Winter Hot Spots: Top 5 Kiruna Snow Festival, Lapland: Auroras glow and snowmobiles jump, temperatures lower and spirits rise, bands play and nightclubs beat. Wrap up for weirdness at reindeer racing, become winter’s strongest in the Mr Snowman competition, and snuggle up in an impossibly icy ‘ice hotel’ – all found at Kiruna Snow Festival in late January, a cool 160km north of the Arctic Circle. Winterberg, Germany: Blasted by snow-cannon and flood-lit until 10pm, neither temperature nor time can stop skiing antics. Enthusiasts take to chair-lifts in their hoards for seasonal weekend rushes. Famous for its bobsleigh run, this landmark has hosted several world championships, and with skeleton sleds reaching up to 140kph the relatively low altitudes never mean low speeds. Air and Style Festival, Innsbruck, Austria: Vibrant, young and extreme – cold sports and hot tunes come together for Europe’s biggest and most extravagant event. Major brands bring major bucks, so February snowboarders follow the money, strap on their boots and face-off for an awesome €75,000 prize. Models, parties, cocktails, fashion and skills? Christmas comes late in Austria. Cairngorm, Scotland: Intense as any Alpine adventure, Scotland’s most popular winter resort puts you at the mercy of the tempestuous sky. Rampaging teams of snow dogs take to the hills, while outbound charity Disability Snowsport offers lessons and access to all topography tacklers. Funicular trains allow more casual adventurers to enjoy magisterial views without breaking a sweat. Interlaken, Switzerland: Crazy canyon jumping, speedy slope gliding, insane inner-tubing. Test your agility on their unique ‘balancers’, give in to gravity on a giant snow-tube, drop onto shining pistes from a helicopter and test your nerve at the canyon jump. Snowshoe hikes, indoor curling and cross-country skiing will keep you toasty. Fall, slide, walk or play and romance in this frosty paradise. www.backpaxmag.com

Jobs over the chilly months These frostier months are no reason to recoil to indoor comforts – there’s plenty to get hip and active with outdoors. Need to raise extra pennies for wintertide festivities? Wish to give something back to your mostloved British town? Pull your sturdy winter socks on and get involved! From on-the-hoof to 3-6 month jobs, there’s an alternative way to appreciate Britain’s nippy months. Be a care worker in a home or coworker at a community camp for the disabled and mentally challenged. Get your creative on with fun, artistic activities and assist on trips to nevertourist-trodden corners. Good for

the soul and perfect chance to meet other liked-minded helpers. If resolutely residing among city lights, become an events promoter. From food outlets to night clubs, flounce those feet on the pavement: with exclusive vouchers and event entries for yourself. For those with a license behind the wheel, and perhaps a long childhood dream to drive a JCB, British farms are still flourishing during these cooler months, needing an extra pair of gloves. After a well-deserved wintertide concoction to greet the end of your working day, there’s no need for such a thing as chilly winter blues!

the festive season... No ‘bah humbug’ for us! Gauri Kangai puts us in the festie mood with a mix of nationwide events to celebrate festive season in style. Stretching from Land’s End to the Shetlands like a long Santa stocking, villages and cities alike are awash with exciting Christmas and New Year celebrations. Among them are some charmingly unusual scenes – even London will surprise with its tucked away festive treats. Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel), a quaint former fishing village on Cornwall’s furthest edge, is a stocking toe that takes centre stage come December. Magically illuminating the harbour, Christmas lights display a 3D fantasy scene on the sparkling waters. For all its local jolliness and carol singing, the switch-on is a must-see. Mousehole has a historical allure too. Legend says a brave local fisherman once battled the Celtic Sea storms to capture enough fish for the village Christmas dinner. Ever since, the night before Christmas Eve sees the harbourside’s Ship Inn treat guests with the traditional Stargazey fish pie! Icy lit-up waters transform

