Greetings Readers from all of us at InTallaght. We hope you’re all having a great summer so far, whether you’ve finished exams, had a memorable holiday or just counting down the days until you get away! The Euro’s gave so many of us a great lift last month. The wonderful performances of our players and fans have been an absolute credit, it was so nice to see and hear positive things about our country, and people, in our own media for a change. Long may it continue! Last month we met up with Irish WWE wrestler Sheamus ahead of his acting debut in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie during a visit home for the Dubliner. He is an Irish success story that probably doesn’t get enough recognition here and we were delighted to get to chat to him.

The secondary interview is with local man Billy Byrne who is a talent scout for English Premier League Champions Leicester City (still feels mad writing that!) It was really interesting to hear him describe the attributes a young player needs to make it to the very top in professional football and talk about what for many football fans would be a dream job. As always we have our eight page Square Section bringing you all the latest news and upcoming events in The Square Towncentre Tallaght as well as our car, movie and music reviews. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any local news you want us to share as we love to hear from you guys. Until the next time!

TALLAFEST 2016 LAUNCHES WITH A BIG SPLASH IN TALLAGHT VILLAGE BY PADRAIG CONLON Tallaght Community Council (TCC) launched Tallafest 2016 (#tallafest2016) to a bustling crowd of over 120 attendees from the business and wider community last Thursday, 9th of June in The Station restaurant in Molloys, Tallaght village. The buzzing launch event was sponsored by Molloys, in their award winning restaurant where there was barely standing room. The tea time event was attended by the Mayor, the current Tallaght Person of The Year, local businesses, media partners – The Echo and InTallaght, our festival venues – St Maelruains & The Priory, The Square, the ITT, SDCC, TDs and councillors – and a large number of Tallaght clubs, teams and schools.

GOVERNMENT TASKFORCE ON THE WAY TO TACKLE PROBLEMS IN NORTH INNER CITY DUBLIN BY PADRAIG CONLON Councillors from the area met the Taoiseach yesterday to discuss the terms of reference of the taskforce. A brainstorming session will be held next Wednesday with community representatives to set out short and long term strategies for the area. Independent Councillor Niall Ring says the meeting was very productive: “The Taoiseach just asked what we felt were the issues,

This is the fourth year of the village festival, which seeks to energise the village and to celebrate the heritage, arts, culture and creativity for families. It is organised by a team of volunteers and the program includes a wide range of free activities – from guided history walks, art exhibitions, to imaginative child’s play and an afternoon of live entertainment on the main stage. The family festival takes place in a pedestrianised zone in Tallaght’s Main Street on Saturday 3rd of September from 12 noon to 5pm. The festival program includes the firm favourites of the balloon release, the giant sandbox, the Dublin Fire Brigade, 98 FM – as well as Tallaght’s Choral Society, Tallaght ICA, Xquisite Dance School, Corus Choir and a whole host of sporting clubs who will be allowing you try out new sports and also hosting sporting displays. what we felt were the possible solutions and what we wanted the government and in particular his department to do for Dublin’s North Inner City in terms of short, long, and medium-term strategy.” Public Expenditure Minister Pascal Donohue said development in the nearby Docklands and related economic activity will benefit the north inner city. Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald said it could take “a generation” to help communities and resolve some of the problems.

Young children with disabilities in Tallaght and surrounding communities will enjoy improved access to preschool services under a series of initiatives launched by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs and local TD, Katherine Zappone. Minister Zappone hosted the national launch and a new information website at the Ashland Nursery in Tallaght and encouraged local childcare providers and parents to act now to ensure enrolments would start in September. Both providers and parents of children with disabilities are being advised by the Dublin South West TD to go to www.preschoolaccess.ie to get more information on the new ‘Access Inclusion Model: AIM’. Speaking at the launch Minister Zappone said: “Parents and pre-school providers who wish to avail of AIM should make their applications now so that they can plan for enrolments in September.

FROM CANCER ON (pictured Kenny was the nicest, most genuine person anyone could JUNE 22ND 2012 ever wish to meet, he would do @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

anything for anyone and always put others first, a true friend. I am currently training for the this year’s Dublin Marathon to fulfil a promise to him. One day while Kenny was recovering from his treatment we went for a walk with his dog. He suggested that we should start running and do a marathon together when he got better. I loved the idea, but unfortunately Kenny never got better. Last year, to fulfil the promise, I was due to run the New York Marathon when I got the terrible news I had testicular cancer. I obviously had to pull out of the race and begin getting treatment. I was lucky that the illness was caught early meaning I was able to have surgery. I am now on the mend thankfully and feeling great. The 10K last month in the Phoenix Park was the race I’ve been training for since my recovery and it felt great to get

out there, but it was definitely a lot harder than I thought it would be! I’m back now, strong as ever and twice as determined. I plan to run the Dublin Marathon in October and it’s without doubt the toughest challenge I’ve even taken on in my life! But the reason I’m doing it makes every inch of the 26.2 miles worthwhile. I will be running in aid of St. Clare’s Ward in Beaumont Hospital, where Kenny spent his final days. The staff were so good to us at the time, this is to say thank you to all of them for the amazing way they looked after Kenny during his time there. I just hope that we can raise a lot of money to try and make things more comfortable for people who are sick. It’s a gift from Kenny. I know he’d do the same for me.”

SHAMELESSLY SHEAMUS We at InTallaght caught up with WWE superstar Sheamus last month as he was in town for the premiere of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie. We spoke about his newest career in acting and life on the road with the WWE.

BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

Sheamus, whose real name is Stephen Farrelly, is a household name across America so it was no surprise to see him get such a warm welcome when he arrived back to his native City of Dublin last month for the movie’s official premiere here at The Savoy in the City Centre. Many of you will know Stephen Farrelly by just his WWE stage name Sheamus O’Shaunessy or the Celtic Warrior. Prior to joining WWE, Farrelly wrestled on the European circuit and was a twotime International Heavyweight Champion during his tenure in Irish Whip Wrestling (IWW). Originally from Cabra he became part of the WWE main roster in 2009 under the name Sheamus. From here he went on to be a four-time world champion in WWE, having held

Sheamus with InTallaght journalist Rachel Lynch in The Westbury

the WWE World Heavyweight Championship three times and the World Heavyweight Championship once. Not to mention the fact he is also a twotime United States Champion. I think it’s fair to say he’s put his stamp firmly on the WWE world but what about acting? Some would say every day he

is acting as he plays a character when he enters the ring but what about the big screen? You may be surprised to know that this year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles isn’t Sheamus’s first time on the big screen. He has also had a small role in the 2006 Irish film 3 Crosses, and played Two Ton in the 2008 movie The

// 15

SHEAMUS Escapist. He also appeared as a Celtic Warrior Zombie in the opening sequence of the 2009 film Assault of Darkness, but there is no denying his role as Rocksteady will have been his biggest to date. We chatted with him about his role in The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows as Rocksteady and how he was chosen for the role. “This all came about through WWE, a year ago. I was out with an injury and we have a WWE film studio sitting in LA so I guess the whole process with Paramount and Michael Bay came from there. They were looking for a big muscular dude for Rocksteady, they naturally went to WWE, UFC and a lot of different outlets. “I got the call and I was off, they said ‘Do you want to do an audition for a movie?’, and I was like ‘What is it’, and they said ‘It’s for Rocksteady’ and I was like ‘Absolutely!’” “I did it and they had two or three different casting calls and I did them through my phone actually and then I found out I got the role, so it was mad”. One of the more interesting aspects to the role for me was that Sheamus was able to keep his Irish accent. I’m sure many would have assumed taking on such an iconic role in such a huge franchise he would have had to adapt to fit the surroundings but he told us that simply wasn’t the case with the casting team. “They didn’t tell me to change anything, they just said to enjoy yourself and the role and that’s what me and Gary did, we just went out there. The original movies were in the 90’s so this was the first time we got to bring these guys to life so it was a big responsibility and there was a lot of pressure on. Everyone has been very positive about it, and this is the first time anyone has said anything about my Dublin accent since I’ve come here. Nobody else has said anything about it”.

