Welcome to Edition 41 of InTallaght
Saoirse Ronan is without doubt one of our biggest stars, a genuine Hollywood actress with talent to burn, yet she still remains down to earth and level headed. We were delighted to meet up with her recently and you can read what she had to say in the main interview in this edition. The band Morrissey and Marshall are two local lads on the verge of stardom who released their debut single this month. Now based in London, we managed to nab them on a recent visit home to Dublin just before they made their first live appearance on national TV. We have our fingers crossed that Darren and Greg make their big breakthrough and we wish them both the very best of luck with their careers. InRovers has an exclusive interview with new Hoops signing Richie Ryan, a very talented midfielder and wonderful addition to the Rovers team. We also feature an interview with Macdara Ferris and Karl Reilly who are the authors of “Tallaght Time” a new book which covers the history of the club over the last four years. Red Line Book Festival returns to celebrate the written word
Built on the success from their annual Readers Day over the past 10 years, South Dublin Libraries put together the Red Line Book Festival for the first time last year. It proved to be a resounding success, with around 40 Irish and international authors and journalists attending. The festival is an exiting opportunity for book lovers to engage and meet with their favourite authors. It highlights both Irish and international contemporary authors, celebrating books, reading, and the written word.

Your Mam and Dad were clearly very involved, particularly at the early stages of your career, how has that changed now? I presume you are now more independent in how you choose scripts, has your professional relationship with them altered over the years? Saoirse Ronan first graced InTallaght’s front cover way back in May 2011, on our third edition, and since then the 19 year old’s star has been on the rise. InTallaght met Ronan during the Galway Film Fleadh. She spoke to us about her professional relationship with her parents as she grows older, her various film roles, what she hopes to do in the future and her Tallaght connections.
What is your first memory of a film set?
Well my dad is an actor and he started when I was a baby so I was used to going on sets to visit him. I remember, I think it was when we moved back to Ireland because I was born in New York and that was where he started acting but when we were back in Ireland I think there was an army barracks. It was a very very Irish film to say the least, that he was working on and I remember it was really loud that day and everyone was just running around. I was probably about two or three at the time.
What was the first set you were on that you were actually working on?
I had done a couple of TV shows, I did The Clinic. I was in the first season of that and I just had a little part but it was great, I felt at home and I’ve kind of felt that way ever since.
The Oscar ceremony 2008, what do you remember most about that night?
I was knackered because I had just flown in from New Zealand where I was doing The Lovely Bones and we had already been shooting it for about five months at that stage so there was a lot going on. But it was an amazing time and I would love to go back again even just as a fly on the wall to really appreciate it, because I was so young when I went and there was so much going
on. It was amazing but it is a lot to take in. It’s the biggest film event you will ever go to, but it was great. I mean, you are on the red carpet for two and a half hours and I was 13, didn’t wear heels, then suddenly I was put in these little Jimmy Choo shoes and my feet were killing me. Then we got inside and everyone was starving.
What attracted you to the role of Susie Salmon in The Lovely Bones and did you read the book?
I was quite calm about it, Mam was crying and Dad was just jumping about the house. It was brilliant but we all kind of had different reactions to it. So yeah, it was great but it was the same for Atonement. We were in the car when we got the
I think it has been a pretty natural progression. We all kind of understand where the other one is coming from and we have all sort of had a role to play, but they’re brilliant and they always have been great when it has come to me choosing what scripts I do. Their role in that really was most definitely to keep an eye out for anything of a sexual nature or something that would put me in an awkward position. I mean they still read scripts and it’s just great to get another person’s opinion, especially when it’s someone you really trust.
Your parents have kept you very grounded, you wouldn’t know you had been through these huge film experiences because of the way you behave as a person. What advice would you give to a young person that goes into the film industry?
I think you need to have a good head on your shoulders. I think you need to know that it’s ok to say no and that you don’t need to please everyone all the time. I think that’s more to do with the whole social