to a frosty blanketed scene, with nearby Truro letting your stiff winter legs loosen. Come for open air ice-skating (20th November – 5th January) under the watchful eye of its cathedral, and tune your ear to a fine brass band. If clinging to the promise of a ‘Big City’ festive season, flock to the stocking’s heel where London’s party scene is as extensive as the underground tube network! Just like its public transport, festivity here is pretty much 24-7 and begins early. Kick start the season on the 7th December by challenging London’s crisp, cold air and taking the ‘Plum Pudding Plunge’ at Parliament Hill Lido pool. Fresh mince pies and a hot tub after will heaven-drop those goosebumps! Dry off by watching the Great Christmas Pudding Race in Covent Garden’s Piazza, a fun charitable tradition well steamed for 30 years. Indulge in mulled wine and live music at Spitalfields’ Winter Festival in the eccentric East End (6th – 16th December. Artists, local and global, share the stage – contemporary music stands shoulder-to-shoulder with more classic styles such as opera. Shoreditch enchants with a free

Xmas & New Year ‘Christmas Past’ exhibition at the Geffrye Museum (26th November – 5th January): step yourself into a time capsule and witness 400 years of England’s changing Christmas traditions. Approaching the heart of London’s merry hype comes a glitter of markets. Hyde Park blazons a populated Winter Wonderland funfair (22nd November - 5th January), and Southbank sports its German-esque Christmas Markets (16th November - 24th December). Backdropped by London’s Eye, the Real Food Market (14-16th and 20-23rd December) boasts a jolly assortment of bites, locally sourced and made. For London’s New Year fireworks, the entire city offers top-notch viewing. Cling onto the bustling Embankment with thousands of friendly revellers. Or settle atop Primrose Hill for an evening picnic – perch at its peak for a panoramic view of the London skyline and watch the ‘Cirque du Soleil’ style drama unfold as the fireworks

2013 explode along the Thames. Prime spots await early birds! If the scent of fresh pine-leaves beckons you north to the stocking’s white fluffy cuff, New Year is a time when Edinburgh explodes and Glasgow glows.

Hogmanay Festival is Scotland’s national New Year party – with a global guest list! Buzzing with live music, dancing in the streets, fireworks in the sky, and even an ‘ancient pagal’ Torchlight Procession (30th December) – Hogmanay cannot hold-you-away! From top to toe, Britain’s festive stocking is bulging with merry delights. Finish 2013 in ‘velvet’ style and let 2014 start with a boom!

The Tower Zoo The Tower of London was used as a prison for over 800 years. This impenetrable fortress can conjure up gruesome images of headless Anne Boleyn and doomed Guy Fawkes. But who knew that among these hapless folk dwelled a host of very different prisoners? Lions, leopards, monkeys and even a polar bear once inhabited these walls. Yes, the Tower of London was Britain’s first ever Zoo as these furry friends, gifted to the monarchy from far and wide, all 22

needed a secure London habitat. The bizarre collection expanded thanks to zoo keeper Alfred Cops, who in 1821 added a wealth of animals including alligators, kangaroos, zebras and bears. In 1831 the Tower was overrun and the decision was made to transfer the animals to zoos across the country, much to the relief of the locals. They had been subjected to a few attacks. It sheds a whole new slant on ‘nightmare neighbours’!

Union Chapel (Islington): Majestically standing tall, this old church – now a music hall – is where fantastic acoustics echo talent, projecting their soulful voices to the heavens. This 1877 ‘Grade 2’ listed building is a historical land mark in itself. Melodies magically mix with the awe inspiring ornate surrounds. www.unionchapel.org.uk Buffalo Bar (Islington): An edgy underground scene bursts with diverse ‘cool crowd’ types, celebrating both live music and club nights. From punk to garage to acoustics – drink and dance the night away. Situated next door to the Highbury & Islington tube station you can easily step from one underground world to another. www.buffalobar.co.uk Green Note (Camden): Organic, fresh and vibrant, this popular venue hosts performances from blues, folk, bluegrass and world music! Tranquil and beautiful tunes make the ideal side-dish to those tasty organic dishes and drinks bestowed upon you. This breathtaking infusion of genius never disappoints. www.greennote.co.uk Ronnie Scott’s (Soho): Doors opened to an inspiring jazz community back in 1959, with an old school Chicago themed vibe of drinking and slow paced rhythms. Renowned for a thriving jazz scene, music sways louder as you draw nearer, as if notes are climbing imaginary steps into your pulsating ear drums. www.ronniescotts.co.uk The Grand (Clapham): The Grand is a colossal music hall with exceptional acoustics but also acts as a nightclub so, following a gig, ravers can dance until dawn breaks. The Kinks, Jamiroquai even modern greats like Chipmunk have graced this stage – satisfying all tastes. Bingo nights even pull an abundant audience! www.claphamgrand.com 24

