Surf in Britain Britain has a diverse range of surf spots; from famous haunts like Fistral Beach to world class breaks off the north coast of Ireland and darn right scary big waves in the tip top of Scotland. Cornwall, Devon and South Wales boast the largest surf populations in the UK and hence, have the greatest concentration of surf schools. The fun group learning experience makes for a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to the waves, and you’ll usually get the chance to relax and mingle around a BBQ whilst the wetsuits hang up to dry. For a comprehensive guide to surf spots all around the UK – head to www.wannasurf.com

UK’s most famous surf beach is Fistral beach, Newquay. With a consistent line of waves hitting the golden sands, this is a popular location for both competition and leisure surfing. Cornwall and North Devon have plenty of quieter spots to enjoy, with some truly beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters the further south you go. 10

by Luke Bell Bude and Croyde are your best bet for consistent waves, and there are surf schools galore if you fancy taking a few lessons. Saunton Sands is a 3-mile long stretch of beach, backed by dunes looking out over the Atlantic, and is a great place for beginners. South Wales also boasts some long stretches of Atlantic facing beaches, such as Rhossili Bay on the Gower Peninsular or Newgale in Pembrokeshire.

Surf amongst wild, rugged Scottish coastlines with a handful of fellow surfers for company. The west, east and northern coastlines are peppered with surf spots too, from the picturesque St Andrews on the east to the white sands of Southport on the west and the giant breakers of Thurso up north. Take a boat-trip and experience some world class waves up in the Orkneys, or across to Northern Ireland where you can warm yourself up with a Guinness on the seafront after all that exercise. But, one bit of advice... whatever happens, don’t forget your wetsuit!

Work the summer season... Jobs can sometimes be more rewarding when they create worthwhile experiences, rather than earn you money! Check out HelpStay.com for some interesting opportunities. Also Applewood Glamping is seeking help in exchange for accommodation. Maybe live life on the road during festival season and see what tasks are available in exchange for a ticket. Networking once there can also progress your festival career. If you do want to earn some cash propping up marquees or trying your hand at some traffic management, it may lead to sports events and other fun-filled outings that may not have

otherwise caught your attention. Try some of the agencies and websites in this section for a wide range of paid positions. Hospitality roars summertime employment, particularly in our coastal towns. If you need to look the part on a budget, have a root around the many charity shops for smart black and whites – they can be bought at a fraction of the usual cost. Planning to explore the country this summer and earn your keep or some dosh? Britain still has great temporary opportunities for overseas workers with a valid visa. Get creative in your job search and find yourself something unique!

be e Spooky Tu Th by Rhiannon Thomas Think London; think transport, think the Tube. Spidering beneath the bustling city the iconic railway lines can escort you almost anywhere in and around the capital. Relishing its convenience, the Underground has been a big hit with tourists and locals alike, since opening its first train doors in 1863. Unbeknownst to many, some routes were built above burial pits stretching back from 1665 when London was ravaged by the tragic outbreak of the Black Death. So this leaves us with one question: are you really alone when you travel on the underground?

Numerous reports of ghostly sightings and ghastly goings-on have been documented. Several tube stations were used as air-raid shelters during the Second World War and tragically, in early March 1943, 173 people were killed in a crush while scrambling to enter the Bethnal Green shelter. Wailing women and children have since been heard late at night by the public and station staff... eek!