aspect as well but also like what I was saying about scenes of a sexual nature, you can say no and there are things that can be worked around.
Can you recognise the time when the life of Saoirse Ronan, a normal teenage girl growing up around Carlow became something totally different?
Yeah I guess it was around the time that Atonement came out because there was so much attention surrounding the film and there was with me at home as well. I mean, my state of mind never changed and I never changed my perspective on anything. It was a big thing and there was a lot of attention and it can be a lot to deal with. Ireland is fantastic because of the people. Nobody has ever been negative towards me and I’ve never had anyone come up to me and not be nice, only well wishers have approached me. I do feel I have received amazing support from Ireland.
Is the attitude to fame and celebrity here different than anywhere else you have been?
Well compared to America, yes. I mean we are very traditional type of people here and are very family orientated and that goes back to generations before us and that has influenced how we view that whole celeb world. I think it’s mad, I don’t feel like I am a part of it at all. It is very interesting to see how certain people are really affected by it and you do get it everywhere.
The Host was touted as the next Twilight but it didn’t do as well as expected. Were you relieved that you wouldn’t be surrounded by that attention?
Yeah absolutely, that would have been too much. I think there is a way to handle it but when you see it from the outside and when The Host came out the possibility of it going the same way is scary, but that didn’t happen so it’s fine.
Did you have a sense on set that this movie wasn’t going to reach the heights that everyone had guessed it would,? It wasn’t well received by the critics either, how do you handle that?
To be honest I wasn’t expecting it to be the next Twilight movie and obviously every journalist you spoke to was expecting it to be the next Twilight. I was alright, I mean, I made great friends out of it and to be honest when I was shooting I wasn’t thinking of any of that stuff. You never do. At the end of the day you can only do your job. Unfortunately it just didn’t work out.
In 2011 we saw you as Hanna when you teamed up with Joe Wright to play that title character. When you read the script what excited you most about the part?
She kicks butt. She was just like a machine. She was a weirdo and I loved that she was so strange. She had been kept away from civilisation her whole life and I was just fascinated that she was basically an
experiment and that was the heartache of the whole story.
You played Eleanor in Neil Jordan’s vampire film Byzantium, what did you make of the way he told that story?
I loved it. We were talking about this earlier and it was kind of taking the vampire tale back to what it was before Twilight and True Blood. I mean I was nervous because there had been so many vampire films and there still are a lot being made and I didn’t necessarily want to be part of that group, if you know what I mean. Not in a bad way, just there had been a lot of it done. Then I read the script and it basically focuses on the story and the relationship between these two young women Eleanor and her mother. Neil Jordan is also great because he really appreciates the imagery and wants to make it look really beautiful but he is always aware of what the actors are doing, and you can tell he appreciates what you are doing too.
Would you have any interest in other roles in the movie industry because you speak pretty passionately about directing?
Who is your role model both male and female?
Meryl Streep obviously because of her career and her longevity, and other older actresses who had stood the test of time and have always chosen character pieces as opposed to the girl next door or a sexy lady, which there is nothing wrong with. It’s just it’s always great to see a woman like Meryl or Helen Mirren or Kate Blanchett and Laura Linney who really care about acting and it’s very much a craft for them. My male role model would have to be my Dad.
Does theatre work interest you?
Yes I would love to do it. I’m terrified about doing it but I would love to do it.
What sort of part would attract you?
I don’t know! I loved The Seagull. I really did love that play, but anything at all. I wouldn’t mind doing something small that maybe not many people see in case I mess up. I mean my Dad started in theatre. You are on stage every night and it’s live and you can’t mess up and there are no second takes but then at the same time there are no wires, there are no cameras, as such it’s just you and that other actor.

Yes, the Americans love the Irish. I find that my accent has gotten stronger and stronger over the years. Eventually people won’t be able to understand me when I step out of Ireland. My family are from Dublin so I was always surrounded by Dubs even in New York, so that was the sound I was listening to. But yes they do love it over there and they are kind of charmed by it.
What do you do in your spare time to switch off?

18 Greg didn't sing much at the start, I was the lead singer and he was the lead guitarist, which he is brilliant at. It was only when we moved to London and we didn't have a band behind us that we started to harmonize throughout the songs and it just worked.

Who are your influences?
Darren: The Everly Brothers, The
Greg Morrissey and Darren Marshall are a musical duo from Tallaght who just released their first single I've Got A Plan. We met up with them in the RTÉ studios ahead of their recent appearance on the Saturday Night With Miriam Show to find out more. I absolutely love the single, where did the idea for it come from?
Darren:It just came from an idea

Greg: Yeah, I was a bit worse for wear and thought I could do a better job of the singing than him! Darren: The two of us singing together sounded alright so we decided to get something going.
Beatles, The Kinks, a lot of the good 90's stuff like Ocean Colour Scene, The La's, The Coral, Oasis, The Verve have had a massive influence on us and we have incorporated the 60's harmony sound. Luke Kelly also, another massive influence.
Your cover of his tune The Nightvisiting Song is one of the best covers of any Luke song I've ever heard. I'd recommend readers to check it out. Darren: Thanks very much. We
also do a cover of The Sun Is Burning which we think is even better, we plan to record it. Simon And Garfunkel did a version of it as well so we want to mix the two. It's our way of paying tribute to Luke who we feel is one of the greatest singers ever.
You guys are based in London now, why did you decide to leave Dublin?
Darren: This is going to sound
really arsey but we kind of had to move away to perfect what we wanted to do. There are more venues in London, more people, more of a potential audience. At the same time, while we were perfecting it in London it was the Irish, the Dubs who really got behind us and supported us.