Diwali: The Festival of Light Autumn days bring darker ink-blotted evenings, but on 27th October, the light comes forth. Anciently renowned Hindu festival of lights, ‘Diwali’ (pronounced ‘Dee-var-lee’), comes to celebrate with its London Hindu counterparts and any culturalenthusiasts alike. Candles-galore, Diwali is mythically a symbol of bowing to the heavens for health, wisdom, peace and prosperity. Once again, ‘Diwali in London 2013’ charms the Big Smoke’s community with fountains glowing and Nelson’s lions lit-up. Trafalgar Square is set for quintessential British history to be cherry-dipped in exotic Indian culture. Whether for spiritual interest or purely along for the party – everyone is invited to London’s magical Diwali. A jolly weekend jubilation, takes centre ‘square’ and be entertained by performances of every twirl.

From traditional jingle dances to fun Bollywood, live Punjab rock to Bengal ‘belly dancing’, and the very best of London’s Indian pop divas. When you’re not jingling along, waltz round the stalls for an authentic curry, hand-held dosa or some exquisite sweet treats. Lamps and lights blazing through dusk, a ceremonial ‘aarti’ event brandishes flames around the deities ensuring elephant Ganesha outshines the lions. Up on the platform, Indian folk meets English indie for a merry finale. And did we mention all this is free? Come plunge in the fun festivity... tonight, you’re an exotic goddess and mirthful prince!

The New Forest

Remarkable as well as historically rich, the New Forest is one of the South’s most prized possessions. Covering approximately 570 square kilometres, its landscape spans the breadth and width of Hampshire and Wiltshire, slightly infringing on the Dorset county. Emblazoned with golden tones, this National Park comes alive during autumn – canvas-like and warm, trees provide a beautiful awning to visitors strolling below. Come winter, bare trees furnish the frosty ground – woolly jumpers and hats are a must as you enjoy the icy grass crunching beneath your feet. Log-fires are never too far away with

country pubs scattered along the winding roads. Quaint towns and villages lace the forest, as well as breathtaking beaches – ideal for wintry strolls along the sand. A glimpse of wildlife is always guaranteed, with horses and ponies rambling nonchalantly, and deer may be spotted if you’re lucky. Originally created as a ‘royal forest’ in 1079, this sweeping landscape can be accessed easily. Vein-like cycle routes and pathways meander throughout the forest, creating the ultimate paradise for walkers and cyclists alike!

The ABC of Alternative Brighton Hunting the alternative in Brighton is virtually an oxymoron. An underground art, gay and music scene dominates and distinguishes this city. Its ever-changing crowd of day-trippers have sought refuge from the unending drudge of reality since the 1800s. Pebbled beaches once speckled with the parasols of white-laced Victorians, now glitter with Shoreditch’s sharpest dressed youth. Sea-gnarled fishermen have long been pried from its piers, replaced with a hermit of artists 28

sheltering in the shells of its archways. Outlandishly eco, Brighton does environmental its own way, a 30 acre Llama park combines sustainability with eccentricity. An equivalent ethos pulses through the veins of The Laines – Brighton’s off-beat shopping district which prides its pre-loved, and values anything ‘Vintage and Fabulous’. A city ruled by the mafia of bead-boutiques and delectable delis, it is the definitive of unconventional escapism.

Small treasures could be found in all directions once I’d left Falmouth Town station. Gyllyngvase Beach, with its rich blue waters, seemed to have been donated from the Mediterranean. Welcomed by the open arms of a palm tree, the town’s colourful centre bursts with trinket stores, cafes and an array of competing fish and chip shops lining its natural harbour – like an English toy box of tantalising treats.