Passengers travelling north on the Bakerloo Line have also reported a ghostly reflection within the carriage window... despite the apparent lack 22

of any living travel companion. ‘White overalls man’ is another ghoul who notoriously haunts the Underground. Spotted on CCTV by Liverpool Street station staff, the spectre was glimpsed late at night waiting for a train, but when investigated by a line worker no-one was to be found... Upon returning to his colleague, he was informed the overall-ed man was stood beside him the whole time. Spooky! Covent Garden tube station also possesses a slight chill in the air. Famously the station is home to Adelphi Theatre as well as the ghost of William Terris who was said to have been killed here by fellow actor, Richard Archer Prince. Ghost spotting isn’t limited to the Tube... Spooks and scares in London are plentiful; it is said to be the world’s most haunted city. Unsurprising really with the Tower of London’s history and the London Dungeons. Tiptoe along the dungeons’ dark alleyways to uncover the truth about Jack the Ripper and Sweeny Todd, two culprits of terror from London’s murkier past. Wherever your destination, keep an eye out when you next brave the Tube alone. Is that a fellow passenger you’re accompanied by... or something otherworldly?

mouth Beachtastic Bourbyne Honor Tuttiett Bournemouth showcases a potpourri of colours intertwining throughout the town; from the people-smattered beaches to the centre’s vibrant and flourishing flowerbeds. Priding itself on transcending views of the seaside horizon, its coastal position boasts glorious golden beaches with towering, raw cliffs rising above. It’s the water sports hub of England; catch a wave whilst windsurfing or sea kayaking in the south coast sun. Fun is easily found in this beachside town, bursting with activities and a nightlife that just doesn’t quit. Innovative local artists help form a buzzing creative scene with Lucid’s fully experiential themed club nights and Halo, the club in a church pulling in an ocean of party worshippers.

Home to the first and oldest colourful beach hut in the world (1908) Bournemouth’s bustling beaches are at its heart. Make a splash with beginner surfing lessons in the big blue expanse of the English Channel. Or if you’re already pro then dive in and meet some of the biggest and baddest surfers out there. And if that’s not stirring your spirit then perhaps winding down on 24

the swanky Sandbanks is more your style. Named ‘Britain’s Palm Beach’, the sand shrouded peninsular has a rare holiday vibe for England’s south coast. Spend the day sampling our muchloved fish and chips whilst dipping your toes in the sparkling waters. The town sits in the beautifully rural region of Dorset; wind blown and tousled, its unbounded green plains make for astounding walking. Trail into either Dorset or Hampshire, two quintessentially English regions hugging each side of the town. Views of quaint towns with ancient pubs, luscious greenery and blooming hedgerows are enough to make anyone outdoorsy! Just an ‘ancient’ stone’s throw away is the great 95-mile Jurassic Coast, now a World Heritage Site due to its abundant fossils and relics of centuries ago – it’s an archaeologist’s dream! Flooded with language schools and varied job opportunities, why not anchor yourself here for the summer? Not wanting to stretch that budget? No problem as Bournemouth Backpacking Hostel has just undergone a refurb, so is primed and ready for your stay. The English seaside may have had its hey day back in the early 1900s, but it still flies a flag for fresh sea air and funky holidays, pulling many in with its tide.

Bubbling with a diverse group of community-minded people, Bristol’s melting pot fizzes with a multitude of cultures. Streets are awash with swirling colours as the city’s hills create an undulating mash of vibrant, brightly painted terraced houses. Weird and wonderful architecture continues to delight along the Harbourside, where visitors meander down its wide decks. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was the mastermind behind

Lying on the eastern slopes of Dartmoor is Moretonhampstead - a medieval hillside village, easily accessible from Exeter and Plymouth. Boasting several tea rooms, traditional pubs, a tourist information centre, and a food store, it’s an idyllic base to explore the surrounding moorland!

S parrowhawk Editor Becky and her ‘plus one’ headed out of the city for a weekend in the country! Sparrowhawk Backpackers gave them a very warm welcome.