16 // #intallaght / TWEET US

WHEN I TALK TO MY DAD OR SOMEONE BACK HOME FOR LIKE 20 MINUTES AFTERWARDS [MY ACCENT] ALL COMES BACK OR IT GETS STRONGER

It’s evident from the trailer alone that Rocksteady was going to have an important role and how great for all of us at home to hear such a strong Dublin accent throughout. He did however mention how he worried how he sounded to the people at home who heard him. “I was worried we Americanised too many words. It’s so easy to happen because I’ve been living there for nine years. “Sometimes I find my accent going a bit, when I first got over there my head was wrecked because nobody could understand what I was saying so I had to slow down my accent

IT’S GOOD TO INSPIRE KIDS, I DO A LOT OF WORK FOR ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGNS

Sheamus in character as Rocksteady with co-star Gary Anthony Williams as Bebop

a lot. When I talk to my dad or someone back home for like 20 minutes afterwards it all comes back or it gets stronger. I try to lose as little of my Irishness as possible”. Being based abroad for the last nine years Sheamus says he really doesn’t get to get back to Ireland as much as he would like. “I am based in Tampa, I don’t get home often. I got home this time last year with an injury, but I have been back on the road since last April. I’ve probably just been home for three of four days”. With former WWE stars like Dwayne Johnson taking over the

movie world in Hollywood it’s only a matter of time before one of our own becomes a dominant figure. Although acting is something Sheamus loves he says he still enjoys his job as a wrestler with the WWE and one part that he enjoys most is traveling all over the world while meeting all the fans. Just a few months ago he took in a tour of many football stadiums throughout Europe. A football fan himself he said it was one of the greatest trips he has been on to date, with an extra special mention of a club close to his heart Celtic FC.

It was a personal request of his to visit the champions of Scotland alongside his colleague Rusev the Maestro: “The Celtic trip I requested, we didn’t actually get to Celtic Park but we got to the training facility. It was a cool moment playing football with the kids and it was great craic. I’m a big Liverpool fan as well but obviously there is a huge connection there being Irish. You don’t see any other Scottish football tops floating about except for Celtic and maybe a few Hibs. It was great craic, I put the request in for that. So I got my schedule and it was one of the funniest trips I’ve been on to be honest we did a lot of cool things.” As a lover of all things football Sheamus also got to take in some other decent sights along the way: “First thing we saw was the San Siro and that was amazing, I’m still waiting on my shirt to fit, then I went to the Etihad Stadium, I’m a Liverpool fan but I went there anyway. People were on Twitter asking am I a Liverpool fan or a City fan but it wasn’t about that. They gave me a shirt with five on it which is the amount of European cups Liverpool have won and we got to just check the place out”. Although traveling the world can at times be tough for anyone who then goes on to perform in a big show it’s something Sheamus says he would never change as meeting the fans and young children is a great experience. “That part of the job is important. Being a kid, it’s a part of your life where you have so much opportunity ahead of you and

July 2016 //

// 17

SHEAMUS you don’t know where your life is going to go. It’s good to inspire kids, I do a lot of work for antibullying campaigns and you would want to see some of the kids I meet. They are petrified of their own shadow, afraid of being in public places and then there are the Make a Wish kids too”. With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows already receiving rave reviews (see our own review on page 47) both this side of the world and also in America, I am in no doubt that this is only the beginning of Stephen Farrelly’s acting career on the big screen. Judging by his experience in this blockbuster he too will be hoping to continue with this new career path. “I’d love to do more, I had great craic doing it with Paramount and it was great experience. I’ve achieved a lot in the WWE world but the movie world is different”. Sitting down and speaking with Stephen you sort of forget he is this massive star abroad, he’s well known here but in America he is one of the biggest products of the WWE. Is that down to the fact he is Irish? Maybe so, but one thing is certain the fame and fortune certainly hasn’t gone to his head. He’s just like any other typical lad from Dublin, no airs or graces with him. When I asked him about his life these days he explains he just enjoys it all and loves the job he has. “Honestly for me it’s just about having the craic. I don’t go mad, I’m not in it for the money, I’m in it for the fun, everything I do is for the fun”. His welcome on the red carpet was something The Savoy haven’t seen in a long time. Many fans turned up in the sun to catch a glimpse of their favourite WWE star to try to get a picture. Sheamus seemed delighted to be home speaking to many of his fans as he went in to

18 // #intallaght / TWEET US

watch the movie alongside many members of his family who he says are “very proud of him”. While on the red carpet he was asked about rumours surrounding Conor McGregor and the WWE. He told The Irish Independent that “I think the great thing about the WWE is that its very entertaining, I think he is made for that type of situation. It’s kind of hard not to get Conor McGregor to talk so I think he would do great”. They then asked would he fight him if he did make the change over to WWE and his response? “sure it’s entertainment, it’s WWE, I’d do anything, I’d fight anybody, anyplace, anywhere”. 2016 is certainly going to prove to be an important year for Stephen. I didn’t know what to expect when I saw the cast involved in The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and to be brutally honest I wasn’t so sure if it would interest me. I take that all back now having seen it. It’s the type of film the entire family will enjoy. It includes a big name cast with the likes of Megan Fox

I’VE ACHIEVED A LOT IN THE WWE WORLD BUT THE MOVIE WORLD IS DIFFERENT and Laura Linney but Stephen certainly didn’t look or sound out of place and for somebody starting out in these big time roles, what a lead to take on. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is out in cinemas throughout the country now.

BILLY BYRNE

TALLAGHT TALENT SPOTTER Billy Byrne from Jobstown featured in our Humans Of Tallaght series last month. An international scout for English Premier League champions Leicester City he is responsible for finding young Irish players for the club. BY PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

It’s a role he has held for nine years and one he absolutely loves. Any young footballers with ambitions to make a career in the game will be interested in hearing him explain what exactly the top English clubs look for when identifying potential stars of the future. It’s the week after Leicester City have been crowned Champions of England and I’m discussing one of the greatest shocks in the history of sport with a local man connected with this amazing story. The first question I have to ask Billy: Is Claudio Ranieri as nice in reality as he appears when talking to the media? “Oh he is, without a shadow of a doubt, he’s so mellow, so laid back, so relaxed,” he says. “He is just a genuinely lovely guy. When you see how relaxed the players are you can see the positive effect he has on them. I was over there last week and all the players were so mellow, you wouldn’t think they were going for the league title.” He goes on to explain how the whole ethos of the club is one of respect with an emphasis on nurturing a family atmosphere which comes from their Thai

20 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Dublin born CEO Susan Whelan on the day Ranieri was appointed

