AN EDUCATOR’S LEGACY

IMPACTING BEYOND THE BOOKS

I

t has been said that there are generally two dates that sum up every life. The first date is the date of birth, followed by one’s physical death or departure from this earthly life. What matters most is the dash between. The dash represents ones’ earthly time, and it is in that time that our legacy is framed. Victor Belfort said “Legacy is not what you do for yourself.

It is what you do for the next generation.”

An educator’s legacy cannot be measured nor counted. The dividends are infinite and are often not immediately known. Teaching is an age-old honorable profession. It is so honorable that the Holy Bible records Jesus Christ as a teacher using parables to ensure that those in the multitudes not only heard, but understood, the lessons that were being taught.

Today is no different from that period of time.

As educators in our present world of trying times, we find our joy, passion and fulfillment in pouring knowledge into others.

There is, however, a greater gift that a genuine educator will pass on to his or her students.

Knowledge, we understand, is not enough. In addition to imparting the technical knowledge of various subject areas including the core subjects of Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts, we also impart lessons of character i.e., politeness, teamwork,

discipline, punctuality, etc. These skills and characteristics are invaluable and are necessary to a productive, contributing member of society.

Educators supplement “book learning” with the necessary characteristics that hopefully, enables students to apply knowledge wisely.

In doing so, one has a greater expectation of assisting in contributing to building and or strengthening positive, productive lives that serve others. The ultimate goal of an educator is to assist students in preparing to live secure, independent adult lives. A life that contributes positively to the community. Lives that allow them to reach their potential and build a better world as they serve others.

The legacy of an educator strives to help mold a compassionate, non-judgmental person with moral character that will in some way contribute to the building of a better tomorrow.

That educator, by example, will have nurtured confidence, perseverance, and determination.

Because many have been willing to share their personal struggles and demonstrate moral fortitude, they are able to encourage their students.

Educators frequently share life experiences, both losses and victories. Sharing is helpful and encouraging when some personal battles, and even some defeats are shared. In doing so, the next generation can visualize the road

to victory and success through the living example in front of them. It is often through the educators’ personal testimony and the shared examples of others that students are able to clearly identify challenges as just that. Challenges! Challenges that can then be identified as mere obstacles that they can overcome. Challenges that often guide or direct one’s path to his or her ultimate goal and often ones’ life purpose.

While educators are generally envisioned in their classroom settings, their reach goes far beyond. Their lessons are not confined within four walls; indeed, they are found in church’s, workplaces, homes, and in various forms of community out-reach programs.

Learning experiences exist wherever and whenever people are gathered, and someone is willing to share life experiences including both losses and victories.

An educators’ voice can be heard years after a student has left the classroom, the sports field, or the club meeting room. That same

voice can be heard saying, “it’s okay, just try again”, “Don’t worry it was hard for me too until I practiced “, “ Wow! You did a great job!” “I’m sorry you’re having a bad day! Want to talk?” Sometimes just a warm smile, kind word or pat on the back goes a long way. These are the memories that linger and show up later in life in the form of tenacity, loyalty, courage and compassion.

These characteristics are valuable lessons not taught in the textbook but demonstrated during formative and impressable years on a daily basis.

The legacy of an educator, a dedicated educator, is not only a knowledgeable student, but one capable and willing to apply the knowledge gained to lift society to a higher plane. There is abundant satisfaction and a sense of achievement in watching students become confident citizens who have persevered despite whatever hardships they may have faced.

He nurtures, waters, watches and waits. The harvest is always abundant, and the ground, if tilled properly, will continue to yield a rich harvest. The crop does not grow instantly.

It takes time and patience. However, when harvest time comes, the sower (farmer) witnesses the crop that he has so patiently sowed into.

Like the sower, an educator often does not see the results of seeds planted immediately.

It takes time, patience, and most of all perseverance to continue planting and nurturing, while extracting as many “weeds”(bad habits and influences) as possible. When planting and caring for a young tree, it is sometimes necessary to bend it in the direction you want it to grow.

Frequently, the tree must be given corrective direction by guiding it to grow straight up.

Sunlight, water, fertilizer, and constant care almost always results in a strong new tree.

Girlfriend, GET IT TOGETHER! Reasons Why You NEED A Therapist

W

hy do so many of us feel the need to carry life by ourselves or lack the ability to ask for assistance when needed?