Nestled within the village lies Sparrowhawk Backpackers - a quirky, eco-friendly abode which allows you to explore the quintessential Dartmoor countryside, offering somewhere quaint and blissful to return to after a long-day rambling. We cruised into Moretonhampstead, Sparrowhawk’s nesting ground, around midday with clear skies above. The Flag Festival presented a vibrant sight upon arrival at the village, with colourful flags hanging elegantly from the Georgian-style houses. Our walking boots were ready for use and we were eager to explore the beckoning countryside - driving through its narrow, (slightly scary!) winding roads gave us a real taste of the awaiting adventure. 26

Spotting Sparrowhawk’s yellow facade and lilac window ledges was a pleasing welcome. A pathway to the left of the hostel led us to a set of wooden gates, and beyond awaited Sparrowhawk in all its modesty and endearing charm. We were greeted by hostel owner, Alison Longely, who was quick to take us under the wing of Sparrowhawk Backpackers, and give us a guided tour. Enveloped by the bunkhouse, and Alison’s own home, is the courtyard, with blossoming vines crawling up the stone-brick walls, miniature guitars and bird houses hanging from the trees, an array of plant pots, outdoor seating – and a rather adorable, little black cat called Bella. Alison took on the project 13 years ago when Sparrowhawk (the bird of prey is an emblem of

Devon the village) was nothing more than a dilapidated stable and run-down farm house. We were amazed at the transition she had made! The stable’s hay loft was transformed into a cosy 14-bed dormitory, with wooden flooring, stone wall interior, skylights and privacy curtains, whilst the downstairs was converted into a bathroom and an airy, fully-equipped kitchen with slate flooring, wooden ceiling beams with an endearing assortment of furniture. cider. Reluctant to leave Dartmoor behind, the next day we decided to pay Fingle Bridge a visit en route home. Renowned for its 17th century stone bridge, arching over the river Teign, we were delighted to spot a riverside pub - the Fingle Bridge Inn - serving up a delicious Sunday carvery. Tucking hungrily into the mouthwatering roasties, we chatted enthusiastically about our fabulous weekend in Dartmoor. Fully fed and feeling refreshed from our thoroughly enjoyable Sparrowhawk jaunt, stepping back into city life felt almost bearable! www.sparrowhawkbackpackers.co.uk

After we offloaded our bags, we ventured into the wilderness for a five-mile round walk to North Bovey – a pleasant little village that provided a perfect resting spot for weary legs. wquay Sun-kissed Ne by Rhiannon Thomas Tans have only just faded from last year’s scorcher of a Cornish summer and already everyone’s fired up by the thought of those golden, sun drenched beaches scattered along Newquay’s coast. Swarming with over 90,000 eager surf enthusiasts, Boardmasters Festival (6th-10th August) is sure to be one of the largest events in the professional surfing calendar. Fistral, the UK’s most popular tourist beach, makes the perfect host for Boardmasters with sweeping golden sands and sapphire blue water crashing at the shore. This year’s music line-up will make waves with performances from the likes of Chase and Status, Snoop Dogg and Bastille. Brush up your surfing skills with some of Europe’s best surf schools.

Set sail aboard Sea Safari’s eco-friendly, high-speed catamaran, ‘Atlantic Explorer’ and catch a glimpse of dolphins and grey seals in their natural environment. Feeling peckish now the sun’s gone down? Newquay Meadery, a funky medieval eatery voted the top party restaurant