Falmouth Lodge – For this issue we decided to send magnificent Mike for some sea air by the Cornish coast. Falmouth Backpackers made him feel right at home... Equidistant at a five minute walk from both the town centre and Gyllyngvase Beach, I arrived through a peaceful suburb to the front door of Falmouth Lodge Backpackers. I was greeted by Judi, the owner, and after dropping off my bag and inhaling the warm atmosphere, I immediately realised I had entered not just a hostel, but a home. Judi had taken ownership of the lodge after returning with her family from Grenada in the West Indies, where they had previously lived. Subtle decorative flourishes: colourful throws, wall hangings patterned with fish and exotic birds in both the bedrooms and common areas, 30

all seemed like remnants of their past. The décor, along with light, airy rooms, gave the lodge a feeling of calmness. Judi confirmed that this was a retreat for people of all ages. After a short coastal walk, I spent my evening quietly unwinding in the common room. The lodge comprises of dorms with bunk beds and rooms with an en-suite. As well as a large kitchen complete with Aga cooker, there’s also a shared common area with a tv, WiFi, a collection of books, DVDs, and plenty of leaflets and maps to aid your exploring. Judi also provides guests with free tea and coffee, and a continental breakfast in the morning.

Falmouth is ideal for those wanting to escape the conventional night out filled with chain bars. Instead the town welcomes lovers of craft beer,

live music, and cosy independent pubs. The Poly is an independent arts centre steeped in history, and its cinema shows a diverse range of independent films. There are no shortages of places to fill your belly too. I tucked into a cooked breakfast from Fuel, a stylish lounge bar and café, and enjoyed the tradition of eating chips by the sea for lunch.

chance to gawp at the town from a new perspective. I arrived panting like a Labrador at the entrance to the castle – built in 1539; welcomed by the sound of a medieval fanfare. Falmouth is a traditional seaside town with modern embellishments: trendy cafes, art galleries, museums, and good transport links. Falmouth Lodge Backpackers provided a perfect base to plan my adventures, and in terms of comfort and affordability, look no further when visiting this historically rich town. www.falmouthbackpackers.co.uk

The following day, I explored some more of Falmouth’s coastline. From Gyllyngvase Beach I walked along Cliff Road, passing two beaches towards the stone ogre of Pendennis Castle, sitting on top of a promontory, once carefully guarding Falmouth from attack. My gradual ascent towards the castle awarded me with views of the coastline, and the read more articles at www.backpaxmag.com

Battle of the Moors Framing Devon, two enigmatic refuges of forgotten times lie undisturbed, shrouded in mist and folklore – Exmoor above and Dartmoor below. Dominated by lush expanses of hills and moorland, rich in heritage and tradition, these national parks are famed for a diversity of wildlife, flora and fauna as unique as the landscape. With less than 50 miles of separation, let the battle of the moors commence... In the northern corner... Exmoor! Invigorating coastlines, a contrast of dizzying cliffs and sheltered sandy coves line traditional port towns. Discover Kilve Beach, in Minehead, once used by smugglers to stash barrels of rum – still littered with the remains of fossils and ammonites from the Jurassic era. Fill your lungs with sea air along the 630 mile South West Coastal Path, your eyes with the stimulating scenery and your belly with the sumptuous crumpets and cream teas. Follow the river inland where Exmoor’s rolling hills, cut with woodlands and farmlands, are home to vibrant wildlife. Exmoor’s iconic red deer date back to prehistoric times and make strong subject matter for ambitious photographers. 32

In the southern corner.... Dartmoor! Historic caves, mysterious tors and unconquered bogs – its untameable landscape radiates a mystical atmosphere. Unsurprisingly Dartmoor has inspired books such as The Hound of the Baskervilles and features as the backdrop to Steven Spielberg’s film War Horse. These 954 square kilometres home an array of wildlife and rare birds adorn their surroundings, with scattered flashes of the vibrant Blue Ground Beetle and the flittering of the Greater Horseshoe Bat. With peaty rivers running through green shaded woodland, Dartmoor boasts idyllic locations for wild swimming. For those with a more dare-devilish nature, gorge scrabbling has scaled in popularity – battle your way up waterfalls and ravines guided by the helping hands of one of the available tour companies.