CLAUDIO RANIERI IS JUST A GENUINELY LOVELY GUY. WHEN YOU SEE HOW RELAXED THE PLAYERS ARE YOU CAN SEE THE POSITIVE EFFECT HE HAS ON THEM owners right down to the youngest members of the playing staff. “The owners are so respectful,” says Billy. “The chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha is a billionaire and he will bow to everyone. That’s respect. I love working for the club. I had an offer from Everton but I’d no interest in leaving Leicester because the atmosphere is a different class. I bring players over all the time.” Billy isn’t the only Irish person working behind the scenes at the club. He’s not even the only Dub as the club’s CEO is Susan Whelan from Howth. “Susan is the CEO of all the chairman’s

businesses and she’s a lovely woman,” says Billy. “Anyone who works for the club would have to be of that ethos. She’s done an excellent job since being appointed, she is a brilliant business woman.” Billy has always had a big interest in football. Previously he managed Jobstown Celtic, Greenpark and Crumlin United. When his son Shane got older he became involved in schoolboy football. Now aged 23 Shane is a professional footballer currently playing with Nuneaton who has been capped at underaged level for Ireland. He spent five years with Leicester City himself before a debilitating bout of glandular fever stalled his career for a few years. “If Shane gets back to full fitness he can definitely play at the highest level, absolutely. It’s all about getting a chance to show what you can do.” I am interested in finding out how exactly Billy goes about his business assessing potential players. So I pitch him with a hypothetical scenario. When he goes to look at say a 15 year old midfielder what does he look for? “There is established criteria you’ll look at,” says Billy. “First of all what is his awareness like. As a midfielder you’ve got to be aware of what you’re doing.

“What is his touch like, his distribution? They’re the three top things I’d look for in a midfielder. His pace, his recovery. A midfielder has to be box to box so if you make a run forward what’s he like coming back? Does he stroll back, does he get back into position straight away? When he has the ball does he make that extra bit of space for himself that all good midfielders make? “Does he play the ball mostly forwards or backwards? Is he looking up to go forward all the time or is he looking to go sideways and backwards? English teams have loads of players that go sideways and backwards, they want players who go forwards. That’s all the things I would look for. But also I’ll want to know what’s he like off the field? Is he a leader? Does he get involved when he shouldn’t be getting involved?” Billy says he will go and watch a potential player multiple times. “We need to do three reports,” he says. “I’ll go and see him play against a good team, say a top team in his league, see how he performs in that. Then I’ll go see him play against a really bad team to see how his attitude is, has he the same drive as he would have against a good side? Does he take the foot off the pedal? How’s

July 2016 //

// 21

BILLY BYRNE

THERE HAS TO BE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION... DON’T BE A SHEEP, BE A LEADER his attitude towards other players. Then I’ll watch him against a mid table side as well. Once I log a report on a player into the system my boss will see that report and we will be tracking that player from then on.” If the club are interested Billy will approach the players parents and will discuss getting them over to Leicester City. “The first time you get them over it’s an introduction but they have to do well,” he explains. “The second time you get them over it’s a trial, for a week. The third time we bring them over we bring the parents as well. If we have a deal on the table you can put all the work in and still lose the player which can be very frustrating.” Billy says he doesn’t believe giving a 15 year old a big contract is necessarily in the players best interest. “If you give a kid too much too early they won’t work right,” he tells me. “With Ranieri it’s all about the work ethic so I try and not give kids pro deals. I’m caught in two ways. We’ve got to give the kids some stability when they go away, especially the Irish lads who are moving country, they need it in case things don’t work out. My boss’s attitude is if you give them too much too early they’ll stop working, they’ll think they made it. I try and talk to their agents, every 15 year old now has an agent. My advice is to take a 2 Year YTS and work their socks off. Give them the incentive to work.” Billy takes great pride in his work and isn’t out to make a quick buck off anyone. “I don’t bullshit anybody, I tell people like it is, I don’t try and con anybody, if the player is not a right fit for

22 // #intallaght / TWEET US

Leicester city I’ll say it to them” he says. “I’ve helped kids who didn’t get a contract off Leicester, I’ve rang up clubs for lads before. I’ll try and help any way I can even if I’m not getting anything out of it, I like to see kids getting a chance to play football at a good level and fulfil their dreams. I could’ve been an agent but I’m just not interested. I love football. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I get a buzz off it. It’s my distraction from life and I really enjoy what I do.” If fortunate enough to be signed by the club, Billy says what young players will find at Leicester City is a real family atmosphere, a home away from home. “All the players stay in digs in the same place,” he says. “You see that team spirit the first team have? That’s been nurtured by having the whole under 18s team staying together. They all go home at the weekends apart from the foreign lads. They have house parents, curfews and the internet’s knocked off at a certain time. They get well fed with the digs ensuring they get the right food into them, it’s very family orientated. Before we couldn’t compete with Chelsea for young players, now we can.” Having been doing this job for a decade, I ask Billy what does he think of the standard of schoolboy football in Ireland?

“It’s excellent,” he says. “The likes of Kevin’s Boys, St Josephs Boys, they’ve done wonders so they have. All their coaches are UEFA B/A level. Joeys have seven players in the Kennedy Cup team. Kevin’s Boys have two players, Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady, playing in the Ireland team. They have five ex players on the under 18 national side. Crumlin United and Cherry Orchard as well have top academies. They are phenomenal clubs run by volunteers who are great people.” Before we finish up I ask him what advice he has for young lads who want to make a career in the game? “There has to be hard work and dedication,” he tells me. “Every day you’re going to have a choice in life. Whether you’re playing football, working in a shop, or in an office, you’ll have choices to make everyday. You’ve got to make the right choice for you. Don’t be a sheep, be a leader. Any decision you make that’s going to benefit your life you’ve got to make it for you. Don’t be conned into doing anything. You ask yourself “if I go down this road what will my parents think?” If you think for a second it’d make them disappointed then don’t go down that road. Do the safe thing and nine out of ten times you’ll be right. You have to believe in yourself.”

She travelled alongside her husband Alan, both told us they had the time of their life and with Ireland getting such a great result we are sure you brought the boys in green all the luck they needed on the day.

THE WORKS Last month The Square Towncentre welcomed The Works to Level 3. The store which is famous for its arts and craft supplies along with a fantastic selection of books and stationery, not to mention toys and games, has now found a home at our Centre, much to the delight of many of our customers. There is so much on offer and at such great prices too. Whatever you are looking for

safety of our customers and staff is a priority while crossing at this high traffic area. We have also added further investment into extending our pedestrian footpath on route to the Post Office, not only will this give additional pedestrian walkway but we will be enhancing the area with external seating and planting. On our West we have also invested in a Pedestrian crossing opposite the Topaz garage to offer safe passage to customers entering and leaving the Centre from this point.

and for any age they have you covered. The arts and crafts section is really impressive, from paints to books on knitting and all kinds of activities. Then there is their fantastic range of games. The Works Group CEO Kevin Keaney who was here on the morning for the official opening, told us how happy he was to be here: “We are very excited and we want the word of mouth to spread. We have heard a lot of brilliant things about Tallaght”.

OUR BLOOMING BASKETS The sun is out and it’s summer time. This means one thing, our hanging baskets are back and I’m sure you will all agree they look absolutely beautiful. Adding a big splash of colour on all three levels of the Centre they certainly do add the ‘Wow’ factor to our entrances.

RELAX AND TAKE THE WEIGHT OFF YOUR FEET! Have you seen our new column benches located on Level 1? They are located just outside the Dealz store and add another new modern look to the Centre. This is an area of the Centre where many of our customers enjoy taking the weight off their feet while shopping and we have to say we really do think they look great!