Do you miss Dublin?
Both: Yeah. It's great to get home
for a weekend Darren: I just feel places like here don't do enough to support Irish music. If they dedicated more time to playing Irish musicians than they do to Daft Punk it'd be a start! Even look at Tallaght and the amount of seriously talented accomplished musicians and bands that come from the area. I remember a few years ago thinking that if you took about five or six of the best bands in the area and plonked them in Camden town you would have a really good scene.
You lads have been supporting some big names recently?
Greg: We just supported the Magic
Numbers in a few gigs in the UK and they've asked us to go on tour with them. How it came about was we were just doing a sound check in a bar in Camden and their drummer was there, pissed! He heard our soundcheck, which only lasted a minute, came up to us and asked for our number because he wanted to get in touch. They're really lovely people, they've helped us out so much. Darren: They started getting us gigs and stuff and let us jam with them, then they said they want us to tour with them. We've supported Steve Craddock (Ocean Colour Scene lead singer) as well, which was unbelievable considering we're both such fans of his. He is sound, a brilliant man and he also has been such a great help. We played at Liam and Noel Gallagher's brother Paul's wedding recently and Gem (Ex Oasis and Beady Guitarist) came up to us after we played saying he loved it and would love to do something with us when he finishes up the latest Beady Eye tour.
Away from music what are your other interests? Darren: We're both massive Man-
chester United fans. My Dad is also a huge fan and he used to bring me to matches from when I was about two! I used to get to a good few matches but since we've got busier with the band it's been much harder to get the time as obviously the weekends are our busiest time. We did a tune with Chris Kamara which was great craic! He's a hero, he was dead sound. My ambition is to get on to Soccer AM, I love talking about football! Greg: Yeah me too! Finally, what are your thoughts on the appointment of David Moyes?
Greg: I'm happy, there was no-
body else available who was going to stick around. Darren: Yeah, Mourinho would've been great for the first few years then he would have got bored and f*cked off. Moyes is the right man, I'm happy with him. Next season might be a bit tricky but United fans are just going to have to realise we're not going to win the league every year. Greg: Getting off to a good start is going to be so important. The first five games are tough, I never remember United having such a difficult set of fixtures at the beginning of a season. You just know if they lose a couple of them the pressure will be on.

Marathon Man
Jack Martin, Director of Retail here at The Square will be pounding the pavements over the next few months in preparation for the Dublin City Marathon. The marathon takes place on Monday October 28, and will cover the traditional 26 miles, starting and finishing in the city centre. Jack has done some charity runs in the past, but this will be his first time over the marathon distance. He doesn’t expect to be troubling the leaders - his only aim is to get around the course and raise as much money as possible for the National Children’s Hospital, The Square’s charity of choice. Glenn O’Brien Student Union President Glenn has been elected by the students of IT Tallaght to represent them on a local level with the likes of the Governing Body and Academic Councils and all the way up to national level representing the students of IT Tallaght at National Councils with the Union of Students in Ireland. His responsibilities include ensuring that the Union stays on track with proposed objectives and duties. This year, one of Glenn and the Student Union’s main objectives is to work closely with businesses and people in the community to get Tallaght more involved and tie everything together. The main people who help Glenn in the running of the Students Union are Eoin, the Education Officer, Karen, the Welfare Officer and Pauline who is the Student Union. Pauline is an encyclopedia on college information and has great advice when it comes to all round college life. There are also four part-time officers who organise the entertainment, look after the clubs, societies and equality issues.

There are a large number of new Freshers coming in from the 6th of September, so Glenn and the rest of the Student Union Team would like to welcome them and hope they enjoy their college life in ITT. Fresher’s Week starts the last week of September to give the new students a taste of college life. This is a whole week of various events from bouncy castles to comedians to having international artists over for a night out. This week also
includes Clubs & Societies sign up days. Clubs & Societies are the best way to make new friends, try new activities and are a very enjoyable break from the studies throughout the year. One piece of advice Glenn gives is to find the balance between your studies and socialising but never neglect one. Glenn, Eoin and Karen have been working very closely over the summer months to make this an amazing year for the students. Eoin Dunne VP/Education Officer
Eoin is the new VP/ Education Officer at IT Tallaght Students Union. Eoin represents the students interests on all educational and academic matters for the year ahead. It can range from problems with CA’s, schedules, class timetables, exams and any conflicts that arise in class between students and lecturers.
Eoin’s office is located in the Student Union building; students can come over to our building to chill out, relax and either watch a movie or play some pool. He will have a strict open door policy so anyone can come in and have a chat with him about anything that is bothering them. Eoin’s office is also the bookshop; students can buy second hand textbooks here for a fraction of their original cost. This year Eoin will be trying to bring in a laptop scheme where students can buy second hand laptops for college, we all know how expensive laptops can be but in Eoin’s opinion they are very useful to have throughout college life.
Eoin will also be running exam stress and tips campaigns during the winter and summer exams, Eoin will also be organising a well run and efficient class reps campaign, he will be going around and getting each class to elect one person to represent that class. Class reps are critically important, they are our eyes and ears in the classroom.
Eoin is 22 years old from Belgard Heights in Tallaght. He has just completed his honours degree in Marketing last May. Eoin spent 4 years in IT Tallaght and has loved every minute of it. In Eoin’s opinion ‘the unique aspect about ITT is that it isn’t as big as Trinity or UCD; you can make long lasting relationships with everyone in your class which will only consist of roughly 40 people. The lectures are more intimate and personal as you can interact with the lecturer and feel you are being listened to. Eoin is truly envious of all the new first years starting as it will be the best 4 years of your life.’
Karen Campbell ITT Student Welfare Officer
Karen is the IT Tallaght Student Welfare Officer. Karen’s job is to deal with any issues students may have such as; • The wellbeing of a student • The Student Assistance Fund • Childcare assistance • Grant issues and advice • Bullying and mental health • Bereavement • Drugs and alcohol abuse • Crisis pregnancy • Sexual health and contraception • Personal issues
When starting college students may be unsure of who to talk to, Karen’s door will always be open to offer the support and advice students need. There are some great services here at IT Tallaght and making sure the students know where to go to and who to talk to is so important.
The Students Union is located just across from the main building. As a full time Welfare officer this year Karen hopes students will pop over Eoin added, ‘We are here to help and say hello and engage with and assist the students now and them. It is the job of the Union to will do our very best to represent represent IT Tallaght students and they are fully committed as a you and make your voice heard.’ Student Union to provide the best support for the students.
Karen said, ‘If it wasn’t for the students of IT Tallaght who voted for me I would not have the job I have this year. I’m going to try my very hard to be the best welfare officer I can be and I really want to reach out to students this year.’
When moving from Secondary School to College it can be an exciting but anxious time for students. Many Students are concerned about making friends but there are some great clubs and societies here in college that are delighted to welcome new members. Karen would encourage all students to get involved. “If students are unsure of anything throughout the year they can always speak to Glenn, Eoin or myself, we are all very approachable people and we genuinely will do our very best to help.”
Karen is 25 and has just finished four years here at IT Tallaght and has completed an Honors Degree in Marketing. She really wanted to be a welfare officer to reach out to students and be a female representative on the students union. Karen is from Crumlin but she says she really does love the community spirit here in Tallaght.