Pearls of Penzance Out west, where the wind blows tall, Penzance, the ‘Holy Headland’ of Cornwall stands stoically against the rough Atlantic Ocean. Imagine rows of Cornish cottages facing cobbled sea walks, this carefully conserved town blooms with secret gardens tangled in the tattered remains of fishermen’s nets and sea-weathered lobster pots. Natural beauty provides the perfect conditions to grow Penzance’s uniquely autonomous arts scene, which has enjoyed a recent boom. Art-addicts are awash with inspiration, daubed with galleries, cafes and residencies in an array of boutique hotels.

Venture to the Minack Theatre, carved right into the headland cliffs, where accomplished actors brave everything the elements and audience can throw at them. Racing out across the sea lies St Michael’s mount – both an abbey of archangels and mighty fortress guard this rocky isle. Its ancient causeway is only revealed at low-tide, allowing a hasty foot passage to only the brave. Not just Lands End, pirates and pasties, this Cornishly coven has far more than initially meets the eye.

The Lake District Rising from a poet’s page, the Lake District and its mountains fill the sky. Captured by our most famous writers this scenery is open to all, as Wordsworth said – all you need is an eye to perceive and a heart to enjoy. Take this national park at your own pace: scrambling to the top of the highest peaks, running the ankle-twisting routes or bravely dipping into Windermere, England’s largest lake. The fells, an old Norse word for mountains, were made famous in the last century by Alfred Wainwright, whose passion was walking their contours and finding the most pleasurable routes for people to follow. Scafell Pike reaches a heavenly 978 metres into the sky, and seen in the sun beyond a sparkling lake who could resist the urge to climb it? Part of the Three Peaks Challenge along with Ben

Nevis and Snowdon, this mountain entices both the energetic climber and average day-tripper. Views from the top are an infinity of silver hills, their broken rocks “sharp enough for shaving”, in the words of Wainwright. Neighbouring peaks each offer their own unique perspective – panoramas that stretch out to sea or mountains, huddling in to make a secret world of stone. With a wealth of organisations offering training in outbound sports, and over 1700 listed structures hidden in tiny villages, the Lake District entertains thrill-seekers and intellectuals alike. Farther afield, Corby Castle is famous for historic cascading waterfalls, or head up to Carlisle to answer the call of the city. But who could walk away when the words of romantics whisper through valleys, and a dream of vales and hills seems so suddenly real.

Operating in North West England, RedRaw tours are passionate about providing backpackers with a truly unique and memorable experience. Recently founded in 2012 by a group of friends, RedRaw prides itself on staff who are well-travelled, downto-earth and huge amounts of fun! With the Blackpool Illuminations gracing the town between September and November, hoards of people – both near and far – will be flocking to the streets to admire the dazzling lights, which have given the town its allure since 1879. Manchester Madness Echoes of past industries whistle down the alleyways as the tuning of a guitar drowns out the ever-present squawk of an overhead seagull. This is the Manchester we know and love, from Fred Dibnah to Factory Records, Liam Gallagher to L.S. Lowry – it’s windswept with an image of nonchalance so deeply embedded within modern British culture. A trendy almost hippy vibe now kisses the cheeks of the Northern Quarter, all with a gloss of NYC mystique. It’s perhaps difficult to distinguish where Manchester crafted the image of chic and cool or the colourful ‘Madchester’ title that it is commonly called, but traditional local pubs are as rife as nightclubs. 40

Sitting washed up on the shores of the Manchester Ship Canal are museums such as The Lowry (whose Mancunian namesake is one of Britain’s most celebrated artists), The Imperial War Museum and The National Football Museum. Accompanying these tourist hot spots are architectural buildings such as the Victoria Baths or the localised Stockport Air Raid Shelters. Culture and history are positively bursting from this proud city’s seams. Manchester is both cool and gritty, with beanie hats and flat caps being fine examples of that multiculturalism Northern Britain has to offer!

