With travel returning to some sense of normalcy and people eager to get out of the house, Mexico is the go-to vacation destination for travelers this summer. Even when Covid numbers were at their highest, Mexico still welcomed tourists. Mexico was one of the few countries that never required a negative COVID-19 test to enter the country. The fact that travelers must have a negative test to come back into the United States did not seem to deter them from risking themselves to exposure or possibly no re-entry. Vacationers are flocking to Mexico to take advantage of discounted prices and summer promotions. Booking travel to Mexico right now is easy and affordable. From the all-inclusive resorts that accommodate the budget traveler to the luxury resorts for the more exquisite traveler, to the chic boutique hotels for the not-so-conventional travel, hotel rooms are rapidly filling up for the summer months. Whether you visit the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean or the dark blue waters of the Pacific, Mexico has a destination to fit the needs of all travelers. Although there are many beautiful destinations in Mexico, these five are more likely to see an increase in tourism this summer.

1. Los

Cabos-

Perched at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, in the Mexican state of Baja California is this Pacific gem. Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo make up what vacationers know as Los Cabos. Dreamy blue beaches, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, balnearios, all-inclusive resorts, and beautiful beach homes are just a few of the amenities that Cabo provides. One famous spot that tourist flock to see is the sea arch, El Arco de Cabo San Lucas. Los Cabos International Airport is home to both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Thanks to local natives, there are plenty of authentic restaurants and shops for tourists to visit. Resorts can range anywhere from $99 a night upwards into the thousands, depending on the type of experience you want. Los Cabos is currently ranked #12 for top destinations to visit in Mexico. This fact really surprised me because, during my recent trip to Cabo, I had a wonderful time.

2. Tulum Located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, Tulum was one of the last cities built by the Mayans. Tulum has lots of architectural ruins dating back to the 13th and 15th centuries. Known for its beautiful Caribbean coastline and cenotes, ranked as the number one destination to visit in Mexico, Tulum is sure to please all travelers.

According to U.S. News Travel online, Tulum appeals to travelers who desire a more secluded getaway. Tulum is home to many smaller resorts and boutique hotels; it is divided into four main areas: Pueblo (the town), the archaeological area, the reserve at Sian Ka’an, and the zona hotelera (hotel zone). Tourists may find that Tulum is a bit more expensive because of the personal experiences that travelers engage in.

3. CancunAlso located on the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is the most visited resort area in the country. It sits on the Caribbean Sea and is one of Mexico’s easternmost points. Hosting over 2 million visitors each year, Cancun is definitely a hot spot in Mexico. College students from all over the world head to Cancun for its world-famous Spring Break parties. All-inclusive resorts, sandy beaches, exotic nightclubs, and inexpensive flights from the U.S. and other locations make Cancun an easy destination for those looking for a quick getaway. Whether you want to explore the jungle on an ATV, go snorkeling in the Caribbean, explore the caverns, or just soak up some sun on the beach… Cancun will not disappoint. The hotel zone in Cancun is home to resorts ranging from family-friendly to adult-only, to the LGBT community, to nudists.

The vibe in Cancun is definitely a non-stop party. If you want a more quiet vacation but still desire the “Cancun” feel, then just to the north is a band of resorts known as the Riviera Maya. Cancun is one of the most affordable destinations in Mexico.

4. Playa

del Carmen-

Known as one of the major cruise ports in Mexico, Playa del Carmen is located along the Caribbean Sea in the municipality of Solidaridad, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is a popular tourist area in eastern Mexico and considered a location in the Rivera Maya. Playa del Carmen is home to luxury condominiums, vacation rentals, restaurants, boutique hotels, and local entertainment. Tourist activity in Playa del Carmen centers on Quinta Avenida or Fifth Avenue. Fifth Avenue is a walkway located only one or two blocks inland from the beach with hundreds of shops, bars, and restaurants. Tourists can catch the ferry over to Cozumel to enjoy scuba diving. Golf lovers can also find pristine golf courses in Playa del Carmen. Playacar lies just south of the main area of Playa del Carmen, here you can find the all-inclusive hotels. A popular tourist spot is the Xcaret Eco Park, a Mexican eco-archaeological park located just south of the town of Xcaret.