5 A DAY TIPS When the bell rings
• Buy small, sweet apple varieties, but don’t serve apples every single day! Alternate with other fruit to keep it interesting. • Invest in some smaller, sealable tubs or pots, and include mixed blueberries and raspberries. Always check to see which are the best fruits in-season.
Eating their greens
• Start them early and shovel the ‘greenery’ into pitta pockets and sandwiches alike. If you keep putting it in, they may even get tired of trying to pick it out, and eat it! The sandwich is a brilliant way to get green leafy veg on to the menu, unless you are blessed with children who actively engage with spinach or asparagus tips.

• If that doesn’t work try some grated carrot, sliced cucumber, finely chopped peppers or whatever they do like. Maybe it’s whole cherry tomatoes. Pile them in. • Make a softer filling, made with hummus and roasted veg for those children that eat less meat.

• Add carrot sticks with dips. Also celery, peppers of all colours, sugar snap or mangetout, cherry tomatoes work well too. • A warm vegetable soup drink is great in colder months, and you can use just about any combination of vegetables. Heat to just below boiling, pour it into a small, warmed flask and it’ll be just the right temperature at lunchtime
What does a serving of fruit or vegetable look like? Fruit
Each of the following is a rough guide to what an adult fruit serving looks like: • 2 smaller fruits such as plums • 14 cherries • 1 handful of berries • 1 medium fruit such as apple or pear • 2 to 3 tablespoons of fresh fruit salad
Children can also be encouraged to eat at least five servings of a variety of fruit and vegetables each day. However the serving size a child needs varies with age, body size and physical activity. As a rough guide, one serving is the amount they can fit in the palm of their hand.
Vegetable
Each of the following is a rough guide to what an adult vegetable serving looks like: • Green vegetables – 2 broccoli spears or 4 heaped tablespoons of kale, spinach, spring greens or green beans. • Cooked vegetables – 3 heaped tablespoons of cooked carrots, peas or sweet corn, or 8 cauliflower florets. • Salad vegetables – 3 sticks of celery, a 5cm piece of cucumber, 1 medium tomato or 7 cherry tomatoes. • Tinned and frozen vegetables – roughly the same quantity as a fresh serving. For example, 3 heaped tablespoons of tinned or frozen carrots, peas or sweet corn.

THE WAY WAY BACK By Rachel Lynch
Everybody has a summer that changes their life.
The Way Way back is a story about the struggles a shy 14 year old boy Duncan faces while on summer holidays with his mother Pam.
Steve Carell takes on the role of Trent, Pam’s overbearing boyfriend. Duncan is having a tough time fitting in. Completely out of his comfort zone while at the local water park one afternoon he meets Owen played by Sam Rockwell, who is manager of the Water Wizz water park.
They strike up an unexpected bond and friendship which continues throughout the movie. Duncan slowly opens up and begins to finally find his place in the world through the humor and loyalty of Owen. Owen then offers the lost teenager a job at the water park where Duncan learns the ways of the world from not only own but other members of staff. As his summer continues, things begin to look up for Duncan. He makes friends at Water Wizz and meets a young girl called Susanne
who he falls in love with.
As the story progresses it is clear to Owen that Duncan is not happy with the situation at home, more specifically his mother’s boyfriend Trent who constantly puts him down. He is also upset about the fact his mother seems to always put him second. From the official trailer alone it is clear there are plenty of humorous moments in store for us but it’s also a poignant coming of age story.
With this calibre of cast I am sure it won’t disappoint, although I was surprised to see Steve Carell play a role of the villain as we are used to him playing the good guy.
The story highlights the ups and downs of a young teenage boy who experiences many life changing moments all during a summer he will never forget.