This kind of behavior has become very problematic in the black community, specifically, among women. A contributing factor of this is due to the notion that we must carry everything and continue to show up in life, even when everything around us is falling apart. Some believe that in order to be considered a “strong black woman” you must carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, all while smiling, as if nothing is wrong.

As a therapist, I see so many women who hold in so much hurt, pain, disappointment, and trauma. Some of us do this because we feel as though we have to hold everything in and or always have it together. We do this out of fear that if we don’t, we may run the risk of appearing to be weak, thus striping us of our strong black woman title. However, I want to shift that belief and shared with you why you might need to see a therapist.

It doesn’t make you more of a woman to ignore your need for help. Actually, it shows that you are not able to trust others with your truth, thus leaving you in a place where you might find yourself lacking the capacity to be vulnerable. Ask yourself, “Why do I need to always have it together”? Oftentimes, we are in a mental competition with the next person, and we refuse to want to show them our hand or what might be perceived as a weakness. We may do this to keep up the 10

appearance that further the notion that as a strong black woman, I do not need anybody. Just reflect on the things above and see how you may fit into this category.

I want to see every woman win, so I am going to share with you 5 key indicators to look out for when assessing if you should see a therapist.

1. You lack the ability to smile or turn off your defense mode.

Do you find yourself always angry and on the defense? Or do you find that you have very little in your life to smile about? If you answered yes to any one of these then Girlfriend, you might need to see a therapist. It’s not healthy to always find yourself bickering, fighting, or always angry with those around you. When was the last time you remember being happy and or feeling light? Girl, get you a therapist so you can find that smile again.

2. You find yourself withdrawn, shutdown, or lack interest in things that once brought you pleasure.

Cancelling plans or having little to no desire to be around those you love, may be a sign that you are isolating yourself. Ask yourself, “am I isolating myself”? If you are feeling any of the above, you might be experiencing a bit of depression. To ensure you can get the help you need, it would be best to reach out to a therapist who can assist you as you navigate these feelings.

3. You are very suspicious about the motives of others or find it extremely hard to trust people in your life without any reason to be mistrusting.

Is it hard for you to let people in or trust those in our life? Do you feel that everyone is out to get you and that you cannot allow anyone in? If so, this is a big sign that you are still carrying hurt and betrayal from your past. The hurt and pain that you are carrying may be spilling over into your present and future. Do not allow unresolved past hurt, mistrust and or betrayal keep you from being able to connect and share with those who mean you no harm.

If you are finding it hard to let go, this is an indication you may need to see a therapist.

4. You feel like you don’t need anybody and can do everything on your own. (Super independence syndrome) If you feel like you are so independent that you fail to allow others to help you, that is a sign of mistrust, and you might need to figure out why you aren’t open to receiving help from others. Do you prevent yourself from asking others for help, out of fear that they might throw it back in your face? Or do you deny help from others due to your fears of appearing weak? If this is you, you are holding onto fear and mistrust. Fear and mistrust are foundational elements when assessing for past trauma. Extreme independence is a trauma response that needs to be worked through and resolved so that you can find yourself in a place where you can accept and ask for help when needed.

5. You just want to keep your emotional wellness intact so that you maintain your mental health.

You don’t have to have a deeply rooted issue or concern in order to be a great candidate for therapy. Therapy is for anyone who’d like to stay connected with themselves emotionally.

Also remember that there is a difference between Things that are therapeutic and going to therapy. Things like yoga, exercise, eating right, meditation, and deep breathing are all wonderful therapeutic activities. However, these things do not replace or substitute the act of actually going to therapy. I believe that everyone should have a therapist or at least a life coach at some point in their life. Therapy is nothing to be afraid of. Often, people don’t go to therapy because of the stigma associated with going. The Girlfriend Therapist is here to tell you to experience therapy for yourself. There are so many reasons why people decide to go to therapy. Get out of your own way and give it a try if you have never done so. If you have gone to therapy before, this might also be a good time to reconnect with your therapist. Life can be challenging at time and we need to have a safe, non-biased, noon judgmental place to openly express the things we hold inside. Find a therapist who can hold that space for you for so that you can heal, grow, and glow. If you had not considered going to therapy prior to this article, I hope you’ve changed your mind.

. Hydrolic Acid is a game changer when it comes to its hydration and moisture retention abilities. When applied topically in a serum, hyaluronic acid lends its hydration abilities to the skin to soothe and deeply moisturize. It is a humectant, meaning it pulls in moisture from the environment and its surroundings and holds onto it, delivering long-lasting hydration to thirsty skin. The moisturizing power of hyaluronic acid helps to make skin appear firmer and more toned.