in Cornwall three years running, satisfies your belly whilst stepping you back into bygone times. Or for something a little lighter you can take your pick from quirky cafes, such as The Snack Shack or Truscott’s fish ‘n’ chip shop. Notorious for its nightlife, Newquay is arguably the UK’s number one summertime party destination. Drink up me hearties in Salt, Berties or The Beach, and shanty the night away in some of the town’s finest clubs. Memorable snaps and messy outfits are guaranteed after a raucous foam party or UV rave at the legendary Sailors. Blow the cobwebs away after a Moo Mooz “cowlicious” smoothie with a leisurely stroll along one of the beautiful coastal walks or cycle trails. Trenance Leisure Gardens is set by a charming lake with peddle boats, whilst the idyllic River Gannel snakes through the picturesque Cornish countryside and separates Newquay from the pretty seaside village of Crantock – just a lazy stroll away. von Stratford-upon-A by Lou Jones Step into the charmingly quaint idyll of Stratford-uponAvon and follow in the footsteps of William Shakespeare for an epic dose of literature, theatre and real ale. This Warwickshire market town in England’s heartland dates back to the medieval era, but is most recognisable for its lovingly preserved Tudor features. Shakespeare was born in a house in Henley Street in 1564. Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, his wife’s childhood home, is the most beautiful place to visit; lose yourself in acres of gardens and listen to Shakespearean sonnets in a living willow cabin. Around the High Street there are many quirky sights, quaint shops and street entertainers. Throngs of people land in high season – so escape to the nearby river Avon with its cruises, rowing and punting. The world-renowned and surprisingly cutting-edge Royal Shakespeare Theatre looms on the North Bank. £5 tickets are available for 16 to 25-year-olds if collected with proof of age. Round your evening off in one of the good quality ale houses. After all, Shakespeare enjoyed and drew inspiration from whiling his time away in darkened taverns! follow @backpax on twitter

rgh Honor Tuttiett RedRaw: Liverpool - Edinbybu Roll up, roll up, if adventure is on your bucket list! Britain’s picturesque countryside has been re-packaged into a fun-filled action zone by RedRaw (www.redraw.uk.com). Launched in 2012, this independent tour company allows the free-minded traveller to discover a surprising country through thrill-seeking escapades, with a maximum of 15 explorers.

Blackpool born and bred, founders Nick, Iain and Roper felt compelled to show off their home town with its roller-coaster buzz and fun-fuelled partying. Allured by its underground culture, Manchester was soon added to their tour resume, alongside the Lake District’s intrepid terrain. Energetic and bursting with knowledge, RedRaw knows how to kick up their heels whilst revealing the nation’s rich, historical roots. Their vision is to see the whole country crisscrossed with trails of adventure. 32

Ever expanding, RedRaw now embarks on its first three-day road trip between Liverpool and Edinburgh. First stop... gorge scrambling in the Lake District – fight your way against a constant stream of water whilst clambering the rocky path. If this doesn’t inspire you to don your Indiana Jones hat, I don’t know what will! Challenge yourself further by tackling England’s third highest mountain, Helvellyn. Be rewarded by views of sweeping landscapes and a ‘refreshing’ breeze.

Next up is Hadrian’s Wall which acted as the ‘final frontier’, dividing Scotland from England during the Roman conquest of Britain. Built after 120 AD, its traceable ruins bear witness to windswept countryside and devilish crags. After all this, sample some of Britain’s much-loved brews. Crossing the border leads you straight into a working Scotch whisky distillery for a swig of this ‘liquid gold’. Top off the RedRaw tour with an optional pub-crawl throughout the cobbled streets of picturesque Edinburgh. Raise a glass (or two) in celebration of your heroic adventure and mark the end of a mind-blowing trip.

Roman roots hold the key to Newcastle’s name as a ‘new castle’ was built in 1080 to defend the dazzlingly iconic Tyne Bridge. But its soul still rests in the rich manufacturing history that moulded the city. Leaders in shipbuilding, coal mining and a premier league football team, the Geordies have a lot to be proud of without mentioning its thriving nightlife.

! Albatross Backpackers In Our rather magnificent Mike was dispatched for a Newcastle jaunt, with a challenge to squeeze in lots of sights during his two day stay at the Albatross!