ALI’S CRAFTS NEW INTERNET SURFBOX PRINTSCAN-COPY KIOSK This month we introduced SurfBox a new internet print-scan-copy kiosk available for use by all customers which is located near the toilet facilities on Level 3. The service provides an internet access solution through the provision of “pay as you go” including printing and scanning facilities. This service has only been up and running a matter of weeks and already it is proving to be an excellent success.

Ali’s Crafts is a local company which specialises in bespoke personalised frames for every occasion and started up just a few months ago. Since then they have gone on to enjoy massive success. Last month they won “Best Display” at the Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town event at Tallaght Stadium and the following week were awarded their trophy and gift card from The Square Towncentre. We spoke to Ali about how the business came about; “We came up with the idea but I didn’t really have any confidence really on how to develop it whereas Stephen sort of pushed it. I started off doing frames for friends and family. We then went on and set up the company on the 4th of April of this year and we are doing very well so far. We have had about 60 or 70 orders since April, so it’s going from strength to strength”. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the company, Stephen explains exactly what their product is all about and how they can cater for just about anyone;

EURO 2016 FACEBOOK GIVEAWAYS We have had a busy couple of weeks here at The Square with giveaways. First up we had some jam packed Ireland supporters hampers up for grabs before Ireland kicked off their Euro campaign. Also yet another one of our Facebook friends walked away with a brand new Ireland jersey. Up next we had Father’s Day, a €100 Square Gift Card was one of our bigger giveaways along with a Nando’s platter which was as ever very popular among our friends on Facebook. We then had some great midweek giveaways which included a Trunki Trixie children’s suitcase for those of you heading off on your holidays. As with every month we had a much sought after River Island purse. Finally we had our cinema giveaway which also included a themed goodie bag to celebrate the release of Independence Day: Resurgence. Don’t worry if this month you weren’t a winner we have plenty more prizes up for grabs, simply check out our Facebook page today!

The past few weeks have had many highs mixed with one or two lows as Ireland kicked off their Euro campaign in Paris against Sweden. We showed all the Ireland fixtures on the big screen on the Centre Mall and have been glued to the games. With an opening goal from Wes Hoolahan almost immediately after the second half kick off Ireland were flying. Dominating the game in possession this was looking to be the ultimate dream start for the boys in green. Then the killer blow, an own goal in the 71st minute from Ciaran Clark saw the Swedes level. Next up the Belgians who really had to impress in their second game having suffered a defeat to Italy in their first game. This was to be Ireland’s toughest challenge. The Belgians did all the damage in the second half. Romelu Lukaku scored twice with one from Axel Witsel. It wasn’t to be Ireland’s day.

EUROS FACEBOOK COMPETITION WINNER - TRIP OF A LIFETIME Our biggest ever prize giveaway through our social media channels was our Euros trip to Paris to see Ireland take on Sweden. The game saw Ireland score two minutes into the second half and our lucky winners Joanne McCarthy Kelly

Last game of the group – Italy. The pressure was off the Italians as they had already topped the group and secured a place in the last 16 but what about Ireland? Well we needed a win! The 85th minute saw one of the greatest moments in Irish sporting history. A Robbie Brady header saw Ireland take a place in the last 16. A one nil victory over the Italians, who would have thought it?!

Up next the French, after Theirry Henry’s handball back in 2009 revenge was on the cards for the Irish. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be but the Irish team returned with their heads held high. COYBIG!

and her husband Alan were there to take it all in. We caught up with the pair, who left Dublin on the morning of the game and travelled to Paris where they told us they experienced one of the greatest evenings of their lives.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

As you will have seen from our front cover we interviewed one of the leading cast members of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie earlier this month. WWE star Sheamus (Stephen Farrelly) certainly does the Irish

proud, playing Rocksteady with a Dublin accent, but what about the actual movie? I’ve never been a fan of major francise movies and even less of old school titles revised for 21st century viewing but all things considered I was impressed. This story is one that will capture both young and old audiences. The turtles as always have a new challenge to undertake to save New York. Their enemy Shredder, who was arrested last time (thanks to The Turtles), has escaped from custody and joins forces with Baxter Stockman, a mad scientist who plans to use a serum to take over the world.

It isn’t long into the film when Rocksteady and Bebop make an appearance. I must admit their introduction to the plot certainly added some humour. They play two henchmen that provide plenty of muscle and laughs. Thankfully the turtles have some luck on their side with help from the very beautiful April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vernon Fenwick and Casey Jones, a hockey-masked vigilante. As Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello prepare for battle there is more than just one bad guy out there they must take on in order to save their city. release date: OUT NOW

THE CONJURING 2 BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

It’s been three years since the first installment of the tales of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Horror is my favorite genre of film so as soon as I heard about The Conjuring 2 I would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited. As soon as the tagline “based on true events” is added to a horror they have my attention.

40 // #intallaght / TWEET US

The film continues on with another case story from Ed and Lorraine Warren. This time around it’s 1977 and the pair must travel to Enfield, a borough in north London. While there they meet mother of four Peggy, who tells them that something evil is in her home. Ed and Lorraine believe her story when the youngest daughter starts to show signs of demonic possession. From the trailer alone the same jump out of your chair moments are to continue with this second film in the series. But this time it seems both Ed and

Lorraine have become the target. They are used to tackling spirits that haunt others, how will they manage when they become the hunted? release date: OUT NOW

ELVIS & NIXON

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS

BY RACHEL LYNCH

BY PADRAIG CONLON

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

@INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

A film about the meeting of international superstar, the King of rock and roll Elvis and the U.S president Richard Nixon? Sounds relatively boring, well this is one film you shouldn’t judge before seeing this summer. The image of Elvis and Nixon meeting is the most requested in the U.S. government’s National Archive. Back in December 21, 1970 Elvis visited the White House to ask to be made a Drug Enforcement Agent. Nobody but Elvis and Nixon were privy to the details of what the two men talked about behind closed doors, which of course makes their meeting a rich subject for comedy and drama. Although this film’s storyline takes a chance to focus on the loneliness in both men’s lives and the image and personalities both men had taken on due to the media. The untold true story behind this revealing, yet humorous moment in the Oval Office is one not to miss. Elvis turning up decked out in his usual costume requesting to meet one of the most powerful men in the world will certainly bring you some laughter. release date: OUT NOW

42 // #intallaght / TWEET US

The Secret Life of Pets is the latest animated movie from the team behind Despicable Me and Minions with an all star cast that includes the voice talents of Louis CK, Kevin Hart and Eric Stonestreet. An extremely enjoyable film that explores what pets get up to when they’re left to the their own devices, it is set in a Manhattan apartment building where a terrier named Max (C.K.) has his perfect life interrupted when his owner adopts a massive stray mongrel called Duke (Stonestreet). The new arrival is lacking in basic social skills which drives Max crazy but both dogs will have to work together when a white bunny rabbit called Snowball (Hart) drags them into a mad mission. As well as being visually stunning, the movie’s other characters are also very well written. Most of the jokes come about because these animals all have human characteristics while at the same time being lovable animals. The Secret Life of Pets will go down well with most children as it has that winning combination of animals and cartoons all served up in a very enjoyable 80 minutes of fun for all the family. release date: OUT NOW

RIHANNA - RIHANNA BROUGHT HER ANTI WORLD TOUR TO DUBLIN LAST MONTH, AND EVEN SHED A FEW TEARS

THE GRAMMY AWARDS WILL NOW ACCEPT STREAMING-ONLY SONGS BY EDWARD LAM The Recording Academy has announced that songs released on paid streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal, but not for sale on iTunes, will now be eligible for Grammy nomination. The change comes following a popular petition which asked for “free” music to be included at the Grammy Awards, backed by artists like Chance the Rapper whose latest mixtape was only released on streaming services. “We noticed that there were a number of higher-profile artists who were choosing – for philosophical reasons as much as anything – to release their music through streaming-only, and we did not want to be exclusionary toward them,” Bill Freimuth, the

academy’s senior vice president of awards, said in an interview. Other changes being made to the awards include the number of categories Grammy members can vote in being reduced to 15 from 20 – while to qualify for the best new artist category you only need to have released five singles, rather than an album. The best rap/sung collaboration is being changed to best rap/sung performance, so that artists like Drake, Chris Brown and Future who both rap and sing on a song can compete in the category alone. All changes come into effect at the 2017 Grammy Awards, which take place on February 12. Songs and albums released between October 1 2015 and September 31 2016 will be eligible, with nominations being announced on December 6.