Conwy’s Hidden Wonders Snowdonia’s mighty mountains stamp an impressive statement on the wilderness vista of Wales, whilst pocketed away on the country’s very northern tip you can stumble across Conwy – a hidden treasure town. This endearing town is enchanted by surrounding luscious countryside – not least the enigmatic Snowdonia skyline, enjoyable for hikes. Sloping down into an expansive breadth of estuary is Conwy Quay: a bustling harbour donned with boats, elegant in their float. Adopt yourself into the village and be welcomed

with a ‘medieval meets modern day’ seaside atmosphere. Feel the fresh bluster of salty sea air and enjoy an earful of authentic Welsh language down at the Malt Loaf pub. Assuredly looking on is Conwy Castle, sat like a queen. Its thirteenth century architecture is surprisingly intact and the creaking doors are open to any explorer. Nestled within this ancient ‘walled market town’ is Great Britain’s smallest house. Precisely 3.05 metres high and 1.8 metres across, this ornate fully roomed house is more than just a fantasy home… it was once inhabited for 300 years. In fact, one owner of the house was 6ft 3! Chester, Liverpool and Manchester are all an arm’s length away. After Conwy’s hidden wonders, Wales may just tantalise you further with countless untold delicacies.

The Gower Peninsular Witness, in peaceful isolation, the serene beauty of The Gower Peninsula. Golden dunes seep into blissful beaches, waves crash into ancient rocks and piercing blue skies cap rising cliffs, framing the coastal oasis. Though notorious as a summer sanctuary the Gower’s magnificence retains its reign in later months. As the excited shouts of children building sandcastles and splashing

in rock pools fade behind us, bask in the tranquillity of wild shoreline. Gusts of sea breeze ruffle tufts of grass and scatters sand. Feel wet sand squish between your toes and wander through rocky coastal paths – air hot in your lungs as you climb cliff tops for a fleeting glimpse of the setting sun. The landscape illuminated with one final glow before melting into endless ocean.

Captivating scenery, a rich history and pumping nightlife; Edinburgh is a city that has it all! Popular with the avid backpacker yearround, winter is a season when Scotland’s capital sparkles. Relish daytime wintry walks through Edinburgh’s snowy streets, whilst twinkling lights adorn decadent buildings at night. Stick around for Hogmanay when visitors embrace the world’s largest New Year party – take to the streets and watch the fireworks light up Edinburgh’s majestic castle!

Haggis Hostels –

Our beautiful Becky has been busily backpacking the country and was happy to spend a night in Edinburgh at the friendly Haggis Hostels. Based just off Princes Street – Edinburgh’s much-loved thoroughfare for shopping – the newly refurbished Haggis Hostels is very much like a home from home, with all local amenities practically on the door step. Not only has Haggis recently been awarded the ‘Certificate of Excellence’ by Trip Advisor, but it’s also been upgraded to a four star rating by Visit Scotland – a sure-fire that this hostel will impress. After a long day touring the Scottish highlands, arriving at such a tranquil and cosy hostel was an absolute dream! I was greeted by Alan, a member of staff, whose 46

friendly welcome was just as warming as the hostel itself. With the hostel based on just one floor, a safe and intimate atmosphere is created. After checking-in, I made my way across the hall to my dorm room. Laid out on my ready-made bed were some essential backpacker freebies including ear plugs and body wash, plus some delicious shortbread, which didn’t last five minutes! The staff were always willing to give advice on fun and interesting things to see and do around the capital, as well as suggesting tours

which take visitors further afield into the Highlands and beyond. I (bravely) decided to go on a ghost tour of Edinburgh’s vaults, which is

Edinburgh certainly not for the faint-hearted... And sadly, sleeping with the lights on isn’t always an option in hostels! A continental breakfast is provided every morning, where guests can munch on toast and sup cups of tea to their heart’s content. More partial to a fry-up? There’s also a splendid little local café called Snax that’s famous for its sumptuous breakfasts. Similar to the bathroom facilities, the modern kitchen is in superb condition – you can even see your reflection in the work-top surfaces! As well as computers with free WiFi, there’s also a recreation area, where backpackers can hangout and play boardgames, or get

stuck in to one of Haggis’ many books from its ‘mini’ library! Finding a hostel that’s beautifully clean is often a rarity, but Haggis really put their heart and soul into making sure the hostel’s cleanliness is top-notch. Its fresh scent and inviting glow adds to the heartwarming and homely vibe making it a perfect place to relax, whilst being a stones throw away from Edinburgh’s mesmerising sights. www.haggishostels.co.uk