WE’RE THE MILLERS By Rachel Lynch
Jennifer Aniston stars alongside Jason Sudeikis in a movie that has some harmless comedy mixed with plenty of flesh.
Drug dealer David Clark lives in an apartment block with a number of interesting characters. One evening after supplying his usual customers he returns and gets speaking to his young and hopelessly naïve neighbour, Kenny. Kenny spots local homeless teen Casey being robbed while mid conversation and dashes to her help much to the annoyance of David who must also offer his support.
The youths turn their attention to David when they realise he supplies drugs, they chase him back to his apartment and rob him of money and more importantly his drugs. David’s boss is not impressed when he hears the news and offers him an ultimatum, make a road trip to Mexico to bring back a smidge and a half of marijuana and risk getting caught by the Border Patrol, or he can have his legs broken.
So David decides to set off for Mexico but knows going alone is too risky and believes he must invent a fake family to get the drugs across the border. He enlists the help of Kenny and the homeless girl Casey. He then realises he needs a wife so he approaches his poverty stricken stripper neighbour Rose. They name themselves the Millers.
Together they all set off on adventure that will see them avoid more
than one near death experience but it’s a learning curve for all onboard the top spec holiday camper van. Will they make it across the border? And will they learn to come together as a family before the Mexican cartel tracks them down and kills them? Overall I really enjoyed this movie. Although the storyline is predictable there are plenty of funny moments to keep the audience engaged. What will surprise people most is even though a stripper and drug dealer are the main features of this film, it’s quite conservative and charming. Jennifer Aniston does get down to her lingerie but still nothing too provocative.
When I initially heard Jennifer Aniston was playing the role of a stripper I wasn’t sure whether the role would be quite damning but it’s all quite funny and certainly not awkward viewing.
I would certainly recommend this movie to all. It’s a storyline based on a serious issue yet the whole drug smuggling takes a back seat when the relationships of the Miller family take off.

Shane Filan released his first solo single this month. Everything To Me is written by Shane Filan and Nick Atkinson (Gabrielle Aplin), and produced by Grammy award winning producer Martin Terefe. Shane is known as the former lead singer of Westlife. He, along with the band, sold over 50 million records around the world, but after bidding farewell to their fans in 2012 Shane has been working on his solo career.
Travis’s seventh studio album, entitled Where You Stand, was released this month.
It was produced by their very own record label Red Telephone Box. The Scottish rock band have certainly come a long way from Good Feeling, the band’s debut album back in 1997.
Fran Healy returns to the helm as lead vocalist, with Dougie Payne on bass guitar, Andy Dunlop on lead guitar and Neil Primrose on drums for this highly anticipated studio album. This is their first album release in just over five years.
With 11 brand new tracks the group have certainly been kept busy. The album begins with Mother, the start of which strangely evokes the etheral keyboard of Pure Shores by All Saints. Fran Healy’s unmistakeable voice soon breaks in, accompanied by delicate picking on a guitar. This gives way to chugging piano and a chorus of backing singers and builds to a much more upbeat track than I would have expected from Travis. This is followed by the new wave sounding Moving which is more reminiscent of some of the songs on 1999’s The Man Who. The album continues in a similar manner until the emotive first single and
title track of the album, Where You Stand. This is certainly one of the top tracks on the album and Healy takes centre stage with his delicate vocals. His familiar voice swoops up a lot at the end of phrases which fits the melody perfectly.
Track six, Another Guy, and track nine, On My Wall, are both very different yet similar in the sense that they are reminders of some of Travis’s earlier, rockier music and should be welcomed by their original fans.The lyrics of Boxes are beautiful and the piano adds to the emotion on a whole. The song is about how humans spend most of their lives in containers of one sort or another. Overall the new album is not unrecognisable as Travis but, I do feel long serving fans of the band may question some elements. Certain tracks are quite unlike anything the group have done before. That said fans that have grown up with the band will enjoy the predictable musical direction of a handful of the tracks. Most will agree after a five year long wait they are just happy to see the guys back making music. Bassist Dougie Payne recently told Rolling Stone Magazine that “You stay away as long as it takes, so you feel that hunger and desire to get back to it same as you did at the start.”
His new single will be loved by fans of his former band and, credit where credit is due, he has taken a step forward in terms of modern pop. The sound might come as a surprise to certain fans, but is sure to delight. It is an upbeat and optimistic tune perfect for the summer season. The melody is slow paced yet is quite catchy. The chorus has a slight jazzy feel to it. The video sees Shane surrounded by airhostesses at a plane wreckage yard while he casually dances onboard a rundown plane. Although having listened to the new single a number of times I am consistently reminded of Westlife. Yes, the melody is unique, but his voice for me will always be connected to the boy band. With an album in the works, Shane is giving his fans a taste with his four track EP Everything To Me released on August 30.