A little hydration goes a long way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and helps the overall look and feel of your skin. HA is great for dry skin, of course- but is non-comedogenic, so it’s also a good choice for oily or acne-prone skin types.

. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are chemical exfoliators that help remove dead skin cells and reveal radiant skin hidden underneath, clearing the way for skin cell regeneration. One of our favorite AHAs is Glycolic Acid, a water-soluble acid that can increase luminosity of the skin by exfoliating the outermost layer of skin to reveal newer, brighter layers underneath. It speeds up cellular turnover, stimulates collagen production, and helps the skin feel firmer. Glycolic acid is great for wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and even acne-prone skin. Low concentrations (1-2%) can be used daily, higher percentage concentrations (10-20%) should be used 1-2x per week. Anything above 15% should be kept on for a few minutes only and then wiped off.

. Vitamin C is one of those ingredients that everyone can benefit from. Not only does vitamin C promote collagen production, which can diminish the appearance and fine lines- it is also a powerful antioxidant, meaning it offers protection to the skin from free radicals caused by sun exposure and other environmental toxins. It is for the latter reason that dermatologists usually recommend using a product with vitamin C as a part of your daytime routine. Vitamin C also plays a role in minimizing the appearance of pores, brightening the complexion, correcting uneven skin tone and fading discoloration. You can maximize the benefits of vitamin C by pairing it with vitamin E or ferulic acid- other antioxidants that aid in the absorption of vitamin C into the skin.

. Sunscreen is a product that most definitely works. Between premature aging, fine lines and wrinkles and skin cancer, you need to be shielding your skin from the sun with a proper sunscreen. A sunscreen that offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays is ideal, with a SPF of at least 30.

Sunscreen should be the last step of your skincare routine, right after moisturizer and you can layer it alone or under makeup.

. Retinol. Potentially the holy grail of skincare, we’ve saved retinoids for last. Retinol is scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of aging. Not only that, but retinoids (a family of vitamin A molecules) are effective in combating sun damage and boosting collagen production. Basically, retinoids are an anti-aging powerhouse. Retinol is also an effective treatment for acne- reducing clogged pores, inflammation and oil production. Retinol can be irritating, so it’s important to take time to let the skin adjust slowly and make sure to use a moisturizing serum to combat dryness. Skip the AHAs on the nights you use retinol. Start using every 3-5 nights, gradually increasing consistency until your skin is comfortable with every night or every other night.

GUYS VS. GIRLS TRIPS: The U by: Wynona Chevalier, a.k.a.

I

decided to write a blog to debunk the myth about why guys do not plan and take trips as often as girls. However, to do this, we must mention girl trips to compare some critical aspects of planning and executing a guy’s trip. There are two main things that I want to highlight about guys’ trips vs. girl’s trips; these two things are planning and accommodations. So, where do I start, at the beginning with the actual planning? Girls tend to start planning months in advance, even for just a weekend getaway.

In contrast, guys can plan and pay for a trip in less than 24 hours. Girls are particular to details, like the time the flight leaves, the location of the hotel, which outfits they will need to bring, and how should they wear their hair. Most guys (take hence that I said most) want basic accommodations. A nice room to sleep, adequate legroom on the plane, a resort with good drinks, and a guaranteed good time. Guys do not take months to research destinations; they usually have 20

an idea of where they want to go and they are ready to make reservations the same day. On the other hand, girls research and compare destinations before concluding. The next big dilemma is sleeping accommodations. It is no big secret that four girls will share a hotel room with two double beds, even though it might be very crowded when it comes to the bathroom. Girls are more prone to step out of the shower half-naked or walk around in just their undies while talking to each other. However, this is not the case for guys; they do not share accommodations as quickly as girls do.

I spoke with a few guys to get their perspective on sharing accommodations. In talking with a different range of guys, considering factors such as age, race, ethnic background, and profession, most guys preferred to have their room. The younger guys informed me that they do not mind sharing a room with family members, old friends, and college buddies, because it may significantly inspiretodaymagazine.com

decrease the cost of the room. Whereas the older guys I spoke with stated that they prefer to have their own room. It is hard to speculate why some guys choose not to share their room; maybe this has something to do with their masculinity, or they prefer to be alone.

