Statement Of Purpose For Microbiology

Statement of Purpose

Name: Ujjwal Rimal

Area of Interest: Microbiology and Immunology.

During his last few months, my grandfather had trouble falling asleep. Frequent cough and his debilitating health was the matter of concern for our family. The nights had always been horrible as my father had to take care of him till the dawn. At that time, lung cancer was a fatal disease in Nepal. His demise gave me an insight into how illness can affect a person's life and of the people close to him. Intrigued by knowing that a simple microscopic cell with an uncontrolled division took my dearest one far from me, I began to ponder over the enigma of a microbiological world. As I grew, my curiosity and inquisitiveness towards diseases began to escalate. Thus, I pursued my growing interest by opting for Biology as one of the majors in high school. After completion of Intermediate in Science with biology, I decided to pursueMicrobiology as my major in undergraduate studies at Tri–Chandra Multiple Campus...show more content...

These have forced me to look for other opportunities to continue my education. Department of Biology at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has excellent facilities and leading laboratories in which I can fully realize my scientific interests. I would regard my admission to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette not only as a great honor but also as a great responsibility and an obligation to work hard. Furthermore, I chose your country because it is the most developed country in the world which has the ability to provide all types of education to the domestic as well as the international student. It has a quality educational institution for better education. Besides these, a lot of foreign students come to the USA to pursue theirhigher education, which provides an opportunity to meet new peoples and share knowledge, experience, as well as a cultural

Norman Cousins said, "Laughter is a powerful way to tap positive emotions" (Moss 1). Humor is studied by many researchers in sociology, psychology, art, literature, and medicine. When people wonder whether humor aids in areas other than health, a treasure trove of possible benefits to the learning or educational community is opened up. Humor can be used as a tool to promote learning.Research speaks to the many benefits of humor in healing, to its benefits in the classroom or boardroom, from reducing stress of students or employees, to boosting self–esteem and feelings of camaraderie. Humor can be applied in the boardroom as well. A 2006 article in Academy of Management Perspectives by Eric J. Romero and Kevin W. Cruthirds reviews the benefits of using humor in the workplace. He advocates taking it more seriously by making it a "multifunctional management tool that can be used to achieve many objectives" (Romero, Cruthirds). The findings encourage a more strategic use of humor, similar to selecting the proper tool from a toolkit in order to achieve positive outcomes for the organization (Romero, Cruthirds). Humor can generate benefits in terms of organizational citizenship, managerial behavior and, workforce creativity. As more studies point to the benefits of humor in the workplace, more managers are being instructed on how to use this important resource or tool to better manage their team/s or projects (Romero, Cruthirds).Regardless of the setting, school or work,

The Benefits of Humor for Our Health Essay

Introduction

For many years I felt like a prisoner trapped in a body, which routinely attacked me. I couldn't believe my misfortune. But then something changed. I became curious about what the attacks were, what caused them, and whether I really had to continue to suffer. Was it possible, I wondered, that I could discover the root cause of my anxiety and resolve it at the source? After all, I had lived decades without panic attacks being a part of my life, so I knew it was possible. Little did I know that in making this decision to exchange the fear of my body for a genuine desire to understand it, the seemingly insurmountable and unfair challenges presented by my panic attacks would transform into one of life's greatest gifts to me: an incredible...show more content... Despite the fact that it was forced and fake, the laughter actually worked. Within seconds the panic was replaced by calm. And I found myself wondering whether the writers of The Reader's Digest had been demonstrating greater insight than I had previously realized when they titled their feature on jokes, Laughter is the Best Medicine. Seriously. The laughter had worked and I was stunned by how simple and immediate the remedy was. Indeed, the answer had resided within me all along. With my curiosity reignited, I wanted an explanation for why the laughter managed to derail the attacks I had suffered for so long. So I paid attention to the shifts that I felt in my body whenever I used laughter to do what I thought of as turning off my fight–or–flight response. In doing so, I noticed that a belly laugh seemed to force the air out of my lungs by pressing against my diaphragm. Once my lungs were so emptied, my body automatically responded by drawing in a long, slow, deep breath. And in the first deep breath's wake there would be the sense of calm that I Get more content

Flashing red and blue lights accompanied by an alarming siren in the distance is signaled when the double doors of the emergency room burst open. Pushed by several nurses, doctors, and other medical staff, a lone hospital stretcher with a bloody, wounded patient flies through the medical center towards the doors to the operating room. This image is what generally comes to mind when you think about an emergency room. Many people believe that the hospital's emergency room is a dark and scary place. While this is true, the common misconception is that the emergency room is a place clear of humor, when in reality humor is present, even necessary, for many reasons. Many television shows, like the showER, are based in the setting of the...show more content...