I landed in Newcastle at 8am. Frazzled after a series of micro-naps on the flight over, I sleepwalked to the airport’s Metro station. Sixty stations scattered around the Tyne and Wear provide a low-cost and stress-free mode of transport. Located in Grainger Street, Albatross Backpackers In! is just a couple of minutes away from Central Station. My Geordie odyssey kicked off in style. The Albatross itself is 150 years old, and was once a bank – ironic considering it’s now home to clientèle on a budget! Stacey, who was working at the 24-hour reception, gave me an introduction to the hostel. Newcastle on a Friday night, she warned me, is not for the faint hearted. But the hostel ensures that single travellers do not share rooms with stag dos. Clambering the stairs to my room, the 34

high ceilings echoed the elegance of a bygone era, whilst the décor matched its guests – young and fresh. My room had six bunk-beds, oak flooring and a light and airy feel. Just past the reception is a lounge area with free Wi-Fi and an abundance of colourful and comfy seating, backdropped by vibrant graffiti adorning the walls. And the kitchen has more than ample white goods. Down a flight of stairs, nestled secretly in the building’s vaults, a space akin to an old English pub offers yet more seating and a pool table. An outdoor enclosed seating and smoking area is an ideal gathering spot. When not out relishing Newcastle’s buoyant nightlife, there’s also DVD hire. With the internal compass of a headless chicken, I navigated my

- Newcastle way to the Central Arcade - a graceful Edwardian shopping complex built in 1906. Gathering leaflets from the tourist information centre, I figured out the best way to travel to Richard Gormley’s Angel of the North. An initial warm welcoming in the statues 54-metre wingspan felt apt. I sat on a nearby bench for a while, meditating on this huge and graceful sculpture.

too many captivating curiosities. The city and the north east surroundings are steeped in history, artistic ingenuity, culture and of course Newcastle’s renowned, vibrant nightlife – it has to be seen to be believed. The Albatross Backpackers In! made a perfect re-charging point. Visit albatrossnewcastle.com for more info about the hostel.

Back in the city, I strolled along the river Tyne to marvel at the ingenious bridges which stitch together Newcastle and Gateshead. At dusk I ambled to the Dog and Parrot, an indie and rock bar on Clayton Street, where music accompanied a range of well-priced ales, ciders, and lagers. Newcastle’s waterfront is a serene escape from the city centre’s fizzing nightlife, made more beautiful by the shimmering arch of reflected lights, beaconing from Gateshead Millennium Bridge. ory Manchester’sbygl Lou Jones Bursting with a legendary music culture, savvy Manchester continues to forge its image as the UK’s most electric hotspot outside of London. Lying closely to Lancashire’s breezy Penine Moors, the unofficial capital of the north has quick connections to Liverpool, Sheffield and Leeds. Exploding out of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester became a major manufacturing force towards the end of the 18th century, with close-knit communities forming around its cotton mills and textile industries. The city’s economy then shuddered to an abrupt halt in the post-war years. While Manchester’s identity was in limbo in the late 70s and early 80s, bands like Joy Division and The Smiths gave it an unusual bleak glamour, until the house mash-ups of the “Madchester” scene resprayed its image with a vibrant energy that continues to burn. With much of the nation’s media migrating to Salford Quays and cash investments flowing from modern industry, the old industrial spaces of the city centre have been reclaimed for

36

funkier uses than churning out knickers. Lose yourself down the Northern Quarter’s backstreets for a fuller flavour of how the city’s creatives work and play. Check out its DJ and live music bars including Dry bar (the original indie hangout), and Night and Day café on Oldham Street. Eclectic indoor market Afflecks and independent record shops provide plenty of scope for rummaging. Although grey skies can be a familiar backdrop to the Manchester experience, the city takes on a different persona along Canal Street – especially when the sun shines. The Gay Village exudes continental chic by day and high-energy glitz by night. Ambling between the spruced-up warehouses and waterways of Castlefield reveals more layers of the city’s history, with Roman ruins and the free Museum of Science and Industry. While cheap eats and vibrant theatre productions are part of Oxford Road’s allure, once you’re in this student nook surrender to the rhythmic embrace of Big Hands bar – where anything from reggae to northern soul is played before or after gigs at the Academy. Former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown said Manchester had everything except a beach. Once immersed in the city’s pulsating pace, you won’t rush to swap its Lancashire cobbles for seaside pebbles.

