About four months have passed since Squares Invasion- The 50cm b y 5 0 c m P a i n t i n g S h o w t h a t t o o k p l a c e i n O c t o b e r l a s t y e a r. T h e main objectives of Squares Invasion are to promote painting as an art form which seems to be forgotten in this digital era and to create a platform for talented up-and-coming local painters to showcase their works. It is my great joy to present this exhibition “Daixy Galasy” by the S q u a r e s I n v a s i o n - T h e 5 0 c m b y 5 0 c m Pa i n t i n g S h o w m e r i t p r i z e winners, Dina Razak and Fyerool Darma. These two young, talented artists have come together within a short time, brainstormed and painted their hearts out @INSTINC STUDIOS. This exhibition is i n s p i r e d b y t h e s o n g D a i s i e s o f t h e G a l a x y b y E e l s . S u r p r i s i n g l y, f o r such a simple record Daisies of the Galaxy is never boring. Like the paintings in this exhibition, though they looked simple and naive at f i r s t, b u t u p o n c l o s e r e x a m i n a t i o n , t h e t e x t u r e s, l a y e r s a n d n u a n c e s of each of these paintings will electrify you. In “Daixy Galasy”, I also found moments of love, loss, loneliness, happiness, irony and optimism. Slow down and smell the roses. I would like to thank the artists for their time, thought and energy they have put towards creating this exhibition and Fyerool for designing the collaterals for this exhibition as well as this beautiful catalogue and ever yone else who have made this possible. This exhibition “Daixy Galasy ” defends and celebrates painting as a m e d i u m . I t h i n k i t ’ s c l e a r p a i n t i n g d i d n ’ t d i s a p p e a r a n d i t w o n ’ t. (b. 1987) h t t p : / / d i n a r o z a n a . w e e b l y. c o m / My memor y is my vast vault of all my experiences. It is definitely not a selective memor y, I don’t want to control it. It ’s all there whenever I want or need it. These are a series of works mainly inspired by photographs of sur faces, as well as an experimental approach with unconventional materials. I am constantly revisiting certain memories of my childhood and I was ver y much fond of different sur faces that I stumble upon during my travel. As a result, these materials are manipulated and explored so as to recreate a certain atmospheric memor y for an instance, a particular place. Thus painting in multiple layers that would create a certain level of depth to my works are to exemplify aspects of nostalgia. I believe in the most commonplace materials for instance: earth, sand and dust, it is from them that we may gain some knowledge of the structure of reality. It is almost like an enjoyment that can be found in debris, scattered at random. Dina graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts at LA SALLE College of the Arts in 2010. She has since participated in various exhibitions such as Alliance Francaise’s 2nd France + Singapore New Generation Artists (2010) and Post Museum’s Redlight (2009) to name a few. She recently bagged the Merit Prize for INSTINC ’s Squares Invasion – The 50cm x 50cm Painting Show in 2011. She was also awarded the Highly Commended Prize for the 28th UOB Painting of the Year competition in 2009.

Lorca The sound of that voice is universal, the language that we speak, is simila r but never identical. That voice, is ones ’ identity. I n searching for his voice, Si Dia Yang Didiamkan / That Muted He turns to hi s past experiences; a period where he wa s castrated from voicing his thoughts and wanders in his mental phantasm, to find solitude and serenity amids t the pressures from the merit based society he lives in. These paintings are part of the series, Si Dia Yang Didiamkan / That Muted He. Fyerool Darma paints fables with variou s mediums in layers. The layers to him are life experience s that has been buried due to time. Hi s cherub like figures are manifestations o f the few visual influences from his childhood. He had exhibited at Alliance Francaise de Singapour (Sour Jokes) , Goodman Art Center (The City Limits ) The Substation (minimART) and INSTINC (Squares Invasion 50 x 50 Painting Show) where he received the Merit Prize award. His paintings were also featured in Paintings Findings 2.0 Singapore. Fyerool Darma is currently pursuing hi s BA(Hons) in Fine Arts at LA SALLE, College of the Arts, Singapore.