All Aboard the Highland Railway! Sun rays seep through ancient Caledonian pine trees as blue skies reflect in glimmering lochs. Snowcapped mountains roll into lush glens and lofty viaducts rise above stark moors... All ‘bonnie’ backdrops to the infamous Highland Scottish Railway, where each season is captured from the comfort of your carriage. Perth and Glasgow are the main starting points, so all aboard the exquisitely named Caledonian Sleeper, a night train from London which weaves its way north ready to kick off your adventure. Early wakers rub their sleepy eyes to discover that overnight their world has been transformed. Tranquil English countryside is replaced with a land of rugged mysticism, where jagged mountains pierce rumbling skies and castle ruins melt into vast lochs. Freedom seekers can invest in a ‘Highland Rover Pass’, a ticket which personalises your journey giving you the power to hop ‘on and off’ trains where you please. Pass through the stunning Grampian

48

Mountains, a magnificent gateway to the Cairngorm National Park. Surge on towards Inverness, a thriving city brimming with activities for wanderers and history lovers alike. Explore the swamp woodland before stopping by the dramatic Urquhart Castle, rising from the shores of mysterious Lockness. Or cycle the Great Glen Way, a ten hour quest which leads you to the foot of the magnificent and ominous Ben Nevis. Once dark descends, sneak a glimpse of the Northern Lights from Thurso. This transcendental light display can be seen more often between now and 2014 due to the sun’s heightened activity. Head south to Perth – a vibrant, eco-minded city – and on to Glasgow to pick up the West Highland Line, voted the world’s ‘Top Railway Journey’ in 2009, and the most scenic in Britain for two years running. Chugging along this magical stretch of track on ‘The Jacobite’ steam train will undoubtedly enhance your Hogwarts experience and a Highland fling has never been so easy!

Rotterdam rocks! Often named the ‘Gateway into Europe’, Holland’s second biggest city need not be so vastly overshadowed by Amsterdam. Simply named from its humble beginnings as a dam on the Rotte River, the waterside setting lifts your spirits. After being bombed flat in World War II, Rotterdam now oozes modern structures and futuristic builds – reveling in its unique ‘post war’ approach to architecture which has recreated this vibrant city.

Innovation at its best comes in the form of the Cube Houses – yellow cubed show homes balancing on their axis atop of ‘normal’ buildings. Views of the Erasmus Bridge are also to be enjoyed. Architecture sprawls across all aspects of life in Rotterdam. Party at the contemporary ‘Vief + Vuig’ cafécome-club, where an interior designed by local artists provides an edgy backdrop. Rotterdam definitely rocks!

German Christmas Markets Achtung! Christmas is coming... again. Whether you become overwhelmed with festivity, or driven into a delirium of jingles and humbugs, it is undeniably unavoidable. So embrace the inevitable and allow Germany, birthplace of the traditional market, to transport you into another world. Snow-covered and enchanting, this universe of gothic architecture bursts with rich aromas of roasted almonds. Cosmopolitan capital of bohemian culture, Berlin, is guaranteed to indulge a kaleidoscopic spectrum of tastes with over 60 markets. Situated in the heart West Berlin’s shopping district, is the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church Market. Swanky souvenirs, up-to-the minute jewellery and flashy decorations fill an impressive 170 stalls. Sidestep away from the hordes of shoppers and duck into the eco-market at 52

Kollwitz Platz, a conscious alternative to the glitz of consumer festivities. Blossoming with fair-trade handicrafts, sustainably sourced Christmas trees and everything – from glühwein to Geese – is organic produce. Hamburg, does not fail to disappoint, with its own eccentric appeal. An animated market, designed by Roncalli’s Circus, beats through the heart of the city. Wandering acts and joyous carnival processions snake canals and romantically lit dockyards. Cologne’s literary laden Rudolfplatz Market enchants visitors with a taste exploration of bratwurst, cured cheeses and decadent chocolate. Glorify those guilty pleasures and satisfy your spirit... worth every Euro burned and every pound gained!