PIERCE BROSNAN TO STAR IN A NEW TV SERIES CALLED ‘THE SON’ BY RACHEL LYNCH Pierce Brosnan is returning to TV with a new AMC series called The Son. You may be thinking you haven’t seen Brosnan in a TV series in a long time and you would be right. The last time the Irishman did any TV work was back in the 1980s when he starred in series Remington Steele that went off the air in 1987. He of course went on to have a hugely successful film career that saw him play James Bond on four occasions.

PRINCE SMASHES BILLBOARD SALES RECORDS AS HIS MUSIC SELLS IN HUGE VOLUMES FOLLOWING UNTIMELY DEATH BY EDWARD LAM Prince’s untimely death has resulted in people queuing to buy his music all around the world. In the US, he has pushed the bar on the Billboard charts. For the first full sales week following his death on April 21, five of Prince’s albums were in Billboard’s top 10, at number two, three, four, six and seven. Only Beyonce’s Lemonade kept the late musician from the top spot. Billboard has said no artist has had that many albums in the top 10. The Minneapolis star had 19 albums in Billboard’s top 200,

So what’s this show about? The Son is described as a multi-generational epic that follows America’s birth as a superpower through the bloody rise and fall of one Texas family. We are certainly looking forward to seeing Brosnan back on the small screen and if its taken him this long to take on a TV role we can only guess it is something special that has taken his attention.

beating a record of 14 previously set by The Beatles. Billboard said the top sellers were three collections of hits, plus seminal works Purple Rain and 1999. The singer, 57, sold 4.4 million albums and songs the week after his death, compared to 19,000 the week before. This all comes soon after the revelation that Prince had been in talks to play Glastonbury 2016. Michael Eavis, the 80-year-old founder of the festival, told The Sun that he had been trying to book the US star. “I was going to meet his agent,” he said. “It was all planned, but it didn’t happen.” Tributes continue to be paid to Prince since his body was found at his Paisley Park compound.

MUSIC

THIS MINIALBUM RESEMBLES OTHER MUSICAL CROSS OVER WORKS LIKE PAUL SIMON’S 1986 RELEASE, GRACELAND

MUMFORD & SONS JOHANNESBURG BY PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

Mumford and Son’s brand of whiney, fake Americana folk wouldn’t be my cup of tea and to be honest I’ve harboured a deep and lasting hatred for the band for their entire decadelong existence. They’re just too nice, too sincere, to be taken seriously as a folk band. Four posh English lads pretending to be Bluegrass?! Give me a break. And the music? Their music is so bland it sounds like what you’d get if Coldplay mated with Chris De Burgh. “Lady in…it was all yellow…is dancing with me…” Plus folk music has a history of story telling through music, something Mumford and Son’s are totally unable to do. Now that I’ve got all that off my chest you’ll be surprised to learn that I actually enjoyed their latest release Johannesburg. This five-track EP is the result of two day-long sessions the band had with co-producer Johan Hugo (half of the London-based, Afropop-influenced electronic

46 // #intallaght / TWEET US

duo the Very Best) during their tour of South Africa earlier this year. It sounds nothing like any of their past three albums, which to me is very important. It also seems to be more authentic than most of their previous output as lead track, and stand out song, There Will Be Time”, went straight to number 1 in South Africa (the band’s first number 1 single) upon release in late January. If it weren’t for Marcus Mumford’s recognizable voice, Johannesburg might not even sound like the work of him and his annoying Sons. The drums are more prominent than guitars on all five tracks and to be fair Mumford harmonizes really well with Senegalese master vocalist and African musical legend Baaba Maal who sings in his native Pulaar language. Maal also sings in French, and the album’s closing song, Si Tu Veux, is a showcase for his powerful voice and multi-lingual capabilities. One track, Ngamila, includes barely any English. Incorporating other traditional instruments like the djembe and the kora (a West African harp), this mini-album resembles other musical cross over works like Paul Simon’s 1986 release, Graceland.

The mixing of Afrobeat with Mumford and Sons rousing choruses works well and ensures that Mumford’s over emoting doesn’t dominate any of the songs. I really liked Johannesburg and the collaboration works so well it almost seems a pity they only recorded five songs. The band are on record as saying that after their last tradrock turkey, 2015’s Wilder Mind, that they wanted to move beyond the faux-Americana folk that they were famous for. On this EP they seem to be capable of trying out different musical styles and for that they deserve some (begrudging) praise. If they can lay off the banjo then brighter days may await but I still hate Mumford and Sons.

THE STONE ROSES ALL FOR ONE BY PADRAIG CONLON @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTPADRAIG

I have a lot of love in my heart for The Stone Roses. Their music is like a soundtrack to some of the best times of my life. I brought the tape of their debut album with me to Italia 90 and almost wore it out. I saw the band in one of their last ever live performance’s in Cork in 1995. I’ve seen Ian Brown live six or seven times in the last decade. I’m one of the few people who actually likes their much reviled 1994 “comeback” album Second Coming and still regularly listen to it. So you can imagine I was pretty excited last month when I pressed play on their first new music in 21 years, a single titled All For One. My excitement lasted all of a minute and a half. That’s all I needed to hear. I actually felt embarrassed for the band and had to switch it off. On my second listen I thought it was even worse. The opening of the track sounds like something you might have heard on Bosco back in the late 80’s. The lyrics, which are just repeated over and over, sound like they were written by a seven year old. Ian Brown singing “If we all join hands we’ll make a wall” actually made me feel ill. Why did they do this? Stone Roses music should make you feel great, this makes me want to stab myself in the head. If a young unsigned band came out with All For One they’d be told to fook right off. The whole thing feels like a gang of old men trying to pass themselves off as The Stone Roses. And failing utterly. If this is the best they can come up with after being back together nearly five years then they may as well knock it on the head.

BEAUTY

GWEN’S TOP 3 BEAUTY ESSENTIALS I’m not exactly what you would call a girly girl, for instance I only wear makeup when I’m going out, but there are certain beauty products that I keep nearby at all times . BY GWEN COTTER @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTGWEN

These are the winners that I trust to keep me soft skinned, strong nailed, and fresh smelling on a regular basis.

1. SALLY HANSEN VITAMIN E NAIL & CUTICLE OIL I used to have really strong nails but in recent years they seem to have become a bit thinner and prone to splitting. At the forefront of my nail regime is now applying nail oil at least once a day. (To be honest it’s usually once a day unless my cuticle are in rag order) I have found that it improves the appearance of my nails and has brought them back to nearly as strong as they once were. The small bottle lasts for months as you only apply a thin layer on each nail before rubbing it in. They do say that gentle massage of the nails encourages blood flow and might stimulate growth. It’s worth a try!