rtmeirion : Little Italy Po Nestled in the northern reaches of Despite the striking Italian Gwynedd lays Portmeirion, a small coastal village unlike anywhere else in Britain. On first glance you’d think you’ve stepped into the rural havens of Italy’s highlands – a curious blend of classical sculpture, cobbled streets and vivid pastel-coloured housing complete with sweeping spires characterises this Welsh retreat. Combining architect Sir Clough’s environmental philosophies with a passion for radical art and design, Portmeirion is at heart a business venture – a hotel complex opened in 1926 providing a fairytale escape for inspirational writers. Composed of cottages and villas, the hotel is still very much open for business. However, for us budgeters, just a day trip is affordable with access granted via a small admission fee.

influence, Portmeirion is very much Welsh at heart – only Welsh cakes are to be found here amongst its bustling tearooms. Located on the River Dywryd’s estuary, the village provides an opportunity for strolls through scenic routes rich in wildlife. Annual event ‘Portmeiricon’ sees Portmeirion transform back into ‘The Village’, the setting for cult 60s TV show The Prisoner. Expect to find games of ‘human chess’ alongside screening events and dance. Or for the wild at heart, Festival No.6 arrives early September, a music festival that attracts well over 14,000 party goers. Once swept up in the Italian romance of this Welsh hotspot, you’ll wonder why the TV’s ‘prisoner’ ever wanted to escape!

Snowdonia's Magic The name might conjure imagery of snowy peaks and harsh winters, but exploring Snowdonia is a multiseasonal experience. The spell of this majestic mountain range has besotted all who fall before it; 20th century poet R.S Thomas wrote that people come to these mountains ‘for a lost Eden, a lost childhood, for fulfillment, for escape, for adventure’. As summer melts the thick blanket of snow to reveal the underlying hills of green, it brings

with it the opportunity to explore every contour and crevice. Activities such as mountain biking, orienteering and kayaking draw in some 100,000 visitors every year. Mount Snowdon remains the crown jewel and commands stunning views atop its peak over 1000m above sea level. Mull over magnificent ‘mountain top’ views of the impressive and ever meditative Snowdonia National Park!

It’s a Hard Rock life… Castle Rock, that is. A wise man once said “A man’s house is his castle”. The uninformed say this was a proverbial expression of personal privacy and security. Granted, subtlety was never my strong suit but I think I know the truth. What he was saying is that most of us, tragically, are far too common to live in an actual castle. So if you’re in Scotland and look past this former hospital/asylum/ school at the foot of Edinburgh Castle then you’ve probably got rocks in your head. Like many Australians, I arrived at Heathrow Airport bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with dreams of adventure and prosperity in the mother country. The reality hit 44

me hard and fast – terrible coffee, the lowest pay I’ve had since I was fifteen, spending about $30,000 a week on tube tickets and rent so ridiculous I feel like the Queen should be coming to my garden parties. To prevent my head from exploding, I took a weekend off from doing nothing (and somehow still leaking money) to check out sunny old Scotland. That was when I first met her – kooky, loving and appropriately hygienic. We spent our first night together bonding silently over the ragged, baritone vocals of Bruce Springsteen in the record room. We explored each other, and I discovered places I didn’t know existed. Like the Magical Unicorn Room. I left her behind as I went on the self-proclaimed ‘greatest pub crawl on earth’, and returned so madly in love I had to have a cold

Edinburgh shower. But Castle Rock doesn’t do cold showers, hot water 24/7 baby. If Michael J Fox jumped out of a DeLorean six months ago and told me I’d one day be living in a hostel and sharing a room with 9 other guys I’d firstly question his mental integrity, then probably reassess my own sexuality. Now having lived here for over six months, I feel like a veil of ignorance has been lifted from my eyes. Everyone is in the same boat you are. People are generally super respectful of possessions and personal space, and you can always find a partner in crime if you feel like getting up to mischief.