Devin and Alexis are sisters who have started individual entrepreneural journey at differrent times, but are both making great impacts in their communities and across the nation by creating a buzz and creating warm memories in the kitchen. Inspire Today Magazine, spoke with them the inspiration and legacy that led them to be able to thrive and grow as much as they have in their business in such a short time.

Devin Augustine is owner and co-founder of Majos Sweets, a Houston-based and Louisiana born pastry company that has been warming the hearts of homes across America with their authentic sweet treat creations.

Devin found her love in the kitchen after spending a lot of time cooking and baking as a child.

With her grandmother and parents being the foundation of crafting her time in the kitchen not as a chore, but into a love for providing something that her family would enjoy. This foundation soon turned into a business that she and her husband started to bring fun, laughter, and good times into homes across America.

With over 15 years in of experience in baking, not only does she cater to the homes of many, but Majos Sweets also cater events for businesses, provide baking classes, and has donated to several causes and communities during their times of need. Providing for the community is close to Devin’s heart because for her, “It’s not just about selling, but about helping others in need”.

Devin often travels outside of her Houston-based company area to cater events and personally deliver treats ranging from custom cheesecakes, bakery style cakes, miniature treats, and other custom items.

Alexis Saner, co-owner and founder of Billboard Buzzing, a company created to touch the lives of others by giving them an affordable way to advertise, highlight, and promote their business, individual event or accomplishments on billboards from coast to coast.

In what started out as a tribute to her aunt in honor of her life and legacy, Alexis partnered with Ernest Jackson to continue the mission of making others feel good, while spreading their message in bright lights, the same way that it touched her family. Alexis says, “I’ve always wanted to do something to make others feel good, and once I started; I knew that this was it.”

Since then, Billboard Buzzing has branched out to locations all over the United States, and has worked with many businesses, entrepreneurs, a-list celebrities, families, and more to promote their message nationwide.

When daddy got home, we all flocked to him, and he loved it. To say that they played a major role in my life, is what it is. I don’t think that I would be the person that I am today had I not had Karl and Darlene Saner as my parents.

They raised us and groomed us; and all five of us are successful in our own way; and I feel that we make them proud daily.

Alexis: My legacy is my parents. I remember when I was 11 years old my mom gave me a piece of paper. She asked me to draw a circle ITM: Growing up, did you imagine that you on it. ITM: Who is your legacy and what roles do they play in your drive and success in ITM: How has your sister inspired you during business? your journey?

From that moment, a local business called to ask for my menu to place an order. That one surprising moment was not only seen by me, but by others and was the beginning of non-stop business for me and it was because of my sister who believed in me enough to support and highlight my dreams in one of the best ways that she knows how. So, no matter where we go, I tell people that I am Majos Sweets, but let me tell you how I got started.

She is my hero. I remember she went skating with her friends and I wanted to go so bad, and she agreed to let me go. I was so excited, because she is older than me and I didn’t always get to go. She has always been my inspiration. Today, I still try to make her proud every day just as I am proud of her.

ITM: What advice would you give to other young women who are starting a business when they are feeling defeated or want to quit?

Alexis: Life may bring you bumps and curves, and doors may close on you sometimes, but don’t give up. The door has been shut for a reason. Another door is meant to open. Don’t give up. Keep Pushing. Pray, pray and pray until you can’t pray anymore because God is the reason for everything.

egacy by birth and within their sorority, Judith and Brandi brings energy, fashion, fun and empowerment to their legacy as entrepreneurs within the Paparazzi World. They can be found in their individual Facebook live rooms, “Pretty Bling by Brandi”, and “Jeweled by Judith” several times a week engaging their audience, not only with shopping, but also with music, trivia, fun, and games. Their goal is to create an atmosphere of excitement while you’re shopping, enjoying good music and networking with others. Not only can you find them on their individual pages, but they often pop up on each other’s live shopping sessions, bringing an added experience to their audience.

Judith and Brandi aren’t strangers to legacy building, they come from a long line of legacy builders in their family. Born in the West Monroe, Louisiana area, Judi began trailblazing by being amongst those who integrated the school system where she attended. She then went on to graduate in Speech Pathology and Audiology from La Tech University. You can easily say that her energy and enthusiasm has sat with her long before her Paparazzi career began, as she was a pom-pom girl and participated in many organizations while in college. start and leave a legacy, Judith served as the first black president of National Speech and Hearing Association; and was the first black Miss La Tech. Judith is very active in the community and in her church; which was instilled in her from her parents, aunts, and other family members. Within the community, Judi served for 11 years as Executive Director of the Black Heritage Cultural Festival of Louisiana; she is a 25-year life and legacy member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and a proud member of Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated, where she has been serving and mentoring for over 25 years.