48 // #intallaght / TWEET US

2. AVEENO HAND CREAM I had a bout of contact dermatitis on my hands a few years ago and ever since I have made sure to keep a tube of Aveeno Active Naturals Hand Cream with Colloidal Oatmeal on hand, (pun intended), every day. It claims to moisturise for 24 hours and last through hand washing. It has a subtle scent that wears off fairly quickly and a nice texture that rubs in easily. While its good effects don’t wash off completely when you next wash your hands, being combined with water doesn’t cause rings to slip off your fingers either as I have found with some other hand creams. It’s not the cheapest but it really works and I tend to stock up whenever I see it on sale.

3. S URE MAXIMUM PROTECTION ANTI-PERSPIRANT I started using this deodorant shortly before my wedding last year as I wanted to ensure that I was as fresh and dry in the armpit area as possible. It’s a bit of a weird product, coming as it does in a roll-on style applicator within a box and carries a higher price tag than most deodorants on the market. I swear it’s worth it. Even in mid-summer, it really does keep you smelling good. The instructions say to apply at night before sleep for best results even if you plan to shower in the morning. I invariably forget about this step and apply it in the morning like a normal deodorant but it still works brilliantly. This Clean Scent variant is my favourite as it doesn’t smell overly sweet.

A VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE [ON THE PLAYSTATION VR] BASED ON THE BATMAN UNIVERSE HAS BEEN TEASED

PLAYSTATION VR BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

PlayStation VR goes on sale this October. Sony has really upped its game this year. Their new virtual reality headset will be on the market within three months. During a press conference ahead of the E3 gaming convention in Los Angeles, Sony revealed that PlayStation VR will go on sale in the US on October 13th for $399, around €359.98. A UK and Irish price and release date are still to be confirmed. The device is unlike other virtual reality systems as it does not require a high-

powered gaming PC, instead plugging in directly to the PlayStation 4 console. Sony also confirmed that more than 50 games will be available for PlayStation VR between launch and the end of the year, while titles based on the Star Trek and Resident Evil universes were also revealed during the press conference. A virtual reality experience based on the Batman universe was also teased during the show, and will launch in October. Two other premium virtual reality headsets have already launched this year – HTC’s Vive and the Oculus Rift, whose parent company is owned by Facebook.

Meanwhile Samsung has released the Gear VR, which uses a smartphone fitted into the headset to provide the screen. However, it is the PlayStation system many believe will be the most popular with consumers because of its ease of integration into current households by plugging into a PS4.

GAME

FIFA 17 BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

FIFA 17 is to be released this September and we take a look at everything you need to know including the new story mode. There is no denying the hype that surrounds the launch of a new FIFA game. Year after year it has generated more interest and become one of the most sought after games of all time. The FIFA video game franchise has always been about what happens on the pitch. Tweaks made to each new game generally look to make the gameplay more realistic – changing how players run, their movement off the ball, their first touch – and while FIFA 17’s game engine will undoubtedly be better than FIFA 16, that’s not the biggest talking point about this year’s game. EA has released the newest trailer for FIFA 17, titled The Journey, where players will guide “the Premier League’s next rising star” Alex Hunter on and off the pitch. Hunter’s career looks like it will have it all. Debut goals, agent issues, the rush of blood that comes with new money, the

52 // #intallaght / TWEET US

lows that can follow. It is, as the title suggests, a journey. But who is Alex Hunter? According to EA he’s a 17-year-old from “humble roots” in Clapham. You choose which Premier League team he plays for, as well as his actions off the pitch. It goes without saying his career will be shaped by both how you make him conduct himself off the pitch as well as on it. The player has been “developed with Premier League stars like Harry Kane, Eden Hazard and Anthony Martial”, in order to add another layer of authenticity. EA call these “authenticity consultants”, and Marco Reus, James Rodriguez, Dele Alli, Marcus Rashford and Reece Oxford also helped out. Other tweaks coming with FIFA 17 see the rewrite of set pieces that now mean you can decide to take freekicks with the outside of your foot or your instep and have more control over how the ball travels towards the goal. Corners,

throw-ins and penalties will also be more customised. Perhaps most excitingly in terms of general play though, FIFA 17 will see your teammates on the pitch analysing the space around them and better adjusting their movement to increase the possibilities in attack. Essentially, movement will be more realistic than ever. The game is released worldwide on September 29th.

CALL OF DUTY: INFINITE WARFARE BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

Whether you are a game lover or not you will have certainly heard of the Call of Duty franchise that began its domination of the gaming world back in 2003. 2016’s Call Of Duty looks set to be another crucial moment for the long-running series as the game steps into an area it has never been before – outer space. As you can see, this is a huge departure from the sort of combat the game is known for, even with the futuristic settings of recent years. So what exactly can players expect? The trigger point for the warfare is an invasion by a militant faction with space-based capabilities. The first level we saw depicts a massive attack on Geneva, with invading soldiercarrying pods falling from the sky alongside bombs.

The weaponry has advanced again too – with a new shotgun able to lock onto and fire at enemies at several points, and spider drones that double as grenades. As with all Call Of Duty games the carnage is rapid and manic, but it’s the drastic change of pace and setting that is startling towards the end of the level, as players jump into a futuristic jet to blast into low orbit. The visuals here are stunning – Call Of Duty at its finest, while the space-based dogfight that ensues at the end of this ascent is like nothing this series has even done before. The game isn’t done there though. Following another dogfight in the second level we saw hand-to-hand combat in zero gravity. Using a grapple hook to pull in some enemies and boosters to out-manoeuvre others, it’s a type of ridiculous combat that only COD can get away with. Though a lot of the technology is once again new, the way you apply it looks much the same – this is a control system and layout many are familiar with, and it remains in place in Infinite

Warfare. There are new tools to call in more regular air support and identify and mark enemies, but frequent COD players should slip them into their repertoire with little effort. Infinite Warfare then is COD personified – loud, brash and manic – but it’s a formula that fans of the series love. There are definitely questions over whether it’s gone too far this year, becoming too ridiculous even for Call Of Duty with the full-scale solar system-sized war.

MOTOR

MAZDA 3 BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

Last month I headed down to Stuarts Garage’s located on the Greenhills Road to test drive a brand new Mazda 3. On first glance I was impressed by the top spec finish of the exterior, this model looks classy yet sporty all at the same time. For me the most eye catching feature of the Mazda 3 is the front grille. Overall the body styling expresses dynamic motion in every detail. Having such a top class exterior finish can sometimes mean the interior can come second but not with the Mazda 3. I was just as impressed with the inside as I was with the outside; so much so I don’t really know where to start. I suppose straight down the middle. Yes, the dash is the first thing most road users are drawn to when they take a seat inside. The main feature is the large 7” LCD colour touchscreen set in a satin-chrome case. The fabrics feel luxurious and soft. There really is a top spec, premium look to this model from the satin chrome and tactile finishes. There is also an option of leather seats if you are looking for an even greater sense of luxury. Finally the drive itself, well that is also going to receive rave reviews. As soon as I took off I was wowed due to the way it practically glided along the road. The model I test drove was the Mazda 3 1.5 Diesel GT/ Platinum. It really is right up with the class best for control and enjoyment. Everything is simply laid out in this model and will be the type of car that suits both the young single male/female looking for the sporty sleek option or the family looking for that added bit of excitement. Mazda’s engineers have achieved that tricky balance of comfort and joy. We spoke with Stuarts Garage’s Sales Manager Jason Phillips who told us why he believes this model is one of the best in its category on the road “This model covers all bases. If you are looking for a family car or something a bit sportier, while looking the part, I would go with the top of the range platinum model. It covers everything. You have got petrol engines and diesel engines too. Part of the Mazda philosophy is you are meant to enjoy your drive, it’s not just a car to get in and just get where you are going, you are meant to enjoy it and have fun with your driving”. Prices for the Mazda 3 start from €23,695 with road tax as low as €180. For more information on the entire Mazda range you can drop down today to their showroom, call them on (01) 462 4100 or check them out online stuartsgarages.com