Once an ancient Roman city today Barcelona is the biggest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea. Boasting eight world heritage sites and teeming with culture, this tourism hotspot is home to the notorious Gaudí architecture, whose wacky buildings incorporating stained glass and ceramic design can be seen dotted around the city. Stroll, like a young Picasso, down La Rambla. Vibrant and colourful this infamous boulevard is a hub of otherworldly entertainment.

St Christopher’s Inns – Barbara Weibel is the fabulous winner of this issue’s BLOG competition! Why not review your favourite hostel for us to get online or in Backpax? The smiling faces behind the front desk at St Christopher’s Inns hostel in Barcelona were a welcome sight. Their warm greeting was quickly followed up with an efficient check-in process and instructions for finding my female-only dorm room. My first big surprise was the attention that had been paid to security. I had to scan my key before the elevator would move, use it a second time to access the hallway leading to my dorm room, and yet a third time to enter my room. Inside my room, the pleasant surprises continued. Double bunks were securely attached to the wall and each had dark grey privacy 54

curtains, an individual light and a power socket. Below the beds were large metal lockers on wheels that were easily pulled out for secure luggage storage, using a padlock that I carry with me. My 22 inch rolling suitcase and my mid-size backpack both easily fit into the locker. Best of all, with three WiFi routers per floor, there was free rocket-fast Internet available in all rooms. That afternoon I headed out to explore Barcelona and quickly realized that the hostel is ideally located just half a block from Plaça Catalunya, the heartbeat of the city. La Rambla, the famous pedestrian mall leading directly to

the waterfront and marina began at the southern corner of the square, while just a few blocks to the north were the famous houses designed

Barcelona by artist Antoni Gaudí - La Pedrera and Casa Batllo. Mornings began with the free breakfast provided by the hostel and once again I was surprised. Rather than the bread rolls, jam and butter provided by most hostels, St Christopher’s Inns offered cereals, juice, fresh cut fruit, peanut butter, and even a cheese platter. On the days when I wanted a bit more, I hit Barcelona’s fabulous Boqueria Market, just a five-minute walk away.

Restaurant. In warmer seasons, I could also have chosen the outdoor patio, located adjacent to the common area and separated by floor-to-ceiling windows. St Christopher’s Inns Barcelona also has twin en-suite rooms! I’ve long had a favorite hostel in Bangkok, Thailand, Lub-d; now I have a favorite in Europe, as St Christopher’s Inns also have hostels in Paris, Berlin, Bruges Amsterdam, Prague, London and across the UK.

When I wanted to write I could stay in my room or lounge around the common area, which doubled after-hours as a space for the hostel’s in-house Belushi’s Bar and read more reviews at www.backpaxmag.com

Europe’s Famous Hostels Famous Hostel is an association of 37 award winning hostels across Europe, selected as the best hostels in their locations! www.famoushostels.com

Switzerland: Topped with Treats Nestled between the toes of the magnificent Alps sit splatterings of log chalets and stone townhouses, all steeped in culture and tradition. Switzerland is an amalgamation of old and new – the historic unification of 26 sovereign cantons back in 1848 ensured a rich diversity which is reflected in today’s modernized country. Folks flock to Switzerland year round to hike along narrow paths carved into untouched mountains. Take a plunge at Lake Gruyere – just one of Switzerland’s numerous wild swimming hot spots, canoe on the river Aar and discover sleepy lakeside towns. Abseil down canyons, and enter a mystical underground world, sliding along waterfalls and exploring hidden caves, scurrying over rocks and diving into crystal blue pools. 56

When snow settles, Zermatt and other ski resorts are obvious pioneers of winter athletics. Satisfy your adrenaline cravings with a crash course in off-piste skiing, then slurp a well deserved hot chocolate by a warming log fire after your hardcore day on the slopes. For tamer souls, Switzerland has a wealth of cultural heritage. Uncover quirky modern architecture – a stark contrast to those old traditional Swiss style townhouses. Dance to folk music till the sun comes up at lively music festivals or reside in the lap of luxury by wine tasting, finishing your day with a dose of sensational opera. Oh, and certainly don’t forget to satisfy those naughty chocolate cravings!