After retiring from the school system where she worked as a Speech Pathologist, she had plans to enjoy retirement until she started watching videos on Facebook in 2019 about paparazzi and was intrigued. She ordered jewelry and fell in love with the quality, price, and availability of the product. She nervously signed up to work with the company, knowing that she wasn’t a salesperson, but she quickly realized that as long as she brought her personality and true love for the product, then she would succeed at blessing others with a quality product, while helping them look great, feel great, and save money.

Her Facebook live “room” is not just for selling jewelry to strangers, it’s a room where those who join in, become family. Judith told us that, “there were people who have stated that they were going through some major problems in life and feeling depressed but coming into the “room” with us and the atmosphere that we create, gives them something to look forward to.” During the pandemic season, her daughter Brandi, became the first person to join her team.

Brandi told us that her favorite way to shop is online, so this was a no-brainer. When seeing that you can get involved at a low cost, and provide this service without leaving your home, she was very intrigued. Brandi wanted to wait to join, however, but when she did, it wasn’t her who signed her up, it was her husband and she’s been loving it ever since.

Both Brandi and Judi are members of the Top Elite tier of entrepreneurs in the company and it didn’t take them long to get there.

Within 3 months of joining in 2019, both Brandi and Judi moved up to Directorship Level, within their individual businesses.

They attribute much of their success to their creativity and innovative ways of providing the fashion experience to others.

Judith – My first legacy is my mom. What I saw in her and the person that she is, I couldn’t help but want to be like her. Her spirit, motivation and how she carries herself. Not only her, but the women in our family are very strong women. They knew what they wanted and went after it. Even if they were knocked down, they didn’t stay down. They have their pity party, then put on their big girl panties and keep moving.

There are other people in my life who are my legacy, like my very good childhood friends.

You know, they come in different stages and levels.

Brandi – Obviously, when you have good examples in front of you, you tend to emulate them. So, my mom, of course is my legacy.

Watching her go back to school to get her master’s degree after having children and seeing her dedication, as I sat in the back of her class was very inspiring to me. Also, my grandmother promoted education when education wasn’t a popular thing for black women to get. LEGACY BUILDERS As a moment of inspiration and encouragement, we asked Brandi and Judith to share one quote that they live by: Judith – “You can be a conqueror in all things through My love… for neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers… will separate you from My love… Romans 8:37-39. This quote comes from a scripture flipchart that was given to her by her aunt many years ago. She keeps it near and reads it every day.

Brandi – “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts…”

This quote from Winston Churchill is one of the empowering affirmations that Brandi shared with her VIP group to uplift and encourage them to keep pushing daily.

Judith – Even though you see me doing this, this can be you? Don’t worry about “I don’t do lives” You can do this. It only takes the faith of a mustard seed. When it comes to Angela Lindon, that phrase coincides with her everyday lifestyle. To everyone who knows her, they know that she is the epitome of character, charm, and class. The Life-Changing Experience

In March of 2020, Angela contracted COVID-19, a health challenge that completely changed her life. As a woman who was always so encouraging and uplifting to others; she now had to deal with the downfalls of a nationwide health scare. Contracting COVID caused her to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and the idea of being afraid to go outside. During this time, she, like many didn’t understand why this was happening which caused her to doubt. But only for a moment. She then found herself shouting out to God, “Why?”. She knew that she had always been the one to take care of everyone else and make sure that they were ok, so how could He let something like this happen? At that moment, she had to tap into who Angela was and began to plead with God to show her what he had in store for her because clearly, she couldn’t have gone through all this adversity for nothing. After much pleading, she made a promise to God that if He would get her through this, then she promised to walk in Pure Purpose™. That promise led her to an outpouring, and what was the beginning of Glamorous Sass.

The Entrepreneur As the owner of Glamorous Sass, Angela pours herself into others by helping them both feel and look good from the inside out. Her company allows her to provide a personalized shopping experience for each client through Image Consulting, Coaching, Personal Shopping, Wardrobe Styling, Closet Audits, and Makeovers that fit each person’s unique personality and leaves them with confidence, class, and style. For the virtual client, she also offers fashion squares and sends them links to purchase items selected in the set.