BOOK

BRIAN KIRK RISING SON BY RACHEL LYNCH @INTALLAGHT #INTALLAGHTRACHEL

The Centenary events may well have come to an end but books and stories relating to the original events are continuing to be written and read. The latest book to come to our attention is one written for a younger audience, The Rising Son by Brian Kirk takes a look at how the 1916 Rising affected the life of a 12 year old boy. The story (aimed at 10-14 year olds) is set between 2016 and 1916 and follows the story of London child Jack who is left in the care of his grandfather in Dublin on the centenary of the 1916 Rising. While in Dublin, in his grandfather’s house, Jack is drawn to an old blanket. The blanket belonged to his late grandmother and seems to have magic powers. It is the week of the centenary of the 1916 Rising and Jack’s grandfather sets out to teach him some history. In doing so he awakens in Jack a sense of his Irish identity. Thanks to the magic of the blanket Jack gets to

56 // #intallaght / TWEET US

see the events of the Rising firsthand and, at the same time, he uncovers the truth about his own family, past and present. In this novel the main character, Jack is used as a means of approaching familiar subjects with fresh eyes. Because his mother has been estranged from her father for years, Jack’s encounters with Ireland in 2016 and 1916 are equally unsullied by any traditional prejudice. No matter how strange things get or how difficult to understand his life becomes, he tries his best to accept what he finds in both worlds. And in elaborating his relationships with family and friends in the present and the past he learns that life is not straightforward at all, but all the more fulfilling because of it. This book is different to many of the others when it comes to the story of the Rising and I have to say I really enjoyed the story told through the eyes of a young boy with an Irish family but from London. Although this book is labeled as one for a younger audience I enjoyed it immensely. Author Brian Kirk says that when he began writing the novel he had assumed that the story was going to be another one for adults, but that it was his children that soon changed his mind. “Why don’t you write something that we want to read?” they asked.

Only then did he realise that The Rising Son, with its mix of history, magic and adventure, was actually more suited to a child reader’s natural curiosity and open-mindedness. The Rising Son by Brian Kirk is available for purchase at Eason nationwide and from all good book shops. For more details see briankirkwriter.com Brian Kirk is an award winning poet and short story writer from Dublin. He was shortlisted for Hennessy New Irish Writer Awards for fiction in 2008 and 2011. His maternal Grandfather was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) while his Grand Aunt was quartermaster for Cumann na mBan during 1916. Consequently he has a balanced view of history.

THE WRITING CURE Local author Carolann Copland continues to share her insights on writing in the run up to the Carousel Aware Indie Book Awards in October. It is said that there’s a book in everyone, but not everyone will sit and write a book. I don’t agree that we could all be interested in the same thing, but I do believe that everyone can be and should be a writer. Last month I suggested that you pick up your pen or your laptop and write for the sake of it. Write yourself happy. Literally, write your heart out. Aware, like most mental health charities, recognise the importance of writing as part of the self-help process for sufferers of depression or anxiety. We need to value the therapeutic nature of getting our feelings down on the page. It was one of the reasons I chose Aware as the associated charity for The CAP Awards. Carousel Writers’ Centre didn’t set out as a place for people suffering in their lives to come for peace of mind. It was a centre for writing. But writers streamed through its door over the years, attracted by the quiet of the house and gardens, and the beautiful view that can’t help but inspire the driest of pens. Some writers who wouldn’t call

themselves writers at first, found themselves pouring their hearts out onto the page. FREE writing is how most of our Carousel writers push the words out when it feels that nothing will come. The concept is easy. Setting yourself a set time, ten or fifteen minutes a day, to pick up a pen and let it flow. You can write anything as long as the words are flowing; a diary, memories, a rant, a shopping list or to do list, a descriptive scene… but don’t lift the pen away from the page. As long as you are writing, that’s all that matters. The submission deadline for The CAP Awards is past and now the judges find themselves busy reading the entries over the summer months and choosing a short list. Here are some words from some of the judges about why they came on board to help with these particular awards. “I am delighted that the proceeds will go to AWARE Ireland. As depression affects many around Ireland and the rest of the world, how wonderful it is to be a part of such an amazing showcase that can help lessen the

burden. As an author who has struggled with depression for years, I am thrilled to combine my passion for reading and writing with such a good cause that’s personal to my own story and the stories of so many I know.” Jax Miller, Author. “AWARE is an organisation that is close to my heart as mental health is an issue that affects us all in one way or another, and the more people are open about this issue, then the easier it is for us as a society to face up to it.” Tony Canavan, editor of Books Ireland magazine. “…the charity at the heart of it, AWARE, does amazing work. How could I resist?” Louise Phillips, Author. “It took me about two seconds to agree to come on board as a judge for this competition - Carolann said ‘young adult novels’ and ‘proceeds to Aware’ and she had me.” Claire Hennessy, Young Adult Author. Why don’t you try The Writing Cure? You might find yourself entering he CAP Awards yourself next year!

SPORTS NEWS JOHN KAVANAGH IS FIRST PRESIDENT OF NEW MMA NATIONAL GOVERNING BODY BY PADRAIG CONLON Last month the UFC welcomed the move to regulate mixed martial arts (MMA) in Ireland following the death of 28-yearold Portuguese fighter Joao Carvalho after a fight in Dublin in April. A lack of formal regulations for MMA is an ongoing issue for the UFC in a number of European countries, in these regions the organisation operates under the rules of the Nevada Athletic Commission. The formation of this new organisation also represents a huge step towards Mixed Martial Arts being recognised as a sport in Ireland. The new organisation will be known as the Irish Mixed Martial Arts Association (IMMAA) and will be a member of the International Mixed Martial Arts Association thus agreeing to follow their rules and guidelines. The IAPA had previously acted as an associated body of the Irish Amateur Wrestling Association, which governs grappling sports in Ireland, but Sport Ireland chief John Treacy said that until Irish MMA was regulated by their own national governing body, the sport

IRELAND - IRELAND HAVE DEPARTED THE EUROS BUT WE TAKE THE PRIZE FOR THE BEST FANS

BIG CHANCE FOR PAJO TO SHINE ON SKY BY PADRAIG CONLON Pajo gets back in the ring at the end of this month for a meeting with Josh Warrington in Leeds on July 30th live on Sky Sports. The Punisher’s opponent, who will be fighting in front of his home crowd at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, is a former European Champion and currently holds the WBC International Featherweight title. With a 23-0-KO4 record 25 year old Warrington will be a formidable opponent for Pajo and the prize on offer for both men is a likely World title fight against IBF champion Lee Selby. On the same night Pajo lost to Gary Russell Jr in April, Warrington took a unanimous decision against Japanese fighter Hisashi Amagasa in Leeds. Warrington, a Sky Sports name, is one of Matchroom’s prized fighters at the moment and they have been trying to organise a showdown with Selby for months. If Pajo were to win they’d have to rip up all their plans and

start looking to maybe getting something organised in Ireland In announcing the fight, promoter Eddie Hearn said this meeting presents a big opportunity for both fighters. “Warrington vs Hyland is a fight that we’ve looked to make in the past and it’s a real crossroads clash. Patrick has only had two defeats both in world title challenges, while Josh is set for his first shot at a world crown later this year, victory for both men on July 30 is vital. “Their battle tops a great bill with Huddersfield’s Tyrone Nurse and Hull’s Tommy Coyle meeting in a mouth-watering Yorkshire classic for Tyrone’s British superlightweight title.” Tommy’s local rival Luke Campbell MBE is back in title action and Gamal Yafai defends his Commonwealth superbantamweight strap against Yorkshireman Josh Wale. “There’s a host of classy fighters in action including one of the world’s top prospects in Ryan Burnett and hard-hitting Brixton heavyweight Dillian Whyte.”