Finally, humor keeps those that work in traumatic situations from becoming disheartened. Because of the nature of their work, most of the individuals that work in the ER have a high burnout rate. There are so many negative aspects of working in the ER that doctors and other workers cannot handle for an extended period of time. The anxieties due to the unknowns such as how many people will need medical attention, what the nature of their injuries are, etc. cause additional stress to an already stressful schedule. Because accidents can happen at any time, ER workers have to work at night, which is unappealing to many. Because of these negative aspects, ER work is very difficult, and many people who work in this environment eventually want out. Humor lightens the blow of many of these negative aspects, and at least makes working in the hospital a little more bearable. Humor keeps hospital staff from physically becoming depressed. With the mass number of illness, surgery, and death that they are encompassed with, working in the hospital can wipe out one's physical energy and mental state of well–being. Humor offers a levity of the morose and depressing environment that they are surrounded by each day. The emergency room is not a room that people should take lightly. The very nature of its services that it provides to its clientele prove it to be a

Laughter is an essential human phenomenon. Smiling in response to pleasant physical conditions occurs in early development, usually in the first month of life. As a motor reflex, laughter is usually present by the time a child is 4 months old. By the age of eighteen months, a child smiles once every six minutes, and by four years of age, the rate increases to one smile every one and one–third minutes. The ratio of laughs to smiles increases from one laugh to every ten smiles as eighteen months to one every three smile at four years. The individual differences in the rate of both laughing and smiling become greater as the children grow older. (Stearns, 1972) The instinctual development of smiling and laughing occurs very...show more content...

The causes of laughter can be divided into three main groups. One manifestation is laughter as a reflex, such as due to ticking. Another is as a psychosomatic response prompted by a specific stimulus. This is an informative stimulus such as a word, sentence, gesture, action, recollection, situation, etc. This requires the involvement of perception, learning, and memory. This reaction may or may not be terminated voluntarily. The third is again a psychosomatic response, but is differentiated because it is not caused by an adequate informative stimulus and can be terminated voluntarily.

Within this categorization, there are different types of laughter: mirthful laughter, pathological laughter, etc. Mirthful laughter, a lesser studied, but highly interesting type will be the focus of this discussion. A commonly held belief is that mirthful laughter and humor result in positive physical, psychological, and social fitness. With such a expansive area of influence, it is difficult to understand how such laughter influences the body.

Laughter in healing

Studies of the physiology of mirthful laughter, scientifically known as gelotology, are a fairly recent phenomenon. Descriptions of convalescence through positive emotional states have renewed interest in the healing potential of mirthful laughter. Norman Cousins' accounts of the therapeutic effects of laughter during his treatment and recovery from ankylosing spondylitis

The film "Medicine Man" gives a very clear indication of the consequences of habitat destruction. In the film, a professor and his research assistant set out to find a plant that holds the cure of cancer, only to have it destroyed by land clearing in the Amazon Basin. The land clearing also severely disrupts the peaceful, sustainable lifestyle of a tribe of natives and a huge amount of flora and fauna. It shows us the damage we wrought with our deforestation on a slightly exaggerated, nut no less effective scale.

The main idea of the film is to show habitat destruction and its impacts on the environment. It succeeds in showing the rapid rate at which logging and land–clearing is taking place. Such human activities...show more content... Wealthy corporations usually commission such land–clearings and use the land for farming. However they do not think about the native plants, animals and people who have more right to the land than they do.

The film also highlights the difference between the city modern, city lifestyle and the lifestyle of the native people. The people of the city live more luxuriously than the native people, but their lifestyle is not sustainable. The "city people" suck their environment dry in order to gain their creature comforts, while the native people make a minimal impact on their environment, only taking what they need. The environment can cope with the impacts made by the indigenous people but not the city dwellers. As a result, the environment in which we live is heavily polluted whereas that of the indigenous people is not.