Cozumel is best known for its coral reefs and as the most popular cruise ship port in the Caribbean. In fact, with over 3 million cruise ship passengers docking in Cozumel every year, it is one of the most visited ports in the world. Prior to the pandemic, as many as 8 cruise ships docked in Cozumel a day. Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and is separated from the mainland by the Cozumel Channel. The main town in Cozumel is San Miguel de Cozumel. Cozumel coral reef is home to over 1000 marine species. The coral reef is part of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef system on the earth after the Great Barrier Reef. Cozumel a prime location for scuba diving and snorkeling. Needless to say that the Covid-19 has taken a major toll on the cruise industry and tourism in Cozumel. Once tourists dock in Cozumel, they are within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and other landmarks. Cozumel is home to tons of activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, exploring the ruins, parasailing, and horseback riding just to name a few. Visitors from the cruise ships can also buy day passes to beaches and local resorts if they just want to relax. One famous beach in Cozumel is Mr. Sancho’s beach, where a day pass will cost you $55. There are also plenty free beaches in Cozumel like Playa Bonita, Punta Morena, and San Martin. Cozumel does not have a plethora of resort-like many of the above-mentioned destinations, but they do have all-inclusive resorts for the travel not visiting on a cruise.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUBS Golf is becoming more of an everyday past time for many. It’s not just a sport for men. Women and children have embraced quiet time on the green more than ever. But if you’re new to the golfing, how do you know which club to use? Here is a good reference on getting to know your golf clubs.

Drivers: Traditionally known as the woods. They come with the largest club head in the golf bag and are for long-distance. This is typically the primary club you start with during the round. They are meant to give you maximum length away from the tee.

Fairways: Beginning golfers who find it hard to hit using a driver, may opt to use this instead because its extra loft helps in hitting a straight shot.

Hybrids: This is a cross between the iron and a wood club. It has the same shape as a wood club, and the length of an iron club, making it easier to travel the same distance of an iron.

Irons: Capable of covering long, midrand, and short-range shots from the tee.

Wedges: Help produce shots of varying disances and get you out of difficult situations. You can use gap, sand, and lob wedges for short pitches from the drivers fairway and get out of sand traps, for example.

Adding exercise and a healthy diet into your daily routine may help your body fight against many illnesses, depending on your body type. Starting and keeping up a regular routine is not as hard as it may seem. The key is being open to change and taking it one day at a time; but you must get started.

Here are some simple tips for getting started: • Prepare yourself mentally.

• Decide on a start date and stick to it.

• Evaluate your current routine and come up with a plan to begin adjusting that routine slowly. This will help you prepare your body for the changes that are about to happen.

• Drink water only for the first week. No carbonated drinks. If the switch to water only is too drastic for you, then start by cutting your carbonated drink intake in half for a week. Decrease the number every week thereafter until you’re down to water only.

• Come up with a nutritional plan that works for you.

• Add a daily walk to your routine.

• Research exercises tat work for you and try them. There are many great workouts that you can do at home, in the gym, or on the go.

triving for excellence is a common goal of many males in the world today; however, setting a goal of excellence for yourself and a nationwide generation of men is a challenge that not many can easily embrace.

With humility, compassion, and a personality that captures the essence of black men, 51-year-old Donald Morton, Jr. has the heart to ensure that other black males have an opportunity to live life to the fullest, becoming the highest and best versions of themselves.

After journeying through tumultuous times of his own, he understands the struggles that men face, and he openly embraces them and works with them to create a shift in their way of thinking.

With this mindset, Donald stated that he “endeavors to be the walking, breathing expression of the love of God toward himself and mankind.”

Inspire Today Magazine sat down with Donald and talked about his biggest inspiration and what led him to be the man that he is today.

Just like many others, his inspiration began in a very familiar place, which was at the heart of his legacy.

Donald’s inspiration for what and who he was to become, was his father, Donald Morton, Sr., a man who did the best that he could with what he had at the time. Although unintentionally, Donald’s father was very influential in shaping the course that he would take in his life. Donald Sr was not always emotionally or physically present, but the idea is to become most of what his father did not become, to create a strong legacy that could be passed on not only to Donald’s adult children but also to many other black men.