I’ve experienced in life so far, and a lot of my greatest memories seemed positively mundane while they were happening. It’s not until after you leave, and look back with rose coloured glasses do you truly appreciate just how much fun you were having. The people, the price and the bohemian attitude is why I stay here. And I think it’s why so many people keep coming back. For more information, visit www.scotlandstophostels.com

Travelling isn’t just about the places you see, but the folk you meet as well. When I tell people I’ve been living in a hostel for six months, a lot of the time they’re shocked. Legendary Loch Ne ss In the highlands of Scotland you will find the Great Glen, one of the world’s great wildernesses. There are four Lochs here with Loch Ness being the most famous. This dark body of water hides the Loch Ness Monster and a visit around the shores is sure to set the spine tingling. The monster is speculated to be a survivor of a long line of Plesiosaurs, lurking in the depths of Loch Ness, awaiting its next meal. As far back as the 6th century, St Columba is reported to have restrained it from devouring one of his followers. Modern sightings have been recorded since 1933 with one tourist reporting how he saw a prehistoric animal crossing the road with a dead animal in its mouth. The first photograph of the Monster was so convincing that the Secretary of State for

Scotland ordered it not to be attacked. A recent photograph taken by a couple who stopped by the Loch on a romantic night out shows a monster-like being in the water – a memorable date then? Feeling brave? Then visit the shores and wait in the misty air to see Nessie. And when you’ve had enough of monsters, retreat to the ruins of Urquhart Castle, the scene of countless bloody battles. Visitors are welcome all year round and a climb to the top of the five story towerHouse is rewarding. We can’t promise that you will see Nessie, but you won’t forget the views.

elona Cool & Hip : Barc by Rhiannon Thomas If you have a penchant for chic cities, then look no further than Barcelona – the capital of the Catalonian community. Scattered with spectacular sights such as the iconic La Sagrada Familia, the city views are certainly breathtaking. Fantasia-like spirals and religious motifs adorn the cathedral in the modernist style of the great Antoni Gaudi himself. Another notch on Barcelona’s skyline is the eye-catching Torre Agbar. The 38story skyscraper is particularly beautiful at dusk, towering over the city’s kitsch flea-markets.

Flip an abstract coin... heads for Picasso, tails for Dali! The Picasso Museum dons over 3,500 pieces from the melancholic Blue Period to the abstract Synthetic Cubism works for which he is distinguished. The Dali exhibition

at the Real Círculo Artístico is great for the Salvador Dali enthusiasts with over 700 paintings, sculptures and photographs on show. Culinary connoisseurs listen up; the quirky Dans le Noir is a treat for all the senses. Eat without your eyes in the pitch black ‘Dark Room’ whilst being waited on attentively by the blind restaurant guides. For a truly Catalonian experience the ever-thriving bohemian district of Gràcia bustles with cosy cafes and tapas bars. Topping up your tan is easy with beaches galore. Barceloneta beach is the nearest and understandably most lively. After soaking up the glorious Catalonian rays, linger by the coast to dip your toe in some beachside partying. Icebarcelona and the famous Shôko nightclub are just two of the trendy hotspots right by the golden sands. Whatever your interest, the coolest city in the world won’t disappoint. Switzerland, a country that from all angles is fit for a postcard, from the natural awe of the Alps, to the hustle and bustle of modern, multicultural metropolis, its enough to turn any visitor green with envy. Throw some clothes into your backpack and hotfoot your way to the mountains!

www.Swiss Hostels

Charlie Burns was curious to discover whether exploring Switzerland on a budget was plausible. His answer lay within the Swiss Hostels’ website!