The film also makes a subtle point about biodiversity. In a rainforest such as the Amazon, countless different species can be found in a relatively small area. Some of these species are found only in that area. Therefore by clearing the forest without investigating the flora and fauna first could result in extinction of a species. For example, in the film the plant and the species of ant that holds the key to the cure of cancer had never been found anywhere else in the world. So the destruction of that part of the rainforest could well have meant genocide of the two species. If it was real life instead of a

Laughter is the Best Medicine "Laugh my friend, for laughter ignites a fire within the pit of your belly and awakens your being." Stella and Blake. The film Patch Adams directed by Tom Shady is a fact–based biography and comedy based on a physician named Hunter "Patch" Adams. The film was produced in 1998 in Asheville, North Carolina. Patch Adams is the main character who believed that doctors should incorporate happiness and laughter when taking care of sick patients. He believes happiness and laughter is the best medicine because joy is a gift from the holy spirit. This film is an eye opener to the audience, especially people who are studying to work in the medical field. After watching this film, the intended audience would agree that doctors who use Patch Adams theory, laughter is the best medicine for ill patients will provide a better health care system, and cause the patients to enjoy and have a better perception of life. The theme of the movie is laughter is the best medicine because joy will always cure the soul. The movie started off with the main character Patch Adams admitting himself into a mental hospital. Being in the mental hospital he came upon a rude psychiatrist that didn't care to help or listen to the patients. This made him realize he wanted to go to medical school and properly help, care and treat patients. Patch released himself from the Mental facility and went to Virginia Medical College. One part in the movie that makes you understand the theme is when Patch Adams dresses up as an angel which symbolizes spiritual figures. Patch Adams was determined to become a medical doctor once he started visiting patients in the Medical school clinical hours. This made him truly passionate about helping people. Patch Adams believed the medical staff did not appreciate the methods of healing patients as much as they should, they care about the money instead. He cheers the patients up by making light out of the idea of death. He dressed up as a clown for the children who had cancer, asked patients what they wanted to do before they pass away, and he tried to make their wishes come true. Although, he had the hospital nurses and patients on his Get

"Medical literature is the scientific literature of medicine: articles in journals and texts in books devoted to the field of medicine"(Wikipedia). When entering the healthcare field, it is very important to familiarize yourself with medical literature and how to properly document medical findings. AMA format was not designed to be used for a research paper. It was designed for the use of medical journal articles. A paper written in AMA format must include four major parts: A title page, an abstract, the main body, and thereference page(AMA Formatting). The main body is further divided into 4 parts: introduction, methods, results, and discussion(AMA Formatting). Each part is very important and has its own set of guidelines. In the following text I will further discuss each part and how to properly assemble a medical paper in AMA format. Beforewriting a paper in AMA format it is very important to understanding how to format your paper. Modern medicine has advanced drastically over the last decade, with improvements in fighting cancers and diseases that would have killed someone in the past, but one section of modern medicine has lacked any major developmental improvement. Vaccinations are a stagnant medicine, there is little research put into them. According to the world health organization the core work for the next ten years will be to identify vaccines and prioritize research, create guidelines of research standards, and improve research and product capacity, turn results into practices. While all of these are improvements the World Health Organization needs to improve on modern vaccinations already being used. Most vaccines in market still use older chemicals such as mercury or aluminum, which has proved to have adverse reactions on humans; in an essay regarding the anti–vaccination movement Jason Behrmann, a doctor at the French department of medicine and bioethics, stated "certain vaccine recipients experience an allergic reaction that is often not due to the vaccine 's active ingredients" and goes on to state "but rather its packaging, additives, or trace contaminants originating from the manufacturing process" (p2).

The number of Vaccinations a child receives before going to school has been steadily increasing in the last several years. Along with vaccinations there has been an alarming rise in SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome and many people believe this is because of the number of

Laughter is the Best Medicine Encouraging other Pastors has always been a passion of mine. When I was invited to speak at a Pastor's retreat at a northern Saskatchewan camp about coping with stress, I accepted, offering not my expertise but my own experience of what it was to be a survivor. Older pastors were trained to be available 24/7, and as the demands and nature of ministry changed, many became victims of over–responsibility and high self– expectations. Over the years, pastoral families have experienced the short end of the balance of time between home and parish needs. Much more consideration is now extended to young Pastor both in their training and continuing education in the area of stress management. The retreat was one of those continuing education events. It was a full day with an overnight and a breakfast session. There was an evident uneasiness among the group as they assembled, but as the sessions progressed, the participants were able to reflect on their own experiences of parish life over against my own. I approached the issue with genuine honesty and openness, and it was not long before the group was openly sharing their successes and failures in balancing time schedules and providing adequate self–care for themselves. "Why I am Interested in Medicine and How I Will Use It to Provide Good Health Care for the People of Indonesia in the Future." Many people often questioned about my choice, why I choose medicine as my major and my career in the future. Why I Am Interested In Medicine