Donald described his father as a man who was faced with many challenges in life that left him hurt, pained, and without an opportunity to share life’s experiences with him. Donald Sr used alcohol to escape the trauma of not knowing even who his father was. Donald laments, “My father died of chronic alcoholism. He literally drank himself to death”. Looking back at what could have been, Donald now endeavor’s to be the version of his father that he was not able to achieve.

Before passing, Donald’s father wrote a letter to his mom, Donald Jr’s grandmother saying, “Please tell my son, I loved him, I just didn’t know how to be a father.” According to Donald, this was the first time that he truly heard and felt his father’s heart, and unfortunately, it was expressed from the grave. Those eye-opening words let him know that his father wanted to be present but simply didn’t know how, which again, left Donald in a position of determination to become the inspiration that his father could have been.

the CHARGE & RESPONSIBILITY

That determination led him to personally charge himself with being a fully present parent in the lives of his own children. “I feel robbed, and when I have children, I choose not to rob them of me being fully and completely available” are words that Donald internally uttered as he was left with so many unanswered questions on the day of his father’s funeral. This charge carries a weight of responsibility as Donald vowed to be transparent and authentic with his children, as they received a front-row seat watching him win many battles, grow from a few battles, completely blow some situations, come out of other situations stronger, after dealing with addictions, health, and near-death experiences throughout his journey. Regardless of the situation, his children ultimately get the full, transparent version of their father, with nothing being held back. This was important to Donald because he knew that legacy was not necessarily always clean, but sometimes it was also made up of the ugly realities and the hard lessons that we encounter daily.

In Donald’s own words, “we typically hide all of the bad stuff in an attempt to preserve an image. Every man, husband and father wants to be thought of well, but we have a responsibility to own the full story.”

Donald further explained that responsibility, being a compound word, is a man’s ability to respond; it’s his capacity to ‘meet the moment’, and it often reminds other men that they must always take responsibility. They must always show up to meet the moment head on. Being able to recognize my faults with my children by telling them things like, “this is what I’ve done, this is how I messed up, and this is how I should have handled it, is me choosing to disrupt generational patterns by taking responsibility and telling my children the truth.

People often see the outcome of success, but they don’t see the village that has pushed you to get to where you are. Inspire Today Magazie asked Donald, “Who are some of those people who have been there for you in your journey?”

Michael A. Freeman, Founder, and Pastor of Spirit of Faith Christian Center in Maryland has been a huge inspiration in my life. If there’s a person alive who’s had the single most impact in my life, it has been him, mostly because he’s a no-nonsense kind of guy, who has never abandoned me, always loved me, but unreservedly held me accountable. He’s told me, in my most difficult moments, “Don, face it like a Man!” Those words echo in me to this day. He and his wife Dr. DeeDee Freeman have been there for me and pushed me in ways that were uncomfortable but truly needed for my own growth and development into manhood. inspiretodaymagazine.com

In a way that no other

mother could for me, my mom has been there for me… My mom allowed me to recover from prostate cancer for months in her living room. She is my hero. She went above and beyond the call of duty to be my mother and nursed me through my health challenges.

My kids are my

inspiration. My daughter Amber has 2 master’s degrees and thinks she is the mother of us all, my oldest son, Kyshaad, is extremely intelligent and is raising a beautiful family of his own, and my youngest son Hunter, “DJ Balaire”, is a brilliant, gifted and award-winning DJ and is authentically himself. I could say so much about them, but it all sums up with, for these reasons and so many more, they are my inspiration.

My wife is a perfect example of “Grace and Grit”, a story of

perseverance from a young single mom, whose mom passed when she was young. Tiffany took the responsibility of raising her siblings.

She got married but tragically became a widow after only a year of marriage but still raised her children, helped with her siblings, worked as a nurse, and graduated from Delaware State University. She’s a super woman. I draw from that tenacity.

Without hesitation, Donald continuously contributes to the community in his efforts to fight for and with adult black males. He feels that what is happening in society now, is a direct result of missing and malfunctioning men, therefore, his contribution is to provide, in himself, the best possible example of a resilient man. Having gone through many things, living through many failures while continuing to move forward, he holds as his chief purpose in life, to transform an entire culture, one black man at a time.