Jonathan Ive’s revamp of Apple’s highly anticipated iOS 7 was unveiled during the opening keynote of Apple's WWDC on June 10, 2013.
Billed as the "biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone", the most notable change is a complete overhaul of the user interface. In a promotional video shown during the keynote, Ive described the update as "bringing order to complexity", highlighting features such as refined typography, new icons, translucency, layering, physics, and gyroscope-driven parallaxing as some of the major changes to the design. GTA V

Grand Theft Auto V was designed to improve upon every gameplay element found in previous games in the series.
The world of GTA V is bigger than the worlds of Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV combined. Areas in the game world include beach fronts, mountains, wilderness, an "Alamos" Sea area "based on the Salton sea in California", a military base, and the suburbs. The ocean floor is fully detailed and can be explored.
GTA V's single-player story is told through three player-controlled protagonists: Michael, Trevor, and Franklin, criminals whose stories interconnect as they complete missions together. During story missions, the player can switch between the protagonists as they work together to accomplish an objective; in one such mission, Michael rappels down the side of a building, Franklin provides covering fire with a sniper rifle, and Trevor controls the getaway helicopter. A gameplay video showed that
players have the ability to execute heists in one of two ways; players can choose to take a "loud" approach to the mission (such as going in with guns) or a more tactical approach (such as using sleeping gas).
Outside missions, the player can swap between the protagonists and explore the game's open world, which includes a fully-fledged ecosystem. The camera zooms out to a "Google Earth-style" perspective when switching characters and then drops into wherever the chosen character is. Even when the player is not controlling them, each character will still go about their own business across Los Santos. As any of the protagonists, the player can engage in activities such as yoga, triathlons, jet skiing, basejumping, tennis, golf, scuba diving, or go to the gym. Hunting wildlife and bounty hunting from Red Dead Redemption will be featured. Each character will have unique hobbies, which can be completed with the protagonists' friends, but the dating system from GTA IV does not return. Characters can "flick off" people, "something Rockstar recommends you do in varied
circumstances to see different reactions from people". Depending on the area, people react differently. The mobile phone introduced in GTA IV returns, but many of its features have been altered. The mobile phone is mainly used for activities and can also be used to access the in-game internet. There will be a "vibrant and fun" economy system, initially it was thought players would be unable to buy in-game property as in Vice City and Vice City Stories, but in the first showing to the press this was revealed to be inaccurate. Shooting has evolved "a long way" in terms of feel and mechanics and the melee combat is improved over that of previous GTA titles.

Jim Higgins MEP is encouraging web entrepreneurs, budding tech enthusiasts and online SMEs to investigate a new €130 million EU fund aimed at supporting the development of online services.
Irish Craft Beer - Celebrating Growth and Expansion in a Time of Recession
The Irish Craft Beer and Cider Festival returns to RDS, Dublin from September 58. A celebration of Irish craft brewing, cider making and whiskey distilling coupled with live music and Irish artisan food stalls. The festival will fall in line with Irish Craft Beer Week which will run from August 30 onwards throughout independent pubs and off-licences nationwide. The Irish craft beer industry is thriving in a time of national recession, with over half of the existing 37 breweries/cider makers having been set up since 2009. Within the craft beer sector alone, industry sales rose by 42.5% last year and are expected to increase by at least a further 35% this year.
"We need to encourage web entrepreneurs and emerging talent to use their skills to help Europe become the world leader in technological development in this area. Ireland, in particular, has a reputation as a technology hub. So, I am glad that the European Commission has brought forward a substantial €130 million EU fund to support web technologies development," said Mr Higgins.
Funding will typically be to a value in the range of €50,000 - €150,000 per successful applicant, with the support of an overall coordinating organisation. The deadline for funding applications is December 10, 2013.

Parents worried about their children while off in college will have one less thing to think about thanks to Clever Cuisine.ie. Started last year, it offers students the chance to have a healthy diet while studying. The venture is run through M&K Meats (The Market Butcher) which for only €10 a week will deliver fresh meat and vegetables, for collection from the student centres in the participating colleges. The student then goes online to view the easy to cook recipes for their food pack.
The meat and vegetables provided are for four meals a week and although it is not quite the full week still offers the choice of a take away on the Friday or to go back home for a cooked meal from Mum, and perhaps some tips for the following week’s dinners.
Accenture brings 140 jobs to Dublin
Global consulting group Accenture has announced the creation of 140 new jobs in Ireland. It currently employs around 1,400 people in Ireland. It has announced plans to add a further 140 staff to that number according to RTE News. The company is looking for graduates and specialists with experience in Java, business systems, cloud computing and digital technologies.

