Research
As soon as the euphoria group pitched their ideas to me and mentioned the elements and nature being a key part of their dance my first thought was greek mythology so I started looking for images that would inspire my sourcing.

How to dress dancers
‘It can be so vulnerable going to a fitting, especially for teenagers. Our bodies are changing, and we cannot control that. No two bodies are alike, and it is unfair not to cast a dancer in a certain role simply because a costume will not fit them. Dancers are often excluded due to an unwillingness to alter a costume, further perpetuating harmful body shaming stereotypes.’
‘Dancers need to be able to talk to their costume director. Knowing that they can tell them if something does not fit right or is uncomfortable can make all the difference in the dancer’s success on stage. Having open dialogue, mutual respect and someone who understands and cares about different shapes, shades and sizes allows for a positive and healthy environment.’
(Brown Girls Do Ballet®, 2022)

At every fitting it is vital to keep communication flowing between the designer, myself and the dancers. I always ensured to ask them to try their dance out once they had their costume on to make sure they can move around in it and make any changes that are needed ahead of time.
Movement an
Fig 5 two dancers

It is very important when costuming a dancer to have a good understanding of the many kinds of movements they often do and be open to the idea of a costume you have picked getting turnt away because they can’t move as they need to in it. It is also important to take into account how they feel in their costumes and how they are being represented. This quote is in relation to ballet but I believe the mentality of it holds true for all dance. ‘Competition, although quiet, is fierce- in part because standards for perfection are so clearly defined. The aesthetic rational based on the pursuit of classical beauty offers dancers no alternative conceptions of dance’ (Desmond, 2003)

Ballet
‘For Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake in the late 1870s, an even shorter skirt was needed to allow for the jumps, and a flared garment that barely covered the behind caused a minor scandal! Quickly dubbed the Pancake for its flat, wide shape, it was held with hoops and 10 layers of netting. It soon became the style worn by prima ballerinas to show off their strength and skill.’(Wisung, 2022)
‘The 1950s saw another shape emerge – the Powder Puff, which did away with the hoops, and used modern fabrics to create and retain its shape.’ (Wisung, 2022)
‘Diverse styles range from minimalist leotards to avant-garde designs that emphasise movement. Advanced textiles, innovative construction methods, and the application of technology’. (Ballet, 2024)

Atheleisure
‘Athleisure has revolutionised the design of crop tops and sports bras, which are now as stylish as they are functional.
Supportive Sports Bras: Featuring adjustable straps and moisturewicking fabrics, these bras provide the necessary support for vigorous dance routines while keeping dancers cool and comfortable.
Stylish Crop Tops: With features like mesh panels, cut-outs, and bold prints, crop tops have become a fashion statement in dance studios and on stage.
Sustainability is a growing trend in all areas of fashion, including athleisure and dancewear.
Eco-Friendly Fabrics: Many brands are now using recycled materials and organic cotton to create their dancewear lines. These sustainable options reduce environmental impact without compromising on quality or performance.
Ethical Manufacturing: Consumers are increasingly interested in brands that prioritize fair labor practices and environmentally friendly production methods.’ (Dancewear, 2024)
Fig14Atheleisurewear
‘The athleisure trend has transformed dancewear, offering a blend of style, comfort, and functionality that meets the demands of modern dancers. As sustainability and customisation continue to grow in importance, athleisure dancewear is set to become even more versatile and personalised, ensuring that dancers can perform at their best while looking and feeling great.’ (Dancewear, 2024)
Sustainable sourcing
Fig 13 Sustainable video
This video gives a bit of insight into the benefits of shopping sustainably through your local charity shops. ‘If you’re lucky you can find some vintage items whilst also donating money to charity and not only are you not buring fast fashion you’re also not contributing to the production of it in the slightest. You can get an entirely new wardrobe without increasing your carbon footprint ’ (YSTV - York Student Television, 2022)
I took all this information on board and tried to be as sustainable as possible and used hire houses as well as charity shops and the AUB costume store too.
Gallery
The gallery at AUB had an exhibition on centred around AI and when the dancers told me they want to base the ‘Gallery’ dance around it I went straight there to get inspiration for the colour schemes I should be looking at when I begin to source. The time lines on the wall are an important detail to note as it could be incorporated into the design.
Interviewwithindustry professional
I had a phonecall/informal interview (and took notes) with Andrew Carthy who is a classically trained dancer and has featured in many West End productions such as Charlie and the chocolate factory, Wicked, The Wedding Singer, Rock of Ages, Guys and Dolls
Dance show
I went to watch this BU dance showcase and some of the costumes in the performance gave me great inspiration for what I could start sourcing. The white flowy costumes resemble the ideas that the dance students discussed so I took pictures to refer to in the future.
rI needed to dye these white tops light grey to try and match the trousers we already have. I used dylon dye and in order to do this I mixed 2 litres of warm water with 5g of black dye and 30g of salt. I sampled it with small pieces of calico first and added more water if it was slightly too dark. It was trial and error and I ended up having to use a vat to ensure the tops were fully engulfed in the dye to make it even. You must also get the fabric fully wet before and fully rinse it afterwards before hanging it to dry or putting it in the spinner.
Initialdesignideas
As this project was being led by the design choices of the dancers I sent them these options to get an idea of what they would like to wear. I got to this point by listening to thier initial ideas and discussing with designer Charlie to figure out what avenue we can go down to achieve what they want while being realistic with time and money.

Alterations
Every pair of trousers had to be hemmed by me as all the dancers are quite short! This was time consuming as it was only me working on it but I made it work with good time management.
The scarfs we used were all wrapped around their bodies in a different way and needed to be fastened as they couldn't all be tied as it would look messy. So lots of poppers had to be sewn!