SPORTS NEWS LEINSTER RUGBY SET TO PLAY GLOUCESTER IN TALLAGHT STADIUM BY PADRAIG CONLON

MARK BYRNE SIGNS FOR GILLINGHAM BY PADRAIG CONLON Kilnamanagh native Mark Byrne became Gillingham’s first signing of the summer last month when he put pen to paper on a two year contract with the League One side. The 27 year old midfielder just completed an excellent season on a personal level with former club Newport where he picked up the award for Supporters Club Player of the Year. As captain he was instrumental in helping the Welsh club preserve their football league status where they eventually finished 22nd in League Two and avoided relegation. His move sees him link up again with Justin Edinburgh who was his manager at Newport and also recently made the move to Gillingham. Speaking to the clubs website on the day he signed, the Tallaght man said: “I’m delighted to sign, I’m happy to be here and looking forward to getting started. I’ve worked under Justin before,

66 // #intallaght / TWEET US

and when I found out there was interest from him and the club, I was more than happy to work with him again.” Justin Edinburgh believes Byrne’s arrival will strengthen his side for the 2016/17 EFL season. Byrne, who also played under ex Spurs defender Edinburgh at Rushden & Diamonds, comes with a glowing reference: “I know Mark well, having worked with him on two occasions previously,” said Edinburgh. “He’s a dynamic midfielder, a real all-rounder who can get goals yet cover a lot of ground at the same time. “Mark’s driven, energetic and tenacious; he’s got that bite managers want in their midfield. Bringing him to the club is a fantastic coup for us - his arrival strengthens us, no question about it.I have no doubt that he’ll become a crowd favourite with the Gills supporters.” Mark Byrne signed for Notts Forest from Crumlin United aged 18 in 2007 and since then his career has taken him to Burton Albion (loan), Rushden (loan), Barnet and Newport.

Leinster Rugby will play English Zurich Premiership club Gloucester in a pre season friendly next month in Tallaght Stadium. The match, which takes place on Saturday 20th August, will be the provinces’ second pre season game as they face Ulster the week before. Fans may get to see Leinster’s three new signings make their debuts in Tallaght with Ireland star Robbie Henshaw, ex Munster player Ian Nagle and New Zealander Jamison Gibson-Park all likely to feature on the day. The signing of the 24 year old Maori All Blacks scrum half represents a great coup for Leinster as Isaac Boss is set to leave and their other scrum half, Ireland international Eoin Redden is 35 and coming to the end of his career. Gloucester have an Irish connection as their Director of Rugby is former Ulster and Ireland out half David Humphreys and some of their current stars include captain, and England international, Billy Twelvetrees and Wales fly half James Hook. Gloucester Chief Executive Stephen Vaughan spoke this month on the implications for the sport of rugby in England of the Brexit result. One immediate concern of the Brexit is the future of the Kolpak players in the Premiership who, even though they are not EU nationals, do not need work permits. In rugby, it applies to players from the South Sea islands and South Africa. “We have players at Gloucester who would potentially be affected,” says Vaughan.

INROVERS

LOOKING AHEAD IN JULY BY PADRAIG CONLON This month promises to be very interesting because aside from the Europa League, The Hoops have two mouth watering games coming up. On Friday 15th Bohs are the visitors to Tallaght Stadium for the Derby and The Hoops will be looking to inflict another battering like the 4-0 demolition they carried out in Dalymount in April. On a momentous night for the travelling Hoops fans who were lucky enough to be there, they saw Rovers record their biggest league win in 52 years in the fixture and condemn the hosts to utter humiliation. No doubt they’ll be out to avenge their night of shame and it promises to be another exciting chapter in this century long story. Hopefully Rovers will be heading up the road for their clash with champions Dundalk in Oriel Park the following week in good form on the back of a convincing win against The Gypsies. Rovers have an awful lot of ground to make up on the Louth club and nothing but a victory will do here if The Hoops

68 // #intallaght / TWEET US

are to maintain any interest in the title race. Oriel Park hasn’t been a happy hunting ground in recent years for Rovers and their last trip there back in September resulted in a 2-0 defeat courtesy of goals from ex Hoop’s Ronan Finn and Sean Gannon. In fact you have to go all the way back to September 2011 for the last time Rovers won a league game there. That night, when Rohan Ricketts made his Hoops debut, goals from Billy Dennehy and Stephen O’Donnell gave Rovers a 2-1 as they marched towards the league title. Rovers end the month with a trip to strugglers Bray Wanderers on Friday 29th and they’ll be looking to keep up their excellent record against the Wicklow club which sees them unbeaten in the fixture since March 2011. The Seagulls appointed ex Rovers player Harry Kenny as their manger at the start of last month promoting him from assistant manager after the departure of Mick Cooke. He had a good start to his new job when his team managed to get a 0-0 draw away to Sligo in his first game in charge. Rovers should be too strong for the Seagulls and will look to end the month on a high by claiming all three points.

NEW SPONSORSHIP BY PADRAIG CONLON Last month Rovers signed an exclusive sponsorship deal with Herbalife which will run until March 2018 and sees the US firm become the nutrition and sports performance partner of the club. Tom Mohan, who was recently appointed as the new Under 19 national head coach, took charge of the team for these games as this group of players will all be eligible for the UEFA U19 Championships Qualifying Round in October. Speaking after their final game the gaffer was happy with getting to work with the players ahead of those qualifiers: “With travelling we’ve had to pack a lot into the week already but we’ve had good few days with the players. “We had two competitive games and an opportunity for me to see and work with more players and help us prepare for next season’s competitive games. “We’ve a number of homebased players in the squad which is testament to how they are progressing at their clubs. Some have already progressed to first team football and it’s pleasing to see their progression. “The players that are in can stake a claim to show that they can play a part next season.”

The programme kicks off with the ever popular heritage walks of South Dublin County’s Villages. If you fancy getting out into the countryside, there are guided walks at Bohernabreena Reservoir, or you can head to Massy’s Woods and learn all about the fascinating history of this estate with historian Frank Tracy. One of the highlights of the programme and something that is sure to be popular is the tours of Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel which are kindly facilitated by the Irish Air Corps. Booking is essential for these tours. And while the big kids among us may have our heads in the clouds, we can’t forget the young ones in the family. There is plenty for children, from Irish History Live, the hands on museum where children can experience the world of round towers and Vikings, to craft workshops and family tree events. The events will also include talks, movie screenings, exhibitions, storytelling and much more! For the full programme and booking details,