You’ll be pleased to hear that travelling Switzerland doesn’t have to be a bank breaker. Swisshostels.com offers homely accommodation in prime spots around the country for traveller friendly rates. Boasting the second highest standard of living in the world, and a central node of a sprawling train network, many choose to start their Swiss travels in Zurich. A cradle of cultural sophistication (the city is renowned for its love of opera and ballet), the city offers 80 clubs and 500 bars, all within eye-shot of hostels such as the Hotel Biber and the Langsstars located in the lively old part of town. Known as the ‘portal to the Alps’, Zurich is a stone’s throw from the equally alluring Swiss Alps. Blooming with cultures and traditions nurtured 56

from local customs that have existed for a millennia, the Alpines are an integral part of the Swiss experience. Few things are so important to the Swiss as music, so don’t be surprised to hear a yodel or two floating along the breeze and over the mountains. Set in the heart of it all is Chalet des Alpes in the Wassen region. Full of character, the hostel is over 100-years-old and offers a clean, cosy atmosphere, alongside a 5* bathroom in the basement – very appealing after a long day’s hike! For those picturing snow-capped mountains, rolling greens and shimmering crystal lakes, the bordering region Lucerne delivers in buckets. Majestic Mount Pilatus and ‘Queen of the Mountains’ Rigi, offering views of nearly half the country on a clear day, entice summer hikers and winter skiers alike. Feast

on a rich breakfast included in a stay at the Jugendherberge Hospental (a backpacker-hotel & pub in Schwyz) and fuel a vigorous hike through the mountainous Schwyzer Panorama trail. Or take to the hills on a mountain bike; the area is home to a number of routes that twist and turn through ravines and lakes that the Alps are so renowned for.

Where better to round off your trip than the capital city, Bern, historically rich and bursting with indulgences. Reputable for some of the best food in the country combing French, Italian and German influences, Bern is also renowned for its mouth-watering chocolate. Enough reason to visit this fine country alone.

Quintessentially Swiss in style and spirit, the lake towns of Murten and Biel which lay further west in the Jura region, appear lifted straight from a fairytale, with original city walls and spires dating from the 12th century. Thrill seekers rejoice, Lago Lodge in Biel offers the perfect base for those willing to try their hand at one of the numerous different outdoor sports, offering unbeatable views of the rolling greens, gorges and winding mountain streams. Or for those that would rather stay firmly on ground level, the lakes are hotspots for activity, including the Three-Lakes Tour and a variety of water sports. read full reviews at www.backpaxmag.com

nna Rhiannon Thomas Waltz your way to Vbyie Five weeks each summer sees the beautiful city of Vienna jam-packed with contemporary performances, research projects and dance workshops, all brought to you by the ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival (17th July – 17th Aug). Started by Karl Regensburger in 1984, the festival was originally set up to give contemporary dance a voice in Austria. With a mountain of sights to see, Vienna’s a toe-tapping town over the summer months. Intoxicating aromas of spices waft from the Naschmarkt, open daily, with enough fresh fruits and vegetables to inspire the culinary genius in all of us. The Naschmarkt Deli is a cool cafe with satisfying food, tasty drinks and live DJs playing during the weekend. Spend an evening by the Danube canal and enjoy a beer or cocktail from one of the vending stands nearby. If you feel like carrying on the party, hit Flex, a canal-side haunt named one of the best electronic clubs in Europe. A few dance steps along the water will bring you to

Praterdome, Vienna’s largest nightclub – squeeze out your last drop of energy with the hip swaying crowds. With baroque and rococo architecture, civil reform and a classical music revolution, the 18th century marked a golden age for Vienna. A five minute walk from the KettenbrĂźckengasse metro station you’ll find the trendy area of MargaretenstraĂ&#x;e, one of the coolest streets in Vienna – dotted with lots of indie stores, cute cafes and bars. Peoplewatch from one of the many Viennese coffee houses, whilst lazily enjoying a cup of traditional Austrian coffee. To satisfy your intellectual and social appetites, explore the Museum Quarter, home of the Museum of Modern Art and the Wiener Festwochen, one of the world’s leading cultural festivals. So why not waltz your way over to vibrant Vienna for a summertime extravaganza?