There are many forms of expression inside of everybody; however the most common form is laughter. The sound of laughter can be heard all around the worlds every second, it helps us relieve stress and makes us feel better about ourselves. Comedy movies play such an important role in helping us laugh. There are many forms of movies out there today. In spite of the recent incline in action and horror movies today, comedy movies has always been my number one choice because it gives people an opportunity to look at humor in life, it usually has a pointless, useless moral that we can relate to, and it allows you to look at things in a new light and possibly expand your horizon to become a more optimistic person. ...show more content...

Many of the morals in a comedy movie can relate to us; however, it usually is a moral that is just useless facts that we don't need in our daily life. In the movie, Me, Myself, and Irene is an example of a moral that we can relate to but really don't need. In the beginning of the movie the character has found the love of his life, they get married and live a happy life until his wife finds another guy and they get divorced. At the end of the movie the main character finds another girl he really likes and was going to let her walk out of his life, until he realizes he is not going to be happy without her and stops her from leaving. The moral in the movie was that you shouldn't let a loved one go by without telling that person your feelings. We can relate to this but it wont be of value in our daily life.

Comedy movies can educate us and make us change into a different person as well. It allows us to look at things in a new light and possibly expand your horizon to become a more optimistic person. The term optimistic means a person who has a positive outlook in life. Not many comedies has this characteristic in their movies; however, one movie that does isDumb and dumber. Both the characters were stupid, so they took something a person would say and take it very literally.

Conventional Medicine Caused Me to Turn to Naturopathic Medicine

Each day doctors all over the globe prescribe people through the use of conventional medicine. Little do many of these people know that conventional medicine does not actually heal the body, but instead only treats the symptoms at the time. The alternative to this problem is naturopathic medicine. Naturopathic medicine is a better alternative because it focuses primarily on proactive measures, treats the condition and not just the symptoms, and targets the whole body. In Dr. Axe's Conventional Medicine is the Leading Cause to Death, researchers state that "Americas leading cause to death isn't heart disease or cancer:...show more content... But, these bottles were not just pill bottles; they were supplements and at the time I had no idea how much these supplements were going to impact my future. My mother had severe problems from prescription drugs that almost caused her to die, but in the end she found the better health choice with natural medicine which ultimately restored her body completely. Similarly, when I was about eight years old I had an experience as well when I began to have excruciating stomach pains. Because my mother still did not know much about holistic medicine, she did not bother to take me to a holistic doctor. Instead I saw a countless number of different conventional doctors, however we received the same answer of "We can't find anything wrong" over and over again. Finally, after months, I was told that I had ulcers in my stomach. I had a procedure done and the doctors gave me prescriptions that made the ulcers go away, however, a couple years later the problem recurred again. At this point in time, we did not want to go through the same, miserable process again, so my mother's friend reintroduced us to a holistic doctor. The doctor tested me and found that the root of the problem was bacteria in my stomach called H. Pylori. I was put on a healthy diet and two different supplements that ultimately healed not only the bacteria, but my body as a whole. It did not seem like a big deal, but this process changed my life

Using Laughter as Medicine There are thousands of medicines ranging from the modern medicines to those medicines that are not necessarily commonplace, hence the name alternative medicine. The question arises around the idea of what exactly "medicine" is. The Merriam–Webster dictionary defines medicine as "the science that deals with preventing, curing, and treating diseases". So with this vague definition what should be considered medicine? I say that laughter is definitely a medicine because of its ability to promote health in one 's body but, as any medicine, it has only certain applications that it can be used to prevent, cure, or treat an ailment. Laughter is the best medicine when used in the correct situation but, it is also great as a complementary medicine by being used alongside of other treatments. Before I begin backing up my point I would like explain how laughter has been entwined in my life and how important laughing is to our wellbeing. My grandfather, Larry Ahner, taught me from a very young age to find the humor where it was most needed. A very large majority of my early childhood memories involve something funny, whether it be ajoke or someone acting up. As a child I spent a lot of time with my pap, hunting and fishing or going camping to Lake Wallenpaupack or just getting off the school bus and staying at his house. There was never a dull moment with that old man. He always had a joke to say or a funny face to make when something happened. If a bad day