The service which began as a project between University College Dublin and the butchers company M&K Meats has extended its service for the upcoming college year. Students of NUI Maynooth and Trinity College can now avail of this service, after the success it had last year. The venture was set up after a survey done by UCD in 2011 which showed that 81% of the 500 students surveyed had skipped meals to pay for unavoidable academic costs. Burdocks Celebrate Centenary
1913 was an historic year in the annals of Dublin history, Larkin was leading the lockout, revolutionary thoughts were stirring amongst many and Dublin’s favorite take away shop opened its doors to serve its now famous brand of fish and chips!
On the 28th of August Burdock’s celebrated in style with a gala day in their flagship Christchurch Store. Vikings from the iconic Viking Splash tour were on hand to break down the door and ‘comedic genius’ Brendan Grace entertained the assembled crowds. Sarah Morrissey, former Miss Ireland was in attendance to bring some glamour to the event and served the eager customers. Traditional Irish musicians The Currach played traditional music and there were face painters and entertainers for the kids.
Fish and chips were half price for the day and all the proceeds were split between charities, The National Children’s Hospital, The Iveagh Trust, The Capuchin Day Centre and The St Vincent De Paul keeping up Burdock’s long standing tradition of doing charitable work!

BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP By S.J. Watson
Unbeknownst to me, I seem to have beat Hollywood to it for once.
Several times previously I seem to have reached the party a little late when it comes to big screen adaptations of novels. Oftentimes I’ll pick up a second hand book which would have been issued to coincide with its film release and so I’d be a year or two too late.
In this case however, I have finished Before I Go To Sleep in good time. The movie version won’t be out until next year but will apparently feature Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth. I didn’t realise this until after I’d finished it though. This was another of my mother’s recommendations and one of her better ones at that. As soon as I started reading one lunchtime, I was immediately hooked. The novel is a psychological thriller about a woman suffering from anterograde amnesia. She wakes every day with no knowledge of who she is and the novel follows her as she tries to
reconstruct her memories from a journal she has been keeping. She learns that she has been seeing a doctor who is helping her to recover her memory, that her name is Christine Lucas, that she is 47 years old and married and has a son. As her journal grows it casts doubts on the truth behind this knowledge and sets her on a terrifying journey of discovery.
In an interview with The Guardian, Watson spoke about his inspiration for the book: “I was reading about a man called Henry Molaison who suffered severe amnesia following an operation he underwent when he was 27. Over the years carbohydrates have received a lot of bad publicity when it comes to weight loss and diets.
Many slimming organisations would suggest that we cut down on our intake of carbs in our diet and in some cases, cut them out completely. It is important to understand why carbohydrates are essential when it comes to our health; not only do they provide bulk to the diet making us feel fuller for longer periods but they are also the main source of energy supply to the body which enables the body to perform all of its daily functions.
As a source of energy, carbohydrates are a component of foods such as breads, grains, cereals, fruits and vegetables that are broken down by the body into simple sugars called glucose and it is this glucose that is stored by the body in the muscles as glycogen and used as energy. Therefore, carbs are essential in the diet as they provide our bodies with a constant flow of fuel needed to sustain and maintain an active lifestyle. There are two different types of carbs, simple and complex carbs and these foods are classified based on the speed at which their sugars
are broken down and absorbed into the blood stream. Simple carbs can be absorbed a lot faster in the body because they are made up of only one or two molecules of sugars and are often used in sweets, cakes and biscuits. Over consumption of these food types leads to a peak in sugar levels which means that when your sugar levels drop you tend to crave more sugar.
There are many who believe that eating a lowcarb diet is a good way to achieve weight loss results. While this may be true at the start of the diet, it is unrealistic to maintain such a diet and when a person returns to old eating habits they quickly put the weight back on.
It is important to remember that to lose weight you must burn more calories than what you consume through food or drink. Aphids are soft, pear-shaped bodied insects that suck the life out of your plants.
Some aphids have wings. Most aphids are green but they also come in red, yellow, grey and black. Aphids are about 1/8 inch long, have 6 legs. In the autumn, the female aphids mate with a male to produce eggs that winter over. Aphids secrete a sticky honeydew substance from their rear.
Ants will carry the aphids around and harvest the honeydew from the aphids. In the autumn ants will carry aphid eggs into their nest and take care of the eggs until spring. In the spring the ants will return the aphid eggs to the plants.
If you have an ant invasion, look for aphids as well. To eliminate aphids there are several methods:

Tallaght Open
On Sunday September 1 at Tallaght Community School, Tallaght Martial Arts (TMA) are to host the Tallaght Open, a martial arts tournament containing Forms, Karate Kata, Weapons, Light Contact Fighting and Point Fighting.
Now in its 9th year, TMA have seen this tournament grow from strength to strength, starting in 2004 as a small local club tournament to its present status as one of the largest and most competitive tournaments on the Irish kickboxing circuit. It is here that the top athletes in the country come to test their skills and development before travelling on to the World Championships in Turkey or the Sport Accord Combat Games in Russia.
This tournament replicates the club’s ethos of inclusion and participation for all levels, with several disciplines available to take part in and participants from the age of 5 years to over 50 years of age taking part on the day. The club prides itself on having produced several World and European champions but feels this is only part of what the club is all about. The personal development of students is foremost in the minds of the instructors as they bring them through their individual martial arts journey, and are proud to see young students walk out the door stronger and with a greater sense of self-esteem. Terenure U20’s will kick off their season on Saturday week 24 August with a game against Ballinasloe RFC First XV. Kick Off at 6pm as part of the town’s Gathering 2013. It is the final game of an all-day Rugby Festival and a huge crowd is expected to watch the Noel Mannion coached home side take on our Under 20’s. It promises to be a great day.