Although Angela did not start her career as a personal stylist, her love for people and experience as a Respiratory Therapist for 17 years, molded her for the task ahead. When asked if she would have never thought that she would where she is in her life now, she answered, “God had to make me uncomfortable for this to work. As a Respiratory Therapist, I was making good money, I was at a place where I could retire from. I had no reason to step out of the norm.

Never in a million years, did I think that I could be this Businesswoman. That just goes to show you that when you think that you know which path your life is headed, God will step right in and show

you that he knows what’s best and He is always in control, and I think one of the hardest things has been to let Him have control and allow Him to lead me.”

Angela also provides a service called the “Hotseat”. This particular service allows her to uplift, encourage and inspire her clients who may come in with low selfesteem, low self-worth, or just feeling down and out about their image, body, or clothing. In this service, she empowers them so that when they leave each other’s presence, they feel like they are standing ten feet tall.

Bridging the Gap of Legacy Past and Future Angela attributes her sense of style and class to her grandmother. Because of the foundation and legacy that her grandmother laid, she went on to form “Rose Gardens for Princess Tea Parties”.

The purpose of these tea parties is to teach young ladies the same class and style that was instilled within her by her grandmother. From fashion to life choices, these tea parties will give those in attendance, something that will prepare them for the future.

If she had to sum entrepreneurial spirit and legacy into one word, it would be “Pure Purpose™”, which she has now trademarked.

The Inspiration When asked about inspiration, Angela stated that her mother has been an amazing force in her life for the past few years and has been her biggest inspiration. Watching her mother go through so many trials and tribulations and still push through. Angela added, “Every life lesson that I’ve gone through in the past 5-8 years, had I not had my mother by my side, I don’t know how I would have made it through.”

Just as it’s important to have an inspiring person by your side, Angela feels that it’s equally important for her to inspire others. When asked, what she’d like to leave for the next generation, she stated, “I would like them to remember that it’s not the alpha or omega listed on your tombstone, but it’s what in your dash. I’ve always been taught that you can’t receive if your hand is always closed, you have to give a little. I would love to leave a legacy knowing that I was a giver.”

The Village “My mother, husband, and brother are who I consider being my village. I prefer to have such a small village because sometimes less is more. I’ve always been a person who likes quality over quantity. My brother, Kendall Celestine, has been one of those people with who I can pick up the phone at any time. He will cry with me, pray with me, or just talk with me.”

Angela shared with us that, although she doesn’t have any children of her own, she has two God-daughters, Sdyney Jolivette and Bailey Celestine whom she loves dearly. These beautiful young ladies fill a void within Angela’s life that she says, otherwise would be hard for her. One of her favorite things to do with them is to provide “experiences”, such as going to the theater, fine dining, attending a tea, and more. These experiences take the place of traditional gifts during special occasions in life.

The most influential person in her life, she told us, is her husband. He is the one person with who she leans on, cries on, prays with, and shares every thought with. No matter the occasion, he pats her on the back and pushes her forward all at the same time. They enjoy traveling, dining at various places, enjoying music, dancing, and simply having fun.

The Community Angela has a soft spot for Senior Citizens. Before the pandemic, she could be found volunteering by helping them complete medical paperwork or bringing them fans when needed.

She also served on the Board of Parks and Recreation in the city of New Iberia, Louisiana. She desires to continue to assist and help seniors and youth through mentorship.

Purpose What does purpose look like for you? “Doing something that gives you no return except joy in your heart. Being able to give unselfishly of yourself to others. That’s the best way that I can sum it up.”

What’s next for you? “Would like to start a co-ed etiquette school. The goal would be to teach young people how to present themselves in an upscale atmosphere. If we teach them now the who, what, when, and how of society, then we will ultimately create a new norm for the next generation.”

The Charge to Others “I wake up with an affirmation every morning. Which is, “I will, I can, and I deserve”. I also do affirmations with songs, such as Kirk Franklin’s Brighter Day and Love Theory. It’s good to set your atmosphere before you even set your feet on the ground. I also always make myself approachable. I asked God to make me a light so that I may shine everywhere I go. So, I’d like to tell everyone to make sure that your light is shining bright in everything that you do because you never know who’s watching, listening, and learning from you.”