One particular community effort began in 2016, stemming from an overwhelming number of people on death row being men of color, due to systemic injustices, Donald began his fight against the broken system concerning capital punishment in his community. One in which he continues to partner with others in the fight for and boldly work towards his commitment to change. The challenges that Donald has experienced and the lessons he has learned is now lived out in “The ReManned Project™”, a coaching and consulting firm that specializes in personal and leadership development for adult Black males that seek to interrupt patterns and break vicious cycles of missed potential so that they transform their lives, leadership and legacy. The ReManned Project™ is for adult black men, ages 25 and up, specializing in personal and leadership development so that men can break their cycles of fatherlessness, being under-educated and uneducated, under-employed and unemployed. This program is developed in response to society’s implication that attempts to erase the unique contributions of men to family and society. What we own, we can change. Very similar to the Invictus poem that states… “I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.” This idea is based on the idea of every man being accountable and responsible for himself and his position in life. He takes extreme ownership without excuse.

The ReManned Project™ is birthed through the lens of a young man who felt the need to shift the focus to the plight of Black men, their positions and the important roles they play in their families and society.

As the outpouring of men continues to grow and develop, Donald knows that this is something that needs to be made available to more black men across the country and around the world. Men who come through this program will be provided with the necessary tools to succeed in their spirituality, health and wellness, career and money etc… They learn leadership in being husband and father and even son to elderly parents. They learn to leave an impact on this world that can’t be erased. Participation in the Remanned Project is available on both virtual and in person platforms.

Many men don’t understand the power of male mentoring. Why should they try it? We don’t like mentoring, but we understand coaching. Men understand sports. They understand coaches and they understand systems. WHERE MEN HURT NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION

H

anging out at Master Barber Headquarters in the Houston area is where you will find Andrew J. Landry on a regular basis, but not for your typical reason.

Andrew is the Executive Director of Where Men Hurt, a non-profit organization setup to give men a safe place for men to be transparent and open to talking about everyday issues of life.

“Men don’t typically have a safe place to talk about issues of life, and they are hurting.” So, what better place to help heal than the barber shop? A place where men gather and converse on a regular basis.

Teaming up with Valo da Barber, owner of Master Barber Headquarters, allows Andrew the opportunity to provide the space needed for men to come and tackle issues that they may face in a non-judgmental and confidential setting.

This no-membership required safe space, is where the Where Men Hurt organization carries out its mission to help as many men as possible overcome challenges and receive the support that they need to take back control of their lives mentally and emotionally, ultimately building stronger communities, families and futures.

“The primary goal is to present a stronger, healthier and more confident man after they have been connected with Where Men Hurt.”

If someone needs help beyond what can be provided during any given weekly gathering, then Andrew works with other organizations around the community to connect them with the support that they need.

Where Men Hurt gatherings are held at Master Barber Headquarters, located at 1502 E. 1st Street in Humble, TX, which is about fifteen minutes north of the downtown area of Houston.

Men of all backgrounds and races are welcome to attend these meetings, which are announced on the Where Men Hurt social media platform. Meetings are informal, but open for discussion with the premise that something that one man is going through, another man has encountered and can provide sound, nonjudgmental advice.

Andrew attributes the success of the program being due to its relational structure. “Building relationships where people can trust you, can relate to you, and can count on you are important.”

In addition to being the founder of the Where Men Hurt organization, Andrew J. Landry is a two-time author, speaker, husband, father, and grandfather who grew up in a small country town before relocating to the Houston area.

CBMLA - Concerned Black Men of Los Angeles - Seeks to unite African American Men to support and empower youth and advocate for the betterment of our communities. As part of Mentorship, we provide community leadership and encourage education as a First Priority.

PBMA - Positive Black Male Association of Houston, Inc.’s mission is to empower youth, build strong bodies, minds, and spirits in our home. This program teaches, guides and directs others as a means of sharing and enchanting developmental growth.

Where Men Hurt of Houston, Texas aims to build stronger communities, families, and futures by providing men necessary resources, support and tools to successfully cope with emotions, expectations, and life disappointments in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