The Gaelic4Mothers & Others initiative is an innovative way to introduce mothers and other women to playing Ladies Gaelic Football. Mothers often drop their kids to training and call back to collect them, but the Ladies Gaelic Football Association wants to change that. The Gaelic4Mothers & Others initiative sees women playing Ladies Gaelic Football in a fun, non-competitive and social environment. Gaelic4Mothers & Others provides an opportunity for women to get their recommended weekly exercise in a fun way while meeting other mothers in the area. Alongside the G4F+O program there will be a nursery catering for 4-8 year olds boys and girls. This will provide an opportunity for all the family to engage with GAA as fathers will be welcome to support their partners and get involved with the nursery also.

Croi Ro Naofa Ladies Team, Winners Of Junior A Championship 2013
Local Ladies Football Success
It was a good night for local ladies football teams in Swords on Friday August 20 with both St Judes and Croi Ro Naofa crossing the Liffey and returning with the scalp of north side teams and Dublin Championship titles. First up was St Judes who staged a remarkable comeback to beat O’Tooles by the slenderest of margins to win the Junior B title. This was no more than the girls from Tymon Park deserved as they have impressed all year and have come close on previous occasions.
Then the Killinarden girls dispatched the challenge of Man O War from North County Dublin to take home the Junior A title by 6 points on a scoreline of 2-13 to 0-13. This coupled with Thomas Davis Intermediate success when they beat Kilmacud Crokes a few weeks ago means ¾ of the county titles reside in South Dublin, the future of Ladies football is bright in the area! Huge congratulations to Derek Foley from Templeogue, who has been named Dublin's Finest Supporter with thanks to Vodafone! Derek is the Chairman of Robert Emmets GAA club in Perrystown. As well as the prestigious title Derek won a weekend for two in Ireland, his name emblazoned on a seat in Parnell Park, as well as €2,000 for his club.
People like Derek who have shown massive support to all levels of the GAA in Dublin are the reason for the success of the Senior Teams over the years and it is great to see the real fans been recognised.

Terenure FC has grown very fast over the last few years. The club have an inclusive ethos and encourage players of all skill levels. The Under 12 team are going into their second season with the club and it hasn't been easy but it has certainly been fun. Most of the team were new to organised football but they have made steady progress. The philosophy is that all players get equal opportunity so on match day everyone gets to play.

Macdara Ferris and Karl Reilly are the authors of Tallaght Time, a new book chronicling The Hoops first four seasons in Tallaght. InRovers met up with the lads to find out more about this wonderful book.
What was the motivation behind writing Tallaght Time?
Karl: The first four years in Tallaght
were just so extraordinary, especially the European campaign, that’s where the idea for the book began. In October last year I thought about writing a book to record that time in the clubs history so I got in touch with Macdara. We met up and decided to centre it around the key games through interviews with the fans, managers and players. It took us about six months to write.
Macdara: It was a labour of love
really; a lot of the work involved was very enjoyable. Through both Karl and my own involvement with the club through the programme and website we would have been there when most of the stories happened. We were going to publish it ourselves but a number of publishers
showed an interest in it and we were delighted when Liffey Press decided to go with it. It’s not just something only Rovers fans would be interested in though, it appeals to football fans because it’s the story of a club that were broke and facing extinction in 2005 who were saved by their fans, moved to a new stadium, then didn’t just float along when they got there but actually competed, won trophies, got into Europe and took on some of the biggest clubs. It’s great to be able to tell that story.
Karl: I was only two when Rovers
left Milltown so I’m a bit too young to remember that! I’m a new fan; I’ve only been a supporter since the move to Tallaght. I also work on the website and do stats for the programme. It’s the history of the club that sparked my interest really.
What has been your own personal highlight from the timeframe the book covers?

Do you think because quite a lot of our current national squad played in the League Of Ireland it’s evidence of an improvement in the overall quality of the league?
Football wise Joe N'Do, when I was at Sligo Joe was very good to me. I used to play in midfield with him, which was a pleasure for me. An amazing player, a lovely man, and a huge influence on me. The standard is definitely improv- Any young player should look up ing all the time, most of the teams to him. Whatever Joe’s doing just like to get the ball down and knock do that!
Best player you’ve ever played against?
Dennis Bergkamp or Thierry Henry, probably say Bergkamp. I played against him for Sunderland last day of the season (2004) when Arsenal went unbeaten. I didn’t get anywhere near him, he just kept knocking it past me! It’s a nice one to look back at on the video alright, to see myself running after him!
Finally if there was anything you could change
about the League of Ireland what would it be?
The publicity for the league could be better, I don’t think it gets enough publicity to promote it to the outside world. I think the FAI could do more for the league as well. Obviously money is an issue with them at the moment. A few years ago the money for winning the league was quite good, it could really benefit a club whereas now the money for winning the league could barely cover a few players wages for the year.