Fun Facts: Angela is a lover of plants, flowers, landscaping, and architectural structures. “Playing in the dirt is my relaxation. One would never guess that because I am classy, that I wouldn’t want to get dirty, but I love being outside and fixing up my flower bed. I am fascinated by when flowers grow and how they look. The uniqueness of finding flowers and learning about them is so relaxing. In addition to that, I also love architectural homes and pieces. It’s something that I’ve always loved.”

My brand consists of many different clothing pieces such as Shirts, Hoodies, Joggers, Sweatshirts, and Crop Tops. The brand Polished My World My Way shows how you can be confident with yourself. It also gives you the strength to push behind your dreams and become a more superior version of you.

When wearing the brand Polished My World My Way, you should feel like the world is at your fingertips and that you are capable of anything. The brand A’COLE is a representation of my name. My first name Asia’Lynn starts with an A and my middle name Nicole which is how we discovered the brand A’Cole. I am a positive person and a powerhouse who loves to help others become more confident, gain self-esteem, and the example of chasing one’s dreams so when one wears the brand A’COLE they know that they can do the same.

Sometimes things do not go as planned when trying to become successful and some are likely to give up on their dreams because giving up is easy. The legacy I wish to leave behind is a great positive effect of others.

ITM: Tell us about a favorite past time of yours.

I love the pastimes of me playing music at my piano recitals. Music is another way of how I cope with hard times so those were the best. I wrote my own songs and played my own melodies on my piano.

INSPIRING LEGACY SINGLE MOTHER’S LEGACY by: Dr. Alexis C. Smith

S

ome years ago, after several failed relationships, I was talking with my daughter and I noticed that she would not refer to my ex-husband by his name, but rather referred to him as “That Man.” This caught my attention, because for years “That Man” had been her stepfather; five years to be exact. Someone she’d shared a home with, a table with, vacations, and holidays.

During those times he’d appeared to love us both deeply, only to leave and never speak to us again.

We would wake up to each day, pray, and push through, sometimes I had no clue what I would feed her or if I had enough money left from the bills to grab her a hot-n-spicy or something fulfilling. I didn’t tell her much about my fears, or how I felt about being a single mother again, but as we rode home somedays, she would just reach out and grab my hand.

No matter what it looked like or felt like, my failed relationships did not change the strength that reflected from my child’s eyes when she looked at me. She never asked me if we could go find him, ask him to come back, or if I would consider reconnecting with her father. She’d climb in my bed and appear to be fettling with something, then out of the blue she was asleep. Right there onside of me, sleeping like a baby. I took a glance down at my sleeping beauty and

realized, all these years I had been investing in the wrong things.

My value in her eyes didn’t increase or diminish if I had a man that I’d refer to as “King” by my side. My value increased daily in her heart, because no matter how rough and crazy things got for me, I refused to stop believing in the gifts and talents that she had inside. Our constant long rides of “Yes you can” affirmations, tik tok dances, or just laughing until we cried. Even though I fought to live with a heart that was broken, when she got distracted by life, I reminded her to keep her head held high.

Six years later, my mini me turned 18. The day after Christmas, and my heart couldn’t have been prouder to have a smart, beautiful, courage’s young woman, bright eyed, and eager to leave her mark on the world. So, I took to social media, to post her, to share her with my family and friends, encouraging that they celebrate her, send her a message or a gift to show her how much she’s loved.

When I signed on I saw a post, with pictures of myself, which she posted to let me know how much I am admired and loved.

Her post read: “…thank you for loving me for 18 years and for a lifetime. Thank you for always being there for me, always being my shoulder to cry on, supporting me with any plan, and

for being Ms. Makeithappen. Words cannot describe how much I love you!! Thanks for being the best role model anyone can ever have. So proud of you, thank you for showing the right way of life. I love you so so so so much mommy @Alexis Smith.”

After reading it, all I could do was cry. I’d sent my daughter to Texas, Summer of 2012.

I sent her to stay with my cousin and her husband, who I viewed as awesome parents.

I had to distance her for the trauma that I was experiencing in my life. When I went to visit my baby in the middle of the summer, she hugged me, laid onside of me, and said “Momma, you’re going to be alright.”

Annie L. Mouton is an active member of the civic and community organization, Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated, which was founded in 1964 in Tyler, Texas.

