The Institute for Family-Owned Business is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization committed to supporting, strengthening and empowering family-owned businesses throughout the state of Maine. The Institute serves family business owners, executives and employees through a wide range of continuing education programs, networking opportunities and consulting services. The Institute is a comprehensive resource for family-owned business.

Strengthening Family Business is the core of our mission The Institute for Family-Owned Business (IFOB) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the success of family-owned businesses in the State of Maine. To accomplish this mission, we have developed four affinity groups and are adding two more for 2018. These groups meet several times each year for networking and discussion on issues of interest to members.

Space is limited, and advance reservation is required for many of these groups.

Our Affinity Groups include: CEO Central I & CEO Central II –

A facilitated roundtable discussion designed exclusively for CEOs of family businesses. Our current CEO Central I includes CEOs of non-competing businesses with gross revenues of $5 million and above. Our new CEO Central II will be for CEOs of businesses with gross revenues of $1-5 million.

These groups meet five times a year. Future CEO Central I dates include July 24, September 25, and November 27. Stay tuned for details on CEO Central II. Sponsored by Mainebiz.

CEO Central

Women’s Leadership Forum –

A facilitated roundtable discussion among women in leadership roles within family businesses. Our goals for this forum include support, encouragement, inspiration, and information. This group meets several times a year. The future meetings include two breakfast groups on July 31 and October 2, as well as an evening social on September 18. Sponsored by Key Private Bank.

Women in Family Business –

A series of programs designed by women that focus on information that is important and useful to them. These programs are open to both family-owned businesses, associate partners, and future Wine and Nine Golf Series members. This group meets several times a year with a variety of programs. Coming up on June 7 is “Find Your Focus: Master the Skill of Avoiding Distractions.” Our “Wine and Nine Golf Series” begins on July 10 and continues every Tuesday for six weeks at the Nonesuch River Golf Course. All skill levels are welcome and will be provided with clubs and instruction! This year, we will wrap up the Series with a Golf Scramble - including men - on August 21!

Next Generation –

All generations working in a family business benefit from the information provided in these meetings. Participants Next Generation Peer Advisory Group learn about communications, transitions, generational management styles, balancing family and business, and more! We have three peer advisory groups that all have five coach-facilitated meetings a year. These groups include: Senior, Executive I, and Executive II. The Senior Group is for members of the next generation who are working at the mid-management level (i.e. department managers and area managers), and the Executive Groups are for members of the next generation who are working at top management levels (i.e. Vice President, President, CEO, CFO).

Leaders in Transition –

A new affinity group that will meet on May 31. This roundtablestyle program is for owners of family-businesses who are in various stages of transition. Peer leaders will share from their own experience, both what has worked and what they have found challenging. Individuals will have the opportunity to discuss concerns and learn from each other. Typical discussion topics include the experience of preparing the next generation to take over the reins, tackling barriers to letting go (and the consequences to not doing so), and personal hopes/concerns about the next chapter of their lives.

We offer two additional open programs that members and future members Associate Partners with Family are welcome to attend. The next open program for all is “The Art of Navigating Businesses Family Succession Planning,” on September 13. We also have an open Holiday Social for the Next Gen on December 5 to introduce potential new family members to these groups.

Associate Partners –

We have several Affinity Groups that are designed for our familyowned businesses. We would also like to develop one for our Associate Partners who can learn and work together with referrals as they help family-owned businesses. We will custom design this group to meet the needs of these members. Stay tuned for more details!
