fig 9, (previous page), and display the L*a*b values, for your patch. fig 10, shows that our ‘CRIPPS ORANGE’ letterhead, (which was printed using Pantone® 021 U), has its L*a*b value displayed. fig 11

Now, simply save your newly created Spot color – it’s as simple as that!

From this point on, each time you send a job with your named color, instead of the CMYK values that were pre-defined in your application being used, fig 11, the RIP will automatically change the CMYK values, to the real L*a*b values needed to map your color inside your printer’s colorspace for the best possible match, fig 12.

Shannon comes from a strong accounting background after working in accounts for over 20 years. Her day-to-day role will involve supporting the company in its usual activities from stock control requirements, ensuring there are enough printers and consumables to keep the customer base happy, and ensuring that the books are balanced!

During her 20 year working life, Shannon also found time to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, so is very well positioned to support the company activities and will be

expanding her experience with the day-to-day running of the Intec USA office.