Annie’s journey of service in this organization on a day where she and her sister, Ivy, and 2 others traveled to the organization’s roots, in Tyler, Texas, to be inducted as formal members in 1977, where they were able to personally meet 4 of the 5 original founders. After serving 44 years in this organization in many capacities on the local, regional (area), and national level; in 2019, Annie was elected as the 15th National Area One Director, where she is currently serving in her role, alongside of a team of members that she affectionately calls, “the best executive board and administration on this side of heaven”.

Annie would be remised if she did not always mention the dedicated membership of Area One Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. Collectively, they work tirelessly to continue the efforts of their Founders to instill leadership, sisterhood, and values as they serve youth and adults not only in their local communities, but as a nationwide effort to impact with service while Transforming

In thinking about how far we’ve come in the organization and the impacts they have made, Annie states: “This is a really good time in the organization, we celebrated our 50th Area Conference this year. I often think about how I would have loved to have walked in our founders’ shoes and have gotten inside of their heads. Members of the organization know the year of our founding, which was in 1964, what started out as a luncheon as the White House with Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson. From that luncheon, our only surviving founder, Ozell Dean, took the idea back to Texas College in Tyler, Texas; and from that, TLOD was founded as a public service organization. You see, during the 60’s we didn’t have a lot to keep our youth engaged, but these visionary women said let’s

serve youth and adults; and from that, six major areas of the organization were formed, and we have been serving every since.”

Do you have any favorite moments over the years in TLOD?

It is my prayer that the world will continue to move forward with vaccinations, to allow for in person conferences in 2022. Shifting virtually has allowed the us to be very creative. A great example would be during this year, on March 4th, for the first time, we were able to convene

a very successful Area One Virtual Conference, which transitioned us into a more virtual platform. Although they were not able to meet in person, this allowed the leadership to stretch their knowledge, presence, and platform into being creative as we continue to serve in this capacity.

What would you like your legacy to be?

I have served in many capacities where members learned my name. I have served with excellence, with class, and as a “Lady”.

When I think of my legacy in Top Ladies of Distinction, if any member were to say, when my name comes up, that I was fair, I listened, that I was passionate and loving; then I am good. My purpose has been fulfilled, and my legacy has been established. One would have to walk in these shoes to know what it really feels like and what it’s really like to be in certain positions. We are in a public organization, so we are giving of our time and talents with no salary attached. The fact that I am approachable, says a lot about me.

When someone has a conversation with me or they are simply just in my presence and they leave feeling good about that conversation.

Or if I said something, that made a difference

within them, then again, my purpose has been fulfilled, and my legacy has been established.

What would you say to the young lady who is not a member of this organization, who may want that service background? What would the message be?

That we welcome women who are about service to others. Women who have removed self, and are about selfless service. I would say that TLOD is an organization that allows you to expand your gifts and talents in numerous ways. It is also an organization where you can have fun and socialize with each other.

What are those fun moments?

Having the ability to network with other strong women, laugh with them, and learn from them is always important. Also, when we are having an event, you hear a particular song, and you hit the dance floor and you’re out there with women of all generations and everyone is having a genuinely good time together, that is fun. The spirit contests that we have at our local and area conferences are always fun and engaging, and it allows us to dress up and have a great time cheering for each other, and as women, we should always do that.

What else would you like for the audience to know?

Service to others is number one. The perfect model is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He showed us how to serve others, and from that we take from His lead. And when we provide services, or help others in any way, we are doing it because He did it. And as His creation, as His child, I am going to be obedient, to my Father’s will.

How big of an impact is your family into this role of service?

I couldn’t and wouldn’t do what I am doing, including the many hours in one day of TLOD Area One, if I didn’t have the love and support of my husband, Johnnie Mouton.

He accompanies me on trips. He makes sure that I have everything that I need when I need it. He is my biggest supporter.

For me to go to our meetings, and see her still be an example for us, means a great deal to me, not just for me, but also on behalf of the other ladies and teens. As she, and many others have been a great example, once my tenure is over, I will continue to actively serve as long as I possibly can, with God’s will.

My son, John, is a former Top Teen of America from the Lake Charles Chapter.

Even as an adult man at this time, I can see, To learn more about this organization, visit it’s evident that as a Top Teen he was taught www.tlodinc.org. how to treat people. How best to work out particular situations, how to improve self, and through this improvement to help others and always remember that it is not about you.

I also have the support and love of the Lake Charles Chapter of TLOD AND TTA, and wherever I go, they are with me and that means a lot when you are in a leadership role, that you have that love and support from your people at home.

What scripture do you live by?

My scripture of reference and assurance every time says, “I will life up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
